was 5 or 6 years old when I embarked on my first sleepover at a friend’s home. But it never happened, at least technically speaking. Rather than spending the night, I left my pal at about 9 p.m. when, at my behest, my mom came to get me. Why? Well, it was all about the surroundings. First of all, my friend’s parents seemed ancient to me (they probably were in their mid-40s, but they came across as so much older than that). In addition, I just wasn’t into their antiques-filled, dark home. My friend’s bedroom wasn’t cheery, the floors were cold, adornments were sparse, and I wanted out. Although the idea of spending the night away from home had seemed like an exciting adventure, I wasn’t comfortable there and, as a result, my heart was not into it! Fast-forward four years or so. I went to Albany, N.Y. (alone!) to visit my godmother, a single woman. She was an administrator at a nursing school and lived near a hospital in an apartment that was strikingly similar to a college dorm. I slept on a cot that hovered above a 1960s brown industrial-style floor. I loved my godmother dearly, but I couldn’t wait to get out of her meagerly decorated, small apartment. A few years later, I was visiting a good friend in Ohio, again without my parents! Talk about being homesick. Every night when we went to sleep, I prayed that the next day would zoom by so that I could finally go home. Although I missed my family dearly, I must admit that I also was anxious to get back to my own bedroom and its blue furnishings, light-blue bed-

spread, thick powder-blue carpeting, and crisp white drapery trimmed with lime-and-blue tassels. When my head meets the pillow, I want to feel at peace. Cold floors — not to mention too much practical and not enough pretty — won’t inspire any sweet dreams. When I think about great guest rooms or boutique hotels I’ve stayed in, I can honestly say I’ve had the best sleep in rooms featuring top-drawer bed linens, interesting art, and chic appointments. This issue is a veritable treasure trove of lovely bedrooms, from children spaces to master suites to guest/ nanny quarters. I guarantee if you hit the hay in any one of these rooms, your sleep score will soar. I remember telling Lauren Tolles, founder of Maison Birmingham and co-owner of KSI, that I’d be happy to be her nanny. When she gave me a tour of the thirdfloor nanny quarters in her Birmingham home, I was thinking, I do love kids! Seriously, it’s that nice, with marble finishes, contemporary furniture, and a lovely ambiance. Another spectacular guest apartment can be found at the home of interior designer Ann-Marie Anton’s parents. Anton, who runs It’s Personal Design in Grosse Pointe Woods, fashioned a caregiver apartment — which has been used by visiting family and friends — as a self-contained space that boasts an urban vibe. And it has its own entrance! Then there’s the Seattle guest room designed by Anna Versaci, of Anna Versaci Design in Beverly Hills, Mich. Floral wallpaper, yellow velvet pillows, black walls, and a Mid-century-inspired George Nelson Ball Bubble pendant create a look — and feeling — that’s just perfect. Whether you’re interested in updating a guest room, master suite, or child’s bedroom, this issue is packed with ideas for creating welcoming spaces that are guaranteed to produce a good night’s sleep, complete with visions of sugarplums and other lovely things. Before we know it, the winter holidays will arrive — and, with them, kids’ sleepovers and overnight guests. Are your bedrooms ready?

he two things a Grosse Pointe Park couple with two grown sons wanted to keep in their master bedroom were their headboard, upholstered in a brown velvet, and their wool carpeting, which was a natural beige color. Everything else could change, they told their interior designer, Kourtney Shammo. At the time, Shammo, who has two degrees (one is interior design and the other is in business administration, both from Baker College), was working with Troy- and Detroit-based Petrella Designs Inc. The designer, who has since launched her own design firm, Kourtney Anne Studios in Birmingham, recalls that the project was fun and successful. “(The master bedroom) had a very dull red paint on the walls and there was a wood armoire that was bulky in size and heavy in color,” says Shammo, who’s been in the design industry for a decade. “The goal was to lighten up the space and create a sanctuary.” Thankfully, the room has a lot of natural light. Shammo decided that the brown (from the headboard) could be the neutral in the room. “I knew it wouldn’t be difficult to work with,” she says. But, she adds, because of the headboard’s dark color and size, it could quickly become a focal point, which she wanted to avoid. “The room is long, so our idea for a layout ‘stacks’ the bed with the settee (from Hickory Chair) in front, and then two chairs (from Lee Industries with a Rozmallin fabric) and an ottoman (also from Hickory Chair) are in a cozy coffee/reading area.” Like a conductor orchestrating a symphony of coordinating sounds and notes, Shammo’s first “movement” started by choosing a new grasscloth wallcovering from Schumacher for an accent wall. “That’s what sets the tone for the room. It makes the ceiling seem higher and it takes your eye up,” she says. The designer selected a gorgeous Jim Thompson fabric for the settee. “If you look closely, it has a subtle pattern and texture, so it adds just enough

detail and isn’t flat,” she explains. The settee’s color was selected because it echoes, like a repeat theme in music, the headboard’s shade. “We wanted the brown to be elsewhere in the room, so the eye travels; the settee balances the space.” The blush, just-the-right-pink fabric (by Jab Anstoetz from Rozmallin) for the swivel chairs creates more rhythm in the room. “It’s not too pink and is a very sophisticated color. It works well with the grasscloth wallcovering,” Shammo notes. As for the gem-like emerald green ottoman (also from Jim Thompson Fabrics, Tennant & Associates), it’s a feast for the eyes — and the perfect spot for resting one’s feet after a long day. Its color is repeated on the bed’s bolster, again allowing the eye to travel and pick up repeats in tone. Neutral cotton-blend drapery from Pindler keeps the look soft. Hickory Chair nightstands (which Shammo adores) in cream with brass details are timeless and evoke a mod-traditional vibe. The Visual Comfort sconces repeat the brass, making everything feel especially balanced. “There’s a flow and repeats,” Shammo says. Large art (from Wendover Art Group) featuring a charming bird motif hangs above the bed. The entire space has a monochromatic feel, but still offers interest and details that are reminiscent of perfect hits of staccato in a musical piece. “The depth is in the fabrics, like the mohair pillow (Schumacher with a faux-leather Samuel & Sons blush-pink trim) on the settee, which ties in with the pink from the chairs,” Shammo explains. “You just need one pillow like that.” Overall, Shammo says approaching the design was about being thoughtful about the space so it could live up to its potential. “It’s about a feeling,” she says. “What was the design that would make the room speak?”

A timeless feel travels throughout this master bedroom’s updated space. “This room is in a traditional, Grosse Pointe-area home,” the designer says. “We kept the tradition, but made it more clean and streamlined, and not overly ornate.”

Gorgeous Guest Room Designer Anna Versaci turns out a romantic retreat in a Seattle home TEXT BY TRACY DONOHUE PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTIN HARRIS

hen Beverly Hills, Mich.based designer Anna Versaci, of Anna Versaci Design, started working with a client who had recently relocated from New York City to a loft in Seattle for a job in the medical field, she wanted to help the homeowner express her own style in her new home. Part of that style included a dramatic yet welcoming environment for overnight guests. The project came to Versaci as a referral through a mutual friend when the Seattle homeowner admired the Michigan designer’s vision and work. “I love the psychology of business and design — working with people to give them what they want based on who they are and how they live,” Versaci says. “Coming from New York City, it was her dream to have a special home — one in which she had a place to host guests, entertain, and relax,” Versaci notes. “She has a lot of personal style and wasn’t afraid to take risks. When she told me ‘I want to go crazy’ and said she wanted to paint all the walls in the loft black, I was excited. I knew then that there was no need to dial back on design. It was fun envisioning how it would all come together.” According to Versaci, the overall design of the guest room was one of simplicity paired with a sultry, romantic boutique hotel look and feel, plus a touch of fun. “We started with the graphic floral wallpaper and layered from there. The white bedding with a

textured neutral throw and yellow velvet pillows pops against the black walls and ceiling,” Versaci explains. “The painting above the bed was already owned by the client, and worked well with the mood of the rest of the room.” Since maximizing storage is often a consideration in a loft space, Versaci placed leather woven-front bachelor chests on both sides of the guest bed, topping them with “cool, moody lamps” that complement the Mid-century-inspired white George Nelson Ball Bubble Pendant light fixture. Versaci notes there were some logistical challenges with the project leading up to the installation, since she’s based in Michigan and the home is in Seattle, but nothing extraordinary affected the homeowner’s delight in the finished room. “Our shared vision and goal was to make the guest room really dramatic, but the collaboration and trust between us throughout the project made it successful and fun.”

Distinctive chairs in the living area, which doubled as a schoolhouse for the kids during the pandemic, look great from any angle, while built-ins provide storage. “It’s very light and airy, but also warm with the stone and the gold, tan, and gray tones,” she adds. The white shiplap ceiling complements warm gray walls. A well-equipped kitchen has a NanaWall window with a counter for outdoor dining. Accessed by a staircase behind the stunning stone fireplace, the lower level features a living space, bedroom, and kitchenette. Each level has a full bathroom and laundry area. An outdoor seating area adds bonus space. When guests spend the night, an egress window in the basement bedroom makes the space feel light and cozy. “You could literally live in the entirety of the lower level and not come upstairs if the homeowners are entertaining by the pool,” Cetnar says. “The entire basement is fully functional.”

The goal was for someone to be able to live there and have company. “It’s casual, comfortable, and welcoming for one person, or for entertaining four to six people. Because it’s small, I wanted to keep it clean and uncluttered,” Anton says. “It’s really about being diligent in your space planning and making it as functional as you can,” she adds. “You have to picture yourself living there. eadlines can yield miracles. Just ask Meg Corley, founder and principal designer of Meg Corley Premier Interiors in Birmingham, who was put to the test with a 9,300-square-foot home remodel in Rochester that needed to be finished in time for the backyard wedding of her clients’ son. “We had pretty much demolished the entire home, and then the lockdown started,” Corley says. “The initial wedding date was moved to early September, and luckily my clients weren’t living (in the home). “We wanted to save the amazing bones and other details, like the molding that was already in place,” Corley continues, describing the Moceri custom home which was built in 1999. (Mario Moceri, one of the owners of Moceri Custom

Homes, had lived in the home.) The property made quite the impression on Steven and Anne DiMaggio, who have four grown children. “It has an amazing backyard. They fell in love with the pond, four waterfalls, and the bridge, and they wanted to love the inside just as much,” Corley says. Classic updates make a statement right from the start, with a series of intaglio prints above a smoky gray velvet sofa in the great room, near the entrance. “It’s very dramatic,” Corley says. She explains that she considers the new look more current, with a relaxed traditional aesthetic. The existing millwork got a makeover, including the oak details in the library. “We used a really dark gel stain that made them sing a little more, and added wallcovering to the back of the

The wallcovering and ceiling beams draw the eye up, while the view to the terrace that overlooks the pool and pond is captivating. More eye candy can be found in the master

bathroom, where grasscloth covers the paneling. “It gives some warmth and texture,” Corley says. Wool carpet and a crystal chandelier join nightstands with a two-tone effect that add contrast to the more streamlined background. “It’s more traditional, so I wanted to marry the two to flow together, making it seem a little more timeless,” the designer explains. Embroidered floral draperies inspired the peaceful palette, which features warm neutrals on a wider spectrum that includes grays, coppers, and green at the forefront.

HEIRLOOM TREASURES Library Legends: The DiMaggio library, above, tells many stories, and not necessarily just in its books. First, there’s the family crest that hangs on one wall. Then there’s the pottery crafted by the couple’s children, and a sentimental stamp collection Anne DiMaggio received from her father. “It’s a wonderful place to go and sit, surrounded by family mementoes and memories,” homeowner Steven DiMaggio says. DiMaggio, who’s also passionate about baseball history, keeps a picture of his grandfather above the family crest to remind him of that. And how does Grandpa DiMaggio relate to baseball? Well, it’s in the name. Legendary center fielder Joe DiMaggio was Steven’s grandfather’s cousin. — JM

The master bath was demolished to open up the space. “It had a lot of angles and they wanted a larger shower, so we had to square things up to get that great shower and a freestanding tub,” Corley says. A tile runway sets the tone as you walk through the double doors. “It gives a really great ground for the tub,” she says. The lower level, meanwhile, was completely redone. “They wanted a lower level that felt like an extension of the rest of the home, not a basement,” Corley says. A TV built-in joins a custom coffee table that’s edged in leather and is a multifunctional piece. The lower-level dining area, where a new archway echoes the built-in, makes it easy to seat

20 for Thanksgiving dinner. A new powder room with feather wallpaper speaks to Anne’s fondness for whimsical motifs. “A little pattern pulls her heartstrings, and it plays well against the black-and-white hex marble,” Corley says. “A powder room should be like a jewelry box.” Corley, who was still installing two days before the wedding, deserves praise for her efforts, but she’s hesitant to take the spotlight. Instead, she credits her clients and colleagues for the project’s success. “They were so easygoing, and I couldn’t have done it without my staff and all the trades. It’s a team effort. I want to give them kudos.” Steven gives it right back: “Meg was very professional and she GC’d (general contracted) the project,” he says. Guests say they feel like they’re at a resort, and when the wedding planner posted photos of the big day, people said: “I want to book my wedding there!”

“

his place is all about trees and nature,” says designer Jimmy Angell, owner of James Douglas Interiors in Birmingham. “The homeowners found an amazing lot on a ravine.” The interior of this newly-built 5,700-squarefoot, three-level family home in Ohio is as restful as the trees that surround it. The four-bedroom, four-bath, two half-bath home with a first-floor master utilizes a timeless neutral palette with natural materials that flow from room to room. “I’m a stickler that my interiors be cohesive,” the Detroit Design Award-winning Angell says. “I like there to be a change, but to still use an element from one space to another.” The homeowner, a manufacturer’s rep with whom Angell developed a friendship over the years, wanted something comfortable, beautiful, and livable that would highlight the property’s striking forest views. Angell used wood, iron, stone, and natural fabric (linen, wool, and cotton) to complete the design.

Angell says he loves to accessorize his interiors with found objects from all over the world, such as the circular barrel strap on the mantel in the living room, fabricated by Michael Barna Design Studio. On the wall next to the custom iron stairway, he hung intriguing vintage tools formerly used for testing cheese. His design work in this home is fastidiously symmetric and elegantly minimalistic, with clean, simple lines that complement the leafy outdoor views, beautiful millwork, and stunning lighting. The dwelling is warm and cushy, and offers different areas for entertaining in an open-plan configuration. Quarter-sawn oak flooring in antique brown creates a sense of continuity throughout the house. Keeping with the darker tones, many of the interior doors and window frames are black.

In the kitchen, which has two black soapstone islands and quartzite main counters, a glorious custom hood in blackened steel with stainless straps crowns the Thermador stove. Across the room, a lighted row of stainless-and-glass cabinets echoes the straps. The dining room, on the other side of the kitchen, features plush seating for six. Angell designed the unique console in the powder room with accents in brass. Meant to be seen, the exposed brass drain pipe, along with sconces and a mirror, also add interest against the abstract black-and-white-striped wallpaper. Off the kitchen is a screened-in room with a skylight, modern seating, and a handsome stone fireplace that keeps the homeowners snug and mellow through the changing colors and moods of the seasons. In the den, through the steel doors, Angell covered the ceiling with a faux bois wallcovering and paired it with linen Roman shades, dip-dyed black on the edges. A modern chandelier tops it all off in a space that’s perfect for putting up your feet and reading a book. The end result is everything the owners wanted, thanks to the fertile imagination of a trusted friend and brilliant designer. Indeed, Angell made the most of the orientation of the home and its large windows for the best forest views. Says the designer: “When a client trusts their designer, pure creativity is achieved.”

Laid-back Luxe Bloomfield Hills home evokes easygoing East Coast style TEXT BY KHRISTI ZIMMETH PHOTOGRAPHY BY BETH SINGER

“

ade for Living,” an oversized book on the coffee table in Rob and Colleen Nagle’s newly-built Bloomfield Hills home, sums up both the family’s overall design philosophy and their priorities. Located on a cul de sac, the house sits on a long and narrow 2.75-acre lot that abuts the Rouge River and was originally occupied by a house that dated to the 1930s. Prior owners had tried to renovate the home, but its proximity to the river caused a series of problems — issues that still hadn’t been solved when the Nagles first toured the existing structure. “We walked in and got blasted with mold and mildew,” Colleen remembers. “It was nasty.” The couple knew they might have to start from scratch to get what they wanted, and the property was the perfect blank slate they were looking for. “We were OK with knocking something down if we had to,” Colleen says. They had to. The couple purchased the lot in 2017 and brought in a team that included architect Alexander Bogaerts of Bloomfield Hills, builder Thomas Sebold & Associates Inc. of Bloomfield Hills, and Birmingham interior designer Marianne Jones and her assistant, Elle Tor. Together, they crafted a plan that included an approximately 6,600-square-foot home with five bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, and a 700-square-foot cabana. When building began in 2018, the family hoped to be in before the 2019 holidays. “(The builder) had people there seven days a week,” Colleen says. The Nagles’ wish list included a Shingle-style house similar to those found on Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and Cape Cod — a look that Colleen says was “right up Marianne’s alley.” One of their sons had worked at a summer job on the East Coast, and they had grown to love the architecture and the relaxing and laid-back feel often found in that region. “That look just screamed vacation to us,” Colleen says. “We wanted the house to feel like a retreat.” Jones was on board from the start. “Nantucket is my happy place, so I knew exactly the vibe they wanted,” she says, adding that the philosophy extended to the home’s easygoing yet elegant interiors. Choices included low-maintenance porcelain countertops in the kitchen (“they needed it to be bulletproof for the family,” Jones explains), fun wallpapers, and multipurpose spaces that welcome their large extended family, yet also work when it’s

HEIRLOOM TREASURES Luck O’ the Irish: Choosing a favorite space is difficult, homeowner Colleen Nagle says, but her home’s lower-level Irish pub (left) — officially known as Ballynagle Public House, according to the sign — would definitely make the list. “We’re both Irish,” Colleen says of herself and her husband, Rob, “and we have a lot of family still in Ireland.” They also have a lot of family here, whom they can accommodate, Jones says, with “one of the longest bars I’ve ever seen.” The Nagles chose to honor their shared heritage in the space, which includes a lot of memorabilia inherited from family and brought back from trips, including a vintage hurling stick and a bodhran, a traditional 19th-century Irish drumlike instrument that resembles and evolved from the tambourine. “We had an Irish pub in our old house and wanted to build on that here,” Colleen says. “It’s our winter gathering spot.” — KZ

Get Smart Technology and clean lines play important roles in Ann Arbor renovation TEXT BY TRACY DONOHUE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFF GARLAND

hen Carl Calfin purchased his 1957 Ranch-style home in Barton Hills Village in 2015, it was all about location. Private, quiet, secluded, and close to downtown Ann Arbor, the home is situated on the golf course of the exclusive Barton Hills Country Club. To an avid golfer like Calfin, the view and easy access to the golf course were paramount. “Since there are only two houses on the golf course, I felt a responsibility to create something that blended in with the prestige of the country club,” Calfin says. “My vision was to have openness and high ceilings, and to invite the outside in with big windows, since (the house) backs up to the golf course.” Calfin focused on enhancing the home’s landscaping before beginning major renovations in the spring of 2018, ultimately taking the house from 2,000 to 3,500 square feet. After considering other architects, Calfin hired Brad Moore, of J. Bradley Moore & Associates Architect in Ann Arbor. The process of transforming Calfin’s vision into reality took nearly two years. “Carl loves golf, nature, and art, so we set about trying to build a home focusing on

his loves,” Moore explains. “It was similar to a lake house, with the challenges of topography and working with the existing house to see the (overall picture), while creating an interior environment with windows for views and walls for his increasing art collection.” The contractor selected for the project was Johnson Brothers Construction Ann Arbor. Owner Don Johnson served as the project manager and his son, Jake Johnson, assisted on the project. Once the renovation began, plans were updated and became more complex, in an effort to ensure the homeowner’s evolving vision became reality. What started out as an addition developed into gutting the whole house and leaving the original shell to build upon. “There are always special challenges with custom homes, and with making a 1950s Ranch a complete, finished contemporary home,” Don Johnson says. “The old structure, with its small, boxy rooms, was converted to an open floor plan, to fit Carl’s current lifestyle. The new portion is at a higher level than the golf course, to maximize the view,” Moore says. “I love the connected ceiling and smooth, deliberate transition — it moves seamlessly from a dynamic space overlooking the golf course to the intimate space of the kitchen.” The focal point of the home’s renovation, and one of its major challenges, was the eye-catching, custom fireplace in the great room. Explains Don Johnson: “The fireplace is gas, open flame, and linear — it was fabricated like a car or motorcycle, and took about 15 versions over three and a half months to get everything just right.” Another stunning feature of the great room is the wine wall, which became a functional yet artistic way to display the homeowner’s wine collection. According to Jake Johnson, smart house technology and an incredible sound system were also important to the homeowner. “Everything inside of the home is controlled by Siri — the lights, fireplaces, Sonos (sound system) — everything. The sound system speakers in the great room are painted the same color as the ceiling, and appear invisible. When music is playing, the sound basically rains down on you.” Other smart features in the home include the security and temperature control systems, a hidden TV in the master bedroom ceiling, and the bathtub and shower system, which allows the homeowner to start drawing a bath from his phone before he

Interior designer Anna Owen, of Anna Owen Interiors in Ann Arbor, notes: “The smart features weren’t challenging from a design perspective, but it was mindful design — something I had to have awareness of, especially in the spa-like bathrooms. (I had to really think about things like) the placement of switches, control panels, and the fact that, in the master bathroom, the tub fills from the ceiling.” When it came to the home’s interior design, Owen says she had to stay flexible and incorporate the homeowner’s own furniture selections. “Carl’s style is very modern. We had to transition the existing home into something clean, sleek, and modern, with some modern-rustic elements. The focus was on clean, simple design and a neutral palette with colorful pops from the artwork, to allow the artwork to speak for itself.” According to Owen, the lighting was key in making all the special features such as the flooring, wine wall, and wood elements stand out. “Wood tone is everywhere in the home, and it had to be right. All the wood elements came together so cohesively, which was the result of all the trades involved working together for a common goal,” she says. Creating a comfortable outdoor space with a modern vibe was also important to the homeowner for entertaining, relaxing, and, of course, taking in the view. “My house has exceeded my vision and is the perfect example of needing a team. It’s the most relaxing house I’ve ever been in. It’s a haven. The calm and welcoming nature of the house embraces you,” Calfin says. “The dream in my head has manifested into reality. I am humbled by it and full of gratitude.”

he original cottage that once stood overlooking the west arm of Walloon Lake near Petoskey was a “1970s type with very low ceilings and had probably been added on to through the years,” recalls interior designer Nicole Withers, of Jones-Keena & Co. in Birmingham. Perched high above the lake, the original structure’s views were remarkable. Maximizing those views and reorganizing the interior spaces to make them more open and take better advantage of the lot’s scenic setting were priorities for the redo that began in 2017. “Really comfortable and family friendly” were touch-points for the homeowners and described the end results they had in mind when they started the project. Team members included the homeowners, Withers, who had worked with them on a few other design projects, and builder Steve Steffes, of North Bay Construction in Petoskey. “We took it down to the studs,” Withers explains. “We redid the entire façade, changing it into a charming farmhouse.” Since the homeowners were starting over with the property, the team seized the opportunity to improve on the floor plan and the 3,800-square-foot home’s interior flow. “We definitely reorganized the space,” the designer explains, adding that in addition to moving some rooms, they decided to follow the roof structure and add beams to emphasize it. “We took the ceilings up to get interesting ceiling details. Doing so changed the whole feeling of the house,” she says.

HEIRLOOM TREASURE Painting the Past: Much of this Walloon Lake home may have been reimagined, but one important piece of the past remains. The previous owner started Lavender Hill Farms, a popular lavender farm in Boyne City. Local artist Kevin Barton created an original oil painting, not shown, of the farm and the surrounding rolling hills filled with trees, fields, and lavender, and she had the piece hanging in the entrance to the house. “When she was going to have an estate sale I asked if she was selling that,” the current homeowner explains. “She agreed to sell it to me. I had it reframed and now have it hanging in the entrance, as well. I like that it honors the home’s history.” — KZ

A working stone fireplace was added for what the homeowners call “that real Up North look.” Hues found in the stone inspired the colors used throughout the house, according to the designer. Reorganizing the interior enabled the team to rethink the existing space and take full advantage of the views. “We tried to make the spaces flow together,” Withers says. “The old kitchen was closed off, but the space is now open to the view of the lake. When you walk in from the front door you can see the lake; that was important to them.” Other priorities included creating a warm and welcoming getaway that accommodates the homeowners as well as their three boys and dogs. “It had to be family friendly, for sure,” Withers says, adding that the active boys often bring friends. “The house had to be able to sleep a crew,” she says. Because the family has all boys and a certain built-in masculinity, Withers made the guest rooms more feminine, ensuring a pleasing balance. “There’s a lot of male energy,” she jokes. She also added whimsical touches through her wallpaper, color, and accessories choices. Challenges included the lot, which has a steep hill and semi-rugged terrain that “makes it feel like both a journey and an adventure,” especially in winter, when four-wheel drives are definitely needed, Withers says. The four-bedroom, five-bath project took approximately a year to complete. Withers says she’s proud of the entire house, but admits to being partial to the black-and-green master bedroom, with its bold art. “It’s a very interesting space; it just feels good when you walk in there,” the designer reports. The homeowner agrees. “It feels like a happy room,” she says. The homeowner and the designer were pleased that things went according to plan. “I have no regrets,” Withers says. “I feel like we really made good choices. This is one of those projects where everything aligned.” The homeowner seconds that opinion, adding: “There’s nothing I would do differently. Nicole nailed it.” She says she relaxes the minute she walks in and sees the lake. “Everything slows down,” she says. “It’s just a cozy, easy place.”

or the past 10 years, Wanda Brown, CEO/director of interior design for Wanda Brown Interior Design in West Bloomfield, has been helping the McAdory family enhance their Rochester Hills home. “We’ve gone room by room,” Brown says about the ongoing remodel, which began with the lower level and continued with projects like the daughters’ bedrooms and Jack and Jill bathroom, now used as a guest suite. “They’re looking forward to having grandkids stay there someday,” Brown says. Another recent redo in the 4,600-square-foot house was the master bedroom, which reflects the couple’s passion for travel. “They wanted the space to feel like their oasis,” Brown says about her clients, Machelle and Randall McAdory. Machelle’s penchant for purple appears in the lavender tones that were incorporated in a soothing capacity, without making the space overly feminine. A convenient seating area joins a custom headboard and TV console in the master suite, which evolved as the couple’s lifestyle needs changed. “We wanted a space where we could spend a lot of time,” Machelle says. “We’re both big readers, and we can sit and read or watch TV.” Custom storage, like the tall cabinets that incorporate a window seat and hold handbags and shoes, was one of the suite’s practical updates. His-and-hers sinks on opposite walls create personal space in the master bathroom. “It looked like a little cave, and they also had a big jet tub, but they wanted a freestanding feel,” Brown says. The new shower and tub are surrounded by spa-like colors that complement the bedroom. A decorative paint finish contributes to the peaceful atmosphere. “Machelle likes simple, clean lines with nice details,” Brown continues. “Her style tends to be more transitional, but some elements of the home

are traditional, depending on the room. It’s a really nice family home.” The kitchen serves the family well, with an island that has comfortable bar stools and USB ports. “Machelle works from home and likes to work in the kitchen. She wanted it to be the hub of the house. Now she says it’s become the heart of their home,” Brown asserts. The couple has ample room to cook together and enjoys their meals at a table that can seat the whole family, which was important to them.

“Whenever their kids and their friends are there, everybody’s in that kitchen,” Brown says. Other updates include hardwood floors and a built-in TV that gets plenty of use. Another popular spot is the remodeled living room, which has been filled with comfortable seating and personal pieces. Of note is a wall of framed photographs that were taken by Randall McAdory. The works showcase famous buildings and monuments the couple has visited during their travels

around the world. “When they were stuck at home, they didn’t even mind,” Brown says. “It’s been a great experience working with the family, getting to know them, and helping them bring their vision to life. We started back in 2010 and we’ve completed a dozen rooms, but we’re not done yet.” The couple, who now has three grown children, has lived in the house since their oldest was still in elementary school. “We should have gotten

Wanda from the start,” Machelle says. “We did the lower level first because we wanted a kids’ room, where they could go with their friends. We always wanted to be the house everyone comes to and enjoys.” Soon after the lower level was completed, the home office and family room were updated. “We wanted a nice space for us to be able to gather, as well as our kids,” Machelle adds. “They got theirs, and then it just went on and on.” Brown understands the couple’s taste so well, she became a design consultant for their oldest daughter’s upcoming wedding. “She’s been instrumental in the look and feel and tone of the day,” Machelle says. “Wanda is brilliant at deciphering what you really want versus what you say. Our goal is to have livable space, not just a showplace. Everything has been designed with usefulness and family friendly rooms in mind. We love entertaining, and we always want to have a very welcoming vibe,” she says. “We’re very pleased with the way all the projects came out. The house is nice for everyone. We don’t feel like people are hesitant to get comfortable, and that’s important to me.”

HEIRLOOM TREASURES Gather ’Round: A dining room set, above, passed down to Randall McAdory from his mother, who inherited it from his grandmother, is well over 100 years old. “It has very sentimental value,” designer Wanda Brown says. Her challenge was to make the more ornate pieces — including a refractory pedestal table and five of the set’s original 12 chairs — suit the updated space. f you build a house on a lake, the focal point should be the water. That was the homeowners’ mandate when Bloomfield Hills architect Corey Campbell drew up the blueprints for this 5,300-square-foot (not including garages) Shingle-style home. Campbell’s firm, C-arc Design Group, specializes in lakefront homes, and he pulled this one off spectacularly. First, though, the dated 1975 house on the property in Orchard Lake Village had to be razed, and the site had to be reworked to meet the new-house design criteria, including a complete outdoor living area featuring an infinity pool, waterfalls, a fire feature, and more. The three-floor, five-bedroom/eight-bath home

is family friendly, with a lake view from every room and a special space for each member of the five-person household. Smart-home features with remote-everything make living easy, while speakers in every room are a treat for the ears. Outdoors, there’s even a custom beachfront with retaining walls and soft sand. C-arc also created the threeflight staircase, the cabinetry, and all the extensive custom millwork throughout the house. Designer Sandra Lousia, of SLS Designs Inc. in Bloomfield Hills, worked with Campbell and the homeowners from the three-year project’s onset. “There isn’t a detail that wasn’t thought through,” says Lousia, who also specializes in lakefront homes. “Everything flows together, with a con-

“That’s my favorite room,” says the wife, who’s also the mom of three. “I love drinking coffee in there, starting my day looking out at the serenity of the lake, and I love watching the sunsets at the end of the day.” The seating and furnishings in the home are all about comfort, Lousia says. “(It’s) comfort over anything,” she emphasizes. Her biggest challenge was finding pieces that didn’t obscure the lake; the result is low-slung seating from room to room, Lucite chairs in the breakfast nook, and a see-through desk in the dark-colored (Benjamin Moore’s Wrought Iron) study. Nothing hides the view. In the swanky lower level, cream and charcoal are punctuated with touches of brushed gold; a highlight is the 60-inch round ring chandelier in

the lounge area. Just across from the seating area is a magnificent bar with a wine cellar, and a second kitchen. The lower-level’s dining area features a custom live-edged table, a pool table, and an expanse of deep-brown wall covering with golden studs and stripes by Phillip Jeffries called “Nailed It.” A nearby bath with a dressing area and towel cubbies is the next stop before jumping in the pool — or the lake. Outside, the patio and pool area is just as grand, with a daybed in front of the window and loads of other cushy spots to take in the sun, including an artistic circular sculpture that’s actually more seating. Another kitchen and a fire pit ensure every inch of outdoor living is a dream.

The large painting, from Leftbank Art, was perfect for that space.” Meanwhile, the table’s side chairs, covered in a soft green velvet, pick up on the green in the painting. “I like the fun geometric pattern in the host and hostess chairs, too,” Daka says. Light, airy drapery in a Holly Hunt fabric lets the room breathe. The dining room’s light mauve shows up again in the master bedroom sitting area, which features a balcony that overlooks the backyard. Leftbank Art and swivel chairs that are “very comfy,” Daka says, due in part to their velvety fabric, add to that area’s appeal. A velvet Phillip Jeffries wallcovering in Peacock complements the room’s cocoa tones. The adjoining bath’s chic tub was a must, Daka says, and glass tile in the shower creates a “super simple, sleek, and clean look. They wanted the master suite to feel like a boutique hotel.” Like the master bedroom, a son’s bedroom, with dimensional wall art made of wood (from the Z Gallerie) has a balcony overlooking the backyard. As for the son’s bathroom, it features cement flooring with a unique geometric pattern. “He’s in his early 20s and my goal was to create something a little more masculine,” Daka says. Marble, waterfall-style countertops from Ciot, and cabinetry painted in Benjamin Moore’s Forest Green give a sense of unity to the look. Leather pulls with brass screws on the cabinetry add more masculinity. A daughter’s room showcases the inhabitant’s

Chanel suit with sneakers” is how Boca Raton, Fla.-based designer Jamie Herzlinger describes the house she recently designed for Dr. Nicole Teifer of Today’s Orthodontics; her husband, Steve Milot; and their two West Highland terriers, Lily and Spike. The couple had been living in a larger house in Plymouth Township and thinking about renovating when they fell in love with the four-bedroom Birmingham house built in 1989. “We actually weren’t even looking,” Teifer explains, adding that she and her husband had been researching renovation ideas online when they came across their current house on Zillow. That chance encounter led them to start thinking about moving rather than renovating, she says. They toured the home with realtor Lora Kazanjian. “We liked that the work had already been done and all we had to do was decorate,” Teifer explains. That’s where Herzlinger came in. The designer had worked with the couple on a former vacation home in Arizona and understood their taste, which she describes as fashion-forward. “Nicole likes gorgeous, upscale, modern, and classic,” Herzlinger explains. “She’s glamorous and wanted a

glamorous interior.” Teifer was equally complimentary about the designer’s work and her vision for the project. “Jamie does a lot of unique things, things that make a statement,” she says. “We’ve always liked that. We also like that she chooses interesting pieces that don’t always fit into one style.” After the couple bought the house in 2020, Herzlinger “jumped right in,” she says. While she works all over the world, the designer had never been to Birmingham before the home’s installation. She was impressed by the house and the neighborhood’s many attributes, including its cen-

tral location. “It’s on a beautiful tree-lined street near a park,” she says. “It’s stunning, within walking distance of everything.” Even though the house represented the best of Birmingham, the designer wanted the interiors to incorporate influences from around the country. “I wanted to highlight the best artisans of today who are working in places like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Florida,” she says. She also wanted to tweak tradition throughout the home, she says, interpreting and updating classic style in a modern way. Examples include the living room’s Chesterfield sofa, done in black

suede; the dining room table, which has a classic marble slab on a contemporary gold square base; and velvet chairs that feature an unexpectedly modern shape. “How to make old new was a major part of the philosophy and drove the project,” the designer says. “We kept asking ourselves, ‘How do we make classic fun?’ That question, and the results, drove the entire project.” Herzlinger helped the couple with the breakfast room, entry, living room, and master bedroom, working with them when it came to choosing paint, wallpaper, chandeliers, and “all the good stuff,” she says. After living in a “kind of dark” former home, the couple was looking to lighten up. “We really wanted something light and bright,” Teifer explains. She likes that many of the pieces look like jewelry, including lighting, fixtures, and draperies. Favorite furnishings include the dining room

table, with its chunky contemporary base — something Teifer says is “so unique, very blingy, and different with great texture. I just love it.” She also loves the master bedroom, especially “the wallpaper and the feel of the leather on the bed,” she raves, adding, “it’s so soft, it feels like butter.” The project took about eight months to complete, Teifer says. Herzlinger worked remotely during the pandemic, which added its own set of challenges, but none proved unsurmountable, according to the designer, who says she’s used to working long-distance. Teifer says aesthetics were important, but so was comfort. “We wanted the house to be glamorous and beautiful, but also livable. We love to spend time here with the dogs and just chill out.” She admits to only one regret: “I’m sad that it’s over,” she says. “I’d like to start again, but I would still want the same stuff. There’s not one thing in this house I don’t love 100 percent.”
