Vietnam If you want to become one of the happiest people on the planet, spend some time in Vietnam. Vietnam is one of our favourite places in Southeast Asia. Once you’ve spent a few days here, you’ll begin to see why. The beating heart of Vietnam is colonial grandeur and stylish luxury retreats, green jungles and translucent bays, fragrant food and smiling locals. Vietnam is ridiculously liveable and low-key charming. This thin snake of land – nestled between Laos and Cambodia to the west and a long lick of the South China Sea to the east – has a spectacular coastline, dotted with delightful beaches and scuba diving spots. We highly recommend you just relax and immerse yourself in the ebb and flow of everyday life, as the locals do. Grab a bicycle and mosey along the green rice paddies, taking time to pop in and out of cafes for great coffee, fresh baguettes and design stores at your leisure. Its cities are alive with energy and buzz to a soundtrack of a million scooters. No one has mastered the art of enjoying life like the Vietnamese. Whatever you do, and regardless of the season, enjoy the country at a slower pace. Trust us – and our 20 years in crafting holidays – you’ll be a happier person for it.

Considered one of the most picturesque beaches in Vietnam, Danang Beach is split into three main parts with the southern part the most sought after, including Pham van Dong Beach, My Khe Beach (China Beach), Bac My An Beach and Non Nuoc Beach. Beautiful resorts and multiple golf courses line the coastline and offer a great haven for relaxation with the beach generally uncluttered and without touts.

VIETNAM / ESCAPISM

BEST KEPT SECRET

Quy Nhon Lush and laid back, Quy Nhon is unassuming with pristine secluded beaches, endless hours of tranquillity, beautifully entwined with sundry escapades and a simple yet rich layer of culture. With views of the azure ocean filled with striking archipelagos in front and lush green mountains behind, you could not be in a more paradisiacal location. The city is well-designed and endowed with beautifully kept villages, exquisite architecture, mouth-watering and diverse cuisine and a bustling feeling of trade and well-being. Han Mac Tu - Vietnam’s favourite romantic poet spent his final young years here and it is common to see lines of poetry in calligraphy hanging on the walls of cafes and shops throughout the city. Its sun-baked and breath-taking landscape will lead you to some of the most beautiful beaches you will ever discover with water so clear you can see every tiny rock and shell on the sea floor. Should you tear yourself away from your private patio and that chilled glass of wine, there is plenty to explore in this precious city: Quy Nhon.

VIETNAM / ESCAPISM / QUY NHON

PLAY.

Even if you only had two or three days in Quy Nhon, you’d still be able to cover much of what the city has to offer, namely great food, historical architecture and temples, emerald green rice paddies and incredible beaches. You have the choice of three

buzzing markets. The Quy Nhon market is the biggest and winds its way through alleyways and is as authentic as they come, with many locals shopping here. Quy Nhon is a true cacophony of noise, theatre and spectacle. If designer handbags and clothes are your thing then this is the market for you. If beautiful produce is more your thing then instead take a wander to the local fish markets. Less of a sensory overload, instead it’s a great spot to enjoy freshly caught seafood and pick up an exemplary picnic for later in the day. As well as tiny trucks with trailers of stacked pineapples, there are stalls selling everything from shiny deep purple eggplants, bananas in every conceivable colour and size to perfectly curated mounds of dried fruits, nuts and spices. Having your own guide and driver available in Quy Nhon is a major win. The roads are great, and the province is filled with so many unexpected delights, a meticulously restored Catholic church dating back to the colonial era, many Cham ruins and centuries old Buddhist pagodas and temples. The Binh Dinh Province museum is packed with archaeological artefacts and revolutionary memorabilia and usually devoid of other travellers – a rare treat. Visit a house-cum-workshop of a local hat maker whose family has been in the business for generations. Beach hop from Quy Nhon to Queens Beach (Bai Trung), popular with the locals and famous for its egg-shaped pebbles and while you are at the beach visit the tomb of Han Mac Tu, the romantic and ill-fated Vietnamese poet of the 20th century. A little further from Quy Nhon is Ky Co, a picturesque little coastal town etched into the surrounding mountains. There is just enough going on here to easily spend a few days, swimming in the clear waters of its white sand beach, taking in the history of the towns Buddha temples and eating fresh seafood at night. There is a walking route that passes beneath the limestone cliffs, and through thick greenery dotted with wildflowers and down to hidden swimming coves and up over scenic clifftops. Take a picnic and your camera- sunsets from here are epic.

EAT.

Quy Nhon’s rich culinary heritage means there is no shortage of incredible food to be found. Aside from all the wondrous Asian flavours that form the basis of the food, Quy Nhon has a bountiful supply of seafood for you to enjoy. Starting the day with a drip

coffee is a must and is best followed by something to eat from the market or taken away from one of the ancient bakeries that open early. Banh Tom, little sweet potatoes shrimp fritters are a traditional street food snack eaten everywhere in Quy Nhon, as is the addictive Pho bo, a beef noodle soup enjoyed for Breakfast and Lunch. A day in Quy Nhon is not complete without Che Ba Mau a colourful dessert. Being surrounded by the sea means you enjoy impossibly fresh seafood at every meal, should you desire. Enjoy!

STAY.

Gorgeously romantic and surrounded by mountains are the Anantara Quy Nhon Villas. The cove in front of the property boasts golden sands, azure waters showcased by the dramatic, hilly back drop. There are only 26 villas dotted around seven acres of

lush landscaping fronting a private cove. Each villa boasts panoramic views through floor to ceiling doors - especially poignant at sunrise. You can laze by the pool at your villa sipping Vietnamese iced coffee and snacking on gourmet street eats. With a dedicated butler, wine cellar and a daily restocked deli, it’s tempting to stay in this voluntary seclusion and spend your days lolling in the ocean breeze on your private patio. However, if you are keen to cover the history, culture, crafts, food and architecture your butler will only to be too keen to map your itinerary out for you. After a day’s exploring, treat yourself to Anantara spa’s decadent tree house to shamelessly pamper yourself with coconut milk bath soaks, deep tissue massage and chakra crystal balancing. From the clifftop, you can just spot the twinkling lights of Quy Nhon skyline mirrored in the ebony waters of your little bay where the lights come up on the fishing boats and lobster trapping platforms. There are few spots in the world that could rival Quy Nhon for its condensed abundance of great food, fascinating history and beautiful beaches. If you want to find the best treasure from around Asia all in one city, you now know where to go. It is a journey into a world of textures and flavours, with succulent seafood from up and down the coast and fresh Vietnamese fare.

Why aren’t you back to Vy Hamlet To watch the sun rising over the areca trees? Whose garden is so lush in jade-like green And bamboo leaves cover whose firm square face? Han Mac Tu

cambodia Cambodia is unfamiliar and enchanting - a country packed with ancient history, unreal architecture and vibrant people. If there is anywhere to get off the beaten track, it’s here. Cambodia for us is wandering through the old ruins of Angkor Wat, exploring Phnom Penh’s vibrant waterfront, becoming intoxicated by the smell of spices in the Central Markets and exhilarating tuk tuk rides by wannabe boy races. Cambodia is a standout bucket list destination, offering adventure, culture, breathtaking sightseeing and much needed dips in the gulf. Siem Reap echoes Cambodia’s beguiling charms - its rich colours and tastes, ancient buildings, kind people, sacred traditions and religion, but its unique cultural landscape is very much intact, and it will captivate your mind and fill you with a longing to return. While we can’t rave about Cambodia enough, it’s helpful to note that the country is a major stopover to other amazing counties too. With Vietnam and Thailand, a short flight away, it can be a great spot to set up base for other exotic destinations.

emerged from decades of civil war and unrest, the city has transformed itself into a vibrant bustling capital, with a number of restaurants, bars and hotels appearing. Situated at the confluence of three rivers, the mighty Mekong, the Bassac and the great Tonle Sap, the city exudes provincial charm with plenty to see. Besides the signature attractions, there are several markets worth visiting and the walkable riverfront boulevard for a leisurely stroll. A true adventure of the most immersive kind and perfect for intrepid couples looking for a completely off-the-grid experience, full of opulence and adventure in the Cambodian wilderness. Tucked in amongst three national parks this is a destination that offers picturesque forest, waterways and local wildlife.

STAY.

The stunning Shinta Mani Wild is a luxury tented camp set amongst 400 acres of lush forest overlapping three national parks. This is the first private wildlife and nature reserve in Cambodia, located three hours from Phnom Penh or Sihanoukville.

Recently opened Shinta Mani Wild boasts a spectacular location, tucked into the wildlife corridor which runs between Bokor and Kirirom National Parks. Famed hotel designer and architect Bill Bensley has teamed-up with the local government and conservation organisations to protect this area from poaching and logging, whilst also providing a superb site for one of Cambodia’s hottest properties. The 15 luxurious tents are perched either at the edge or directly over the roaring rapids. The spacious rooms are designed in classic safari style, recalling the age of exploration with their whimsical decor and authentic Khmer objects d’art. Each tent is luxuriously designed in true Bensley style with tasteful local colours and fabrics, and fascinating curios to recall the age of explorers and la belle époque. You can choose from a wild tent, a waterfall tent or an expansive two bedroom tent and indulge in luxurious extras such as an outdoor freestanding bathtub. You can enjoy the full services of a Bensley Butler as you unwind between excursions. Evoking a “Jacky O meets Cambodian jungle safari” feel.

EAT.

Your meals are served either in your tent, or in the Waterfall Restaurant where the locally sourced food is provided and served by graduates of the Shinta Mani Foundation program. The foundation provides training and jobs for young local people and is supported

by all Shinta Mani hotels in Cambodia. The Landing Zone bar is the perfect location to mingle with other guests and unwind after a day of trekking in the jungle or exploring the waterways. The resort also offers a central swimming pool, and a zipline. s e e m o r e a t w w w. a c t i v e a s i a . c o . n z

Laos If there is anywhere on the planet that we encourage you to embrace living as the locals do, it’s Laos. Resting in the shadow of what was once French Indochina, hidden temples and traditional Buddhist ceremonies reveal themselves, whilst on the Mekong River, day-to-day life plays out before you. The sleepy capital, Vientiane provides a great introduction to the charms of the country. Step back in time and explore little shops and cafes and have dinner out doors at the bustling night market. One of our favourite destinations is Luang Prabang. A UNESCO protected site, with colourful markets, gilded temples and beautiful colonial architecture. Cap your day off by sitting on the river bank, sipping an ice-cold cocktail and watching the jaw-dropping sunset over the Mekong River. Don’t expect a wild and crazy evening, as there is an 11.30pm curfew for all bars and restaurants in Luang Prabang – simply quaint and charming. Vang Vieng is an idyllic, laid-back town, bisected by the Nam Song River with incredible mountainous landscapes and plenty of adventure. Xieng Khouang is the home to the ‘Plain of Jars’, the mysterious, prehistoric stone megaliths and absolutely worthy of a visit. Less travelled Southern Laos features Si Phan Don – a riverine network offering tranquility at its most extreme and the Bolaven Plateau, an elevated area of lush jungle and picturesque trekking trails.

LUANG PRABANG, LAOS PLAY.

The first sight on descent into Luang Prabang is the range of hills in which it nestles. If you go in the wet season, you’ll see the higher ones, lush with the summer rains, peeking through a fine mist. Welcome to the most forested country in Asia. The

second sight is the mighty Mekong River, the swollen expanse that feeds the city and defines its outline. The city itself is comparatively compact and blessedly quaint. The colonial era has left an indelible imprint on the city, UNESCO protected and for good reason. Luang Prabang has brilliantly preserved French colonial architecture and 33 active gold covered Buddhist temples. Wandering your way through the quiet grounds with the intricate deep burgundy and golds of the monasteries really is soothing for the soul. With its fusion of French and Laos culture, Luang Prabang enthrals travellers from the moment they set foot here. There is simply nowhere like it. Probably the most iconic image of Luang Prabang is that of the saffron – robed barefoot monks on their daily morning alms, collecting bowls of sticky rice from the locals. It is an integral Luang Prabang experience so make sure you get out of bed to see this incredible sight. Taking a guided Active Asia tour can be a good way to discover hidden gems. Luang Prabang also puts on epic sunrises and sunsets and there’s no better place to take it all in than 100 metres above the town at Mount Phousi, offering up 360-degree views of the town, temples and the fog rolling in across the distant mountains. At night, the town comes alive with the famous night markets. You’ll find the streets are filled with the sounds of women haggling, children shouting and motorbikes whizzing past. Somehow Luang Prabang managers to resolve this vast confusion of sights, sounds and smells skilfully bringing things together in harmony. Make sure you visit street food alley and enjoy a bowl of Khao Soy and top it off with a cold Beerlao. Located just outside of Luang Prabang is the stunning Kuang Si Waterfall. How many waterfalls have you seen that boast a 50-metre cascading drop into three-tiered azure swimming holes? We suggest going early with your private guide and then, as the sun starts to peek through the forest canopy, make your way up to the top tier and admire the views from above. s e e m o r e a t w w w. a c t i v e a s i a . c o . n z

STAY.

Cradled in the glen of the Nahm Dong River like a microcosm of nearby Luang Prabang, the series of buildings at the Rosewood Luang Prabang have been designed after the French-colonial style that dominates the town. Because of the site’s geography,

suited to narrow pathways, building work was carried out not by heavy machinery but manually over three years by 400 local craftspeople. The result is Bill Bensley at his chic-meets-quirky best. Period details faux and real abound, the latter including a land deed from 1560 written on pigskin. While the rooms and suites, situated in a building by a brook, are charming (this is The Rosewood, after all), it’s the Riverside and Waterfall Pool Villas and Hilltop Tents that truly fulfil the potential of the location. Of these there are only a handful (and only 23 rooms in total) and each is unique. Every villa is named and styled after Bensley’s fancy of a historical Mekong expedition-era explorer, official or companion: you might find yourself in a soothing, bluehued chamber or an almost – steampunk gentleman’s space. Even architectural details such as doorways are unique to each, through gold-left stencil work on the walls. The soothing nearby waterfall, private plunge pools and poolside bars top off the experience. As fun as the villas are, who doesn’t want to imagine themselves as a ground – breaking historical figure? Bensley brings a more local flavour to the hotel’s premium offering - the stilted hilltop tents. The term ‘tent ‘applies only to the roof structures: the remainder of the wrapper is solid, with generous roll up windows and terraces that give the lofty perches views over the surrounding landscape with a minimal physical footprint thanks to the stilts. The decor of each is inspired by one of the 80 distinct local hill tribes but retains a sense of luxury and attention to detail. Our able Active Asia guides can arrange visits around the area to sites that retain their authenticity and charm. From no-ride elephant sanctuaries to less-known villages for an experience with local crafts or other elements of the diverse Laotian culture.

BAGAN

Truly one of the world’s greatest archaeological sites, the thousands of temples that span the plains of Bagan are testament to the religious devotion of Myanmar’s people and rulers over the centuries. Combined they provide views

quite unlike anywhere else. Of the original 10,000 pagodas, more than 2,000 remain standing today. Each has its own unique story to tell with many able to be freely explored inside. Outside of the Bagan Archaeological Zone, Nyaung U is an atmospheric village with a bustling market. To be in the thick of the temples, Old Bagan is the place to stay – it sits within what remains of the city walls.

IS TIPPING EXPECTED IN ASIA? Although there is little general culture of tipping in the region, it has increasingly become an expected part of life in tourist-related industries. In general, no tip is expected at restaurants or in taxis, but it is generally accepted that your guide and drivers supplement their income through the tips they receive. We recommend USD$2 for drivers and USD$4-5 for guides per traveller per day.

HOW MUCH MONEY WILL I NEED IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA? Everybody spends a different amount when they travel, but Southeast Asia can be pleasantly inexpensive and eating out is very reasonable. As a rough guide we recommend USD $25 – $50 per person as a good amount to cover daily expenses. This won’t cover huge shopping sprees or living the good life in fine hotels and restaurants.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT? Travel to South-east Asia is a pleasure at any time of the year – the decision of when will be the best time for you will depend on your own personal tolerance of heat and rainfall, and the activities you wish to include. Vietnam’s length and varied topography combine to make it a challenging country to describe climatically. As most journeys cover the entire length of the country, it is possible that you will encounter rain at some point along the way; where this is most likely to fall and the impact it may have on your trip will depend on the time of year. In most cases rainfall is tropical in nature, meaning short heavy showers that refresh the air, rather than extended periods of rain. Like most of Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos are warm to hot year-round and the climate is dominated by the annual monsoon cycle with alternating wet and dry seasons. Best time to go: Vietnam’s climate is very diverse, but April, May and October are generally good. November to February is best for the South. Best time to go: Cambodia – November through May Best time to go: Myanmar – November through February Best time to go: Laos – January through April

CAN I DRINK TAP WATER? Absolutely NOT. Use bottled/reusable water to brush your teeth and never open your mouth in the shower! Ask your guide where filtered water can be found if you have your reusable water bottle with you. It’s also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

WHAT DOES ONE PACK TO SOUTHEAST ASIA? With only two seasons to worry about (mostly), Southeast Asia doesn’t require too much baggage space to pack for. Pack anything linen, silk and cotton. All these fabrics breath and dry super-fast when travelling. Ladies - a large scarf or wrap is great for the cooler evenings. Be mindful of the local culture: pack some clothes that cover your shoulders and legs for visits to temples, mosques and churches. M A K E S O M E N OT E S H E R E
