anoi, the capital of Vietnam, and over 1,000 years old, offers a fascinating mix of old and new.

Best of Angkor. A day discovering the incredible key temples of the Angkor complex. Your guide will collect you from your hotel to begin with Angkor Thom entering via the South Gate and the Bayon complex. The vast area of the Angkor Thom ruins, over a mile on one side, contains many stone temples and other features to explore. The city has five monumental gates (one in each wall plus an extra in the eastern wall), 20m high and decorated with stone elephant trunks and the king’s favourite motif, the four faces of Avalokiteshvara. The Bayon Temple (circa 1190) is a Buddhist temple but retains elements of Hindu cosmology and imagery. Standing in the exact center of the walled city, it represents the intersection of heaven and earth. It is known for its enigmatic smiling faces of Avalokiteshvara and its extraordinary bas-reliefs. Enjoy a break for lunch at a restaurant set in a garden setting close to the temples. Then continue to visit Angkor Wat, the jewel in the crown of Angkor. Angkor Wat is the best preserved example of Khmer architecture in Cambodia and is so grand in design that some rank it among the Seven Wonders of the World. The “lost city” of Angkor first attracted the interest of Europeans in the 1800s after Cambodia was colonized by the French. Transfer back to hotel around 5pm

Historical Phnom Penh - your full day tour includes a visit to the Independent Monument, the Royal Palace built by King Norodom in 1866 and the Silver Pagoda. The treasures found inside include a solid gold Buddha encrusted and weighing 90 kilograms and a small 17th century emerald and baccarat crystal Buddha. Also, visit the Wat Phnom Temple, Phnom Penh’s namesake, from where you can enjoy views over the tree-lined avenues of the city. Enjoy a break for lunch at a local restaurant. Cambodian Adventure

Cambodia on this independent package of adventure, travelling from Phnom Penh to the magnificent Angkor temples. You’ll meet the people, visit local communities, clamber through the temples like Indiana Jones and travel by boat and bicycle. Day 1 Phnom Penh (L)

Morning arrival at Phnom Penh International Airport. On arrival your local English speaking guide will meet you for the transfer to your hotel. This city was once considered one of the most beautiful in the Orient, and despite its recent turbulent history it still retains a colonial charm. Historical Phnom Penh. After being collected from your hotel by your local English speaking guide, your full day tour includes a visit to the Independent Monument, the Royal Palace built by King Norodom in 1866 and the Silver Pagoda. Located within the grounds of the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda is so named because of its floor, which is made up of 5000 silver tiles. Then in the afternoon visit the Notorious Tuol Sleng Museum. In 1975 Tuol Svay Prey High School was taken over by Pol Pot’s security forces and turned into a prison known as Security Prison 21 (S-21). Then drive a short distance to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek located on the outskirts of Phnom Penh. Day 2 Phnom Penh to Siem Reap (B)

Early this morning board the ferry service between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. This service operates between July and March when water levels are high enough. The service is like an airline seat but often very full, so many people opt to sit on the roof where it is cooler (and windy) but offers good views for part of the way. The journey generally takes around 4 ½ - 5 hours. NOTE: This service does occasional have breakdowns and delayed travel times. Although they do have life jackets on board, Active Asia advises the travel standards will not be equal to those in New Zealand and some risk is inherent. Alternatively you may choose the bus service overland, operated by Giant Ibis which began in 2012 and offers a variety of services that will

44

appeal particularly to foreigners. Their fleet of buses are newer, the seats lean back, they offer free Wi-Fi, a bottle of water and a pastry and their staff speak English. They are also the only full-size bus company in Cambodia to offer seat belts. The journey time will be between 5 ½ and 7 hours. Roads are bumpy but you will get to see the countryside and the chaotic roads. Two stops are also made. Overnight in Siem Reap. Day 3 Siem Reap (B, L, D)

This morning stretch your legs with a leisurely cycle around the stunning Angkor complex. Cycle Angkor. After being collected from your hotel, transfer to the start point, where you will be fitted with locally hired bikes (quality touring bikes) for a leisurely cycle through quieter country lanes and passages around the Angkor area. Discover the countryside, dusty roads and paths amidst the stunning Angkor complexes. Return for a leisurely lunch at a restaurant set in a garden setting before returning to your hotel. Note: no visits to temples are included whilst cycling. Return to your hotel to freshen up and relax, before your Cambodia Cultural Experience. A real insight into the Angkor period and today’s Cambodian culture. Your guide will collect you from your hotel at 2pm (or later by arrangement). It is a rice to riches story for owner Por, he had a vision of owning a fine restaurant. He started by opening a humble kiosk serving his traditional noodle creations, it became an essential part of the community and now 30 years later, the dream and the flavours have come to life.

Day 4 Angkor (B, L)

This morning your Indiana Jones adventure begins Angkor Adventure. A full-day tour for the avid adventurer wanting to discover the variety of different temple styles around Angkor Begin at 7am to get the most of your experience, begin with a visit to Ta Prohm. This sprawling monastic complex is only partially cleared of jungle overgrowth. Intentionally left partially unrestored, massive fig and silk-cotton trees grow from the towers and corridors offering a ‘jungle atmosphere’ and some of the best ‘tree-intemple’ photo opportunities at Angkor. Ta Prohm is well worth an extended exploration of its dark corridors and open plazas. Then visit Pre Rup, with richly detailed, wellpreserved carvings this is arguably one of the most architecturally and artistically superior temple-mountain. A short stop to see how huge water reservoirs were created at Srah Srang. A multi-tiered landing platform on the west edge of the baray (reservoir) is adorned with naga balustrades and guardian lions. The very sparse remains of an island temple can be seen poking from the middle of the lake during the dry season when the water is low. Enjoy lunch (included) at a restaurant set in a garden setting on the edge of the temples. After lunch climb the temple mountain on Phnom Bakheng (Bakheng Hill), the first major temple to be constructed in the Angkor area. The foundation of Bakheng is carved from the existing rock edifice rather than the laterite and earth fill of most other temples. Bakheng’s hilltop location offers a view of the Tonle Sap Lake and a distant Angkor Wat. Then return to your hotel late afternoon Day 5 Departure (B)
