Table of Inspiration

These are various things that inspire and peaks the curiosity which plants the seeds of design.

Early Stages & Iterations

A general observation of our site prompted me to make small sketches of early models. Many of my early models did not make the final cut specifically meet site requirements nor did they address certain issues.

Iteration #1

I found inspiration in the trees themselves, the leaves to be exact. The idea is to have a structure with moving skin that would be designed to mimic the movement of leaves. There will be fish scale like pieces that would be hinged to create a flapping motion and also stoppers to prevent them from flapping too much. One problem that arise is the issue of noise which might be solved with rubber bumpers.

Iteration #2

After a simplification process and abandoning all moving parts, I decided to go with a very oblique structure that will aesthetically represent the surrounding hills and tree tops.

Iteration #3

By adding a bit of order and complexity I was able to achieve a more heroic structure. Its multi dimensional look and feel represents all previous iterations giving it a dramatic special experience. Esthetically it also flows with the topography.

Iteration #4

This iteration suffered a terrible accident. This is the simpler version of the first.

On Site Build Week #1 The first steps of my construction involved researching cost effective materials. I found PVC piping which comes in Âź inch by 10 feet peaces will work fine with my design. Nylon meshing will make excellent shin. The nylon can stretch around the frame and is perforated enough to let wind pass trough. Tension cables will be used to suspend the design in the trees.

On Site Build Week #2 Many problems arose in the initial build. The slope of the ground is greater than anticipated. The measurements that were taken in the begging were taken from the base of the trees, but as the trees go vertical they grow further away from each other. At this point I realize my design will have to be built inside the perimeter of the trees.

Final Build Week #3

With the design build but still on the ground, I did some more research and decided to abandon the tension cables. I decided to improvise and came up with site specific led supports that seemed to grow out of the tree trunks with a quirky and playful aesthetic to them. This idea turned out better than hoped because it was unexpected in the design which solved the problem of suspending.
