let’s knock on the door to the original house of rym. The place where it all began some four years ago, when founders Rym Tounsi and Zied Youssef decided to make their common dream come true. Their vision, as you probably already know by now, was to combine their own country’s ancient craftsmanship and traditional products with contemporary Scandinavian design. And the rest is pretty much history. Welcome to our home!

INGREDIENTS 1 kg lemons, preferably thick-skinned 200 g sugar 2.5 L water A bundle of fresh mint DIRECTIONS Start off by making a syrup. Pour sugar and one glass of water in a heavy saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves, and then remove the pan. • Rinse and peel the lemons, cut the ends, but keep two lemons unpeeled. • Then cut all the lemons into small pieces and remove the kernels. • Put the lemons in a blender and add a glass of water. Mix well. • Add the rest of the water to the puree, and leave it for a few minutes. • Drain the liquid in a colander. • When done, add the syrup and stir well. • Tip: Add more water and/or sugar to taste. • Top of with fresh mint and serve cool.

our porcelain is made in tunisia’s oldest porcelain factory. Actually the very first porcelain factory in the whole of Africa. Here each item is both moulded and decorated by hand, with great precision.

speaking of different shades of grey, last seasons favorite cup pattern ‘Pretty petal’ is getting new company. Not only the grey version of ‘Tu es la vague’ but also ‘Zebralicious’ and saucer ‘Grandma’s goods’, Emma von Brömssen’s latest contributions to our porcelain family.

We’ve really hit the spot with brand new saucer ‘Dots for pots’. The cup on top is our new favourite ‘Hip to be square’. Designer Emma von Brömssen got her inspiration from traditional Swedish tea towels.

this season we introduce two more tile patterns by emma von brömssen. One of the patterns was drawn by Emma’s grandmother when she was in her late teens, and was originally meant to be a dress. Now Emma has given her grandma’s treasure new life in the shape of a tile pattern.

When it comes to our tiles, everything is handmade. Even the colours are composed and mixed by hand.

our tiles are made according to an inherited tradition that goes back many generations. It’s a method of complexity where each step of the process is controlled by a skilled craftsman. Owner Samir, who is also an architect, started manufacturing tiles when he was building his own house. He couldn’t find this kind of tile anywhere in Tunisia so he decided to make them himself. Since then he has refined the technique through many travels to Morocco. And the result? Our unique tiles.
Aziz origins from Morocco and he has over 20 years of experience and training in the art of making cement tiles. “The most critical part of the process is when it’s time to separate the tile from the mould.” Aziz tells us. “It takes many tries and as many failures before you get the hang of it.”

this weaving mill is where the traditional tunisian foutas, blankets and towels come to life. When House of Rym was still in its infancy, Rym and Zied were looking for a product both unique for Tunisia and easy to export – the fouta! They are more beautiful than terry towels, dries quickly and takes up minimal space in a beach bag.

“With its many colours and details, our favourite fouta pattern ‘Heavenly Honeycomb’ has the longest weaving process”, Tarek, owner of the textile factory, tells us.

This season we add two more colours of ‘Frizzy not fuzzy’ to the collection of hand towels. The striped ends and handknotted tassels on our plaids and foutas have become significant to House of Rym.

Our new rug ‘Triangle walk with me’ is resting peacefully in the midst of Sahara’s soft rolling sand dunes.

The looms are standing in rows in the weaving mill and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. A happy place. Saida has one passion in life; to weave rugs. She started her training as a young girl and has already worked professionally for seventeen years. It takes her about a week to finish a rug, depending on the complexity of the pattern.

Tunisia is one of the greatest olive producers and there are olive trees wherever you look. Olive wood is an exclusive species, characterized by its beautiful and natural patterning and desirable for fine carpentry. But it’s also hard and heavy, which makes it more difficult to work with than softer species of wood. Sassi worked in a major woodshop for 17 years before he decided to open his own studio. Now he has four people working for him.

Brand new egg cup ‘Hatching hens’ will be a great accessory in your kitchen. When you’ve finished breakfast, just keep it hanging in its string of leather.

Here are Sassi and two of his workers, Cheddy and Nizar outside the wood workshop in the city of Sidi Bouzid. They only use wood from certified olive trees that no longer bear harvestable fruit. Each felled tree is replaced with a sampling from a local nursery. 42

Welcome to the pottery in Nabeul, a town famous for its traditional pottery. The art of terracotta was established in the region during the late sixteenth century, when Berber potters discovered the great quality of the clay and the richness of the soil. Our pottery is handmade by the amazing artisan Azaiez. For the past 35 years he has been carrying these ancient skills forward. He started out as a trainee and it took him two years working with small pieces before he could master bigger ones, an art that is now his speciality. Though the pottery looks a bit primitive with its wood-fired ovens and manual potter’s wheels, the finished products are flawless.

For Azaiez the big challenge with the House of Rym pieces is that the size needs to be fixed. A skill not many potters can master.

ghalia, fatma, bouchra, latifa, arbia and saoussen are all familiar with the ‘Friendly faces’ textile family. They turn the printed textile into lovley pillows and baby blankets. 52

Monia is the manager of the sewing factory. She’s happy with the outcome of our new jacquard woven baby blanket ‘Birdie nam nam’.

PORCELAIN The House of Rym porcelain is microwave and dishwasher safe, so you don’t have to bother with hand washing. OLIVE WOOD Hand wash only, not suitable for dishwashers. To prevent the wood from drying out, occasionally coat with olive oil. Don’t leave olive wood soaking in water or exposed it to heat or sunshine. NEW VINTAGE Ottoman: Hand wash only 30°C .Dry flat. RUG Vacuum regularly. Spot clean with wool cleaning solution. Air dry. Professional carpet cleaning is recommended. CEMENT TILE The tiles should be cleaned with pH-neutral soap and water. Do not use any acids or bleach on these tiles! If sealed with a topical sealer, they may need to be resealed every couple of years.
