A NEW BEGINNING, A MORNING-SWIM
there’s no better way to start a lovely spring day than with an early dip in the ocean. However cold the big blue might be, it clears your head and wakes you up. Today our five designers are meeting up for a creative and maybe a bit odd workshop. And if you’re up for it you can join for the rest of the day. Welcome to Gothenburg and the west coast of Sweden. And a brand new House of Rym collection.

today the designers’ meet-up takes place in Emma von Brömssen’s stunning home. For this season’s collection Emma has created the pattern ‘Lit de la fleur’. As the name suggests (at least if you know your French) she got her inspiration from a blossoming flower garden. The beautiful pattern is available as a cushion cover and blanket in two colours.

A TOUR AROUND THE HOUSE
“I live in an old fishing village by the sea and my house was built in the 1930’s. I love the solid stone foundation and all the original details such as floors, doors and windows. We renovate carefully little by little and use traditional linseed oil paint. My favorite room is the orangery, at least during the summer season.” Emma von Brömssen

anna backlund In Anna’s point of view, House of Rym is about the founders’ ambitions to preserve Tunisian traditional craftsmanship and their bold decision to engage upcoming Scandinavian designers. All in order to create products that can be loved accessories in homes all over the world. Or, as she sums it up: courage, playfulness and warmth.
cecilia pettersson The design process in Cecilia’s world evolves around drawing. Something she’s had great use of when designing her House of Rym pieces. She starts off by inventing a story and then keeps on playing freely with the shapes until they are just perfect. We call it perfection in a playful way.
elisabeth dunker Fusion, expressions and handcraft. For Elisabeth that’s House of Rym in a nutshell. In her own opinion she’s kind of an accidental designer. She loves playing around, doing what she finds inspiring at the moment and if she’s lucky the result is a success. But what she calls chance, we call great talent.
emma von brömssen As a pattern designer Emma often sees the bigger picture. She thinks in patterns and covers whole areas to make every detail fit perfectly with her vision. Her patterns are most often a play with different shapes. In other words, poetry of shapes.
karin strömberg This season we welcome Karin to the design team, a skilled product designer with a thing for simplicity. She always focuses on functionality and her designs are often very clear and obvious and always executed elaborately. Her goal is to create products that arouse curiosity. We know she has succeeded.

“I’ve designed my first two products for House of Rym. I’m a product designer and my passions are function, shapes, construction and creative solutions. I leave the decor and patterns to Emma, Elisabeth, Cecilia and Anna. I’m interested in mixing materials and developing traditional techniques. I find inspiration in truly dedicated people with great passion for their calling” Karin 14

In Sweden we call it ‘Fika’. Enjoying a cup of coffee with something sweet, preferably in great company. And before we start to work we just got to have chitchat over some coffee a.k.a. fika.

HANGING GARDENS OF RYM flowers have always been a big part of House of Rym, but now they finally have a place of their own. Karin Strömberg has designed our brand new plant hangers. Made of terracotta and leather. Say hi to ‘Hanging gardens of Rym’.
Fika time is also playtime. And when you have a fika with five designers it can result in a painted pattern on the table.

creative workshops are all about playfulness. It doesn’t have to be grand and pretentious, quite the opposite, since great ideas are more often revealed in the small details. And playing around with open minds can result in great design.

design is also about doing the unexpected to create something eye-catching. Like creating a perfectly balanced mandala out of eclectic dinnerware for instance.

Five designers baking an apple-crumble together... Sounds a bit chaotic, but with a common idea and goal, the baking process is much like the design process; fun, a bit loud and with a heavenly result. And the recipes are quite the same; great ingredients that are put together with passion and a pinch of collaboration.

the preparations before a meal, is as big part of the dinner as the actual food. And when Emma, Anna, Cecilia, Karin and Elisabeth are in charge, creating beautiful structure out of what seems to be chaos is the way. Painted eggs, cress on the table, and of course our ‘Off the wall’ tiles as coasters. Four of the designers have designed one beautiful tile pattern each.

the new pattern ‘Commedia dell’arte’ is quite symbolic for our design. The name translates Comedy of art which means narrative, but improvised drama. Just like our collections. Five designers, each with their own unique perspective come together and create a playful story. It’s mixing and matching. It’s spontaneous. It’s eclectic yet cohesive. It’s the House of Rym.

We use the finest terracotta and genuine leather. These pots are handmade in Nabeul, a town famous for its traditional pottery. An art form Tunisian artisans have practiced since the Roman times. The art of terracotta was established in the region during the late sixteenth century, when Berber potters discovered the great quality of the clay and the richness of the soil. Today, many workshops in Nabeul carry forward these ancient skills. And even tough they have improved the techniques they uphold the tradition and still work with wood-fired ovens.

And just like all lovely things they need to be cared for. Treat them right and they will stay happy and beautiful for a long, long time. TEXTILES • Printed Cushion Cover: Hand wash 30°C. May shrink 6%. • Jacquard woven blanket: Hand wash only 30°C. Dry flat. May shrink. • Tu es la vague-Blanket: 30°C gentle wash. • Fouta and Hand Towel: For perfect absorbency and softness, wash twice before use. Machine wash cold, gentle cycle. Line dry or tumble dry low heat for a few minutes. • Printed Tea Towel: 40°C gentle wash. KIDS TEXTILE • Printed blanket: 40°C wash. Dry flat, Reshape whilst damp. PORCELAIN The House of Rym porcelain is microwave and dishwasher safe, so you don’t have to bother with hand washing. OLIVE WOOD Hand wash only, not suitable for dishwashers. To prevent the wood from drying out, occasionally coat with olive oil. Don’t leave olive wood soaking in water or exposed it to heat or sunshine. NEW VINTAGE Ottoman: Hand wash 30°C. RUG Vacuum regularly. Spot clean with wool cleaning solution. Air dry. Professional carpet cleaning is recommended. CEMENT TILE The tiles should be cleaned with pH-neutral soap and water. Do not use any acids or bleach on these tiles! If sealed with a topical sealer, they may need to be resealed every couple of years.
