TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, THE WEDDING SHOPPE FOUNDER TOOK A CHANCE ON HER DREAMS. THE GAMBLE PAID OFF.
by juliana lumaj
WHO KNEW A 20-minute phone call could set the trajectory for the next 25 years of your life? Royal Oak native Michelle McFarland knew corporate America wasn’t for her, and after getting married in 1998 and watching the rest of her friends and co-workers also get married, she thought “maybe there’s something to this wedding thing.”
While working at Thyssen Steel’s U.S. headquarters at the Renaissance Center as a cash manager, she flipped through a bridal magazine she grabbed during her lunch break at a convenience store downstairs, stumbling upon an advertisement for a headpiece company. She called the number and spoke to a kind woman for about 20 minutes, who “taught me so much in that short phone call that I thought, ‘Oh my gosh. I think I can do this. I think I can open my own bridal accessory store,’” McFarland says.
And in December 1999, she did.
McFarland opened The Wedding Shoppe in Royal Oak as a bridal accessories store that offered everything from veils to shoes to jewelry and invitations. Her sister, Danielle Simone, quit her job to help her run the store.
In 2008, since they were already doing bridal alterations, she thought “Why don’t we sell dresses?” She says that’s when her business “really took off.”
Since then, The Wedding Shoppe moved to its current location in Berkley, has grown to a team of 30, about 20 of which are stylists, and sells about 2,000 dresses a year. She says her success comes from taking the time to understand the individual needs of each bride that walks through the door.
“What can be challenging is realizing that not everybody loves the same thing, and that’s why getting to know [the bride] is so important,” McFarland says. “Having those conversations and listening and getting to know someone as a person makes a big difference.”
Those conversations led to The Wedding Shoppe expanding their availability in sizes and becoming metro Detroit’s largest selection of wedding gowns with sizes 0 to 38.
The dresses they offer, which include couture, off-the-rack, and plus-size collections, are hand-selected by McFarland and her team at bridal markets in different cities, like New York and Chicago, and are sold at various price points, some as low as $300 and others at $13,000.
For 2025, The Wedding Shoppe has been stocking up on the latest trends, including elegant crepe dresses, large ball gowns, dresses with basque waists, and touches of black, like black gloves and bows. Some designers they consistently reach for include Rivini and Colby John.
McFarland thanks her customers who have helped grow The Wedding Shoppe’s popularity through word-of-mouth recommendations, and says they’ve had brides visit from all over to try on their dresses, including Hawaii.
Since starting her business 25 years ago, McFarland has had three children, whom occasionally help at the store, and she can’t “imagine what my life would be like if I hadn’t been brave enough to take the leap and start the business.”

ISLAND I DO
Mackinac Island’s renovated The Inn at Stonecliffe is one of the world’s greatest places — to have a wedding
When you envision a destination wedding on an island, northern Michigan may not be your first thought. Yet The Inn at Stonecliffe on Mackinac Island may just be the perfect spot. Included in Time’s 2024 list of the “World’s Greatest Places,” this recently renovated 1904 estate has charm, elegance, privacy, and several breathtaking options for your nuptials and reception.
Sunset Pavilion has a 3,072 square-foot interior and seats 150 for a dinner seating and 200 for a standing reception. Their outdoor patio (not shown) is 900 square feet. The food served comes from The Inn at Stonecliff’s in-house team, who also prepare meals for their fine dining restaurant.
Located on the West Bluff of the island, The Inn is far enough away from the bustle of “downtown” to make you feel like you’re on a private retreat. In fact, the 45-minute taxi ride (a horse-drawn carriage) from the ferry terminal (with arrivals from Mackinaw City and St. Ignace) is just the right amount of time for you to relax, catch your breath, and ease into your stay.
The Inn’s over $40 million renovation is well worth the two-year wait. Previously, the mansion, which was built for Chicago’s Michael Cudahy, who made his money in the meatpacking industry, had a darkwood interior. Now it is all white — with careful detail in preserving the historic charm, including the moldings and fireplaces — and has features that
bring the outdoors in. These include guest room windows with expansive views of the Straits of Mackinac and an outdoor dining area with clear plastic shades to shield you from the elements on windy or rainy days and nights.
The Inn at Stonecliffe has a variety of settings to choose from for your ceremony and reception, including the Straits Lawn (water-facing with a view of the Mackinac Bridge), the North Lawn (located in the front of the property with towering trees and bridal paths and the mansion as the backdrop), The Grotto (a charming area surrounded by lush greenery, flowers, and a fountain), and Sunset Pavilion, a 3,000-square-foot space with indoor and outdoor options. The food at your reception will be prepared by The Inn’s in-house team, who work

in tandem to provide not only meals for The Inn’s restaurant, The Straits, but also curated meals for all its private events.
Last August, Michael Luciani, who grew up in Birmingham, and Allie Jensen, of Washington, D.C., tied the knot at Stonecliffe. They’re among the first couples to revel in the resort’s beauty since its renovation. “A wedding at The Inn at Stonecliffe is a fairy-tale dream come true,” says Michael’s mother, Leslie Luciani, who with her family owns Original Murdick’s Fudge (the fudge shop has

several locations on Mackinac Island and in Mackinaw City and St. Ignace). “Their reception on the great lawn with the view of the Mackinac Bridge was spectacular,” says Leslie, of Birmingham. “And the attention to detail and high level of service was perfect in every way.” Luciani’s family and friends stayed on the property for the weekend. “We felt like we had our own private slice of Mackinac Island.” As far as lodging, the wedding party and guests have many options. The mansion itself has 16 beautifully renovated guest rooms, each with a

unique view. (The most requested are rooms with balconies showcasing the lake views.) There is also the Summer House, with 36 rooms (including suites), and three private cottages, each with 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, a full kitchen, a patio, and a spacious living area. There is also an adults-only pool and a family pool on The Inn’s property.
Other buildings on the property include a general store, a wellness center (with a spa, fitness equipment, and a sauna), The Backyard restaurant, and a bicycle pavilion, where you can rent a bike and take a loop around the island or a short ride downtown to visit shops, dine at restaurants, or catch a tour.
The Inn at Stonecliffe has a list of vendors for you to work with to make your wedding complete, including wedding coordinators, photographers, florists, musicians/DJs, stationery suppliers, and more. It is suggested that those wishing to book a wedding reach out to The Inn at least nine to 12 months in advance, or sooner.
“There are many aspects of planning a wedding on Mackinac Island that are not within the norm,” says Jenna Holland, director of sales, “so many brides want to get an even bigger head start on planning the wedding of their dreams!”
From top: Every guest who attends the wedding will feel like they are in a fairy tale when they arrive at the mansion in a horse-drawn taxi; you’ll find gorgeous flora and fauna everywhere on the estate; cyclists head out from the property, through the entrance gate, and to the paths around the island.

The Homestead
Two beautiful bays join to form Sleeping Bear Point, which is located 450 feet above a beach that’s on National Geographic’s list of the 21 Best Beaches in the World. Around the point are 70,000 acres of land and 65 miles of shoreline that make up the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
At the edge of the lakeshore is a town small enough to be charming, yet large enough to house The Homestead, a resort with a mile of frontage on Sleeping Bear Bay and several more on the Crystal River. The resort features two wedding venues, a spa, salon, golf, pools, restaurants, and gracious accommodations.
In this setting, unique weddings are common. They take place in the area chosen by viewers of Good Morning America as the “Most Beautiful Place in America.” And, they are in facilities with the grandeur that belongs on the shore of a great lake that’s inside a national park.

French Valley Vineyard
The Barn at French Valley Vineyard is nestled among the grapes and cherry trees on 70 sprawling acres in the heart of Leelanau County. In a recent five-star review, one couple who held their rehearsal dinner in the tasting room, their ceremony in the vineyard and orchards, and their reception in The Barn — had this to say about their experience: “[The French Valley] crew could not have been more helpful. … They were professional and went out of their way to help in every way. Bellisario Florist
Third-generation family business offers full-service event planning
The Bellisario family operates its floral and special events business out of a 10,000-square-foot warehouse and showroom in Eastpointe, but in the late 1940s, the floral shop was in Grandma’s basement on Detroit’s east side.
“My dad, Peter Bellisario, started a floral business in the house he lived in when he was 17. He had two refrigerators and went door-to-door to sell and book weddings,” says Ralph Bellisario, who operates Bellisario Florist along with his mother, Lorraine; his niece Jennie; his sister Josie; and staff.
Peter and his wife, Lorraine, built the business while raising a family, and more than 75 years later, it is still a family business. “We have second and third generations of families now. My grandfather did flowers for the grandmother’s wedding, then confirmations, graduations, and her daughter’s wedding, and now we are planning her granddaughter’s wedding,” Jennie says. “It’s very satisfying.”
What hasn’t changed at all is the personalized service that’s offered. Ralph and Jennie book every special occasion and oversee every event. Although they have a team of designers and work with the best local vendors, Ralph or Jennie always ensures that a client’s day is perfect.
The only thing that has changed in 75 years is that Bellisario now offers full planning services in addition to being a full- service florist. “When a bride comes to us, we can get the flowers, linens, chairs, tables, fine china, flatware, whatever she needs. There’s no need to go from place to place,” Ralph says.
Jennie says most brides come in with a vision or inspiration — either colors they like or magazine pictures — and Bellisario takes it from there. All that’s needed is the budget to work within, and the work is done.
“A lot of florists and planners have a minimum, but we don’t. We will plan from small to elaborate and keep it within budget,” Ralph says.
Keeping ahead of trends is something the Bellisario family knows customers appreciate. Bellisario will design your event like no other, whether it’s ultramodern, over-the-top luxurious, or the simple elegance of fine china
on wood tables. In addition to weddings, Bellisario is known for its work at corporate events, showers, holiday parties, televised appearances, and the North American International Auto Show. They cover the entire tri-country area and also do many out-of-town destination weddings.
For brides who know exactly what they want, the reviews often sound like this: “I cannot thank you enough for the beautiful flowers you put together for our wedding. I got so many compliments. I really appreciate all the time and effort you took to meet with me, along with emails, texts, and pictures to make sure everything was just right. You went above and beyond, and I will never forget you!” ■

window dressing
NOSTALGIA HAS ALWAYS been a powerful marketing tool. This image, captured in 1956, was taken nearly seven decades ago, and features a display depicting bridal fashion trends from another seven or so decades back.
To commemorate 75 years of business, J. L. Hudson’s put up window mannequin displays like this one, depicting an 1880s bride and groom, wearing 19th century-appropriate solemn expressions. Note the camera with black cloth covering.
At the time this photo was taken, the downtown Hudson’s was a one-stop shop for wedding needs. There was a bridal registry on the 10th and 3rd floors; a flower shop on the 4th floor; and Hudson’s Bake Shop on the first floor made and delivered custom wedding cakes. Wedding consultant Carolyn Chase (real name: Helen Harrold) offered married-couplesto-be free advice on just about every step of the ceremony — planning, procedure, and even etiquette — plus, according to a 1956 Detroit Free Press advertisement, any of “those what-should-we-do questions that may be puzzling you.”
