General Information House of Travel Accommodation Ratings To assist with the selection of your Fiji accommodation we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. These are personal ratings offered by our people from their own experience and should therefore be used as a guide only. These ratings may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. Standard rooms, clean and comfortable usually with basic furnishings and private en suites. Typically most properties would include a restaurant and bar but have a limited range of other guest facilities and services. Moderate accommodation with a reasonable range of room facilities and good level of comfort usually with a wide range of recreational and leisure activities available for guest enjoyment. Superior accommodation offering exceptional level of comfort in rooms with quality furnishings and fixtures. There tends to be greater attention to personalised service and strong focus on quality food and beverages. First class accommodation including small and stylish boutique properties. Accommodation in this rating offer the very best services with detailed focus on high customer satisfaction and are usually located in prime locations. They are considered the ultimate accommodation in Fiji. A half star is noted when the level of service and facilities falls between two grades. Grading accommodation can be quite subjective and generally speaking the standard and services will be in line with the price paid. Please check with your House of Travel specialist to ensure you get the accommodation that best fits your needs. Throughout the brochure the symbols

There’s lots of choice, from cruising to culture: take a look at our sightseeing pages. After this, we recommend researching the area you’re staying in and what’s on offer locally. It’ll mean you won’t spend precious time finding your feet when you arrive.

Nadi To Sun Coast Nearly everyone who visits Fiji comes to Nadi. This bustling multi-cultural town is the main hub for International travellers, and offers great places to eat, drink and shop. There are several affordable hotels between the Airport and downtown Nadi and with its close proximity to Denarau Island and the Mamanucas, it provides an ideal place from which to base yourself.Venture a short 20 minute drive northwest of Nadi and you’ll be at Vuda Point, home to Vuda Marina, which is popular with boaties. There are a number of restaurants & hotels in the area and Viseisei Village, the legendary landing site of the first Fijians is nearby. Stretching around the northern shore of Viti Levu from here to Nananu-i-Ra Island at the northern tip of Viti Levu is Fiji’s Sun Coast. The scenic drive up the coast takes about a 2 ½ hour drive from the Nadi Airport passing sugar cane fields, green pastoral land and the market towns of Ba and Rakiraki.Travelling the Sun Coast is a great way to experience Fiji’s rich and diverse culture.

GARDEN OF THE SLEEPING GIANT – Tucked beneath the foothills of the Sabeto mountain range and just a 10 minute drive from Nadi, these popular gardens boast dozens of varieties of colourful orchids amid a sea of tropical vegetation. There’s a network of walking tracks, lily ponds and great picnic spots for you to enjoy. SRI SIVA SUBRAMANIYA SWAMI TEMPLE – On the outskirts of Nadi Town, this is a tranquil spot to reflect or just chill out for a while. The temple is decorated with carved wooden deities all the way from India. Visitors are welcome as long as they’re dressed modestly and haven’t consumed alcohol or meat that day. NADI MARKETS – On offer is a wide variety of fruit, vegetables and other produce and one whole section of the market is dedicated to kava only. This is a great place to stock up for that picnic. The Fijian pineapples are especially worth sampling and are quite a bit smaller but much sweeter than other pineapples. ED’S BAR – Ed’s is a bit of an institution with a personality all of its own. Most nights it lures a buzzing and mixed crowd of tourists, locals and expats. It’s more than just a watering hole though – they have live bands and there’s a small restaurant attached. DENARAU MARINA – Just a 20 minute drive from Nadi, the marina is the main departure point for half and full day cruises to the beautiful Mamanuca Islands. Most times it’s a hive of activity, so if you’re heading out on one of the half or full day island cruises, plan to be at the Marina in good time. KOROYANITU NATIONAL HERITAGE PARK – A great place to head if you’re a keen hiker or nature lover, with beautiful walks through native forests and grasslands. You’ll see plenty of birds, archaeological sites and waterfalls. SABETO VALLEY – Set 15 minutes north of Nadi Town, this lush valley at the foot of the highlands is a journey to rural Fiji. The Sabeto River winds its way down from the densely-forested interior, and along its route it has carved a valley which is peppered with traditional villages. One of the most popular things to do here is to immerse yourself into the Sabeto Valley mud bath - it’s somewhat of a natural spa experience and the locals believe it has natural healing properties.

This good value for money airport favourite with fantastic service provides the perfect setting in which to either start or end your Fijian holiday experience. With stunning gardens and sweeping vistas what more could you ask for?
No matter what time you check into the Tanoa, you will not have to worry about where to find a good meal. Fuel up on the large buffet breakfast, then grab a coffee from Mint Café before heading off or just relaxing poolside. Be it the beginning or end of your break, the Tanoa ensures a convenient and comfortable stay close to local shopping and just minutes away from the airport with complimentary airport transfers.
Novotel Nadi is conveniently located just a few minutes from Nadi Airport and 15 minutes from Denarau Marina for those requiring island transfers. Set on 42 acres of tropical gardens, with its spacious rooms overlooking the 9-hole golf course or gardens, this is an ideal place to stay for several days or just stopover en route to the outer islands. Fiji Hideway Resort & Spa Vuda
Legend tells us that Fiji’s first inhabitants made landfall at this beautiful spot, and liked it so much that they never left. The moment you arrive, you’ll understand why: it’s a perfect little paradise. With its palm trees and white sands, it looks like an island, feels like an island, and has a peaceful, faraway atmosphere, but is just 15 minutes from Lautoka and 20 minutes from Nadi Airport. The resort has a spa, lots of activities on offer, a great little boutique, restaurant and bar. The Mamanuca islands lie just out to sea, so it’s an ideal destination for day trips from the resort’s jetty.
A brand new property opening 01 July 2016 is located in the oldest part of this island nation. Vuda (pronounced Vunda) is where Fiji’s first inhabitants landed, and its beautiful, circular marina is still the landing place of choice for sailors from around the world. Lots of planning has gone into making this a true luxury ‘hideaway’, with chic, very spacious bures and top amenities, including an elegant day spa. All you need do is select the accommodation plan that suits you best, and settle in for a superrelaxing stay.

Denarau Island Just a hop, skip and a jump from Nadi Airport (20 minutes, to be more precise), Denarau was once little more than a marina that served as a jumping off spot to the islands. Sure, there was a world class 18-hole golf course, but if you weren’t into golf, there was little point in sticking around longer than it took for the next ferry to show up. How times have changed! Nowadays Denarau is home to at least six world-class resorts, all with facilities like lagoon-style pools, fine dining restaurants and spas. Add to this the Denarau Marina shopping centre and you’ve got a great self-contained holiday experience. Of course, you don’t have to sacrifice the classic Fiji island experience if you stay on Denarau: take a day trip to one of the nearby islands or enjoy a romantic sunset dinner cruise.
© Fiji Tourism/Chris McLennan
Our favourite things to see and do DENARAU SHOPPING CENTRE – Definitely worth a visit. The centre features shops offering beachwear and clothing, souvenirs, convenience stores, a post office and bank, a hot bread shop, a pharmacy and beauty therapy centre. It also features some bars and restaurants serving up Italian and Indian cuisine, Fiji’s first Hard Rock Cafe, and Cardo’s which serves up great steaks. There’s also roving entertainment and evening cultural performances that add to the flavour!

NADI BAY
GOLF AND TENNIS – Denarau is home to an impressive 18-hole championship golf course where bunkers are in the shape of sea creatures. With water challenges on 15 of the 18 holes, it’s sure to test your skills and patience. There’s also a dozen synthetic and natural grass tennis courts that offer both day and night options. VISEISEI VILLAGE – About a ½ hour drive from Denarau is Viseisei Village, which according to local lore is the oldest settlement in Fiji. The village is worth a visit. To have a look around, you’ll need to pay about F$3 to the ladies who run the tiny craft market at the village, and remember to remove your hat and wear something that covers your shoulders and knees. BULA BUS – Easily recognisable with their thatched roof and open sides, this is a fun way to get about between resorts on Denarau and Denarau Marina. From time to time they have been known to run on ‘Bula Time’ so be patient. DAY SPAS – For a bit of self pampering, treat yourself to a relaxing massage or facial at one of the many day spas on Denarau. These day spa treatments are so popular that advanced bookings are essential. GET WET! – Enjoy a load of laughs and a thorough drenching at Big Bula Water Park; it’s one of Denarau’s newest attractions and it offers a huge range of fun features. Surfing, sliding, climbing, racing... best for big kids and adults. CRUISING – Denarau is right on the doorstep of the magnificent Mamanuca archipelago. Take a full-day or half-day cruise through the heavenly, world-famous scenery. Boats leave from the marina daily.

Coral Coast It’s early evening. The thumping of drums signals the traditional kava ceremony is about to start. This morning you went horseriding on an almost-deserted beach, and this afternoon you watched tiny tropical fish giving their best Nemo impersonations. If you were a golfer you’d spend tomorrow at the world-class Natadola Golf Course or instead opt for sand-surfing at the Sigatoka Sand Dunes. That’s the beauty of the Coral Coast – there’s so much on offer for every type of holiday, from the most active to the extremely sedate. Of course, a great holiday isn’t just about life in a bubble - hire a car and take your time, stop for fresh watermelon at a roadside stall, and return the friendly “Bula” offered by every local along the way. By the time you arrive at your resort, you’ll be well and truly on Fiji time.

Our favourite things to see and do SIGATOKA TOWN – This colourful town tucked into green and fertile surrounds near the mouth of the Sigatoka River makes for a pleasant amble. There’s a produce market, a few souvenir shops and a large hilltop mosque, but largely it’s a service town for the Coral Coast region. Taxis galore populate the street so you shouldn’t have any difficulty getting from A to B. SIGATOKA SAND DUNES – One of Fiji’s natural highlights. The dunes are quite spectacular and a great place to stretch out. On a hot day visit before 11am or after 3pm and allow about one hour for the walking tour. KULA ECO PARK – This wildlife sanctuary is a must for fans of the furred, feathered and scaled. See the hawksbill sea turtles being hand fed, and see collared parrots, falcons, fruit bats and more! The park runs a number of invaluable breeding programmes. HORSE RIDING ALONG NATADOLA BEACH – The local villagers offer horse riding (about F$10 per person) along the spectacular white sands of Natadola Beach. You might even get time for a dip here but take care as the currents and undertow can be dangerous at times.

BIAUSEVU WATERFALLS – Choose either the self-drive option (if you have a rental car) our take a guided tour. We’d recommend the guided tour which is informative. On the tour you’ll visit the home of a village chief and take part in an authentic ceremony. You’ll learn about traditional plant medicines and you can swim in the therapeutic waters and mystical tranquillity of the magnificent natural setting. KALEVU CULTURAL CENTRE – Located close to the Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort. The centre is based on a Fijian Village featuring cultural dancing, kava ceremonies, handicrafts and cooking. Also on-site is Bernies Bar and Gecko Restaurant that cooks up great steaks and fish curries. TAVUNI HILL FORT – A fascinating remnant of ancient Fiji on a hilltop just 4km from Sigatoka, cared for by the villagers of nearby Naroro. It’s a National Archeological Site, right off the beaten track. Magnificent views too!

Driving in Fiji is easy and lots of fun! You’ll get to experience the “real” Fiji as you pass through local villages, small towns and sugar cane fields along Fiji’s famous Coral Coast – but be careful of wandering animals and locals. Avis provides competitive rates on a wide range of vehicles. Pick up and drop off fees may apply at some locations. With a car at your disposal you will be able to enjoy the ton of activities that the Coral Coast has to offer at your own pace, so get out and enjoy!
This multiple “award winning” park is nestled in the valley floor about 500 metres from Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort. It’s Fiji’s only wildlife park and displays reptiles, a fine collection of rainbow – feathered tropical birds, sea turtles, tropical fish, live corals, fruit bats and much more! Take the camera along and have pictures taken with endangered Fijian iguanas and snakes and if you plan your visit around 11am, 1pm and 3.30pm you can help hand feed the Hawksbill Sea Turtles as well. The park is exclusively funded by gate receipts. Your visit helps fund the breeding programme for endangered species.
Unable to leave those golf clubs at home, or maybe you want to try golfing for the first time? Either way, you might like to spend a day on a golf course which is to die for, and offers facilities that rival the very best. With beautifully manicured golf greens undulating into challenging sand bunkers and traps, this stunning course with fantastic ocean views from 15 of the 18 holes will be amongst the most talked about courses in the world. With such views, keeping your concentration will certainly be a challenge!

Sigatoka River Safari
Off Road Cave Safari
Robinson Crusoe Island Cultural Day Trip
Not just for the adrenalin junkies! An excursion away from the beach that is definitely worth adding to your holiday ‘to-do’ list is an exhilarating jet boat trip up the Sigatoka River. As you can imagine, blasting through thickly forested river valleys is thrilling, but there’s more to experience here than a white-knuckle ride. You’ll also be introduced to the culture of Fijian village life, sharing a bowl of kava in a traditional ceremony and listening to the legends of Fiji that you may not have heard about before.
Ideal for both the young and young at heart. After being transferred across the Sigatoka River, hop on your ATV and head into the heart and soul of Fiji. As you head inland towards the caves your guide will amaze you with information relating to the culture, customs and heritage of the Fiji Islands. On arrival you will be treated to a traditional Fijian welcoming ceremony (with kava!) and then led on a tour of the caves. After the tour, enjoy a barbecue lunch and the opportunity for a dip in the local swimming hole.
This daytrip has it all, everything from a cannibal attack on your approach to the island to a firewalking/dance show and a jungle bush walk. You’ll learn about Fijian cooking “lovo” style before enjoying a sumptuous lovo feast and tropical fruits. Then board the boat for a short trip out to the magnificent coral reef for a spot of snorkelling – you may be lucky enough to see the turtles. Then there’s the heartfelt Isa Lei farewell song from the staff before heading back down the Tuva River to homebase near Sigatoka Town.

Fiji Islands Imagine a tropical island where there’s fun for the entire family: fun kids clubs, great food. Doesn’t appeal? What about a boutique luxury island haven with enough beaches for you to have one to yourself? A little beyond your price range? Then how about cheerful dormitory-style accommodation or a traditional thatched bure? Of course, 1500km of white sand beaches aren’t the only attraction, there are also coral gardens, turtles to feed and a wide variety of watersports. Or just kick back and enjoy yourself. As remote as some of these islands are, getting there doesn’t have to be an allday experience (unless you want it to be). Opt for a seaplane or even a helicopter and you’ll realise that getting there is easy – it’s leaving that’s difficult!

Welcome to the
Yasawa Islands
Yes, the Yasawas are all-out gorgeous, and if being a little out of step with the rest of the world appeals to you, you’re going to love it here. It’s even more relaxed than Fiji’s other tourist spots; we like to describe it as going back a couple of decades, bula time. In fact, a couple of actual decades ago, these islands were regarded as seriously remote. But that’s just the start of their appeal. They have some of the most beautiful beaches on earth – fabulous stretches of white sand, facing dazzling turquoise and blue lagoons. All the resorts are small and a stay here means a complete departure from the world of commerce – no shops, no banks, no traffic, no tension. Just peace, quiet and stunning surroundings. Lodgings range from clean and comfortable backpackers to total luxury but they all have one thing in common: the friendliest service you’re ever likely to find. So, where are these magical isles? Around three hours northwest of Nadi by sea, aboard the Yasawa Flyer, better known as ‘the yellow boat’. We advise you to book in advance, as there is only one voyage daily and it’s very popular, with grand views all the way. If you’re in a hurry and want to splurge, you can fly from Nadi. Once you’ve staked your claim to a stretch of beach, what is there to do? Lazing tops the list, followed by swimming, snorkelling, sailing, fishing, kayaking, diving and (one of our favourites) hiking. There are marvellous hikes in this region: go with a guide, or go it alone. Village visits are a must, and we highly recommend attending a Sunday church service. There are some magnificent natural attractions too, including the Blue Lagoon – not really a lagoon at all, but a beautiful stretch of water almost enclosed by islands. The lagoon has some famous attractions of its own, including the Sawa-i-Lau limestone caves. Whatever you decide to do with your time in the Yasawas, we can promise you one thing: you’ll wish you had a whole lot more of it!

Perfect name for a perfect Pacific paradise! This is the newest Yasawa resort: a wonderful, 4.5-star property that has been planned to… yes, perfection. Big, beautiful bungalows and villas provide superb accommodation, with a choice of beachfront or garden and several size options. Each has locally handcrafted furniture and stylish fittings, with luxury extras including (unusual for the Yasawas) television.
This outstanding resort is an international ‘traveller’s choice’ winner, with the emphasis on 5-star luxury, romance and peaceful privacy. It has a dreamlike setting over three bays on the Yasawas’ quietest island, Yaqeta, providing every comfort you could wish for. We hardly need say it’s the perfect honeymoon retreat, and also has top rankings with some of the world’s most influential travel publications, including Condé Nast and Vogue.
Plenty of activities are on offer, including daily yoga classes, cooking lessons, guided hikes and fishing – to name a few. There’s also a relaxing spa. Guests are welcomed with a kava ceremony, and on Friday night staff members stage a fun-filled meke, as a thank-you for the resort’s humanitarian projects towards their village. Don’t miss it!
There are just nine bures, with two Garden Bures, one of which has a sea view, the Beachfront Bures are dotted along one of the bays, and the Grand Bures enjoy another very secluded beach location. There’s plenty to do, including free daily yoga classes, a spa, coral gardening on the reef, kayaks, walks and cultural activities.

Yasawa Island Resort & Spa The thing we like most about Yawasa Island Resort & Spa is that whilst every feature of your stay is about indulgence, from the food and wine selection to your accommodation, the mood remains casual and relaxed. There is no need for high heels, handbags or suits here! On an island as remote as this you can have all the space you want, with just 18 beachfront bungalows hidden among the shady palms, each one just a few steps from the beach, your privacy is guaranteed. For the ultimate experience choose the gorgeous Lomalagi bure. The name says it all – Lomalagi is the Fijian word for heaven and you couldn’t be any closer to it than this. Hidden from the rest of the resort at the end of a deserted white sand beach, Lomalagi is a private retreat with its own horizon pool overlooking the ocean. If bringing the kids along is a ‘must’ then the two bedroom Family Bure has been designed with families in mind.
Dining at the resort is sure to leave you sated. Dine at the restaurant beside the pool, on the beach beneath the stars or in the comfort of your own bure. A table for two can be arranged almost anywhere at Yasawa, you just have to name the place. A speciality of the resort is the succulent seafood, which is caught daily in the waters surrounding the resort. There’s plenty to do with all motorised and non-motorised activities complimentary (excluding diving, fishing and spa). Swim, snorkel or even better enjoy a romantic picnic at any one of 11 deserted beaches, kayak, enjoy tennis or indulge in the Ultimate Spa Bonus for only $420 per person and enjoy a 50 minute spa treatment every day of your stay. And if you have a desire to connect with the outside world, there’s complimentary internet WiFi access in the main complex, bar and restaurant. PRICE GUIDE FROM: $785 (Minimum 3 night stay)

Fiji’s North The pace of life in Fiji is seldom hectic, but in the northern islands of Vanua Levu and Taveuni, you’ll find that life becomes even more relaxed. These islands are just an hour’s flight from Nadi or Suva, but as you explore the shops and historic waterfront of Savusavu, you’ll feel as though you’ve taken a trip back in time. The region is also the home of Fiji’s eco-tourism movement, which means you’ll find small resorts that endeavour to combine tranquillity and luxury with ecological values. From the way the resorts are constructed to the educational nature of their kids clubs, the whole family will come away with a new appreciation for this amazing environment, and the marine sanctuaries that have been established ensure that the snorkelling and diving is just as fabulous as the fishing.
Our favourite things to see and do SAVUSAVU TOWN – Not too long ago Savusavu was a small and dusty peninsular town with fabulous views across the bay. The views haven’t changed but in recent years the population has grown and now the main street has good restaurants, lively bars and well stocked shops. Yachties continue to arrive with numbers outgrowing moorings. DIVING – Fiji’s North is world-renowned among divers and offers an endless variety of dive sites to suit all tastes and levels of experience. As a rule, while you can dive year round, the best diving is from May through to October. Visibility is not as good in January and February due to plankton blooms and northerly winds. With sites like the 32km long Rainbow Reef, The Great White Wall, the Zoo and Vuna Reef, it’s not hard to see why this area is a mecca for divers.

BIRD WATCHING – Taveuni is one of Fiji’s best locations for bird watching, with over 100 species of birds to be found here. Try Des Voeux Peak at dawn for a chance to see the rare orange dove and silktail. Along the Lavena Coastal Walk keep an eye peeled for parrots, flame doves, the Fiji goshawk and wattle honeyeater. FISHING – Fiji’s North has some of the best fishing spots in the South Pacific. The water around Savusavu in particular have abundant marlin, wahoo, tuna and other game fish. Sports fishing is popular in the region with a number of good charter boat operators to take you out amongst the serious fish. SAVUSAVU HOT SPRINGS – Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. The local women use these hot springs for cooking and if you visit during the afternoon you’ll see pots of root crops steaming away ready for the evening meal. BOUMA NATIONAL HERITAGE PARK – Coast and forest hiking and three famous waterfalls. If hiking sounds too hard, you can still see the first and best of the falls; it’s just a stroll from the visitor centre. Fitness fanatics can tackle the full-day Vidawa Rainforest trail. HORSE RIDING – Riding a horse through stunning scenery is something everyone should try at least once in their lifetime! There’s some really great trekking on offer on both Vanua Levu and Taveuni. So, even if you’ve never sat in a saddle before, go for it!

Suva & Surrounds If you really want to experience all the colour and diversity that Fiji has to offer, a stay in Suva is a must. The nation’s capital is the business hub of the region, and its colonial past is on display in buildings like the Old Town Hall and Holy Trinity Cathedral, but the overall vibe is pure Fijian. From the bustling and colourful markets to the variety of shops and restaurants in the city centre, you’ll find it a fascinating mix of colours and cultures. It’s also the source of one of Fiji’s most famous products, the Pure Fiji range of skincare. Drop into the factory for a tour and pick up some goodies to bring home. When you’ve seen enough of the city itself, Fiji’s adventure capital of Pacific Harbour is just an hour’s drive to the west. It’s easy to experience all that Fiji has to offer in one great holiday.
Our favourite things to see and do COLO-I-SUVA-FOREST PARK – 11km from downtown Suva, this lush rainforest park has 6½km of walking trails that navigate natural pools and gorgeous vistas, and birdlife fills the park. The rope swings over the water are fun, as are the stone steps across the streams.
3
THURSTON GARDENS – Built on the site of the original town of Suva that was burned in 1843 in one of the bloodiest fights in Fiji’s history, the gardens are well worth a wander through. Walking trails traverse the gardens and bench seating provides sensory – fatigue relief. It’s a lovely spot for a picnic under the historical fig trees.

Fiji Museum
MALT HOUSE BREWERY & RESTAURANT – Enjoy some decent homebrew and even better food. The wood-fired pizzas go down well or tuck into the seafood and meat dishes. It’s never short of a happy crowd and worth the trek from downtown. NATIONAL STADIUM – Fijian’s are fanatical about their rugby and if you’re in the Suva area over the season, March to October, it’s worth getting along to a local game. The atmosphere is huge! SUVA CRAFT MARKET – The endless colourful stalls offer some great buys. You’ll find tapa cloth, wooden carvings, woven baskets, mats, purses, fans and traditional clay pots – but be prepared to bargain! FIJI MUSEUM – Forget boring. This museum is a must. You’ll see the whole of Fijian culture here, including music, dance, cooking, clothing, weapons, boats (there’s even a bit of the Bounty) and – let’s be honest – cannibalism, although this is extremely hard to equate with the friendly Fiji of today! GOVERNOR’S GOURMET COFFEE HOUSE AND RESTAURANT – Who wouldn’t love this place? Great foot, great prices and a really great ambience. Go for breakfast, lunch or dinner (dinner on Thursday or Friday only; Friday nights are particularly fab).

A quiet hillside location with harbour and city views, close to the city centre and an easy drive from the airport, makes Tanoa Plaza an ideal base in Suva. This hotel is small enough to be personal and welcoming, large enough to feel cosmopolitan and offers the only boutique accommodation in the Fijian capital. The museum and historic Thurston Gardens are an easy walk away and well worth a visit. There are three types of accommodation at the hotel: Superior and Deluxe rooms and spacious Executive Suites, which all have balconies with excellent views. The suites, located at the top of the hotel, offer extra space and additional luxuries, including a king-size bed, a marble bathroom with spa bath, and a panoramic outlook over city and sea. The Tanoa Plaza has a full range of services for both holiday and business travellers, and a popular restaurant offering Pacific Rim cuisine. There’s a bar, a library, shopping, and a swimming pool, and room service is available around the clock.
The Queens Road leads out of Suva along the shores of the harbour, reaching beautiful Lami Bay and this popular international hotel, 15 minutes to the west. Built right by the sea, with views of nearby Snake Island and the Bay of Islands, Novotel Suva Lami has smart, well appointed rooms with water views. If you’re staying for a day or two, there’s a rewarding hike up Mount Korobaba, or, if you’d rather just take things easy, the hotel has an excellent full-service spa with a big range of therapies. There’s also a fitness centre and a large outdoor pool with a poolside bar. Nearby you’ll find fishing, golf, surfing, squash, a running track and numerous other sporting activities, including tennis and mountain biking. Husk, the hotel restaurant, has a comprehensive menu, and, weather permitting, al fresco dining can be arranged.

Fiji for Families
Everyone knows that the Fijian Islands are the perfect destination for a great family holiday – beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters (great for snorkelling), warm sunny weather, some of the friendliest people in the world and an endless supply of fun things to do. With Fiji literally on our doorstep – only a three hour flight away – it’s not hard to see why this destination is a Kiwi favourite. The Fijian people have such a natural love of children and a strong affinity for the family; from the moment they arrive, kids will feel welcomed and relaxed and will return home with fond memories. The resorts we feature in this section are Fiji’s most popular resorts with families of all ages. The toughest choice for you may be deciding which island or mainland family holiday to take! Generally speaking if you’re looking for a family beach holiday to get away from it all, the island resorts have the best beaches with most offering safe swimming and snorkelling in front of your bure. If you’re wanting a more active holiday with lots of interesting activities and cultural experiences then consider staying on Fiji’s mainland, Viti Levu – you’ll still be able to take day trips out to the islands. Denarau Island, home to several 5-star resorts and just 20 minutes from Nadi International Airport, has become a favourite family stop with fantastic pool complexes. Whatever your choice, the resorts featured in this section offer plenty of amenities and activities to keep the whole family happy. And one more thing. You’ll find that a number of our resorts have excellent kids clubs and special facilities just for younger family members (check our Accommodation Facilities Guide at the back of the brochure). So, while family fun remains the priority, you’ll be able to have some precious time to yourself. After all, it’s your holiday too!

Kids Fun! •
Learn the local lingo – it’s always fun to try and the locals love it! At the very least learn to say Bula (hello) and Vinaka (please and thank you).
•
Take Mum and Dad to a Meke (traditional Fijian dance and song) and try some local food like taro and breadfruit in a lovo (feast cooked underground, like the NZ hangi). The Fijians also make excellent kokoda (raw fish marinated in lime juice and mixed with coconut milk) – yummy!
•
Go snorkelling and get up close and personal with many friendly, vibrant and tropical fish. If you’re old enough you may be able to learn to scuba dive in the resort pool.
•
Visit a local village if you can, to learn how the locals live and to check out their bures (traditional Fijian thatched hut).
•
Meet up with some of the local kids. Make sure to get their address so that you can write to them when you return home.
•
Watch the geckos wandering the walls and ceilings of buildings – they’re fun to watch and do a great job of keeping the mozzie population down.
