The millwork over this fireplace is a showstopper — more than 130 interlocking pieces of walnut make up this work of art. It’s large format, at 12 feet wide and 10 feet tall, and fits the scale of the room perfectly. During the day, sunlight streams across it from the living room’s soaring windows. At night, it’s lit by a cascade of light from above. It’s an elaborate puzzle that ties into the millwork found throughout the home.

The 12-foot ceiling turned out to be an advantage for the unique elevation in this kitchen. Floating niches bridge the space between the upper cabinets and the ceiling. The quartered walnut, with a custom ashen finish, features a high-gloss linen to add texture and dimension. The oversized island is equipped with drawers on either side, to accommodate all the necessities required to serve up a special cocktail.

This custom banquette was first upholstered in a gray fabric. Lacking warmth, it was brought back to the workroom and recovered in a natural Belgian linen with a contrasting seat cushion in a tribal white block print. The scale of the back of the banquette was specially measured to accommodate the artwork over it. Side upholstered wings provide the perfect nook to curl up in, making this a sought-after spot in the home.

The backsplash tiles are beveled mirrors that add a textural quality similar to sunlight catching on the rippling waters of a lake. Crowning the backsplash is an elegant, mirrored range hood. When the sun is setting, it reflects a cascade of colors across the kitchen; at night, it shines with the lights from the cove ceiling and glass globe chandeliers. The kitchen also features stainless steel-and-glass upper cabinets with interior lighting that highlights a decorative glassware collection.

This contemporary new home features a stunning floor-to-ceiling fireplace of Marmi Maximum Bright Onyx stone. The mitered edges fold into an intricate Labrys (walnut puzzle) inset panel, and the elegance of the long linear firebox with a black reflective glass back panel offset by black stone accents at either side provides balance to the stunning panel art above. The wall is anchored by a floating hearth in the same onyx that runs up the wall.

KILANO DESIGN + BUILD

In this residence, the kitchen is situated in the center of an open-concept layout with a single usable cabinetry wall. To give it a dramatic look, the entire range hood was wrapped in the same Calacatta marble used on the backsplash. Multiple Calacatta Corchia slabs were carefully selected for their veining patterns and arranged in perfect cohesion. Every edge was meticulously mitered and matched, to make this stunning wall perfect and seamless from every angle.

The stair and rail area has more than 20 feet of open space. The floating stairs add a focal point of interest. The tile, made in Israel, provided a unique opportunity to lighten the space and give it a warm, textural feel. The custom placement of the tiles allows the surprise of illuminating lighting.

There are few things as relaxing and enjoyable as pouring drinks for friends in a cozy space, and this bar was created for that! Dark crocodile leather, walnut, darkened steel, and Greystone marble-like porcelain create depth, intrigue, character, and mood. Accent lighting via concealed LED light channels in the cabinetry and porcelain shelves further enhance the deep mood of the space, while visually highlighting the homeowner’s curated collection of art, literature, and spirits.

A three-level glass and black walnut wood staircase sets the stage for the sophisticated style found throughout this home. The black walnut floating treads and glass railing allow natural light to fill the exciting see-through foyer. This is a perfect example of what happens when form and function are used to complement a contemporary home.
