WEEKEND ESCAPES N ew Yo rk
Introduction Our communities are experiencing a renaissance as a second home destination, but the region has long lured movers, shakers and tastemakers northward from New York City. It’s a story as old as our own. Our founder, William Van Duzer Lawrence, arrived as a weekender nearly years ago when he purchased Prescott Farm in Bronxville, building a summer home where his family could retreat while work was completed on the Fifth Avenue mansion he commissioned from legendary architect Richard Morris Hunt. Taken by the area’s unique beauty and realizing the potential in sharing it with others, he developed the remainder of the farm into Lawrence Park, inspired by Barbizon in France’s Fontainebleau Forest. Lawrence established a Manhattan sales office and built a hotel, The Gramatan, where urban dwellers could sample the area’s relaxed lifestyle. Lawrence eventually became a full-time resident at his second country estate, Westlands, where he later founded Sarah Lawrence College. Later, Arthur T. Houlihan settled in Waccabuc, New York, a peaceful lakefront enclave marketed as a getaway for Manhattanites by the New York Central Railroad. Houlihan forged his core market in similar Northern Westchester communities surrounding the lakes, rivers and streams that feed the water supply of a very thirsty metropolis. Over a century later, the draws of our area haven’t changed, and nobody knows that journey better than Houlihan Lawrence. From the Sound Shore to the Catskills, virtually every lifestyle is possible in easy reach of the city. Let us show you the way.
Seclusion In Luxury Nature is the only fence you need, and your “scene” isn’t being out on the town – it’s intellectualizing over a fire pit in good company. Lately, the Hudson Valley has emerged as a Hamptons alternative, drawing high-profile residents seeking a relaxed, low-profile escape. Space is the ultimate luxury, and we have plenty of it. From equestrian estates to massive woodland compounds, our area’s largest properties offer privacy amidst the natural beauty our area is known for. Our large tracts of land are a canvas for crafting your dreams, facilitating every possible amenity.

Live Locavore If you are what you eat, you’re authentic, unspoiled and locally sourced—even if you’re not a native plant. The farm-to-table movement has been a cornerstone of the Hudson Valley’s recent renaissance, affirmed by its inclusion on Fodor’s esteemed Go List. From sprawling farm estates to modest backyard produce gardens, an entire culture has emerged united on the front of mindful agriculture and shortening the distance from farm to fork. A rolling landscape blended with barns and antique abodes set the stage for this relaxed culture of down-to-earth dining, luring great chefs and casual gastronomes alike to pursue simpler living close to our roots. The locavore lifestyle has also led to the advent of artisan agri-ventures at every turn, including craft breweries, distilleries, cheesemakers, coffee roasters, hop farmers, tea blenders, maple syrup makers—you get the idea. Here, even streamline moderne diners sling patties of free range, grass-fed local cow. Discover more Locavore homes: nyloca.hlre.co

On The Waterfront The rippling of tides, the tranquility of still water, the salted air. For you, h2o is the only way to go. With rivers, reservoirs and the sea, our area boasts about every type of water lifestyle imaginable, whether it’s best enjoyed in swim trunks, topsiders and salmon shorts or donning a bucket hat in a dory with reel in hand. The Sound Shore keeps boat and beach within striking distance for a daily Manhattan commute. Yachting culture thrives, with sandy beaches often steps away. The Hudson river towns sit at a natural gateway from Gotham, framing one of America’s most storied inland waterways with views fit for Rockefellers, Roosevelts, Vanderbilts and Tiffanys. Natural lakes and manmade reservoirs built to quench thirsty New Yorkers add additional opportunities for power and non-power boating.

Village Living You love walking, window-shopping and having everything nearby. You’re a natural conversationalist on a first-name basis with your barista—they even spell yours correctly. Our cultured villages embody the best of neighborhood living without the big city chaos: sidewalk neighborhoods, eclectic shops, exciting restaurants and the possibility of car-free commuting to Midtown. Begin your mornings wandering leafy lanes towards an energetic Main Street of momand-pop shops, heading to Metro North at the heart of town. You might even run into the occasional local celebrity, who too made the realization that turning the pace down just a notch while keeping the city within reach ranks high in enriching life decisions. Each community has its own unique personality, with individuality being the only constant. Sidewalk sales are a spring rite. Independently-owned businesses add color and local pride capturing the spirit and perseverance of these unique places to live. Discover more Village homes: nyvill.hlre.co
