While there are some similarities between Hong Kong, Macao & China, there are mainly differences as big as night and day. In Hong Kong, you’ll be dazzled by the stunning harbour and feel energised by a combination of the urban, the rural and the water. You’ll have easy access to Western shops and a modern transport system. Macao retains an old-world charm, with a unique Chinese and Portuguese heritage. Among Macao’s treasures is the UNESCO World Heritagesite, “The historic centre of Macao”, the area boasts impressive architecture and temples. China is the world’s most populous country and in the bustling cities, it certainly feels it. It has vast landscapes of mountains, deserts and grassland too, each with a dialect of Mandarin and is home to historical sites thousands of years old that are a wonder to behold. Hong Kong runs on Cantonese and English conversations, has more freedom when it comes to internet use and offers a world of exquisite, mouth-watering international dining options. These should be on your itinerary, and with them being neighbouring countries, make sure you visit all three and spot the differences for yourself.

1 / FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD
Glazed and syrup-coated, Chinese cuisine will have you salivating at the thought of it, especially traditional Peking duck. Attracting an almost cult-following, it’s best enjoyed in Beijing - with lashings of sweet bean sauce. With a little nod to its British past, Hong Kong delivers one of the best high teas in Asia at the renowned Peninsula Hotel. Whether you’re at a sizzling side-street wok or in a traditional Pastelaria on the well-known Rua do Cunha (Food Street), there is much of Macao’s mouthwatering cuisine to savour. Don’t leave China, mainland or otherwise, without eating your own weight in dumplings. Try Xiaolongbao in the Jiangnan region (and Shanghai especially) which are unbeatable. Steamed in small bamboo baskets they’re lightly ‘soup-filled’, so you get a good dose of meat as well as jus.

3 / FOR THE KID IN ALL OF US Hong Kong Zoo opened in 1871 and includes the city’s lush botanical gardens, located on the Northern slope of Victoria Peak. Admire an inner-city sanctuary framed by skyscrapers and then head to the playground and aviaries. As with Disneylands everywhere, kids and adults love them! Indulge in a whimsical holiday when you venture to Hong Kong Disneyland or Shanghai Disneyland, or why not make your mark at both!
Put Hong Kong’s Temple Street Night Market on your list as it’s a mix of traders, talent and fortune tellers. Weave from vendors to opera singers, and endless festivity. Nanjing Road is the world’s longest shopping street at six kilometres and is Shanghai’s main shopping area, home to parks, People’s Square, museums, galleries and opera houses. Shanghai also has the pedestrianised Xin Tian Di Street filled with boutiques and restaurants and since western influence is rife, big US chain stores amidst it all.

At night the skyline of Shanghai sparkles like an enormous fairground. Make a beeline for the Bund’s Bar Rouge, while the dazzling views from Hyatt’s VUE bar are only matched by an equally stunning décor. In Hong Kong you’ll want to enjoy incredible 360-degree views of Victoria Harbour from the 100th floor of Hong Kong’s tallest building - the International Commerce Centre (ICC). On the other side of the harbour, visit a free-of-charge Hong Kong viewpoint on the 55th floor of IFC Tower 2.
5 / EXPLORE THE WATERWAYS
Areas can take a on a whole new persona when seen from the water. Add in night when the lights can guide you and it is different again! Hong Kong’s Star Ferry has been operating for over 120 years and is a cheap way see knockout views of Victoria Harbour, especially come nightfall. Suzhou, a city west of Shanghai, is best known for its canals, bridges and waterways. Dubbed the ‘Venice of China’, it’s defined by ornate gardens and Asian pagodas. In Shanghai, the Huangpu River divides the city into two parts: Puxi to Pudong. You can get between them via Shanghai’s century old ferry boats. The sweeping skyline views are breath-taking.

Hutongs are a type of alleyway typical to northern China, and particularly Beijing. They’re also the best way to experience ‘Old Beijing’ at its traditional best. A relic that time forgot, get lost in a China built centuries past, amongst crooked old houses and children chasing rickshaws down the street. From traditional Asia to a street influenced by a very western concept: Las Vegas, Macao’s Cotai Strip boasts multiple hotel-casinos all lining the Cotai section of Macao. As glitzy as its US cousin, the lights never go out here. And then there’s Hong Kong come nightfall. If you consider this city busy by day, it really revs it up a gear from dusk. There’s a distinct ‘work-hard, play-hard’ ethic here, and tourists are fully encouraged to partake. Dine, dance or simply enjoy the raucous ambience, but sleep is not an option.
EXPERIENCE HONG KONG
Hong Kong is literally a living fusion of traditional Eastern and Western cultures. It’s fast paced with a dazzling array of high rise buildings, neon lights and billboards. Split into two by the harbour, Hong Kong has two main regions – Kowloon and Hong Kong Island.
For such a compact island, Hong Kong Island carries plenty of punch as a holiday destination. Explore the many shopping options, restaurants and bars around Central district and take a journey to the Peak for a bird’s eye view of the island and beyond. Venture to Stanley Markets, marvel over the temples at Aberdeen or dine on seafood at Repulse Bay.
A tourist hot spot, Kowloon’s famous Nathan Road and its ‘Golden Mile’ are a magnet for bargain hunting shoppers and diners. Tsim Sha Tsui is one of Hong Kong’s major entertainment areas, popular both during the day and after dark. Visit the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the Hong Kong Space Museum before venturing to the Peninsula for its world renowned High Tea.
While she feels like a cosmopolitan city, under her contemporary exterior is a traditional Chinese lady at heart. Peer down from Victoria Peak, wind your way through the streets of Mongkok, bag a bargain at the markets, and without a doubt the harbour is the centrepiece, with its dazzling skyline and nightly ‘Symphony of the Lights’ fireworks and laser light extravaganza.

Catch the Tram up to the Peak – Enjoy the classic Hong Kong tradition and take in some of the best views across the city. In the funicular, try to sit on the right hand side for the best views on the way up.
Harbour Light Show – Victoria Harbour is dazzling all on its own, but each night the city puts on a ‘Symphony of Lights’ which involves more than 40 buildings on both sides of the harbour. Recognised in the Guinness World Records as the world’s largest permanent light and sound show, there are laser beams and searchlights that perform an unforgettable light spectacle synchronised to music.
Hullett House – Dine at the prized Loong Toh Yuen Cantonese restaurant. The highly acclaimed chef scours the markets for new tastes and ingredients, adding his own contemporary interpretation to Cantonese cuisine.
Giant Buddha – No trip to Hong Kong would be complete without a visit to the Giant Buddha which sits serenely atop Ngong Ping plateau amid the spectacular mountain scenery of Lantau Island. Climb more than 200 steps or take the Ngong Ping 360 cableway from Tung Chung to the culturally themed village.
Ladies’ Market – Featuring over 100 stalls of bargain clothing, accessories and souvenirs and stretching one kilometre. Be sure to practice your haggling skills to bag the best bargain.
Lan Kwai Fong – One of Hong Kong’s most popular nightlife hot spots and home to over 90 restaurants and bars. Hosting carnivals and celebrations throughout the year, this area comes alive.
Harbour Cruise – Victoria Harbour is Hong Kong’s heart, so to catch the real essence jump onboard a harbour cruise. From a hop on hop off tour, to sunset cruises, experience Hong Kong in the most unique way.

Located just a 55 minute Turbojet ride from Hong Kong, on the western side of the Pearl River Delta. Featuring 25 UNESCO Heritage-sites Macao sure is something special. Split into two separate islands connected by three bridges, Macao Peninsula itself and the islands of Taipa and Coloane now connected by the reclaimed land of Cotai. Originally settled by the Portuguese, you’ll see their influence everywhere, from the street names, to classic Mediterranean architecture and fantastic food. City of Dreams – Don’t miss the must-see show ‘The House of Dancing Water’ – the world’s largest water extravaganza. This breath-taking show is staged in the purpose-built Dancing Water Theatre which features approximately 2000 seats. This state-of-the-art theatre provides the setting for an epic love story and spectacular journey through time, showcasing dazzling costumes, special effects and record breaking acts never seen before in theatre.
Macanese Cuisine – Famous on the island are the Macanese tarts. These egg tarts are a justifiable dessert to a wonderful menu, which were introduced to the island by the Portuguese.
Barra Square, Lilau Square and Senado Square – Are among a host of fascinating districts like the iconic Ruins of St. Paul’s, once the largest Catholic Church in Asia. Also arousing interest are the Chinese treasures of Na Tcha Temple, Lou Kau Mansion and the much photographed A-Ma Temple on the peninsula’s waterfront.
Macao Tower – Home to one of the highest bungy jumps in the world and AJ Hackett recreation facilities, it also has a range of dining outlets, shops and the observation deck.
Pedicab Ride – Once a symbol of Macao, these are now used for visitors to slowly stroll in this World Heritage city. Head to the Pedicab Station at Praca de Ferreira Amaral (opposite Hotel Lisboa).

Highlights worth seeing along the way
A-Ma Temple – A temple dedicated to the Chinese sea goddess Mazu who blesses the fishermen. It is said that she could predict good and bad luck so after her death she often helped the fishermen ward off danger. This is the oldest temples in Macao, built in 1488, and offers silence and spectacular views.
Ruins of St. Paul – Before being destroyed by a fire in 1835 during a typhoon this building was one of the largest Catholic churches in Asia dedicated to St. Paul the Apostle.
Macao Shopping – Due to its duty free status Macao is a shopper's paradise. Head to Senado Square for clothing, shoes and cosmetics. Red Market to Flora Garden is another main shopping area, here you’ll find jewellery, cameras and electronics.

The Bund – The famous Shanghai waterfront, regarded as the symbol of Shanghai for hundreds of years, is a celebration of China’s diversity. The most attractive sight on the west side are the 26 various buildings of different architectural styles including Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Classicism and Renaissance. Not what you’d expect in China.
Giant Pandas – How can you resist the beautiful faces of China’s oldest inhabitants? These cuddly bears are the national emblem of China and their protection is a top priority for China. The Chengdu Panda Research Base is home to 80 pandas and set up to resemble their natural surroundings of their original home in north Sichuan.
The Great Wall of China – Stretching almost 9000 kilometres long from the Gobi Desert in the west to the Bohai Sea in the east, this spectacular wall is one of China’s most famous attractions. Original construction began more than 2000 years ago to protect China from the nomad threat in the north, since then the Great Wall has been rebuilt and maintained and the majority of the existing wall is from the Ming Dynasty. The Wall is accessible from many different sections. Head to the Mutianyu or Juyongguan sections instead of Badaling as they are far less crowded. All three sections are in close proximity to Beijing.
Li River – Connecting the two beautifully picturesque spots of Guilin and Yangshuo and lined with tranquil blue waters, natural landscapes and views to die for. Highlights along the river include Elephant Trunk Mountain, a hill that resembles an elephant drinking water from the river and Seven Star Park, covering more than 120 hectares and featuring seven peaks.

Beijing is the thriving political and cultural heart of China and home to many remnants from China’s historical past. The Forbidden City contains the largest and best preserved collection of ancient buildings in China. CONSUMER GUARANTEES ACT
The guarantees under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 will apply to services supplied by us except where they are acquired, or held out as being acquired for business purposes.
1. OUR SERVICES AND OBLIGATIONS
1.1 House of Travel Ltd (‘we” or “us” as the case may be) supply services consisting of arranging and co-ordinating travel facilities and services, and making bookings and issuing vouchers to be redeemed by suppliers of travel, entertainment, and accommodation facilities or services (“Suppliers”). House of Travel Ltd is part of the House of Travel group.
1.2 We undertake to perform these services with reasonable care and skill. We will not be liable for any loss or damage which results from the act, default or omission of any person other than ourselves, our employees or agents, or any cause independent of human control. This includes (but is not limited to), loss or damage which arises directly or indirectly from any act of God, weather disruptions, dangers incidental to the sea, fire, breakdown in machinery or equipment, acts of Governments or other authorities de jure or de facto, wars whether declared or not, hostilities, civil disturbances, strikes, riots, deaths, pilferage, epidemics, quarantines or medical or customs regulations.
1.3 We are not able to exercise control over services we do not supply directly, therefore we will not be responsible for any loss or damage arising from:
• Any booking made directly with a service Supplier by your travel agent, or
• Any services which are not directly provided by us and which are additional to those recorded in clause 1.1 above.
1.4 We will endeavour to provide the most suitable travel arrangements to meet the particular requirements you make known to us. However, travel is an individual experience, and your preferences and opinions may vary from our own. For this reason, we cannot take responsibility for your individual satisfaction.
2. SUPPLY OF TRAVEL, ENTERTAINMENT AND ACCOMMODATION SERVICES AND FACILITIES
2.1 When we make bookings with Suppliers, we are acting as a booking agent for such Supplier.
2.2 All travel, entertainment, and accommodation facilities or services are supplied directly to you by the Suppliers. We have no control over the facilities or services themselves, or the manner in which they are provided by the Suppliers. Therefore you should be aware of the following conditions:
• We will not be liable for any loss or damage of any kind which may arise from your use or consumption of, or inability to use or consume those facilities or services.
• The provision of those facilities or services is subject to the terms and conditions of your contract with each Supplier.
• Where for any reason, a Supplier is unable to provide particular facilities or services, then that Supplier may be entitled, under its contract with you, to substitute those services or facilities with comparable or equivalent facilities or services without incurring any liability to you. You should check your contract with each Supplier.
• All facilities or services described by us are subject to availability from the Supplier.
• We will not be liable or responsible for any loss or damage relating to your baggage, personal possessions, health or welfare, or delays or travel disruptions unless these arise directly from the service we provide to you.
3. BUSINESS PURPOSES
You agree that where our services are acquired for business purposes, or where you hold yourself out as acquiring our services for business purposes, the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 will not apply to any supply of goods or services made under these conditions, and we will not be liable or responsible for any loss or damage of any kind to you, including any consequential loss or damage however it may be caused.
4. INFORMATION IN THIS BROCHURE
4.1 While we attempt to ensure that the contents of this brochure are correct, accurate, and up to date at the time of printing, the contents of this brochure are drawn from information supplied to us by Suppliers. We do not have, and cannot be reasonably expected to have, personal knowledge about all of the facilities or services provided by each Supplier.
4.2 Facilities or services may change after the date of printing. We endeavour to keep travel agents informed of any changes to information in this brochure which are brought to our attention. Prior to completing your booking, you should ask your travel agent whether they are aware of any changes to the published information. You should also make sure that if
your travel agent is advised of changes which occur after booking, your travel agent is able to contact you.
4.3 Maps and Photographs: Maps are shown for general information and may not necessarily reflect actual routings, locations or services provided. Photographs may show places in the geographic area which are not included in your booking. Hotel room photographs may not be the actual room occupied.
4.4 Property Information: Descriptions featured in this brochure are drawn from information provided by our Suppliers. Any facilities or services shown are subject to change at any time. Please advise your travel agent if you have any special requirements.
4.5 Room Bedding: Based on existing bedding in the room. Requests for specific bedding arrangements must be made at the time of booking but can not be guaranteed. For example, twin share may consist of single beds or a shared double bed.
4.6 Rental Cars: We cannot guarantee to provide a particular model or colour within the car category. Availability of car categories is subject to confirmation at the time of booking. We reserve the right to substitute different models. If a vehicle is returned prior to the end of the reserved rental period or if the vehicle is picked up later than the reserved date, NO REFUND will be made for unused rental days
5. PRICES
5.1 The prices provided are a guide only based on low season, per adult share twin and are correct at the time of printing. The actual price may differ to that indicated due to currency fluctuations, special events, trade shows or peak periods. Prices for tours are based on per adult per tour for share twin based on low season travel. Prices for cruises are per person for the complete cruise based on the lead-in cabin category on a low season sailing.
5.2 We will guarantee the price of the portion of the booking as processed by us, against currency fluctuation for a period of seven (7) days from the time of confirmation of the booking; note: special conditions apply for cruise bookings. It is the responsibility of your travel agent to advise you of the date of confirmation. If your booking remains unpaid after the seven (7) day guarantee period it will be subject to currency fluctuation, up to the time full payment is received by us.
5.3 Events beyond our control, such as changes to the prices of aviation fuel or changes to the cost of services or facilities may result in the prices charged to you being different from those shown in the brochure. You should check all prices with your travel agent before making reservations, and before ticketing.
5.4 Prices may also be liable to variation between the time of booking and the date of departure due to events beyond our control. Due to unforeseen events we reserve the right to vary the price up to the time of your departure.
6. HOUSE OF TRAVEL ACCOMMODATION RATINGS
To assist you with the selection of your accommodation, we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. Please note that these gradings are to be used as a guide only and may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. Please check with your House of Travel consultant to ensure you get the property that best suits your needs.
7. PAYMENT
7.1 A non-refundable deposit will be required by your travel agent and must be paid at the time of booking. This is in addition to any deposits imposed by Suppliers.
7.2 A communication charge may be made for bookings requested less than 72 hours prior to departure.
7.3 Final payment must be made in full before we can release travel documents (including tickets).
8. CANCELLATION
8.1 If you wish to cancel your booking for any reason, you must advise us in writing through your travel agent as soon as possible.
8.2 If you cancel your booking or any part of your booking, we will impose a cancellation fee in respect of each person travelling under that booking. You must also pay all cancellation fees imposed by Suppliers and your travel agent. These cancellation fees are required to offset booking, communication, and administrative charges which have already been incurred by us, Suppliers and your travel agent. Cancellation fees imposed by Suppliers and travel agents are beyond our control and you should check with your travel agent regarding what cancellation fees may be applicable.
8.3 We strongly recommend that you insure yourself fully against cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances. See Section 10.
9. RESERVATION AMENDMENTS
We are happy to incorporate any reasonable amendments you request. An amendment constitutes a change to an existing booking and will attract a $25 fee per amendment prior to final payment and the issuing of the travel documents, and a $50 fee per amendment after travel documents have been issued. These fees are to cover administration and communication costs. You may also be required to pay any Supplier imposed fees.
10. INSURANCE
We strongly recommend that you insure yourself fully against cancellation, loss of luggage and personal property, and medical expenses. Your travel agent will be able to provide you with further information.
11. ITEMS NOT COVERED
Unless otherwise specified, the cost of airfares, meals, drinks, laundry, insurance, sightseeing, transfers, local taxes, airport departure taxes, Airline imposed insurance levies, passenger service charges and Passport or Visa application fees are not included.
12. VISAS/PASSPORTS
For all holidays in this brochure you will require a valid passport. You are responsible for arranging your own passport, visa and health requirements including inoculation. You should check with your travel agent who will be able to provide you with the necessary information.
13. NON-USE OF SERVICES OR FACILITIES
If, of your own choice, you decide not to use part or parts of the arranged services or facilities, you will not be entitled to a refund from us (provided we have carried out our service with reasonable skill and care and to your requirements) and you may not be entitled to a refund from any Supplier.
14. HEALTH OR DISABILITY
Some Suppliers may reserve the right to refuse to carry or accommodate people who because of a health condition or disability may require services or facilities to be provided in a special manner. You should check this with your travel agent.
15. SERVICE SATISFACTION
During your holiday, if you encounter any situation where the service supplied to you does not meet your satisfaction, please take the matter up with the Supplier immediately. Your contract for each service is with the Supplier. If this is not possible immediately, or if you are still dissatisfied, please contact your travel agent. Both we and your travel agent will endeavour to investigate on your behalf and to negotiate with the Supplier to resolve the matter as soon as possible, so that you continue to enjoy your journey.
16. LEGAL CLAIMS
Any claims or legal action in connection with the provision of our services to you will be governed by the laws of New Zealand. Any claim or legal action against the Suppliers is likely to be subject to the terms of your contract with them, and may be governed by the laws of other countries.
