Top riders saddle up for this year’s
Nissan Winter Classic
O
One of the year’s most anticipated showjumping contests – and a FEI World Cup Qualifier event – the Nissan Winter Classic will be returning to the stunning Shongweni Club from 13 to 17 June, bringing with it unrivalled equestrian showmanship and unmissable family fun. “We are thrilled to announce an incredibly high competing class at this year’s Nissan Winter Classic as a number of the country’s most revered riders have confirmed their participation in 2019,” said Mike Whitfield, Managing Director of Nissan SA. “Riders are always excited to compete at these idyllic showgrounds which promise an internationally-designed course as well as fantastic support from an enthusiastic audience. showed by the riders – the perfect reflection of the Nissan brand.” The Nissan Winter Classic forms the third of five elite events that make up the South African leg of the World Cup Jumping qualifiers. This annual event is renowned for attracting the country’s best riders and this year is no different. From Team Nissan, audiences can expect to watch skilled displays by husband-and-wife team and South African riders, Barry Taylor and Lorette Knowles-Taylor. The 2019 Nissan Winter Classic will also welcome back Chris van der Merwe - winner of a World Cup Qualifier, Grand Prix, Burlington Cup and Presidents Cup – after having missed out on the 2018 edition. Fresh from his double win at the Nissan Easter Festival and Reonet World Cup, Chris will be looking to take the win on Rene Fourie’s mare, Chantilly.

Renowned international showjumper, dressage rider and instructor, Dominey Alexander, will also feature at the Nissan Winter Classic, this year competing on Lisa Williams’ horse, Pilgrim, and RnR Gulliver, owned by Natalie Robertson, in the main title class. Other big-name riders include Musa Maluleke – riding Sunny Park Ultimo and Jethro in his first 1.20m classes this year – as well as the highlyrespected Team Nissan rider and trainer, Oscar Ncube. The 2019 event will also see the return of the Triggol family – dad, Govett, alongside daughter, Cayleigh and son, Thomas. Thomas – who competed in the Junior classes last year – has climbed the ranks and will be competing in the World Cup classes this year. He will have some tough competition from his dad who has just won the second leg World Cup Qualifier at Stokkiesdraai.
There will be 39 events taking place throughout the five-day competition including the 1.15 Filtec Pony Riders Championship and 1.50m Nissan Riders Grand Prix Tour; the popular Nissan 6-bar event (for juniors and adults); the 1.40m Nissan Championships and the main title class – the 1.5m Nissan FEI World Cup Qualifier. In addition to the quality showjumping entertainment, visitors to the Nissan Winter Classic are also treated to a host of family fun in the form of a dedicated Nissan children’s zone, the popular Nissan vehicle display and test drive, and a range of quality market stalls which will include food and beverage options. The annual Nissan Winter Classic also gives back to the local community in the form of charitable donations aimed at improving the local educational facilities. Previously, funds raised by Foresyte Shows & Langley Equestrian Centre contributed towards the establishment of a play area and upgrading the facilities at Umthombomuhle School in the Hammarsdale area. Funds raised in 2019 will continue to contribute to enhancing the school’s facilities, benefitting more than 100 schoolchildren. For more information about the Nissan Winter Classic, check Nissan Winter Classic 2019 and SA Showjumping on Facebook, visit www.foresyte.co.za, or contact Grant Langley on 082 859 2160

C A N I N E Myth Buster Myth - Medical & Behavioural issues are separate
L
Looking at the third freedom this month, we investigate the link between pain and behaviour. The other day I was chatting to a lovely client of mine who is recuperating from major surgery. Her recovery is going well, but she looked tired and explained that her levels of pain were very high, and that had worn her down. It had impacted her so much that she had felt a range of emotions from anger to hopelessness, being snappy, and feeling much like hiding away from the world. I sympathise, having battled with chronic pain myself over the last year. Once of the side effects of pain is the way it wears you down, affecting your entire personality, and this is the same for dogs. At least half of the dogs I see for behavioural issues are suffering from some kind of pain. Most often, when the pain issues are correctly dealt with, the behavioural issues magically improve! In those cases, at least two-thirds of the dogs guardians are unaware of the pain and do not link it to the behaviour at all. Most common pain issues revolve around old injuries and joint issues, mostly due to either genetics *bad breeding* or old age. This is not really breed specific but is more often noticed in large breed dogs, or those with physical tendencies to injury, for example long backed dogs, or those with sloping hips. As scientists learn more, the link between the physical body and behaviour grows stronger.
by Mandy Barrett
Pain assessment can be difficult in dogs, due to their natural leaning towards hiding pain and their stoic approach to dealing with it. One just has to watch a dog recover from sterilisation to be aware of this ability. One of the key areas to identifying pain is to be aware of behavioural shifts and to remain educated in the possible causes of increased irritability, which may lead to aggressive behaviours, like dogs fighting with each other, or dogs snapping at people. A proper assessment is required and a behavioural specialist will include a basic medical questionnaire and often recommend a full medical check-up at your vet. Common physical causes of behavioural change are orthopaedic pain, skin lesions and issues, bladder infections, thyroid issues, hearing and sight degeneration and epilepsy. Identifying areas of pain may be easier when looking to skin issues, but can be difficult to pick up when there are joint issues or digestive upsets. Being aware of any behavioural shifts is key to working towards identifying where your dog is out of balance physically. It is also important to remember that once the physical is dealt with, the emotional and behavioural problems will also need to be healed. Working with your dog requires a holistic approach, covering medical intervention, physiotherapy in some cases, training and behavioural modification.
Often, the behavioural side to medical issues are overlooked by both the owner of the dog and the veterinary practice. A key area to pay attention to in behaviour is the relationship between early life pain and illness and reactivity or nervousness in older dogs. Very often, a sick puppy is handled only medically, with little attention paid to the social learning that occurs during this phase of life. Second to this is that medical facilities for dogs do not accommodate for their natures, being noisy, clinical, full of strong scents, scary machinery, slippery surfaces and often enough, involving pain. We have long known that many dogs are afraid to go into the Vets rooms, and yet, we pay so little attention to their comfort. With humans, we know that pleasant surroundings, and activities like clowns to entertain sick children, speed up healing. To this end, it is time to consider making medical facilities for our pets more petfriendly too! Any behaviour in your dog that causes concern, from house soiling to aggression should be addressed in a manner that includes proper medical checks, blood tests (if recommended) and treatment that will eliminate pain. Any medical treatment should be looked at from a behavioural point of view as well, with recommendations for behavioural modification during healing. After all, dogs, like humans are made up of many parts! The Dog Guru Behaviorist and Trainer

Stew, Dumplings & Pudding! with Charlie Lakin
W
Well “Ech by Gum” it suddenly got blumming cold in this part of the world. To be honest though it’s my favourite time of the year, the air is clean and fresh and with the cold weather comes the desire for good and hearty home cooking. Long slow-cooked cheaper cuts of meat, tasty root vegetables, great tasting greens like Brussel sprouts, cabbage & kale which just like parsnips benefit from a good frost to sweeten them up. It’s a time of year that a wee dram becomes acceptable at lunch time so there’s all the excuse we need to be happy about the colder months. Just like a lot of the northern parts of Europe we Yorkshiremen have our traditional big pot dishes, so that’s this months’ recipes, good hearty Yorkshire cooking. 6 •
JUNE
To be honest, not coming from a wealthy family ‘n being one of 3 lads, hearty cooking was all year round cooking for us. The richness of the gravy ‘n cooking liquors meant plenty of starch could be added to the plate to soak up the gravy and fill us up. Hence the classic chips ‘n gravy (still a big favourite of mine) served at the chip shop or giant Yorkshire puddings filled with stew, a great pub classic and a go-to after a nights drinking.
Serves 6 normal people (4 if you are like me).
All the ladies of our family were great cooks, well apart from me Auntie Mary who seemed to bugger up everything! Still to this day I haven’t figured out what she used to do to her egg and bacon pie. Somehow the egg always mixed with the pastry and ended up a dry horrible thing.
1 large onion, roughly chopped
Just like everyone in S.A. has their own Potjie or Curry recipe, our family recipe was stew ‘n dumplings. I have to give my good lady wife Paula her credit she makes a mean beef stew but instead of dumplings she puts on a big tasty crust. So first up I think I should share my stew ‘n dumplings recipe. Now at home we had the wood burning Rayburne which had to be going most of the time as it was how the house and water was heated and we used to put the stew in to cook slowly all day. You can do the same with a Wonder Bag (great piece of kit) or a slow cooker with a timer to avoid burning or overcooking.

1kg stewing beef. Now my preference is shin, bone-in with a nice big muscle cartilage as it goes like jelly when it is cooked right. Cubed short-rib is also a great choice but please not goulash beef, that stuff is dreadful.
4 cloves garlic 1 bottle Ale (I would highly recommend Clockwork Brewery Bitter or English best bitter, in fact buy extra to drink with dinner) 4 sticks celery, roughly chopped 2 large carrots 3 turnips (medium sized and firm shiny skin are the best) 2 large potatoes 250ml good beef stock (if using powdered stock add a spoonful of Bovril or Marmite) 2 Tbsp Thyme (use half the amount if dried) 2 Bay Leaves 1 Tbsp Worcester sauce Salt & Pepper
Dumplings: 400g Self raising flour 150g grated beef suet (ask your local small butcher to organise. It’s not the same without it but beef fat/dripping could also work.) Water Salt & Pepper I know some people like to marinade the beef beforehand but personally I’m not a fan. I prefer a cleaner flavour to each and every ingredient. Lightly coat the beef in heavily seasoned flour. In a heavy based pot which will fit in the oven, heat a bit of beef dripping or vegetable oil until red-hot, add the beef and brown all over. Don’t stir too often as this slows down the browning process. Once all the meat is browned, remove from the pot and keep aside. Add more fat to the pan, and fry the onion until golden and soft. Add the garlic and celery and cook for 1 minute. Add the ale to the pan, scraping all the browned, tasty bits off the base of the pot. Bring to the boil and hold it on the boil for a few minutes then add the beef, carrots and turnips chopped into bite sized pieces and cook for another 10 minutes with the lid off, on a simmer. Add the potatoes, again large bite sized pieces, stock, herbs and Worcester sauce. Bring back to the boil, cover with a lid and place in the oven at 150 degrees C for 1½ hours or
wonder bag for the day or overnight. Once the meat is tender remove from the oven and season the liquor. The Dumplings (I can eat these by themselves.) Mix the flour, suet and seasoning together and gradually add water until you get slightly tacky dough. Split the dough into 8 pieces and roll into balls, place on top of the stew, replace the lid and put back into the oven turned up to 170 degrees C for 10 minutes. Remove the lid and bake for another 5 mins to crisp the top. Eat with some fresh boiled cabbage and a pint. Toad in the Hole. This really is memory lane for me. My mum’s was great, mine is damn good but the best one was my friend Gazza’s mom when we were at college. She always made it for us when we all stayed at his house, just like my mom was stew ‘n dumplings and Trotties mum was lasagne. Now the most important thing is the sausage, needs to have plenty of flavour, very little extra water and a good fat content. Oh and a good Yorkie recipe, luckily I’m giving you mine. 8 good quality sausages 6 large eggs ½ pint milk
385g plain flour Salt and Pepper First up mix the eggs, milk, water and flour for the Yorkshire batter and season. The mix should coat the back of a spoon after a good whisk up, then pass through a sieve and leave to rest. In a medium sized deep side oven tray or a pyrex roasting dish, lightly cook the sausages in a little oil in a 190 degree oven. When the sausages are just cooked, add the yorkie batter, it should leave a bit of the sausage above the mix and place back in the oven and bake for 15-20 mins. Try to resist opening the door until you are certain the crust is set and starting to colour. At this point turn it around and cook for a further 5 mins. You are aiming for nice, well risen sides, tasty crunchy tops to the sausages and a nice savoury, meaty flavoured thick pancake mix. Serve immediately with onion gravy and some veg. If you are using a basic sausage you can add the extra flavour by adding some fried onions in with the sausages or some dried thyme in the batter. I still haven’t tried with Wors yet, so if anyone does please let me know how it goes. Oh ‘n also if there is any leftover batter you can either make some Yorkshire Puddings or crepes. (Waste not, want not).
½ pint water (use a pint glass to measure)

Outdoor Entertaining by Lindsay Gray
W
We live in a country blessed with good weather. It is certainly possible to entertain outdoors in both summer and winter, with the warm winter months often more pleasant than those in the height of summer. Most homes have an outdoor patio, either open to the elements or partially protected with some form of roofing overhead. Others are fully enclosed with sliding or stacking glass doors or all-weather blinds. However, in this blissful climate, you seldom find entertainment areas situated away from the house, which is a great pity, given all the advantages of enjoying your garden from a different perspective. Early morning: I maintain that the play of light has much to do with how and when we use our gardens for relaxation. The east side (west facing) of a property is usually most enjoyable for that first cup of tea or coffee or a leisurely breakfast in the shade of either your or your neighbour’s trees. I often suggest to students that they create a seating area outside their main bedroom if it is feasible to have an exit point leading off the main bedroom. If this isn’t possible, then another

suitable area can be found where you can sit and enjoy the fresh morning air and watch all the early-morning bird activity. Midday: The main patio is certainly a convenient place to entertain but, if you have the space, why not move beyond the house to under the trees where you can enjoy a meal with friends and family. In summer, trees provide a lovely, cool area for entertaining while, in winter, there is nothing nicer than sitting under a tree that has lost its leaves where the warm winter sun filters through bare branches. Late afternoon: This has to be my favourite time of the day in which to enjoy a cup of coffee outdoors. My dogs love to play ball in the cooler part of the day and the birds are getting ready to settle down for the night. Choose a spot where you can enjoy our glorious sunsets. Evening entertaining: It is pure magic sitting under the stars – or a tree draped with fairy lights – and enjoying a meal. If it is a bit chilly, then a firepit is the perfect place to huddle around a fire with friends.
2019 • HOUND & HORSE
Hard surfacing: It is not necessary to spend a lot of money on providing a suitable hard surface for these alternate outdoor areas. The area can be retained with a cobble stone, a brick laid on its side or old branches, and filled with a fine gravel that won’t damage shoes. If you would prefer to lay paving in that area, simply demarcate the area, dress it with a medium to fine grade of river sand, firm it down, lay the paving and brush over some fine river sand or plaster sand to fill the gaps. Creating a canopy: You might enjoy sitting under a gazebo in the evening and these are easy to construct out in the open or under the canopy of a tree. I built a gazebo for myself using treated timber poles for both the vertical support and the cross bars. I chose the indigenous grape, Rhoicissus tomentosa to grow over the gazebo as it looks similar to the edible grape vine with its rich wine-red autumn leaves. Paths and lighting: It is not very pleasant walking across dewy grass in the morning or trying to blunder through the dark, so
always ensure that you have installed a comfortable path to your outdoor area, at least 800mm to 1000mm wide, especially if you need to carry food to this area. Again, if you don’t want to go to the expense of laying pavers, use old branches or bricks to demarcate the path using either a fine gravel or shredded pine bark mulch underfoot. I don’t like bark chips on a path as their surface can be unstable and are not great for little ones’ feet or for older folk. Use inexpensive solar lights to illuminate the path. Fragrance: It’s lovely to have fragrant plants in the vicinity of an outdoor entertainment area. Star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) or Murraya exotica will do the trick as well as bedding petunias and some of the tropical foliage plants such as Cordyline and Draceana species, when they are in flower.
– Cattleya and Brassica species to name just two - have a lovely scent both morning and evening. These can be mounted on the trees close to where you are entertaining. And then of course there is a wide variety of herbs such as pelargoniums, lavender, rosemary, sage, the mint family, thyme and oreganum that give off a wonderful perfume when you brush against them. All of these can be planted near your outdoor entertainment areas. If you enjoy these ideas, we would love to receive photos of any new entertainment that you create. Ask Ginny Scooper Dear Ginny, My horse is really difficult to load into a horsebox. Please help! Dear Owner of a Difficult Loader, It can be most frustrating when your horse refuses to load. Here are a few tips to help with this testy issue The most important thing to remember when working to solve this is that you are on Horse-Time. It may take more than one session to fix the issue, don’t be in a hurry, there is always tomorrow. •
Set aside time to practice loading and practice regularly. Don’t try to fix the problem on the morning of a competition.
•
Keep your cool. It can very frustrating when your horse refuses to move, remain calm. If you lose your temper you will have lost.
•
Work slowly and deliberately with your horse and walk forward to the box with a purpose. If you become nervous and jumpy, so will your horse.
•
Set yourself and your horse up for success. If your horse jumps off the side of the ramp, park the trailer alongside a fence or a wall to limit your horses’ options for bailing out the side.
•
Bigger horseboxes are better. Horses tend to be claustrophobic, so a wide and light airy box is ideal
•
Pay attention to risks. If your horse is part way into the box, be careful not to pull on the headcollar so hard that the horse resists and goes up and hits his head on the roof. This will really scare him and add to their dislike of loading.
•
Once your horse is in, that is great. Give a big reward. Go back the next day and do the same so that they learn to load consistently. You may consider loading, closing the ramp and giving a reward and then offloading. You may also want to take him for a short easy trip around the block. Mix it up, this is the best way to ensure that you have solved the problem.
Make sure that you always drive carefully, imagine you are standing in the back with no railing to hang onto. Have you ever been on a train or bus and there is nothing to grab onto to steady yourself ? This is how your horse may feel. Rushing to a competition and taking corners or bumpy roads at speed can scare your equine passenger. Always factor in extra time for loading and travel, it is well worth your while Yours Ever Ginny
