Welcome Letter Welcome to the launch issue of In Residence, the new bi-monthly magazine from Dubai Sotheby’s International Realty. We are delighted to serve our clients by producing this exclusive publication for you, which will showcase some truly incredible properties for sale both here in the UAE and across the world. Each issue will also feature engaging lifestyle articles and inspiring home design ideas. In this issue we look back at Sotheby’s near-three centuries in business and discover how the international realty business was born of the famous auction house. We speak to the ‘100-carat man’, David Bennett of Sotheby’s jewellery division, who has presided over arguably the world’s most important jewellery sales. Elsewhere, King of Neon Chris Bracey

invites us to his ‘junkyard’, while interior designer to the stars, Jo Berryman, talks celebrity clients and expert interiors. We lift the bonnet on the Rolls-Royce Phantom Series to reveal how the revered brand is redefining luxury in the motoring industry. Also, for the sartorially savvy, we take a stroll down Savile Row, the historical London street that continues to be the go-to place for bespoke apparel for the affluent and influential. We hope you enjoy this first issue and perusing the wonderful properties inside – remember, we’re only a call away when you discover your dream home. OPEN DIOR A new coffee table tome promises to give fashion followers a rare glimpse into the workings of one of the world’s finest couturiers From the billowing skirts and waspy waists in the 1950s through to the modernist designs we see today, Christian Dior has always been a designer to be desired. Since Dior founded his namesake fashion label in Paris in 1946 (a venture made possible through the support of a wealthy French textile magnate), the upper classes of society have continued to gravitate towards the couturier’s feminine and seductive creations – despite Dior himself passing away in 1957. And a quick flick through a new tome by Rizzoli reveals why this gravitational pull is as powerful today as it was in the 1950s. The book, published, in part, to highlight the 06

relationship between fashion and art, showcases a series of nearly 200 photographs by some of the world’s greatest photographers – Richard Avedon, Horst P. Horst, and Helmut Newton. Edited by Florence Muller, Dior, The Legendary Images features some of the label’s most memorable dresses and subsequent photoshoots, from Irving Penn’s 1950’s snap of the Barometer dress to Richard Avedon’s iconic ‘Dovima with Elephants’ photograph. As the volume highlights, “the fragile balance between the style of an image and the rendering of a dress reaches perfection in the photographs presented here”. THE STORY OF

From 18th century bookseller to a global network marketing the world’s finest art, jewellery and real estate, we take a look at the history of Sotheby’s

F

or nearly three centuries, Sotheby’s has been entrusted with the sale of many of the world’s greatest treasures, from the Magna Carta to the Duchess of Windsor’s jewels. Yet, few would guess that it was an 18th century bookseller who sowed the seeds of the firm’s success. The story of Sotheby’s expansion beyond books to include the best in fine and decorative arts, jewellery and, eventually, real estate, is also the story of the evolution of the global auction market. The venerable auction house was founded in London in 1744, when bookseller Samuel Baker auctioned several hundred rare and valuable books from the library of politician Sir John Stanley. “It is the fourth oldest auction house in the world, after three Swedish auction houses, while Christie’s was founded over two decades later in 1766,” says Eric Roche, director of international development and sales at Dubai Sotheby’s International Realty. In 1767, Baker went into partnership with George Leigh, a gifted auctioneer with a knack for pushing prices higher, and the firm of Baker & Leigh continued auctioning book collections for the aristocracy. It was not until a generation later that the firm gained its now worldfamous moniker when Baker’s nephew, John Sotheby, inherited his uncle’s share of the firm in 1778. Under Sotheby’s stewardship, the firm became the premier auctioneer of not just books, but also coins, prints, medals and antiquities. Over the next century his successors handled most of the great book collections sold at auction, including the library of Talleyrand, Napoleon’s chief diplomatic aide, in 1793, and, three decades later, the French emperor’s own library that he took into exile on the island of St Helena. In 1917, the auction house moved to New Bond Street, where its London office remains today. Pivotal moments of the post-WWI period included the 1928 sale of Lewis Carroll’s original 1864 manuscript of Alice’s Adventures Under Ground (published a year later as Alice in Wonderland) for a record £15,400. Sotheby’s was also leading the way in art dubaisir.com

The sale of Rothschild’s paintings and other items raised an unprecedented £125,262 and was broadcast live by the BBC. THE VENERABLE AUCTION HOUSE WAS FOUNDED IN LONDON IN 1744 Bowling Green, near Wall Street, and the art market went global. One of Sotheby’s first blockbuster auctions was the 1958 Goldschmidt sale. The collection of seven Impressionist paintings assembled by New York investment banker Jakob Goldschmidt sold in London for a record £781,000 – then the highest total ever achieved for a fine art sale. It also marked the first evening sale held since the 18th century, with guests and bidders asked to wear formal attire. Three years later, Rembrandt’s Aristotle Contemplating the Bust of Homer sold to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for $2.3 million, an auction record for a painting at that time.

made perfect sense. “The auction house is a completely separate company from the real estate, but we work very closely together,” says Roche. “A lot of our clients have been buyers of Sotheby’s for many years – generations in some cases – and they’re coming to a company they know.” The 1980s saw a booming auction market in most categories. In 1983, Sotheby’s was privatised after American real estate developer Alfred Taubman acquired the firm. In 1987, Sotheby’s Geneva conducted the historic auction of the Duchess of Windsor’s jewels, setting a world record for a single-owner collection while, over in New York, Vincent Van Gogh’s Irises sold for a record-breaking $53.9 million, nudging the firm’s global sales to $1 billion for the first time. A year later, the company was again floated, this time on the New York Stock Exchange with the ticker symbol ‘BID’. In the last decades of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st, Sotheby’s continued to produce watershed sales. The

A LOT OF OUR CLIENTS HAVE BEEN BUYERS OF SOTHEBY’S FOR MANY YEARS – Eric Roche, Dubai Sotheby’s International Realty Sotheby’s continued to expand, acquiring America’s largest fine art auction house Parke-Bernet in 1964, and opening offices in Paris and Los Angeles in 1967. The following year, the firm became the first auction house to break the $1 million barrier for jewellery when it sold a 69.42-carat ring to Cartier for $1.1 million in New York. Richard Burton then bought the ring for Elizabeth Taylor. Sotheby’s saw in the ‘70s with a bang, continuing to set world records and becoming the first auction house to hold sales in Hong Kong. In 1977, Sotheby’s became a public company in the UK and within 18 months the value of shares had more than doubled. It was during this decade that Sotheby’s International Realty was also launched, a network of brokerage agencies offering a wide range of luxury homes and estates for sale throughout the world. The synergy between high-end real estate and auctions 10

1996 auction of property from the estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis became the most widely publicised in history and raised $34.5 million, while in 2008 the firm held the most successful auction ever, realising $362 million with the Contemporary Art Evening sale that saw Francis Bacon’s Triptych, 1976, sell for an unprecedented $86.3 million. Sotheby’s also continued to expand across the globe, becoming the first international auction house to open an office in Russia in 2007, followed by China in 2012. Sotheby’s realty business followed the same path of international expansion. “Today, we have around 14,500 sales associates and 700 offices in 52 countries. Our global sales for 2013 were in excess of $69 billion,” says Roche. Dubai Sotheby’s International Realty opened its doors last October and “the Middle East is a very important region for us, both for realty and auction sales,” he adds. So, what sets Sotheby’s apart? “Our clientele follow us because of the service we provide,” says Roche. “When they come to Sotheby’s they’re expecting the very best service from an expert.” That’s something that hasn’t changed in 270 years.

he bustling hubbub of Hollywood is a far cry from the quiet English countryside. Jo Berryman has bridged the gap in just five years, catapulting her interior design business from a farmhouse in the Cotswolds to celebrity homes in London and designer emporiums in America, a notoriously hard market to crack. How has she done it? Her youthful model looks? Rock ‘n’ roll connections from her former marriage to Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman? In actual fact she has a natural talent for design and a great head for business. Beauty and brains? Afraid so. And don’t

forget motherhood – she juggles work with raising her seven-year-old daughter, Nico, too. Berryman has an enviable eye for the eclectic, merging the traditional with the contemporary, country charm with urban cool, period with drama. “I set up Matrushka in 2009 and it was a labour of love for me,” recalls the glamorous mum. “I had a fashion shop in London called Jezebel, an emporium of designer and antique items. Through Jezebel I developed a love for curating beautiful spaces, an eye for colour and a love for reclamation – I guess interiors was the next natural step for me. Clients love this look – we call it poetic chaos.” This is perfectly illustrated in The Folly, one of her very first projects in her own

country pile in the Cotswolds. “My Cotswolds house is eclectic, there is no other word for it,” she explains. “It’s rock and roll; it’s what I do, and how I pull things together. There is a danger of making farmhouses too twee and ‘done’ – but I’m not a farmer,” she laughs. “I love living in London, I’m a city girl, and The Folly is the perfect retreat when I need it. When I’m not there I want other people to enjoy the place, the bright colours and that kind of luxe-boho look.” The Folly is available for holiday lets, and is a perfect show home for Matrushka’s services, styling and products. The kitchen combines traditional wooden ceiling beams and old butcher’s blocks with modern marble countertops and Philippe Starck stools.

But God’s Own Junkyard is the perfect showroom for his work – and the largest collection of vintage neon in Europe. It’s an authentic and truly unique ‘museum’ for neon signage that shouts of Soho’s notorious late-night clubs, the thrilling adventures of Batman and James Bond, and the melodrama of luxury fashion houses. And it has become an amusement arcade in its own right. This zany wonderland in Walthamstow, England, has flickering motel signs, flashing arrows, brightly lit dressing rooms and even Dr Who’s iconic tardis, not to mention all the movie props from past commissions. “Neon art isn’t conservative, it’s rock ‘n’ roll with flashing bulbs,” says Bracey. The sleek and dynamic Coupé, the newest member of the family, is the model that puts you closest to the ground and firmly in touch with the engine. Featuring the same 6.75-litre V12 engine as the rest of the Phantom models, the Coupé will rocket from 0-60 in 5.8 seconds, thanks to the weight saved by removing one of the coach doors. The Drophead is simply one of the most iconic vehicles Rolls-Royce has ever produced. It presents a less formal side to Rolls-Royce, and the emotion behind the car aims to emulate the experience of being on a yacht – in fact, the lines of the convertible were inspired by the J-class racing yachts of the 1930s. Every Phantom model can be customised, tweaked and fine-tuned at factory level to the needs of the driver – which means that for everybody, there’s at least one permutation that suits him or her best – pretty useful, for the car of the future.

ON THE ROW

A street which has been associated with bespoke tailoring for two centuries, London’s Savile Row continues to be the go-to place for the affluent and influential

ince the first tailor appeared on Savile Row in the 19th century, the world’s great and good have flocked to this Mayfair street for their bespoke suits and uniforms, from politicians (Winston Churchill was a regular customer) to royalty (Prince Charles is a fan). So exceptional are the suits at Savile Row, many believe that the term ‘bespoke’ originated here. Running parallel to Regent Street, between Conduit Street at the northern end and Vigo Street at the southern, there’s a handful of tenants who have helped Savile Row preserve its reputation as the home of tailoring – despite US retail giant Abercrombie & Fitch opening along the street. Henry Poole & Co, found at number 15, likes to see itself as the ‘Founder of Savile Row’ – understandable since it was the first tailor to arrive on the street back in 1828. The tailor, too, invented the tuxedo in the 1860s after the future King Edward VII asked Henry to create an evening coat for informal receptions at Sandringham. The jacket was adopted by American millionaire James Brown Potter after he 32

met Edward in 1886 and was introduced to New York high society shortly afterwards, where it picked up the name. Another 19th-century tailor instrumental in Savile Row’s reputation as a sartorial leader can be found at number 1, Gieves & Hawkes, a favourite of Peter Sellers, Prince William and Sean Connery. The firm has long specialised in making liveries for high ceremonial and military occasions – they became the Royal Navy’s tailors by appointment, a role which saw the firm receive a warrant as Royal Naval Outfitter to King George V in 1911. For a street associated with tradition, there’s a handful of notable tailors who have been applauded for modernising bespoke tailoring here – Ozwald Boateng, Timothy Everest and Richard Anderson. Together, this new bespoke movement has combined the trademarks of traditional tailoring with a twist: pops of colour, bolder fabrics and contemporary silhouettes. Boateng, particularly, has been credited with introducing Savile Row tailoring to a new generation. Born in Ghana in the late 1960s and brought up in north London, the forty-something designer was the

first tailor to stage a catwalk show in Paris in 1994. Today, Boateng’s flagship store and headquarters can be found at number 30 Savile Row. Similarly, Richard Anderson, founded in 2001, has been praised for bringing a fresh approach to the tailoring tradition. Created by three men – Richard Anderson, Brian Lishak and Clive Gilkes – this popular store is sited at number 13. Needle and thread aside, what was Savile Row before it became bespoke? Co-designed by eminent English architects William Kent and Henry Flitcroft, with the original architectural plan believed to have been drawn up by Scottish architect Colen Campbell,

The Row was built between 1731 and 1735 as part of the development of the Burlington Estate in Mayfair. Known as Savile Street back then, it was initially occupied mainly by military officers and their wives, and a handful of distinguished residents, such as William Pitt the Younger and Irish-born playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan. It wasn’t until the early 1800s that tailoring started to appear at Savile Row, with its first tailor, Henry Poole, calling it home in 1846. The following century saw new tenants – tailors and non – arrive in the street, with authors and musicians using or featuring The Row in their novels and concerts. And it is this fusion of fashion and history that makes a walk along Savile Row a prerequisite for every discerning visitor to London. 34
