INTRO ĺş?
My name is Yachi Hou (Alex), I' m from Dalian, China. a graduate of bachelor of design ( interior design) and a graduate of bachelor of architecture student. Architecture fascinates me and brings a great deal of passion to my life; meanwhile, it is full of difficulties and challenges, just as renzo piano has said, ''one of the great beauties of architecture is that each time it is like life starting all over again''. I think architecture does not only mean gorgeous structure, or a parameterized unlimited growth, or a building to pursue extremely the green sustainability. on the contrary, in my opinion, architecture should be humble but does not deviate from creativity; architect's design can not only help people solve their problems in life, but also improve their living styles. In this final rpoject of my final year, under my design tutor ciro marquze teaching and mentoring, I learned a lot about how to be an architect in the furture as well as how to design a humble project that truly think about people and design for them. facing the challenges in project and many more. this nomad hutong project make me think the role of an architect, what I want to archive in my future career. At the end, I want to quote the words of glenn murcutt, a celebrated architect in australia and worldly, he said: ''we do not create the work. I believe we, in fact, are discoverers.'' as a student of architecture department, also as an architect in the future, I will and always need to discover more conceptions brought by architecture.

...inner-city slums are a major receptor of new migrants known as bridgeheaderswho consider proximity to employment their highest priority, even at the expense of quality of housing…Currently, an estimated two-thirds of migrants live on the construction sites they work on...
THERE ARE 3 major CHALLENGES that DESIGN FOR CONSTRUCTION WORKERS 1. SOICAL CHALLENGES 2. ECONOMICAL CHALLENGES 3. TECHNICAL CHALLENGES we should consider following issues: DIGNIFIED LIVING WITH LIMIT budget common facilities and personal privacy limited site condition with density of living detachable and affordable systems relation to community and keep their living habit economic reality and social utopia

CONCEPTURAL DESIGN ANALOGIES, SETTLEMENTS, DRAWINGS
URBAN VILLAGE The concept of urban village is based on traditional Chinese village type. Depend on where is the site and construction workers come from, design a better living environment and using comtemporary design & construction technoilogy to improve their living condition while they work and live in the urban city. However, the concept will focus on study Chinese vernacular dwelling type, re-interpret the vernacular house type also involved modern technology(eg detachable systems) to help construction workers have a better living environment.

12
Bejing Hutong (quadrangle yard) On a bigger sacle of hutong, the laneway and street intersec each other, dwelling units placed randomly. it make the overall mster plan of hutong a chaos. but on the other hand, just because this chaos makes hutong have its unique character of chinese urban living prototype. on a smaller scale of hutong, if we look into the each unit, we will see just on the oppsite of bigger scale of hutong, inner units they have a strong sequence which enhance a steong order of chinese traditional building law, space are separate equally and corresponding to each other.
Shanxi Vernacular House Shanxi vernacular house or village are simillar to beijing hutong type in some ways. but what make them difference is shanxi vernacular village is location and living difference. not like hutong, the shanxi vernacular village is a smaller society, village have fully functioned facilities, such as ancestral hall, public plaza. the village always have barrier walls that act as a encloser to defend bandits. another point is almost each unit will have a coutyard for ventilation and natural light purpose.
huizhou villagee or town street Huizhou village architecture is another distinctive village type in chinese architecture history. most common types are courtyard with 3 direction to enter or multi direction to enter courtyard units. encloser with high brick wall to distinguish the public and private, each units will have a center courtyard for ventilation and natural light. every units have distinctive decorations. slope roof with tiles. most common materials are timber, brick, stone.

THINKING OF MODEL MAKING
From the model making process, i was trying to find some sequence from 3 prototypes that i mentioned above. i use timber wood to create this basic conceptual model. strips present as linear street or laneway or timber deck above the ground level. people can travel from one building to another, large scale building with sloped roof are family living units which concept from hutong dwelling, samller scale large buildings are public space, the idea is to encourge construction workers have more common activities at their rest time. also there are public toielts and shower building, it would save lots of money, instead of have each dwelling have own shower and toilet.
22
SPACE, DRAWINGS & CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY
SPACE & CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY In order to archive the entire architecture suit to detachable system, each individual living space are modular. large building such as family and public building have columns & beams to support large span. smaller building such as single, couple, 4 men living building are timber panels construction system, because they have smaller span. 1 meter x 3 meters panel is most common solid timber panel used in this project. for some bigger span building we have larger timber panels to support.

SPACE The interior sequence are followed traditional chinese dwelling unit, for instance the family living building, the center have a staircase from groud level to level 2. on roof, there is a sky window which follow the traditional chinese dwelling character, allow the natural sunlight to come into the building, in addition, the central space present as a public & transational space between public and private.

INITIAL SECTION DRAWING APPROACH
27
FINAL DESIGN ISOMETRIC, PLANS, SECTIONS DETAILS The final design took 3 weeks to completed. the work is focusing on adding design elements, working on linear isometric drawing. adjusting line weights and provide appropriate sections and detial drawings. The design has changed several times since first plan was generated, by adding timber decks almost across all buildings and give a vertical depth to the entire project, make the project more dynamic. by using the bi-fold doors on public & family buildings, it create a central public plaza, bi-fold blur the boundary of puclic and private space, also present as a transational space of it. there are different type of living units include in this project which it gives more density to people who lives here. Final design follow the intial concept of three prototypes of chinese traditional architecture. extract the classic elements from them, by using slop roof, timber as the main materials to build as well as the deck, make the this urban village project more dynamic and expound the design idea of this concept more stronger.

SITE
The site is located at suzhou, china, at a corner of wenjing rd & xingtang st. the unique of this site is it is not sit next to the building construction site, workers have to go cross a river to reach the construction site. it makes the site have a more quite and safe environment compare to another one. also it is better for living condition as well.
33
SITE ARRANGEMENT ONE, SUZHOU, CHINA WENJING ROAD, OFF SITE CONSTRUCTION 1 : 3000
Another point is, xian jiaotong & liverpool university is just located at next to this site. so how to deal with the boundary between our project and university will be another challenge. so, to archive the thinking of encourage rural construction workers involved in city life more, i designed a tree or plants boundary just arbound north and west side of site, to blur the boundary as well as it provide a boundary unconspicuous line which it will more communication between inside and outside.
