THE WHITE WEEKENDER

If you never thought you could get away with wearing white then now is your chance to try as everyone is encouraged to adopt a special outfit for a weekend of partying! The idea behind the white party is to try bring Manchester Village venues together and encourage everyone to celebrate what a great space we have in the Village. White parties are hugely popular all over the world and with the hope that the summer will be lovely and warm it seemed a great way to bring the street to life over what would otherwise be a rather non event weekend at the end of July. The majority of the venues in the Village will be taking part in this weekend with a huge range of different activities. The venues will be dressing themselves and the staff in full white, the clubs are hosting white parties, venues are offering free drinks and drink offers to those in full white (white shoes, trousers and top). We have listed some of our favourite events here but for full listings log onto www.realmanchester.com. The weekend kicks off on the Thursday night with White Wash Back 2 Back, Cruz 101 and Poptastic ‘whitewash’ the start of the weekend with pop and camp on the main floor and funky, electro and progressive house in Sub. The main partying starts on Friday night with a whole host of events, the New Union kick of their

weekend with Plain White T’s loads of white t-shirts fabric paints and UV mess to be had as you get to decroate your own t-shirts for the weekend. AXM Bar are opening their upstairs bar as a “white Bar” only acessible to those of you in full white and offerng happy hour prices all weekend. Churchills are not only getting involved with the white weekend but they are celebrating John’s first year as the landlord so there are loads of giveaways and plenty of campness. Over the whole weekend if you pop into Bar Below and are dressed in full white you will be able to recieve a free white russian (that’s a cocktail). For the ladies Vanilla are hosting an emergency services night with prizes for best fancy dress or for a different take on the white weekend pop to Via Bar for their “White Trash” weekend. Think American South West... For a more relaxed evening the Princess on Portland is hosting a white dinner where not only are the guest encouraged to wear white but all the courses will be white! This set price meal is a great way to start the weekend. Saturday is the traditional party night and tonight is no excpetion. Look out for some extra special performances on the street from a variety of entertainers. With any luck the sun will be out and if so head to Spirt and Manto in the afternoon as they have teamed up to bring us some of the regions best DJ’s live and on the street and into

the early evening. The staff at the Rembrandt are having a complete makeover in an attempt to look virginal as they become born again virgins.. just for the night though... Churchills are offering cheap drinks for those in the most original white costumes. Whilst AXM Late & lounge are offering all of you in full white free white cocktails on arrival... We are seeing a theme here.. if your wearing white and the venues mean complete white so shoes, top and jeans/trousers then there are plenty of great offers available to you. Heres another one the New Union on Saturday are offering free shots to those in white. Once you’ve had your fill of bars there are plenty of clubbing options, Essential are hosting their White Bender, and Cruz 101 turn their Drama Queen White with a free Smirnoff ice for everyone in full white. For those that like to take things all the way why not pop to the Ultimate afterhours event Organic at Spirit. If you thought Sunday was the day of rest forget it, The Beat of Canal St returns to Spirit and Manto with live DJ’s on the street all afternoon. Theres a Black and White ball at Vanilla for the girls. The New Union Show has a special white show for us this week and then after that where to go clubbing???? Essential have their Ultra White and Cruz are hosting their White Night Screamers.

OUT & ABOUT IN THE GAY VILLAGE

OUT & ABOUT IN THE GAY VILLAGE

This month is a bumper month in the Village with the White Weekend, the a start of Pride and plenty of other events going on this section is only brief. Ladyboys of Bangkok are still in town till the end of July so if you have not yet got your tickets we can highly recomend this show for a camp night out. For something a little bit different and maybe a bit to cultured why not pop to the Lowry Theatre to watch the Chinese Acrobatic Swan Lake. We have only seen a Youtube preview and some of the acrobatics are impressive. Staying with the culture after last years successful exhibition held at Taurus Canal Street, Manchester artist Barry Stockton returns with a collection of his new works Barry’s paintings are always colourful vibrant and full of passion. In this his, latest collection his main focus is on watery, deep, rich and illuminating worlds, briming with fluidity. Sport now and a number of our sport teams are off to Eurogames this year in Barcelona so can we wish them all the best we will of course bring you all the results in next months Hot Village but good luck to VMFC, Northern Wave and all the other teams. Clubbing and the afterhours night Organic has now moved to a new home at Spirit. With a new sounds system some great lights and an outside smokers/chillout terrace the venue has proved very popular. Organic every Saturday from 2am.

VIA BAR - THE FOOD REVIEW

Having heard about a new menu at Via we decided to check it out on a rainy Friday evening. Having had not the greatest experience in a previous visit to the venue we were keen to see what had changed and what direction the restaurant had taken. On first impressions not much… The restaurant was still had that cross between kitsch and theatrical glamour feel with friendly staff and intimate layout. Then we noticed the menus on the table and realised that from this point on nothing was going to be the same. Gone was the fussy tapas menu with too much choice and in was a traditional good honest pub food menu adorned with kitsch little Victorian cartoons and divided into classic pub grub staples including snacking and sharing plates, salads, mains, burgers and delightfully a choice of Ploughman’s which I haven’t seen on a menu for years! For starters I decided to keep it simple and went for the tomato and basil soup (£3.50) while my friend ordered the breaded butterfly prawns (£4.25). The soup was thick and creamy with chunks of tomato, whereas the prawns which we’d found to be inedible in our previous visit were now light, crisp and tasty with a generous helping of sweet chilli sauce and a fresh salad on the side. Both dishes were really well presented without being overly fussy or with potentious oils and garnishes.

To accompany our meal we ordered a bottle of Trulli Pinot Grigio (£10.95) which was a dry white but had good citrus flavours. What was nice was to see a choice of fair trade wines now on the menu too. For our main courses I ordered the angelic chicken club salad (£8.25) while my friend didn’t go quite so healthy with a sloppy jo burger (£8.45). The salad was crisp and fresh with crunchy bacon topped with slices of chicken breast and a boiled egg. The burger was a gut busting piece of meat served on a toasted bun topped with chilli and jalapeños to give it a bit more oomph and accompanied by a mountain of fries, salad coleslaw and a great burger relish. It was a great example of simple food done well. In summary the restaurant at Via seems to have turned a corner. The new menu offers good quality feel good food which ties in with the rest of the venue, giving the people what they want and if it keeps up the level of service it’s always had word I’m sure will be a huge success. This August the Outdoor Pursuits group for gay and bi chaps, aptly named Outdoorlads is due to host it’s largest event in the UK. The location is an idyllic campsite in Staffordshire which has been booked for their sole use, set in a forest on the edge of a reservoir. The event kicks off on Friday 15th August and winds down on the Sunday afternoon. The evenings will have entertainment, with a disco on the Saturday evening, BBQ, hog roast, snacks, hot and cold drinks and of course a bar. Hot Village asked Chairman Gareth Williams about the activities:

“There will be a variety of walks from short ambles, longer flatter walks, and hillier walks for those brave enough, these are a great introduction for a new Member or anyone wanting a bit more of a challenge. This is our largest ever camp so we have added a lot of variety. There are several mountain bike routes nearby with easier and harder options, just remember to bring your bike! We were lucky to find a site neat the Roaches, which is a fantastic location for climbing, there are suitable routes for beginners and those up for a personal challenge. SPIRIT - THE FOOD REVIEW

New to Spirit this month is a brand new food menu and we at Hot Village decided to check it out. The venue has had something of a facelift over recent months and although a bit shabby round the edges considering they’d been open for Organic less than 5 hours previously, it had scrubbed up as somewhere to eat quite well. The menu offers decent, simple pub food at fair prices, including a selection of panini’s and wraps, traditional mains including Scampi and Chilli con carne, burgers, salads and sharing plates. It’s hardly gastro dining but at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon with a sore head from one too many shandies the night before what more do you want? To start we ordered chicken tikka skewers (£3.75) and a bowl of nachos (£2.95). The skewers were moist strips of tasty marinated chicken served with a big pot of yoghurt and mint sauce and a crisp salad. It was tasty but unnecessary as the nachos were more than enough for us both; a mountain of crisp corn chips topped with fiery jalapeños, great dollops of sour cream, a refreshing salsa and melting cheese kept us going far longer than your average starter.

For a main course I ordered a salmon salad (£5.95) and my friend ordered the chicken tikka massala (£5.95) The salad was a generous portion of crispy salad topped with a pan fried salmon fillet which was cooked well and perfectly pink in the middle. The salad was garnished with a tangy salsa which complemented the fish well. The Chicken Tikka Massala was presented on a big platter with a pot of curry, yellow basmati rice, mango chutney, naan bread and a stack of poppadoms. The curry dish itself was spicy and flavoursome, airing on the side of a Rogan josh, with chunks of moist chicken. Unfortunately the mini poppadoms were really oily and just a bit wrong but for £5.95 for the veritable feast my friend had in front of him we weren’t complaining. Spirit also offers some great promotions on food including a sharing platter and wine for £9.95 and 2 main meals for £10 (which can include roast dinners on a Sunday). A great choice just before payday …treat yourself! Spirit. Canal Street Manchester. 0161 2379725. Open 7 days

Heritage Trail Manchester City Centre Starting at Tourist Information Centre, St Peter’s Square. Manchester Pride’s Lesbian and Gay Heritage Trail has been a huge success since its launch at Manchester Europride in 2003 and continues throughout 2008. Manchester is known across the world as the birthplace of the industrial revolution, the home of the world’s most famous football club, Manchester United, and the setting for the world’s longest running TV soap opera, Coronation Street. But there is another element of Mancunian life that has developed over the past 200 years and continues to do so today - Manchester’s gay heritage. The Canal Street we know and love today looked very different 100 years ago. Closet pubs and dark streets have made way for out and proud bars, restaurants and cafés.

The Out in the Past trail explores the twists and turns of over 200 years of lesbian and gay history and takes in many of the City’s concealed secrets. Learn how the resolve and courage of so many pioneering citizens resulted in a number of hidden quarters, where together they could express their sexuality freely. Tour guide’s, Paul Fairweather & Jon Atkin give a fascinating insight into the times when the simple right to decide upon the nature of personal relationships was denied. Using a mixture of humour and hard hitting facts, they deliver both a painful and amusing tale of characters who could be regularly found in the City. Highlights of the tour include the Police account of “disgraceful proceedings…” at a city centre location where 22 of the 47 attending were men, dressed as women – and all in 1880! Characters as diverse as Edward Carpenter, Quentin Crisp, Noel Coward and Alan Turing also feature as part of the tour. The Trail highlights significant venues and events that illuminate what was once a ‘hidden history’. It’s a must for anyone interested in Manchester’s and this country’s Queer past.
