10 Great Reasons to Travel by Train Stress Free What would you rather do? Trek to the outskirts of town, drag your luggage through a crowded airport, contend with cranky security staff, wedge yourself into an airline seat and arrive exhausted. Or stroll through an elegant train station in the middle of town, take a comfortable seat in your carriage, travel at speeds of up to 300km/h while enjoying the scenery, and arrive relaxed with more time to enjoy your destination. Your call!

More Choice Rail networks cover an incredibly diverse range of destinations, allowing you to create your own unique itinerary. Buy an individual point-to-point ticket or enjoy the freedom of a rail pass (in the UK/Europe alone there are more than 50 passes to choose from).

Perfect Timing Trains not only leave on time, they also offer multiple departures every day of the year between most destinations (services on the more popular routes often depart hourly).

Room to Move Train seats are large and comfortable, which means you can sit back, relax and take in the passing scenery. There are also no restrictions on moving around, so any time you feel like it you can stretch your legs or wander down to the bar to enjoy a drink or a bistro meal.

No Excess You can take as much luggage as you like on a rail journey because no one is going to check how much your bags weigh or what you’re carrying. And when you arrive, there’s no waiting at carousels.

Explore Further There’s almost a quarter of a million kilometres of rail tracks and they will carry you through every kind of environment – from rugged coasts and fertile fields to dense forests and mountainous peaks – many of which simply can’t be accessed any other way.

Sleep Over There is something undeniably romantic about an overnight train journey. Whether you indulge in a private sleeper or opt for an affordable and comfortable couchette, you’ll arrive in your destination fresh and ready to make the most of the day.

Save Money Passes offer the convenience of travelling at your own pace, with additional discounts available for groups of two or more, youths and seniors. A rail pass can also provide discounted (and sometimes free) local transport and entry to attractions. Prices for high-speed train tickets are also competitive, particularly when booked in advance. Children up to the age of 11 years travel free on Eurail Passes* conditions apply.

Seamless Connections Many airports – especially those in Europe – offer convenient and efficient rail connections directly into city centres, allowing you to avoid expensive taxi rides and time-wasting traffic jams.

Green Machines High-speed trains are not just a more convenient and comfortable way to travel; they are also more environmentally friendly than air or road travel. * Kids travel FREE on Eurail Passes and must be accompanied by an adult. Limit two free children per adult. Seat reservation fees apply as normal. Not applicable on European East Pass, Balkan Flexipass, RENFE Spain Pass and Central European Triangle Pass.

Which ticket should I buy? With an extensive range of tickets and passes, there is something to suit every itinerary. Not sure what’s best for you? We’ve put together the following guide to assist you in choosing the product that is right for you.

Should I purchase a Pass or Point to Point Tickets? Point to point tickets are valid per rail journey. These are ideally used by travellers who wish to get from Point A to Point B. Point to point tickets are perfect if you are concentrating on only a few routes. If you don’t mind forgoing spontaneity, you can pre-book 2-3 months ahead and your travel dates are set in stone, point to point tickets are often the cheaper option. Costs for over 3,000 individual point to point tickets are available on our website and you can then compare this with the cost of a rail pass. Passes are flexible and a great option if you are travelling for a longer duration and through multiple countries. Travel plans change, spontaneous opportunities arise and last minute decisions are made on a whim. With a Rail pass you have a flexible schedule to stay an extra day, leave earlier or explore another city with new found friends. You could consider more than one pass or combine your pass with point to point tickets before and after to extend your travel time. Each itinerary is unique and different. Why not work out your itinerary by contacting House of Travel for an extensive list of pass and point to point options available. It doesn’t matter if you don’t use all the pass days but it can be handy to have a couple of days up your sleeve for changes in plans or to add an extra couple of day trips.

Benefits of Point to Point Tickets: • Perfect for fewer journeys or when you simply need to book a single journey. • Cost effective way of travelling for shorter journeys. • Point to Point tickets can be combined with a rail pass to ensure you receive value for money. For full terms & conditions relating to rail passes and rail tickets please contact your local House of Travel.

Benefits of a Rail Pass: • Open dated, simply validate your pass prior to your first journey. Eurail Passes must be validated within 11 months from the date they are issued. • Most passes are available in 1st and 2nd class. • Provides unlimited rail trips for the number of days indicated. • Flexible and convenient – you decide where and when you travel. • Remember to purchase your rail pass before you leave as many passes cannot be purchased locally. • Many passes offer bonuses to help stretch your travel dollar further. • Children travel free on all Eurail Passes, German Pass, Swiss Passes and BritRail Passes *conditions apply Note: The Eurail Saver Pass options allow two or more passengers to travel together at all times under one single pass. Saver passes are about 15% cheaper than the normal Adult Pass. * Kids travel FREE on Eurail Passes and must be accompanied by an adult. Limit two free children per adult. Seat reservation fees apply as normal. Not applicable on European East Pass, Balkan Flexipass, RENFE Spain Pass and Central European Triangle Pass.

What is a seat reservation? • Seat reservations guarantee you a seat or sleeping space onboard a train. • Seat reservations are an additional charge and not included in the cost of a rail pass. Point to point tickets are available in 2 forms depending on the type of train you’re travelling on. Most High-speed train tickets include the cost of your seat reservation, for those that do not, there is a small additional cost to pay. This can be organised before you depart. • Reservations are recommended during busy periods and when you need to ensure you are on a particular service. • Discounts are available for pass holders and are subject to availability. • Reservations can be made between 60-120 days prior to the train’s departure date, either before you leave or on arrival in Europe.

Rail Protection Plan If your pass or ticket is lost or stolen, the railway companies will not refund you. House of Travel offers the Rail Protection Plan which covers you in case your rail pass or ticket is lost or stolen in Europe or Japan. The Rail Protection Plan must be purchased at the time you buy your pass or ticket. It’s a small price to pay for peace of mind. 2

Frequently Asked Questions ?

What is a rail travel day? A rail travel day is from midnight to midnight. This entitles you to unlimited travel on any number of trains within this period.

?

What is a rail travel month? It is a calendar month. For example, a pass that begins on 16 September will expire at midnight on 15 October.

?

What is a Saver Pass? Eurail Saver passes are available on many of the passes as an option allowing two or more persons to travel together under one single pass. Saver Pass fares are approximately 15% per person off the regular adult fare and are priced per person. Not all people listed on the Pass have to be on the train together, but only one part of the group can travel separately as there is only one Pass with all names listed. Twin Pass fares are available on the German Rail Pass and only apply to two adults travelling together.

?

Which classes of service are offered? Rail travel offers comfortable accommodations, usually classified as 1st or 2nd class. In all classes, seats are large and comfortable, with ample legroom. Treat yourself and upgrade to upper classes to benefit from extra comfort, delicious meals and more services! You will be surprised to see how affordable it is, especially compared to air travel. Check out the advantages of each class prior to booking. For more information on trains in Europe please see pages 6 - 8.

?

Is it always compulsory to reserve seats? It is highly recommended to always reserve seats when travelling in peak seasons. Seat reservations are mandatory on high-speed trains and should be purchased in advance. Reservations are also required for overnight services. Seat reservations are an additional charge. Some local and regional services do not offer reservations. If you intend to book your rail travel once in Europe, 1st class usually is easier to book as more locals tend to travel in 2nd class.

?

Can I purchase a Eurail/BritRail Pass locally? Not all Eurail passes are available for sale in Europe. Many larger train stations throughout Europe sell Eurail Passes, like the stations with a Eurail Aid Office. However prices for Eurail passes are generally 20% higher than what you would pay for if you bought them before you left. We recommend that you purchase your passes before you depart for your trip. The BritRail Pass is only available to non-UK residents and therefore is only sold outside of the UK and can only be purchased prior to arrival.

?

Where can I view train timetables?

Current timetables are available. Contact your local House of Travel.

?

Are meals offered onboard?

Most long distance trains have a buffet car, or you can get a snack in the bar or from a mobile trolley. Many intercity trains carry a dining car and sometimes a bar. For more information on inclusions for trains in Europe please see pages 6 - 8.

What is the difference between a continuous and a flexi pass? A continuous pass must be used over a consecutive period and is valid for the specific number of days purchased. Whilst a flexi pass allows you to purchase a specified number of days to be used within a longer validity period.

?

?

Am I eligible to buy a Eurail product? Anyone is eligible to purchase a Eurail product, except residents from the countries of Europe, the Russian Federation and Turkey.

?

How much luggage can I take onboard?

There are no weight restrictions on luggage on most trains. All trains have either overhead storage racks, space behind the back of seats or luggage areas at the end of each carriage. Most stations provide storage rooms or lockers.

?

What is the 7pm rule?

If a direct overnight train departs after 7.00pm and arrives after 4.00am the following day on a validated Eurail Global Pass Flexi, Eurail Select Pass or selected single country rail passes, then you only need to write the date you arrive in the calendar box on your pass, provided it falls within the validity of the pass. This means you will not lose two days of your pass when travelling on an overnight service.

?

Is help available if I have a problem in Europe?

Yes. Many train stations have Eurail aid offices which can assist you in Europe. Addresses and telephone numbers of Eurail Aid Offices are available on the Eurail app.

?

Can I travel through a country not covered on my rail pass if I do not get off the train?

No. If you are travelling through a country not covered on your rail pass you will need to purchase an additional point to point fare. Always remember to check the routing of the train before you board.

?

What amenities are available at stations?

Most stations are located conveniently in the heart of the city, offering easy access to hotels and sightseeing as well as a wide range of services, including luggage storage facilities, restaurants, gift shops, foreign exchange, telephones, post offices, book stores, reservations and information.

?

What happens if I lose or misplace my pass?

Passes cannot be reissued or refunded if lost or stolen. House of Travel recommends purchasing rail protection to cover you if your pass is lost or stolen in Europe or Japan (see page 2). You may also want to consider adequate travel insurance prior to your departure.

House of Travel strongly advise you purchase your seat reservations before you depart, as passholder fares are subject to availability and sell out quickly in peak season. Pre-purchasing tickets will also avoid waiting in long queues just to find out that the train you want is fully booked. Detailed conditions for each specific product offered by House of Travel are outlined in the accompanying transportation company documentation at time of ticket issue. Copy of such conditions may be requested prior to purchase. It is the responsibility of the customer to read all documentation prior to commencement of travel.

Travel times & distances When you travel at 300 km/h from one city-centre to another – avoiding crowded airports and clogged traffic – you arrive with plenty of time and energy to discover your destination.

Why travel by rail? Consider your options: Road

Train

•C onfusing sign-posts, missed exits, unfamiliar road laws and impatient drivers – you didn’t travel half way around the world to be stressed out of your mind

• No check-in queues & no security clearances.

•E ven if you are a skillful map reader, there’s a good chance you’ll still get lost.

• No baggage limits – carry it on and stow it in the luggage areas provided.

•P etrol prices, parking fees and road tolls can make rental vehicles unexpectedly expensive.

Air • Taxi fares to and from the airport to the city centre can be expensive. •O nce you’re at the airport you’ll need to check-in, clear security and run for your gate – that means before your flight even leaves the ground you will have been travelling for at least two hours. •B aggage restrictions are confusing, and costly if you’re unlucky enough to tip the scales. •B udget airlines can be cheap, but that’s because they often operate from obscure airports located miles from the city centre.

• No liquid restrictions – forget having to throw away bottles or decanting hand cream into zip-lock bags. • Move around and explore - most trains have food buffet / café style areas where you can eat and drink. •T ravel when it suits you - trains depart frequently so you can choose a time that’s convenient. • Meet the locals – there’s no better way to pick up tips on the best places to visit (and the best to avoid).

Facilities Onboard Rail networks provide a fast and convenient way to explore virtually every corner of Europe and passengers can travel in a variety of different styles - from sleek high-speed services to time-saving night trains. Following is a guide to some of the rail products and on-board services on offer.

Day trains Most European trains offer passengers a choice of 1st or 2nd class seating. In the more spacious 1st Class cabins you will enjoy larger seats offering more leg room and extra space for your luggage. Second Class seats are also comfortable and you can often purchase a snack or a drink from a trolley service or a bar car (where you can chat with locals and fellow travellers).

High Speed Trains Stylish high-speed trains travel at up to 320km per hour in Europe, making them an exciting and super-efficient way to move between major cities. Rail pass holders may be eligible to receive discounts on some high-speed services, but it’s best to request these special fares at the same time that you purchase your rail pass because high-speed trains are very popular (especially during summer and holiday periods).

Sleepers

Couchettes

Reclining seats

Overnight Trains An overnight rail journey in Europe brings to mind romance and adventure, but it’s also an efficient and cost-effective way to travel that allows you to make the most of every day. Most trains offer passengers a choice of comfortable sleeping options, including: Sleepers If you want maximum comfort and complete privacy then opt for a single or twin-share sleeper compartment, where you will find an upper and lower bed, a private washstand, fresh linen and towels. Restrooms are provided at the end of each car (some trains carry deluxe sleepers that include private facilities such as a shower and toilet). Couchettes Typically offered in 2nd Class, a couchette car accommodates between four and six passengers in open, non-private bunks (each containing a sheet, pillow and blanket). Couchette compartments can be either mixed or single sex, with passengers simply sleeping in day clothes. Restrooms and washing facilities are provided at the end of each coach. Reclining seats Even if you’re on a tight budget you can still travel overnight in a reclining seat. These are available in 2nd class on selected trains.

Dining Cars Long distance trains in Europe often operate dining cars (refered to as restaurant carriages in the UK) where you can sit down, relax and enjoy an excellent meal just as you would in a good restaurant (no reservation required). Alternatively many trains offer buffet cars, where you can buy drinks and snacks.

How to use your Eurail Pass The following is a guide and simple instructions on how to use your rail pass. It is important that you have all your documents needed to travel in the countries you plan to visit, including a valid passport and any required visas. We highly recommend that you purchase travel insurance or a rail protection plan to cover you if your pass or ticket is lost or stolen in Europe.

Checking your Eurail Pass carefully

How do I fill in the travel calendar?

When you receive your Eurail Pass, check it very carefully to ensure all details and names are correct as per your passport. If there is a mistake, you will need to return your pass to the point of purchase to have it corrected. You will not be able to use it once in Europe if there is a mistake.

On each day you travel, before you board your first train, it is extremely important that you record the date in the travel calendar printed on the ticket (see the example below). Not doing so is the same as travelling without a ticket, which means you risk a hefty fine or having your pass confiscated by the ticket inspector.

Validating your Eurail Pass A Eurail Pass cannot be used for travelling until the first and last day of validity, validating stamp and passport number are filled in on the Pass. This can be done by an agent, when issuing a Pass, but will generally be done after arrival in Europe. This is referred to as “validating a Pass”.

Enter the day and the month in the correct boxes: write the day in the box marked ‘‘Day”, and the month in the box below, marked ‘‘Month”. • Enter every travel day in a separate box and write in blue or black ink. ie. 3rd May

03 05

It is also important to know that you must validate your Eurail Pass within 11 months of the date of issue. Validation in Europe can be done by a railway official at a ticket window or at a Eurail Aid Office. You can begin your first journey after 00:00 hours on the first day of validity of your pass and you must finish your last trip by 24.00 hours on the last day of validity. Note: You can travel on as many trains as you can fit into one day’s travel. Seat reservations are not included in the cost of your pass. These can be purchased before you go, or when you get to the train station.

11 1 2 3 4 5

Rail Protection Plan If your pass or ticket is lost or stolen, the railway companies will not refund you. House of Travel offers the Rail Protection Plan which covers you in case your rail pass or ticket is lost or stolen in Europe or Japan. The Rail Protection Plan must be purchased at the time you buy your pass or ticket. It’s a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Italy Visit Italy’s famous landmarks, travel from the hills of Tuscany to coastal resorts and towns of the Cinque Terre. Visit the capital city of Italy - Rome, Florence which is home to Michelangelo’s famous statue of David or one of the most beautiful cities in Italy, Venice- famous for its canals and St. Mark’s Square.

Places To Go The Amalfi Coast is a stunning area of Italy’s coastline located south of Naples. The Amalfi Coast containing the famous coastal resort towns of Amalfi & Positano, is known for its picturesque towns, cliffside villages, rugged terrain and unmistakable scenic beauty. Although the Amalfi Coast does not have a train line, it is still accessible by bus services or ferry. From Rome you can take a train down to Naples, and swap to the Private line between Naples and Sorrento. From Sorrento you will then need to take a bus. The private “Circumvesuviana” line from Naples to Sorrento is NOT covered on any Train ticket or Rail Pass. For this travel you will need to purchase a separate ticket in Naples or Sorrento at the station. Tickets from Naples to Sorrento and vice versa are approx. €3 one way per person, and depart every 30 minutes. The train usually goes via Pompeii and will take about 1hr and 10 mins to get from Naples to Sorrento. The Cinque Terre is a coastal area comprising of 5 incredibly beautiful small coastal villages. The Cinque Terre consists of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, all located on the North East coast of Italy. The most common way to get to the Cinque Terre by train from the North of Italy is to go via Genoa or Levanto. If you are coming from the South to the Cinque Terre, the best starting point is La Spezia. Once you get to Levanto or La Spezia you will need to take a regional train to get to one of the 5 villages. There are up to 25 services a day that run this routing in each direction, so you will never have to worry if you miss one.

Sicily is the south-most region of Italy, and the largest Island in the Mediterranean Sea. Located just a couple of kilometres off the tip of the Italian “boot”, Sicily is famed for its beautiful beaches, cuisine and fascinating history.

Bonus Offers Show your pass for these extra bonuses: • Holders of a First class Italy Rail Pass can travel aboard the "Leonardo Express" operating between Roma Termini and Fiumicino Airport. House of Travel can also organise a point to point ticket for travel onboard the Leonardo Express, prices starting from $30. • Free ferry crossings from Villa S. Giovanni (Calabria) to Messina (Sicily).

16

Things to do include exploring the ancient ruins at Siracusa; trekking around the active Volcano Mt Etna, step back in time and visit the Greek temple and amphitheatre in Segesta or go for a walk around the large capital of Palermo and dive head first into the Sicilian way of life. There is so much to see and do in Sicily that you will be spoilt for choice, but don’t miss out on any opportunity to experience as much of their unique culinary delights as possible. The main cities of interest are Palermo, Messina, Agrigento, Catania and Siracusa.

Tuscany is a highly popular region in North Central Italy, rich in history, culture and known for its amazing food, wine and hospitality. Florence is the largest city in the Tuscan region, yet other highlights of the region include the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Chanti wine region, the medieval village of San Gimignano, Duomo of Siena, Duomo of Florence, Lucca and its Roman amphitheatres. Go for a bike ride around the Tuscan hills. Taste some local cheeses and olive oil. Soak up the atmosphere in a busy local restaurant. Trains connect most of the region with many regional trains servicing the main routes. Florence to Pisa is just over an hour by regional train (it is not possible to reserve seats on this service), which passes through some gorgeous small villages giving you a real feel for the Italian countryside.

France Passionate people, gastronomic feasts and superb shopping make France a country not to be missed. Scour the Paris flea markets for antiques, explore charming villages and learn the art of wine tasting. With so much to see and do, the rest of Europe may have to wait until your next holiday!

Places To Go The French Riviera or ‘Côte d’Azur’ as known in France, is one of the most talked-about and well known coastal regions on the Mediterranean Sea. Situated in the South east corner of France, it is known for its high end beachside resorts, luxury hotels, restaurants and celebrity tourists. Among the most popular areas are Nice, Cannes (home of the renowned film festival), Monaco, Saint Raphaël and Saint Tropez. Most of these areas are easily accessible by train, and services are quite frequent. Direct TGV fast trains from Paris to Nice run up to 9 times a day and only take 5 ½ hours. Once in Nice, hop on a regional train heading south and it will take you to Cannes, Saint Raphaël and as far as Frejus. In order to get from Frejus to Saint Tropez, you will need to get off the train at Frejus and either take a bus or hire a car to drive to Saint Tropez as it does not have a train line. If you’re in the area, why not stop by Monaco and check on Monte Carlo? It is a short 22 minute regional train ride from Nice, and it is included for all Passes including France. The Champagne-Ardenne region of France is most famous for one particular thing; Champagne. Explore the Moet & Chandon cellars in Epernay or visit the Mumm Champagne House and Reims Cathedral. This region is a large draw card for lovers of fine wine with plenty of day tours throughout the area on offer. Frequent trains run to Champagne-Ardenne, with direct fast (TGV) trains leaving every hour and only taking 45 minutes. There is also a direct regional service from Paris to Epernay, which takes just over an hour. For those wanting to visit the Moet & Chandon cellars in Epernay, it is short 5 minute walk from the station.

Normandy is a popular region of France located north west of Paris along the coastline of the English Channel. Normandy is teeming with history, including WW II landing sights, battle grounds and fields of poppies. But this is certainly not the only thing this great area has going for it. Normandy is also the home of the delicious Camembert cheese which originated from the small village of Camembert in 1680. Who could forget the famous Le Mont-Saint-Michel located in Normandy, attracting many tourists from near and far to see the world famous fairytale-like abbey perched on a small island in the English Channel. Trains run throughout the region quite regularly and into the main destinations of Caen, Bayeux and Rouen. The area is mainly serviced by French Journey trains; however there are some routings that involve TGV trains. You’ll be able to use any of these trains with any pass that covers France; however any fast (TGV) trains you take will require a compulsory seat reservation before you hop on. Regional trains do not require a seat reservation. E-tickets are also available for TGV trains. More information on TGV trains please refer to page 6.

France Rail Pass This pass provides unlimited travel on the French National Railways (SNCF) including Monaco, either in 1st class or 2nd class.
