6 Welcome

Welcome to the Maldives EDITORIAL Editorial Director John Thatcher Editor Chris Ujma Sub-Editor Emma Laurence ART Art Director Andy Knappett Designer Emi Dixon Illustrator Andrew Thorpe COMMERCIAL Managing Director Victoria Thatcher Group Commercial Director David Wade Commercial Director Rawan Chehab Sales Manager Lisa Price PRODUCTION Production Manager Muthu Kumar

About this Guide ‘A picture speaks a thousand words’ could easily be a motto that adorns the Maldivian flag; how does one even begin to capture such beauty with mere words? Welcome to a world of stunning vistas that don’t require high-tech post-photography tampering to make perfect; just point and click. Everything you’ve ever read about these islands is true, from the clear blue skies to the powder-white sands and swaying palm trees. In a world of waxing lyrical and slick advertising, the appeal of the Maldives is refreshingly simple: laid-back, luxurious, serene, natural, enticing and intriguing – it’s a daydream for those who are yet to visit, and a source of sun-kissed lasting memories for those who have. What doesn’t necessarily spring to mind, though, is where to stay while you’re there. There’s myriad resorts from which to choose, and each has its own idiosyncracies, be it the surrounding underwater and on-island landscapes, their wealth of amenities, level of privacy, range of cuisine, spa therapies or dive spots, right through to the overall service philosophy. It’s why we’ve composed this guide, to explore the most stylish elements of our chosen collection of resorts, from unique boutique to big-brand offering. We love the Maldives – and with a stay at one of these perfectly tailored properties, we’re certain that you will, too.

essentiAls All You Need To Know

GettinG there

The Maldives is served by all the big GCC-based airlines: Emirates, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways. Flights arrive into Malé Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, then the journey to your desired resort depends solely on how far away the property is. Some resorts are close enough to zip to on a speedboat or yacht, while others organise a seaplane for seamless connection to your destination; many have a dedicated lounge in which to relax while waiting for that short flight, but be sure to ask in advance how long your wait will likely be. Aside from rare instances, such transfers are additional extras – but what a spectacularly scenic introduction to a blissful vacation. Less than 1% of the Maldives is land, and the thousand or so islands that this figure encompasses appear like tears dropped into the ocean when viewed from above. Beautiful. To book flights and find out more, contact dnata on +971 4 316 6666 or visit dnatatravel.com

WeAther

The equatorial climate features two main seasons, with sunshine assured in both. From November to April the weather is fairly dry, whereas May to October brings with it the occasional brief rain shower, after which the sun will reappear to dry things up. Daytime temperatures hover around 30°C and dip to the mid-20s at night. In short: the seas are warm, and the daylight hours plentiful.

8 We Love the Maldives Previous page: Constance Moofushi This page, from top: Dusit Thani Maldives; Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru

Dusit thani Maldives

The graceful ethos of Thai hospitality is unfurled here. Alluring factors include one of the Maldives’ largest infinity pools, the pods of Devarana Spa (which are set among the treetops), Baan Sanook kids’ club to keep the little ones fully occupied, and a 360° house reef that encircles the island. Like most of the Maldives, how much energy you expend is a personal choice: tread the fitness trail, or head to the beach to read a book while swaying on a hammock. From above, Mudhdhoo Island looks like a beautiful oval emerald surrounded by azure-blue waters, and it’s a true hospitality gem.

Must-stay suite…

Palatial Beach Residences appear in two- or three-bedroom incarnations, and the emphasis is on style, privacy and space. A beach pavilion, semiopen-air bathroom with rain shower, king-size bedrooms and a plunge pool are all just for starters.

Dining HigHLigHt…

It’s essential for a Thai-styled resort to have a Thai restaurant, and the modernly styled Benjarong serves up delectable signature dishes, accompanied by a choice glass of grape from an exceptional cellar.

Defining featuRe…

While many atolls here are secluded, Baa Atoll is actually protected, as the first-ever UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

Banyan tree Vabbinfaru

“Shimmering turquoise waters, swaying coconut trees, indigenous blooms and pure white sand…” Banyan Tree sets the scene for romance. It follows suit with sandbank dining, Siam massages on the beach, dinner at visually arresting Sharkpoint and sunset cruises. (Plus, if you haven’t committed to tying the knot yet, the hotel has wedding packages that might just urge couples to make that commitment, against a paradise backdrop.) All the ingredients are in place for amor to ignite.

Must-stay suite…

Intimacy is the theme at this property, and a stay in the Spa Sanctuary

Pool Villa means outdoor and indoor showers, a bathtub that can be filled with floral blooms at your behest, a teak four-poster bed and a dedicated spot to indulge in signature spa treatments.

Dining HigHLigHt…

The BBQ Beach Dinner may not have a fancy name, but a four-course menu created around Maldivian lobster will banish thoughts of linguistic airs and graces.

Defining featuRe…

It’s made for two, and serves as a spectacular resort for couples looking to rekindle romance and reconnect with some quality moments.

PER AQUUM Niyama Maldives

The minds behind this resort sure know how to catch the eye. They call it Nature’s Playground. At LIME Spa, ‘We Knead You’. There’s an Explorers Club ‘for the Little VIPs’, and two arresting restaurants – set in the treetops and half a kilometre out into the ocean respectively. You’ll also find ‘Double the Pleasure’ with two signature islands – one for adventure, the other for relaxation. Yet behind all the intrigue and clever titles, a memorable (and personalised) Maldives experience resonates: this resort is bold, and knows how to highlight the extraordinary.

MUsT-sTAy sUiTE…

Go grand by taking The Crescent. This cluster of five over-water villas (each with a private pool) is fit for 14 adults and eight children, replete with a private chef, two dedicated butlers, and much more that creates a dream home away from home.

DiNiNg HigHLigHT…

The aforementioned dining enclaves with a twist are among the most unique in the Maldives. Edge – only accessible by boat – provides fine dining out in the ocean, while Nest encourages you to get high, enjoying Asian fare in a wooden treehouse up in the jungle canopy.

DEfiNiNg fEATURE…

The twin-island concept of Play and Chill provides equal opportunity for the active and laid-back.

Baros Maldives

Dream of waking up to partake in a complimentary yoga class on a pristine beach? Or how about a personalised wellness treatment amid a tropical garden? The world of Baros, dedicated to grown-ups, is a peaceful one. Once out of a meditative state, board one of its sailing vessels – a traditional handcrafted Maldivian sailing dhoni, or a modern motor yacht – where the horizon’s the limit (though there is

plenty to keep guests occupied onisland, too). A highlight is the Piano Deck, which sits proudly above the lagoon and serves as an unforgettable spot to dine, renew vows or simply celebrate in style.

MUsT-sTAy sUiTE…

Baros Residence is one of a kind, with a walled tropical garden, four-poster daybed on the sundeck, personal butler to cater to every whim, and two things to dip into: the private pool or a book, from the library of paperbacks.

DiNiNg HigHLigHT…

A meal enjoyed on a secluded sandbank in the middle of the Indian Ocean, of course. For diners seeking further company, The Lighthouse Restaurant is the hallmark of Baros Maldives – an over-water pavilion with a white-sail pinnacle roof.

DEfiNiNg fEATURE…

With 30 world-class dive spots, a house reef, and separate Dive and Marine centres, this is heaven for those looking to explore the treasures of the ocean.

12 We Love The Maldives Right: Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort. Far right (and below): Velaa Private Island

Velassaru Maldives

This is a resort that urges guests to step into the unknown, but its high level of luxury is distinctly well known – no secrets there. Romance is in the air, at a couple’s retreat that is inspired by Maldivian architecture and cultural approach, with calmness ensconced in Maldivian stone and teak. There’s a multitude of ‘saltwater escapades’, too, that enable those tempted by the ocean to easily explore the Big Blue – think night fishing and marine-biology quests. It’s a property built to wine and dine, and relax and unwind.

MusT-sTay suiTe…

The Water Villas are stunning and offer a pool option as well. Guests housed here feel at one with the ocean, with an over-water terrace and floor-to-ceiling windows, which afford a spectacular seascape.

Dining HigHLigHT…

Master chefs flame salmon for excellent Teppanyaki at the sonamed over-lagoon eatery, where patrons can sample sumptuous dishes from the Sea or Land menus. It’s Japanese fare with a twist.

Defining feaTure…

If flights of seaplane fancy don’t tick your box, this resort is a refreshingly close speedboat ride from Hulhulé, where Ibrahim Nasir International Airport is located.

“This postage stamp of prettiness has plenty to bring joy, from stunning villas to uniquely brilliant dining options”

Velaa Private island

Velaa’s online homepage is graced with breathtaking pictures and rousing quotes about beauty, magic and silence, from the likes of Shakespeare, Manet, Hemingway and Marco Polo. The ethereal qualities and inspiring reactions are well placed – this postage stamp of prettiness has plenty to bring joy, from stunning villas, uniquely brilliant dining options and Spa my Blend by Clarins to a golf academy and kids’ club. There’s enough for guests to write their own story, rather than rely on the quotes of history’s greats.

MusT-sTay suiTe…

Take a boat to the ultra-secluded Romantic Pool Residence, a onebedroom villa suspended above the lagoon, with uninterrupted views, a personal chef and butler, and a terrace on which to enjoy the Jacuzzi, dining gazebo and – of course – the sunset.

Dining HigHLigHT…

Tavaru will envelop you in culinary goodness, with Chinese, Korean and Japanese fare, and its lantern-like façade is unmissable, visually.

Defining feaTure…

A nine-tee golf course with six greens and seven bunkers – designed by short-game master Jose Maria Olazabal – that allows you to sharpen your score in paradise.

13 We Love: Resorts

Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort

Anantara can be relied upon to deliver a resort that compels you to think, ”I want to go there,” and Dhigu is no exception. On the South Malé Atoll, there’s so much to fill the photo album with memories: kayak to Guli Fushi Island at the edge of the lagoon for a spot of snorkelling, swim in the infinity-edge pool, or simply unwind at Anantara Spa. A stay here is assuredly experiential.

Must-stAy suite…

Opt for a villa with a plunge pool, if the mercury hits new highs. Two over-water abodes stand out – both with contemporary styling, a Grohe rain shower, sundeck

with sunloungers, outdoor dining and steps leading to direct ocean access. The tough decision is: to opt for the Sunset Suite, or the Sunrise?

Dining HigHLigHt…

With eight enclaves ranging from seafood and meat grills to fine Italian cuisine, themed buffet dinners and lighter meals, it’s tough to choose. The Thai coconut curry from Baan Huraa is always too tempting to turn down, though…

Defining feAtuRe…

The Anantara name is synonymous with spa, and its menu of signature treatments (such as the Maldivian Coconut Marvellous and Anantara Synchronised Massage) are delivered in nine luxurious treatment suites. It’s inner holistic harmony, achieved.

Those looking for romance will also have a keen eye on this destination, thanks to its memorable wedding celebrations. Nuptials aside, the resort has the island all to itself, and you’ll feel the entire Maldives is yours alone here, too. Meeru Island urges you to absorb all you can when it comes to nature, entertainment and recreation, and sets the tone with a petaldecorated room on arrival.

Veligandu island Resort & spa

Just 20 minutes by plane lands you in the lagoon of the North Ari Atoll, at a honeymoon-crafted resort with a tropical-décor twist. A beachfacing infinity pool will leave you aching to slink into the waters and watch the sunset each evening, but don’t wish the hours away: there’s house-reef snorkelling and afternoon deep-sea fishing trips to fill the time until that sun resplendently dips below the horizon.

Vilamendhoo island Resort & spa

Step out of an earthy, chunky-wood villa on the powdery sands, and breathe a deep sigh of content. Or perhaps, depending on your choice of villa, you’ll take a seat on a comfortable recliner and gaze at the verdant greenery of the garden on your doorstep. There’s no failing to be impressed with this resort, where privacy – for the largest family to the content honeymoon couple – is assured.

17 We Love: Resorts

soneva Jani

The latest addition to the Soneva stable opened in the autumn of 2016, and as at its siblings, all of the Soneva hallmarks are present and eager to entice. They include wonderful eco-chic villas fashioned from the highest-quality sustainable materials, an island blanketed with tropical greenery, observatory, children’s den and sublime spa. This one, though, boasts water villas that will take your breath away.

Opposite page: Soneva Jani. This page: The Sun Siyam Iru Fushi

Must-stay suite…

Luxury is serious business, so book the two-bedroom water retreat for a pool, catamaran net, spacious bedroom, dressing room, outdoor shower, walk-in minibar, kids’ sleeping area and… your own private water slide. Not so serious, after all, it seems.

Dining HigHLigHt…

As at other Soneva properties, the alfresco restaurant at the heart of the resort serves never-fail examples of myriad cuisines, featuring ingredients from Jani’s own organic garden. Day or night, the atmosphere as you dine here is wonderful.

Defining featuRe…

The Maldives’ first ‘silent cinema’ – guests are given Bluetooth earphones to watch movies so as not to disturb the nesting wildlife in the area.

the sun siyam iru fushi

Fifty-two acres of privacy on the Noonu Atoll community of islands: The Sun Siyam is something else. It’s just 45 minutes from Malé International Airport, and pre-flight breezes by while waiting at the private seaplane lounge. At this resort, 221 beautiful beach and over-water villas enable guests to absorb relaxing views, where a smooth lagoon laps white-sand beaches. To sample the surrounds, there are an array of water sports, a dedicated dive centre, and excursions during which you can watch dolphins slice through the sea on a cruise, track down catches on a fishing trip or share a romantic

dhoni ride (with an accompanying glass of bubbles, of course).

Must-stay suite…

Pad across the stones of a Zen pond to reach the Celebrity Retreat: a three-bedroom abode with private beach and pool, pavilion, sundeck, spa room, lounge and billiards room, and 24-hour butler service.

Dining HigHLigHt…

With 14 options from which to choose, there’s Maldivian grilled seafood at Islander’s Grill, authentic Vietnamese at Bamboo, and everything inbetween. Meanwhile, Destination Dining allows guests to savour supper at their desired island location.

Defining featuRe…

This is a resort that makes its mark come luxury-travel-award time – especially when it comes to fine fare and family stays.

the st. Regis Vommuli Resort

This much-loved brand brings a well-honed slice of sophistication to the Maldives. Set upon a ninehectare island in the Dhaalu Atoll,

surrounded by pristine sand, still water and thick tropical vegetation, all of the staple elements are here: water sports, fitness, wellness, facilities for the children and more – all with that signature St. Regis twist, including its personal butler service.

Must-stay suite…

Planning to come here with the kids in tow? The Two-Bedroom Family Villa with Pool is a spectacular dwelling. Set against a lush backdrop of greenery and mere steps from the ocean, you can soak up the essence of the island from the comfort of your private terrace.

Dining HigHLigHt…

The beachfront bistro Orientale, gourmet street food from around the world at Cargo, tapas and grilled meats at The Whale Bar… this hotel promises an exciting dining lineup indeed.

Defining featuRe…

It’s all about the ocean here. Whether under it – exploring the house reef with a snorkel or heading out for deeper dives – or above it, onboard a chartered yacht on your way to an unforgettable dinner on an uninhabited island.

18 We Love the Maldives

one&only Reethi Rah, Maldives This elite all-villa resort in the North Malé Atoll is one of the Indian Ocean’s true highlights, and 15 beaches mean you are assured privacy. Pick-up options from the airport include being ferried via a 56ft luxury yacht, and luxury details are plentiful postarrival. One&Only Spa was created in collaboration with ESPA, and if you’ve been frazzled by sun and salty sea, beauty and grooming options have been well thought of to restore self-confidence.

Must-stay suite…

The astounding Grand Sunset Residence blends outdoor and indoor living. It’s essentially a private home – three en suite rooms and a 50 sq m swimming pool hint at the opulence within. For an idea of its grandeur, it was built to cater to the tastes of billionaire Roman Abramovich.

Dining HigHLigHt…

Reethi Restaurant is a temple of exquisite dining – the intricate design scheme certainly accomplishes visual theatre. Mediterranean flavours make their way onto an eclectic menu.

Defining featuRe…

“Right now the rest of the world does not exist,” you’ll ponder, as you savour the exceptional, feeling like – yes – the one and only.

his Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll property is all about finding wellbeing, while being enveloped in the beauty of nature and nuances of luxury. Yes, Outrigger has stunning over-water bungalows, serves up innovative Maldivian cuisine at Blue Salt, boasts a rejuvenating Navasana Spa, and offers reef adventures and signature experiences galore. But there’s more to it than that, perhaps less tangible… tranquillity comes in the form of ‘The Outrigger Way’, a philosophy that laces any stay with bespoke consideration. There’s a sense of exclusivity here that is as safeguarded as the nearby coral reefs.

the chosen abode…

The Grand Konotta Villa is tasteful, well appointed, and kick-off-yourshoes approachable luxury. It’s described as a “dual-level duplex

villa with magnificent views of the Indian Ocean”, and we’d add homely, spacious and enticing to that description. Details to whet the appetite are the private outdoor swimming pool, a multimedia console for entertainment options, a state-ofthe-art kitchen, a butler on request, and even a walk-through wardrobe. Wake up to the sight of the sea, and laze all day in a villa that is as soothing as it is sophisticated.

don’t miss…

Anything at sea. The Maldives is one of the best scuba-diving sites on Earth, and this resort puts all the pieces in place for both a memorable time atop the waves and a spectacularly rewarding underwater session – just consult with the dive manager. Spy frolicking dolphins from the deck of a dhoni, or slink

into a realm of coral, whale sharks, rays and more (taking time to sample snorkelling with a difference, after dark). With nature cravings seen to, sample an idyllic, romantic Sand Bank Lunch or a signature Lobster Dinner on the Sea, aboard a sleek yacht. You’ll soon find your sea legs, and the Indian Ocean itself is where holiday memories are made.

Extravagance combined with an immersion into local customs, attention to detail through its meaningful signature experiences, and conservation of surrounding nature. Observe sunset ceremonies and listen to cultural storytelling for a sojourn with significance. At Outrigger, there’s thoughtfulness and graciousness present from first arrival to fond farewell.

20 We Love the Maldives

taj exotica Resort & spa

Crystal-clear waters? Check. Pristine beaches? Check. This luxury resort is spread across Three Coconut Isle, one of the largest lagoons in the Maldives, yet 64 sea-view villas and suites keep it feeling intimate. Guests here are on Taj time, the essence of which is: doing nothing is an art form. This is elegance alongside the environment, with a sprinkling of activities and utterly unique dining to enhance it all.

Must-stay suite…

The Rehendi Presidential Suite With Pool deserves its award-winning reputation, and it’s one of the grandest abodes in all the atolls (if not the hotel world). A gigantic 500 sq m, its

windows allow for infinite ocean views, and lounging on the sundeck becomes a king-of-the-swingers occupation, nestled in a hammock. A truly breathtaking suite, and a reason you’ll love the Maldives as much as we do.

Dining HigHLigHt…

24 Degrees delivers performance art on a plate from the teppanyaki kitchen. Each restaurant has awe-inspiring horizon vistas, so it’s a case of choosing which cuisine will tantalise the taste buds on any given day.

Defining featuRe…

The signature Taj experience that embodies the resort, as well as the Jiva Grande Spa, with its over-water spa pavilions, Vastu philosophies, yoga and instantly rejuvenating treatments.

Meeru island Resort & spa

Known for its chalet-style bungalows, Meeru is small but packs a mighty amount of charm. It measures only 1200m long by 350m wide, but the amenities are more than enough to occupy relaxed minds. The lagoon is perfect for snorkelling, there are two freshwater swimming pools, 1.5km of white-sand beach, the excellent Duniye Spa, and a smorgasbord of sports and recreation options for the more actively inclined.

Dining HigHLigHt…

The Farivalhu, for guests staying at the southern end of the island, and The Maalan, for guests at the northern tip, are the gastronomic offerings here, and of course there is always the option to dine on the beach – one never to pass up when in the Maldives.

Defining featuRe…

Enriching nighttime entertainment programmes ensure guests get a flavour of culture and history – and get to see traditional dance up close.

Coco Privé Kuda Hithi island

They don’t shout about their excellence from the rooftops here as understated elegance does the talking. Tailor-made experiences are composed with minimum fuss (but maximum impact) and then picturesque views make any words feel superfluous: privacy and luxury that’s simply too good to be true. How the day unfolds is entirely up to you – and nobody is likely to ever find out your itinerary. Privé indeed.

Must-stay suite…

Palm Residence is the master property (accommodating 12), but trust us, there’s zero opportunity for a booking faux pas here. Each of the

Defining featuRe…

A place for those who don’t like to share. With a film-set-quality backdrop and movie-star levels of seclusion, residences are your home, and guests can expect unrivalled privacy without any disturbance.

22 We Love The Maldives

Soneva Fushi

The resort that’s big on eco awareness without compromising on luxury assures a laid-back stay – “no news, no shoes” is the mantra here, and Mr/Ms Friday butlers attend to every need. The surrounds on this beautiful island seem wild and untamed, but your footprint is carefully considered: solar panels generate power for the resort, for example. By the way, the sunrise side of the island is ideal for a smooth swimming session.

MuST-STay SuiTe…

With shaggy roofs and airy spaces, the villas are a place to relax, with a hint of the retro about them, design-wise. They range from one- to nine-bedroom versions – Villa 42, for example, is 2,250 sq m, sleeps six, and boasts its own steam room and sauna, as well as a beachfront swimming pool.

Dining HigHLigHT…

Of the nine options, Fresh in the Garden – on its lofty perch in the treetops above the herb and vegetable garden – is a uniquely brilliant setting under the stars.

DeFining FeaTure…

Low-key in the best way possible – yet witnessing the wonders of space from the Soneva Fushi observatory is a luxury of life itself, and a unique feature for a Maldivian resort (sister proerty Soneva Jani aside).

Vivanta by Taj, Coral reef

The blueprint for beach-inspired décor definitely hasn’t been followed on this heart-shaped Hembadhu Island. For those who like to slink beneath the waves, underwater highlights are hinted at in the name of this resort – a thriving coral reef – but doesn’t detail that the resort has its own shipwreck to nosey around. Don’t forget to resurface in time for dinner. An (above) average day here? Snorkel in the clear waters, return for a massage, enjoy a candlelit dinner

with glass of grape at The Grill, then slip into sweet dreams.

MuST STay SuiTe…

Nirvana and presidential qualities? Yes, it’s that perfect. The twobedroom Nirvana Presidential Suite With Pool is ideal for a personal haven, honeymoon retreat or family getaway – it’s large enough for every occasion.

Dining HigHLigHT…

Latitude brings a world of à la carte food offerings to the table of the budding gastronome – in utterly fashionable surroundings.

DeFining FeaTure…

Luxury to delight allcomers, be they scuba divers, beach lovers or loved-up honeymooners.

24 We Love The Maldives

Sun Aqua Vilu Reef

Thatched roofs, billowing white drapes, wooden floors, the fragrance of frangipanis and a nod to local craftwork: this is a quintessential Maldivian getaway, where visitors are encouraged to embrace nature and the feeling of serenity that gets in your bones. Service here is exceptional, and nearby islands are of interest, too: observe fishermen push out on the waters following a decades-long daily tradition, or witness farmers go about picking fresh produce. Leisure arrives in the form of Sun Aqua Spa, water sports, diving, and a kids’ club. Memorable.

Right: Sun Aqua Vilu Reef. Far right (and below): Mirihi Island Resort

MuST-STAy SuiTe…

The Grand Reef Suite lives up to its ‘grand’ billing, with a wraparound terrace, generous living spaces and plush design details.

Dining HigHLigHT…

The Well Done allows diners to sink their feet into the sand and their teeth into delectable, freshly caught seafood.

Defining feATuRe…

Flora, fauna and preservation of local traditions; if the latter is of particular appeal to you, you’re invited to break bread with the communities on neighbouring islands, for a true taste of the Maldives.

Constance Moofushi

This resort is not looking to rewrite the rule book; it promises luxury with simplicity, and handsomely delivers on this assurance. Constance has high standards as a brand, and deploys excellence while not putting any pretense on the guest. The ‘Crusoe Chic Barefoot’ approach is an indication that this hotel wants you to totally switch off, and it enables inner calm with details such as U Spa – on hand to soothe tired muscles – and Constance kids’ club to entertain the younger audience. Optional extras extend to details such as a romantic dhoni cruise out to a private island that can be entirely yours for the day.

MuST-STAy SuiTe…

Senior Water Villas are sized to comfortably house up to four people and a private terrace that overlooks the stunning turquoise ocean.

Dining HigHLigHT…

Alizee beach grill is one of the island’s restaurant duo that delights, located just a few metres from the ocean and serving up all-time dining favourites.

Defining feATuRe…

A stripped-back experience on the surface, but with the necessary opulence within easy reach, once the

guest decides they want to get back in touch with luxury. The all-inclusive Cristal package is an added layer to the premium experience.

furaveri island Resort & Spa

This is utterly remote – there’s plentylof time to snap achingly beautiful ocean pictures on a 45-minute seaplane ride. The flight time to the Raa Atoll is well worth the endeavour, though. On land, Himeyn is a holistic spa that will soothe the most tired travel

25 We Love: Resorts

“the wonderful two-Bedroom overwater suite is not merely ‘over water’ but actually above a stunning portion of the house reef”

Mirihi island Resort

Limited villas and a modest 350m by 50m footprint makes this one of the smallest islands in the Maldives, and in travel speak this equates to one thing: exclusivity. It’s just the tonic for those escaping stress. This is not one for those looking to show off their designer wares, so kick off your shoes and banish them to the cupboard; barefoot rules, and every member of staff makes sure to know your name.

Total escapism. In the middle of nowhere, there’s nothing else to do but give in to temptation and soak up the sun, and the charming culture.

Guests are assured water or the beach, but a brand-new addition to the villa portfolio is the wonderful Two-Bedroom Overwater Suite. It’s not merely ‘over water’, either, but actually above a stunning portion of the house reef.

Tradition is blended with contemporary conveniences and experiences galore: head to Maagaa Island for a Castaway dinner, get in rhythm with Bodu Beru night, indulge in a Couple’s Romance spa package or perhaps even head out on the ocean for some dolphinspotting aboard a catamaran.

It’s all about family at this South Ari Atoll property, and this is the ultimate all-inclusive resort in our collection. Free transfer flights to the island and complimentary scuba diving are just the beginning of a carefree getaway, where there’s relaxation (with a spa pampering) and exploring (of the local island, or the underwater world where whale sharks meander). By the time guests step off the dhoni that takes you to the lobby on arrival, they’re already chilled out.
