“We love our home and we’re so happy with the decision to move to Michigan!”
— Cathy
Cathy and her husband needed a space that could both support their at-home work and provide the ideal environment for raising their newborn. By customizing their home plan to include two home offices and a nursery, they managed to create a design that perfectly met their needs.
Keep reading about Cathy’s building journey, learn about her home design vision, and see more of her gorgeous Sebastian home!
How did you incorporate your family’s lifestyle into your home?
We wanted to make sure we had enough bedrooms and a playroom for any future kids, two offices since we both work from home, and a nice guest space for friends and family who visit from Chicago. We also made the island huge because we love gathering in the kitchen.
What is your decorating inspiration?
Modern and clean, but still cozy and inviting.
What do you love about your Eastbrook community?
Our neighbors! We got so lucky. It’s always fun going for walks and running into so many friendly faces!
What are your favorite features in your home?
Probably the kitchen, the wooded views, the double doors, and our peanut’s nursery.
What was your Eastbrook Experience like?
616-226-3891 | EastbrookHomes.com
Are you ready to begin your Home Building Journey?
It was good! Everyone we worked with was super friendly. We knew what we wanted coming in and Eastbrook was able to bring our vision to life!
What does “home” mean to you?
We are both homebodies, so for us, home is our favorite place to spend time together. Home means safety, love, comfort, and fun!
Do you have any tips or tricks for new homeowners?
Look at a lot of other homes ahead of time so you know all the finishes Eastbrook can offer, and ask lots of questions about options! Seeing other homes after moving in made us realize things we would have loved to add to our home in hindsight.
If you’re interested in learning more about building or buying new with Eastbrook Homes, our team is here to help. Reach out today with your questions and dreams, and we’ll help turn them into a reality.

GUARD CITY, USA
Grand Haven’s iconic Coast Guard Festival turns 100!
Grand Haven, the first federally designated “Coast Guard City, USA,” is celebrating a very special anniversary this year: The annual Coast Guard Festival, slated for July 26 to Aug. 4, is turning 100!
The festival, which today includes a parade of ships, a carnival, food vendors, and more, looked a lot different a century ago. In 1924, it wasn’t much of a “festival” at all; it entailed a personnel picnic and rowing competitions for stationed service members.
visitgrandhaven.com 5 PHOTO: BOB PESKORSE JR./GRAND HAVEN PHOTOS OUR REGION
OUR REGION
Today, more than 350,000 people — a mix of residents, visitors from out of town, volunteers, sponsors, and even high-ranking Coast Guard dignitaries from Washington, D.C. — attend the festival.
Adding to the city’s Coast Guard lore is its standing as the nation’s very first “Coast Guard City, USA,” a congressional honor signed by President Bill Clinton on Nov. 13, 1998. Grand Haven more than lives up to this designation with its history of service (dating back to at least 1876) and its now century-old Coast Guard Festival.
The 2024 centennial celebration promises to be the biggest, most exciting iteration of the festival to date. Attendees can expect the mainstay events in addition to two live drone shows synced with music. The first drone show will be held after the Aug. 2 concert featuring The Modern Gentlemen. The second drone show will be held as part of the festival’s fireworks extravaganza.
The musical events at the Lynne Sherwood Waterfront Stadium will include opening musical acts from local bands. Country, rock, and Caribbean musicians
will perform in addition to a one-man band. This year’s festival will also include musical tributes to AC/DC, Queen, Jimmy Buffett, Heart, Van Halen, and The Highwaymen. Yächtley Crëw will rock the house on the final evening.
The 2024 festival will also honor its past. This year, the community picnic is moving back to downtown Grand Haven, where the first one was held. In addition, ships in Grand Haven’s harbor will display photographs (courtesy of the Tri-Cities Historical Museum) of Coast Guard vessels in that very same harbor over the years.
In keeping with tradition, the festival will conclude with a jaw-dropping fireworks display that will coincide with the Grand Haven Musical Fountain.
Getting to the festival is easy with the Harbor Transit shuttle, which stops at various designated parking locations in the Grand Haven Area so attendees can park their cars and hop right on.

Six Communities
GRAND HAVEN
Two brilliant red lighthouses and a brightly lit catwalk. Rainbowsherbet sunsets and miles of golden dunes. A playful musical fountain and the soothing sounds of the Lake Michigan surf.
Beach life takes center stage in Grand Haven. Whether you want to swim with the kids or stroll the shore with your sweetheart, whether you’re into adrenalinecharged water sports or prefer a scenic drive, Grand Haven promises a beach getaway to remember.
A few blocks from the Lake Michigan shore, Grand Haven’s vibrant downtown offers boutiques, cafés, art galleries, and fine dining. And you can easily transition between beach and shopping thanks to the 1.5-mile boardwalk connecting the lakeshore to the downtown.
Grand Haven’s charms don’t fade when the temperatures drop. A canopy of red and yellow leaves fills the sky above the 20-mile Lakeshore Connector Path, a paved multiuse trail popular with bicyclists. In the winter, snow lovers head to Mulligan’s Hollow for skiing and snowboarding on lighted paths.
SPRING LAKE
Water defines Spring Lake. North of downtown, the city’s namesake lake is the ideal spot to launch a personal watercraft, powerboat, daysailer, or stand-up paddleboard
from Lakeside Beach and Park. South of town, the Grand River draws bass fishermen and kayakers who launch from Mill Point Park or Spring Lake’s newly renovated Tanglefoot Park. Paddle to the east to enjoy the quiet beauty of river islands, rustling cattails, and hidden bayous. Bring your binoculars to observe the abundant birdlife that calls these waters home.
You don’t have to get wet to enjoy Spring Lake’s beautiful waterways. Pedal along the Lakeside or North Bank trails, which offer flat, paved surfaces well suited for even the youngest bicyclists, for views of sparkling Spring Lake. Tanglefoot Park, with its indoor farmers market, splash pad, public fireplace, and picnic tables, overlooks the Grand River as it winds its way to Lake Michigan.
Spring Lake’s historic downtown includes cafés, antique stores, and gift shops — all centered around the Epicurean Village. The stylish multiuse retail center offers finecasual indoor and outdoor dining at Finn’s Chophouse & Speakeasy, Grand Finale Bakeshop & Café, a salon, and shops selling home decor and bridalwear.
FERRYSBURG
A quick drive across Grand Haven’s drawbridge brings visitors to Ferrysburg. Embraced to the west by Lake Michigan, to the south by the Grand River, and to the east by Spring Lake, the small town
of Ferrysburg provides ample opportunities to escape into West Michigan’s great outdoors.
Make a stop at North Beach Park for a day of Lake Michigan water sports. Whether you’re into surfing, beachcombing, or romantic sunset walks, this sugar-sand beach never disappoints. Maybe you’ll simply want to dip your toes in the water for a refreshing end to an invigorating hike. Ten miles of trails crisscross the adjacent 600 acres of Lake Michigan greenway, hardwood forest, and dunes.
Ferrysburg’s North Ottawa Dunes County Park is also a great place for snow sports, its trails enjoyed by Nordic skiers and snowshoers in winter.
If traveling by two wheels is more your style, hop on U.S. Bicycle Route 35, which passes through Ferrysburg. The 500-mile bike trail
extends all the way from Michigan’s southern border to Sault Ste. Marie in the Upper Peninsula. But it’s a short jaunt from Ferrysburg to local ice cream and coffee shops, the Ferrysburg Nature Preserve, and the glimmering beaches of P.J. Hoffmaster State Park, Ottawa Sands County Park, and North Beach Park.
ALLENDALE
Follow the Grand River east out of Grand Haven, and you’ll arrive in Allendale, where the river carves West Michigan’s green hills into a lush and varied landscape. Peach, apple, and pear orchards are commonplace in Allendale, and growers frequently sell their fresh fruit and cut flowers at roadside stands.

islands busy with waterfowl, raccoons, and foxes make Allendale’s countryside perfect for nature lovers. Visit the Bass River Recreation Area to explore this region by boat, by mountain bike, on horseback, or on foot. Grand Ravines Park offers accessible trails for hiking, snowshoeing, and skiing, as well as a 275-foot-long suspension bridge, within its 200 forested acres.
There are plenty of cultural opportunities in Allendale, too, thanks to Grand Valley State University. The GVSU Art Gallery offers a permanent collection of extraordinary contemporary visual works as well as regularly changing art exhibitions. The Haas Center for Performing Arts presents a lineup of outstanding music and theatrical performances, from Bach concerts and Shakespeare plays to Oscar Wilde productions. Looking for a little more energy? Catch a football, basketball, or baseball game with the home team, the GVSU Lakers.
COOPERSVILLE
Enjoy the best of American rural life in Coopersville, just a quick drive up the expressway and halfway between Grand Haven and Grand Rapids.
Historic storefronts house modern boutiques like Katie’s Heart and Home, selling a selection of decor and gifts, and Metta and Shanti, a spa and boutique in downtown Coopersville. But this rural community is best known for the Coopersville Farm Museum — which displays vintage farm equipment, rural art, and memorabilia — and the Coopersville Historical Museum, which is housed in a historic train depot and features railroad collections and local items from the early 1900s. And be sure to check out the Coopersville and Marne Railway, which features special events like the annual pumpkin train ride in autumn and the Christmas train trip with Santa in winter, two perennial family favorites.
To take a little of Coopersville home with you, visit the community’s agricultural businesses. Green Vale Farm Creamery and Gavin Orchards sell
their own locally produced meat, cheese, and fruit at farm markets on-site.
WEST OLIVE
South of Grand Haven, West Olive promises the stunning natural beauty the Lake Michigan shoreline is famous for. And for many locals, the best part of life here is feeling they’ve got the entire lakeshore to themselves.
At Hemlock Crossing Park, delicate pink lady’s slippers and spindly columbines brighten the forest floor on spring hikes. Vibrantly colored leaves crunch underfoot in the fall, and giant snowflakes drift through the air in winter, when a thick layer of snow draws cross-country skiers and snowshoers. West Olive’s Pigeon Creek Park is popular in winter, too, with its free sledding hill, snowshoe trails, and groomed ski trails, several of which are lit after dark.
Kayakers head to the Pigeon River for a quiet paddle beneath towering hardwood trees, accompanied by the occasional great blue heron or migrating Canada geese. And boaters put in at the Pigeon Lake access for an early morning catch in this smaller inland lake or in nearby Lake Michigan.
At Kirk Park, a network of trails, boardwalks, and wooden staircases wind through Lake Michigan’s sandy ridges and blowouts on their way to Lake Michigan, where a one-third-mile dog-friendly beach means the entire family can splash to their hearts’ content.

SANDY FUN FOR ALL BEACHES +SAND DUNES
Sandy shorelines and fresh water are a key part of what makes the Grand Haven Area so fun! Our pristine, golden-sand beaches have received accolades far and wide, including from publications such as Travel + Leisure, Fodor’s Travel, and Parents magazine.
Best of all, our welcoming beaches are accessible thanks to accommodations such as specialized walkways, Mobimats, and track chairs.
Mobi-mats, available at the Grand Haven State Park, create a smooth, flat terrain for wheelchair users and individuals who may have trouble walking on uneven sand. They’re helpful for families pulling wagons, too. These mats are
water-, UV-, and mildew-resistant and are made from eco-friendly materials for a sustainable addition to the beach.
Track chairs are off-road electronic chairs that make it easy to travel over difficult terrains like sand, snow, and up to 8 inches of water. These chairs are available at the Grand Haven State Park and can be reserved for free so anyone can explore the local waterfront with
ease. Chairs have been donated to the Grand Haven State Park by the Goodale Family Foundation, Friends of Grand Haven State Park, the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation, and Lori’s Voice.
Learn more about the track chairs and how to reserve one at michigan. gov/dnr/about/accessibility/track-chairs, or call the Grand Haven State Park at 616.847.1309.

RIP CURRENTS
It’s not the ocean, but the currents in Lake Michigan can be so powerful at times that they can present a hazard to swimmers. Make sure you, your friends, and your family know how to handle yourselves if you get caught in a rip current. Some parks offer the flag warning system, but the best protection is being aware of the water conditions and knowledgeable about what to do in case of an emergency.

Fire Up Your (Jeep) Engines
Are you ready for a day of tricked-out Jeeps, thrilling demos, and a Jeep giveaway, all against the backdrop of beautiful downtown Grand Haven along the waterfront? The highly anticipated third annual Grand Haven Jeep Fest, which roars back into town on Saturday, May 18, will bring all that and more!
The fun starts early with the new Goosechase scavenger hunt, which runs now through May 18. During the scavenger hunt, which takes participants to different locations and introduces them to vendors and sponsors, event registrants are eligible to earn points to put toward raffle tickets for various Jeep Fest prizes.
Also new this year is the obstacle course right in Grand Haven’s community setting. Spectators can watch preregistered and qualified Jeep drivers testing their skills from designated viewing areas.
At the festival, patrons can shop Jeep-themed vendors selling the latest gear and accessories. In addition, there will be a kids tent run by volunteers for the Children’s Advocacy Center of Ottawa County, this year’s beneficiary of Jeep Fest.
And everyone can fuel their appetite and quench their thirst thanks to food trucks from Kitchen 55, Pizza Parliament, Smoke N Ash’s, and more. Plus, attendees can grab a cup of coffee from Kenzie’s Be Cafe, a previous beneficiary of Jeep Fest.
Lynne Sherwood Waterfront Stadium is the central location for registration and info and will have the kids tent, a merchandise trailer, announcements, and giveaways. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit the Grand Haven Jeep Fest Facebook page (facebook.com/ grandhavenjeepfest) to learn more. Your road map to fun awaits.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES
Going Above and Beyond the Green
American Dunes in Grand Haven is more than just a world-class golf club. Anchored by a Jack Nicklaus–designed course near the shores of Lake Michigan, the club is a mission-oriented organization dedicated to giving back to military families.
American Dunes, which opened in 2021, donates more than $1 million every year to Folds of Honor, a nonprofit that awards scholarships to the children and spouses of fallen or disabled service members. In the words of Nicklaus, who designed the golf course free of charge, “I love the game of golf, but I love my country even more.”
Dust off your clubs and play a round that gives back — on a pristine, uniquely Grand Haven course — at American Dunes this season. Visit americandunesgolfclub.com to learn more.

REST AND RECHARGE IN DUNCAN WOODS
Are you in need of a peaceful escape into nature but don’t want to travel far? Look no further than Duncan Memorial Park, aka Duncan Woods, proudly inducted into the Old-Growth Forest Network as of October 2023. Old-growth forests are the rarest forests in the U.S., and they have important ecological attributes not found elsewhere. The Old-Growth Forest Network works to preserve and restore the U.S.’s remaining old-growth forests for future generations.
Duncan Woods is certainly deserving of its place in the network. This special park was gifted to the city of Grand Haven in 1913. It is accessible year-round and is located in the heart of the city. Forty acres of unspoiled forest with towering hemlock and beech trees offers a calming backdrop for reconnecting with nature and seeing wildlife in their natural habitat.
Take a stroll or jog on one of the numerous trails, and feel free to bring along Fido — your leashed furry friend can join you on your adventure. Pack a picnic and spend the day immersed in this stunning natural area. Whichever you choose, you will find that breathing deep is easy here. Visit grandhaven.org/visitors/ parks/duncan-woods to learn more.

TRAVELING WITH A PET?
If you are, it’s important to seek accommodations with pet-friendly policies. Here’s a checklist of factors to consider when planning your visit.
1. Policies and requirements vary between hotel brands, as they do among privately owned or operated properties. Always check ahead with the individual hotel or property manager/owner to verify the pet policy.
2. Provide full disclosure and seek out prior approval. Unexpected animals are not necessarily welcome.
MAP LOCATION: 4

3. Find out if fees and deposits are required. Some hotels charge a nonrefundable pet deposit.
Others have a refundable deposit policy. Fees can differ, with some assessing a cost per pet, per night, versus a one-time rate for the stay.
4. While dogs may be permitted, it doesn’t mean other four-legged pets such as cats are just as welcome. Again, ask in advance.
5. Inquire about limitations and restrictions. Some establishments have a one- or two-pet limit per room and/or may have strict weight restrictions for each pet.

FRAGRANT FINDS
Spark your creativity and delight your senses at Garsnett Beacon Candle Co., which recently opened in Grand Haven. The shop sells premade soy candles in a variety of collections — including Winter & Holiday, Classics, and Sweet Memories — but the real draw is unbottling your inner perfumer and crafting your own candle in the chic studio on Washington Avenue.
Choose from more than 100 fragrances, pick your vessel, blend your scents, and pour your candle — it’s as simple as that! The Garsnett team is there to guide candle-makers through the process, which lasts about 30 to 45 minutes. Afterward, candles can take a couple of hours to set. Reservations are recommended, and shoppers are welcome to drop in and peruse Garsnett’s assortment of candles and related gifts, including wax warmers, artsy matchboxes, room and linen sprays, and more.

A DAY TO REMEMBER
Picture your perfect wedding day: Is it indoors or outdoors? Timeless or modern? Large and elaborate or simple and intimate?
Whatever you’re imagining, the best place to get started is a blank, customizable canvas that can bring any bride and groom’s vision to life.
The Pigeon Creek Event Center, which opened this past year at the Pigeon Creek Golf Course in West Olive, provides just that kind of backdrop. The simple, sophisticated venue can be personalized for any kind
of wedding and a variety of other events, comfortably accommodating up to 250 guests. It has both indoor and outdoor spaces available and a team of experts to help make sure everything runs smoothly on the big day.
The expansive indoor space boasts soaring ceilings and massive windows that frame breathtaking views of rolling greens. Lines disappear between the indoors and outdoors, inviting nature to play a starring role in your event.
Guests can immerse themselves in nature directly
40 visitgrandhaven.com
by stepping outside onto the expansive patio overlooking the 18th green of the golf course. This idyllic setting is perfect for cocktail hour.
On the technical side, Pigeon Creek’s state-of-theart design includes overhead projectors and screens, microphones, and a complete sound system throughout the complex.
The versatile spaces are easily transformed to accommodate any wedding or event style, from classic and romantic to modern and chic. With no detail left unattended, Pigeon Creek also offers two suites where the bridal
party can relax and enjoy preparation and pampering before the big event.
A curated selection of preferred vendors is also available for couples to find just the right professionals — from caterers to florists to DJs — to bring their wedding to life.
Throughout your planning journey, Pigeon Creek’s team of seasoned professionals is there to help, offering expert guidance and unwavering support to ensure your special day unfolds flawlessly.

HANDICAP ACCESSIBILITY:
Lodging, Downtown Amenities, Attractions
In the Grand Haven Area, we try to make as many accommodations for handicap accessibility as possible. Here are some ADA-accessible spots:
Baymont Inn & Suites, Best Western Beacon Inn, Holiday Inn, Rodeway Inn of Grand Haven, Rodeway Inn of Coopersville, Sleep Inn & Suites, Boyden House Bed & Breakfast, and Harbor House Inn are all lodging properties that offer handicapaccessible options. For additional information on local places to stay, call our Visitors Center at 616.842.4499.
Public restrooms throughout Grand Haven’s downtown boardwalk area are ADA accessible — as is the boardwalk, with user-friendly benches. The city’s downtown is ADA compliant, although businesses can vary in accessibility for shopping and dining.
Nearly every public parking lot offers handicap parking.
Grand Haven State Park has handicapaccessible picnic shelters, specially equipped beach sand wheelchairs that are offered on a first-come-first-served basis, and an accessible beach house, playground, and fishing pier.
Rosy Mound Natural Area has barrier-free facilities. Wheelchair-accessible trails are also available.
The seasonal Harbor Trolley has ADAaccessible seating.
Lynne Sherwood Waterfront Stadium is fully ADA accessible.
And located in the heart of Grand Haven, Central Park is predominantly ADA accessible.
