the new normal
WHILE THE LAST YEAR HAS BEEN challenging (to put it mildly), the havoc wreaked by the pandemic on the wedding industry does have a silver lining: Weddings have become more intimate, personal, and inventive. In the face of adversity, couples — and their vendors — have gotten creative, reimagining what weddings look like and how we celebrate one of life’s most precious milestones. We celebrate that spirit of reinvention and “turning lemons into lemonade” in the pages of this issue, particularly in the stories of two couples whose wedding days were nothing like what they originally envisioned. Early in the pandemic, Alejandra and Jacopo Cavallari Montenegro (page 32) made the difficult decision to cancel their Mexican destination wedding and instead exchanged vows in a small church ceremony while their friends and family watched on Zoom. Later, the couple worked with a dream team of vendors to stage a picture-perfect reenactment of the reception that might have been. Meanwhile, Corinne Rockoff and Alicia Basin (page 64) found a solution that gave them the best of both worlds — they rescheduled their big wedding for 2021 and hosted a small, intimate fête in the backyard of Basin’s childhood home. As Rockoff says, she and Basin
feel lucky because “most people only get to do this once.”
Whether, like Rockoff and Basin, you are planning a second commemoration of your marriage, or your very first, this issue is filled with inspiration for designing your dream day. In “A Feast for the Eyes” (page 58), five local planners show how a beautifully set table can set the tone for your entire celebration. In our Details section (page 13) we introduce you to some need-to-know brands and vendors, from The Petite Wedding Collective, a group of wedding pros who came together to offer beautifully designed bespoke micro weddings, to Melissa Butler, whose cosmetics brand The Lip Bar is breaking barriers in the beauty world and beyond. Finally, our cover story, “Modern Love” (page 36), perfectly embodies the current moment (and can I just say how fantastic it felt to be back on set with our team doing what we love most?!). The clean lines, sleek silhouettes, and statement details of the luxe-minimalist gowns featured in this story have a purity and simplicity that reflect the current movement toward smaller, more intimate, deeply personal — and simply lovely — celebrations of everlasting love.

CELEBRATE YOUR WEDDING, YOUR WAY
written by giuseppa nadrowskipetite wedding collective
LAST SPRING THE WEDDING industry came to a grinding halt. Events of all sizes were postponed, many even canceled due to the pandemic. And while restrictions did eventually loosen, large events were still not feasible. However, small gatherings, which were once again permitted, could be held safely. Those in the event industry like Cassy Anderson, of Cassy Rose Events, were trying to anticipate and meet these emerging needs. “I had all these clients that had planned really large events for 2020, and obviously those were not happening,” she says.
That’s when Anderson partnered with photographer Sean Cook, of Sean Cook Weddings, to launch The Petite Wedding Collective — a group of industry-leading creatives helping couples create bespoke design-forward, intimate celebrations.
“For us at The Petite Wedding Collective, the idea was to meet that market need without compromising any of the design ideas or the creative process that goes into producing some of these events. We wanted to create what felt like a pretty all-inclusive experience that didn’t also put you into a box,” Anderson says. “What we were finding initially was that even if people were postponing the big event until 2021, they still wanted to get married, so we decided we would focus on producing really elegant ceremonies … and we would be customizing it every single time, for every single client.” These all-inclusive ceremonies, which account for up to 30 guests, come complete with beautiful photography, a string quartet, lush florals, high-end rentals, a hair and makeup artist, custom invitations, and even a designer cake.
What was most important for Anderson was that her clients did not compromise in having a smaller
celebration. Each event would be unique, personal, and custom to the couple, and they would still have that experience of planning their wedding from start to finish. “My clients tend to book me because they want something different, want something a little more custom, something a little more unique, something a little more refined, and that was not going to change,” she says. While the guest counts were scaled back, the design and the process of the event would not be.
“We wanted to take a lot of the guess work out of [wedding planning].
Bringing you the crème de la crème creative team but also allowing you to really indulge in the fun stuff that is still a part of wedding planning — just on a smaller scale,” she says.
Together, Anderson and Cook set out to create a team that would deliver. The collective now includes Natalia Januszewski of Violet Rose Floral, Heather Leavitt of Sweet Heather Anne Cakes, Michelle Kulwicki of White Pines Entertainment, Aimee Paquin of Modernly Events & Specialty Rentals, Andreea Bona of Glam by Andreea, and Angela Kaufman of Plume & Proper Designs.
“What I love about all these folks is they really do come to every event with fresh eyes and fresh ideas,” she says. Each couple receives full-design consultations with each of these outstanding vendors, with Anderson overseeing the planning and the creative direction of the event.
For Anderson, these intimate celebrations are “an untapped creative opportunity.” Having a smaller count allows the couple to do things that just aren’t possible with a few hundred guests — from utilizing meaningful spaces for the ceremony (like a childhood home or the park where the couple first met) to really personalizing the experience so that it’s not only unique for the couple but for each guest. “It just really becomes about the people that are there,” she says.
Having a scaled-back guest list “really gives you an opportunity to be present, and really gives you the opportunity to take in the day as a whole.” Anderson adds, “It really becomes more about the shared experience with that group of people.”

Brides can also stock up on PPE for their celebration with a 10-pack of masks from Birdy Grey, which encourages your guests to Spread Love, Not Germs. written by rebecca voigt photography by hayden stinebaughWITH SMALLER GUEST COUNTS
the new normal thanks to the pandemic, couples are turning to unique experiences to create memorable moments with their nearest and dearest. The Whiskey Factory — steeped in history and offering artisanal craft cocktails sure to satisfy even the most discerning connoisseur — is a prime destination for an unforgettable celebration.
Located in a historic building in the heart of Detroit that was once home to Goebel’s Brewery and Stroh’s Ice Cream, The Whiskey Factory is Detroit City Distillery’s mixed-use event space. In additional to hosting everything from bachelor parties to wedding receptions for up to 250 people, it is also a distillery that works around the clock to craft small batch artisanal whiskies, gins, and vodkas.
The fact that The Whiskey Factory is a working distillery is enough to set the stage for a unique wedding experience, and the beverage options raise the bar (pun intended) even more. After selecting one of two main spirits packages — The Riopelle Tasting Room Experience includes the full seasonal menu from Detroit City Distillery’s Eastern Market tasting room, and the Artisanal Batch Cocktail Experience includes a curated selection of three batch cocktails — couples can choose from several add-on beverage services, such as a whiskey tasting or bespoke gin & tonic bar. Couples who plan ahead (six months for gin or one year for whiskey) can even add bespoke spirits production and create their own unique blend to serve at their nuptials or give to their guests as the ultimate wedding favor.
Packages start at $40 per person for the first four hours. To learn more, visit whiskeyfactorydetroit.com.

BIRMINGHAM’S DAXTON HOTEL OPENS ITS DOORS FOR ULTRALUXE WEDDING CELEBRATIONS
written by rebecca voigtIT’S UNDENIABLE THAT the metro Detroit hotel scene has elevated its game over the last few years. Chic properties such as the Detroit Foundation Hotel, the Shinola Hotel, and The Siren Hotel have brought a new level of design and luxury to the market — and given couples a wealth of options for hosting unforgettable wedding celebrations. The Daxton Hotel is the latest entry into the local hotel scene and promises to be one of the poshest yet.
Located on Woodward Avenue in downtown Birmingham and set to open its doors in February, the $60 million Daxton Hotel is a minimalist-luxe masterpiece by local entrepreneur Mark Mitchell. The 151-room hotel, named for Mitchell’s son, boasts a nearly 400-piece art collection curated by Saatchi Art; a flagship restaurant, Madam, helmed by renowned chef Garrison Price; and stunning event spaces for groups as large as 300.
Couples who wed or hold a reception at the Daxton can also look forward to Insta-perfect backdrops galore for their event photography. Vibrant colors flood spaces throughout the hotel, including a chartreuse lobby, lavender parlors, and deep burgundy guestrooms with scrim headboard backdrops created by famed local muralist Ouizi (brides — just imagine the getting ready photos).
Mitchell says, most important will be the hotel’s commitment to a high level of service provided by the hotel and event staff who will be dedicated to exceeding the expectations of discerning couples at every turn. “Daxton will set a hospitality standard far beyond the Midwest, and it is an absolute privilege to deliver a project that will be an important aspect of Birmingham’s fabric for generations to come,” Mitchell says.

MODERN CALLIGRAPHY AND LETTERING STUDIO AVAILA + CO. BRINGS BESPOKE DETAILS TO YOUR WEDDING DAY
written by giuseppa nadrowskiROMANTIC, ORGANIC AND JUST gorgeous — Dyonna White, owner of metro Detroit-based lettering and design studio Availa + Co., is redefining the art of calligraphy with her modern and moody style. A quick scroll through White’s Instagram feed brings endless awe and wonderment with every swoop and swirl posted. From her work on hand-torn scroll place cards to return addresses that transform envelops into pieces of art, White is taking classic calligraphy into a decidedly modern direction.
Availa + Co., a combination of White’s two daughters’ names, Ava and Laila (“I always say that I am the ‘and company,’ ” White laughs), began two years ago. White was working in the corporate world when she decided she was looking for a way to pivot her career when she stumbled upon the art of calligraphy. “I have always been artistic,” she says. “I wanted to do something that creatively inspired me and gave me purpose. But also, something that I could do that would provide for my girls.”
And that’s when Availa + Co. was born. Today, White specializes in modern calligraphy and lettering. Her work graces everything from paper to glass and even mirrors and agate slices.
“Anything that can be written on, I will write on it,” White says. To create truly one-of-kind details, White offers bespoke calligraphy where she
collaborates with local makers who handcraft their own papers.
While in the past calligraphy was often associated with formal invitations, at Availa + Co. calligraphy is so much more. From glass bottle table numbers to beautifully addressed envelopes, White believes calligraphy can add a unique element to an event that makes it truly special.
“This year there has been a lot of changes in what weddings look like,” she says. “I have been really lucky to have been able to participate in some very intimate weddings, really focusing on that detail aspect that lets everyone that you love know that you are happy they
are there and included. Calligraphy really gives an added personal touch that is unique to the couple and wedding.”
When working with couples, White draws on their love story and their history to elevate and bring that personalization to each detail she creates. Whether she’s using brush lettering or modern calligraphy, the possibilities in style and feel are endless.
“I aim to really bring emotion and warmth to my work,” White says. “I feel like a lot of times that’s missing when it comes to stationery ... Some may say it’s just paper, but it’s really not. I’m working with brands that are handmaking these papers in their homes or in their studios and they are taking the time and the care to create these wonderful products, and I’m taking the time and care to write on these wonderful products … It’s like a circle of life. I try to show that. I try to shine a light, shine some warmth and some romance onto these details.”

lipstick with no limits
written by lyndsay green photography by marvin shaouni“YOU’RE RUNNING THIS successful company — don’t you want to get married?” Yes, it’s 2021 and Melissa Butler, founder of The Lip Bar, is still answering that antiquated question with a question of her own: “Why can’t I have a dynamic love life and a dynamic career at the same time?”
In 2012, Butler departed her career as a Wall Street stockbroker to launch a cosmetics company that would challenge the very notion that such questions imply: that women and the beauty industry are monolithic. That to be a lover of makeup is to be disinterested in politics, social justice, and other substantive conversations at the forefront of our
society. From its perch in the makeup department, The Lip Bar would be a brand that encouraged women to shatter these standards. “There are all these parameters that are set up for women,” Butler says. “So for us, it’s always been about challenging the standard as it relates to everything from makeup to voting. If you don’t like the representation — whether that’s not seeing enough diversity in the beauty category, or if you don’t like the way our country is run — you should be empowered enough to know that you matter enough to be able to make that change.”
With a line of products that complement a vast range of skin tones — the brand offers 16 (and counting) shades of nude lipstick and 26 foundation hues — The Lip Bar’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is evident. Butler has also launched initiatives, such as a partnership with Michelle Obama and When We All Vote, that encouraged voter registration in the 2020 election. And last June, Butler co-founded TheBlkPact, a nonprofit organization encouraging consumers to shop Black-owned businesses whenever possible. “We have to understand that as women, we have power even when the world is trying to convince us that we don’t,” she says.
It’s safe to say Butler has mastered the dynamic career part. The Lip Bar has grown to become an awardwinning, celeb favorite sold online and at major retailers, such as Target, with new products in development. “My favorite product that we’re launching in February is this highlighting skin serum that you can apply to your face for that no-makeup-makeup look that just gives you a slight glow,” Butler says. And with her eyes set on a dynamic wedding day down the line, Butler knows just the product she’ll turn to. “My future wedding is going to be on an island, and it’s going to turn right into a party vacation. I’ll be wearing Boy Trouble. It’s a fiery red, so it’s so much fun and tropical and fits into that scenery I plan on getting married in — plus, it’s a fun play on words.”

Bridal Beauty Tips
MAKE IT LAST.
Logistically speaking, if you’re getting your makeup done in the morning and planning to dance the night away, Butler says it’s important to choose products with staying power. “Our Quick Liquid Eye Shadows [$12 each] are really cool because once you put them on, they basically stay the whole day. It’s also the perfect eye shadow moment on a highly emotional day when you’re probably going to cry.”
KEEP IT FRESH.
Butler says The Lip Bar Skin Serum Foundation ($28) o ers the perfect finish for a bride seeking a natural look on her big day. “Our foundation allows you to look like you. It has hyaluronic acid, so your skin will look vibrant and healthy.”
PLAY AROUND.
“I’m excited to see women starting to be more expressive on their wedding day,” Butler says. Rather than the traditional nude lip, Butler has enjoyed seeing women embrace bold reds, such as The Lip Bar’s Liquid Matte lipstick in Boss Lady ($13), for their big day.
“People are taking a little bit more of a risk and showing their personality on their lips.”

A LOCAL FLORIST RISKS IT ALL TO FOLLOW HER DREAM
written by rebecca voigtBRANDI HIGGINBOTHAM’S LOVE
affair with flowers began in high school. She was working as a bagger at a grocery store — a perfect after-school job because it paid enough for her to attend football games on Friday nights. But then she was offered a position as an assistant in the floral department. Within a year and a half, she was managing the department while attending college, and it was clear Higginbotham had found her passion.
“I was in awe of how flowers made people feel and what a big role flowers play in so many milestones,” she says. “We see flowers used in weddings, funerals, ‘pick me ups,’ proms, homecomings, graduations, and more. I think there’s something that can be said about how flowers are so universal and are often seen used in monumental moments.”
Eventually, it became clear that
Higginbotham’s career with the grocery store ended with her current position, so she started taking on small weddings and events on the side while she plotted her next move. Then, in June 2017, she
officially launched her own full-service floral business, Lee Floral Design.
“Those small weddings and events opened the floodgates,” she says. “I left my retail position of 11 years, stopped attending college, and put my heart and soul into LFD.”
Since then, Higginbotham has channeled her “loose, organic, and full of texture” design aesthetic into stunning arrangements for her clients. Each project begins with a mood board that acts as inspiration for all of the items she will design, from boutonnieres to centerpieces. For the big day itself, Higginbotham and her team provide delivery, set up, take down, and rental items such as vases and candle ware. Along with wedding and event floral design, Lee Floral Design also offers workshops and other unique services, like floral subscriptions, dried wreaths, and evergreen wreaths. “I firmly believe in growing — personally and in a business sense — so we are continually evolving and trying new and exciting things,” she says.
When she first set out on her own, at the time Higginbotham says her actions were “the scariest and most out of character thing I have ever done.” But the risk has been well worth it. “Lee Floral Design is more than just a floral design business,” she says. “It was born from a burning passion. A passion for florals and a desire to be different.”

This trend is definitely inspired by the 1980s but with a tasteful, romantic vibe. Structured sleeves work best for the cotemporary bride, while billowy sleeves are ideal for the boho bride.

Whether it is lace or beading, this trend is exceptionally detailed and shows o exquisite handiwork. This trend is for classic and contemporary styles.

No one could have expected how much the world would change before their nuptials would — or could — take place.
But by early April, with word that the pandemic’s closures would extend into the fall, the couple decided to cancel their September event even though they would not receive a refund.
The couple then decided to marry on April 18 with plans to host a reception with their families at a later date.
Officiated by a priest, “we did a small wedding in a church,” Alejandra says. “We had all of our family on Zoom — from Mexico, Europe, and even friends from here.”
Jacopo, laughing, adds, “It was probably the biggest Zoom wedding.”
Not long after, Alejandra came across a Facebook post from a college friend, Nicole Lashar, owner of Nicole Leanne Photography, looking for a couple for a stylized wedding shoot. Alejandra thought it would be the perfect way to commemorate the reception they had to postpone. “She was looking for two models,” Alejandra says. “So that’s when I reached out to her. With everything that was happening, I told her that I would love to participate and be a part of this
amazing project.”
It was an easy choice for Lashar. “I wanted it to be meaningful for the couple so we chose Ale and Jacopo so that they could truly celebrate their marriage,” she says. “This opportunity was perfect for them as it allowed them to have those special moments of a wedding without the stress of planning.”
For Lashar, the idea for this shoot began as a way to stay creative through a season when weddings and events were being canceled and rescheduled. “This stylized elopement started with a passion to creatively capture a real couple in the metro Detroit area,” Lashar says. “I decided to collaborate with another photographer to create this styled wedding so that we could mesh our creativity and strengths together. Mallory, from Mallory Mae Photography, partnered with me to select the location, design the theme, and curate an incredible team of vendors.”
Hosted this summer at Eastern Market in downtown Detroit, the shoot and all its details were a surprise for Alejandra and Jacopo. “We didn’t know any of the colors. We didn’t know what to expect,” Alejandra says.
When they arrived, Lashar and her “dream team” of vendors had surpassed anything the couple could have imagined. “It was just beautiful,” Alejandra says. Not only was there a makeup artist
thanks to Tayler Your Events, but there were beautiful gowns from Ox & Opal, custom bands from Jewelry Set in Stone, a stunning designer cake from A-Mazion Cakes, romantic florals from Copper + Sage Collective, and custom stationery by The Ambrosia Rabbit. Social Happenings provided day-of coordinating and Northern Native Photography captured video. No detail was forgotten — there was even a table set for the newlyweds to share a toast.
“We wanted it to feel like a wedding, not just look like one,” Lashar says. “We put attention and love into each detail, including the invitations and table setting so that when it all came together, it would feel like their day. And it wouldn’t be a wedding without cake and champagne, so we made sure to include those elements so they could truly celebrate.”
But what stood out the most for the couple was something they didn’t expect at all. “We read our vows by sunset,” says Alejandra, who was overjoyed when recalling the event. “It was amazing. I felt like it was my wedding. It was an amazing feeling.”
“I wanted to create a beautifully styled wedding that was not only artistically designed but also filled with meaning and significance,” Lashar says. “Since Ale and Jacopo missed out on that moment for their wedding, I wanted to recreate it so they could have that special memory. I remember how significant it was on my wedding day to read our vows that we wrote for one another. I asked Ale and Jacopo if they’d write vows for one another, and they were thrilled. It was such a beautiful moment to witness and document.
“They were so heartfelt and touching. Then they exchanged their rings with lots of laughter and love and celebrated with a huge kiss at the end,” Lashar says.
“We were really having a great time,” Alejandra says. The couple enjoyed the moment so much that, Jacopo adds, “We weren’t even paying attention to the photos.”

STAYCATION HONEYMOONS
A CHANGE IN HONEYMOON PLANS DOESN’T MEAN YOU HAVE TO MISS OUT ENTIRELY ON YOUR POST-NUPTIAL CELEBRATION. INSTEAD, GIVE ONE OF THESE CLOSE-TO-HOME GETAWAYS A TRY.
written by blake millerTHE COVID-19 PANDEMIC has not only postponed or changed plans for couples’ wedding days, but also, sadly, their honeymoons. However, depending on what the restrictions of the pandemic are at the time, couples may still get away for a honeymoon without hopping on a plane or packing a passport. In fact, all four of the following destinations are within driving distance of Detroit — six hours or less — making it still feel like couples are adventuring to a romantic urban center or a quiet coastal town. Sometimes it takes thinking outside the box to embrace the idea of a honeymoon that’s sans palm trees and piña coladas but still features adventure, romance, and quality time as newlyweds.
TheROMANTIC Honeymoon
MACKINAC ISLAND MAY be an obvious choice for a drivable honeymoon spot, but there’s good reason. Not only is the island easily accessible from metro Detroit — it’s a mere four-plus hours away — it also emanates romance from the moment you arrive. Spanning only four-square miles, Mackinac Island is chockfull of character with its circa-19th century Victorian homes and quaint small-town vibe.
Rent a bike and spend the day wandering downtown or along the water’s edge by the docks, hitting major landmarks such as Doud’s Grocery (which bills itself as America’s oldest family-operated grocery store), Avenue of the Flags, and the butterfly conservatory. Better yet, hop on a horse-drawn carriage tour of the island with Mackinac Island Carriage Tours, which has been running tours of the island since 1948. With 82 percent of the island designated parkland (70 miles of which are trails that are perfect for horseback riding), it’s also ideal for hiking. Arch Rock sits 146 feet over Lake Huron and provides a remarkable view of Mackinac from above.
After a day exploring, unwind with a pre-dinner glass of Prosecco or bourbon and a game of bocce on the grounds of the Grand Hotel (grandhotel.com), a circa-1887 property overflowing with old-world charm. Opt for a lakefront room, which features panoramic views of sailboat-spotted Lake Huron, and be sure to book a couple’s massage at the luxurious Aveda spa. For dinner, head to Chianti at the nearby Mission Point Hotel (missionpoint.com), where couples can enjoy a culinary experience featuring five-course meals with wine pairings. Afterward, head to the Pink Pony (pinkponymackinac.com) for after-dinner drinks and people watching as locals and out of towners alike imbibe here on the regular.
TheEXPLORERS’
THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT a road trip that brings couples together. In fact, couples who travel together report higher levels of satisfaction with their relationships, according to a survey by the U.S. Travel Association. So while a road trip with stops along the way may not feel luxurious, it is a surefire way to connect as newlyweds. First stop: the small town of Glen Arbor in the northwest section of the state on Lake Michigan. Along the way, take a detour to Traverse City to experience some of northern Michigan’s great dining and shopping, not to mention its microbreweries and wineries. After a morning in town, head to 45 North Vineyard & Winery (fortyfivenorth.com). Set inside a hand-hewn, post-and-beam barn, the tasting room is where you’ll sample some of the state’s best wines while toasting to newlywed life. Finally, make a final stop at Leland’s Fishtown, a fishing centerpiece in the state.
After a day on the road, head back to Glen Arbor where you’ll check into the Homestead Resort (thehomesteadresort.com). Though the circa-1932 property offers an array of accommodations, book one of the adults-only suites at Little Belle. This quaint section of The Homestead instantly sets the stage for romance with its brick-paved walkways, gardens, and waterfalls and creeks running throughout.
Wake up early and head to Sleeping Bear Dunes, named one of the most beautiful places in the country by Good Morning America This national park located on the shore of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula is best known for its scalable, sweeping dunes framed by the coast of Lake Michigan. Hike the trails throughout the state park but be sure to make the adventure up Dune Climb, one of the park’s most popular and notable attractions. Want more adventure? Hop on a ferry to the Manitou Islands for even more hiking before heading back to The Homestead for some R&R at the resort spa.
TheBOUGIE Honeymoon
CAMPING MAY NOT BE on the top of most honeymooners’ lists of post-I Do destinations, but when it’s luxury glamping, it should be. There’s nothing gritty about a stay at The Fields (thefieldsofmichigan.com). No pitching tents; no roughing it under the stars. Instead, couples enjoy a luxurious glamping experience that’s rustic and glamorous all at once. Each of the hardy, cloth tents are held in place by sturdy tree branches, while inside it’s luxury everything. There’s a woodburning stove to keep warm by the fire for morning coffee, an ultra-plush king-size mattress swathed in elegant cotton sheets and fluffy pillows, full en suite bathroom (yes, with plumbing), and even a cozy reading nook to relax in. There’s purposefully no Wi-Fi here, allowing couples to disconnect from life’s responsibilities and connect more to one another. At The Fields, there’s no roasting the day’s catch over the fire; instead, there are daily chef-prepared meals, each paired with wine for a complete culinary experience. In 2021, expect the addition of a tree house spa and bar on property.
Take one morning to head into nearby South Haven, a small coastal town on Lake Michigan rich with character and charm. Stroll the downtown, in and out of antique stores and art galleries before heading to Clementine’s (ohmydarling.com) for lunch. Want margaritas and tacos instead? Head to Su Casa (sucasa-restaurante.com) for fabulous Mexican fare. To get a solid feel for life on the water, get out on the water. Michigan Maritime Museum offers charters on a variety of its fleet, including a replica 1810 top sail sloop and a circa-1941 USCG Motor Lifeboat 36460.
Post-glamping, drive south to Kalamazoo for a more urban honeymoon experience. Book a room at the Kalamazoo House Bed & Breakfast (thekalamazoohouse.com). This 140-year-old B&B oozes Victorian charm. Its proximity to downtown museums, dining, and shopping make it a great spot for couples who love to explore urban centers, too.
Couples who honeymoon at The Fields can indulge in amenities such as luxuriously appointed tents, yoga, and gourmet pies.
TheADVENTUROUS Honeymoon
EXPERIENCING AN ADVENTURE can be a significant boost to a couple’s bond. According to a study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, couples who did new, exciting activities together experienced a significant spike in their relationship quality. Which should be enough to inspire newlyweds to embark on an adventurous honeymoon exploring Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Though it’s hard to choose where to start an adventure honeymoon in this area of the state (because there are so many options), begin with a trip to Tahquamenon Falls State Park. For the really adventurous, try the River Trail, which features the challenging, four-mile-long “Trail Between Da Falls.” The reward for completing this difficult hike is the scenery; it’s often considered the park’s most beautiful trail option with views of cascading waterfalls along the way. Plenty of local campgrounds nearby offer cabins for rent, including Tahquamenon Falls Lodge.
The next day, make your way west to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. This breathtakingly picturesque state park is where honeymoon photos are made, with the park’s dramatic multicolored cliffs as a backdrop. Some of the other dramatic scenery is along Twelvemile Beach, which features a trail through a white birch forest as well as unusual sandstone formations such as Chapel Rock and Miners Castle.
After a few days exploring, make the drive to downtown Marquette for a different type of adventure — one that includes a luxurious escape to the Landmark Inn (thelandmarkinn.com)
The hotel, which opened in 1930 as the then-Northland Hotel, is a historic Marquette landmark. Each of the 100 stately suites is full of antiques and traditional architectural details that are original to the hotel.
On your way out of town, squeeze in one last adventure to the western part of the peninsula to Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Put on your hiking shoes because this state park is Michigan’s largest with 60,000 plus acres and more than 90 miles of hiking trails, many of which offer unobstructed views of Lake Superior.
Adventurous couples need look no further than Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for an unforgettable honeymoon that includes canoeing on Lake Superior (left), hiking Tahquamenon Falls (top), and a stay at Marquette’s Landmark Inn (bottom)

A BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED TABLE SETS THE TONE FOR YOUR CELEBRATION

Inspired by “a garden party at a French cafe,” Janelle Mily of Hazel & Gray Events created a tablescape designed to inspire happiness. “I wanted something light and fun, chic and sweet,” says Mily, who incorporated details such as lush florals, co ee, and leather elements for a look that’s “feminine with an edge.”

WARM & BRIGHT
With a focus on statement decor elements, warm neutral tones, and an unexpected pop of teal, Luna Soirée Principal Planner and Event Designer Kaeli Garcia created a rich, regal, and vibrant tablescape. Garcia says, “My goal as an event designer is to create a guest experience that is warm, inviting, inspiring, and inclusive.”

MODERN MONET
Connar McLeod, founder and creative director of 24 Maple, found inspiration for her tablescape in the words and work of legendary French painter Claude Monet. “He once said, ‘I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers,’” says McLeod, whose favorite detail is the floral napkin. “I’m not normally one to play with much color, but this artful play on a simple, elegant table design brought new life and dimension to the look.”

PATTERN PLAY
Ann Travis, creative director of Ann Travis Events, channeled her eclectic personal style into a bright and bold tablescape. “I wanted to show o what patterns can do and how they can make you feel,” she says. “I wanted to create a place setting that inspired joy and allowed people the opportunity to have fun with their wedding design.”

The Best of Both Worlds
WITH THEIR WEDDING PLANS DISRUPTED BY THE PANDEMIC, ALICIA BASIN AND CORINNE ROCKOFF FIND A SOLUTION THAT’S TWICE AS NICE
With their big wedding postponed because of the pandemic, Corinne Rocko and Alicia Basin decided to host an intimate backyard celebration instead.
CORINNE ROCKOFF and Alicia Basin had their wedding planned more than a year in advance: They were to be married in Detroit on August 22, 2020 in a large, celebratory affair. Family and friends would fly in from all over the country. By January 2020 all the plans were set and all there was left to do was wait for their big day.
The now Ferndale-based couple met in 2016 when Basin was visiting a mutual friend in Washington, D.C. Rockoff, a lawyer, went to law school at George Washington University and became friends with one of Basin’s sorority sisters. After six months of long-distance dating, Basin, a therapist, relocated to D.C. Then, in the summer of 2018, the couple planned to move to Basin’s home state of Michigan. The day before they left, Basin proposed to Rockoff
“I wanted the engagement to be something Corinne would always remember,” Basin says. “I decided we’d get Starbucks and watch the sun rise from the Tidal Basin, where you can see all of the monuments. It was something we did when we first moved to D.C.”
A few months later, Rockoff also proposed to Basin at the Detroit Institute of Arts — the site of their first date — and followed it with a surprise engagement party.
The couple didn’t visit many venues before settling on the Colony Club in Detroit for the reception. “It had all of
the aspects we love about Detroit,” says Rockoff, who is originally from Los Angeles. “It’s vintage with modern elements — it doesn’t feel museum-ified. Also, it used to be a women’s club, which seemed appropriate for us.”
Basin’s one request was an outdoor ceremony, but the outdoor venue they had booked, 900 Tower + Terrace in Eastern Market, gave them a refund in November 2019, saying they no longer hosted weddings. They then booked the ceremony at the Colony Club, too, and gave up the idea of it being outdoors.
Everything else was smooth sailing: they had their vendors, guest list, wedding outfits. But in March 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. At the end of May as the virus continued to spread, they called the wedding off
“At first, we were both very upset,” Basin says. “This was one big event we were looking forward to. It was pretty stressful. But when we developed a new plan, it became exciting — we’d have twice the weddings.”
They moved the wedding date to May 2021 at the Colony Club but also decided to go-ahead with an intimate backyard ceremony at Basin’s childhood home in Shelby Township on their original date in August.
“Alicia’s mom had been saying for ages that she wished one of her kids would get married in the backyard,” Rockoff says. “She’s an intense gardener
The couple hosted their intimate wedding at Alicia Basin's childhood home, giving her the outdoor ceremony she always wanted. To reflect the simplicity of the smaller celebration, Corinne Rocko selected a sleek gown from BHLDN.
and it basically looks like a gorgeous park. It was perfect.”
The guest list was condensed to immediate family and the wedding party. Everyone was tested for COVID-19 in advance, and small tables of two were arranged to adhere to social distancing recommendations. All of their vendors were also available — they just had to hire a caterer, as the Colony Club did not provide outside catering. They chose Fresh Chef Detroit, which specializes in private dinner parties. Rockoff and Basin bought different ensembles for the affair: Basin found a blush suit online at Express, and Rockoff scored a sleek, off-the-shoulder dress from BHLDN. “The dress I’m wearing at the Colony Club is a big, fluffy, Glinda the Good Witch dress, so I chose a minimalist dress for the small wedding — which is more in line with how I dress in my everyday life,” Rockoff says.
To link the weddings, their videographer will do a supercut of the two ceremonies. Rockoff and Basin also created time capsules for the small ceremony: they each put three items into boxes, signifying the past, present, and future, and they’ll open them at the big wedding in May.
“We feel so lucky,” Rockoff says. “Most people only get to do this once, but we were able to have the sampler platter of wedding options. Small and big. Cupcake dress and sleek dress. And, in the end, Alicia got the outdoor ceremony she had always wanted.”
Since 1985, metro Detroit brides have found top quality products, expert service and value at Affordable Flowers on Woodward Avenue. Our award-winning bridal staff, with more than 75 years of experience, will make your special day extraordinary with flowers imported from the world’s best growers.

A JULY 3, 2020 WEDDING had been planned for months. But with whispers of a virus causing concern, Heather Hillman and Serafin Llerena decided to send the invitations for their wedding with a note that it might be postponed. By June it was clear they could not go ahead as planned, and they cancelled the original venue, where they were expecting 200 guests. Still wanting to get married on their original date but with an executive order in place restricting how many people could gather, the couple turned to the bride’s uncles, Norman Silk and Dale Morgan, who happened to have a beautiful garden perfect for a small, 20-person wedding. Silk and Morgan own the Dorothy G. Turkel House, Detroit’s only building designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The ceremony took place in the sculpture garden under an arbor of greenery festooned with peonies, roses, hydrangea, gerbera, scabiosa, spray roses and hypericum berries. Following the ceremony, champagne and appetizers were served in the garden. The reception followed on the terrace under white umbrellas on socially distanced tables. Morgan, the bride’s uncle, custom made geometric tablecloths in peach, pink, blue, and gray, and centerpieces of pink and white peonies, gerbera, peach spray roses, dozens of pink garden roses, and delicate blue oxypetalum from Holland were grouped on the tables. The bride carried a bouquet of white peonies, garden roses, ranunculus, and silver dollar eucalyptus.

WHEN MALIA HAIN and Scott Kleepsies started planning their wedding in August 2019, their main goal was to create a timeless, luxurious event with touches of modernity. Both doctors who live in Chicago, they booked Gabriella Ammiano of the V Agency to work with the bride’s parents to plan and coordinate every detail. The pieces were all in place — but then the pandemic hit. The couple’s original venue was closed, but they were adamant about moving forward with their wedding plans, so Ammiano had to think fast. “We had about 40 days to completely change venues and start planning from scratch,” she says. “Pivoting our plans to adhere to the pandemic guidelines ended up being the best blessing.” The wedding was moved to the front gardens at The War Memorial in Grosse Pointe Farms, and Ammiano got to work on a new design. “The overall aesthetic stayed the same, but we added a lush garden vibe because of the new venue,” she says. The entire garden, including the fountain, was enclosed with a clear top tent to give the illusion of an event space, and a color palette of white, light gray, and pale blue created a clean, fresh ambiance. The fountain was filled with roses and surrounded with candles. “When the sun went down, it created the most romantic setting for a summer wedding,” Ammiano says. “It was truly a moment.”

September 25, 2020
DESPITE POSTPONING THEIR wedding from May to September, Deanna Jacobs says her wedding to Andrew Hazen “was a dream with all the pieces falling into place.” Jacobs and Hazen exchanged vows on September 25, 2020 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Traverse City. “We feel so blessed that our love preserved through 2020 and we were able to get married this year,” Jacobs says. “Life brings so much joy when we gather together, and we were reminded of this as our family and friends filled our hearts with so much gratitude and appreciation.”
The couple experienced many special moments throughout the day, but two shine the brightest: seeing each other for the first time, and their first dance. “Our first dance was a special moment for the two of us as we took dance lessons leading up to our special day, one of the best decisions we made,” Jacobs says. After their first dance, the couple celebrated with their friends and family. “The smiles we saw and the laughter we heard from our guests as they danced the night away was one of the best feelings to experience as the bride and groom,” Jacobs says. “All of the love and dedication that went into planning our wedding day was worth the wait.”

NUSHA AND IAN had family and friends spread around the world and were prepping for multiple elaborate weddings. In March when the pandemic hit, they halted everything and felt handicapped and “heartbroken that we would remain distant from family and have to postpone our marriage celebration,” Nusha says.
In June, she stumbled across a Zoom wedding company, Wedfuly, that orchestrates traditional weddings in an interactive, remote way. This seemed perfect to ensure their loved ones could comfortably join. “When we shared our plans, everyone was giddy and couldn’t wait to experience something new,” Nusha says.
Guests and officiants called in from as far as Ireland and Iran. Friends played live music between ceremonies. The bride’s sister held the Persian tradition of rubbing white sugarcanes on an LCD overhead. It was like a movie — attendees noted details in the veil and getting emotional over the vows. To keep guests engaged, they played the shoe game in lieu of first dances and lengthy speeches, with guests chatting questions and laughing over video.
“We were wed by my father’s friend in our backyard, keeping the tradition of friends officiating each other’s weddings at home,” Ian shares.
“It turned out to be a blessing in disguise; there was no way we could have gathered everyone in one spot, even without COVID,” Nusha said.
They finished their day taking pictures in a nearby park and with a staycation at the Siren Hotel in Detroit.

Stephanie Rumao, Novi, to Taylor Hennrick, Royal Oak October 10, 2020
ON JANUARY 11, 2020 two excited souls started wedding planning after a surprise engagement for the bride-to-be at the Highlands Restaurant in Detroit. Little did Stephanie Rumao and Taylor Hennrick know that the hard work of checking off boxes on their never ending wedding to-do list would come to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Month after month, the couple witnessed close friends’ weddings get postponed and cases continuing to rise as venues shut down. Although they were hopeful that a fall wedding would still be possible, by July they realized their three day Indian-American wedding celebration for 400 guests was not going to come to fruition. What remained constant despite the obstacles, though, was their love for one another and the desire to get married on their original wedding date. Rumao and Hennrick decided to postpone their reception until 2021, and continued with a wedding ceremony and dinner for 75 immediate family and friends. Though it wasn’t what they initially envisioned, “our wedding day was perfect thanks to all those who attended physically and virtually,” the couple says. “Love triumphs all, including COVID!”
