General Information House of Travel Accommodation Ratings To assist with the selection of your accommodation we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. These are personal ratings offered by our people from their own experience and should therefore be used as a guide only. These ratings may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. A standard level of accommodation with a limited range of rooms and facilities. Rooms are clean and comfortable with basic furnishings. Moderate accommodation with a reasonable range of rooms and facilities, with rooms furnished to a comfortable standard. Superior standard of accommodation with a wide range of rooms and facilities, and a higher standard of service. First Class accommodation with an excellent range of facilities and services. Considered among the best in the country.
What’s your style? Lodges Staying in a lodge is the most popular form of accommodation while on safari. They vary in standard, but the majority are “all inclusive” which means all your food and safari activities will be included in your nightly rate. Lodges of all standards from budget to luxury are situated in game reserves and national parks in South Africa. Luxury Camps You may be put off by the title, but staying in a luxury camp is a great option while on safari. The tents are huge, they have wooden or concrete floors and all the same facilities you would find in a hotel, and you might get some great extras like an outdoor shower. It is a unique and unforgettable way to stay in Africa. Hotels and Resorts You generally stay in hotels and resorts while you are in cities and towns. When on safari you will most likely stay in a lodge or camp. 1
Welcome to
Southern Africa With some of the most astounding animals on the planet, a timeless feeling and a sense of tribal exotic, Southern Africa offers a spectacular journey of sights, sounds and aromas. Cape Town, in South Africa and with its relaxed atmosphere, is where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for over 17 years. Visit the prison on Robben Island, or enjoy the stunning views across the city atop Table Mountain. Follow the Big Five at famous Kruger National Park, home to some of the highest concentrations of wildlife in the world. Witness the largest single curtain of falling water with astonishing force at Victoria Falls. Botswana, with the Okavango Delta, Moremi Wildlife Reserve and Chobe National Park, this is the optimum wildlife experience. Botswana is a country of discovery, with mokoro trails up secret waterways and tailor-made mobile and lodge safaris – it is unique to anywhere else in Africa. Lying in south western Africa is the rugged, fierce and unforgiving Namibia. With her wide open spaces, a colourful palette of burnt orange sand dunes at Sossusvlei, and lush green vegetation of the Caprivi, you will gaze in wonder at this breath-taking beauty.

Known as the “Rainbow Nation” because of its diverse population (and 11 official languages) South Africa’s colourful name could also refer to the array of spectacular landscapes and wealth of wildlife. South Africa is an artist’s palette – from the blaze of colours among flower-filled meadows, to the lush rainforest greens, the tawny-gold grasslands and the ever-changing hues of ocean blues. The assortment of landscapes provide an extraordinary variety of animal life. There’s the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) but South Africa has enhanced it to the Big Seven by adding sharks (including the great white) and whales. Count penguins, turtles and meerkats to the mix and you’ll have one remarkarble experience. South Africa is all about people too – this Zulu nation welcomes visitors to watch pulsating song and dance, admire their creations of intricate beadwork and other traditional crafts. The Xhosa people also open their land to travellers. Cape Town, with its spectacular Table Mountain, is an iconic destination, as are its nearby wineries. Johannesburg, the City of Gold, is a melting pot of cultures. Throughout the country you will find sites dating back to some of the earliest human habitation on earth, casting reminders of great historic battles including the Boer War. Whether you opt for an ultra-luxury lodge or prefer to rough it, self-drive or take a tour, South Africans everywhere will be happy to see you. If you’re lucky you may get to taste one of their legendary braais – or barbecues. Don’t miss trying their famed traditional borewors sausages! Although South Africa offers an abundance of activities to do year round, the best time to visit would be during winter months. South African’s take breaks over summer and school holidays, and they too like to spend their leisure time in the bush and national parks enjoying the wildlife. This can limit availability in lodges and camps over this timeframe across the nation for locals and visitors alike.
Experience South Africa Our favourite things to see and do THE ELEPHANT SANCTUARY – Spend a day at one of the three Elephant Sanctuaries throughout South Africa. They are a temporary home for young African elephants before they are released back into an environment where they can be more independent. The sanctuary hosts a fully guided educational program with limited guest numbers to ensure personal attention and maximum elephant interaction for each guest. ROBBEN ISLAND – Take a trip out to Robben Island from Cape Town, where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for over 17 years. Once a place of banishment, imprisonment and isolation, today it is a world heritage site and museum - worth a visit! DINING – Cape Town is quickly emerging as a big red flag on the gastronomical world map, supported by its high quality of wine produce from the nearby winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. A visit to some of Cape Town’s most famous eating neighbourhoods such as V&A Waterfront, Long Street and Waterkant will inspire you to reach further into South Africa’s food culture. Try Cape Malay specialties such as bobotie, spoilt-for-choice seafood options, and a spot of fine dining from many world class restaurants. MOHOLOHOLO WILDLIFE SANCTUARY – Visit this fantastic sanctuary inside Kruger National Park which has become a haven for the rehabilitation and care of abandoned, injured and poisoned wildlife. You can visit the sanctuary to see vultures, honey badgers and get to know baby animals, leaving you with an unforgettable experience. ACTION FOR THE ACTIVE-MINDED – Amongst the wildlife, wining & dining, choose an activity that you have never experienced and it will forever put a stamp on your African memory. Avoid the crowds and hike up Table Mountain, then how about abseiling down! The Garden Route is dotted with world class surfing spots, and why not bungy the world’s highest jump, Bloukrans Bridge. Don’t forget the mighty shark cage diving at Gaansbai if you dare! © Wilderness Safaris

Kruger National Park With nearly two million hectares of reserve it’s no wonder Kruger National Park and its surrounding private game reserves can boast not only all of the Big Five but the Little Five (which includes shrews and tortoise). Those lists only scratch the surface however, as Kruger has some of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. Drive to Kruger or fly into any of the four airports throughout the park. Accommodation options are vast – from the simplest of selfcatering bush camps, to lodges with private jacuzzis, luxury “tree houses” or elegant safari tents. Encounter the wildlife through guided day walks, longer treks or on safari drives. With a remarkable sunset comes spectacular skies and the aroma of a bush braai (barbecue); a meal under a starsprinkled African sky is unforgettable.

Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in Southern Africa, with Mozambique to the north and east, South Africa to the south, Botswana to the southwest and Zambia to the northwest and north. The people are friendly, their music and arts are world famous, you just have to see a local festival in full swing to understand that. The national parks are among Africa’s finest, and the bright cities of Harare and Bulawayo boast a variety of attractions. Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls is a haven for outdoor activities including white-water rafting, abseiling, kayaking, micro lighting, parachuting, wildlife viewing, horse riding, cycling and bungee jumping. The Kariba area offers sailing, house-boating and other water activities. Victoria Falls is spectacular to visit throughout the year with the best time from February to May, after the rainy season. This is when you will see the greatest flow of water, although it may be a little difficult to photograph the falls up close without getting yourself and your camera wet! However, due to higher water levels, other thrilling water based activities are at their prime to experience while in the region. Hwange National Park is helping Zimbabwe re-emerge as a popular country to visit, enabling you to view mass herds of elephant and giving inspiration to learn more about this exceptional mammal. Home to one of the world’s last great sanctuaries, the Hwange area is one of the largest unfenced wilderness areas where large uninterrupted animal herds can move as far as the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Zimbabwe is building up a great reputation again for being a unique and safe tourist destination. With Victoria Falls as a great starting point, you won’t be disappointed about what is on offer.
Experience Zimbabwe Our favourite things to see and do VICTORIA FALLS – The sight of the Victoria Falls from Zimbabwe is hard to beat. You stand directly across from the falls to witness masses of water tumbling over the edge with astonishing force. When the water levels are high, be prepared to get saturated from the spray! An umbrella is a good idea. Walk along the opposing footpath yourself, or take a guided tour. If you’re feeling adventurous, make the most of the great activities which operate from the Zimbabwe side including white-water rafting and bungee jumping, or if you’re daring enough, take a microlight flight over the top of the falls, a fantastic way to see this natural wonder from a different perspective. HWANGE NATIONAL PARK – Hwange became a national park in 1929. By the 1970s Hwange National Park had one of the most dense wildlife concentrations in Africa. Although Hwange is Zimbabwe’s most accessible and wildlife-packed park, it is not overcrowded with people, and most vehicles stick to short loop drives within 10km of Main Camp. The best time to visit is the dry season (September-October) when all types of animals congregate around the waterholes making for an incredible sight to enjoy from your vehicle. LAKE KARIBA – Lake Kariba is Zimbabwe’s undiscovered riviera. It offers spectacular views, stunning sunsets, great fishing and boating activities. It has lovely temperatures and summers are fairly hot, but in the winter months days are warm and nights are balmy. Lake Kariba is Africa’s largest man-made dam. There are many safari lodges dotted around the shores. MANA POOLS NATIONAL PARK – Mana Pools National REPUBLIC OF CONGO Park lies at the heart of the Zambezi Valley. A quick and easy flight from either Victoria Falls or Livingstone, this remote park is known for its spectacular floodplains, riverine woodland and views of the Rift Valley escarpment. As this area holds water all year round, the wildlife viewing is excellent.

For wildlife fans, the excellent national parks are teeming with birds and animals, and boast some of the finest safari camps and lodges in the whole of Southern Africa, which is a bit of a hidden gem here. This means there can be less congestion in the parks and it is often easier to find space available at lodges during high season.
Walking safaris are on the incline, and Zambia is one of the best places to do so. A world of difference sits between a safari experience by vehicle, and safari by foot. Share the wildlife paths and waterholes of the animals, feel the rough terrain, get closer to the smells and sounds of the ground. All your senses come alive as you meander the bush. Walking safaris are the perfect way to work off all those luscious meals that are provided daily back at camp!
Experience Zambia Our favourite things to see and do LIVINGSTONE – Named after the famous Victorian missionary explorer, Dr David Livingstone, this little town has become popular due to the close proximity to Victoria Falls. There is a good selection of hotels lining the Zambezi River. From Livingstone there are a wide range of adventure activities and local tours on offer, let’s not forget the opportunity to swim at the edge of the Falls in the Devils Pool! This is a great place to stopover before heading onto Botswana or exploring Zambia further. VICTORIA FALLS – The Zambian side of Victoria Falls is sometimes forgotten, but it provides an entirely different experience to the Zimbabwean side. Walk down a steep track to the base of the falls or cross a footbridge through swirling clouds of spray for a close-up at Knife Edge point. During the dry season, the Zambian side can have little or no water flow over the edge, but creates a unique view of the canyon below. We recommend booking a day tour to the Zimbabwe side of the falls so you can experience both sides. SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK – South Luangwa National Park is regarded as one of the finest wildlife sanctuaries in Africa with a wide variety of wildlife including elephant, hippo, buffalo, black rhino, zebra, leopard and lion. Vegetation ranges from dense woodland to open grassy plains, and oxbow lagoons act as natural waterholes. The park is closed during the rainy season of December to April. LUSAKA – Lusaka is situated in Southern Zambia and is one of the fastest-growing cities in central Africa. It is a sprawling, unplanned metropolis with many multi-storey buildings, high-walled suburbs and busy shanty towns. The city is surprisingly rich in galleries featuring local artists. The Zintu Community Museum exhibits traditional arts and crafts. A major attraction in the capital is the bustling open-air Kamwala Market.

Botswana is an African success story. A long-neglected British protectorate, Botswana achieved its independence in 1966 and immediately thereafter discovered three of the world’s richest diamond mines. Botswana borders South Africa to the south and east, Zimbabwe to the northeast and Namibia to the north. Outside the major towns of Kasane, Maun and Gaborone where the majority of the population is concentrated, Botswana is largely a roadless wilderness of savannahs, deserts, wetlands and salt pans. To ensure the country’s natural assets are preserved, Botswana’s government has embraced a policy of promoting mostly high-cost, low-impact tourism, which shows when travelling there. Needless to say, with the unforgettable experience and quality you do receive, it far outweighs the dollar value spent. There is something to be said when all returned travellers from Botswana rave about the warmth of the local people. Being one of the most sparsely populated nations in the world, their bubbly personalities and heart-melting culture sure make up for it. Always smiling and always singing, a Botswana state of mind is a great moment to experience. Botswana’s wonderful national parks and reserves are home to an amazing variety of wildlife, including elephant, cheetah, hunting dog, leopard, hyena, giraffe, hippo and zebra. The variety of areas in Botswana can create a very diverse safari experience all within the same country, from desert to delta. Botswana is definitely unique from anywhere else in Africa.
Experience Botswana Our favourite things to see and do OKAVANGO DELTA – The Okavango Delta consists of 15,000sq km of lagoons, channels and islands in northwestern Botswana. It’s the largest inland delta in the world and is teeming with wildlife. Most obvious are elephant, zebra, buffalo, wildebeest, giraffe, hippo and kudu. In the centre of the delta, the Moremi wildlife reserve is specifically for wildlife preservation. A great way to see the delta is by mokoro (dugout canoe), which are generally poled through the waterways by guides. A good time to travel is from July to September, when water levels are high and the weather is dry. Nevertheless, the delta impresses travellers year round and with its continual cycle of climate and habitat variation, it is always a good time to visit the Delta. CHOBE NATIONAL PARK – Chobe National Park covers 11,000sq km. Kasane, in the north, is the park’s gateway. Kasane is a good place to base yourself for quick visits to the park, it’s also where you’ll arrive when flying to Chobe. The most popular activity is a cruise or drive along the riverfront, where you have a good chance of spotting elephants (with herds of up to 500), hippo, lion, giraffe, warthog, hyena, crocodile, zebra and any number of bird species. The cruises are a great way to view the wildlife drinking at the shore’s edge, and getting up close to the yawning hippos floating by. MAKGADIKGADI & NXAI PANS – Established at the same time, these two areas east of Maun effectively operate as one national park. The southern area, Makgadikgadi Game Reserve, REPUBLIC OFis CONGO a 4,000sq km tract of pans, grasslands and beautiful savannah. Wildlife is plentiful, though not as dense as at Chobe. There are antelope, lion, hyena, cheetah, and hippo, as well as a stunning array of birds, but no elephant or buffalo. The northern part of the park, Nxai Pan, takes in another 4,000 sq km. The southern part is a complex of mini salt pans. This is one of the few areas in Botswana that’s more interesting during the rainy season – when huge herds hit Nxai’s grassy pans, the numbers can be staggering.

space. With its unspoiled landscapes and a large variety of game, Namibia draws a gradually increasing number of visitors from around the world. Once at the stage where you’ve seen the Big Five, experienced the classic African safari and are ready to see a completely different Africa, Namibia should be at the top of your list. Wedged between the Kalahari and the chilly south Atlantic, Namibia has some of Africa’s most diverse natural habitats, from desert to rugged mountains, thorny bush savannah to woodland, and a limitless area of fascinating sand dunes. Namibia offers a contrasting experience to any other country in Africa. About 15% of the country has been set aside as national parks. In these areas, rare and endangered species of animals, birds and plant life are preserved and protected. Most of the African game species are well represented in Namibia, with the largest concentration in Etosha National Park – a mainly dry and barren park where you can often find a large variety of wildlife gathering around waterholes. Namibia will show you the desert-dwelling elephant, like no other in the world. Born and adjusted to the arid desert climate, one could pass the desert elephant as their own sub species. Their lives are a continual search for food and water. When in the desolates of the Namib Desert, this makes for a tough battle. Namibia is a country that can be visited at any time. But for optimal game viewing in the Etosha pans, the dry winter months are best. Autumn and spring is when the stunning orange-red sand dunes contrast against blue skies, making Sossusvlei a dream destination for photographers.
Experience Namibia Our favourite things to see and do WINDHOEK – Namibia’s capital has a small population of 160,000 people. The city centre is characterised by a mix of German colonial structures and modern buildings. Dominating the skyline is Christuskirche, the neo-gothic and Art Nouveau-designed German Lutheran church. Other striking buildings include the parliament building, the whitewashed Alte feste and the Cape Dutch-style railway station. For a panoramic view of the city, take the hour-long Hofmeyer walk through the nearby bushland of the Klein Windhoek Valley. Windhoek is where the majority of tours and travel arrangements start and finish, and its the central point for major attractions which are dotted around Namibia. SOSSUSVLEI – Located in the central Namib Desert and enduring barren conditions, Sossusvlei is famous for its stunning red and orange sand dunes, and is said to have the highest sand dune in the world. The changing colours of the dunes at dawn and dusk offer a spectacular sight, and also a great challenge to climb to the top. Sossusvlei is sought after by many photographers, and those who are keen to walk to the top of dune 45, standing over 170m tall and composed of five million year old sand. ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK – Etosha National Park consists of salt pan, woodland and savannah habitats. The Etosha Pan is an immense, flat, saline desert that only occasionally holds water. Between May and September is the best chance of seeing animals such as elephants, giraffes, lions, zebras and a few cheetahs and leopards. SKELETON COAST – The Skeleton Coast stretches approximately 500km, but the name is often used for the entire desert coastline. The park takes in nearly two million hectares of sand dunes and gravel plains. The attraction of this remote area lies in the colour, changing moods and untouched profile of its landscape. Its aura of mystery is largely due to the dense coastal fog caused by the cold current from the Arctic, and the ghostly remains of shipwrecks that are scattered along the coast.

Welcome to
East Africa Neighbours Kenya and Tanzania are quintessential Africa – these are the lands of the wandering Masai warriors and Swahili tribesman, where wildebeest and zebra migrate across the endless Savannah plains, and kilometres of Indian Ocean coastline, all unchanged for hundreds of years. Kenya is famed for the astonishing density of its wildlife, including the Big Five of elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino. All can be found in the Masai Mara making this national park irresistible. Not to forget Samburu National Park in the north, and Amboseli National Park in the south, where on a clear day you can see Mt Kilimanjaro. With around a quarter of the country in reserves, Tanzania is also a haven for animals of all kinds. One of the most spectacular wildlife locations is the Ngorongoro Crater. Among the dozens of species living here are the endangered black rhino, and flocks of flamingo. Then for those with a bit of extra time or ready for a real sense of adventure, take a flight to the regions of Uganda and Rwanda, where you can trek deep into the forest in search of the mighty gorillas. One of the most amazing experiences is to be up close and personal with these incredible giants.

Straddling the equator on the east coast of Africa is Kenya, one of the most scenically diverse and striking countries on the continent, home to the nomadic Masai and Samburu tribal people. Kenya has two major cities, the high-altitude, colonial-built capital of Nairobi, and the ancient Swahili trading port of Mombasa. But what really draws the tourists is the great outdoors. Kenya is the heart of safari country and a visit to its spectacular parks and reserves is a memorable experience, especially during the period of the Great Wildebeest Migration. Between July and October, the Great Wildebeest Migration is an enthralling event for travellers from all over the world. Nowhere on earth will you find a movement of animals as abundant as this. The migration has to cross the Mara River at some point, which is crowded with hungry crocodiles. Timing is everything in order to view this spectacle! The Kenyan scenery is fabulous – from the indigo sea and white sand beaches of Malindi to the grey-green rolling bushveld of Tsavo and Amboseli. The rippling golden grasslands of the Masai Mara contrast with the great Rift Valley and the desolate volcanic wastelands around northern Lake Turkana. For the more energetic, Kenya has some excellent mountains to climb, Mt Kenya being one of the most challenging, and rewarding. A trip to Kenya is only complete when a day in the life of a roving independent Masai is understood. Worlds apart from today’s western influences, the traditions and rituals of a Masai maintain an integral part of everyday life. Their practises entice visitors to ponder how simple life could potentially be. Living alongside wildlife in harmony is also an important part of Masai beliefs, so this exceptional co-existence is another reason Kenya is a unique place to discover.
Experience Kenya Our favourite things to see and do DAVID SHELDRICK WILDLIFE TRUST – Visiting this orphanage is a great day out, and a lot can be learnt from those who have dedicated their lives to nurture and revive the African wildlife in any way possible. With an ongoing threat of elephant and rhino poaching in Africa, the inspiration to help this Trust reach their goal is becoming more important. Anyone in the world can now foster an elephant at the Trust for a small annual cost, helping to rehabilitate these precious creatures back into their natural habitat. Doors are open for only one hour a day, so be sure to book before you arrive. MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE – The Masai Mara National Reserve is the most popular game park in Kenya. This 320 sq km reserve is teeming with wildlife and covers a vast chunk of the Serengeti. Lions are found in large prides everywhere, and it is not unusual to see them hunting. A reserve rather than a national park (the Masai people are allowed to hunt animals here), the reserve includes a Masai village that is open for tourists to experience an insight to Masai life. During July and August, millions of wildebeest and antelopes move en masse from the Serengeti in search of lush grass. They head south again around October. AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK – At 392 sq km, Amboseli is full of elephants in huge herds. One of the highlights is seeing them cross the grassy plains with Tanzania’s Mt Kilimanjaro sitting proudly in the background. You can see a large variety of wildlife here. Most visitors approach Amboseli through Namanga, the main border post between Kenya and Tanzania. KENYAN BEACHES – Kenyan beaches make an excellent ending to any Kenya safari. Pick a beach anywhere between Mombasa to Lamu and you can expect brilliant blue seas lapping against fine white sands. The coast is lined with coral reefs, making for excellent diving and watersports. Pemba Island is a hotspot for big game fishing, be prepared to reel in a Marlin!

Serengeti Wildebeest Migration commencement, Serengeti
Think vast Savannah Plains, age old Acacia trees, masses of game roaming the migration route and lone Masai Warriors keeping watch of their herds - That is Tanzania. One of the most beautiful countries in Africa to visit and providing home to more than 100 different ethnic groups, Tanzania also offers 6,000 square miles of savannah teeming with wildebeest, gazelles, zebras and their elusive predators. Their annual search for new pasture and waters, the Great Wildebeest Migration, is the largest remaining unaltered animal migration in the world. More remote than it’s neighbour Kenya with less tourist accommodation beds through the main game reserves, your opportunity to get off the beaten track and immerse yourself in daily safari searches are endless. Every day adds a new layer of education to your African journey. Game viewing in Tanzania is excellent, with the country’s many parks such as the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Park and Mt Kilimanjaro National Park all combined to sustain one of the largest animal populations in the world. If you are an avid adventurer, then climbing Mount Kilimanjaro will be on your bucket list, proudly standing as African’s highest mountain. With several different routes to reach the summit, this hike is not for the faint hearted. Mt Kilimanjaro will not only challenge you physically, but also mentally. Often snow capped at certain times of the year, views from the top are unparalleled. Zanzibar is an idyllic place to spend a few days relaxing and rejuvenating after your safari or bucket list climb. With a fascinating history and rich culture of Arab trading days, Zanzibar has some of the most stunning turquoise waters and pristine beaches along the African coast.
Experience Tanzania Our favourite things to see and do SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK – Serengeti National Park, which sprawls across 14,763 sq km, is Tanzania’s most famous game park. Here you can get a glimpse of what much of East Africa must have looked like in the days before the ‘Great White Hunters’ arrived. On the seemingly endless Serengeti Plains there are literally millions of scrambling hoofed animals. They’re constantly on the move in search of grassland and are preyed upon by a mob of predators. NGORONGORO CRATER – The views from the rim of Ngorongoro Crater are spectacular, but you need to descend to its 20km wide floor to see the stunning wildlife, including lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, reedbuck, as well as thousands of flamingo wading in the shallows of Lake Magadi. Local Masai tribes also have grazing rights here. The Ngorongoro Crater rim has a great climate during late October to mid December when the short rains occur. MT KILIMANJARO NATIONAL PARK – Mt Kilimanjaro is one of Africa’s most magnificent sights, and at 5,895m, it is the highest peak on the African continent. The mountain rises through lush rainforests, alpine meadows and finally across a barren lunar landscape to the snow-capped twin summits. The rainforest is also home to plenty of wildlife. If you plan to climb to the summit, then it is recommended that you take an organised trek along one of the many trail options. ZANZIBAR – Zanzibar, the spice island, entices the traveller with its exotic Stone Town, beautiful beaches and pristine coral reefs. The whitewashed coral-rag houses, quaint shops, bazaars, mosques, courtyards and squares of Stone Town are the legacy of the Persian traders from the 12th and 15th century. This is a great side trip after your safari to wind down and relax.

Uganda has had a rather turbulent past, but has now become a more peaceful country. It is home to many different ethnic groups, yet none of these form the majority of Uganda’s population. Around 40 languages are currently used, English being the official language. Kibale Forest is where chimpanzees have made their home, and where you can hear their evocative pant-hoot call any time of the day. Head to Ngamba Island (45 minutes boat from Entebbe), where most of the chimps who were confiscated by poachers, now live free and happy. Neighbouring Uganda is Rwanda, small in size but a population density among the highest in Africa. Appropriately dubbed “The Land of a Thousand Hills” Rwanda is predominantly grassy highlands and hills, with altitudes varying from a low of 1207m, to Mt. Karisimbi, the highest of a range of extinct volcanoes in the northwest reaching 4507m. Lake Kivu forms part of the border with the Congo and is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in Africa. Due to the high climate, rainy season is aplenty between March to May, bringing to life the tropical rainforest of the highlands. The dry season is one of length between June to September and makes for more comfortable trekking in search for the legendary mountain gorilla. Uganda and Rwanda’s star attraction is of course the endangered mountain gorilla, the biggest of living primates. Trek through this breath-taking part of the world to discover a gorilla’s home. Staring into the pensive brown eyes of these gentle giants who share 95% of their genes with humans, is as humbling as it is thrilling. Knowing there are fewer than 700 alive today, the time to visit the land of gorillas is now!
