General Information House of Travel Accommodation Ratings To assist with the selection of your Samoa accommodation we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. These are personal ratings offered by our people from their own experience and should therefore be used as a guide only. These ratings may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. Basic accommodation often with shared facilities and based more around an authentic local experience. Properties in this category, including Samoan beach fales have a limited range of facilities and services. Standard rooms, clean and comfortable usually with basic furnishings and private ensuites. Typically most properties would include a restaurant and bar but have a limited range of other guest facilities and services. Moderate accommodation with a reasonable range of room facilities and good level of comfort usually with a wide range of recreational and leisure activities available for guest enjoyment. Superior accommodation offering exceptional level of comfort in rooms with quality furnishings and fixtures. There tends to be greater attention to personalised service and strong focus on quality food and beverages. First class accommodation. These resorts have a reputation built on quality and exclusivity and offer the very best services with detailed focus on high customer satisfaction and are usually located in prime locations. A half star is noted when the level of service and facilities falls between two grades. Grading accommodation can be quite subjective and generally speaking the standard and services will be in line with the price paid. Please check with your House of Travel specialist to ensure you get the accommodation that best fits your needs. Throughout the brochure the symbols

Welcome to

Samoa

© Samoa Tourism

Small wonder that famous Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson chose to spend the last few years of his life in Samoa: with its lush rainforest blanketing volcanic peaks, its sparkling white beaches, stunning waterfalls and warm, welcoming locals, this destination truly is a visitor’s Treasure Island. Actually, to be strictly accurate, Samoa is not one but 10 islands, two large ones and eight islets, each offering amazingly distinct environments for visitors to explore. This Pacific paradise has avoided the negative impacts of rampant tourism that have tarnished some destinations. Samoa remains unspoilt and there are endless kilometres of deserted beaches, enough to ensure you can find your own private tropical heaven. And just as the countryside and beaches have remained largely untouched by time, the same is true of the Samoan way of life. The country boasts a Pacific culture stretching back 3000 years and it’s based around a traditional life centred on the family and respect for elders. Communities are headed by chiefs, known as matai, and Samoans are predominantly Christians – there are more churches here than in the whole of Rome. Tradition also extends to the accommodation on offer in Samoa. No visit here is complete without spending at least one night in an open-sided, thatched beachfront fale, lulled to sleep by waves lapping the shore and fanned by soft tropical breezes. We spent time finding a great selection to offer you: they’re cheap, they’re gorgeous and for anyone with a sense of adventure, they’re a must. If you’re splashing out, there are, of course, deluxe resorts available where you can unwind in luxury. Or if you prefer, there’s a complete range of accommodation in between. Whatever type of lodging, and however you decide to spend your time in these islands, it’s possible that you’ll leave them with more than just a tan and happy memories. The relaxed, traditional way of life here may change your personal priorities forever. Samoa… serene, spectacular and superspecial.

Upolu Upolu is Samoa’s second largest island and home to its colourful capital, Apia. This city oozes a colonial charm reminiscent of the writings of Somerset Maugham. Take a stroll through the city’s bustling Maketi Fou market. Enjoy a refreshing drink of coconut milk, or stock up on tropical fruit. If you’re looking for handicrafts to take home, head for the flea market. Upolu has scores of dazzling white beaches, making it easy to find your own secluded cove. But also take time to venture inland to enjoy the verdant rainforest that echoes to the sound of tropical birds and is threaded by rivers and spectacular cascading waterfalls. To make the most of the magnificent natural attractions Upolu has to offer, hire a car – it’s a fun and easy way to get around the island.

Mulifanua 10 Wharf

8

PALOLO DEEP MARINE RESERVE – An excellent snorkelling, diving and swimming spot just a fi ve minute stroll from downtown Apia. There’s a stretch of shallow reef full of coloured coral and many species of tropical fi sh. Best visited at high tide, there are changing rooms here and snorkel and mask hire available.

3

13 5

11

APIA MARKETS – No shopping experience in Samoa is complete without visiting the Flea market on Apia’s waterfront. There are heaps of small stalls selling fresh produce and island crafts. Nearby is the fi sh market, where a scramble takes place every Sunday to snag the freshest catches. Both markets are great places to mix and mingle with the locals.

9

12

7

PAPASE'EA SLIDING ROCKS – Here you’ll enjoy skimming down the waterfall into a refreshing rock pool. Competition for a seat at the top of the main fi ve metre slide can be fi erce, but there are three smaller slides to enjoy. If you’re visiting during the dry season, check the water level for safety fi rst! ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON MUSEUM – Set in the Scottish author’s beautifully restored former residence, Villa Vailima which features many of his belongings, musical instruments and family photos, this is a must for any visitor to Samoa. If you’ve got the energy, take the 30-45 minute walk to his tomb at the top of Mount Vaea. EAST COAST – For an amazing stretch of white sand beach you’ll be hard pushed to see any better beach than Lalomanu. It’s a perfect place to swim and relax. Then, when you’ve worked up an appetite, head to Taufua Beach Fales, literally on the beach, for a hearty lunch and to get to know the locals. MT VAEA – The ideal follow-up to your Robert Louis Stevenson Museum visit, but, as mentioned above, you do need energy for the 30-45 minute climb to the summit and the great writer’s tomb. On your way, remember that the path you are treading was cut by Samoan mourners as they carried Stevenson’s body to its grave. A very poignant, beautiful and special place.

TO SUA OCEAN TRENCH – At Lotofaga on the south coast of Upolu. ‘To Sua’ means big hole, and that’s exactly what this famous beauty-spot is: a spectacular blue ring of crystal clear seawater, fringed by emerald green ferns. Climb down the ladder and swim.

Manono Island Full Day Tour

This half day tour is ideal for a ‘short and sweet’ intro to Upolu and will give you the chance to learn a few points of interest about Samoa. You’ll drive past places of historic and scenic interest including Mulinu’u, the sacred burial grounds of the chiefly families of Samoa, Parliament House, the Moamoa Theological College with its exquisite stained windows and the former home of Robert Louis Stevenson, the famous author and adventurer to name a few.

Better taken in the afternoon, this tour gives you the chance to meet the locals at the colourful food and handicraft market which is open daily. Be sure to stock up on fresh fruit like pawpaws or a bunch of sweet ladyfinger bananas to snack on during your day. Upon leaving the markets the tour takes the scenic route to Vaimoso-uta and passes by cocoa and banana plantations before delivering you to Papasee’a for a swim and slide into the mountain spring pool. A most refreshing way to end your day.

Tafatafa Beach & South East Upolu

This scenic tour along the north east coast of Upolu provides a panorama of views including the impressive Falefa Falls. Along the way you will pass through lush green forests, waterfalls, plantations and traditional Samoan villages. Enroute, stop for a refreshing swim at the natural deep swimming hole To Sua Trench then enjoy some lunch, swimming and snorkelling at the beautiful Faofao beach. Your last stop before returning to your hotel is Papapapaiatai Falls which drops into an old volcanic crater. Photo opportunities abound so don’t forget your camera!

Two very different destinations, but both featuring water: Falefa Falls with its 10m drop into the ocean, and tranquil Piula Cave Pool which runs beneath the oldest Methodist church in Samoa. Your route takes you along Upolu’s scenic northeast coast to the falls, with photo stops at villages. Continue to Piula, where you’ll have the chance to swim. The freshwater pool is formed by a spring flowing through lava – and if you fancy a saltwater dip too, the sea is right next door. Head out of Apia on the Cross Island Road, stopping at the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum: a must for every visitor. Then into the mountains and rainforest of the interior, with a stop at magnificent Papapapaitai Falls (weather permitting). Lunch is a delicious beach barbecue at Tafatafa with ample time for a swim. Savai’i For a taste of the true Samoa you must visit Savai’i, Samoa’s largest island. Savai’i is the cultural experience you have yearned for. Here you can live like a local while at the same time savouring the island’s stunning natural attractions. Get high on a rainforest canopy boardwalk or swim with green turtles. And, if you’re a keen diver, take the opportunity to go scuba diving. Samoa boasts more than 200 types of coral so what better way to spend your time than swimming lazily through the delightfully turquoise waters. Savai’i is an island of incredible contrasts – follow the lava tube trail, or blow away the cobwebs by taking an invigorating hike around the easily accessible volcanic crater on the Tafua Peninsula. Cool off afterwards by relaxing in the shade of a palm tree on a nearby white sand beach.

Our favourite things to see and do CANOPY WALKWAY – This is part of the Falealupo Rainforest Preserve and is a must do activity for those lucky enough to visit Savai’i. You’ll climb a hanging bridge crossing a 30 metre gap between two big tropical trees – a real challenge if you have a fear of heights. ALOFAAGA BLOWHOLES – The entrance to the blowholes is at the village of Taga on south-west Savai’i. This is wave power at its mighty best and is particularly worth watching when locals throw coconuts into the holes and have them propelled high into the air – fun! TIA SEU ANCIENT MOUND – This imposing 12 metre tall man made ancient mound is the largest of its kind in Polynesia. The mystery remains as to who built it and why – nevertheless it’s here on Letolo Plantation for you to see!

SALEAULA LAVA FIELDS – The main North Coast Road between Samalae’ulu and Saleaula crosses the dark fractured lava fields and provides access to several fascinating sites. It’s worth lingering here and letting your imagination try to recreate the fiery events of the Mt Matavanu eruptions between 1905–1911. Buried villages and churches can still be found as you walk over this geological expanse. HIRE A CAR – This is a great way to explore the natural attractions at your own pace and the sealed Main Coast Road that winds around the island makes it even more pleasurable. Keep an eye out for stray children, pigs, dogs and chickens and seek local knowledge of where petrol stations are - after all it would be a tad embarrassing running out! CAPE MULINU’U – Until the International Date Line moved, this was the last place in the world to see the old day end! On the far western tip of Savai’i, it’s a place of great spiritual significance, where the souls of Samoa’s dead pass into the underworld. There are a number of archaeological sites to explore here too, so do find a local guide to show you around.

You’ll find them in Fagamalo Village on the North Coast of Savai’i, across the road from Le Lagoto. Whether you’re a novice or a ‘seasoned’ diver you’re sure to have a memorable dive experience with Dive Savai’i. They’re the only PADI dive centre on the island, offering dive trips to the best spots in the area, from introductory dives to open water and snorkelling trips for the whole family. A dive spot not to be missed is the wreck Juno, a short boat trip from shore, with many coloured corals and a wide variety of reef fish.

A good way to explore Savai’i is by car. Rental cars are limited on Savai’i so we recommend you hire your car on Upolu and take it across on the ferry to Savai’i. Once on Savai’i there’s so much to see - caves, natural arches, ancient monuments, churches, beautiful waterfalls, lava fields and aweinspiring blowholes. As you drive around watch out for roaming pigs and chickens, not to mention people walking on the roadside. You don’t have to worry about getting lost either, as there’s only one sealed road that runs around the island.

This tour covers the North Coast and begins at the colourful Salelologa Markets before a brief stop at Sapapali’i Village – where the first missionaries arrived in Samoa in the early 1800’s. You’ll then head northwards through delightful coastal villages and stop off at various natural attractions and areas of historical significance – there will be plenty of photo opportunities along the way. The highlights are sure to be the Saleaula lava fields and a stop at Satoalepai where you’ll be able to swim with the turtles.

South Coast Savai’i Tour

Afu Aau Waterfalls

Alofaaga Blowholes

This tour covers the South Coast of Savai’i and is sure to give you a true Savaiian experience. It starts off with a visit to the fresh produce market where you’ll see locally grown produce and handicrafts before heading off through small coastal villages and lush rainforest areas. Stops are made at various natural attractions as well as areas of historical significance. A highlight is sure to be the arrival at the Alofaaga blowholes which are spectacular in sight and force followed by lunch at Aganoa Surf Resort where you can enjoy a relaxing swim.

This spectacular waterfall in South-eastern Savai’i, plunges from the rainforest deep into a fresh-water swimming pool. Access is on a dirt road which is maintained by the local village. The pool is very deep but gets shallow towards the outer rim. The waterfall eventually flows into three other smaller separate falls offering a truly enchanting experience for visitors. Entrance fees are collected at the Samoan fale about 650m from the main road. Park your car here and enjoy the 10 minute walk to the pool and waterfall. There are no lifeguards here, so take extra precaution when swimming.

These impressive blowholes in the village of Taga on the south west coast can provide you with hours of fun! They pump the ocean swell through the side of a cliff, into a cavity and propel a roaring jet of water hundreds of feet into the air - the sheer power is absolutely unbelievable! They are particularly worth watching when the locals throw coconuts into the holes and these are blasted effortlessly into the air. Best viewed in swimwear as you’re guaranteed to get wet and a waterproof camera is a must-bring item for this attraction.

Beach Fales Complete your Samoan holiday experience by staying in one of the many traditional thatched open-sided fales that dot the coastline. These fales are mostly on village land and are usually family operated, ensuring a warm welcome and friendly service. These fales give a whole new meaning to the term beachfront. They are scattered all around the coast of the two main islands, Upolu and Savai’i, consequently they enjoy some of Samoa’s most scenic vistas. What better way to end an enjoyable day’s sightseeing than by letting the gentle lapping of waves lull you to sleep. While beach fales are back-tobasics accommodation, any lack of modern amenities is more than compensated for by the chance to live like a local amid some million-dollar scenery.

A Beach Fale experience is for those of you who are adventurous and who are happy to pack a lavalava and a toothbrush – after all you won’t need much more, because you’ll be exchanging the usual hotel experience for the more modest facilities of a traditional open-sided fale (with pull down blinds for added privacy). Share a bowl of kava with hospitable locals rather than a flash bar with other tourists. If you break into a sweat at the thought of doing without an air-conditioned bathroom, this style of holiday isn’t for you.

Respect your hosts as you are essentially a guest in their home. As you are totally responsible for your belongings, including your passport, you’ll need to take a lockable bag or padlock. Take a torch as there may not be a reading lamp and it will be handy to guide you to the communal bathroom in the darkness of night. Take your own towel for showering and to use at the beach. Bring your shoes into your fale at night so local dogs don’t run off with them! Take a basic supply of bottled water, beer and snacks as your hosts may run out of these. If you have food or medical issues, let your hosts know before you arrive. Pack a toilet roll – after all you don’t want to be caught in the middle of the night! Hand sanitizer is also good to have handy. With any food supplies keep them well sealed away from any unwanted four-legged visitors at night. While it’s great to be lulled to sleep by the gentle lapping of waves, earplugs are a must just in case you’re unlucky with barking dogs, crowing roosters or partying guests. A lavalava (Samoan sarong) is handy to have close by – they not only look good but are cool, handy for lying on the beach and when wrapped, provide instant modesty.

Remember above all, pack your sense of adventure and enjoy legendary Samoan hospitality.
