Welcome to Hour Detroit’s Health Guide, a magazine we have been publishing since 2013.
Looking back at our very first issue, I see that our template hasn’t changed too much. The features were centered on medical issues (in 2013, it was strokes, vaccines for whooping cough and the flu, and chronic pain); the departments covered health, nutrition, and exercise; and the Tool Kit for Life included Hour Detroit’s lists of Top Docs, Top Dentists, and Top Chiropractors.
One of the features in this issue, “Health at 50+,” is a topic close to my heart. During the past 10 months, I have lost three close friends (ages 50, 51, and 61) and four high school classmates, all in their 50s. All but one were men. At least two died from heart-related causes, and at least one died from cancer. After the second loss, I was asking, “What is going on with people dying in their 50s?” By the fifth, I said: “We need to find out why for our Health Guide.”
For this story, writer Lisa Ricci and I looked at causes of death for three different age groups (35-44, 45-54, and 55-64), comparing 2001 to 2021. We then asked two local geriatric specialists to look at the data, try to explain what we are seeing (such as the increase in deaths from heart disease and cancer between 45-to-54-year-olds and 55-to-64-year-olds), and give tips on what can be done to prevent these illnesses.
And while our template for the Health Guide has stayed consistent, the topics that we cover always change. This year’s second feature addresses social media’s influence on our eating habits, and the departments (what we call “Small Doses”) touch on a local nurse who is now designing and manufacturing scrubs that honor her religion, a thing called iPad kids (you probably know one!), how a local ketamine clinic is helping folks dealing with mental illness, and much more.
I hope this issue — which I dedicate to Caelie, Robert, Nick, Bruce, Bob, Don, and Jay — helps you live your healthiest and happiest life.

In February, Corewell Health became among the first health systems in the Midwest to treat patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation — a condition that causes a fast and irregular heart rhythm — using innovative technology that delivers pulsed electric fields. The first procedures were conducted at the Corewell Health Fred and Lena Meijer Heart Center in Grand Rapids and Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak. “Research indicates that early ablation is the key to positive, long-term outcomes for patients living with AFib,” says Simon Dixon, M.D., chief of cardiology at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.
Last June it was announced that Corktown Health, Michigan’s first health care center with a focus on providing equitable health care to the LGTBQ+ community, was scheduled to open its new Hazel Park location in 2024. It is now expected to open in the first quarter of 2025. The nonprofit offers services related to behavioral health, aging, fitness, nutrition, HIV prevention, and more. It assists nearly 3,000 people each year, with more than half of its current patients identifying as LGTBQ+. Opening this new location is part of Corktown Health’s Driving Health Equity Campaign and its effort to expand health care access to the LGBTQ+ community. Corktown Health officials believe they will be able to reach another 3,000 to 4,000 people at the Hazel Park facility, located at 24310 John R Road.
A team of researchers at Wayne State University and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute received a $9.6 million grant from the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health to find ways to improve cancer identification and treatment for African Americans over the next five years. “We have assembled one of the largest populations of African American cancer survivors to date in a study called ‘Detroit Research on Cancer Survivors’ — or ROCS — to now study genetic susceptibility and genetic testing in this population,” says Ann Schwartz, Ph.D., principal investigator of the project. “Our overall goal for this new project is to improve the identification and clinical management of hereditary and multiple primary cancers in African Americans, a population that has been underrepresented in genetic research, leading to disparities in cancer mortality.”

AS HUMANS UNDERTAKE more and more extensive space travel, care packages of food launched from Earth just won’t cut it. So how will people feed themselves in space? “The short answer is that space travelers will need to grow their own food,” says Michigan State University plant biologist Federica Brandizzi. To help determine how to do that, Brandizzi and her lab sent plant seeds on NASA’s 25-day uncrewed Artemis I mission, which covered 1.4 million miles. The experiment included seeds enriched with amino acids — intended to enhance the plants’ hardiness and nutrient levels — as well as a control group and tested the effects of the unique conditions of space on the seeds. Now that those seeds are back on Earth, Brandizzi and her team are analyzing them. The results could provide clues to how humans can grow sustainable — and healthy — food far, far from home.
Often-overlooked nervous system cells could hold the key to understanding — and treating — visceral pain, a common occurrence in those with irritable bowel syndrome and previous inflammation in the gut, according to researchers at Michigan State University. When exposed to inflammation, these cells, called glia, alter gut chemistry and sensitize nearby nerve fibers, lowering their threshold for sending pain signals. The research team measured nociception, the nervous system’s processing of harmful stimuli, as a proxy for pain in mice. “The major thing here is that it suggests a new mechanism contributing to pain in the gut,” says MSU physiology professor Brian Gulbransen. “And visceral pain is the most common gastrointestinal issue.” This insight could help scientists develop ways to reduce or stop visceral pain by targeting the glia.
A new treatment may provide long-term protection against ovarian cancer tumors, Wayne State University scientists report. This approach, called CARG-2020, created by CaroGen Corp., activates both arms of the immune system to prevent the recurrence of tumors. Plans are now underway to begin a Phase 1 clinical trial, which will test CARG-2020 on humans. The scientists anticipate that it will be more effective than other immune therapies, which typically have limited results in ovarian cancer patients. Ayesha Alvero, director of the ovarian cancer program at Wayne State’s C.S. Mott Center, says, “More than 13,000 women die of ovarian cancer in the United States each year. … CARG-2020 preclinical results are impressive and could potentially help to prolong and save lives in patients with ovarian cancer.”
Improving diabetes management
Wayne State University researchers have received a nearly $2.7 million grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to study and address the causes of inflammation from insulin infusion devices used to manage diabetes. While insulin infusion systems have improved over the past few decades, they still have a lifespan of only three days because of tissue damage and inflammation caused by the insertion of the device and by preservatives in the insulin itself. “All of the commercially available insulin formulations contain phenolic preservatives that prolong insulin shelf life but also cause tissue injury,” says Ulrike Klueh, professor of biomedical engineering at WSU. “Our team is focused on methods that reduce these preservatives’ tissue toxicity.” Accomplishing that goal could lead to significant advancements in diabetes management.
After 15 years of research, Wayne State University scientists have developed new technology that can accurately detect active tuberculosis antibodies quickly and inexpensively. Tuberculosis is the second highest infectious killer around the world, according to the World Health Organization, with 1.7 million deaths each year. But not everyone infected with TB will develop the active disease. Conventional tests for detecting TB don’t differentiate between latent infection and active disease, and the tests that do require collecting sputum, which is both time consuming and expensive. Now, the WSU team has discovered a way to create a simple non-sputum test for TB that is highly sensitive to the difference between active and latent forms. They have applied for a patent and are currently seeking investment funding.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has awarded $600,000 to Wayne State University, Michigan State University, and the University of Michigan to establish a “technical assistance collaborative” that will help local governments develop strategies for addressing the opioid epidemic. “Understanding the needs of the impacted communities will be key to the success of this program,” says Douglas Gage, MSU vice president for research. “Our team of world-class researchers and experts in community outreach and engagement will work in partnership with areas hardest hit by the opioid crisis to determine how to best deploy these important resources.”
RESISTANCE OF BACTERIA to antibiotics is a growing concern in the public health sphere, and scientists are continually looking for new ways to fight bacteria that can evade currently available antibiotics. A new discovery from University of Michigan researchers may help. Using biochemistry, structural biology, and computational modeling, the researchers revealed precisely how the first step in generating proteins — a process called transcription — occurs in a bacterial cell. Bacterial transcription is regulated by RNA elements called riboswitches. They’re found almost exclusively in bacteria, which means they could be targeted by antibiotics to disrupt the creation of necessary proteins — without harming humans. “Now, we understand the whole process of riboswitch regulation and can use that knowledge to specifically target these critical parts of bacterial life, hopefully averting the coming crisis of multidrug-resistant bacteria,” says U-M biochemist Nils Walter.
DURING THE COVID-19 pandemic, telemedicine was a potential lifesaver for older people — except for those who lacked internet access or know-how. A new report from two professors at Michigan universities documents how the shift to telehealth in 2020 left many older Detroiters behind. Over a third of Detroit residents age 65-plus have at least three chronic health conditions, making access to health care imperative. But the city has a low rate of internet connectivity — in fact, about 25 percent of Detroit’s population has no internet in their homes, far more than the state average. “A legacy of racist, discriminatory policies in Detroit have impeded education and health and literacy,” says Wayne State University professor Carrie Leach, who wrote the article with Nicholas Schroeck of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. “Combine that with poor access to the internet, and risks of poor health outcomes rise dramatically.”
It’s well known that being out in nature provides significant benefits for humans. But what about when people are indoors? A team of researchers from Michigan State University looked at one such case: children in elementary classrooms. To examine how views of nature affect students, the researchers measured the amount of natural scenery first and second graders could see from their classroom windows. They found that children with greater exposure to nature, especially trees, exhibited fewer behavioral issues. “Our findings suggest that it could be really beneficial for schools to consider what the views are from classroom windows,” says MSU professor Amber Pearson.
Cancer treatments — while potentially lifesaving — can be extremely tough on the body. Such is the case with cisplatin, which is widely used to treat lung, stomach, and other cancers. But an international team that includes a Michigan State University neuroscientist has identified an existing drug that could help alleviate cisplatin’s serious side effects, including peripheral neuropathy, which causes severe hand and foot pain, and kidney toxicity. Istradefylline is already approved by the FDA for treating Parkinson’s disease and can reduce peripheral neuropathy and kidney toxicity while maintaining the effectiveness of the treatment. “The preclinical research results have been promising,” says MSU’s Geoffroy Laumet. “In the future with istradefylline, the hope is that patients would be able to keep taking cisplatin without side effects or losing the drug’s effectiveness.”
New models created at the University of Michigan are harnessing machine learning to improve the efficacy of antibody medicines. Antibodies are a key element of the immune system; they bind to molecules called antigens found on disease-causing agents in order to eliminate them. But antibody treatments can sometimes fail by binding to non-antigen molecules or other antibodies. That’s where U-M’s machine-learning algorithms come in. The models, which were trained using data from 80 clinical-stage antibodies, pinpoint the structural issues within antibodies that cause them to bind to the wrong molecules and then determine how to fix them, saving drug researchers time and resources. The research team behind the algorithms has filed for a patent and is already employing their models to help biotech companies develop better antibodies.

For eight years, a metro Detroit clinic has been treating patients with a variety of issues. Here’s one man’s tale.
BY JACK THOMASANTHONY REEVES* moved from his home state of New York to metro Detroit in December 2021. The change felt drastic, as though he were leaving everything behind, and he began to feel depressed. He was able to function day-to-day, but “not well,” as he puts it.
His mother, who had depression for much of her life, recommended he try ketamine, a pharmaceutical that has gained much intrigue in recent years for its potential to treat depression and other mental disorders. “I was interested in just how psychedelics and ketamine are sort of coming into the mainstream,” Reeves says. “I was a little suspicious of some of the claims. But I had read that you get some immediate relief from depression.” He was also encouraged by research that was being done and treatment centers that existed at places like Columbia University and the University of Michigan.
Ketamine is an anesthetic and a dissociative that also produces some hallucinogenic/psychedelic effects. It was first synthesized in 1962 by Parke-Davis & Co., a Detroit-based pharmaceutical company, and U-M researchers conducted the first human trials of ketamine. It was used by Vietnam medics as an anesthetic for soldiers undergoing treatment, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
approved it for that purpose in 1970.
However, concerns over its use as a party drug in the ’80s led to it being classified by the Drug Enforcement Administration as a Schedule III drug, which the agency defines as having “moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence.” Today, the drug is used in hospitals and emergency medical vehicles as an anesthetic, deemed safe when used appropriately. In fact, it’s frequently used to treat children.
founding member of the American Society of Ketamine Physicians, Psychotherapists, and Practitioners.
In 2019, the FDA approved the use of Spravato (esketamine), a ketaminederivative nasal spray, for patients with treatment-resistant depression, after studies showed both short-term decreases in depression and successful remission among patients 16 weeks after taking it. As of March 2024, the FDA had not approved the use of ketamine itself for treating psychiatric disorders.
However, for years, physicians have been using ketamine “off-label” (which means using an FDA-approved drug for a purpose it’s not approved for) to treat anxiety, depression, and other disorders. One of those physicians is Dr. Megan Oxley, owner of Michigan Progressive Health and a
Oxley worked for 10 years as an emergency medicine physician before founding Michigan Progressive Health, a Royal Oak ketamine clinic, in 2016. She added an Ann Arbor location in 2020. Michigan Progressive Health offers intravenous ketamine infusions for patients looking to treat a variety of issues, including depression, anxiety, substance use disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and migraines.
“I want to be careful that I don’t sound like that die-hard fanatic where it’s like, everyone can get ketamine — the movement is like, ‘Ketamine is for everyone.’ And that isn’t necessarily the case,” Oxley says.
Services at Michigan Progressive Health’s clinics include ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, integrative psychology,
and ketamine-assisted palliative care. On staff are doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, and therapists. They even take Blue Cross Blue Shield and Aetna health insurance.
The first step for patients is to schedule an appointment to come in and have a discussion with a doctor to determine if they’re an appropriate medical candidate. Next, patients meet with a therapy team multiple times so the therapists can determine what mental health issues the client is experiencing. Finally, the patient schedules a ketamine medicine session.
At the session, the patient fills out a questionnaire where they self-report how they are feeling and then goes in a private room where a nurse takes vitals; the patient sits in an adjustable armchair and is hooked up to an IV. Patients are free to bring their own pillow, blanket, and music to listen to during the session through headphones. The session typically lasts about an hour, although it may not feel like it since ketamine can alter the perception of time.
On the five occasions he went, Reeves chose ambient music — no lyrics. He was allowed to choose the dose he received and the speed at which it was administered.
“It’s actually phenomenal how differently everyone experiences it,” Oxley says. In Reeves’s case, each time it felt as though he were flying through what he describes as a “Japanese pinball machine” filled with neon lights.
“I would kind of float above these lights, inspect them, and then I would float over and look at something else,” he says. “Or, I would just kind of carve through — like the fight scene in Star Wars when they’re in the aircraft, heading into the Death Star.”
ends, the patient is given 20-30 minutes of recovery time (or more) to let the ketamine wear off. For the next 12 hours, patients must avoid activities like driving and watching small children — thinking can still be impaired for up to a day.
“For a few weeks, my short-term memory was superb; I didn’t have to write anything down. It was really strange.”
—ANTHONY REEVES
Nurses checked in periodically. During each session, he felt a calm and warmth, particularly around the 30-minute mark, by his estimate. Except for once, when he tried a higher dose.
“I still saw the same things, but I felt more afraid,” Reeves says. “I think I was still partially in reality, but the ramp-up was so quick that I got flustered. I never really felt firmly grounded because I got hit so hard initially.” After the session
Despite the one difficult experience, Reeves says ketamine helped get him out of the depressive “funk” he was in. However, he says he probably wouldn’t try it again — he’d rather not have it be a “crutch.” He even began to see improvement in things unrelated to his mood, he says, such as short-term memory and the ability to stay on task (it’s worth noting that Reeves is diagnosed with adult ADHD). But it was temporary.
“I don’t have a particularly good memory for numbers and names and things,” he says. “My short-term memory is poor. For a few weeks, my short-term memory was superb; I didn’t have to write anything down. It was really strange.”
Reeves’s story is an anecdote. Though trials continue to be conducted, and many sing the substance’s praise, not all mainstream health organizations
and regulators are sold. A 2023 study published in The New England Journal of Medicine suggests intravenous ketamine is noninferior to electroconvulsive therapy in alleviating treatment-resistant depression and may have advantages over it (ECT is known to cause memory loss; ketamine is not). Another from Stanford Medicine suggests that a depressed patient’s belief they have received ketamine (even if they haven’t) can improve depressive symptoms.
The FDA issued a warning about ketamine last October, noting that it’s not approved for psychiatric treatment and that using it without the supervision of a medical professional monitoring “for sedation (sleepiness), dissociation (disconnection between a person’s thoughts, feelings, and sense of space, time, and self), and changes in vital signs (such as blood pressure and heart rate) may put patients at risk for serious adverse events.”
A recent systemic review of ketamine overdoses published in The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse found that most happened with other drugs in the victim’s system. Zero occurred in a therapeutic setting where a patient was being treated for depression.

FOUNDING A CLOTHING brand was the furthest thing from Dearborn native Hawraa Sabra’s mind. But, as she navigated life as a University of Detroit Mercy nursing student, suddenly it was at the forefront. Sabra, the 29-year-old daughter of Lebanese immigrants, needed a way to dress for nursing rotations while also respecting her faith. “As a Muslim woman, I choose to wear the hijab. And with that, there’s a certain way we dress,” she says.
She would layer traditional scrubs with long sleeves and wear longer, tuniclike hems. Other options were impossible to find unless she wanted to wear a scrub jacket, which would have added yet another layer. “That’s why I started brainstorming Avicenna,” she says of her clothing brand of scrubs.
Because she was a student, she says, she didn’t have any money to invest into the business. Figuring out the financials and getting the ideas from paper to production became more urgent in March 2020 with the onset of COVID-19. As a pediatric intensive care nurse, Sabra was an essential worker on the front line of an unprecedented pandemic. Her shifts at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit meant layers of full-body personal protective equipment
Hawraa Sabra (inset) has received orders from all over the U.S. and as far away as Australia. This spring, she released new styles and colors.
on top of the layers she wore to respect her faith and practice modesty. Between the seriousness of her work and the need to layer for both safety and her beliefs, Sabra admits it was a lot to manage. In response, she began saving money to start Avicenna Scrubs.
A year later, Sabra secured an overseas manufacturer and a designer in the U.K. She also took over her parents’ garage, bringing in rolling racks to house inventory and supplies to fulfill orders. “It was a struggle during the winter,” she recalls, “but we made it work.” She went on to formally launch the business in 2022.
Avicenna is the anglicized name of Ibn Sina, a medieval Islamic scholar widely acclaimed for his contributions to medicine. Sabra chose this name to honor Islam’s influence on modern medicine.
While the name gives a nod to the ancient, the scrubs line offers today’s women in medicine a modest yet practical solution for what to wear to work — think tons of pockets for pens and stethoscopes, breathable antimicrobial fabrics, and long hems for extra coverage.
“Modesty can mean something different to everyone,” she says before quickly affirming that regular scrubs are not immodest. Sabra simply wanted to create a line that felt authentic to her
and allowed her to focus on her work. “We all feel our best when we’re comfortable and we’re well represented,” she says.
A few months after the launch, Sabra hosted a pop-up at a Ramadan Suhoor festival in Dearborn. In the spirited, latenight atmosphere of feasting and celebration, she was not only able to meet many of her customers for the first time, but she was able to ask them for feedback. Through the interactions, she heard the need for more pockets, more luxe-feeling fabrics, and improved features. With feedback in hand, she secured a new manufacturer and even ditched the garage for an office and warehouse in Garden City.
Sabra now lives in Dearborn Heights and says it’s inspiring to see other young business owners in her community, “from food trucks, restaurants, coffee bars, flower shops, various boutiques, and everything in between,” she says. “I see so many successful people. And I feel like it’s contagious.” For Sabra, it also runs in the family, as her father owns the Express Poultry and Fish chain where he produces halal meats and imports Middle Eastern foods. “Everywhere I go, people tell me, ‘You look like somebody I know,’ and it ultimately ends up being my dad.”
Since landing in metro Detroit, Lori’s Hands has provided an opportunity for university students to interact with and learn from those dealing with chronic illness
OUT OF THE MANY skills you’d expect to learn as a volunteer assisting those with a chronic illness, playing the piano likely isn’t one of them. However, that’s exactly what happened when Antonia Gitau, a 20-yearold psychology major at Eastern Michigan University, joined the nonprofit Lori’s Hands as a volunteer. This was in April 2022, just a few months after the nonprofit organization launched a chapter in Ypsilanti after obtaining a grant from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund with the help from faculty at EMU.
Lori’s Hands began as a student club at the University of Delaware in 2009. Student Sarah LaFave founded it in honor of her mom, Lori LaFave, who passed away from breast cancer in 2003. The club’s goals were to improve quality of life for those dealing with chronic illness, like cancer or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, while also creating a meaningful and educational experience for its student volunteers, whether they’re helping clients with housework, picking up their prescriptions, or just chatting with them on the phone.
The club became a nonprofit organization in 2012, maintaining its location in Newark, Delaware, and expanding its services to Baltimore and metro Detroit. Each client is paired with two university students based on their proximity. When possible, students are matched with clients dealing with a chronic illness relevant to what they’re studying.
“A large percentage of our clients just want to talk to their students each week and hear what they’re studying in school,” says Maddi Riemenschneider, manager of the Ypsilanti-based metro Detroit chapter. “The students can also help with things made difficult by chronic disease. … Let’s say a person has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and they’re on oxygen 24/7. [When] they’re attached to that tank, running the vacuum can be super hard. So having students go in and run the vacuum for them for 10 to 15 minutes can be a huge difference in [making them more comfortable] in their own home.”
BY JULIANA LUMAJThe metro Detroit chapter serves anyone with a chronic illness who is 18 or older — although most of its clients are around 60 years old — in Washtenaw and Wayne counties. Student volunteers come from Wayne State University, the University of Michigan, and Eastern Michigan University, where Gitau is majoring in psychology with the hopes of attending medical school.
Every Tuesday for two hours, Gitau and another volunteer visit their client, who has mild dementia. They play puzzle games with them to help strengthen their memory. The client has also taught Gitau how to play the piano, which is a skill that Gitau says hasn’t wavered from the client’s memory.
“I was always interested in learning how to play piano, ... and she started teaching me how to play,” Gitau says, adding that seeing someone with dementia really knowing all the keys and teaching her, a beginner, was a life-changing experience.
Across all three locations, Lori’s Hands serves about 300 clients. In Michigan, it has worked with nearly 80 clients so far, including Ann Arbor resident Franklin McClure, 73, who is diagnosed with prostate cancer and has chronic back pain stemming from an injury he’s been dealing with for about 45 years.
“The students coming out has been
a very good experience for not only the socialization. … Sometimes there are little small jobs that I’m not feeling like doing at that time; I can get assistance from the students, which is a very big help. … I almost look at them as being like my godchildren,” McClure says, adding that volunteers have helped wash dishes and clean windows.
Although most student volunteers study subjects related to health care, Riemenschneider says Lori’s Hands is open to students of all majors.
“This is an opportunity for them to get to know the same older adult from week to week,” Riemenschneider says, adding that they may learn things such as “what resources are available in the community to help them, maybe what resources are lacking in the community, and how different systems — such as financial access or support systems from family and friends — affect someone’s health outcomes.”
“As someone interested in pursuing a career as a doctor, this opportunity has been a great way to learn about health care disparities,” Gitau says, adding that the exposure to the social determinants of health and the challenges people often face has inspired her to advocate for health equity and become a “culturally competent health care provider.”
Gen Alpha uses tablet screens more than any prior generation. We asked a scientist what that means.
BY JACK THOMASON TIKTOK, there’s been much talk about “iPad kids” — children with unfettered iPad access. It’s also an emblematic representation — a stereotype, if you will — of Generation Alpha children (born 2010-present), the offspring of millennial parents.
Here’s a rough, online meme-based description: At family functions and restaurant outings, the iPad kid stares blankly at their tablet, unable to interface with others, or simply to sit with themselves. They stand with poor posture, a result of countless screen hours in a strange half-lying, half-sitting position. Take the iPad away, and they’ll throw a fit. Their behavioral problems may extend to school, where they’re also staggeringly behind, supposedly due to excessive screen use.
There’s a lot being said about iPad kids, but is the label backed by science? We asked Dr. Jenny Radesky, a pediatrician, University of Michigan professor, and researcher and the lead author of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ 2016 policy statement on young children’s digital media use. “I think that the idea of saying, ‘Oh, they’re just this problematic generation,’ is not helpful for trying to understand what these kids are going through,” Radesky says.
During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, screen time increased among American children age 4 to 12 years and remained elevated even after the restrictions were lifted, a 2023 study published in JAMA Pediatrics found. It was also a time that provided Gen Alpha with fewer opportunities to play outside with other kids. “Some kids now might
not have good posture because they just don’t have the same core strength that they might have had with more opportunities to be physically active,” Radesky says. “It’s not necessarily from being hunched over looking at a tablet.”
Screens, besides being the medium for online education during the pandemic, also provided kids comfort during a stressful time with games, movies, and other entertainment. Self-soothing habits tend to stick. But if the tablet is a kid’s only coping mechanism, it can become a hindrance. “[Children] don’t get as much experience learning how to calm themselves down in other ways, which is really important for emotional development,” Radesky says.
If a parent frequently hands their young child a mobile device (like a tablet or cellphone) as a calming tool when the child is upset, the child is more likely to have increased emotional reactivity and decreased executive functioning (abilities like planning, focusing, self-control, and time management), a 2022 study Radesky co-authored suggests. The study examined children ages 3 to 5, and found the highest association with boys and children with higher temperamental surgency.
A child who uses media heavily during preschool years is more at risk for obesity, less sleep, and delays in cognitive, language, and social/emotional function. In its 2016 policy statement, the AAP says there’s limited evidence for any benefit of screen time for
children 2 and under — and excessive screen time for this age bracket can be harmful. It also recommends limiting screen time for children ages 2 to 5 to one hour a day.
Another issue that can lead to tantrums, Radesky says, is a certain genre of YouTube video that has little educational value and makes up almost half of the content aimed at children on the platform. Categorized as “wish fulfillment” content by Radesky and her team of researchers, the videos allow young viewers to live vicariously by watching someone else do things like eat chocolates, play with toys, or fill in a coloring book.
“I call it the refined sugar of media: pleasurable to consume, but then it’s really hard to stop when a parent takes that away,” Radesky says. Additionally, 1 in 5 YouTube video ads viewed by children 8 and under contained age-inappropriate products in a study her team conducted in 2020 for Common Sense Media.
Radesky hopes for more federal legislation that helps improve technology to prevent age-inappropriate content from being shown to kids, while addressing privacy concerns. She also believes targeted marketing campaigns aimed at young children and teens should be limited. Most of all, she encourages parents to have thoughtful conversations with their children about their media use — she’s not saying it’s all bad, by any means.
“I grew up playing on the Nintendo DS, and my kids now have a Switch,” Radesky says. “I’m trying to get them to admire good game design, or, say, a really good movie, where there’s been a great plot or the acting is really good, rather than it being clickbait or highly satisfying stuff that feels a bit mindless but takes up a lot of your time.”
SOME PEOPLE are often quick to associate the word “gamer” with delinquency and violence — especially after the 1999 Columbine High School shooting when the public discovered the perpetrators enjoyed playing Doom, a first-person shooter game. However, the tone has shifted, and people are taking note of how certain games can improve a child’s mental health, including the folks at Detroit’s Michigan Science Center who partnered with the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network and Youth United to host the “Game On for Mental Health” event in December 2023.
Five activities were available, including two video games — the Beat Saber virtual reality game and the Tetris gaming tournament that took place at the science stage, where friends and family watched as each person attempted to beat the previous high score. Tetris may seem like a simple puzzle game, but research indicates it could potentially help those experiencing hardship.
“There are some studies that have shown Tetris to be helpful with PTSD [post-traumatic stress disorder]. ... That helps with the intrusive memory,” says Dr. Shama Faheem, chief medical officer of the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network. The network supports and serves individuals with serious mental illness, children with serious emotional disturbance, people with autism, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and those with substance use disorders.
A study published by the European Journal of Psychotraumatology revealed that after watching a film filled with traumatic scenes, most participants noted a decrease in intrusive thoughts when they played Tetris four days later for 10 minutes.
There’s also a social aspect to gaming that has been a helpful tool for children who were isolated during the pandemic, says Bianca Miles, coordinator of the network’s Youth United initiative.
“There are still a lot of youth that are not comfortable coming into the public,” Miles says. “I think gaming will definitely help these children improve their mental health, especially with the advancement of social media; they get to connect with their peers. … Amongst the youth that we talk to, Roblox is a really big thing.” Miles says children tend to enjoy this
For too long, gaming has been perceived as a mindless activity with no benefit. Now, research and health professionals are sharing how it can improve a child’s mental health.
game platform because they can set up their own space and create their own environment. There’s a worry among parents about the types of online interactions their children may be exposed to. However, a study from Cornell University tested whether participants playing a game where the objective is to fight each other would produce socio-emotional or task-oriented conversations and if they were using positive or negative language. The study zoned in on nearly 6,000 text messages produced by 65 people and found that most of the conversations were positive and socioemotional, meaning players were mostly using conversational language such as “Wow, that was funny,” rather than task-oriented language focused on the game’s progress.
Although there are positives to gaming, Faheem stresses that “you have to do things in moderation, because then it gets a little overboard. That’s when you start to see some of the downsides.” Faheem says these include having anxious feelings, being unable to sleep, and avoiding social settings.
This is the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network’s first collaboration with the Michigan Science Center, and they hope to create more events together. “It was a really awesome idea that they brought to us,” says Lucy Hale, chief business officer at the Michigan Science Center. “It was great to have a health care entity focused on mental health and youth want to be engaged in the science center — particularly around the concept of gaming and mental health. … We’re hoping this is the start of a really great partnership with them.”
FORMER DETROITER Cristy Lee, who turned her passion for renovation and motorcycles into a successful TV career hosting shows such as HGTV’s Steal This House, returned to TV at the beginning of the year for the first time since she was diagnosed with Graves’ disease and thyroid eye disease in 2023. Hour Detroit spoke with Lee just as her new HGTV series, Battle on the Mountain, was premiering in January. Here, she talks about her life after her diagnosis, her return to work, and how Detroit played a part in shaping her career.
Hour Detroit: Tell us about your move from Florida to Michigan.
I moved to Detroit from Daytona Beach in 2005 to invest in real estate and flip and rent houses. I’ve worked in home renovating, interior design, and other behind-the-scenes projects with HGTV in Detroit for seven years. The Motor City, of course, also helped me turn my career towards motorcycles. I rode my first motorcycle 18 years ago, and it became my passion. I started working with MotorTrend Network, where I did a lot with automotive projects.
What did it mean to you to represent the city of Detroit on HGTV?
When I lived in Detroit, I lived right off Seven Mile. I felt really proud to be living in the state of Michigan, especially in the city of Detroit. Outside of real estate, Detroit was my beginning in the world of broadcasting. I started at 101 WRIF, which led me to MotorTrend and HGTV. Between then, I worked at the Renaissance Center and MGM Grand; I worked for the Pistons and the Red Wings. I have a lot of roots in Detroit.
What was your experience with Graves’ disease and thyroid eye disease?
About one year ago, I started showing symptoms. You could call it my sick-versary.
Both Graves’ disease and thyroid eye disease are autoimmune disorders. They are such rare diseases, and I had never heard of them before. I went through a lot of treatments in the past year, like orbital eye decompression surgeries, therapy treatments, and others. I was bedridden for a few months, and my mental health was pretty bad. I’m so glad I’m back on HGTV because I needed so badly to get back out and be me.
It was a godsend having a doctor I could trust and talk to, and now I’m prioritizing my health over everything.
—CRISTY LEE
What was the diagnosis like for you, knowing you would have to put your activities on pause?
Getting a diagnosis was insane for me. My symptoms were very severe, which was painful, but I got a diagnosis fast. I was traveling for work, and I had what I thought was a horrific migraine. My symptoms progressed, and a week later, I was in the emergency room. I got my diagnosis at the ER, and I saw local doctors soon after. It was a godsend having a doctor I could trust and talk to, and now I’m prioritizing my health over everything.
Where are you at with these health challenges now?
I’m considering this a journey. Since there is no cure for thyroid eye disease or Graves’ disease, it’s more a process of remission. There are active periods and inactive periods. Monitoring Graves’ disease is less stressful with my daily medications. My thyroid, on the other hand, had to be taken
out, and I changed a lot about my lifestyle. I still have to monitor my blood work and I have frequent doctor’s appointments, but I feel like I’m doing amazing.
You returned to HGTV on Battle on the Mountain. Can you share a little bit about what the show is about and your role?
In the show, there are three couples renovating mountain homes in Colorado. Each team works with a mentor, who is another familiar face from HGTV. There are little challenges sprinkled through — [that’s] where I come in. I will present these challenges to the couples, who compete for things like more money for their renovation budget, the opportunity to pick their paint colors, or getting hardware or materials first. I come in and throw a curveball.
How does it feel to be back?
Of course it felt good to be back doing what I love. I have to thank all the folks at HGTV for being so patient with me. I didn’t tell HGTV about what was going on with my health until the middle of [last] year because I had no idea what was going to happen. Still, they were so empathetic and understanding. It’s a morale boost, being back, and it’s huge for me.
Moving forward, what are your plans for this year?
I recently purchased a new [metro Detroit] shop, and I have a lot of fun projects coming along with that. Because of my health issues, I wasn’t able to put a helmet on for most of last year, so I couldn’t do a lot of the things I love doing. I’m looking forward to getting back to that. I’m also planning on launching new home projects and car projects. I’m hoping to launch a new brand to put all my projects under one umbrella. I have a new show with MotorTrend as well. My doctor always tells me that adrenaline is not my friend. I disagree.
What health concerns to look out for in your 50s, and how to stay as healthy as possible at midlife and beyond
BY LISA RICCIFrom managing career transitions, to experiencing shifts in family dynamics, to grappling with the meaning of life, our 50s can bring myriad complexities. And with an increased risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers, staying healthy from midlife on likewise becomes more complex. We asked two geriatric specialists to weigh in on the biggest health concerns at midlife, how they’ve evolved in recent years, and what we can do to avoid them.
Cancer and heart disease remain the No. 1 and 2 causes of death in the U.S., respectively.
“Heart disease is not going anywhere. It’s a big problem for adults over the age of 45,” says Dr. Aishah Ra ee, a specialist in geriatrics and internal medicine at Trinity Health Ann Arbor. “As we age, the cardiovascular system undergoes physiological changes that a ect its e ciency. Our blood vessels become less compliant and can contribute to increases in blood pressure. Our baroreceptors [sensors in blood vessels] are less sensitive, and we are at increased risk for developing arrhythmias such as atrial brillation. These diagnoses can a ect the heart function over time, causing chronic changes requiring lifelong treatment with medications. In women particularly, uctuations in hormones during menopause increase cardiovascular disease risk.”
Additionally, Ra ee notes, despite a decrease in cancer deaths (see chart on page 33), “the cardiometabolic [death rate] has stayed where it was, even though we have better treatments, which is concerning.” The disconnect, she says, may be attributable to the inability of some patients to a ord the medications they need.
Another concerning trend: the rise of colon cancer in younger people. “Poor diet is one of the main working hypotheses as to why,” says Dr. Stacey Ru , assistant medical director at the Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital Geriatric Assessment Clinic in Berkley. “We have moved away from a wholefood diet to [a] highly processed, easy-to-prepare diet, which is also low in ber.”
To lower your risk of both cancer and heart disease, “keeping a healthy diet, exercising on a regular basis, and screenings are critical,” Ru says. “In many cases, these cardiovascular changes with aging do not come with symptoms, making regular health screenings and blood pressure checks vital to treatment.” (See sidebars for more information.)
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cases of diabetes in the U.S. have risen to an estimated 37.3 million, and diabetes remains in the top ve causes of death in people over 55. However, amid these sobering numbers, Ra ee says that “we have great new medications for diabetes. Some can lower A1C and can also improve heart health. Some have e ects on weight and help you feel fuller for longer and improve how the body responds metabolically to food.”
“It’s never too late to start a healthy lifestyle,” Ru says. “Start an exercise regimen with guidance. Also, strength training can o en be overlooked. It’s great for stability, mobility, and fall prevention, which is also a focus at mid-age.”

Dr. Aishah Ra ee of Trinity Health in Ann Arbor recommends the following:
Wellness Checks:
From 50+: Conduct yearly wellness checks, including blood pressure screenings, weight checks, and assessments for overall health concerns.
Screening Tests:
Colon Cancer: Begin at age 45.
Lung Cancer: Adults 50-80 with a smoking history should be screened with an imaging study such as a CT scan.
For Men: Prostate cancer screenings, starting at age 55.
For Women: Mammography every two years, Pap test every five years, if low risk. Bone density tests should begin at 65.
Monitoring: Yearly doctors visits for medical history and physicals
Bloodwork: Electrolytes, kidney function, blood counts, cholesterol, and diabetes.
Immunizations: Get recommended immunizations for your age group. The CDC is always up to date.
Mobility and Falls Prevention: Starting at age 65.
Mental Health: Be on the lookout for midlife mood changes, depression, and anxiety, and discuss with your doctor.
In recent years, drug-induced deaths — from opioids in particular — have been on the rise for those 50 and over. In fact, in 2021, opioids were involved in 75% of all overdose deaths. Opioid overdoses are so prevalent that, in 2019, Michigan passed a bill allowing libraries to stock and administer naloxone, a “rescue spray” that can save lives by reversing the effects of opioids.
“If we look at overdose death rates involving opioids, they had a very steep increase in 2020, according to the CDC,” Raffee says. “It’s very easy to deduct that social isolation for this middle-aged group along with the overprescribing of these drugs, drug companies pushing opioids, and pandemic social isolation became the perfect storm.”
“It’s worth noting that if there is already a chemical dependency, there are treatment programs,” she says. “If you have a use disorder, seeking treatment is becoming easier than ever.”
Lawrence Kurz, M.D., of Michigan Orthopaedic Surgeons, says maintaining healthy bone mass is key to maintaining good health in midlife and beyond.
We lose bone mass in our 60s, 70s, and 80s, Kurz says, in part because we become less active, leading to less exposure to sunlight, which supports vitamin D production. Likewise, we lose muscle mass at a rate of almost 1% per year, beginning from age 40 to 50. “This in turn lowers our basal metabolic rate of losing calories, which leads to weight gain. This can lead to an increased risk of diabetes and heart disease,” he says.
What You Can Do About It
“It behooves people as they get older to move their muscles through weight training, and even simple walking is very important,” Kurz says. He adds that bone mass is positively impacted by “weightbearing forces.” These include:
Running: This provides the greatest benefit, Kurz says, though many people cannot tolerate running as they get older.
Walking: Aim for “30-40 minutes a day, even at a leisurely pace. Not everyone is amenable to weight training and cardio, but almost everyone can walk.”
Standing: This can also help maintain bone mass. “People should stand as much as they can, and if needed, they can certainly hold on to something for balance.”
Lifting: “People can try lifting even light weights.”
Food as Medicine
Kurz recommends a whole-food, plantbased diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and flaxseeds, and low in animal products. But there’s one type of food he considers to be a secret weapon in combating all potential medical issues.
“The quickest way to get problems taken care of is to increase fiber in the diet. That is the catchall. It can help diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity.” As a bonus, Kurz says that patients who follow this regimen see their energy levels skyrocket. “They tell me, ‘I feel like I can do things like I haven’t done before.’”
COVID-19 brought the world to a standstill in 2020 but remains the third leading cause of death in the United States for those 55 and over.
“People 65 and above and those 50 and above with chronic respiratory conditions are still at very high risk for hospitalization and death,” Ra ee says. “This is the h year of the pandemic, and we are all tired,” she acknowledges. “But we need to stay informed and aware.”
“We can protect our neighbors and ourselves,” Ra ee says. “It’s important to stay up to date with vaccines, always wash hands, and wear a mask, especially for those at risk with comorbidities such as COPD, obesity, and asthma.” In particular, Ra ee counsels wearing a mask “if you are in a place where there is likely to be a high risk of transmission or if you are at risk of getting very ill from the disease.”
While they impact di erent biological systems, many of the health threats at midlife share one thing in common: Diet and exercise can help keep them at bay.
“In general, heart-healthy foods are also good for our brain,” says Dr. Stacey Ru , assistant medical director at the Corewell Health
William Beaumont University Hospital Geriatric Assessment Clinic in Berkley. For example, the MIND diet, a combination of the heart-healthy Mediterranean and DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diets, has been associated with a reduced risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease due to its emphasis on brain-healthy foods like leafy greens, berries, nuts, and olive oil. Its focus on nutrient-dense foods rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties can potentially improve overall brain health and cognitive function.
Ru says we can all learn lessons from the Blue Zones — places in the world, such as Sardinia, Italy, and Okinawa, Japan, where “people tend to age successfully and maintain cognitive function and independence into their 90s and 100s.”
“They studied these areas and identified some of the common attributes: a high level of physical activity; high connection with a social, religious, or spiritual network; seeing friends and family on a regular basis; and a healthy diet.”
In 2020, as many as 5.8 million Americans had Alzheimer’s disease, and this number is projected to nearly triple to 14 million by 2060, according to the CDC.
“Dementia is an umbrella term for brain failure over time, a change in neurons that can cause memory loss and motor function,” Ru explains. “While there are di erent causes, it is generally Alzheimer’s.” The increase in diagnoses, she says, is in part because “people are more aware of signs and symptoms and get evaluation sooner.”
“Some medications have limited e ect. Newer medications are exciting in the sense that they may hold some promise in the future, but there is concern about the speed of approval and side e ects,” Ra ee says. Among current treatments, Ra ee cites three types of medications.
AChE inhibitors, or anti-cholinesterases, which inhibit the cholinesterase enzyme from breaking down, “allow for the increased availability of neurotransmitters, resulting in short-term improvements in memory and cognition.” The second type is NMDA receptor antagonists, such as memantine, which prolong neuronal activity, helping with thinking and memory. The third is monoclonal antibodies, in such medications as aducanumab and lecanemab. “[These] can assist with clearance of amyloid proteins, the substance thought to accumulate and cause symptoms of dementia. These are not being widely used yet, but have been FDA approved,” she says. “There are promising treatments, but research needs to go further.”
Social media’s influence is STRONG in nearly EVERY facet of life. But just how much does it INFLUENCE our eating BEHAVIORS?
Local experts WEIGH in.
BY BLAKE MILLERAs a college student at Michigan State University, Colleen Christensen was an impressionable young adult. “I struggled a lot with my relationship with food,” says the Michigan native, who admits she was influenced by fad diets. “I used to be trapped in a cycle of food deprivation, bingeing, and, honestly, just feeling really out of control when it came to anything related to food.”
It took years of self-reflection and trial and error before the current Grand Rapids resident Christensen, now a registered dietician and founder of The SociEATy app, “found a balance” with food and diet.
“When I was struggling, the road was long and confusing, and I felt like I was the only one going through this. I can’t imagine what that road would’ve looked or felt like had social media been available back then.”
Today, we are exposed to nutrition, diet, and weight loss trends and
fads more than ever before. According to the 2023 Food and Health Survey conducted by the International Food Information Council, 4 in 10 Americans have come across social media content on food and nutrition in the past year. What’s more, Americans are wildly in uenced by what they’re seeing as they scroll. Twenty-eight percent say they have reevaluated their relationship with food a er consuming social media.
It’s the latter that’s most concerning, says Kendrin Sonneville, a registered dietician who holds a Doctor of Science. “The ‘aspirational’ content presented on social media can lead to feelings of inadequacy and negatively a ect people’s self-esteem and body image,” says Sonneville, an associate professor of nutritional sciences at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. “These feelings may lead some people to adopt unsustainable or extreme dietary changes or disordered eating behaviors.”
Social media users more o en than not believe what they see when scrolling through their feeds and posts despite hearing di erently from other expert sources. In fact, 68% of Americans feel they’ve seen con icting information about what foods to eat or avoid on social media, and 60% feel that the con icting information makes them doubt their eating choices.
People with li le to no nutrition credentials can say whatever they want, and people will believe it. And that’s troubling.”
—Colleen Christensen, registered dietician
or diet. What’s more, among those who have seen social media content about food and nutrition in the past year, 18% say they started a diet or new eating pattern as a result.
“There have always been diet and nutrition fads and trends,” explains Tim Bogg, associate professor of psychology at Wayne State University. “What we’re seeing now, though, is that those trends and fads are catalyzed by social media. Now those fads that were once word of mouth among friends can be shared around the world via TikTok and Facebook and Instagram within seconds. So, it’s not that social media is creating these trends — it’s just making them more accessible and acting as an accelerant.”
“It’s like a machine you keep feeding,” Christensen says. “I can see it in the population I work with, how taxing it can be consuming all of this information about nutrition and food on social media. I see how it negatively a ects their lives by causing anxiety around food.”
Sonneville agrees. “Information presented on social media is heavily in uenced by advertisers, in uencers, and others who stand to pro t when we have
ous and unethical in a lot of ways. And on top of that, people with little to no nutrition credentials can say whatever they want, and people will believe it. And that’s troubling.”
“It’s so confusing for people because they see one thing and then see another contradicting it,” Christensen says. “And a lot of what’s out there is just simply misinformation. I saw someone post the other day that said that oatmeal is bad for you. Oatmeal? It’s just ridiculous. Today it’s all about the algorithm. What can someone post that’s so outlandish that it gets the most clicks and the most views. Not only is it o entimes untrue, but it’s disingenu-
Social media in uencers are so persuasive, in fact, that 21% of people say they trust what they see “a lot,” while almost 50% of people trust a little of the nutrition and weight loss advice they see on social media. But how much does social media inform what and how we eat? One in 10 Americans reported that a recommendation or ad backed by an in uencer on social media platforms has been a motivation for their eating patterns
an unhealthy relationship with food and our bodies,” she says. “Social media algorithms unfortunately favor extreme nutrition messaging over gentler and more sustainable content.” One 2023 study found that among the 10-to-24-year-old population, “social media usage is a plausible risk factor for the development of eating disorders.”
One of the biggest diet trends gaining momentum on social media is the use of weight loss drugs such as Ozempic, Wegovy, or generic semaglutide. These products have exploded in popularity in the last couple of years, a er celebrities and social media in uencers began using
them and singing their praises publicly on their platforms. Social media has made these weight loss drugs so popular, in fact, that according to investment bank Morgan Stanley, mentions of one of these drugs have tripled on TikTok alone since last summer.
While these drugs can be life-changing for patients with Type 2 diabetes, which is what most of these weight loss drugs have been approved for, social media influencers and celebrities on these platforms have perpetuated the hype and even misinformation about the drugs.
Facing backlash from medical professionals and nutrition experts, social media platforms have taken steps to curb misinformation about not only weight loss drugs but potentially unsafe fad diets and trends populating the apps. Last summer, TikTok tightened its policies regarding videos about these popular weight loss drugs and how they can instigate disordered eating. Similarly, Meta (owner of Instagram and Facebook) announced in
One in 10 Americans reported that a recommendation or ad backed by an influencer on social media platforms has been a motivation for their eating patterns or diet.” “
January that it would restrict teens from viewing content that deals with topics such as eating disorders. “Meta is at least acknowledging its responsibility in perpetuating some of these dangerous weight loss trends we’re seeing on social media,” Bogg says.
While social media generally receives a bad reputation for perpetuating dangerous fads and misinformation about weight loss and nutrition, there is a positive aspect to it, Christensen says. “Social media can be a great way of accessing information,” she explains. “It’s never a replacement for working with a professional. But some people can’t afford to see a dietician, so following one like myself or others can be helpful.”
Facebook is the most-used social media app for accessing nutrition information. It’s also one of the best apps to use to find a
group of like-minded individuals.
“Having a community online can be amazingly helpful to someone,” Christensen says. “One of the biggest things that I hear on a daily basis from my clients is, ‘I’m not alone. I didn’t realize others struggled with this, too. I’m not broken; I’m not the weird one.’ In that way, social media is a huge benefit.”
Sonneville echoes this, adding, “Social media communities can be a valuable resource for information exchange and support. Fat liberation and anti-diet communities on social media can also be a source of support for individuals who are trying to divest from diet culture and break the cycle of chronic dieting.”
Adds Bogg, “Social media can get a bad reputation for negatively impacting one’s body image or instigating body dysmorphia. Conversely, there’s also content being
put out by those who are recovering or living with eating disorders and how they’re managing any recurrence of symptoms, and in situations like that, it can be very helpful to someone who’s also in the same situation.”
While the debate continues over social media’s influence on eating behaviors of people young and old, the fact remains: Social media is here to stay, and along with it, the highs and lows as they relate to weight loss and nutrition. Christensen offers this warning: “Be wary of the things you hear on social media,” she says. “Reach out to people you trust and look for people with credentials. If someone doesn’t cite their sources, that’s a huge red flag. Also, view everything with a critical lens — even if someone says it with the utmost confidence, [that] does not make it true.”
For more than 20 years, Hour Detroit has published an annual list of Top Doctors in metro Detroit. We’ve followed up with lists of Top Chiropractors and Top Dentists. Why? We’re hard-pressed to find anyone who isn’t concerned with either staying or getting healthy. Our health care providers in southeast Michigan are hugely important in that endeavor, and it’s only natural to want to know that these professionals who touch our lives so personally are the best at what they do.
With that comes the most common question about these lists: How do we determine who’s “top”? Most notably, winning physicians are nominated and voted on exclusively by their peers — the M.D.s and D.O.s who are the most qualified to judge who among them are the best at what they do. There is a similar process for the Top Dentists and Top Chiropractors lists.
Hour Detroit’s Health Guide puts all three of these most recent lists — along with a senior care and a hospital directory — into one handy package.
We hope you’ll consider them a valuable resource all year long — for your good health.
Note: The lists for Top Doctors, Top Dentists, and Top Chiropractors are the same lists that ran in Hour Detroit during the years indicated.
Winning doctors in adult and pediatric specialties, as voted on by their peers. Top vote-getters are denoted with an asterisk (*). In some categories, there are ties.

Disclaimer Top Doctors are nominated exclusively by M.D.s and D.O.s in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, and Livingston counties. Winning physicians are not selected by any member of the HourDetroitstaff. Doctors’ names and specialties are taken from online surveys submitted by physicians. HourDetroit tabulates the votes and fact-checks names and affiliations of winners. Please note: Hospitals listed after winners’ names indicate, in most cases, physicians’ primary affiliations. Most doctors practice out of one hospital/health system, but have admitting rights/attending privileges at other locations. Also: Doctors’ names are typically listed in association with one or more umbrella health care provider but may work out of a specific hospital within that system.

Does your doctor give you a 90-day guarantee to improve your health or your initial office visit is free? Does your doctor get to the origin of your medical issue instead of just treat the symptoms? Dr. Doug Cutler, ND, does all of these, so expect your health to improve.
Trained in naturopathic medicine, Dr. Cutler founded Cutler Integrative Medicine and the Integrative Health Model using a holistic approach with naturopathic medicine to create breakthroughs in his patients’ health by getting to the cause of symptoms while empowering patients to better health. Cutler Integrative Medicine is a premier award-winning wellness clinic that provides patients with unparalleled individualized naturopathic health care, education, and support in their progression toward enhanced health for body, mind, and spirit. Cutler’s wife, Holly, also heads the award-winning FACE Skincare~Medical~Wellness clinic, nationally recognized by Forbes as “one of the most advanced medical spas in the country.”
Always in demand and on the forefront of holistic innovation, Cutler pioneered ClubIV, one of the most extensive IV nutrient clinics in the country and one of only a few FDA/ USP-compliant IV nutrient therapy clinics. ClubIV offers more than 80 advanced nutrient formulas that are customized to increase energy, enhance mood, improve sleep, optimize immune function, recover cellular homeostasis, and at the same time, decrease stress, support weight loss, and more. Culter says although oral nutrient supplementation is important, there’s no comparison to the superior potency of nutrients delivered via IV/IM nutrient therapy, in which patients utilize 100 percent of the nutrients versus absorbing 50-60 percent orally. The IV nutrients bypass the gastrointestinal system so the results are fast, allowing you to feel better sooner while addressing a number of common issues.
Cutler is among one of the few doctors in Michigan to receive advanced training in environmental medicine and genetic polymorphisms. His specialties include naturopathic medicine and integrative medicine, with an expertise in chemical and toxic metal syndromes, autoimmune issues, cardio toxicology, endocrine issues, psychoneuroimmunology, food allergies and sensitivities, gastrointestinal issues, preconception care, pediatrics, hormonal imbalances, anti-aging, weight issues, chronic fatigue syndrome, and disease prevention and health education.
Cutler’s philosophy as a licensed naturopathic physician is focused on determining the underlying causes of an illness while also treating the symptoms which are often the combination of several factors
such as nutritional or biochemical dysfunctions, lifestyle, genetics, environmental toxicants, as well as the mind, emotions and beliefs.
To improve one’s body or skin, the FACE clinic offers more than 40 different laser and facial technologies including body sculpting, celebrity facials, laser skin rejuvenation, and injectable fillers.
Dr. Cutler is a member of the Naturopathic Academy of Environmental Medicine, American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, the Michigan Association of Naturopathic Physicians, the American College for Advancement in Medicine, and the Pediatric Association of Naturopathic Physicians. ■ Cutler

The doctors at the prestigious Consultants in Ophthalmic & Facial Plastic Surgery don’t begin an initial consultation by scheduling a date for surgery. They begin by listening to what the patient wants to accomplish, and then figuring out the best, most effective, and most affordable way to get there.
Their patients not only love the results, but appreciate the process.
“Not only did I know that I was in the very best medical hands, but I felt well cared for from beginning to end, and that makes all the difference,” says a patient from Livonia.
Adds a patient from Shelby Township: “Everyone was friendly, polite, and professional. Every step was explained, all my questions were answered completely, and I was made very comfortable. The facility was just the right size, and it was very clean and well-organized. Dr. Black is very personable and extremely skilled.”
The mission at Consultants in Ophthalmic & Facial Plastic Surgery is simple: to deliver excellence in clinical care and customer service.
Highly respected physicians
Dr. Geoffrey J. Gladstone, Dr. Evan H. Black, Dr. Francesca Nesi-Eloff, Dr. Dianne M. Schlachter, Dr. Robert A. Beaulieu, and Dr. Shravani Mikkilineni practice throughout southeast Michigan and Flint, and hold affiliations with only the top accredited hospitals.
As experts in the field of eye plastic surgery, the doctors at Consultants in Ophthalmic &
Facial Plastic Surgery take skill and training to a whole new level. Their unwavering dedication is evident in their multitude of professional affiliations, certifications, leadership and faculty appointments, strong association with accredited facilities, professorships, and the numerous textbooks they’ve authored.
Each physician has received awards and recognition for their deep commitment to continuously improving the field of ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery. They’re frequent lecturers both nationally and internationally. Additionally, they’ve authored numerous articles on surgical techniques, as well as textbooks and textbook chapters that set the standard for their field.
Procedures and services offered by Consultants in Ophthalmic & Facial Plastic Surgery include:
Cosmetic Procedures: As time passes, our skin shows the natural, inevitable signs of aging — wrinkles and sagging. Cosmetic eyelid and forehead procedures will smooth lines and wrinkles, remove lower eyelid bags, tighten sagging skin, and lift drooping eyelids and brows so you can look as young and rejuvenated as you feel. These procedures include forehead lift/ brow lift; blepharoplasty, or upper eyelid surgery; and lower eyelid blepharoplasty.
Reconstructive Surgery: This is performed to improve the function or appearance of a face that’s abnormal because of congenital
deformities (birth defects) or developmental deformities (i.e. damaged from injury, infection, disease, surgery, etc.). Reconstructive surgery options include droopy upper eyelids (ptosis repair); thyroid eye disease (Grave’s ophthalmopathy); eyelid malposition, entropion and ectropion; eyelid reconstruction; eyelid lesions and skin cancer; orbital tumors and fractures; and blocked tear ducts.
Nonsurgical Rejuvenation: When you smile, laugh, frown, or look puzzled, you contract the muscles of your face. Over time, these contractions produce permanent furrows and deep wrinkles in the skin, especially around the eyes and mouth, between the eyebrows, and on the forehead. Options to fix these issues include skin tightening with fractional CO2 laser and Botox and fillers treatments.
Consultants in Ophthalmic & Facial Plastic Surgery has multiple locations around metro Detroit including Southfield, Livonia, Troy, Novi, and Southgate. They also have locations in Flint. ■

The Michigan Institute for Neurological Disorders is among Michigan’s leading providers of neurological care for the full range of disorders of the brain, spine, and nervous system. It provides cutting-edge diagnosis, treatment, management, and research when it comes to neurological disorders. Patients receive individualized care to help improve their symptoms and quality of life.
Founded in 1969, MIND has become one of the largest and most comprehensive private neurological practices in Michigan. While times and technologies have changed in the past 50 years, the Michigan Institute for Neurological Disorders hasn’t compromised its core set of values, which focus on providing first-rate care. The MIND team of 35 providers, who are experts in their field, offers compassionate, complete care for neurological disorders. On-site diagnostics include two wide-bore MRIs calibrated through the latest technology
to produce high-quality images with shorter scan times for electrodiagnostics (EEG, EMG, OCT), as well as infusion and pain management services. Specialists treat multiple sclerosis, headaches/facial pain, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease/memory disorders, Parkinson’s disease/movement disorders, muscular dystrophies, and epilepsy, along with other neurological conditions.
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has recognized MIND’s Multiple Sclerosis Center as a Center for Comprehensive MS Care. It’s one of the largest private MS centers in the country, caring for more than 5,000 patients per year. The MS Center was developed to provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and supportive services to multiple sclerosis patients and their families.
To help address one of the most common disorders of the central nervous system, MIND established its Headache & Facial Pain Center, which helps identify and treat frequent headache
and facial pain that often results in the loss of productivity, disability, and poor quality of life.
The Michigan Institute of Neurological Disorders provides care closer to home for patients, making expert treatment easier and more accessible without the need to visit a hospital. Beyond regular hours, evening and Saturday appointments are available. MIND’s full-service headquarters is in Farmington Hills, and there are also offices in Roseville and Dearborn Heights. ■

Jeffrey Margolis, M.D., board-certified in medical oncology and part of Oakland Medical Group/Michigan Healthcare Professionals Clinical Hematology & Medical Oncology, is at the forefront of cancer research and treatment.
Telling someone they have cancer is never easy, but what helps ease the pain and relieve some of the shock and anxiety is when the diagnosis is accompanied with answers, solutions, and a positive outlook. Dr. Margolis has had to give plenty of patients difficult news during his 24 years in medicine, but he says that what’s changed over time is the increase in positive solutions that are now included with the diagnosis.
“In the past we would be trying to get people more time, but now we’re focused on meaningful cures that allow people to get back to living and doing what they want to do,” he says. “What we’re doing now is targeting what’s best for the patient, what type of treatment they can tolerate, and what side effects they can manage — and then coming up with a treatment that best fits their profile and their goals. We identify very specific types of cancers. These types of cancers have their own specific treatments, and it’s making a huge difference.
“One of the things we’re doing today is more personalized medicine,” Dr. Margolis continues. “We’re doing special genetic molecular testing on everybody’s tumor. We used to just say you have lung cancer, but now we find out what driver mutations there are and we target things to that mutation. Treatments are no longer generic; they’re tumor-specific.”
Another example of whole-patient care is offering Cold Caps/Scalp Cooling Systems at infusion centers located throughout metro Detroit. And when fertility preservation is the goal of a patient, options are discussed.
Michigan Healthcare Professionals is the largest private practice in Michigan and focuses on multiple specialties including medical oncology, surgical oncology, and radiation oncology.
The Royal Oak office recently moved to a new suite in the Rose Cancer Center in Royal Oak. The state-of-the-art suite is patient-focused and has a larger capacity to better serve community members. ■

Patient care extends far beyond the scope of traditional oral healthcare at Nemeth & Katranji Periodontics. Dr. Joseph Nemeth and Dr. Amar Katranji specialize in treating gum disease, gum recession, and providing dental implant services—the optimal solution for missing teeth. The office is also world-renowned for its bad breath treatment center and cosmetic smile procedures.
Dr. Nemeth coined the phrase, “Healthy mouth, healthier body!” due to the connection between gum disease and other systemic illnesses, including Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. As board-certified periodontists, Drs. Nemeth and Katranji are widely respected by their peers and dental industry leaders for their groundbreaking advancements.
Known as a trailblazer in periodontics, Dr. Joseph Nemeth has served patients for over thirty years. His practice was the first to treat gum disease in the state of Michigan using advanced laser technology. Dr. Nemeth is also the first periodontist in the world certified for the advanced pinhole technique, which is a minimally invasive treatment for gum recession.
Dr. Amar Katranji earned a reputation as one of the area’s leading experts in handling complex dental implant cases. He is published in several prestigious professional journals and lectures locally and internationally on periodontalrelated topics.
Nemeth & Katranji Periodontics is located in Southfield, Michigan. Patients travel from all over the world to receive the finest and most advanced periodontal care. For a comprehensive list of services or to schedule an appointment, visit drnemeth.com or call our office at 248-357-3100. ■
Need your teeth cleaned? Does your child need braces? Do you want a brighter smile?
Where do you begin? Knowing that Hour Detroit readers want the best for themselves and their families, we poll dental professionals to help us determine the top professionals in their fields. General dentists, orthodontists, periodontists, and other specialists were asked which local dentist they would choose for a member of their immediate family. The results — listed by specialty — are below.
Note: Once the ballots were returned, each nominee was carefully evaluated on the basis of the survey results, the legitimacy of their license, and their current standing with the Michigan State Dental Board.

Daia Orthodontics & TMJ Orthopedics is responsible for many beautiful smiles in southeast Michigan. The Rochester Hills practice was founded in 1975 by Dr. William Molloy, a phenomenal orthodontist who recently retired. Dr. Molloy passed the torch in 2016 to Dr. Hadi Daia, an internationally acclaimed orthodontist, a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, and a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and the American Board of Orofacial Pain. After Dr. Daia published his book, “Low Level Laser Therapy for Management of Temporomandibular Disorders,” in 2011 compiling years of research and clinical trials, he entered the practice of orthodontics.
“A smile can change our lives,” says Dr. Daia. “It is our introduction to impress at a job interview, a date, a graduation and walking down the aisle! We want to make this process as easy and efficient as possible in a fun environment operated by enthusiastic, experienced and gifted professionals.”
The facility at Daia Orthodontics & TMJ Orthopedics utilizes cutting-edge technologies to provide precise diagnosis and personalized, comprehensive treatment plans unique for every patient. As one of Invisalign’s Top 1% Diamond Provider and an expert in digital orthodontics, Dr. Daia and his team are equipped to offer several treatment modalities including discrete, clear aligners.
If you are struggling with TMJ, jaw pain, burning mouth syndrome or headaches, your consultation would be focused on navigating the complexities of the jaw, head and neck parafunction on neuromuscular and orthopedic approaches.
Dr. Daia invites you to schedule an evaluation to get a beautiful, healthy, functional smile. ■

Dr. Amanda M. Sheehan feels a sense of pride and satisfaction when one of her patients walks out the door of Oakland Family Dental with a lifechanging smile. “I’m proud to help patients regain their confidence,” she says.
Since opening Oakland Family Dental in Waterford in 2016, she’s made it her mission to treat patients with care and compassion from the moment they walk in the door until they flash their new, confident smile. Oakland Family Dental offers a full slate of services: general dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics, sleep dentistry, sedation dentistry, and dental implants.
Dr. Sheehan is known for her dedication to education; she graduated summa cum laude from Franklin Pierce College, received her doctorate from SUNY at Buffalo, and received her certificate in dental oncology from the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in 2012. She’s the recipient of a Diplomate in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, and the American Board of Oral Implantology. She’s also among the few dentists in North America who have achieved a Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry, and she holds the title of Faculty Director at the Resnik Implant Institute, where she mentors colleagues on implant surgery and prosthetics. Most recently, she became the first female dentist in Michigan to obtain board certification in implants. By continuously proving her dedication to her field and her patients, Dr. Sheehan has established herself as one of Michigan’s premier dental providers. ■

Dr. Dolores Baran is a well respected dentist – and for good reason. While her educational credentials and professional accomplishments are quite remarkable, it’s the care she offers and the results she achieves that make her stand out.
Dr. Baran, a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, is a highly skilled dentist who has earned recognition and accolades throughout her career. She is also a kind, warm and caring person whom many of her patients call a friend.
In addition, she has also been active with charities over the years and has brought lifechanging smiles to women who were victims of Hurricane Katrina, and to those seeking shelter and support through Lighthouse in the wake of domestic abuse and displacement. She continues to be involved with the Judson Center of Royal Oak, helping children with special needs.
Dr. Baran and her entire team provide state-of the-art cosmetic and general dental services to give patients a healthy, dazzling smile. “When treatment is diagnosed, not only is the function in mind important, but the cosmetic aspect as well to make sure it all looks great,” she says. “Our dentists and team utilize advanced technology, including same-day crowns and fully customized care to provide a comfortable experience with high-quality results. We also see emergencies on the same day and, if possible, do treatment on the same day.” Everyone’s time is valuable, and we try to make the most of it.
Dr. Baran also treats patients with migraine headaches using Botox. Many who do not get relief or don’t want to use medications have been getting great results with these injections. Royal Oak Smiles offers a full line of services, including Invisalign (invisible braces) restorative work, tooth gems, implants, wisdom teeth, sleep apnea, and sedation in many cases. ■

The professionals at Golnick Pediatric & Adolescent Dentistry P.C. have never had a reason to advertise or market their practice because of their long standing reputation, focus and commitment to preventive dental care that sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles for every child.
“The Pediatricians of Dentistry” - Dr. Andreina Castro, Dr. Sam Blanchard, Dr. Danny Kalash, Dr. Madison Fantin, Dr. Dina Tanbakuchi, Dr. Chad Zilich and Dr. Jason Golnick - are experts in dental care for infants, children, adolescents and special needs individuals. All of the doctors have extensive training in child development and behavior management and are active in organized dentistry and the community.
“The number of young patients requiring dentistry has always been intimidating and the needs are increasing,” says Dr. Golnick, who joined Golnick Pediatric Dental Associates in 1994 and worked alongside his father, Dr. Arnold Golnick, the founder of the practice for many years. “With limited pediatric dental practitioners available and an increasing demand for exceptional care for children, our greatest challenge is to accommodate and schedule patients efficiently. We value all our patients’ time and are committed to delivering excellent customer care and optimal results.”
Golnick Pediatric & Adolescent Dentistry P.C. uses the latest advancements in dental equipment and technology available at each location where patients are treated comfortably using nitrous oxide, conscious oral sedation, IV sedation or under general anesthesia. Laser therapy is also available for lip and tongue ties and dental treatment without the indication for local anesthesia.
Dr. Golnick is a C.S. Mott Fellow in Pediatric Dentistry and has served as an adjunct clinical professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics at the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry. He also is an active staff member of Corewell Health and is past President of the Michigan Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. ■

One of the first Google reviews of Degenhardt Dental in Troy perfectly sums up the longtime and highly respected practice: “The staff is like a family and patients are treated with care and kindness.”
It’s the Degenhardt Difference and it’s been that way since Dr. Ted Degenhardt (Dr. D) opened Degenhardt Dental in 1979. Later, two of his sons, Christopher Degenhardt DDS, and Stephen Degenhardt DDS, MS, joined the practice.
Dr. Chris Degenhardt is a graduate of Detroit Mercy’s School of Dentistry, is a current member of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, and has received post graduate training in Cosmetic, Implant, CAD-CAM and Sleep Dentistry. Dr Chris believes in using the latest technology to help provide the best dentistry has to offer while creating your perfect smile.
Dr. Ted Degenhardt, has been practicing
general and cosmetic dentistry for over 40 years and is a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. An important focus of his practice is providing oral appliance therapy to patients who suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and snoring.
Dr. Steve Degenhardt is a board-certified orthodontist and is passionate about clear aligner treatment (Invisalign) for both adults and adolescents. He attended Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and completed his orthodontic residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Degenhardt Dental’s state-of-the-art technology combined with their team’s passion for continuing education gives them great pride in delivering the gold standard of care to their patients.
“We recognize patients have many choices in healthcare these days, and it is our goal to exceed their expectations,” said Dr. Chris. “Over the
years, our practice has cared for patients, their children and now we are seeing the next generation of families. We invite you to experience the Degenhardt Difference!” ■
How many times have you heard friends say that they only got relief from their back problem after they saw a chiropractor? They’ve tried medication, back-strengthening exercises, injections, and maybe even surgery. Yet once they were under the care of a chiropractor, their whole outlook changed. Public interest in complementary and alternative medicine has risen in the past several decades, and chiropractors are a natural choice for addressing many issues that affect overall health.
Hour Detroit’s Top Chiropractors list is based on a peer-review survey conducted by Professional Research Services (PRS). Participants cast thousands of votes honoring excellence in chiropractic services. Professionals are screened and selected through the verification of licensing and review of any infractions through various applicable boards, agencies, and rating services. Inclusion in the listings cannot be purchased. It is solely the result of PRS’s research. For additional information, visit prscom.com or email PRS at info@prscom.com.

Tried Physical Therapy? Medication? Surgery? Injections? Robotic Precision Therapy Clinic Can Help!
Robotic Precision Therapy Clinic (RPT Clinic) uses a state-of-the-art robotic therapy unit to treat individuals who are experiencing pain, to help relieve pain and improve their range of motion. A therapeutic robot called the RX2600 is used to administer gentle pressure in intervals to a specific muscle. This process relaxes muscles, helps restore structural balance, and relieves aches and pains.
Patients often come to RPT Clinic after seeking relief for months, or even years. They’ve tried medication, injections, stretching, exercises, massage, or surgery, and many of them have resigned themselves to living a life ruled by pain and discomfort. RPT Clinic is committed to helping their patients find healing and wholeness.
Muscles can become shortened over time from injury or repetitive motion. This shortening can create imbalances, pulling your body out of proper alignment and leading to a lack of mobility as well as pain. Lengthening
muscles helps take tension off the bone structure and increases mobility, while simultaneously decreasing aches and pains.
RPT Can Help:
• Headaches • Migraines • Neck Pain • Shoulder
Pain • Back Pain
• Carpal Tunnel
• Cerebral Palsy
• Knee Pain
• Sciatica • TMJ
• Scoliosis
• Multiple Sclerosis
• Fibromyalgia • Bunions
• Shin Splints • Plantar Fasciitis • Sports Injuries
• Improved Mobility • Golf Swing • Poor Posture • … and much more!
Sports Performance Enhancement
At RPT Clinic, innovation meets athleticism to elevate sports performance to unprecedented heights. Their advanced robotic therapy, together with personalized therapeutic interventions, creates a tailored experience that caters to the unique needs of each athlete.
At the heart of the clinic is a team of skilled professionals who collaborate seamlessly with cutting-edge robotic technologies. These precision tools allow for targeted and nuanced therapeutic interventions that focus on
enhancing flexibility, strength, and overall athletic performance. From rehabilitation to performance optimization, RPT Clinic employs robotic assistance to provide athletes with a level of precision and consistency unattainable through traditional methods alone.
RPT Clinic is located in Troy, one block west of Somerset Mall. Their knowledgeable therapists are ready to help you effectively address the source of your pain and improve your mobility.

MOST METRO DETROITERS are familiar with the name William Beaumont, but do you know his claim to fame and his connection to Michigan? The Connecticut native, known as the “father of gastric physiology,” was the first person to observe and study human digestion as it occurs in the stomach. It all started on Mackinac Island.
The painting above — Dean Cornwell’s “Beaumont and St. Martin” — is a stylized depiction of Beaumont during his time serving as a U.S. Army surgeon at Fort Mackinac on the island (1820-25). According to the Mackinac State Historic Parks, Alexis St. Martin, a French Canadian voyageur, was the victim of an accidental shooting, and as a result, large portions of his left side were blown off and the inside of his stomach was exposed. Incredibly, Beaumont managed to save his life. Although the wound healed, he was left with an opening into the stomach. Fascinated with this case, Beaumont, in 1824, peered into this hole and took note of how food broke down in St. Martin’s stomach, later beginning experimentation that continued until 1833. These groundbreaking experiments led to major advancements in the understanding of digestion. While controversial, Beaumont was recognized internationally for his contributions to medicine.
This painting was one of eight pieces in Cornwell’s Pioneers of American Medicine collection. The collection was commissioned by Wyeth Laboratories in 1938 to commemorate the progress made by American medical heroes such as Beaumont. The original painting was loaned to Mackinac Island’s Dr. Beaumont Museum in the 1960s until it was returned to Wyeth in 1999. —Will Reaume
