INSPIRED DESIGN
Irecently went on a tour of the Little Village, a new cultural arts center on Detroit’s east side (our writer, Khristi Zimmeth, takes us on an in-depth look on page 46) that encompasses not only the Shepherd (once a church and now a beautifully renovated home for art galleries, a library, performance space, and more) but also an inn, a skatepark, and a sculptural garden with works by the late and iconic artist Charles McGee. Other projects currently in development include a new patisserie from James Beard award-winner Warda Bouguettaya (we hear she may offer ice cream at this new location!) and the Lantern, a completely overhauled former bakery that houses the Progressive Art Studio Collective (a gallery and studio space for artists with developmental disabilities and/or mental health differences), Signal Return (a nonprofit letterpress workshop), and the soon-to-open new home of Coup D’état (a fashion boutique). This entire new arts and design-focused campus is the result of the vision of Library Street Collective owners Anthony and JJ Curis, and the team of architects, designers, and landscape artists they brought in to help accomplish their dream.
I was in awe not only of the transformation of the former church, but of everything that’s shaping up in the neighborhood. Even former Detroit Lions defensive end Romeo Okwara, an avid photographer, is working on a project nearby, transforming a once-abandoned building into a photo residency space with a dark room, listening room, and gallery space. The I.M. Weiss Gallery has also moved into the block, with owner Isabelle Weiss now showcasing her thoughtful furniture-based exhibitions in her home as a new series titled La Sala.
What inspired me most of all, however, was the knowledge that great design is at the core of each one of these revolutionary renovations. The transformative power of architecture and art is on full display throughout the Little Village. And this power of design, with its ability to bring such positive change to the community, continues to inspire me each day.
Great design has the capacity not only to make a beneficial impact, but to encourage others to want to push through — and break — boundaries. Just take a look at what Ishtiaq Rafiuddin of Undecorated and Philip Kafka of Prince Concepts were able to do for Chef Javier Bardauil’s new restaurant, Puma, in Detroit’s Core City neighborhood (page 42). Once a service garage and car wash, the restaurant is now a shining example of adaptive reuse. This kind of ingenuity is also what has pushed furniture designer Evan Fay to create his extraordinary Lawless series (page 44); it’s what fueled the innovation at Zaha Hadid Design, whose inventive creations for the home are on view at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University (page 36); and it’s what drives each of the visionary talents we feature in this issue.
Great design is exactly why we host our annual Detroit Design Awards. We love to highlight and showcase the designers, builders, and craftspeople who continue to blaze trails and inspire us with their extraordinary work. It’s an honor to see our winners commended here for their incredible efforts. Bravo to each and every one of you! We can’t wait to see what design innovations next year brings.

Cranbrook Art Museum
A Modernist Regime: Cuban Mid-Century Design
From July 11 through Sept. 22, Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills presents A Modernist Regime: Cuban Mid-Century Design. The headlining exhibition examines the furniture created during the design movement that took place on the island during the 1960s and 1970s. In a press release, Cranbrook Art Museum Director Andrew Satake Blauvelt says:
“Since Cranbrook is known around the world as an incubator of mid-century design, we are drawn to narratives of similar developments elsewhere, in this case, from the Global South. Just as designers in the U.S. interpreted the tenets of modern design, so did Cubans, although in a completely different economic, social, and cultural context.”
Accompanying the show will be a two-part presentation entitled A Modernist Regime: The Cuban Contemporary Lens (runs through Sept. 1).
The exhibitions — Marco Castillo: The Hands of the Collector, which will showcase several works by the artist, and Cuba Dispersa — highlight the responses of contemporary Cuban artists, none of whom currently live in the country, on the loss of creative freedoms and the government’s campaign to suppress and control the island’s artistic community.

Seeing in 360 Degrees: The Zaha Hadid Design Collection
Running through August 2026, the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University is featuring the works of the late and iconic architect and designer Zaha Hadid and her namesake studio, Zaha Hadid Design, in its latest exhibition, Seeing in 360 Degrees.
Innovative and experimental, Hadid’s beloved creations often challenged the conventional. After launching her groundbreaking architectural practice, Zaha Hadid Architects, in the late 1970s, she went on to introduce Zaha Hadid Design in 2006 — a studio that employed her imaginative design philosophies to furniture, home goods, clothing, and accessories. Hadid became known for reimagining these day-to-day objects and, as a result, she created extraordinary works of art, which today are the subject of the exhibition.
“I’m thrilled that the Zaha Hadid Design collection is available to our many audiences at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University,” says Rachel Winter, assistant curator at the MSU Broad Art Museum. “Zaha Hadid’s work demonstrates the power of research, as well as some of the most cutting-edge and innovative design work thus far. I hope this collection inspires visitors of all ages to think more about design in our daily life.”

Two skillfully remodeled rooms in a 1920s Tudor effortlessly reflect past and present

Liz Marchant Ourston, the owner of Liz Marchant Interiors in Austin, Texas, who lived in West Bloomfield as a teen, recently took on one of her first Michigan projects since moving to Texas from California in 2019. The home, a 1920s Tudor Revival in Bloomfield Hills, had undergone a massive renovation that doubled its original 3,000-square-foot size while seamlessly preserving its character and integrity. Ourston, who had assisted on the original expansion of the home with Denise Morrison Interiors, was brought back in by the homeowner (a high school friend of the designer) in 2022 to renovate two of the home’s original rooms — a multipurpose office and a dining room.
space where the husband could play his beloved piano for the kids. They also wanted to be able to have a couple of guests over for a glass of whiskey and to watch a football game, or have a cocktail by the fire. Basically, Ourston says, the couple wanted “an intimate entertaining space, piano room, home office, and homework area” all rolled into one.
Built-ins that lend a luxurious library feel include a corner desk and a bench at the homework table, while swivel chairs can face the baby grand piano or the fireplace. “We were able to accomplish their goals with an efficient layout that still fits four swivel lounge chairs, so you can pivot for all the activities,” the designer notes.
Original wood floors and textured walls surround the exquisite millwork from WeissWorks by Nightingale in Holly. Unique elements include the corner desk, which is topped with quartzite. “We wanted it to feel sophisticated but fun,” Ourston says.
The designer took the same approach in the dining room. “We wanted to make it feel like we made the office feel,” she explains. “We captured the (feel of the) original architecture, but also brought in modern elements.”
TRADITIONAL CHARM
Below: Transitional-style beams were chosen to create the dining room’s playful plaid ceiling — a detail that pays homage to the home’s original 1920s Tudor Revival aesthetic.
The office, which in addition to functioning as a workspace, had to accommodate a place for entertaining, reading, homework, and pianoplaying. “There were a lot of things we wanted to accomplish,” Ourston says about the space.
Even though the home is fairly sizable, the family’s needs included an office as well as a
Avid entertainers, the homeowners spend a good deal of time in the dining room, which features an intricate ceiling. “I like to do research when working on a historic home, and I came across this inspiration picture that had a grid ceiling with different widths and depths, creating a plaid effect,” Ourston says. Chairs that sport a diamond pattern surround the custom table while a modern Visual Comfort chandelier hangs above.
Another nod to the home’s 1920s Tudor architecture: higher wall paneling, embellished with an art ledge. Although it’s a bit chunky and thick, the designer says, it’s still elegant. “They’re not dainty little details,” she notes.
Ourston took her cues from the rooms that were original to the house. “The addition has a transitional style, but the home had that original texture on the walls and original molding that helped me to appreciate the craftsmanship and details from that time period and style,” she explains. “It has so much character and detail, but it isn’t too fancy. It’s sophisticated but casual, and I really like that aspect of it.”

This sparkling solarium in Detroit’s University District shines with historic charm and a modern sensibility

SUZY POLING OF LIGHTARC STUDIO; COURTESY OF END STUDIO
In 2014, Brandon and Miranda Suman moved from Cincinnati to Detroit. Just two years later, in what Miranda calls “a moment of serendipity,” they purchased a home in the city’s University District from her former professor. At the time, the residence was unlivable and in desperate need of repair, so the couple spent the majority of 2017 renovating the 1927-built Tudor with the help of Detroit-based contractor Maxwell Construction, all while documenting the journey on their digital diary, between6and7.com.
In 2020, the Sumans reconnected with Calvin Garfield, owner of Maxwell Construction, to assist them with their vision of optimizing and overhauling their generous double lot. Garfield connected the couple to Elise DeChard, owner and principal architect of END studio, a Detroit-based, all-womenoperated architecture and interior practice, to design the yard’s overhaul. DeChard was tasked with transforming the garage (the space had a small footprint, but with the homeowners’ passion for historic cars, a larger area with more function was desired) and adding a mudroom complete with Amish-built cabinets. Outdoor spaces were also revitalized with features such as a gorgeous new pergola and an ipe fence (both built by Maxwell Construction), a fire pit, a relocated driveway, and a patio and landscaping by Detroit-based B&D Garden Design.
The home also had an old aluminum sunroom “that aesthetically reminded us of a 1990s Wendy’s restaurant,” Miranda says. “It was collapsing, prone to leaking, and uninsulated, making it difficult to enjoy year-round.” END Studio designed a new solarium that honored the home’s historical legacy while still feeling new.
“The homeowners really love entertaining, throwing parties, and inviting people into their home, so they wanted to make the solarium and the garage a showcase,” DeChard says. On the solarium’s must-have list was a space for both dining and lounging, as well as a windowsill where the couple could display plants and décor, and their cat, Aja, could nap and sunbathe.
“They wanted something that really spoke to the elegance of the existing house,” DeChard says. “The home is beautiful, with a fireplace, vaulted ceilings, and lots of Tudor details. Trying to match that in this room was really important.”
To achieve that authentic yet contemporary look, DeChard says END Studio sought to “bring in as many elements as possible that hearken back to the 1920s.” The moldings, trim, and panels were key, as were the paned windows that Marvin Windows created to emulate the look of historic leaded glass. Vintage steam-heat radiators were also installed, and for modern comfort, AC and a hidden motorized smart shade system were added, as well.
A black-and-white checkerboard tile floor “defines the space and really gives it that character,” DeChard notes. The addition of a beadboard ceiling delivers additional texture while remaining true to the home’s age.
The biggest adventure, DeChard says, was the paint. “Getting that right was a many-month challenge with some very skilled painters,” she says. “It was very much a trial-and-error process to figure out how to get that perfect sheen.” In the end, Greenblack by Sherwin-Williams was chosen for the space.
An 8-foot square pyramidal skylight “makes you feel like you’re completely outside,” DeChard adds, noting that it also provides the room with a kaleidoscopic effect, thanks to the paint’s mirror finish.
“END ensured the plan met all our needs for the space, maximized the overall use of our property, and kept the historic 1920s aesthetic,” Miranda says. “What we love most about the space is how it blends the best of the 1920s with the 2020s.”
On Sept. 14, the Sumans will be sharing their home on the annual University District Community Association’s Home & Garden Tour.

Going from an abandoned service garage to an edgy eatery, Puma performs in Core City
TEXT BY CHRISTINE HILDEBRAND
Javier Bardauil is an entertainer at heart. “I love to perform,” says the native of Buenos Aires, who is also the chef and owner of Barda, a James Beard Award finalist for best new restaurant. His latest performance, however, is set to take place at his soon-toopen choripanería, Puma — a casual restaurant in Detroit’s Core City neighborhood that serves South American street food in a space that’s reflective of Bardauil’s visionary spirit.
Conceptualized by Bardauil, designed by architect Ishtiaq Rafiuddin of the Detroit-based architectural design studio Undecorated, and managed by real estate developer and owner of the Core City property management company Prince Concepts, Philip Kafka, Puma is a highly collaborative project.
When Prince Concepts purchased the 5,000-square-foot abandoned building in 2015, it was used for storage. But Kafka had an idea to reactivate the structure, subdividing it into three commercial spaces. “We knew Puma would be one of the tenants, so we designed the space for them,” Rafiuddin says. The other tenants are Matéria Gallery and EDITION, a pop-up retail establishment presenting contemporary art.
Stationed at the corner of 16th Street and West Hancock Street, the restaurant is outfitted with sliding windows and doors that help bring the outside in. A walk-up window offers guests the chance to dine alfresco on its newly added parklet or even across the street at Core City Park. “The surrounding landscape serves as a doorstep and invites the community in. The decisions we made all reflect the bigger idea of connecting Puma to the exterior environment,” Rafiuddin explains.
Previously a service garage and car wash, the block-style building Puma occupies is ubiquitous around Detroit. “There used to be a service garage like this on almost every block,” Rafiuddin says.
Wanting to celebrate the structure’s existing conditions while honoring its past, the trio chose to leave much of the original building intact. There’s a great deal of sameness in new construction. In contrast, Puma is authentic and sustainable. “The building has a history of living out many lives, so we wanted to embrace the incoherency of the space,” Rafiuddin says.
Kafka adds, “Simone DeSousa, who runs Matéria, is from Brazil and Javier is from Argentina, so we wanted to take inspiration from Latin America, where brick is often used, and showcase the 100-plus-year-old brickwork on this building.”
The interior walls were repaired, left bare, and painted in an all-black palette. “It’s simple, elegant, and a nice contrast to the highly textured building materials,” Rafiuddin says. To add to the interior’s aesthetic, oversized speakers sport a highlight of the signature neon hue seen on the exterior. Late at night, when Puma’s kitchen closes, the bar transforms into Cougar. “I wanted a space that’s flexible and fluid,” Bardauil notes. Adding to the electric energy is a sound system designed by Detroitbased BING Audio and art by Detroit-based lighting artist Patrick Ethan.
On the exterior, updates include large-format aluminum windows that sport a fluorescent reddish-orange, oven-baked paint — a process that helps preserve the color. “It’s a symbol of life returning to the once-abandoned building,” Rafiuddin says. He adds that it also represents the fire used to cook choripán, Puma’s signature dish — a simple sandwich consisting of sausage (chorizo) and bread (pan).
Rafiuddin’s goal was to deliver something that made sense within both the space and the larger concept. Bardauil made three fundamental design requests: a charcoal grill to cook choripán, a ceviche bar, and a beverage bar. Each request resulted in a unique spatial element. Depending on where guests sit within the restaurant, they can watch their meal come to life. “It’s a form of performance that creates choreography with a sense of place, purpose, and identity,” Rafiuddin says.
Decisions surrounding Puma’s spatial design are layered. “For instance, if we made an opening to add natural light, it was also designed for service purposes, and to create a view. Any opportunity to give the space more ability, we needed to take it.”
For Rafiuddin, architecture is the entire experience.“Everything works in concert.”
Destiny may have chosen Core City as Bardauil’s new home, but with the help of Rafiuddin, Kafka, and the local community, the chef’s dream performance is becoming reality.

Meet Evan Fay, a Detroit-based furniture designer who blends the lines between form and function
TEXT BY CHRISTINE HILDEBRAND
Detroit-based furniture designer Evan Fay grew up in the Traverse City area and comes from a family of seasoned maple syrup-makers who have been sugaring for generations. “For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been actively making with my hands,” he says. “There have been moments and people along the way that shed light on opportunities that led me to furniture.”
In particular, he points to his grandfather, Larry Coe, who encouraged him to consider a career at the ripe age of 5. Fay shares that the path he chose hinges on memories of building birdhouses with his grandfather; their creative process started with a sketch and resulted in a threedimensional object fit for feathered occupants.
seat with a visually striking form.” He literally ties the knot between form and function, using his body as a human loom. The process guarantees the authenticity of each piece, as no two works are the same.
FUNCTIONAL ART
Given their modular nature, these Grid Vessels encourage botanical artistry and endless configurations.
Thanks to the seeds his grandfather sowed, Fay wove design, construction, and architecture into a fruitful profession, and received a BFA in furniture design from Kendall College of Art and Design and an MFA in 3-D Design from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. As a secondyear graduate student at Cranbrook, Fay worked under Dutch design studio Kiki & Joost. During his apprenticeship, a light switched on. “I finally took ownership over my work and ruled out all agonized designs,” he says. From there, Fay says he entered a new era and his breakout series, Lawless, was born.
As the name implies, the Lawless Series repels rules; the work is shaped by intuition. Fay randomly weaves “the supportive cushion to be both useful and expressive, formally and conceptually balancing a comfortable
Fay implements unconventional approaches to padding, upholstery, and joining across his work. His signature techniques consist of handfinishing, sewing, and brass-brazing — a metal joining process often used in building bikes. “Everything is fabricated in the studio and done mostly by hand,” he says. “I prefer analogue methods over digital, and archaic over modern technologies.”
In addition to sculpting furniture, Fay creates soft seating and interior objects. He says the Grid Vessels are his favorite, given the element of interaction they contain. “I’m intentionally making loud and expressive statement pieces for the interior. These pieces have the ability to operate as functional art in a space and are understood and utilized in that way.”
Fay’s bold designs attract attention from art collectors and critics, as well as celebrities such

as Cardi B, who commissioned a custom sofa. In the future, Fay hopes to produce a larger volume of work and bigger pieces. “Over the next months, I’ll be preparing two large sofas that will be exhibited with Mauricio Kirschner during Paris Design Week,” which takes place in the fall. “I’m also getting ready for my first solo show with Galerie Philia, which will take place in September” to coincide with the annual Detroit Month of Design.
In August 2023, Fay, with his partner, ceramicist Hayden Allison Richér, purchased an historic building in Detroit’s Morningside neighborhood to house his long-awaited, full-time studio. It took eight years to build a practice that supports Fay — an accomplishment the designer says he’s most proud of.
“Detroit lends itself to how I want to freely work and live in an environment,” explains the designer, who adds that it was less about “Why Detroit?” and more “Why not Detroit?” Fay and Richér envision creating a space for themselves, their neighbors, and community. “We want to build an environment that’s like a creative sanctuary,” Fay says.

The couple behind Detroit’s Library Street Collective are beginning their second chapter at a former Catholic church on the city’s east side
TEXT BY KHRISTI ZIMMETH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JASON KEEN; COURTESY OF LIBRARY STREET COLLECTIVE
Anthony and JJ Curis, owners and co-founders of Detroit’s Library Street Collective, weren’t looking for a church when they began thinking about expanding.
the 16,000-square-foot brick structure was built in 1911 in the Romanesque Revival style but had been empty since 2016.
CULTURAL CAMPUS
The Little Village includes galleries, an inn, eateries, a skatepark, a sculpture garden, and more.
“We thought long and hard about what should be our next chapter,” Anthony Curis explains. He says they considered other locations, including New York and Puerto Rico, before ultimately deciding to renew their commitment to Detroit and “double down in the city.”
In 2019, the couple started exploring a number of sites before they were tipped off about a former Catholic church for sale on Detroit’s east side. Originally known as Annunciation, and later as Good Shepherd,
Once inside, they found soaring arches, stained glass, and Pewabic tile from the landmark pottery.
“We were looking for a certain scale and historical significance,” Curis shares. The vast church offered both, as well as plenty of room in which to spread out. “We knew we needed something with space not only for galleries, but for collaborative performances and music,” he says.
SOARING SIGHTLINES
A new mezzanine offers a bird’s-eye
The plan was to develop a new cultural campus known as Little Village and center it around art, architecture, the landscape, and waterfront access, Curis says. Blurring the lines between gallery, institution, and community arts center, the site would be anchored by the former church, renamed the “Shepherd,” with two gallery spaces, a library dedicated to artists of color, a community workshop area, and multifaceted programming. Also included would be an outdoor sculpture garden, the Charles McGee Legacy Park; a Tony Hawk and McArthur Binion-designed public skatepark; two eateries; a bar (aptly entitled Father Forgive Me); and ALEO, a boutique bed-and-breakfast housed in the adjacent former rectory.
Curis knew the vacant church was right the first time he toured it, he says. “There was an aura,” he remembers, adding, “it’s hard to explain; it gave us this feeling that it was special, and we immediately knew this was where we wanted to be.”
INSIDE OUT
When the couple purchased it, the building was a long way from the soaring, whitewashed space visitors see today. “The condition wasn’t great,” Curis acknowledges. “It had a grand beauty but had fallen into disrepair.” The roof was damaged, the original flooring had been covered, and all of the infrastructure had to be upgraded. Old photos, however, confirmed its possibilities. “When it was first built, it was very much like you see now,” Curis says.
Returning the building and its environs to its original architectural intent as a community gathering space — albeit with a different
GATHERING SPACE
function — was the goal. To help, the new owners brought in Miriam Peterson and Nathan Rich, of Brooklyn-based architects Peterson Rich Office (PRO), who had experience in both historic buildings and adaptive reuse.
“It wasn’t hard to see the potential from the beginning,” Rich says of the project. Removing the furnishings and questionable later additions only confirmed that assessment. “Taking things out made it easy to see both the raw potential and the amazing natural light.”
Two galleries were carved from the onetime church floor, with an unusual mezzanine — Curis’ favorite feature, he says — offering a bird’s-eye view of the soaring space. Fittingly, the opening exhibition (on view through July 20) is a retrospective of the work of Charles McGee, who designed the nearby outdoor sculpture park’s three largescale works prior to his 2021 passing. Former confessionals now offer reading nooks for the Little Village Library, curated by Asmaa Walton, which is located on one side of the church.
STAY AWHILE
ALEO (short for Angel, Lion, Eagle and Ox, images originally depicted on a mural in the church) is housed in the 5,500-square-foot rectory. With interiors by Holly Jonsson Studio, of Detroit-based Rossetti, the renovated bed-and-breakfast includes a first floor with communal areas
Above: Work by artist Jason REVOK adds eye-catching color to a living area in ALEO, where Mid-century accents blend seamlessly with historic details.
for events and programming, and a second floor with four guest suites. The third floor houses the headquarters of the Modern Ancient Brown Foundation, which offers two artists residencies, one out of ALEO.
“JJ and Anthony were some of the first people I met when I moved to Detroit from Dallas 10 years ago,” designer Jonsson says of her involvement. “I knew that anything they were working on would be amazing, and I was very excited to play a small part in their vision and this incredible arts development.”
Like the church, the rectory “was in pretty rough shape,” Jonsson says. She followed the lead of the rest of the project team when working on interiors. “I knew the art should be the focus of the space,” she explains. “I wanted to keep the palette timeless so the art, rotated in and out, (and) the furnishings wouldn’t compete.”
Art by Detroit-based artists or those with roots in the city is drawn from the Curises’ enviable collection. “I wanted the furniture to
augment the art, and for the spaces at ALEO to be cozy and comfortable for guests to relax, work, connect and collaborate,” Jonsson explains of her clean-lined, often Mid-century Modern, aesthetic. “A lot of the furniture and accessories were sourced at local estate sales. I also source a lot from IME and Le Shoppe. There are classic pieces by Saarinen and Eames, and chairs recovered in Nick Cave’s fabric, which was a collaboration between Cave and Knoll (Textiles).”
IT TAKES A VILLAGE
After almost five years of planning and restoration, Little Village officially opened on May 18. The team and their community partners are excited about both the project’s completion and its potential as an arts-focused gathering spot.
New York landscape designer Simon David, of OSD, was “really moved by the energy” of the project and says the landscape design — including red twig dogwood inspired by the church’s original brick — ties the disparate pieces together. “The need for public space is so important for community connections and our own physical and mental well-being,” he says.
The architects agree. “The church and surrounding land represented a great opportunity to give Anthony and JJ the space to do what they do best,” Peterson says. “They took an incredible leap of faith.”
“I like to think of the Shepherd as serving both global and local audiences,” Rich adds. “On the one hand, Anthony and JJ are staging world-class exhibitions for international audiences. On the other, the Shepherd has grown out of collaborations with local partners and will be a new anchoring institution in the neighborhood, echoing the role the church once played as a space for community-gathering.”
Rich continues to be inspired by the project and its scope. “Every time I walk in, I’m almost surprised by it,” he says. “There’s really nothing like this out there.”

The Great Outdoors
Local landscaping experts showcase the splendor of living harmoniously with nature
TEXT BY MEGAN SWOYER
Gorgeous landscaping is a welcome mat to the great outdoors, especially when it’s designed with natural materials, stunning pools, and inviting flora, and makes the most of excellent sightlines. Here, two local landscaping design professionals provide the lowdown on extra-memorable projects.
CHOICE SETTING ON CHALMERS LAKE
a busy family with kids who are swimmers,” Zaremba says, “so the pool (65 feet by 16 feet) is designed for flip-turns and it’s long enough that they can get in some great practices.”
The existing landscape was sloped (14 feet of grade transition) and featured unstable soil, so 49 helical piers (steel rods that extend down to stable soil, in this case about 35 to 40 feet down) were installed to support the pool, explains Zaremba, who’s been in the profession for more than 35 years.
As for the aesthetics, Zaremba says there are transitional layers that flow from the home to the lake. A variety of natural materials, including stone (behind the fire feature) and cedar, adorn the landscaping.

“Based on everything that was going on, from COVID to poor soil conditions, I wasn’t sure the clients were going to go through with it,” Patrick Zaremba recalls of an unforgettable landscaping and pool design.
Those challenges didn’t stop the owner of Pontiac-based Zaremba & Company and his team of experts, along with some savvy engineers. The results? Pure quality, creativity, beauty, and a relaxing way to enjoy the great outdoors.
The clients, who live on quiet Chalmers Lake in Bloomfield Township, were open to a unique plan that included installing a helical system to support an in-ground pool. “They’re
“The wood-clad walls echo the architectural components of the home. It’s a floating retaining wall system and doesn’t require footing, saving thousands of dollars,” he says. Broom-finished concrete decking (“practical, economical, seamless, and clean”) that cantilevers over the pool also was installed.
Beautiful low-maintenance grasses such as Miscanthus sinensis Adagio (also known as dwarf maiden grass) and hydrangea bushes were brought in, and three ginkgo trees that were already on the property were transplanted. A head-turning gas fire table adds a different type of beauty. “It’s simple and practical, and doesn’t detract from the aesthetics,” Zaremba says. The homeowners chose a glass pool enclosure so they can see straight out to tranquil Chalmers Lake. “The whole look transitions effortlessly to the lake,” Zaremba says. “Nothing is complicated, which is a beautiful design attribute.”
EFFORTLESS TRANSITION
Previous page: Challenges ranging from a sloped terrain to poor soil conditions didn’t stop Pontiac-based Zaremba & Company from creating a stunning outdoor setting for the owners of this Chalmers Lake home. Natural materials like stone and cedar, as well low-maintenance landscaping, connect the home to the lake beyond.
RAVINE REVERIE
Matt Mosher of Royal Oak-based Mosher Design Co. enjoyed a recent project that also involved a sloped property and the installation of a pool. He was recommended by the homeowners’ architect, Bloomfield Hillsbased AZD Associates.
“The clients, who live in Toledo, Ohio, wanted the landscaping to be completely unique and never before seen in their area,” Mosher says. “Our question was, how do we take this property, surrounded by nature, with a beautiful modern house on it, and blend it into a softness so that hardlines slowly dissipate as you transition to a pool and ravine in the backyard?”
The wife had shown Mosher the gardens in her previous home, to give him an idea of her taste. “It was English and not modern, but I knew we could use the colors she liked and create a softness to complement the modern architecture,” says the landscaping pro, who lives in Clarkston and started his business when he was 17 years old.
The plan included bringing in mature evergreen trees from Michigan. “They were all at least 20 feet tall; it’s the quickest way to provide immediate impact,” Mosher says. They also planted breathtaking purple-pink
millennium onion (a deer-proof cousin to allium); Elijah Blue fescue; horsetail bamboo, which flanks the house and provides a “nice, vertical look”; thyme groundcover; ginkgo trees; and a Bloodgood Japanese maple.
Mosher custom-designed the fire feature so that when the couple looks out a large window overlooking the pool, they see a fire-band that extends the length of the pool, which sits on a large upper terrace. Its wall extends 12 feet, and a cable-rail fence system provides a modern look that echoes the home’s style. Poured concrete walls with a custom-textured finish add more beauty.
“The homeowners are ecstatic,” Mosher says — and so is he. “The most rewarding and visually amazing projects are the ones where the client puts their full trust in the team,” he says.

TRADITIONAL LIVING ROOM/GREAT ROOM
Brightening up the sunken living room in a 1917 Colonial began by painting the millwork, trim, and wood floors all the same warm white. The fireplace provided natural inspiration for the palette, which incorporates both warm and cool tones. A marriage of new custom upholstery and antique books, art, and accessories signals the sophisticated comfort the family was seeking.

The goal of updating this architectural masterpiece was to refresh the interior while highlighting the original features. The living room incorporates updated modern elements that work with the rich details. Adding wood created warmth without taking away from the design’s openness and clean lines. Brazilian furniture was a delightful addition. Every aspect was strategically planned, elevating this already amazing home into a timeless work of art.

TRADITIONAL INTERIOR DESIGN (More than One Room)
When this 1912 bungalow was purchased by its current owners, the structure had seen its share of shoddy home repairs. Working room-by-room over several years, the interior was transformed. While staying true to the Arts and Crafts architecture inherent to the home, it was decided that a heavy influence of classic English country house would add to the aesthetic. Timeless backgrounds including glazed porcelain tile, bluestone flooring, natural slab marble, and stained oak paneling are recurring themes.

This cozy space gets a moody treatment thanks to a dusty blue metallic ball peen-hammered wallpaper and a honed black granite fireplace surround. A built-in bookcase in a cinnamon-blonde wood with a gray wash houses the client’s collection of curiosities, while all of the upholstery is custom to fit the space precisely. A library table, placed perfectly in the window, is an ideal spot for gazing at the majestic views of the lake beyond.

The challenge was to create a well-edited, highly functional, and streamlined workspace that didn’t feel overly cluttered and tight. The office needed to hold samples, books, electronics, and more — and, at the same time, have an ample amount of surface space for laying out materials. In addition, it needed to feel warm and personal. The designer used California Closets to help with the custom built-ins that were essential to the room’s success.

The pantry in this remodel offered a unique place for displaying the homeowner’s extensive collection of vintage silver, china, and copper. A deep green on the shelves provides a dramatic contrast with the metal finishes of the serving pieces, while a custom barn door can remain open, allowing the collection to be viewed from the kitchen island. This pantry gives a fresh perspective on how to showcase the beauty of timeworn pieces.

The goal in shaping this space was to cultivate an ambience of elegance and airy spaciousness. The interplay of pastel tones, luxurious textures, and mirrored surfaces achieves this harmoniously. Modern marvels and traditional beauties take center stage
CRANBROOK CUSTOM HOMES
This remarkable home — by Cranbrook Custom Homes — not only overlooks the Rouge River, but won first place in the New Model Home category.
HISTORIC RENOVATION/RESTORATION (50 Years or Older)
Nestled against the Rouge River, this 1920s residence underwent updates over the years that resulted in an awkward layout. By combining the laundry and mudroom, the designers were able to enlarge the kitchen. Then, to embrace the original character and history of the home while ensuring a functional family space, the designer added open shelving, chunky island legs, and vintage wood tones, and kept the original milk door.
SMALL-SPACE REMODEL (Up to 1,000 sq. ft.)
Prior to undergoing a renovation, this lower-level space had a 1980s feel. By replacing the full kitchen with an updated kitchenette and reconfiguring a few key walls, the space was successfully transformed into a family-friendly spot that’s both stylish and comfortable.
LARGE REMODEL (More than 1,000 sq. ft.)
The renovation of this David Osler-designed residence in Ann Arbor aimed to uncover its Mid-century Modern bones while fashioning a comfortable home. Wide-plank white oak floors and clean white walls are the perfect backdrop for both the residents’ art collection and the surrounding greenery that’s visible from the home’s floorto-ceiling windows. This elevated residence is proof that the smallest details pack the biggest punch.

MAINSTREET DESIGN BUILD
This spacious one-acre Bloomfield Hills residence offered room for an expansion that includes a luxurious firstfloor primary suite, an open kitchen, expanded family and dining rooms, and captivating outdoor areas. The 2007 French country home’s intricate details, such as glazed brick designs and handcrafted corbels, were meticulously preserved to maintain its distinct charm during the seamless integration of the new spaces.
HELLER & ASSOCIATES KEVIN HART AND ASSOCIATES with KEMLER BUILDING
This Birmingham penthouse condo exudes a comfortable, modern feel that retains some of its traditional values. The condo came with glass curtain walls overlooking an exterior balcony, with distant views of downtown Detroit. All of the primary spaces were strategically placed to take advantage of that view. Barrel-vaulted ceilings add a traditional feel and conceal ventilation, lighting, and other functional requirements. Space was a significant premium, so overlapping uses and the layout’s efficiency were important.

Tasked with building a new structure next to the client’s existing home that would include both a pool and a guest house, the design team’s goal was to foster the cohesive integration of nature within the residence — from the indigenous landscaping to capturing sunlight through skylights and wide windows. — CRANBROOK CUSTOM HOMES
Located on a bluff overlooking the Rouge River, this home was specifically designed for the site. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer breathtaking views of the backyard, while the exterior — which juxtaposes rough-cut Michigan granite with clean-lined stained wood siding and coolcolored brick — is a reflection of both the natural materials found in the surrounding environment and the home’s overall urban setting. CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE (Up to 4,000 sq. ft.)
The architects designed a new single-family house on a 12-acre site that includes stables and a pasture for the owners — a car designer and a dressage instructor. The owners’ request also called for an aesthetic that evokes the timelessness of the Mid-century furniture they own. By sticking to simple authentic materials that have been used in construction for hundreds of years, the house avoids the stylistic flourishes that would identify it with a specific time period.

Nestled within nature, this home exemplifies the melding of modern design principles with the pure aesthetics of the Prairie style by offering a panoramic experience that underscores harmony, balance, and a deep connection with the environment. Whether a historic renovation or a new restaurant, these spaces exemplify great design
Three sizable, eye-catching murals grace Workco’s flexible downtown Birmingham workspace — one in the entrance, one in a co-working space, and one in the kitchen. Each is a perfect balance between urban street art and the residential neighborhood. The company’s brand identity was also included in a subtle manner. Due to the artistic freedom given to the muralist, the outcome was unknown until the completion of the project.

Located in the garden level of a 19th century Victorian building, Café Sous Terre brings a modern French flair to Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood. What began as a blank space with original brick walls and a cement floor was transformed into a cafe full of cool-colored accents and visual contrasts — think brass finishes on lighting and hardware, a fluted tealblue tiled bar, walls of glossy green subway tile, and black and white floor tiles laid in an offset pattern.

The goal at Burrwood Veterinary in Royal Oak was to create a standout design that also communicates that pets will receive modern, friendly, and transparent care. The design team executed this with attention to architectural detail, use of color, and a minimalist aesthetic. White oak millwork and a floor-to-ceiling “smart-glass” wall (it toggles from clear to frosted, and offers clients a direct view into the treatment room, as well as privacy during procedures) are among the noteworthy additions. This Armenian church renovation creates a sense of belonging, is open and inviting, and addresses the multigenerational needs of the congregation. Glass, ornate woodwork, marble, stone, brick, rugs and textiles, and gold accents recall the church’s iconic gold dome. Elongated hexagons, a recurring formal motif, are drawn from the shape’s use in the sanctuary’s woodwork. In the lobby, a 26-footlong panelized mural by an Armenian artist features images of doves — an important symbol found in the existing altar artwork.

A Name To Remember
Meet our 2024 Rising Star, Johanna Goddard!
TEXT BY GIUSEPPA NADROWSKI
This year’s Rising Star, Johanna Goddard, has been drawn to “all things design and construction” for as long as she can remember.
“I used to — and still do — love helping my dad out with various home projects, and learning about different construction components and how things work. I knew design was for me when my family put an addition on my childhood home and I would observe the trades workers for hours and hours. I became captivated by the idea of being able to add my personal touch to my space and was fascinated with the way a house is constructed.”
Goddard’s passion followed her to Central Michigan University, where she majored in interior design and minored in professional sales and industrial technology. In August of 2020, not long after graduating with honors, Goddard joined Birmingham-based Ellwood Interiors, where she continues to impress today as a senior designer.
Her portfolio reflects her artistic philosophy, her devotion to creative design, and her dedication to continual improvement. “I believe in constantly seeking new and practical solutions that integrate the harmony and serenity found in natural environments. My approach combines innovative techniques with sustainable practices, creating spaces that not only inspire but also connect with the world around us,” Goddard says.
ELEMENTS
From the soaring ceiling to the earthy palettes and luxe textures, the home shown here exemplifies Rising Star Johanna Goddard’s skills.
While it’s hard for Goddard to choose a favorite among the projects she’s worked on, this Rising Star notes that a particular home — a 6,000-squarefoot renovation that saw a traditional space with Spanish elements transformed into a modern oasis — is one that continues to stand out.
“From reimagining intricate architectural details to selecting sleek, minimalist furnishings, every aspect of this project showcases the transformative power of design. I love the element of the unknown in renovations; you never know what hidden treasures or issues are waiting to be uncovered.”
She also appreciates the blank slate a new-build offers, and is currently in the process of finishing a 7,000-square-foot home that “celebrates the freedom of design expression.”
When she’s not designing, Goddard officiates lacrosse games (a sport she’s played since high school) and loves to spend time outdoors. “My ideal day would be a walk on the beach or a hike in the mountains,” where she says she could “read, sketch, or paint” for as long as her heart desires.
Congratulations Johanna!

With its location in the heart of the city’s vibrant downtown, this exceptional home defies convention by providing a spacious yet private outdoor haven.

TAKE A HARD LOOK
If you see granite, marble or quartz in your future…we’re your source.
For the past several years we’ve been fabricating and installing stone in some of Michigan’s finer homes. Whether you are planning from the ground up or renewing an existing space, you won’t need to wait to see the product coming from afar. We always have at least 4500 slabs on hand, ready to be sized and installed by our own craftsmen. Visit the website, view our latest projects and see what clients are saying about the results of our hard labor.
