Short power naps are often taken in the early afternoon, typically after a lengthy lunch. Most businesses will close for a couple of hours, with families returning home to share a full meal together before taking an afternoon kip. This is partly due to the scorching mid-afternoon sun, which can get too hot for conducive work. By 4pm, businesses are ready to reopen and will often stay open well into the evening, when the nights, although balmy, are more agreeable.

1 / TAPAS TO PINTXOS AND MEZZE European dining is a social affair. Devouring what Kiwis would refer to as shared plates, they are traditionally known as tapas and mezze and are designed to encourage conversation. Tapas is essentially a variety of hot and cold dishes, best described as finger foods that are shared between diners. This could be while sitting at a sophisticated restaurant, or more commonly, while hunched over a bijou bar with friends. Similarly, pintxos (literally translates as thorns or spikes) is so-called because the bite-size foods are eaten with a cocktail stick; the shape of which indicates the price, and when you’re full, you simply pay by the number of skewers you’re left with. Mezze, albeit Turkish, is similar to Spanish tapas, with plenty of olives, feta, falafel, hummus and heavenly dips.

2 / MUSIC AND DANCE Europeans love to dance! By nature, the locals are both passionate and energetic, resulting in gregarious street parties. Flamenco’s home is Seville, in the heart of Andalucia, while next door, in Portugal, Fado music can be heard wafting through the narrow lanes of Bairro Alto’s old town. It mostly tells of heartbreak, but its melancholic notes are particularly stirring. Zorba, Greek belly dancing, can be found in both Greece and Turkey. This former folk dance is a mixture of fast and slow movements, with beguiling costumes and manoeuvres.

5 / ART AND DESIGN Whether you find it wacky or extraordinary, the works of Dali, Picasso and of course, Antoni Gaudi are forever fascinating. Visit Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia for a moment of sheer astonishment, or Parc Güell for equally impressive works on a smaller scale. Art lovers should weave both Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and Valencia’s The City of Arts and Sciences into their agenda. For architecture, Greece and Turkey have archaeological treasures littering every city, town and village. While in Portugal, marvel at the Azulejos (Portuguese ceramic tiles), they adorn Portugal’s charming townships, and they are quite simply beautiful.

4 / FEISTY FESTIVALS The Spanish love a fiesta. La Tomatina festival is the world’s largest tomato fight. Occurring annually on the last Wednesday in August, the little town of Buñol plays host to a gigantic food fight. Las Fallas Fire Festival, held in Valencia every March, encourages the neighbourhoods to build towering statues stuffed with fireworks. These statues (or ninots) can take months to construct, and then, once placed in strategic positions across the city, are set off over four nights. The 'Wine Battle' festival takes place in Haro in La Rioja region at the end of June.

6 / GET AMONGST THE MARKETS In Istanbul, you can peruse one of the oldest covered markets in the world, the infamous Grand Bazaar; a labyrinth of 60 streets and 5000 shops. Look out for one of the four main gates situated at the ends of its two major streets, otherwise you’ll get stuck inside for a decade. In Barcelona, look out for La Boqueria. A market for foodies, it’s crammed with butchers, fishmongers and greengrocers; loud sellers and even louder buyers; those cooking for a few, and those cooking for a few hundred; La Boqueria provides many Catalan restauranteurs with their produce. For touristy items, Greece’s Monastiraki Flea Market sells everything. Visit on a Sunday when the locals go, but leave by 11am - before the crowds become suffocating.

A mention of Spain conjures up vivid colour, stirring music, passionate people, a history both

glorious and tumultuous, and a fusion of ancient and new. About 500 years ago Spain was a world power and the home port of famed explorers such as Columbus and Cortés. Before that, for 800 years, Spain was ruled by the Muslim Moors. OUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO SEE AND DO

MADRID Madrid, Spain’s already beautiful, feisty capital is being further invigorated, the aim being a cosmopolitan centre to rival the world’s best. The development is not all bricks and mortar – Madrid is now officially one of the “greenest” cities in Europe, with flowers, fountains and trees springing up everywhere. What is unchangeable however, is Madrid’s cultural heritage: the Prado Museum houses one of the world’s greatest art collections, including masterpieces by Velasquez and Goya. The medieval Plaza Mayor is the place to be seen in the evening, order sangria and watch the passing parade. Browse in El Rastro, a flea market bursting with intriguing bric-a-brac. Save up energy for the evening though, because this is when Madrid comes alive.

Prado Museum – Home to some of Spain’s most famous artists like Goya, Dali and Gaudi as well as some of the world’s best like Picasso.

The Royal Palace – The Royal Family spend very little time there so it’s almost always open for you to wander through many of the rooms and banquet halls which are extremely lavish.

Retiro Park – Used to be the Royal Gardens and definitely worth wandering through or stopping for a picnic. There are many street musicians and performers, sidewalk painters, fortune tellers and jugglers to entertain you.

Plaza Mayor – It’s a wonderful big square which looks its best at night. It is full of cafés; sit and watch the world pass you by.

Shopping – Try Gran Via and Calle de Serrano for great shopping. El Corte Ingles, the Spanish department store chain, sells everything and the best sale time is MayJuly. Or stroll down Calle de Serrano for some excellent shoe shopping. Paseo de Recoletos & Atocha – Wander down the Paseo de Recoletos to the Atocha train station and see some wonderful fountains, cafés and sculptures.

The Rastro Flea Market – It’s a popular visit on a Sunday morning. It is also open on Saturday, which is generally quieter, and you never know what you are going to find. Just keep an eye out for pickpockets.

Flamenco – For a truly memorable experience book the dinner and show at Torres Bermejas. The dancers are passionate and you can’t help but be swept up in their emotional performance.

Plaza de Santa Ana – A great place to start out the night. The bars and clubs in and around the Plaza are popular with tourists and locals and really warm up around 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

BARCELONA Freddie Mercury put it this way: Barcelona, Like a Jewel in the Sun. It was a song entirely suited to a city that inspires passion and immense flights of imagination. Stand beneath the incomparable Sagrada Familia, the church that extraordinary architect Antoni Gaudi began working on in 1882 and remains a work in progress. Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, rejoices in Art Nouveau architecture too but there are also Gothic masterpieces. Wander the Cathedral cloisters in the footsteps of the Knights of the Golden Fleece. Stroll Las Ramblas – an 18th century thoroughfare of flowers, trees, cafés, street artists and markets. Barcelona comes into its own at night – bars, clubs and restaurants range from the chic to the Bohemian.

Sagrada Familia – This giant stunning Basilica, one of Gaudi’s greatest creations, started in 1882, is unfinished and has been under construction ever since.

Las Ramblas – A wide avenue running 1.2 kilometres north from the waterfront. Famous for its street stalls where you can buy everything from lottery tickets to jewellery. Alive with buskers, living statues, mimes and the itinerant. Gothic Quarter – The nucleus of old Barcelona. It’s a maze of interconnecting streets linking squares. Lots of cafés and bars as well as home to Barcelona Cathedral.

Park Güell – A Mr Güell commissioned Gaudi to build this magical park for local aristocracy with its amazing buildings, sculptures and tile work. It’s fantastic to wander around, you’ll need half a day but it is worth it.

Montjuic – This is a hill overlooking Barcelona and you can take the funicular up to the top. Why not go for a swim in the 1992 Olympic Games pool. It has some of the most stunning views overlooking the city.

The Waterfront – Before the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona cleaned up its waterfront area, tearing down old warehouses and buildings, replacing them with a fun esplanade and marina area which is a great spot for cycling or walking by day and dining by night.

La Pedrera – Another Gaudi masterpiece – a combined apartment and office block which looks like it should be at Disneyland. You can tour the building and go up onto the roof. There is also a small museum dedicated to Gaudi’s work.

La Font Màgica – In front of the Palau Nacional and not to be missed. You must go when it is dark for the best effect, it’s amazing and best of all it’s free. You can get a great view of the Palace, which is also illuminated at night.

La Boqueria – Don’t miss La Boqueria, one of Europe’s oldest food markets, crammed with seafood, fruit, vegetables and sweet treats. It’s best to visit the market early in the day to avoid the bustling crowds.

ANDALUCIA The strum of a guitar, the clack of a flamenco dancer’s feet, a waft of orange blossom on a Mediterranean breeze. Andalucia, encircled by mountains and sea, is one of Spain’s most beguiling regions. If its beaches are not enough of a temptation, Andalucia has three World Heritage cities and a culture that resonates with passion and energy. Flamenco was born here, as was the guitar (and Antonio Banderas). Seville is its large vibrant city, perhaps most famous for the Alcázar. Tapas barhopping is a favourite pastime. The second of the “Big Three”, Córdoba, claims a pearl of Moorish architecture, the Mezquita, and in Granada, Andalucia’s Islamic heritage reaches a pinnacle with the Alhambra palace and fortress.

Tapas – These are more than just snacks in Andalucia. BALEARIC ISLANDS In the Mediterranean Sea off the east coast of Spain sit the Balearic Islands. Majorca the largest island is a mix of resort towns and charming villages, white sandy beaches, fancy wines and cuisine. Menorca is the peaceful option, great for families and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. On Ibiza wander through hippy markets and whitewashed villages, for the more active try a jeep safari, jet boating or parasailing, at night watch the famous sunset and join the party. Catch the ferry to the small, beautiful island of Formentera, lounge on untouched beaches, explore cliffs and coves.

NORTHERN SPAIN Spain’s north-western corner, pounded by the Atlantic Ocean and separated from France by the ramparts of the Pyrenees, is off the beaten track. During medieval times the town of Santiago de Compostela and its cathedral attracted throngs of pilgrims, drawn to the tomb of St James the Apostle, which even today is regarded as the third most important Christian site after Rome and Jerusalem. This region is the gateway to the Basque country. La Rioja is a landscape of vineyards and its very famous Rioja wines. Bilbao is home to the Guggenheim Museum, housing 20th century artworks.

Highlights worth seeing along the way Explore Madrid’s Great Monuments – Among its highlights are the historic centre and the Prado Museum. San Lorenzo de El Escorial – This famous monastery is gigantic. Its attractions are the main chapel, Capilla Mayor, the Pantheon with the kings’ tombs, the Throne-Hall and the museum in the summer-palace. Valley of the Fallen – Near El Escorial, this colossal monument was built for the fallen of the Spanish civil war in 1940. It consists of a 150 metre cross on top of a rock which was hollowed out to incorporate a church. Final stop San Sebastián for a walking tour of the old town, panoramic views and time for some pintxos. Day 3: Vizcaya Coast Full day excursion to Vizcaya Bridge, heritage of humanity, pass Castle of Butron to Urdaibai and discover the secrets of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe from the lookout, a Game of Thrones location. In Bermeo, a typical fishing village, stop for a walking tour and pintxo tasting. Then Gernika, visit the Assembly House and Tree of Gernika. Afternoon walking tour of Bilbao’s old town. Day 4: Vitoria & Rioja Wine Region A tour of Vitoria, the capital city of the Basque Country, taste a typical sweet in a craft candy store. Then onto Rioja’s wine region with its typical villages dotted amongst a sea of vineyards. We enjoy a walking tour in Laguardia, one of the most beautiful villages of La Rioja. Learn about this world famous wine on a guided visit to a traditional cellar with wine tasting. Day 5: Bilbao Transfer to Bilbao airport or train station after breakfast.

Day 4: Costa del Sol – Granada Today Granada, the last stronghold of the Moorish Kingdoms up to 1492. Visit the world-famous Alhambra, its buildings, towers, palaces, patios and gardens make it one of the most visited monuments in Spain. Day 5: Granada – Toledo – Madrid Return to Madrid via the World Heritage City of Toledo, the “city of three cultures” where medieval Christian, Moorish and Jewish communities lived together peacefully and where you can see churches, mosques and synagogues in the historic quarter. Visit a Damasquinado factory before returning to Madrid.

The historic Camino de Santiago is an epic journey on foot across the north west of Spain, following the pathways of European priests, monarchs and peasants whose pilgrimages to the tomb of St James at Santiago de Compostela, spawned a Christian Renaissance.

The Northern Route is a beautiful walk along the Cantabrian Sea coastline. Lining the route are charming fishing villages, beautiful seaside resorts, the rugged peaks of the Picos de Europa and classic towns, rich in art and history.

Experience Spain on this independent holiday travelling between cities by rail, a great way to see the country at your own pace. Your accommodation and train tickets are included and you can tailor the itinerary by adding in your choice of sightseeing and activities.

Day 1: San Sebastián This seaside city is a renowned foodies paradise. Stroll down the Playa de la Concha and try some of the best pintxos in Spain.

Day 1-2: Barcelona Arrival transfer from the airport to your hotel. Add in a city tour to get your bearings, then explore at your own pace – La Boqueria markets, the Gothic quarter, incredible Gaudi architecture.

It was one of the busiest trunk roads in Europe during the 12th and 13th centuries when between 500,000 and two million devotees each year, from every part of Europe, walked, rode, or were carried along the ‘Camino’ to Santiago de Compostela. Today, walkers take approximately a month to complete the 800 kilometre journey from Roncesvalles Pass on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees or Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port on the French side. There are five stages. You can choose to do all five or only one or two. Stage 1: St-Jean-Pied-de-Port – Logrono (160km 9 days/8 nights) Begin your journey from the French side of the majestic Pyrenees. Stage 2: Logrono – Burgos (119km 7 days/6 nights) Walk through vineyards and orchards of Rioja. Stage 3: Burgos – Leon (156km 10 days/9 nights) Admire the stained-glass windows of Leon’s magnificent cathedral. Stage 4: Leon – O’Cebreiro (149km 9 days/8 nights) A high route dotted with classic stone villages, churches and convents. Stage 5: O’Cebreiro – Santiago de Compostela (153km 9 days/8 nights) The final stage, end at the shrine of St James in the magnificent cathedral at Santiago de Compostela.

Day 2: San Sebastián – Getaria (25km) Leave the Bay of Biscay and follow the coastline along grassy fields, past the Roman Church of San Martin de Tours and ancient whaling villages. Arrive in Getaria perched on a rock above a small harbour. Day 3: Getaria – Deba (18km) Follow the coast on a quiet rural road, then take a small path into farmland. Stop at the church of Santa Maria la Real, then through the village of Juan Sebastián Elcano before descending to a coastal retreat. Day 4: Deba – Markina (23km) Leave the coast for more mountainous landscapes. Cross a river, climb into dense vegetation and pass through delightful villages. Day 5: Markina – Gernika (25km) Follow a country lane, cross a river, then climb to the medieval monastery of Zenarruza. Continue up through woodland to the top of Gontzegarai then descend to a river and the historic town of Gernika. Day 6: Gernika – Lezama (21km) Pass Santa Luzia Zallo before a steep climb. Follow a cobbled path to the village of Morga then descend along scenic tracks and roads. Day 7: Lezama – Bilbao (14km) Cross farmland, then climb Mount Avril for views of Bilbao and the valley. In Bilbao, visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Begon, Place de Unamuno and the Guggenheim Museum.

Spain by Rail 11 days/10 nights

Day 3-4: Madrid Transfer to the train station for your highspeed train to Madrid and transfer to your Madrid hotel on arrival. While in Madrid check out one of the three major museums; the Prado, Reina Sofia or Thyssen-Bornemisza, have a drink in a rooftop bar overlooking Plaza de Santa Ana, and eat churros at Chocolateria San Gines. Day 5-6: Seville Transfers included and high-speed train to Seville. While in Seville go to a flamenco performance, the guitar music and dance gets into your soul. Eat tapas with locals in the Trianon district and do a tour of the Alcázar and Cathedral. Day 7-8: Córdoba Transfers and high-speed train to Córdoba, add on a visit to the Mezquita, the Mosque Cathedral with its unique stripe design. Day 9-10: Malaga Today train to Malaga, a popular tourist resort on the Costa del Sol. Spend these days totally relaxing on the beach. Day 11: Madrid Take the high-speed train to Madrid and transfer to the airport.

Day 8: Bilbao Arrangements end after breakfast.

The Portuguese were once famed for their seafaring and trading, so perhaps they have a natural

affinity with travellers, even though for decades they were somewhat neglected by visitors to Europe. That is changing now, and for good reason, as people discover the distinctive culture and landscapes of olives, almonds, cork trees, vineyards, windmills and unspoilt villages. In Lisbon, its capital, take time to wander through the narrow streets of Bairro Alto or Alfama. Beyond Lisbon lies Sintra, known as one of Portugalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most beautiful towns, with its fairy tale palace, crumbling villas with wrought-iron balconies festooned with flowering vines, and verdant forests. There are also kilometres of beaches, the most famous of which are along the Algarve and Costa do Sol, and the infamous surf beach Nazare, medieval monasteries and hills dotted with castles and wild flowers. Braga, with its Baroque churches, is known as the Rome of Portugal. LISBON The views from the ramparts of the Castle of St George are among the best on offer in a city where spectacular views are practically a dime a dozen. You may prefer to scale the 28 metre Monument to Christ to look back across the Tagus River at the city, or the Discoveries Monument for a bird’s eye view of Belem. Lisbon’s World Heritage-listed sites pay tribute to its seafaring past: Belem Tower was a starting point for many of the Voyages of Discovery from the 16th century onwards, and Jeronimos Monastery contains countless motifs of explorations.

Alfama – Time has stood still here, washing hangs out to dry from balconies, caged birds are brought outside for some air, and in the evenings the strains of Fado waft out from cafés. The maze of medieval alleys and streets are carved into the hillside.

Pastéis de Belém – These delicious custard tarts have been made here by hand since 1837 using an ancient recipe from the Jerónimos Monastery. These are the original Pastéis de Nata.

Fado – This music is melancholic and the essence of Portugal. Fado means fate, and its songs tell of heartbreak and longing.

Dining Experience at a José Avillez restaurant – A great Portuguese chef with several restaurants in Lisbon and Porto, our favourites are Barrio do Avillez, Mini Bar and Michelin star Belcanto.

Castle of St George – Climb the hill or take tram 28 to visit this castle on top of the tallest of Lisbon’s seven hills for spectacular views over the city. The oldest parts date back to the 6th century and inside the walls are promenades, gardens, houses and a church.

Riverside Dining at Doca de Alcantara – Under the River Tagus Bridge, these old barns once used for boating equipment have been converted into magnificent restaurants and bars.

Walk or tram up to a Mirador – There are many amazing viewpoints in the city, Miradouro de Graça has views over the city and the castle, is an open-air café, and a favourite with locals especially late afternoon.

Overlooking the Eduardo VII Park in a quiet area of Lisbon, you’ll enjoy its peaceful green surroundings. It’s a short walk to the Marquês de Pombal subway station then it’s only about 5 minutes to the old town with its fantastic squares.

This gorgeous 18th century townhouse is set in Lisbon’s historic city centre and on the main avenue - Avenida Liberdade. Pena Palace, the unique fairy tale Romanticist castle in the Sintra Mountains is a must visit. You will visit Pena Palace, have some free time to explore the town of Sintra and its National Palace. Return to Lisbon along the picturesque Estoril Coast stopping at Roca Cape, the westernmost point of continental Europe, and Cascais.

PORTO The heart of the city is the Ribeira district, the rambling old town is a UNESCO World Heritage-site and is filled with ancient houses, beautiful buildings adorned with tiles, family run restaurants, cafés and bars, and sloping narrow cobbled streets. The Douro river meanders through the city, crossed by magnificent bridges joining Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia. The boats, carrying barrels of the Port wine produced in this region, pull up to the vast cellars in Gaia that stretch along the banks of the river Douro where the port is still stored and matured.

Azulejo tiles – Dating back to the 13th century Azulejos came with the Moors. You can see them decorating all kinds of public and private buildings, both inside and out. Some are beautiful simple tiles, others tell stories. Visit the 19th century São Bento Railway Station and see the 20,000 Azulejo tiles decorating the walls portraying scenes of Portuguese history, daily life and transportation.

Café Majestic – Have coffee in the most elegant café in Porto. Inspired by the French Belle Epoque, this café still has the charming grandeur of the old world.

Livraria Lello Bookshop – Visit one of the most magnificent book shops in the world. The Neo-Gothic architecture, stunning design, intricate decoration and volumes of books are incredible, but the centrepiece is the beautiful red Art Nouveau staircase, said to have inspired the one in Hogwarts.

Francesinha – Porto’s iconic dish the Francesinha is not for the faint hearted, it is a ‘sandwich’ of sorts which contains sausage, ham, beef, is covered with cheese and a special tomato based sauce with beer and piri piri hot sauce. Sometimes it comes topped with a fried egg. Bring your appetite!

Porto Tonico – Porto’s answer to the Aperol Spritz or G&T is White Port, poured over ice and topped with tonic water and a slice of citrus. A very refreshing aperitif.

Clérigos Tower – Climb the 225 steps up what was once the tallest building in Portugal. The tower itself is quite impressive, in Baroque style with influences of Tuscan bell towers, but the panoramic views over the city are incredible.

Highlights worth seeing along the way Castelo de Vide – Market day is on a Friday when the town transforms from a relaxed to a very vibrant place with locals selling their produce, everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to fish, cheese and ceramics. Bom Jesus do Monte – On the outskirts of Braga, is this pilgrimage site with a magnificent 166 metre Baroque stairway. It is perched high on a hillside surrounded by gorgeous gardens and hidden grottoes and is accessible by funicular, by car or on foot. Temple of Diana, Evora – Not to be missed is this Roman structure dating from the 1st or 2nd century AD. It is stunning in the evening light. Pena Palace, Sintra – Built in 1840, this is definitely worth seeing. However we recommend you pre book tickets in order not to miss out. You can visit the park and palace terraces or pay a little more and get into the State Rooms inside. Some Local Specialties – Sardinhas Assadas (Grilled Sardines) and Bacalhau (Salted Cod Fish) served with salads are the main delights from the ocean whilst Pastéis de Nata (Custard Tarts) are a ‘must-have’. Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto – Cross the famous metal arched Dom Luis I Bridge over the Douro and meander through the wine stores that house the famous Port wines. ATHENS The Greek capital can sometimes be outshone by its famous islands but Athens has charms of its own. It is also the hub for exploring the rest of Greece. No-one should miss the Acropolis. The splendid ruins that include the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena Nike dominate not only Athens skyline but also its soul. Nearly 3000 years ago the Acropolis became a sacred site and since then it’s been surrounded in myth, legend and tides of wars and invasion. At the base of the Acropolis lies the Plaka, one of the most eyecatching districts of Athens, a labyrinth of tavernas, shops and leafy squares. Buy a custard-filled galaktoboureko pastry and climb Lykavittos Hill (or cheat and take the funicular) for a spectacular view of the city.

The Acropolis and The Parthenon – The massive rocky hill that’s the Acropolis, dominates the cityscape and is visible from all over Athens. On top of it is the Parthenon, one of the most recognisable buildings in the world.

Syntagma Square – Also known as Constitution Square it’s the heart and soul of the city. It’s the perfect place to relax on the benches and do a spot of people watching, enjoy the free WiFi or plan your day’s activities.

Changing of the Guard at The Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier – Every Sunday at 11am, the official changing of the guard is quite possibly the best show in town. The Evzones (guards) go about the change with high kicks and fists to foreheads with such determination. There are changes every hour during the day, and while the soldiers guard they must stand perfectly still until it is time to change.

Join the Locals – The Greeks eat late, sometimes starting as late as 10pm and not winding up until after 1 or 2am. Join them to nibble an array of entrées such as seared calamari, Greek caviar and deep-fried eggplant followed by succulent lamb or fish. Order ouzo in a taverna, dance the night away and maybe throw a few plates! Hadrian’s Arch – Erected in honour of the Roman emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, this arch is located near the Temple of Olympian Zeus, but, as it’s outside the archaeological site, it’s free to view.

Temple of Olympian Zeus – Once the largest temple in Greece, it is also known as the Olympieion. It’s right in the centre of Athens and dedicated to the god Zeus.

Monastiraki Neighbourhood – One of the oldest and busiest areas in Athens, packed with rooftop bars, ancient sights and huge markets. Shop at the flea market, open every day but best on Sundays, and delight your senses at the indoor and outdoor food market Varvakios Agora.

Naxos is the biggest and the most lush island in the Cycladic group. Topkapi Palace – Home of the Ottoman sultans for nearly 400 years, the Treasury in the 3rd courtyard is amazing. Get there when it opens at 9am and go straight to the Harem. Only a certain number of visitors are allowed at one time, so get there first to avoids the queues.

Hagia Sophia – Said to be one of the great buildings of the world, it’s a former Byzantine church, a former Ottoman mosque, and now a museum.

The Blue Mosque – One of the city’s premier sights, the mosque of Sultan Ahmet is called the Blue Mosque because of its light blue interior tiles. You can visit at most times of day and it’s free. Avoid all mosques on Fridays as this is the Muslim holy day and mosques can be closed for lengthy amounts of time for prayers.

Grand Bazaar – Turkey’s largest covered market sells all kinds of things like beautiful Turkish carpets, glazed tiles and pottery, copper and brassware, leather goods, meerschaum pipes and alabaster bookends. Try out your haggling skills.

Hammam – For something a little different why not try a Turkish Bath. You’ll be pulled and pushed, rubbed and scrubbed to within an inch of your life, but you’ll come out feeling wonderful.

Bosphorus Cruise – By far the best way to view the city of Istanbul is by boat on the Bosphorus, the most impressive sights being along the southern shores. You’ll see Topkapi Palace, the Maiden’s Tower, the Selimiye Barracks (where Florence Nightingale worked), Dolmabahçe Palace, Yldz Park – Palace, the village of Ortaköy and the Bosphorus Bridge to name a few.

Please read these booking conditions carefully CONSUMER GUARANTEES ACT The guarantees under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 will apply to services supplied by us except where they are acquired, or held out as being acquired for business purposes. 1. OUR SERVICES AND OBLIGATIONS 1.1 House of Travel Ltd (‘we” or “us” as the case may be) supply services consisting of arranging and co-ordinating travel facilities and services, and making bookings and issuing vouchers to be redeemed by suppliers of travel, entertainment, and accommodation facilities or services (“Suppliers”). House of Travel Ltd is part of the House of Travel group. 1.2 We undertake to perform these services with reasonable care and skill. We will not be liable for any loss or damage which results from the act, default or omission of any person other than ourselves, our employees or agents, or any cause independent of human control. This includes (but is not limited to), loss or damage which arises directly or indirectly from any act of God, weather disruptions, dangers incidental to the sea, fire, breakdown in machinery or equipment, acts of Governments or other authorities de jure or de facto, wars whether declared or not, hostilities, civil disturbances, strikes, riots, deaths, pilferage, epidemics, quarantines or medical or customs regulations. 1.3 We are not able to exercise control over services we do not supply directly, therefore we will not be responsible for any loss or damage arising from: • Any booking made directly with a service Supplier by your travel agent, or • Any services which are not directly provided by us and which are additional to those recorded in clause 1.1 above. 1.4 We will endeavour to provide the most suitable travel arrangements to meet the particular requirements you make known to us. However, travel is an individual experience, and your preferences and opinions may vary from our own. For this reason, we cannot take responsibility for your individual satisfaction. 2. SUPPLY OF TRAVEL, ENTERTAINMENT AND ACCOMMODATION SERVICES AND FACILITIES 2.1 When we make bookings with Suppliers, we are acting as a booking agent for such Supplier. 2.2 All travel, entertainment, and accommodation facilities or services are supplied directly to you by the Suppliers. We have no control over the facilities or services themselves, or the manner in which they are provided by the Suppliers. Therefore you should be aware of the following conditions: • We will not be liable for any loss or damage of any kind which may arise from your use or consumption of, or inability to use or consume those facilities or services. • The provision of those facilities or services is subject to the terms and conditions of your contract with each Supplier. • Where for any reason, a Supplier is unable to provide particular facilities or services, then that Supplier may be entitled, under its contract with you, to substitute those services or facilities with comparable or equivalent facilities or services without incurring any liability to you. You should check your contract with each Supplier. • All facilities or services described by us are subject to availability from the Supplier. • We will not be liable or responsible for any loss or damage relating to your baggage, personal possessions, health or welfare, or delays or travel disruptions unless these arise directly from the service we provide to you. 3. BUSINESS PURPOSES You agree that where our services are acquired for business purposes, or where you hold yourself out as acquiring our services for business purposes, the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 will not apply to any supply of goods or services made under these conditions, and we will not be liable or responsible for any loss or damage of any kind to you, including any consequential loss or damage however it may be caused. 4. INFORMATION IN THIS BROCHURE 4.1 While we attempt to ensure that the contents of this brochure are correct, accurate, and up to date at the time of printing, the contents of this brochure are drawn from information supplied to us by Suppliers. We do not have, and cannot be reasonably expected to have, personal knowledge about all of the facilities or services provided by each Supplier. 4.2 Facilities or services may change after the date of printing. We endeavour to keep travel agents informed of any changes to information in this brochure which are brought to our attention. Prior to completing your booking, you should ask your travel agent whether they are aware of any changes to the published information. You should also make sure that if

your travel agent is advised of changes which occur after booking, your travel agent is able to contact you. 4.3 Maps and Photographs: Maps are shown for general information and may not necessarily reflect actual routings, locations or services provided. Photographs may show places in the geographic area which are not included in your booking. Hotel room photographs may not be the actual room occupied. 4.4 Property Information: Descriptions featured in this brochure are drawn from information provided by our Suppliers. Any facilities or services shown are subject to change at any time. Please advise your travel agent if you have any special requirements. 4.5 Room Bedding: Based on existing bedding in the room. Requests for specific bedding arrangements must be made at the time of booking but can not be guaranteed. For example, twin share may consist of single beds or a shared double bed. 4.6 Rental Cars: We cannot guarantee to provide a particular model or colour within the car category. Availability of car categories is subject to confirmation at the time of booking. We reserve the right to substitute different models. If a vehicle is returned prior to the end of the reserved rental period or if the vehicle is picked up later than the reserved date, NO REFUND will be made for unused rental days

8.3 We strongly recommend that you insure yourself fully against cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances. See Section 10. 9. RESERVATION AMENDMENTS We are happy to incorporate any reasonable amendments you request. An amendment constitutes a change to an existing booking and will attract a $25 fee per amendment prior to final payment and the issuing of the travel documents, and a $50 fee per amendment after travel documents have been issued. These fees are to cover administration and communication costs. You may also be required to pay any Supplier imposed fees. 10. INSURANCE We strongly recommend that you insure yourself fully against cancellation, loss of luggage and personal property, and medical expenses. Your travel agent will be able to provide you with further information. 11. ITEMS NOT COVERED Unless otherwise specified, the cost of airfares, meals, drinks, laundry, insurance, sightseeing, transfers, local taxes, airport departure taxes, Airline imposed insurance levies, passenger service charges and Passport or Visa application fees are not included.

12. VISAS/PASSPORTS

5.1 The prices provided are a guide only based on low season, per adult share twin and are correct at the time of printing. The actual price may differ to that indicated due to currency fluctuations, special events, trade shows or peak periods. Prices for tours are based on per adult per tour for share twin based on low season travel. Prices for cruises are per person for the complete cruise based on the lead-in cabin category on a low season sailing.

For all holidays in this brochure you will require a valid passport. You are responsible for arranging your own passport, visa and health requirements including inoculation. You should check with your travel agent who will be able to provide you with the necessary information.

5.2 We will guarantee the price of the portion of the booking as processed by us, against currency fluctuation for a period of seven (7) days from the time of confirmation of the booking; note: special conditions apply for cruise bookings. It is the responsibility of your travel agent to advise you of the date of confirmation. If your booking remains unpaid after the seven (7) day guarantee period it will be subject to currency fluctuation, up to the time full payment is received by us. 5.3 Events beyond our control, such as changes to the prices of aviation fuel or changes to the cost of services or facilities may result in the prices charged to you being different from those shown in the brochure. You should check all prices with your travel agent before making reservations, and before ticketing. 5.4 Prices may also be liable to variation between the time of booking and the date of departure due to events beyond our control. Due to unforeseen events we reserve the right to vary the price up to the time of your departure. 6. HOUSE OF TRAVEL ACCOMMODATION RATINGS To assist you with the selection of your accommodation, we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. Please note that these gradings are to be used as a guide only and may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. When selecting your accommodation please note that the overall quality of properties in the UK & Europe is generally lower than equivalent priced properties in other countries, particularly in the lower ratings. In general the room sizes are quite small and can vary, even within one property. Please check with your House of Travel consultant to ensure you get the property that best suits your needs. 7. PAYMENT 7.1 A non-refundable deposit will be required by your travel agent and must be paid at the time of booking. This is in addition to any deposits imposed by Suppliers. 7.2 A communication charge may be made for bookings requested less than 72 hours prior to departure. 7.3 Final payment must be made in full before we can release travel documents (including tickets). 8. CANCELLATION 8.1 If you wish to cancel your booking for any reason, you must advise us in writing through your travel agent as soon as possible. 8.2 If you cancel your booking or any part of your booking, we will impose a cancellation fee in respect of each person travelling under that booking. You must also pay all cancellation fees imposed by Suppliers and your travel agent. These cancellation fees are required to offset booking, communication, and administrative charges which have already been incurred by us, Suppliers and your travel agent. Cancellation fees imposed by Suppliers and travel agents are beyond our control and you should check with your travel agent regarding what cancellation fees may be applicable.

13. NON-USE OF SERVICES OR FACILITIES If, of your own choice, you decide not to use part or parts of the arranged services or facilities, you will not be entitled to a refund from us (provided we have carried out our service with reasonable skill and care and to your requirements) and you may not be entitled to a refund from any Supplier. 14. HEALTH OR DISABILITY Some Suppliers may reserve the right to refuse to carry or accommodate people who because of a health condition or disability may require services or facilities to be provided in a special manner. You should check this with your travel agent. 15. SERVICE SATISFACTION During your holiday, if you encounter any situation where the service supplied to you does not meet your satisfaction, please take the matter up with the Supplier immediately. LEGAL CLAIMS Any claims or legal action in connection with the provision of our services to you will be governed by the laws of New Zealand. Any claim or legal action against the Suppliers is likely to be subject to the terms of your contract with them, and may be governed by the laws of other countries.
