BRIEF The Brief called to design a scheme for a multi-use building for a predetermined client within an existing urban environment. In this particular project, we need to focus on a specific medium of art, I choose photography as my mediums. The program of this project includes a public gallery, an artist workshop and residential units for the artist. The site, nestled between the waterfront precinct and the center of Geelong CBD, the block bound by Corio, Clare, Moorabool and Malop Streets.

CONCEPT The concept of the design is first study & research existing Geelong CBD urban context and figured ground, then make reference lines of existing urban road. From that, rotate, Spain the lines to transfer those context into a new architectural language. My design medium is Photography, from my point of view, photography is all about the perspective, shadows, light and geometry. Especially after my study of some artworks from German Photographer Sebastian Weiss. His mode of composition inspired me a lot, the shape, geometry, light as well as shadow and textures. So I decide to create a"FRACTAL", which means irregular fragments to represent the theme of photography. I use this concept and combine with the study from urban context to create the basic shape of my gallery and residential building for the artist.

BRIEF The brief of this studio class is proposed an urban high-rise SOHO building in Melbourne CBD, integrate public & private space in a high-density urban area. The site is located on Bourke St Shopping mall with an extremely limit of height and land use. The site itself is 8 meters by 27 meters, West side of the site is entirely blocked by an adjacent building, east side under the 6th floor will also be blocked by building. CONCEPT To response the existing urban context and Bourke St architectural language. I decide my concept will be design a lightweight Structure building to contrast the existing urban context, I use steel post & beam structure and lightweight precasts concrete floor as the core of my building structure. The white steel cladding express a sense of could floating between the existing buildings. Bring a new sense of architectural interpretation to existing architecture at Bourke St Shopping mall.

2.RAILWAY(TRAIN & TRAM)

Very less green land inner melbourne city. Yarra river run from west to east . there are few city gardens & parks surround central Melblurne CBD, include fitzroy garden and melbourne park etc.

Train line focus on southern cbd, train line pass through flinder station then go north to southern cross station.Tramline occupied few main streets inner cbd. include our site on bourke street.

3.PATH

4.ROUTE

Bule arrow express main path swanstion st go cross cbd area. it pasas through few main central commercial area of mebourne city, such like china town, qv, melbourne central bourke street mall. Orange express secondary path of city. from this we can see the typical urban grid of melbourne city.

Structure: steel post & beam structure with light weight precast concrete floor Facade: a steel mesh facade on north elevation is designed to provide shading and privacy to residents and office users. beucause bourke st is a very busy street during day and night time, so an additional facade will provide it.

BRIEF

This final design studio is call to design a temporary settlement for Chinese construction workers at a generic site. The project is expected to attend to the detachable technical challenge as well as the social and economic one. The solution shall include the whole process from transportation to in site assembling, use, and dismantlement to restart the sequence. The concept of an urban village is based on traditional Chinese village type. Depend on where is the site and construction workers come from, design a better living environment and using contemporary design & construction technology to improve their living condition while they work and live in the urban city. From the concept model making. I use timber to create this basic conceptual model. strips present as linear street or laneway, Timber decks above the ground level and surround by the buildings. people can travel from one building to another, it make circulation complicate but more interesting. Large-scale building with the sloped roof are family living units which its concept from Chinese hutong dwelling, smaller scale buildings are single or couple living units. The central plaza act as a public space, the idea is to encourage construction workers have more common activities at their rest time.

In order to archive the entire architecture suit to the detachable system, each individual living unit is modular design. Large buildings such as family and public buildings have columns & beams to support larger span. smaller building such as single, couple, 4 men living building is timber panels construction system because they have smaller span. 1 meter x 3 meters panel is most common solid timber panel used in this project. for some bigger span building we have larger timber panels to support.
