Event Accessories Finding Inspiration

Having fun with your décor is the perfect way of showing your venue some of your own personality and flair. Don’t know where to start? That’s OK – here are a couple of cheat sheets!

Five steps to get your creative juices flowing

1. Look for inspiration everywhere! Magazines and the internet are a great starting point – have you read the GWD blog? – and will help you build a vision for your big day. Don’t just focus on weddings either – the décor used at different events might be perfect for you.

2. Talk to the experts - You’re spoiled for choice in the northeast when it comes to event accessory suppliers.

Get an idea of what you can achieve from their websites and social media or talk to them directly. With their know how, they’ll have lots of suggestions for centrepieces, chair coverings and welcome signs to name a few. They can really help make your dream wedding a reality. 3. Let your venue take the lead. You may have picked it because of its décor, which gives you a great starting point – it may only need a few finishing touches.

Take full advantage of your surroundings but remember to talk to your venue in advance, so you know what you can and can’t do. On the other hand, if you picked a blank canvas you can really make it your own. 4. Do you have a theme in mind? This will narrow down what props you’ll need as decorations. Micro-weddings and minimalism go hand in hand so you may decide to keep it simple with just a few personal touches. 5. Many associate pastel shades with spring weddings and deeper tones for autumnal 'I do's but don't be restricted by seasons or trends. It's your day so pick what you love!

Help, I’ve got too much space now!

Some of you may be looking to adapt a larger space for a smaller guest list – while keeping social distancing in mind, of course. You’ll find some top tips below but first check out Fiona’s story on the GWD blog – she made the grand Meldrum House ballroom work wonderfully for her intimate wedding.

Draping: Adding materials – such as chiffon and voile – to the walls and ceiling can create a warm atmosphere – or be used to section off part of the room. You can tie this in with your colour scheme too!

Lighting: Concept and mood lighting can completely transform a space and are very on-trend for 2021. Adorn the ceiling with fairy lights to make your venues feel more intimate – just like a starry night. Mirrors: Normally used to make a small space bigger, adding mirrors to your wedding space can actually create the illusion of more people and a more vibrant atmosphere. Perfect if you’re going for a Gatsby-style theme!

2021 décor trends: Revealed!

Not even a global pandemic could stop the wedding world turning – here’s what’s set to be hot this year: Garden party: Outdoor weddings are still high on many of your agendas. If you’re up for a DIY challenge (and let’s face it, we’re all a little more open to DIY since the lockdowns!), making some of your accessories will add a personal touch. If being less wasteful is your goal, why not give out edible favours (homemade biscuits or mini-jam pots, anyone?) and go plastic-free as much as possible – think glass candleholders and real flowers.

Bright lights: Make a statement with neon light signs – how about one with you and your partner’s names, or your fave song lyrics? If neon isn’t up your street, you can’t go wrong with candles and lanterns to set the mood.

Fun extras: Want to add something to your wedding that your guests will be talking about non-stop? Why not get a personalised pinata for all to enjoy? Or hire a mobile bar that lets you create your own drinks? Ice cream carts are popular but firm favourites.

Meanwhile setting up a selfie mirror will keep everyone entertained and you’ll get some unique mementos from the day – just make sure they remember about social distancing! www.northeast-events.co.uk

Sanitiser stations: Everyone will be swept up in the excitement of the day so dotting hand gels about means you’ll all sanitise out of habit, just like being out at the shops! They’d also make a cute, but useful, wedding favour.
