Abu Dhabi International Airport is home to over 40 airlines, including the capital’s carrier Etihad Airways, serving almost 100 destinations around the world. Besides the main International Airport, Abu Dhabi has four smaller airports, each serving a different side of the island. The intuitively planned road network means that getting around Abu Dhabi is best done by car. You can rent a vehicle from any of the major car rental companies, but if you’d rather let someone else do the work, taxis are reasonably priced and extremely plentiful. A fleet of modern air-conditioned buses serves public transport, with an easy-to-use system allowing you to hop on and off any bus you like, simply by placing a one Dirham coin in the box next to the driver.

here’s no doubt that in recent months, the most exciting shopping opening in Abu Dhabi was that of Yas Mall, which opened its doors in November 2014. It’s found on Yas Island and home to hundreds of highstreet and high-end chains as well as amazing activity and adventure options for kids like Fun Works and a huge Hamley’s toy store. Not only that, but this shopping spot is flanked by waterways, which means (if you’re a hotel guest at least) you can try out an afternoon’s shopping aboard an abra, one of the UAE’s oldest modes of transport. You will not regret stopping off at one of the multitude of waterside cafes and drinking in the views, either pre- or postshop. bu Dhabi’s vibrant dining scene continues to evolve and impress, with a steady stream of Michelin-starred, high-profile restaurateurs and chefs touching down in the capital. Add to this a number of food festivals gathering pace, such as the inaugural Abu Dhabi Food Festival held in February and the second edition of Taste of Abu Dhabi to be staged in November, and things are looking rosy where your stomach’s concerned. Asia de Cuba and Catch at St. Regis Abu Dhabi on the Corniche are just two of the new arrivals that have caught our attention. The former offers up Cuban cuisine with an Asian twist, while the latter serves fantastic seafood and sushi. The refurbed Le Royal Méridien Abu Dhabi has also welcomed a number

Sanjeev Kapoor has opened his first restaurant in the capital of new outlets, including Stratos, a revolving restaurant serving up seafood and grills alongside fabulous views, and Market Kitchen, featuring celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s take on modern American cuisine with local flavours. Meanwhile, Rainer Becker’s Zuma at The Galleria on Al Maryah Island has quickly become the go-to spot for top-notch Japanese. On the Eastern Mangroves promenade, BOA Steakhouse has got carnivores salivating. As you’d expect, steaks take centre stage at this picturesque outpost of the famous Hollywood restaurant, although there are some excellent seafood dishes too. Ray’s Grill, at Level 63 of Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, is another newcomer; it serves premium cuts of meat cooked
to perfection over a woodflavoured charcoal grill (with fabulous views to match). One of the most fun new arrivals has to be ROGO’s, a casual family restaurant at Yas Mall with mini-rollercoasters that deliver tasty, wellpresented comfort food directly to your table. Rodeo Grill at The Beach Rotana has to be on your list. Billed as Abu Dhabi’s first steakhouse, it’s hard to tell what’s softer – the green leather chairs you’ll sit in, or the prime steaks you’ll sink your teeth into. Another winner is The Forge, the stylish signature steakhouse at The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal. It will tantalise your taste buds with its prime cuts of meat, while the open kitchen at Li Jiang cooks up baskets of dim sum in flavoursome fashion. A number of culinary delights can be found at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers. London’s famous Scott’s restaurant offers the finest oysters, fish and crustacean in

UAE. Still in Asia, Emirates Palace is home to the UAE’s first Hakkasan restaurant – anyone visiting this venerable dim sum restaurant, created by Alan Yau, should not be allowed to leave without ordering the Hakka steamed dim sum platter, featuring textbook examples of har gau, scallop shumai, and prawn and chive dumpling. If you’re after more local fare, Mezlai in the same hotel is the first Emirati fine-dining restaurant in the UAE. Pitch up here for authentic cuisine served in inviting, laid-back surrounds. Cooking up a storm in the city since 2008 is Bord Eau in Shangri-La Hotel Qaryat Al Beri. It’s gone from strength to strength, wowing diners with its fresh, innovative take on modern French cuisine. Marco Pierre White has also made his indelible mark on the city’s restaurant scene with Marco Pierre White Steakhouse & Grill at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, a favourite with locals and visitors since 2009. Opened the same year, InterContinental Abu Dhabi’s Belgian Café is the capital’s go-to spot for mussels, frites, and a staggering variety of beverages. From Belgian to Brazilian in the same hotel, Chamas Brazilian Churrascaria is a fun and lively venue where a seemingly endless supply of freshly barbecued meat and chicken is served at your table on skewers. Meanwhile Byblos Sur Mer serves excellent Lebanese mezze and succulent grills overlooking the hotel’s private marina. Abu Dhabi Yas Island. The city is awash with quality cuisine from across India’s states and territories, too. The best known, and indeed most popular, is Ushna, which you’ll find in Souk Qaryat Al Beri. Not only does the restaurant serve a fragrant and colourful combination of multiple Indian dishes but it’s good value to boot. Angar at Yas Viceroy, finds favour by means of its Tandoor-cooked meat and fish. It’s divine.
Founded by Emirati duo Buthaina Al Mazrui and Alamira Noor Bani Hashim, No. Fifty Seven Boutique Café features simple dishes bursting with flavour, such as lobster linguine and spice rubbed lamb chops. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you’ll find it at Al Bateen Harbour. no57.co

For Italian cuisine, one mouthful of Cipriani Yas Island’s famous Carpaccio alla Cipriani will make it clear why it’s the go-to spot for Italian expats and gastronomes in general. Or try an old favourite: La Mamma at the Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort, which serves neverfail, homely food. A big part of its success is due to an all-Italian staff – perhaps Mamma knows best, after all. Porto Bello, at The Grand
Millennium Al Wahda also serves exemplary incarnations of classic Italian recipes, as well as more refined fare including truffle-infused dishes. One of the emirate’s most luxurious hotels, Rosewood Abu Dhabi, also houses one of its finest culinary draws, Catalan. It’s the city’s first restaurant to focus on Catalan dishes, with acclaimed chef Francisco Sanabria at the helm. Come here for seasonal
menus, the finest ingredients and a refined atmosphere. You can dine in equally sumptuous surroundings at the majestic Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara. Take some time to meander around this Arabic-inspired resort before heading straight for Pachaylen and its sophisticated Thai cusine. The flavourful curries and spicy salads served up here will transport you to the Land of Smiles in a few bites. Bon appetite! 27

here’s still something of a wait on our hands, but Saadiyat Island will be opening the first of its three upcoming museums in December 2015. The Louvre Abu Dhabi, like its namesake in Paris, will be a tourism draw bigger than anything else in the region when the doors open. The building itself is a stunning structure, with a web-patterned dome meant to represent rays of sunlight passing through date palm fronds in an oasis, and some of the treasures on display will include works from many French museums like the Louvre, Centre Georges Pompidou and the Musée d’Orsay. The other two museums
Qasr Al Hason is often referred to as the symbolic birthplace of Abu Dhabi coming to Saadiyat are the Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim, and the Zayed National Museum by Foster + Partners. The first stop for any self-respecting tourist is the majestic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which certainly lives up to its name. Completed in 2007, the architectural icon is one of the world’s largest mosques, featuring 82 domes and 1,000 columns, and can accommodate 41,000 worshippers. Free tours take place from Sunday to Thursday at 10am, 11am and 4.30pm, Friday at 5pm and 7.30pm and Saturday at 10am, 11am, 2pm, 4.30pm and 7.30pm. To discover what life was like in the pre-oil days, take a trip to Abu Dhabi Heritage Village. The openair museum is run by the 30
Emirates Heritage Club, and is effectively a reconstruction of a traditional oasis community. Expect lots of goats, barasti huts and traditionally dressed cultural experts on hand to display their Emirati know-how. Qasr Al Hosn – often referred to as the symbolic birthplace of Abu Dhabi was once the centrepiece of the city, a watchtower then impenetrable fort from where political power emanated. It has stood for 250 years and was the emirate’s first permanent structure. Today, an annual festival bearing its name celebrates the UAE’s heritage as a whole. For something truly incredible, head to Sir Bani
Yas Island where you’ll find an archaeological site that’s believed to be the UAE’s only discovered Christian monastery. Researches think the original building was erected in 600AD, and archaeologists continue to dig the site to unearth historical treasures. The falcon plays a leading role in Emirati culture, which makes the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital a must-visit spot to learn about these fascinating hunting birds. Visitors are welcome to tour the hospital, and meet the patients, from Sunday to Thursday at 10am and 2pm. Advance booking is recommended. The emirate is home to many historic buildings that

Also in Al Ain is the Al Ain Palace Museum. Built in 1910, it is the former home of the late UAE founder, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and later became a museum housing a large amount of
material relating to the ruling family. The ‘Father of the Nation’ is also celebrated at Zayad Centre in downtown Abu Dhabi. It features a plethora of interesting memorabilia, from hunting rifles to his fleet of cars. Abu Dhabi is slowly forging its own identity as a place of modern artistic interest. While we wait for Saadiyat Island to become the region’s
cultural HQ with its new openings, until then Manarat Al Saadiyat and Gallery One inside Emirates Palace both stage high-profile exhibitions, while Abu Dhabi Art Hub in Mussafah exhibits emerging artists from the UAE and beyond. he development of the world-class entertainment hub, Yas Island, means Abu Dhabi is slowly becoming the Emirates’ favourite playground. Every November, Yas Marina Circuit plays host to the Formula 1 Grand Prix, plus there’s an action-packed programme all year-round. Get behind the wheel of an Aston Martin GT4 or single-seater Formula 3000 during a driving experience; scoot round the Yas KartZone circuit; or just take a backstage tour of the circuit’s high-tech facilities. The island is also home to Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the largest indoor theme park in the world. Highlights include the Formula Rossa, the world’s fastest rollercoaster (240km/h in under five seconds – yikes!) and the Tyre Twist, a classic teacup ride
Foodies should make tracks to the newly launched Ripe Food & Craft Market with a Ferrari-inspired spin. Budding racing drivers can test their skills in go-karts that reach a top speed of 80km/h at the Karting Academy, while youngsters will enjoy getting behind the wheel of a mini 430 GT Spider at the Junior GT driving school. If you’re looking for waterborne fun, Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi has 45 wet and wild rides including Falcon’s Fajal (a screaminducing water coaster full of twists, turns and drops) and the 238-meter-long Dawwama (officially the world’s longest waterslide). The 15-hectare waterpark is perfect for the whole family, with rides categorised across four thrill levels, from adrenaline rush to young fun. 34
For those seeking a more sedate pace, Yas Beach, the island’s only private beach club, is well worth seeking out for watersports such as stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking and windsurfing, or just lounging around in the cabanas with a mocktail in hand. If you’re after something altogether more glam, head to Saadiyat Beach Club on Saddiyat Island’s. Spend the day lazing in a private cabana by the 650-square-metre pool, or treat yourself to massage or facial at the on-site spa. While we’re on the subject of pampering, luxury spas are something the city does very well. The Anantara Spa at the spectacular Emirates Palace
has an impressive Moroccanstyle hammam, with traditional domes and arches, heated marble beds, Jacuzzis, steam rooms and ice room. Try the signature caviar facial – as indulgent as it sounds. On Saadiyat Island, the Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi’s Atarmia Spa has gorgeous grey stone walls and a gold-mosaic Jacuzzi and combines ancient Arabian ingredients with modern skin care technologies. If you’re a golfer, you’ll be pleased to hear the capital boasts a wealth of first-class courses. The Abu Dhabi Golf Club features 27 holes, including the 18-hole National Course, which is where the annual Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship (a European

Meanwhile, foodies should make tracks to the newly launched Ripe Food & Craft Market at Mushrif Central Park. Held every Saturday from 4-9pm, the lively community market features over 100 stalls with everything from food and fashion to art and crafts, all accompanied by live music and family fun. Or you can swing by the original Ripe market, held every Saturday from 10am until 2pm at The Collection, an exclusive retail complex in St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort. If you’re more of an active type, why not try kayaking and jet skiing around the Corniche? Adventure tour company Noukhada offers 90-minute kayak tours through Abu Dhabi’s famous mangroves where you can catch a glimpse of indigenous wildlife, such as birds and black crabs, while you can hop on a jet ski at the Hiltonia Beach Club, Hilton Abu Dhabi. Or try your hand at flyboarding, the latest watersport craze to hit the capital with Flyboards UAE. Strap your feet into boots attached to a board that’s powered by a hose linked to a jet ski, and then hover 3m above the water – easier than sounds, believe us!
