hen the owners of a Birmingham Tudor on a lot that had enough space for another structure decided their existing garage was j ust too tight, a new detached two-car garage with a hangout for kids above got the ball rolling for a complete outdoor overhaul. “ The concern was that it would feel crowded, but it made the space feel more open and interesting by extending the driveway and tying the landscape to the new building,” says Ben Heller, president of Heller & Associates in Pontiac, who worked on the addition. A custom mahogany door sets the tone for the structure, which blends stucco with cedar accents and copper gutters. For the driveway and landscape, Heller brought in Matt Mosher, a landscape architect with Mosher Design Co. in Royal Oak. Mosher worked with the homeowners to refresh the dated layout of the backyard. “ They wanted to create a really fun but sophisticated area, incorporating the existing pool into a more refined look with usable space, he sa s. “ Our goals, based on theirs, were to understand how to make the space more functional and add interesting elements that were softer, so it felt warm. We also wanted to come up with a completely unique design that was unexpected.” I nspiration came from several surprising elements inside the classic home, like furniture with clean lines. “ We wanted to carry these outside for a modern combination that still respects the architecture,” Mosher says. The refurbished pool and cabana j oin new bluestone that complements warm elements like a wood planting trough near the dining area, which provides a sense of enclosure. “ We imagine the outside j ust like the inside of a house, he sa s. or proper flow, we break it up into rooms.” A glorious hanging lounger ( The N est) provides a perfect perch near the new doublesided fireplace, where the updated cabana with an Asian-inspired roof features plant material TUDOR TURNAROUND

that softens the space. The plantings include boxwood and spherical cedar, along with white hydrangea and miniature Russian sage. “ I t’s an edited palette of green, purple, and white, but it’s rich and warm,” Mosher says. “ N ow the family’s out there more than they’re in their house,” he adds. “ They like to entertain and have small dinner parties. I t’s j ust a space that

feels good to be in.” The homeowners agree. “ We have this old Tudor from the 1920s, which is a mixed space with elements that are streamlined and organic, and old and new. What Matt and Ben did so well was to incorporate the same feel from the inside to the outside,” the wife says. “ One of the silver linings of the pandemic is to be able to utilize the outdoor space. s a natural extension of an interior renovation, Dan Davis and Paul Johnson, co-owners of Dan Davis Design in Ferndale, helped their bachelor client, Joe L uther — who has since married — create an extra-special outdoor space. L andscape architect Michael J. Dul, director of design at Birminghambased Michael J. Dul & Associates I nc., was also instrumental in the transformation. Welcome additions include a back porch with heated floors and retractable screens. The color

palette used indoors, featuring blues and other hues, spills from inside out, as seen on the teak seating with custom upholstery that surrounds a custom table made from an old beam. A stained cedar ceiling caps the cozy space. Free-form pieces of bluestone that Dul calls “ peanut brittle” lead the way to the spa area and garden patio, where an infinit -edge whirlpool and an organic fireplace and landscape await. nd while the modest lot ma be standard for Birmingham, the unique fence made from white cedar logs was a first for ul. N ative varieties used in the landscape design include spruce and hemlock trees, and arborvitae. Hydrangea, azalea, and myrtle add further interest. The accent plants contrast with the fine texture of the evergreens, and the flower shrubs not onl bloom, but have nice, thick leaves, sa s ul,

who also added a small garden where L uther can plant his own floral mix. The buffer landscape and natural plantings create a ver efficient and intimate space that lives larger because ever thing flows together, ul adds. uther wanted a en feeling with natural elements, reminiscent of northern ichigan. When ou re in the space, ou can see the surface of the water reflect the flames of the fireplace, ul sa s. ou appreciate the subtleties, like the lighting that makes the space come alive at night. In addition to helping with furniture and other selections, avis and ohnson also consulted

on the placement of the fireplace and seating arrangements. oe wanted the flow from inside to outside to be consistent, so it s one cohesive space visuall , avis sa s. dds ohnson e wanted the back ard to feel like it s been there. e loves going up north and wanted it to feel naturalistic. It looked like an empt ard, but now it looks like it s been there for ears. The pro ect was completed shortl before the pandemic began, and it s been a blessing ever since. There are so man places to sit and it s so comfortable. ust being in the back ard was like getting out, and I had relatives over with social distancing. It turned out to be a great haven for us, sa s uther, who also appreciates the mature silver maple he named lfred, believed to be ears old. “ I t’s not an overwhelming building. Dating to 1918 , the historic Albert Kahn-designed Detroit G olf Club in Palmer Park recently debuted The Ross G rille as part of an extensive renovation that provides a classy/ casual environment in which members and their guests can gather. Rich woods, lush fabrics, and soft lighting create a comfortable atmosphere that connects to the partially covered outdoor patio, where a gas fireplace benefits indoor and outdoor diners alike. dirondack chairs surround a gas fire pit near a sculpture of the grille’s namesake, Donald Ross, a Scottish-born architect who designed all 3 6 holes

at DG C. His brother, Alex, won the U .S. Open in 1907 and was head golf professional at DG C for almost 3 0 years, from 1916 to 194 5. Todd Mathews, vice president and lead designer at Comus Consulting in Ann Arbor, worked on the remodel, which opened up the entry and the restaurant and added a private dining room. A climate-controlled wine cave and wine lockers for members are among the additions to the bar. “ The transitional style blends permanent features with more contemporary elements like the bold carpet. We tried to be sensitive and pay homage to Albert Kahn,” Mathews says. Adds Bruce ( Skip) L emon, club president: “ The clubhouse is a precious gem for us, and The Ross G rille is the heart of the club. Many of our members consider it an extension of their own home.”

MARINO'S LANDSCAPE Using Old World charm such as teak wood, limestone, and exposed aggregate, the linear design offers views of the pool from every angle of the home. The geometrical European landscape has an unexpected twist — a touch of some Las Vegas resort-style landscaping — making the overall effect simple and complicated at the same time. Cut limestone masonry walls and clean-cut diamond concrete surround the pool.

Five separate elevations had to relate to the architecture, and transition in a way that met municipal restrictions. The result is a backyard that’s perfect for outdoor entertainment, play space, a garden, and maintaining views of the wooded area. The beautiful forestlike backdrop, enhanced by extensive vertical lighting of the trees, creates a lovely evening ambiance.

USE OF COLOR

Designers’ G oal The owner of this restored home wanted the new kitchen to have a unique and cozy feel complementary to the historical nature of the rest of the house, but not necessarily historical in and of itself. The use of color would play an important role for this to be accomplished. The final design features a multilayered fabric treatment. The layers provide a softness that’s juxtaposed against the wood walls; the fabrics and trim blend traditional grandeur with a whimsical airiness and pop of color.

READERS’ CHOICE | BEST OVERALL HOME

Modern Farmhouse Takes First Place M.J. Whelan Construction PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFF GARLAND

K

udos all around to the folks at Milford-based M.J. Whelan Construction, which took first place in the Readers’ Choice award for Best Overall Home. The winning beauty is perfectly situated on a sprawling four-acre site in the historic village of Milford. At 5,000 square feet, the modern Farmhouse-style home, completed in 2019, looks as if it’s been there for at least 100 years. This new-build replaced an existing home on the expansive property. Double doors create a welcoming entry, where a stately foyer leads to a staircase with tall wainscoting and classic millwork that extends to the second story. Coffered ceilings set the tone for the cozy home, while tall doors and bowed windows stretch from the lower-level walkout to the main floor.

Timeless design features include wood floors, warm tones, and distinctive spaces like the great room and its fireplace, and the splendid main-floor master suite. Charming details define the exterior, which features a black-andwhite palette and exudes classic character and even a hint of Southern flair. With a mix of design characteristics, including a wraparound porch and a metal roof, traditional meets modern in this winning combination. The striking structure also includes a spacious covered patio, complete with a fireplace and a built-in barbecue. Its tongue-andgroove ceiling, with open timbers, creates additional beauty. A carriage house that’s destined to become a recreational space also is located on the pretty property. Well done, M.J. Whelan Construction!

RIGHT AT HOME

At 5,000 square feet, the Readers’ Choice winner has classic appeal with modern touches throughout. The timeless Farmhouse-style home features an inviting kitchen and breakfast area as well as a welcoming foyer with fabulous millwork.

2021 REAL ESTATE ALL-STARS

A Life-Changing Decision Deserves an on Your Team Now more than ever, when it comes to real estate you want someone with experience, knowledge, and an unparalleled work ethic guiding you on one of the most important decisions you’ll make in your life. So you might as well choose an All-Star! With everything that happened in 2020, along with the carryover to 2021, you really want an expert — an All-Star — helping you through the challenges that lead you to the rewards. Buying or selling a house isn’t about square feet, a finished basement, or a three-car garage; it’s about making a sound business decision that not only helps give you all the

REASSection_FP_DD_SU21.indd 125

things that matter most to you in a home, but with a price tag and financial commitment that makes sense. For Hour Media’s Real Estate All-Stars 2021, we commissioned Professional Research Services (PRS) to conduct a survey of all metro Detroit brokers and agents, to determine the top agents and mortgage professionals in the area. Agents who were chosen as Real Estate AllStars had a total residential sales volume that fell within the top 5 percent of metro Detroit agents. The mortgage professionals on our list came highly recommended by agents and brokers in the region, and the mortgage professionals with

the most votes were the ones who were named Real Estate All-Stars for 2021 in the mortgage category. Inclusion in Hour Media’s Real Estate All-Star list is based solely upon merit; there’s no commercial relationship to the listings, and listings cannot be purchased. While metro Detroit has many experienced real estate and mortgage professionals, the ones listed here are considered Hour Media’s Real Estate All-Stars. These Real Estate AllStars know the communities they serve. They can best guide you, whether it’s a buyer’s or seller’s market, and introduce you to the home of your dreams. ■

SHOWROOM SPOTLIGHT

VIRGINIA TILE COMPANY Virginia Tile, founded in Detroit in 1928, established itself as a design leader and materials resource early on by taking advantage of the many opportunities offered by the growth of the automobile industry. From that beginning, Virginia Tile has distinguished itself in serving the needs of the wholesale building industry and the company continues to grow and set the standards for style and design. Their staff’s attention to the requirements of clients and customers has given them the privilege of becoming the leading tile distributor in the Midwest, now servicing Michigan and 13 other states. Meeting the demands of all Residential and Commercial requirements, Virginia Tile is known for its complete range of products, representing the finest manufacturers in the world. Virginia Tile is proud to announce that in July, they will be opening a new, beautifully appointed, 9,000-squarefoot showroom in Troy, at 900 Maple, featuring all the latest tile trends. Virginia Tile looks forward to helping you with your next project

E.W. KITCHENS The term “modern kitchen” can summon visions of cold, simple rooms, devoid of warmth, personality or embellishments. However, the design experts at E.W. Kitchens believe modern kitchen design can be inviting, warm, and even classic. Seeking a well-thought out and organized kitchen, robust enough for avid cooks, homeowners Eli and Michele Saulson sought out the design team at E.W. Kitchens. As big entertainers, their remodel goals included a space that flowed openly to other areas of the home and created a central gathering space. With a style that leans towards clean lines, neutral tones and natural materials, Michele, who doubled as homeowner and designer, knew the interplay of materials used in the space was key. The E.W. Kitchens team then got to work creating a design that delivered warmth, depth, and interest throughout. Incorporating natural elements was an integral part of this design, which was done by creating the custom refrigerator panels and oversized island in walnut. To keep the island streamlined, E.W. Kitchens designed a custom c-channel pull, which showcases a handleless way to open the island cabinetry, keeping the island free of unnecessary hardware. The rich walnut cabinetry provides a stark contrast against the white slab doors used in the perimeter of the kitchen. Another characteristic of a classic modern kitchen is a full-height backsplash, in this case with classic-veined porcelain. The Dream Team at E.W. Kitchens is ready to bring your modern dream kitchen to life. For more information, visit ewkitchens.com.
