FAIRGREEN'S SHINING STARS
Dubai's Fairgreen International School is entering the second year of its participation in the Million Solar Stars programme. The award-winning initiative, created by Fairgreen's Science Teacher Adam Hall, is designed especially to educate students on solar energy. Now implemented in various schools around the globe, the programme gives students the chance to develop solar energy solutions to power schools. The children use their science know-how to design and build a mobile photovoltaics (PV) unit along with solar powered models. In addition, the school will once again host the International Jr. Solar Sprint 2020 in February, which is taking place on the rooftop. For this, students will design, build and race model solar cars, working on their teamwork and problem-solving skills while flying the flag for renewable energy. Prizes will be given to the fastest, most interesting and best-crafted vehicle from the line-up. Later in the year pupils will travel to Senegal and Kenya where they will bring solar reading lights to students.

ROAD SAFETY FIRST
Nearly half of all UAE parents have admitted to breaking road safety rules when they feel like they are not being monitored, says a new survey by INFINITI Middle East. A whopping 44 percent of parents admitted to breaking traffic rules, with 40 percent confessing to making phone calls or checking social media while driving with children. The survey, which involved parents across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Lebanon, is part of INFINTI's Eyes on You campaign, which encourages safe driving habits and is closely aligned with Dubai's traffic safety strategy to reduce fatalities to 1.5 for every 100,000 of the population by 2021. infiniti-me.com

Repton School Dubai, in partnership with Dubai Cares, has raised more than Dhs280,000 to build two new schools in Senegal, in West Africa, that will provide an education to over 240 students and adults. Over the last year, students at Repton raised funds thanks to various events, including a Winter Fayre and Crazy Hair Day. In addition, the Junior School Council raised Dhs14,000 for taking part in a sponsored day of silence. The first school was built last November when a team of eight adults and students travelled to Ndangane to help get it up and running. Repton is now preparing to hand over a second cheque to Dubai Cares, with the next school set to be built later this year, featuring two fully-furnished classrooms. A portion of the money will also go towards providing two trained literacy teachers at each school.

UAE EDUCATION X DUNECREST AMERICAN SCHOOL
Finding a school that's the right fit
Director of Dunecrest American School, Bill Delbrugge, offers his best advice for identifying genuine centres of academic excellence
LEADING THE WAY
I
n the past three years (2016/17 to 2018/19), Dubai has seen 42 new private schools open their doors and the 2019/20 academic year has so far brought another three to the lineup. Parents are now spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing the right education for their child, which can sometimes be overwhelming. Here to help, Bill Delbrugge – Director of Dunecrest American School answers three of the most frequently asked questions:
love of teaching. At Dunecrest, our teacher’s offices are in the common areas where they can easily be found so our educators can forge strong relationships with the children.
How do I evaluate the teachers during a tour? Teacher retention helps to create stability for children and supports the evolution of the school. Asking about the annual turnover of staff will give you a good insight into this.
Beyond memorising facts and figures, look for a school that helps your child learn, create, problem-solve, innovate and lead. At Dunecrest, school is viewed as rocket fuel for students’ engines, where every teacher is strongly vested in every child’s success. In the case of eighth grader Adam Abu Ghaida, who has been coding since he was seven years old, he was able to challenge himself with leadership opportunities. Adam approached our Head of Technology about running his own afterschool Python coding class for elementary school students to learn how to create mobile applications. Dunecrest embraced the initiative and allowed Adam to design and run the course. Also as Head of the Student Council, Adam has already achieved lift off, and we wish him all the very best for a stellar future ahead. Adam Abu Ghaida
What is the number one factor Which curriculum is best? in a school’s success? The American, British and Teachers. Teachers should have outstanding credentials with a demonstrated passion in their area of expertise, as well as a genuine

HOW TO RAISE A BOOKWORM
C
hildren who enjoy reading and writing are happier with their lives, according to the UK's National Literacy Trust. Yet only 55 percent of children in Dubai’s private schools read for pleasure, says a report by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA). Help your little one spark a passion for reading with our top tips for nurturing bookworms at every age and stage.
12
NEWBORN TO AGE FOUR Start them young: “Books should be shared with babies as soon as possible,” said Yvette Judge, Education and Children’s Programme Advisor for the Emirates Literature Foundation (elfdubai.org). Reading aloud not only strengthens your bond, but helps build language, literacy, and social-emotional skills in little ones, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Choose picture books: Bright and colourful picture books are perfect for budding bookworms, as they introduce young minds to primary colours, numbers, shapes, and rhymes in a fun and age appropriate way. Make bedtime stories a daily ritual: Reading a bedtime story offers a chance to reconnect and de-stress from the day. Kids will thrive on this feel-good routine and

LITERATURE FESTIVAL the habit of reading to help unwind the mind and prepare for sleep is something they can continue to turn to as they grow older.
FIVE TO 11 YEARS OLD Let them choose: Children now have a grasp of independent reading and will start to develop their own interests when it comes to choosing a topic. This is a great time to start taking your child to the local library or bookshop so they can select books they are excited about. Keep their favourite preschool books: “Don’t give away the books your child had as a toddler just yet,” said Yvette. “Sometimes it is a joyful discovery when a child realises that they can read a book that had been read to them when they were younger.” Don’t make a fuss: “Avoid making reading a daily chore for your kids,” said Yvette. Encourage them by guiding them to read at their level and keep the more challenging
texts for bedtime stories. You can also point your child towards soloreading shorter chapter books, which will help them feel as if they are progressing in their reading skills. When they feel successful, they'll be more likely to want to continue.
12 TO 16 YEARS OLD Focus on their interests: Getting your teenager to read needn't be a battle. Hone in on topics that really appeal to them, whether it's the book versions of their favourite films or television shows, or simply investigating different genres until you find what makes them tick. Use technology to inspire reading: If your child is more excited by gadgets than paperbacks, you could invest in a Kindle so they can keep all their favourite books on one device. Lead by example: Finally, one of the most powerful ways to inspire a love of reading in children of all ages is by leading by example. Children imitate behaviour, so model what you
want to see. If they see you devoting some time to enjoying a good book, it’s likely they will follow suit.
“Encourage your child to choose books they feel excited about” ADD TO READING LIST The Emirates Literature Foundation (ELF) and Ministry of Tolerance have launched a project with Emirati authors and illustrators to produce a series of 30, beautiful children’s stories on the theme of tolerance. Available in Arabic and English, the books will be distributed to libraries, schools and cultural centres across the UAE and internationally as part of the new ELF initiative. elfdubai.org

NURTURING THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW
Directing one of Dubai’s longest established nurseries, Yellow Brick Road Nursery (which launched in 2001), Bernadette King-Turner spoke to UAE Education about how her team helps children to make the best start in life thanks to her unique Reggio Emilia inspired approach

S
etting foot in Yellow Brick Road Nursery in Garhoud, with its bright, inviting and seemingly never-ending learning spaces feels akin to stepping into Wonderland. In fact, quite like Alice did after she drank the ‘drink me’ potion, it’s quite possible you’ll feel as if you’ve doubled in size amid all the child-sized tables, seating areas and bespoke wooden tree-houses that flow from room-to-room. As it happens, the free-flowing classrooms are a result of the nursery’s Reggio Emilia inspired model, which sees the environment referred to as the ‘third teacher’. According to the pedagogy, the human teachers should let the child lead the learning while observing and encouraging them. It's something that comes easy to nursery owner, Bernadette King-Turner: “I’ve had an affinity with children for as long as I can remember,” she explained, sitting in her brightly coloured office, which is affectionately decorated with children’s artwork. “The nursery was born from my love of children and the environment. I want to give children the best start they can have in life because they are the future leaders.” As a trained paediatric oncology nurse from New Zealand with over 27 years’ experience working with children, and owning two nurseries’ in Dubai, there’s no doubt KingTurner not only knows her stuff but insists that her staff do too. “All of our staff are qualified women,” she said. “They have diplomas or graduated university in fields related to early childcare and we do lots of professional development, so I sleep well at night knowing that we deliver what we promise.” And what doe the nursery promise? Its mission statement guarantees a “safe, secure, loving environment, where each child’s individuality is celebrated”. Respecting each child’s unique nature, the nursery follows the EYFS curriculum, which emphasises
personalised learning through play. King-Turner explains that they, take the obligation to tailor the curriculum seriously. “Each child is unique and has his or her own way of getting to the top, so we focus on facilitating their personal strengths,” she said. This bespoke approach to learning translates into everything the nursery does. From offering a wide variety of activities including ballet, drumming, Kung Fu, yoga and meditation classes, to making an effort to engage with the local community. Yellow Brick Road prides itself on creating experiences that encourage a sense of responsibility and respect for others. “One of our favourite things to do is to take the children to the Senior's Happiness Center,” said King-Turner. “The children enjoy decorating cupcakes and making bead jewellery with them, and the seniors love it.” Another way the nursery strives to teach responsibility is by emphasising sustainability practices. “The future depends on what our children are learning now,” expressed KingTurner. “Learning respect for the environment and for each other is equally important as learning colours and shapes.”
The nursery, which has been single-use plastic free since 2015, has a huge garden with a vegetable patch where children grow and harvest organic food. “I believe that getting the right nutrients is incremental to a child’s growth, so I run workshops for parents on nutrition,” she said. Keen to be a source of information for parents, King-Turner also organises a variety of talks on important topics, such as the importance of sleep and parenting with love. “In Dubai, quite often parents don’t have their families here to share advice, so we like to offer that support system for them,” she said. The community feel of the nursery is evident as King-Turner flicks through her phone showing off images of her former students. “Some of the first children we looked after are now married with their own children and companies,” she laughed as she fondly recalled the names of each smiling pixelated face on the screen. The number of pupils still in touch and the fact the nursery is still going strong 19 years since its inception simply stands testament to the passion that Yellow Brick Road is built on. yellowbrickroadnursery.com

TECH-SAVVY SCHOOLS
Three leading schools discuss how utilising technology at every age and stage is helping to simplify learning while inspiring students to feel more engaged
I
f your own memories of interacting with technology at school involve crowding around a single (rather large) computer, and waiting for the dial-up Internet connection to kick in so you can carry out your allotted 15-minutes of essay research on Ask Jeeves, then you’ll be amazed at the skills that children are mastering today. From learning basic coding at the age of three to utilising Virtual Reality (VR) to deepen an understanding of key events in history, schools are keeping pace with the rapidly evolving world of technology to broaden students’ horizons. Indeed, the rise of STEAM learning, which integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics, has meant that children are drawing upon innovative ways that technology can help them ace their grades today, while gaining a greater understanding of how it may impact on their future careers. “We are preparing students for jobs that don’t yet exist,” said Rob Hitchings, Vice Principal & Head of Secondary, Dubai Heights

Academy. “STEAM aims to enhance students’ critical thinking skills, recognises the intersection of Art, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths and will go some way to prepare students for the world of work. Its integrated approach to learning encourages students to think more broadly about realworld problems, to ask questions, to problem-solve, to think creatively and to be innovative.” The school is incredibly agile when it comes to responding to technological innovations, regularly giving its curriculum a robust review, and adapting it to ensure it is appropriate and fit for purpose in today’s educational landscape. This goes hand in hand with targeted professional development, ensuring teachers are digitally conversant with the students. “Dubai Heights Academy acknowledges that its students are already interested and engaged in using technology and builds on this,” said Hitchings. “Classrooms are equipped with large touchscreen TVs, which further develop classroom

In addition, iPads are used for a variety of activities across the curriculum, from analysing performances in PE lessons to using language and Maths apps, STEAM activities, building e-portfolios and multimedia usage, such as making videos utilising the green screen wall.” Repton Abu Dhabi takes a similar view. As the very first Apple Distinguished School in the Middle East, pupils aged three and over are equipped with their own iPad, and technology is integrated across the curriculum. What’s more, pupils who display great skills with technology, are invited to be a part of the Student Digital Team where they help support their peers and further develop their own digital skills. “The applications of STEAM are increasingly being incorporated
“Students should be better equipped with technology to enhance their learning” in every job category, which has resulted in amplified interest in these fields of work by countries and corporations. Therefore, it is an essential module to encapsulate to ensure our pupils experience a prosperous career path,” said Kevin Hannah, Head Teacher, Repton Abu Dhabi. “We believe students should be better equipped with technology in order to enhance their learning experience. This learning experience can begin primarily by presenting early years students with information
on how to use the technology in the classroom. In Nursery, we start teaching physical coding, so that when they go to Reception and Year 1 they understand the concepts and can begin coding using apps and Bee-Bots.” Coding is also an important part of the early years curriculum at Dunecrest American School. “We teach it all the way down to pre-K, which is our three-year-olds,” said Bill Delbrugge, Director of Dunecrest American School. “An example of coding for little kids is that they

They are simply pushing arrows to get the bug to travel in a certain direction, but the fun exercise is actually teaching them the basics of logic.” Bee-Bot games also teach children to work as a team. “Many kids just want to push a button and get a result, but we structure many of our technology based exercises to be group led as learning those social skills alongside how to use technology is hugely important.”
Hi-tech learning As students progress through the year groups, tech-based learning gets even more exciting. “At Repton Abu Dhabi, it is our ethos to equip our students with as many creative tools as possible,” said Hannah. “Reptonians study

“Bee-Bot games also teach children how to work as a team” Computer Science from Year 2 and have specialist teachers from Year 3 to acquire an enhanced understanding of the curricula, which includes coding, robotics and app design. This exposes students to problem solving, solution-based thinking at a young age and cultivates a passion for digital learning. Many of our Reptonians apply to become Digital Leaders from Years 2 to 10 and we hope they can take this passion into further education and the ever-changing job landscape.”
The Rose Campus has introduced children to Augmented Reality (AR) focused learning experiences. Students are familiar with the Quiver app, which uses AR to bring their colouring to life. Also at the Rose Campus, students visit the Science Room/STEAM garden weekly. In the Science Room, there are a variety of activities that students can access, including a green screen, which pupils can use to enhance their learning on habitats and weather-related themes. “We empower our students to choose their own learning experience through the various activities,” said Hannah. “Each student has their own STEAM bookmark and once they have complete an activity represented by each element of STEAM, they receive a certificate. Our timetable also includes a weekly innovation lesson, which takes place in our STEAM room. Students can choose from a range
UAE EDUCATION X FAIRGREEN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
Demystifying Adolescence Graeme Scott, Director of Fairgreen International School, offers his advice on how to harness your teenager's incredible learning potential
A
s parents we may dread the ‘terrible teen’ years, but did you know that this is the last big window of learning in a child’s development? Primed to change, adapt and respond to environmental cues, the developing adolescent brain provides a window of opportunity, which can be positively harnessed to truly create some of the most impactful experiences that can shape a child for life. During the teenage years, the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain involved in decision-making planning and self-control, is still maturing so these kids are highly susceptible to stimuli, good or bad. A teen not positively engaged can act out or fall prey to behaviours and habits they gravitate to out of boredom or as a result of negative influences. The adolescent brain is at its peak in terms of malleability and plasticity,
so this time is ripe with opportunity to guide an inspired course for youth. Parents can support their teenagers by following these steps:
Challenge, engage and satisfy the search for novelty in teens by providing hands-on, stimulating learning experiences. These experiences will keep pushing the boundaries of their capacity to learn and grow, expanding this circuitry in their brains, and hard-wiring them for future success.
Encourage teens to have a voice, inspire them to speak up and advocate for their beliefs and seek out their passions. In turn, this will help them to develop their full potential. Helping teens to find and use their voice during their adolescence will empower them to do so throughout their lives.
Put your kids in the right environment – one that is filled with positive influences, and people who will inspire them toward the right path. The teenage brain is extremely malleable, which means it adapts to its environment. If your children are surrounded by people who are bad influences or engaged in negative behaviours, they may become affected by those people and gravitate toward similar behaviour. Be aware of who they are spending time with.
Encourage them to get enough sleep. Studies have shown that neuronal connections take place during sleep. Emerging science suggests sleep may play an even more important role than we thought in terms of brain development so make sure they're getting eight to ten hours a night. fairgreen.ae

of activities, such as construction and robotics, and often use their devices to record, photograph, annotate and explain their creations during STEAM sessions.” When it comes to Music, Year 1 students use iPads to record themselves singing or playing an instrument, which can be used for self-evaluation and as a record of progress. For languages, apps such as Linguascope can help students to develop independence and self-confidence. “In English classes, we use a software called Springboard, which

helps the children to keep their writing experiences well organised. It also helps them to understand the way they should be writing and how they organise their thought processes,” revealed Delbrugge. “The other thing that we do differently at Dunecrest American School is that we use technology to extend the learning day. We want the children to start projects and activities in the classroom and then be excited to continue this research once they go home. When technology is involved, the kids are more inspired and engaged.”
Another example of drawing upon technology to bring learning to life is among fourth graders, when children are learning about the UAE constitution and what comprises a good society. The kids use Minecraft to build a city showcasing all the elements that go into making a modern community. “Coding is the big driver changing what we do now,” said Delbrugge. “Coding is like another language and is something that is going to affect all kids in the future. “The kids get pretty fired up by virtual reality – even the older ones” as History,” added Delbrugge. “Say we are discussing the rise of the Roman Empire, our VR programme can take students to Italy to the Colosseum for a look around. The kids get pretty fired up by it – even the older ones.”

that all kids should be exposed to technology – even the little ones. There’s obviously still a place for books and they need to be writing, but the way I look at technology is that it is helping to simplify learning and make it more engaging.” At Dunecrest American School, all the students attend Computer Science classes. From Grade 6 (Middle School), the children can choose to specialise, by selecting subjects such as robotics or web page development. “Virtual Reality (VR) is being used to supplement lessons, such
With parents mindful of cutting down on screen time, knowing what kind of kit children should have, at what age, is top of mind. The requirements differ from school to school. At Repton Abu Dhabi, Nursery and Reception years have six iPads per class, which are used in group sessions and for continuous provision activities. In Year 1, the children have 1:1 iPads to enhance their experience in school. Years 2-10 utilise 1:1 iPads for daily, both in school and at home. “This complements the teachers’ Apple training and maximises opportunities for creativity,” said Hannah. Currently, Dubai Heights Academy students use school provided devices from FS1 to Year 6. “Audits and surveys as part of the digital learning strategy will investigate further extending this provision as well as alternative solutions such as Bring Your Own Device (BYOD),” added Hitchings. Another great benefit of technology is easier communication with parents regarding their children’s learning. “At Repton, we use the Seesaw app as a platform to share learning with the parents,” said Hannah. “In Reception and Year 1, the children are taught how to post
independently to their own Seesaw account. This allows teachers to comment on the students’ work and give immediate feedback.” Years 2 to 10 use SeeSaw to share learning with parents. “They are encouraged to take ownership and post work they are proud of,” said Hannah. “We also currently use a learning management system called Showbie. This is an incredibly powerful tool for paperless learning as students can instantly access documents teachers assign and annotate them with digital pens or voice notes. Teachers can provide prompt feedback making it both timely and effective.” Dubai Heights Academy uses a variety of technology-based communication tools such as G Suite for Education, an integrated communication and collaboration solution from Google. “With over 90 million students using G Suite, this makes it the most used education platform in the world,” said Hitchings. “In addition to social media apps, we have just the launched the Seesaw application, a student driven digital portfolio with simple parent communication.” Looking to the future, we can expect technology to play an even greater role in supporting children’s individual learning journeys. “Over the next 12 months, I think that technology will allow teachers to further support differentiation by ensuring that children’s learning is personalised,” said Hannah. “Every child learns differently and requires different support. Technology can help support this by adapting to each child’s skill level and pace.”

AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER
BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS How the UAE’s commitment to inclusion is broadening the landscape for children with autism
O
ne in 160 children has an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to the World Health Organization. If you have a child who is affected, or have friends and family with kids who have been diagnosed, then you'll understand what huge decision is it to select the best fit school. Generally speaking, the choice is either to attend a mainstream school where your child may get support from special educational needs staff if they need it, or to enrol in a dedicated school for children with special educational needs. The good news is that options for those of us in the UAE are improving. In January this year, parents and schools in Dubai celebrated a landmark inclusion initiative, with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) issuing new regulations and guidelines to ensure that all schools operate inclusive systems of education for students of determination. In turn, the move will help enable admissions and reduce costs. “Our conversations with parents and schools have made us aware of challenges faced by students of determination and these
24
recommendations are aimed at filling gaps in current practices,” said Fatma Ibrahim Belrehif, CEO of Dubai School Inspection Bureau at KHDA and the Chairperson of the Dubai inclusive education strategic taskforce. “We share a responsibility to remove all barriers to learning and work towards an inclusive education community that offers equal opportunities for everyone.” The news follows the opening of Al Karamah School in Abu Dhabi in February 2019, which is dedicated to children on the autistic spectrum aged between three and 18 years old, with capacity for up to 260 Emiratis. It has taken some time to get to this point, however. In the past, parents of a child diagnosed with ASD had limited choice.

AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER
“The law and framework has helped children with ASD to access a mainstream education” For Emirati families there were (and still are) a selection of nonprofit government bodies, such as Dubai Autism Center and The New England Center in Abu Dhabi. Meanwhile, expatriate families could choose from a few private settings depending on their desired therapeutic input and financial means. However, the chances of them getting into a mainstream school setting was unlikely. “We could not find one single school placement for Jonny in Dubai or Abu Dhabi,” says Jo Nolan who, in 2011, struggled to find a school for her son who has ASD. Now the Special Educational Needs Coordinator at iCademy Middle East (an alternative education setting with an online curriculum), Jo confirms that “many children who wouldn’t have been accepted in schools before are now being given places.” Over the last decade the UAE, in accordance with the UN’s Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, schools have established a strong commitment to providing equal opportunities to those with special needs, including ASD. Thanks to the Government of Dubai's ‘law of inclusion’, which states that schools must not refuse students of determination because of their disability, and the KHDA's inclusive education policy framework, which outlines how “education providers ensure students who experience
SEND (special educational needs and disability) have equitable access to quality inclusive education with their peers”, children are significantly more supported. “The landscape is completely different compared to when I started working in the UAE in 2008,” said Kristin Buchanan, Director of GCC Consulting Services at The New England Center for Children. “A focus on inclusion has meant more children are being accepted into the general education environment.” There are many schools leading the way when it comes to inclusion, once of which is Horizon English School, which is KHDA recommended for children with SEND requirements. Currently, there are around 50 children on its special needs register who benefit from the school's dedicated SEND action team, three guidance counsellors and links with a number of support organisations in the special needs field. For children with more complex SEND needs, there's a daily New Horizons class – a life-skills based session that offers those children the chance to form friendships and connections, in the safety of a small group. What works for some children, however, may not be the best fit for others. “One child with ASD may manage perfectly well on a big school campus with support from the SENCO team, while another may experience high levels of anxiety and would do better in a more intimate, specialised environment,” explained Jo. The Wilson Centre for Child Development is a private centre with branches in Dubai and Sharjah supporting children with learning difficulties including ASD through various therapies including Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and Occupational Therapy. Director, Sheena Wilson, who has supported children in the UAE for 19 years
said, “some children benefit from having an intensive therapy programme before transitioning into a school environment. There are a number of centres in the emirates that offer one-to-one therapy, which gives parents the luxury of choice. Our goal (at the Wilson Centre) is for a child to become independent and functional enough to access the school curriculum.” Another option is for a child to split their time between focusing on traditional education and receiving specialised therapies. Anita Archer Clinical Director of ABA at the Wilson Centre said: “We use our clinical expertise to help support teachers with individualised strategies for our learners, we attend their IEP (individualised education programme) meetings and provide a one-to-one therapist in the classroom when required. It's the team approach that gets the best results.” When a child has mild to moderate needs it is quite often the case that the school setting will be suitable up until their teenage years. Offering support for teenagers who are struggling in a typical high school environment, iCademy Middle East run the iCademy Plus group in Knowledge Village, which provides a modified curriculum in a smaller setting. “We’ve found that more students coming to us around the ages of 14 to 15 as the mainstream environment has become too challenging for them,” explains Jo who runs the group. “Inclusion is simpler with primary ages. A seven-year-old can play with their peers in the playground and do art in the classroom but it’s a very different ball game by the time they’re 16.” With the options for parents with children on the spectrum continually improving, finding the right educational fit for children with ASD is becoming easier to grasp.

THE ART OF BOUNCING BACK
How to foster a healthy mindset in your child as they hit bumps in the road to success
T
here was once a child who did not utter a word until he was four years old, as a result his teachers were concerned that he was mentally delayed. It took until he was nine years old for him speak with ease. His poor behaviour at school earned him a bad reputation and at age 16 he failed his entrance exam to college. After eventually graduating at the age of 21 he struggled to find work. As an adult, he was famously quoted saying, “I have tried 99 times and have failed, but on the 100th time came success.” This man was Albert Einstein. Failure is a part of the human condition. Whether it was not making it onto the football team, flunking an exam or, like JK Rowling, having your first novel rejected by 12 publishers, heart sinking disappointment has touched us all. Although it is simply a part of
28
life, for young people the negative emotions associated with failing can feel even more daunting as they are experiencing them for the first time. So, what can we as parents do to reframe their pain into a learning experience and help them to build a healthy amount of resilience? Clinical Psychologist at The Lighthouse Arabia, Dr. Daniela Salazar said, “Disappointment is a part of life. Even though it can cause high anxiety and discomfort, it can also give us great strength in dealing with future situations.” Failure in essence is not always bad. It is a part of the process we all took as babies learning to walk – falling down over and over again. “It is important that as adults we are able to frame failure as part of development,” explains Jackie Greenwood, Head of Counselling at Fairgreen International School. “Sometimes the language
surrounding the situation can have more impact than experience itself. It is important that as adults we’re conscious of the way we speak to children about challenges, we want them to see it as being a part of their learning experience,” said Greenwood. Research by Dr Carol Dweck in 1998 found that children have one of two attitudes when approaching failure, and she named them the fixed and the growth mindset. Those with a fixed mindset avoid challenges to protect against any potential negative emotions that may arise from being unsuccessful. Children with a growth mindset, on the other hand, are ready to embrace challenges knowing that they will expand their skills regardless of the outcome. This is why at Fairgreen International School they emphasise resilience using the acronym ‘First Attempt In Learning’.
TEACHING RESILIENCE
29
It’s also why Aakanksha Tangri, Founder of Re:Set (an online resource about parenting, mental health and wellbeing) recommends that parents “be patient and provide kids with the space to try again.” She also advises parents to carefully consider their language “thinking about how they wanted their parents to react to their own childhood failures.” Seeing our children upset hurts, but as a parent, part of our role is helping them to find the lesson in their suffering. Jacqueline McGarva from Cascade Learning Centre, a home-schooling and tutoring centre in JLT helps parents to support their child’s academic and emotional development. “Failure can be a great teacher so long as children have been given the right skills,” she said. “Parents shouldn’t fall into the trap of doing everything for their children (from age seven upwards), but should aim to steer them in the right direction and let them learn. For example, if they have swimming lessons the next day, remind them to pack their bag the night before. If they forget to bring their swimming costume, don’t rush to bring it in for them. Chances are, sitting out this time is going to teach them a valuable lesson in preparation.” Dr Salazar agrees, “we can’t protect our children from every difficulty they might encounter. The irony of failure is that feeling disappointed is actually beneficial for children. As humans we get a feeling of self-worth from overcoming difficulties and being able to solve problems on our own. Take the time to sit with your child and talk through their feelings while identifying ways they can improve for next time. That being said you should make a call on each case. “If the failing will cause a huge humiliation to your child, such as forgetting to dress up for a Halloween party, then it's a good idea to help out,” said Dr Salazar.
30
When it comes to teens, they may feel anxious about achieving enough. “In recent years there has been an incremental pressure to succeed and to find a way to stand out from the crowd. But it has become an unreachable goal for our teens to excel at everything,” says Dr Salazar. Social media is putting further demands on children. As a School Counsellor, Greenwood sees the digital pressure her secondary school pupils find themselves under. “Young people see aspirational posts and seek things that are out of reach because what they’re seeing isn’t real.” So, what can we, as parents, do to support them? “The counter to these external pressures is to raise children with more optimism,” said Greenwood, after sitting with each pupil in order to form a supportive relationship. “We, as parents and educators, need to focus on what is working rather than what is not.” It is important to teach our children that things don’t always go as planned and, although disappointing, we can sometimes be led onto much greater things. Re:Set founder, Tangri said, “failure helps you realise your strengths and can nudge you towards cementing them.” This is where the resilience of the growth mindset comes in handy. Dr Salazar advises that parents model this strength to adversity, “we need to be the best role models we can for our kids. Don’t show disappointment if you are not able to accomplish something the first time around.” Use your experiences to educate your child on seeing the positives and moving forward to find their passions. Oprah Winfrey was fired from her job as a news reporter before she landed a talk show, while Walt Disney was fired from a newspaper for a lack of imagination. So, if words aren’t their forte but they excel in maths, focus on what works. You may just be encouraging the next Einstein along their path to success.

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATIONS
PARENT POWER
When parents club together, wonderful things can happen, as the parents’ associations at these top schools go to show
W
hether you want to play a more active role in your child’s school life, find a meaningful way to put your skills to good use, or simply give back to the community, supporting the parents’ association (PA) at your school may be just the ticket. Designed to bring pupils, staff, parents and the wider community together through fun initiatives that give back, from quiz nights to school fêtes and second-hand uniforms sales, PAs add value in a variety of ways. The JESS Parents’ Group (JPG) at JESS Arabian Ranches invites parents of primary and secondary school aged kids to get involved in a fun line-up of social events and activities that take place throughout the school year. Since its inception in 2006, JPG has raised over Dhs1 million in funds and while making money isn’t its primary purpose, it has enabled the school to finance some much-needed extra resources, including a baby grand piano (named the ‘Henderson Grand’ after former music teachers Mr. and Mrs. Henderson), a substantial number of iPads for both the Primary and Secondary schools, toys for the Primary playground and much more. JESS Jumeirah JPG Chairperson Ritu Puri said: “JPG is a group of parents who meet once every month or more to organise internal events for the parents, students and the school community as a whole. Its role is to improve the overall educational experience of
the children by encouraging the extra involvement of the school community via all the different events that are organised.” The parents’ group works closely with the school administration to meet its goals, with top diary dates including the JPG family cricket and netball matches, quiz nights for grown ups, movie nights and discos for the children and school proms. “All the parents automatically become members of the JPG and the roles in the group are fluid,” continued Puri. “The involved parents take on tasks as and when they can, and help to organise events based on the expertise and time they can lend. Our biggest event last term was the JESS Festive Fête, which attracted more than
1,500 people. “We have had several new parents join the JPG this year either as regular members or as volunteers,” she added. “It’s a great way for new parents to meet other like-minded people, share their views and ideas on how to improve and build upon the wonderful community feel at school.”
IDEAS THAT GIVE BACK The role of the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) at the not-for-profit American School of Dubai (ASD) is two pronged: to build the community and enrich student learning. This is achieved in a variety of ways, from coordinating community events to hosting coffee mornings, movie nights, offering education workshops and more.
Team Friends of Safa (FoS), Safa British School
“Parents' associations run fun initiatives that give back” 33
The PTSA is led by a nine-member volunteer board elected by the community on an annual basis in the spring. Members typically devote five to 10 hours per week and are supported by non-elected event chairs and committee members as well as day-of-event volunteers. In a typical year, about 50 committed volunteers are involved. In 2019, a number of impressive initiatives were born out of the association. Among these was the launch of the Falcon Business Network, a parentled initiative with a mission to provide a platform for business professionals to network and exchange ideas, create partnerships and learn from one another, gain visibility in the ASD community, and provide real-world learning opportunities to ASD students. The school also successfully expanded its formal grants programme, releasing much-needed funds to the school community.
34
“Joining your school's parents' association can be a lifeline into school life” “The idea is that anyone who is a part of ASD who has a new, innovative idea to improve the ASD community can apply for a chance to receive funding to kick-start the programme or fully fund it,” explained Anuj Jain, Secretary of the PTSA at ASD and father of two Elementary students. “Last year, we funded a music group to come from the US and perform on campus bringing a new cultural experience. We also funded a hybrid water fountain where you can fill reusable bottles and support our sustainability programmes.” Social activities also became more inclusive of all age groups. As a case in point, the school’s trunk-or-treat event, where parents
brought their personal vehicles, decorated them, and handed out candy for Halloween, was a hit. For 2020, continuing to host signature social events that help fundraise, funding grants that benefit the ASD community, and strengthening the community feel, are high up on the agenda.
ENRICHING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE PAs also help to enhance the student experience in the wider sense. Safa British School’s Friends of Safa (FoS) is tasked with organising those all-important added extras, from community service initiatives to end-of-year send-offs. There’s a core group of five members who
PARENTS’ ASSOCIATIONS meet each week at the school to discuss upcoming events. In addition, at half-terms the meetings are opened up to the extended FoS collective and other parent volunteers. “From the core group, each role is divided according to the set of skills the parent has,” said Zara Harrington, Principal at Safa British School. “The extended group then further divide the tasks according to contacts they have and what they can cover.” A highlight in the annual calendar is Santa’s Grotto. “So much time and effort goes into creating the area, choosing the gifts for the children, having them wrapped and running the actual day,” said Harrington. “But the smiles on the children’s faces are priceless. Our biggest event in 2020 planned so far is our Proud to be Purple Day. The school is moving sites to a purpose-built campus and we are going to enjoy our final day in style.”
CONNECT WITH LIKEMINDED PEOPLE Ultimately, joining the FoS is a lifeline into school life. “It’s a great way for any parent to become more involved within the school, not just through the academics, but by building memories that their own children will remember for years to come,” said Harrington. Plus, if you are new to the city, getting involved can help you feel settled faster. “When so many of us are far away from home, the parent network across the school is so important,” said Zoe Woolley, Headmistress of Formarke School Dubai. “Our parents are instrumental in welcoming new families and helping them settle into our school community, as well as bringing many events to life throughout the year. “There are a number of ways that parents can get involved, perhaps through helping on the organisation side, operations or
promotion of an event,” she said. “There are many parents who devote an enormous amount of time to support the school, and as school leaders we are very appreciative of this. People have busy lives and we acknowledge that time is precious.” It’s also a fantastic opportunity to support local charities. “Our parents have regularly supported our fundraising efforts for the Dubai Cares initiative, as well
as giving time to enhance in school events,” said Woolley, who counts the teddy bears’ picnic and school discos among the most popular. “Sometimes families are unable to dedicate their time regularly, however, they are always welcome to evening and weekend events. Our school is a community and whatever time or commitment parents and friends can offer is always valued and enhances the richness of the school as a whole.”
WHAT THE PARENTS SAY “IT’S GOOD TO GIVE BACK” Natalie Peirson is a member of the JPG at JESS Arabian Ranches “We feel that JESS is more than a school – it’s a community – and the JPG feels that it is important to keep this at the fore of everything we do; to keep drawing our community together. Raising additional funds for the school for projects that may fall outside of school budgeting allowances, by getting involved in whatever capacity you can, is a great way of giving back and you’ll feel an enormous amount of satisfaction as a result. Plus, by actively supporting the JPG and being involved, we are teaching our children to give too.” “WE LOOK FORWARD TO EVENTS AS A FAMILY” Mehnaz Anshah plays an active role in Safa British School’s Friends of Safa (FoS) “Being part of FoS has played a huge role in breaking the ice on having conversations about school with my kids. I’m now better informed, and am able to help other parents by
sharing information on upcoming events at the school. As an artistic person myself, I love being part of the various projects we work on, such as getting stage props and costumes ready for school plays. The core team share great camaraderie, which makes it all the more enjoyable. My kids appreciate my involvement and we look forward to events as a family.” “BE PART OF THE CHANGE” Anuj Jain is Secretary of the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) at American School of Dubai (ASD) “My belief is if you don’t get involved, you have no right to sit back and simply complain. You have to get engaged and be part of the change. I think when parents get involved in the PTSA they immediately see the effects of what they are doing and how it has a positive impact on the school community. Everyone involved is energetic, passionate and lots of fun to work with. The best bit, however, is being on campus during school hours and running into your little ones.”

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST EDUCATION Whether you’re new to the UAE, have just had a baby, or are looking to switch schools, you’ll be eager to get up to date with everything you need to know to choose the right nursery or school for your child
36
ESSENTIALS
P
re-primary curricula start at age three (your child’s age is calculated as his/her age on the 31 July for Indian, Pakistani and Japanese curriculum schools or 31 December for other curricula) in the UAE, while compulsory education begins from Grade 1 (approximately age six, depending on your child’s birth date and the curriculum they will study). Dubai is booming. There are currently 208 private schools in Dubai, delivering a total of 363,643 seats and offering 17 different curricula, according to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), which regulates schools in the emirate. Over 90 percent of Dubai students study in private schools. As a result, places are hard to come by in the most sought-after schools and can be a challenge to find at short notice in some year groups, particularly the Foundation and Reception ages, between four and six. Meanwhile, in Abu Dhabi, private schools operate across three regions — Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra — catering to around 200,000 students. The Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) is responsible for managing, guiding, adopting and implementing various educational development strategies and initiatives in the region, with its Irtiqa’a inspection system measuring quality and supporting improvements so that all schools in the capital adhere to international standards. Your child’s school placement may be organised through the company you work for, but if not, it’s wise to shortlist several schools so you have options should you not gain a place at your top choice. Be sure to research the assessment and admission criteria for the schools you shortlist, as well as the requirements for fees and payment schedules.
EARLY YEARS Currently, more than 120 early
childhood education centres are registered in Dubai, according to KHDA. Here, the authority highlights factors to consider when selecting a nursery:
Curriculum and approach to learning What kind of curriculum or learning approach does the centre follow? Whatever the approach, there should be clear learning and development outcomes for your child along with mechanisms for the teacher to report on your child’s progress on a regular basis. Depending on your first language, you will want to ask about the languages used in the centre. For example, will your child be given the opportunity to interact with adults speaking good Arabic and good English? Check that the daily programme will provide your child with different experiences within a clear routine and that the centre is committed to the importance of play for your child to learn. Some centres also enhance their curriculum with in-house programmes or visits by outside organisations.
Quality of provision It is important to inquire about and, if possible, observe the teaching and learning. In general, are the teachers friendly, caring and qualified to provide care and nurturing for your child and do they make you feel welcome in the centre and answer your questions openly and fully? Ask about the nationality and qualifications of the staff and about the staff-to-child ratio — how many children will be under the care of each adult?
PARENT-SCHOOL CONTRACT Upon enrolling in a school, you will be required to sign a Parent-School contract at the start of the school year, which ensures that both schools and parents are aware of their duties and responsibilities towards each other and towards their children. The terms and conditions stipulated in the contract will also be a reference for dispute resolution. However, if your child is continuing at the same school, you will not be required to sign the ParentSchool contract annually. Your contract with the school will continue to remain valid while your child is enrolled at the same school. A new contract shall be issued and signed by the parent only if your child’s school is changed.
The environment The Ministry of Social Affairs sets out a number of safety regulations, which early childhood education centres must follow. In addition, it is a good idea to ask about the presence of a centre nurse, the number of staff who
37
38
ESSENTIALS are qualified in first aid and the safety and security measures taken by the centre. Ask about the measures taken to ensure a clean environment and to prevent cross-contamination. You will also want to check that there are secure procedures to stop unauthorised people entering the building and for the drop-off and pick-up of children by authorised adults only.
STARTING SCHOOL With compulsory education starting from Grade 1, the academic year runs from September to June, except for Indian, Pakistani and Japanese curriculum schools, which run from April to March. There is an accepted age range for each school grade/year and your chosen school should be able to give you information about this. Here are the factors to consider when choosing a school:
Curriculum The curriculum is much more than the textbooks or examinations — it refers to everything the school teaches, including subjects and activities inside and outside the classroom. These include extracurricular activities, school trips, and visitors to the school. Different curricula also adopt different approaches to learning. All curricula lead to public examinations and qualifications. These will be important considerations in your choice of curriculum for your child — you may need to think about the requirements of any future application to university or further education, either in the UAE or abroad. In addition, if you are
coming from abroad, your selection of a curriculum may depend upon your country of origin as you may want your child to integrate back into your home country’s education system at some time in the future.
Quality of education The learning outcomes and performance of schools will be important to you in making your decision. The Dubai School Inspections Bureau’s (DSIB’s) annual inspection reports allow you to look at these and other aspects of schools in detail (visit khda.gov.ae for individual inspection reports).
School environment Your child will be spending a lot of time in school and all aspects of the school have an impact on your child’s social development and personality. As part of the decision-making process, try to arrange a tour of the school, talk with administrators, teachers and students and see the school in action. Areas you should talk about include how the school is structured, whether classes are mixed and/or whether classes are streamed for ability, how transport is arranged, and the arrangements for lunch and breaks. You can also find out the school policies on examinations, assessment, discipline, dealing with bullying, communications with parents, and technology integration, to name just a few. For more information on choosing and enrolling in education in Dubai, visit khda.gov.ae and for more details on education in Abu Dhabi, visit adek.abudhabi.ae
SCHOOL INSPECTIONS IN ABU DHABI Irtiqa’a inspection system of ADEK employs a team that includes specialists with expertise in the school’s given curriculum or curricula. Inspections in private and government schools in Abu Dhabi take place once within a twoyear cycle, using the six-level scale, with Band A including levels Good to Outstanding; Band B covering Acceptable; and B and C including Weak and Very Weak ratings.
SCHOOL INSPECTIONS IN DUBAI The Dubai School Inspection Bureau (DSIB) of KHDA provides comprehensive information on the standard of private school education in Dubai, which helps to inform improvement planning at school and policy level. This is achieved through a number of approaches, including annual school inspections, parents meetings and focus groups, teachers, parents and students surveys. The inspection results, which are released in February or March for Indian and Pakistani schools and in April for all other schools, is based on a six-level scale, as follows: OUTSTANDING – quality of performance substantially exceeds the expectation of the UAE; VERY GOOD – quality of performance exceeds the expectation of the UAE; GOOD – quality of performance meets the expectation of the UAE; ACCEPTABLE – quality of performance meets the minimum level of quality required in the UAE; WEAK – quality of performance is below the expectation in the UAE; VERY WEAK – quality of performance is significantly below the expectation in the UAE. Inspectors assess quality of education at a variety of levels so the rankings are a great resource to use when considering schools.

UAE EDUCATION X KIDS SPOT NURSERY
Playful Parenting
Managing Director of Kids Spot Nursery (kidsspotnursery.ae), Nouhad Doughan shares her tips on disciplining with humour No one said parenting has to be a constant challenge. Keep it light-hearted and you’re more likely to foster a better relationship with your children. Joking around and being playful, including in disciplining situations, helps to build a sense of humour while defusing potentially frustrating situations. Follow the below tips for turning those frowns upside down: Make it a game. We’ve all been there, you’re battling with your toddler to get their nappy on, your patience is waning and you’re ready to snap. Try lightening the atmosphere by turning it into a game. Find funny places
to put the nappy, like on your head and then on theirs. This will diffuse the tension and likely end in them allowing you to put it on in less time. Teach your children to laugh at themselves. Building a sense of humour in a child builds a strong character, one that cannot be intimated or bullied easily. You can do this in everyday situations by encouraging laughter in potentially distressing situations. For example, if they drop a glass of water on the floor, nonchalantly ask, “what happened? Was the floor thirsty?” This reassures them that you’re not angry while also inspiring them to laugh when things go wrong – after all, there’s no use crying over spilt milk.
Be silly. Having to repeatedly ask your child to tidy their room is irritating at the best of times. Consider taking the strain out of the situation by putting on a silly voice. Walk into your child’s room and, in a funny voice, ask or sing them the instruction to clean it up. You can do the same when reminding them to pack their school bag, perhaps even creating a character for the voice. Of course, there are times when their behaviour is no laughing matter, but when appropriate, try cracking a smile not a blood vessel – your kids (and your sanity) will thank you for it.
