Welcome to
Singapore, Malaysia & Borneo Unlike many destinations,Asia presents a diversity of experiences for everyone. Be it the crystal clear azure waters of Langkawi where snorkelling is a must, the exhausting yet exhilarating trek up Mount Kinabalu − the highest peak in South East Asia, wandering through the cool tea plantations in the Cameron Highlands,to shopping in the mega malls in the bustling gateway cities such as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Add to the list a magical collection of historic monuments, exotic temples, virgin landscapes, endless stretches of beaches; then there is the food, aromatic and delicious. Rich with culture, today Asia is becoming a ‘must do’ for Kiwis. Once thought of as an adventure destination, it is now seen as more mainstream with its world class resorts, established tourism infrastructure and excellent value for money. It’s where East meets West and ancient and modern cultures merge in a vibrant tropical climate providing the backdrop for a truly memorable holiday. Whether you are looking for a deserted beach with bungalows nestled on the shoreline, resorts with every imaginable facility, gleaming skyscraper hotels in gateway cities, or a longhouse in the jungle − Asia has it all!

Known as the ‘Gateway to Asia’, Singapore is a vibrant tropical destination, world renowned for its shopping, eateries, attractions, style and cleanliness. Whether you head there for two days or ten, you’ll find no trip to the ‘Lion City’ is ever the same. Not many cities in Asia can boast Singapore’s fascinating ethnic mix. Throughout history, migration has left its stamp on the city’s culture. Visit the bright sari and bangle stores in the old shop houses of Little India, and in Chinatown explore the many antique stores or bargain hunt for silk. For the shopaholics, Orchard Road is a must; the variety and quality here will leave you spoilt for choice. Allow plenty of time, as you’ll be lucky to see half of it in one day. With the huge developments recently around the Marina Bay area; the iconic Marina Bay Sands, the Singapore Flyer and Gardens by the Bay, not to mention Resorts World® hosting Universal Studios Singapore®, and S.E.A. AquariumTM, it is no wonder people keep going back to this city time and time again. The river plays host to plenty of fabulous bars and restaurants in the three popular quay areas; Clarke Quay being the most famous, Boat Quay and Robertson Quay. Although Singapore has come a long way over the past 10 years and now showcases itself as a modern international city, you can’t leave without heading to Raffles Hotel for High Tea or a legendary Singapore Sling; an experience that carries with it generations of colonial history and tradition.
Experience Singapore Our favourite things to see and do BUMBOAT RIDE ALONG SINGAPORE RIVER – Make your way to Marina Bay and jump aboard a traditional Singapore ‘Bumboat’ to cruise along the river. Hop off at Boat Quay, where you’ll find many bars and restaurants all housed in historic Peranakan shop-houses. Check out the riverbank deals such as ‘2 for 1’ and ‘happy hour’. VIVOCITY – Located five minutes from the CBD, VivoCity is every shopper’s dream. With a broad selection of stores from fashion to homeware, toys to entertainment, it’s Singapore’s largest shopping mall and is designed to offer the best shopping experience for the entire family. The mall is complete with Singapore’s largest cinema complex, giant food courts and amphitheatre for events. SINGAPORE CHILLY CRAB – For an authentic meal experience that will get your taste buds going, head to Chinatown and try Chilli Crab with tangy gravy and succulent flesh. CLARKE QUAY – On the edge of the river, and buzzing with activity at all hours, you’ll find the most popular restaurants and bars. Soak up the atmosphere as you stroll through the retail shops and open-air bazaars. SINGAPORE SLING – Step into nostalgia at the Long Bar in Raffles Hotel for Singapore’s signature drink. Colonial architecture, straw fans gently swaying and peanut shells on the ground combine to make this an iconic experience. DEMPSEY HILL – Once the site of military army barracks, just a short distance from Orchard Road and set in green surrounds, is a hip cluster of wining and dining establishments, art galleries, antique furniture stores and weekend farmers markets. TANJONG BEACH CLUB – If you’re staying on Sentosa, enjoy a little lazy luxury at the Tanjong Beach Club which offers a great mix of ex-pat and local culture. The restaurant serves up hearty Western food or you can indulge in creative cocktails at the open breezy bar. © Singapore Tourism Board

From stunning beaches and islands with world class snorkelling and diving, to the vast rainforest and national parks abundant with wildlife, mixed with the amazing cuisine, great shopping and friendly people, Malaysia makes for a great holiday destination no matter what your tastes are. Comprising of three distinct parts, Peninsula Malaysia and the two island states of Sabah and Sarawak in East Malaysia on the island of Borneo, are areas all well developed, yet rich and varied in cultural tradition. Kuala Lumpur is the focal point of Malaysia and the nation’s capital. The action here lies in the city centre dubbed the ‘Golden Triangle’ – a madcap mix of modern hotels and large shopping complexes complemented by traces of its British colonial past and cultural beliefs. The islands of Penang and Langkawi on the west coast of the peninsula are renowned for their relaxed atmosphere and beautiful beaches. Penang, the food capital of Malaysia, offers Batu Ferringhi Beach and the night bazaar in the evening along with Georgetown, unmistakably Chinese with a colonial architectural influence. Langkawi, an archipelago of islands, is blessed with many natural features, stunning waterfalls, tropical jungles and pristine sandy beaches, not to mention its duty free status. On the east coast of the peninsula, slightly less known islands of Tioman, Redang and the Perhentian Islands also offer some fantastic island escapes. Renowned for their white sandy beaches, crystal blue waters and abundant marine life, they are fast becoming ‘must dos’ for underwater enthusiasts or those that just want to laze around on an exotic tropical island. If you’re looking for a holiday with a difference, be sure to add Malaysia to your list!

Experience Malaysia Our favourite things to see and do PETRONAS TWIN TOWERS – Observe KL from the world’s tallest twin towers; it takes all of 41 seconds to shoot up to the midpoint of Petronas Twin Towers. Tickets to the skybridge sell out fast, but how often do you get to feel on top of the world? CAMERON HIGHLANDS – Malaysia’s largest hill resort in the country, this highland paradise still retains much of the charm of an English Village. Primarily an agricultural domain, you will find an abundance of vegetable and fruit farms here. Cameron Highlands is the leading producer of flowers and tea in Malaysia. Explore the tea plantations, strawberry farms or butterfly centres. PENANG HAWKER FOOD – If Penang is the food capital of Malaysia, Gurney Drive is the best of Penang on a plate! Hawkers fire up their woks and dish out street food fit for a king. The popular seafront promenade exemplifies the colours and atmosphere of Penang – fun, lively and vibrant. LANGKAWI CABLE CAR AND SKY BRIDGE – A 15 minute journey by cable car will see you to the top of Mt. Mat Cincang. Admire the lush rainforests and the miniscule islands from the 708 metre peak. Head to the observatory deck or make your way to the 125 metre long curved skybridge. This bridge suspends by cable, so it’s not for the faint-hearted. HOMESTAY WITH THE LOCALS – Experiencing a homestay in a traditional village or ‘kampung’ is one of the fastest and easiest ways to get to know the real Malaysia. You will discover local life moves at a slower pace than in the city, and for those who relish the quiet calm of the rustic life, this is possibly as good as it gets. Homestay guests will not just be immersed in the lifestyle of the locals, they will also quickly establish a bond with their warm and welcoming families who will treat them like their own.

A perfect destination for those looking for an adventure, Borneo is home to some of the world’s oldest rainforests and spectacular diving sites. Favourite pastimes here include trekking through the jungle, bird watching and looking out for exotic wildlife. Malaysian Borneo makes up the northern half of the island of Borneo, with the southern region being part of Indonesia. Split into two Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, both offer unique experiences. Sabah is the perfect place to start in this land of eco treasures. Untouched and unspoilt, Sabah’s heart is Mt.Kinabalu, an impressive granite peak stretching 4,100 metres. Any trip to Sabah is not complete with at least a walk round the base of this famous mountain. Witness the ‘wild man of Borneo’ – the orang utan, at Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre, the largest sanctuary in the world or offshore head out to the Turtle Islands where environmental projects are underway to help the ancient sea turtles. The heart of Sarawak is its rainforests and the large rivers that feed in and out of it. With a vast network of national parks, it is a great place to explore the jungle, cave systems, wildlife and amazing flora and fauna found in these parts. It is also home to many unique and fascinating tribal cultures, including the infamous headhunters. There are numerous ethnic groups found throughout both states, the people are warm and friendly and enjoy many colourful festivals and traditions that will take you back centuries. If different culture fascinates you, engage in some customs with a stay in a longhouse. Sip on ‘lihiing’, their potent rice wine, no doubt leaving you with lasting memories or not! For those that prefer to laze the day away, there are many stunning beach resorts that dot the coastline. No matter what your reason is for travelling, you will not be disappointed with what this emerging destination can offer.

Experience Borneo Our favourite things to see and do THE SEPILOK ORANG UTAN REHABILITATION CENTRE – Located in Sandakan, this rehabilitation centre was set up in 1964 to rehabilitate ophaned orang utan. Watch the orang utan up close in their natural habitat. A boardwalk leads to a viewing gallery and feeding platform where the orang utan are fed milk and bananas twice a day. While rehabilitation is the main goal here, the creation of the reserve also minimises the impact of deforestation. SIPADAN – If you are a keen diver, this is the place to go. Formed by living corals growing on top of an extinct volcano, this area is now rated by many dive journalists as one of the top diving destinations in the world. It is located in the Celebes Sea off the east coast of Sabah. GAYA STREET FAIR – Every Sunday in Kota Kinabalu, Gaya Street is closed off to traffic so traders can set up their stalls. Shop for anything, from batik sarongs, fruits and flowers, arts and crafts, to footwear, antiques and souvenirs. If you like coffee, pick up some local Tenom coffee. MULU CAVES – This spectacular cave system, deep in Sarawak’s Gunung Mulu National Park near Miri, has over 200 kilometres of cave passages. Over millennia the flow of water has cut deep gorges through the Park’s limestone mountains and within the rock itself, creating a network of vast caves. The main underground attractions of the Mulu Caves include Clearwater Cave, the longest cave in South East Asia, and Deer Cave. SELINGAN ISLAND – On the east coast of Sabah, stay overnight at the lodge so you can see turtles come ashore to lay eggs 365 nights of the year. It is one of the most important turtle breeding spots in South East Asia.

Kota Kinabalu Sabah’s main city is Kota Kinabalu. Razed to the ground by the British and occupying Japanese, the city was effectively rebuilt in the late 1940s. Many of Sabah’s main attractions are within an easy day trip from the city, making it ideal for exploring. The city itself is based on the coast, overlooking a cluster of islands in the South China Sea. To the other side it is backdropped by the towering Crocker Mountain Range with Mt. Kinabalu in the far distance.
