General Information Accommodation Ratings To assist with the selection of your Pacific Islands accommodation we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. These are personal ratings offered by our people from their own experience and should therefore be used as a guide only. These ratings may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. Norfolk Island ratings however are based on the official Australian AAA Star Rating Scheme, and therefore the rating descriptions below do not apply to the Norfolk Island section. Standard rooms, clean and comfortable usually with basic furnishings and private en suites. Typically most properties would include a restaurant and bar but have a limited range of other guest facilities and services. Moderate accommodation with a reasonable range of room facilities and comfortable standard, usually with a wide range of recreational and leisure activities available for guest enjoyment. Superior accommodation offering a high level of comfort in rooms with quality furnishings and fixtures. First class accommodation offering the very best quality services with detailed focus on high customer satisfaction. There tends to be greater attention to personalised service and a strong focus on the quality of food and beverages. A half star is noted when the level of service and facilities falls between two grades. Grading accommodation can be quite subjective and generally speaking the standard and services will be in line with the price paid. Please check with your travel consultant to ensure you get the accommodation that best fits your needs. Price Indicator: The price indicator is provided as a guide only. The actual price may differ to that indicated in this brochure due to currency fluctuations, special events or peak periods. Your travel consultant will quote you the actual price at time of booking. Pricing is based in New Zealand dollars. Child Policy: Please note bedding configuration varies between properties and in some cases with different room types within a property. Some hotels also offer family bonuses and specials. Your travel consultant will help you choose the hotel to best suit you and your family’s needs. Look out for our “gems” of information scattered throughout our Pacific Islands brochure.

Pac ific Islands Holiday

Wine & Dine in Noumea

Outer islands of New Caledonia

Get active in Niue

There’s no need to travel to France to experience authentic French cuisine, not when New Caledonia is on the doorstep. Noumea, the capital, is replete with French delicacies - simply step away from your hotel and find an endless array of culinary sensations. From the Escoffier cooking school to roadside food trucks called ‘roulottes’, this is a gourmet city.

Focusing on all that is perfect, Ile des Pins is a 20 minute flight from Noumea and your one way ticket to an untouched paradise. This is where crystal clear lagoons meet platinum white sand and exotic palm trees stand aside towering pine trees. Rent a bike and explore this tiny island at leisure.

Niue is a fantastic destination for getting out and about, whether that’s on land or under the sea. With extensive walking tracks that weave in and around the island, you can easily explore the terrain on foot.

A picnic in the park or on the beach is only half the fun; stopping en route at Municipal Market in Port Moselle is a pleasure in itself. Purchase just baked baguettes and wedges of cheese, and if you’re feeling adventurous, la confiture de banane – vanilla infused banana jam, it’s an island speciality. Head out of the city centre and find restaurants along the beaches of Anse Vata or Baie des Citrons.

2

For a cultural fix, the Loyalty Islands boast three unique islands that cater for visitors: Ouvéa, Lifou and Maré Island. Offering village stays, fishing trips, sculptors, weavers and friendly Kanak locals, it’s believed the Loyalty Islands were named after its inhabitants, for their obvious friendliness. Make sure you take cash and enough snacks to keep you sustained, each island only has one ATM and a limited amount of food stores.

Caves, chasms, tunnels and sink holes also litter the landscape. Anapala chasm is found at the bottom of a formidable 155 steps, while Matapa chasm provides sheltered swimming and Palaha is famed for its limestone formations and small snorkelling pools. If you want to get under the water, Niue always impresses divers with its clarity and up to 80 metres of visibility. Get in and swim with dolphins and sea turtles or for something more sedate, golf courses and fishing excursions are readily available across the island.

The islands of Ha’apai & Vava’u

Norfolk Island – History buffs

Immerse yourself in culture

Tonga’s Vava’u Island has everything you want from a tropical hideout; emerald lagoons, champagne sand and beautiful blue water. Enjoy the island’s shimmering coastline, and get in the sea for surfing, diving and swimming with whales. Gentle Humpbacks frequent the warm waters between June and November. It’s also known as a yachting playground, so sit back and admire the luxury vessels slicing their way through the waves.

Throw away the smart phones and step back in time – Norfolk Island is history come to life. As one of Captain Cook’s many discoveries, the island was first sighted on 29 February 1774. Named after the Duchess of Norfolk, Cook promptly claimed the land as British. From convict settlements and bounty mutineers to WWII airbases, Norfolk has played an important role over the centuries.

Albeit different, cultural traditions across all the Pacific Islands have a certain fluidity that connects them all. Notably, the islands have a strong connection to art, craft and celebration.

For total isolation, Tonga’s Ha’apai group of islands will be more your bag. With reefs, white beaches, one or two volcanoes and not much else, it’s impossible not to relax here. Climb onboard a kayak and start paddling, stopping along the way for a picnic lunch on a deserted island. This is what the word ‘perfection’ was coined for.

Discover more at the Norfolk Island Museum, with its rich collection of exhibitions, restored houses and fascinating artefacts. Or watch descendants of the mutineers bring the famed ‘Mutiny on the Bounty’ story to life with an outdoor show performed in an amphitheatre.

In New Caledonia storytelling retains its importance for the exchange of myths and legend from one generation to the next, whereas in Niue, annual village festivals unite the community and provide the perfect excuse for dance, food, sport and art. Norfolk Island is renowned for its woodturning, which visitors are welcome to watch, and in Tonga, authentic culture abounds. From Sunday church to ceremonial kava drinking, little has changed here. The customs are resolutely traditional and modernity has yet to make much of an impact.

just a two-and-a-half hour flight from Auckland. New Caledonia is like nowhere else in the Pacific – and as soon as you set foot there, you’ll appreciate the source of its very special charm: Mediterranean meets mellow Melanesia. The capital, Noumea, occupies the southern tip of the main island, Grande Terre, with beautiful bays on both sides. It’s sophisticated yet casual and you won’t find anywhere else on earth quite so similar to the French Riviera. The atmosphere in this little city is pure Gallic, with boutiques, patisseries, cheese shops and restaurants lining quaint streets and squares. Explore the Latin Quarter and the old districts of the Vallee du Tir and Vallee des Colons – and you could be in France.

ISLE DES PINS

Just outside the town, on the shores of the world’s largest lagoon, are the stylish resorts of Anse Vata. The lagoon itself is home to a myriad of tropical fish as well as the endangered dugong and rare turtles – a visit to the National Aquarium will give you an insight into this remarkable underwater world. Venture further afield and you’ll find a surprising variety of landscapes on Grande Terre: forests, mountains and wide, grassy plains. And, of course, there’s more to New Caledonia than just one island. The Isle des Pins is a dreamlike paradise on the Tropic of Capricorn and the tranquil, unspoilt Loyalty Islands – Lifou, Maré and Ouvéa – are simply exquisite. If you want to lose yourself in relaxation, these are the places to go. So, for the ideal New Caledonian experience… give yourself time to explore the chic town of Noumea, time to enjoy the resort life of Anse Vata and round it off with time all to yourself on a magical outer island. Perfection!

4

Noumea The Place des Cocotiers is a perfect place to begin an exploration of the Paris of the Pacific. While the ornate bandstand and cafés could be straight from France, towering flame trees and tropical produce at the market add an exotic South Seas touch. The temptations of boutiques offering fashion straight from Paris will keep shoppers engrossed but the beaches of Baie des Citrons and Anse Vata are also irresistible. Getting around is easy, especially if you have all of the hot spots covered on a city orientation tour. One of Noumea’s star attractions is the Tjibaou Cultural Centre, a masterpiece inspired by Kanak architecture. Evenings entice with a host of restaurants, bars and casinos. For a change of pace take a lagoon boat trip to the 140-year-old Amedee Lighthouse. The island’s underwater world waits beyond its beaches.

Our favourite things to see and do Tjibaou Cultural Centre – Discover the unique architecture of the Tjibaou Centre. These bold, modern yet elegant buildings have been designed from the inspiration of traditional Kanak architecture. View fantastic art and artefacts from all over the South Pacific. Amedee Lighthouse – Take an excursion further afield to the Amedee Lighthouse located within a natural marine reserve and home to a large variety of coloured tropical fish. This trip is a must-do for those who like snorkelling. Your excursion includes return catamaran transfers from Noumea, buffet lunch, cultural dancing and a glass bottom boat ride.

Anse Vata Bay – This is the main area for sea activities. It’s also pleasant for a walk along the beach fringed by coconut trees. Numerous hotels, shops, restaurants and night clubs are also located at Anse Vata Bay. Dine at Baie des Citrons – Head to Baie des Citrons where you’ll find restaurants and bars jostling for space with indoor and outdoor seating and all manner of cuisine on offer. From fine French fare to seafood, burgers or pizzas, there’s something for everyone.

are a mecca for passionate foodies - so stock up on gooey (and affordable) French cheeses, foie gras and paté, and get your freshly baked baguettes, croissants or delicious pain au chocolat from the bakeries that are dotted everywhere.

Visit Port Moselle Market – Get down to Port Moselle Market which is open daily from 8am-11am (except Mondays). It’s where fishermen tie up and drop off their catches of fresh tuna. You can also get veges, fruit, olives and breads and have fun perusing the handcrafts, hats, sarongs and jewellery.

Right on the promenade of Anse Vata, this 300 room hotel complex is a great base to explore Noumea. There’s a vast range of amenities on offer, not least of which are the large swimming pool, tropical gardens and an outdoor restaurant/bar. With three properties under one umbrella, there are plenty of room types on offer, from comfortable standard to premium. The hotels are grouped around the pool and sun deck area, are in proximity to numerous restaurants, bars, shops and cafés and a short distance from a water activities centre. Hotel Beaurivage Noumea

2

Hotel Beaurivage is great value for money. It’s chic, contemporary and right on the promenade of the lovely Baie des Citrons – a top location, with excellent swimming across the road. The area is one of the most popular dining destinations for Noumean locals, and there’s good shopping here too, including some of Europe’s best known brands. Central Noumea is a short bus-ride away, and the hotel itself has a beach restaurant. All rooms here have free WiFi and are fully air-conditioned, with ample amenities. With the clear lagoon across the road you’ll have the biggest pool in the South Pacific to enjoy. Boats and windsurfers are not allowed close to this beach, so you’ll have a peaceful time in the water.

Escapade Island Resort

3

With its bungalows and picture-postcard setting, this resort more than lives up to its name. Standing on the shores of a tiny, palm-fringed island, surrounded by a 200 hectare marine reserve, it offers total relaxation. Here, the hardest thing you’ll have to do all day is decide when to reapply the sunblock, or when to take your next swim. There are three types of accommodation, but for maximum romance choose a thatched, overwater bungalow. These spacious bungalows have balconies that face the setting sun, and a flight of steps leading straight into the blue waters of the lagoon. If you prefer to keep your feet on dry land, there are garden and beachside bungalows offering excellent amenities in a beautiful setting. Less than 30 minutes by boat from Noumea, Escapade really is a world apart. Facilities include a restaurant, swim-up bar, pool, massage, boutique and water activities centre.

Ramada Hotel & Suites Noumea

You’ll have plenty of space to spread out and enjoy your stay at this 4-star property in the heart of Anse Vata – the rooms and suites are huge! Perfectly positioned for beach or business, it overlooks the lagoon on one side, and the island’s picturesque racecourse on the other. But, for the best views of all, be sure to dine at the revolving rooftop restaurant; it’s the only one in Noumea and well worth a visit. After a busy day, the ‘Le Rendez-Vous’ sports bar located on-site is a fun place to unwind with a drink in hand while sampling the pub style menu. A day spa provides holistic pampering and the rooms all have kitchen facilities which is great when you feel like a light meal or a quiet, private evening. There’s also a big range of business facilities. For a day on the sands, take a very short stroll to Anse Vata and check out the water sports at Plages Loisirs. There are water and beach sports equipment available, including snorkelling gear, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. Add to this a dedicated kids club and worldclass spa facility and you have a resort that will cater for all. But perhaps the best thing of all about this place is its location. Built on an incredible 20,000 acre site overlooking a UNESCO World Heritage lagoon and a full 13 kilometres of beach, it provides a new, exciting look at New Caledonia – 90 minutes from Tontouta International Airport and two hours north of Noumea on the island’s west coast. Ile des Pins

© Ethnotrack/NCTPS

Tropical island fantasies meet reality on the Ile des Pins, a 20 minute flight from Noumea. Crystal lagoons lap white sand beaches, which in turn are fringed with the island’s unique combination of flora, palms and stately Araucaria pines. Both Kanumera and Kuto Bays are well known in the Ile des Pins. Kanumera is great for snorkelling especially around the Sacred Island as the bay is rich with sea life. Kuto Bay is your more idyllic, postcard perfect beach where the water is clear and shallow and the sand is a soft as powder. While the beaches are almost irresistible, Ile des Pins also has other nooks and crannies to explore. Like the ever intriguing caves. Don’t miss the Oumagne Grotto, better known as the Cave of Queen Hortense, steeped in myth and legend. Or take your camera and visit the remains of a 19th century convict settlement at Ouro where you can freely walk around the crumbling walls of the old gaol. Ile des Pins is only 18 kilometres by 14 kilometres so exploring is easy – rent a car, bike or scooter and discover your own piece of paradise. We recommend you plan a stay of at least three days to get the most out of your holiday.

Loyalty Islands

© P. Dancel/NCTPS

There may be no better places than the Loyalty Islands for combining quintessential tropical island activities (or no activity at all!) with encounters with the friendly Kanak locals and their unique culture. The three islands that cater for visitors are, Ouvéa, Lifou and Maré. Lifou is the largest island, with small coves, limestone caves, grottos and cliffs sheltering secluded beaches. Check out Jinek Bay Marine Reserve, one of the Pacific’s most pristine spots, with some of the biggest varieties of coral and more than 2000 fish species. Maré is a relatively untouched treasure and has mysterious sunken pools in its rugged interior. Yejele Beach is a highlight with its large stretch of white sand and fantastic swimming and snorkelling. Ouvéa’s 25 kilometre long beach, superb lagoon and rare parakeets give it special charm. Ask a friendly guide to take you to Mouli Bridge where you can enjoy magnificent views and swim with rays, turtles and sharks. Don’t miss trying bougna, a local dish that includes sweet potato and taro.

Loyalty Islands Accommodation

Oasis de Kiamu, Lifou

1

Affordable, away from it all, and ideal for families, this small resort is nestled among coconut trees at the base of a cliff, just a few steps from a sandy cove. It offers friendly service and great value, and there’s just 14 rooms in all, so you’ll never feel crowded. There’s a bar, pool and restaurant, and airport transfers are provided. Settle into Lifou’s gentle way of life and enjoy days spent on the lagoon, or exploring the delightful scenery - you’ll love it.

Drehu Village, Lifou If the idea of a boutique resort on a remote and beautiful island sounds like you, take a close look at what’s on offer here. Lifou is the largest of the Loyalty group, just 40 minutes by air from Noumea, and Drehu Village is a tranquil little group of semi-detached and stand-alone bungalows on magnificent Chateaubriand Bay. There’s a bar, pool and restaurant, plus a range of water sports. Also be sure to make time for a visit to Lifou’s dramatic cliffs while you’re there.

2

Nengone Village, Maré Maybe you’ve never heard of Maré (pronounced Ma-ray) and its many charms, but once you’ve been to this lovely island, you won’t forget it. Nengone Village is a hidden treasure on its south coast, set by a dazzling white cove and sheltered by pines and palms. Enjoy the water sports, explore the island’s dramatic scenery, or just laze by the beach in this true holiday haven. It’s only 35 minutes by air from Noumea and accommodation is in attractive, individual bungalows.

3

Hotel Le Paradis D’Ouvéa, Ouvéa

4

Elegant, avante-garde Le Paradis is officially the only hotel on Ouvéa and it certainly is paradise – though in fact it’s on the tiny, tropical islet of Mouli! Mouli is connected to the larger island by bridge, but it’s a world apart. The setting is dream-like, with sands white enough to dazzle you and sea, a clear, aquamarine blue. Relaxation is the prime activity here, or you can hire a scooter and explore. There’s plenty to see in this beautiful corner of the world.

hour flight from Auckland. That’s because, with just under 130 guest rooms, there are often more whales visiting in season than human visitors! Niue is one of the world’s largest raised coral atolls and is home to around 1600 hospitable residents. There’s no such word as rush-hour on Niue, it’s one of the world’s safest destinations and you don’t need foreign exchange – Niue uses the Kiwi dollar. What many people don’t know is that Niue is far from tiny – it’s over four times the size of Rarotonga. A quarter of the island is clothed in pristine rainforest and almost the entire island is surrounded by 20 to 30 metre cliffs, and dramatic beautiful chasms and coves provide perfect swimming spots. Niue is also honeycombed with some of the South 2 Pacific’s most spectacular and extensive caves. The island is encircled by a 64 kilometre coastal road so bikes are a great way to get around, although you can also hire a car. Diving and snorkelling around Niue’s coast is renowned for its water clarity and the richness of its marine life. Swimming with humpback whales (in season) is unforgettable and thanks to Niue’s deep surrounding waters, you can sip a cocktail and marvel at these awesome giants breaching just 50 metres from shore.

– If you’re heading to Niue on holiday, chances are you’re the kind of person who appreciates places with a difference, and we’re sure you’ll love this one. Instead of silver sands, you’ll find sea caves, rainforest and mysterious chasms, and a world that centres around the ocean. In fact, ‘Matavai’ means eye on the water (mata - eye, vai - water), and it’s an appropriate name for this wonderful clifftop resort with its sweeping Pacific panorama. Scenic Matavai Resort Niue comprises three properties and has a wide range of room types on offer.

Scenic Matavai Resort Niue - Ocean View Room

Both the 3-star studio apartments and the villa are located a 5 minute drive away from the main resort itself. The studios offer good value for money with magnificent ocean views. There are five duplex units, each divided into two spacious studios. Large private balconies make the most of the views and all rooms are well equipped with a kitchen for self-catering. Other on-site facilities include a freshwater swimming pool, trampoline, a BBQ area and access to a sea-track. The villa is situated adjacent to the studios and this super spacious home away from home offers all sorts of holiday options for families or groups. It has a garden setting, with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, full kitchen plus a BBQ and al fresco dining deck. The 4-star resort features the gorgeous, newly built Superior Rooms. Alternatively, choose a recently refurbished Ocean Room, both come with private balconies, air conditioning and super-sized beds. There are 12 new deluxe guest rooms planned to open in July 2017. These rooms will be contained in a new block and feature some subtle differences in style and comfort to the Superior rooms. The reef with its pools, breakers and intriguing sea tracks lies just below the resort, and the entire place was planned to merge unobtrusively into the unique surroundings. The resort has an excellent restaurant and two bars with live entertainment and cultural shows to keep you entertained.

Tali’s Cave Tours*

The Commodore’s Orientation Tour A not to be missed tour for an introduction to Niue for the first-time traveller or, even if you’re a repeat visitor, you’ll learn from a knowledgeable guide, a little of the history, the culture and see some of Niue’s iconic locations all in the comfort of an air conditioned mini bus.

For the most rewarding and safe experience join Tali’s Cave Tour, a family-run tour of Niue’s limestone caverns. Niue is riddled with caves but many of them shouldn’t be visited on your own. In fact, there are so many on the island that up until the mid 1800s most locals lived in them. These caves are located on traditional family land and are known for their variety of passageways.

Toamana Fishing Charters Niue’s legendary among fishermen and is one of the best kept fishing possie secrets left in the world. Its distance from any other major landmass, the wide range of in-shore fish and clear waters combine to attract the ‘big ones’ that fishermen dream of. Big fish like wahoo, tuna and marlin are often caught and the deep waters hide all sorts of surprises.

*This tour is paid direct

Uga Tour The uga or coconut crab is said to be the largest hermit crab in the world. While it spends all its adult life on land, it must return to the sea to release its eggs. The tour provides an opportunity to see and capture the uga in its natural habitat. The tour is in two parts – the first is to lay the bait during daylight hours. The second part takes place at night when the crab comes out to feed on the bait.

Avatele Village Tour The village of Avatele on the southern coast was one of the early trading stations when sailing ships plied the oceans on trade winds from the east. Its sandy cove was an attractive landing place for sailing ships. It could be said that the history of Niue is encapsulated in this one village – from a trading station, to early missionaries and to the island’s first elected Premier.

history and breathtakingly beautiful, Norfolk Island is as enchanting and quaint as its friendly locals who have lived on this tiny island for generations, many of whom are descendants of those famous Bounty Mutineers. You’ll find it hard to believe, as you drive down quiet country roads or walk through the soaring trees of the national park, that this could ever have been the setting for such a checkered and at times gruesome past: firstly as the site of two penal colonies, then as a new home for descendants of the Bounty Mutineers.

beautiful islands, divided into four groups, are scattered like pearls across 700,000 square kilometres of ocean. There is no shortage of deserted beaches and pristine anchorages here, and the swimming, snorkelling and diving are exceptional. The main island, Tongatapu, is home to the capital Nuku’alofa, and to most of the kingdom’s resorts. Many of these are familyowned and personal, because Tonga likes to welcome its visitors in low-key style - this is a place for simpler living and genuine encounters with the local people. With about a third of all Tonga’s population living here, Nuku’alofa can be a surprisingly bustling place but its size also means there’s a great array of restaurants, nightclubs and dynamic cultural shows. There’s plenty to see too, such as the Talamahu Markets with its mounds of fresh produce and selection of handcrafts, including wood carving and jewellery. Although the Royal Palace is not open to visitors, you can admire this white-timber 19th century building from the waterfront. Try to time your visit to town to include a Sunday. Tongans are ardent churchgoers and their singing is legendary. Everyone’s welcome but make sure to pack your Sunday best.

Tongatapu Accommodation & Sightseeing

Heilala Holiday Lodge

1

The homely and super-peaceful Heilala Holiday Lodge offers some of the best surfing and snorkelling on the island, and definitely the most beautiful sunsets! It’s perfectly positioned at the tip of Tongatapu by two stunning beaches, Ha’atafu and Kanokupolu, where the water is as clear as glass. And, as you would expect, life here revolves around the beach; your choice of snorkelling, swimming, kayaking, sunbathing or dozing under a palm tree on the sand. Your accommodation will be in a traditional style fale, with a choice of Superior or the more basic but still very comfy Tongan. Both are cooled by ceiling fans and have insect screens on all windows.

Liku’alofa Beach Resort

2

Liku’alofa Beach Resort is situated on the west coast of Tongatapu, fringed with palm trees, surrounded by lush tropical gardens and sits along a stretch of white sandy beach. It’s a 35 minute drive from Fua’amotu International Airport, so you’ll be unpacked and relaxing ‘Tongan style’ in no time. If you’d rather keep busy, check out the snorkelling and kayaking, enjoy a leisurely cycle, discover the island paradise of Fafa or Pangimotu, take a full island tour or swim with the whales (seasonal July-October). Make sure your stay includes a Wednesday or Friday night for the hotel’s legendary Island Night.

Fafa Island Resort

3

Fafa is tiny and unspoilt, with just a handful of fales on its palm-fringed shores – they are seriously gorgeous! If you’re hoping to immerse yourself in a South Seas dream, this is the place to go. Privacy and peace are paramount here, with fales built as far from one another as possible. They are very stylishly furnished, and in true Tongan style have high, cathedral ceilings, thatched walls, big coconut beams and poles and wooden shingle roofs. Each has its own outdoor space, with hammock, beach beds and shady palms, and a bathroom opening out to a secluded flower garden and outdoor shower.

Fafa Island

Scenic Hotel Tonga

4

Located across the road from the airport and in the southern region of Tongatapu, it is close to the island’s secluded eastern beaches, limestone caves and dramatic cliff walks. You can spot humpback whales from nearby cliffs at Hufangalupe during the migration season or take a picturesque half hour drive into the capital, Nuku’alofa. Set in spacious grounds, enjoy a spot of mini golf with the new 18-hole putt putt course, golf driving range and kids playground. Scenic Hotel Tonga offers 76 spacious air conditioned guest rooms, a restaurant, bar and WiFi.

Nuku’alofa City Tour

Island Day Trip

This fun and informative walking tour is a great way to experience and familiarise yourself with the kingdom’s capital, Nuku’alofa. In addition to visiting the Royal Palace and Royal Tomb, you’ll visit Talamahu Market, the kingdom’s main fresh produce hub. It’s a hive of activity here particularly on Saturday mornings. Another highlight of this tour is the Langafonua Handicrafts Centre which stocks the best range of traditional Tongan handicrafts and fine arts including traditional tapa cloth, woven crafts from pandanus leaves, Tongan jewellery and wooden carvings. A must for first time visitors.

Take a day cruise out to one of the two offshore islands, Royal Sunset Island Resort located on Atata Island a 55 minute boat ride north-west of Nuku’alofa, or Fafa Island a comfortable 30 minute boat ride North of the capital. There’s time aplenty to swim and snorkel in crystal clear waters, join in the daily resort activities or simply relax on the white sand beaches – the choice is yours! You’ll capture many fascinating sights of Tonga’s capital, Nuku’alofa from the boat as you head out. The two islands are easily accessible and close by so you’ll get the most out of your day in paradise.

If you’re in search of empty white sands and brilliant blue waters, Vava’u is your perfect choice. This tropical archipelago has one large island and a host of smaller ones, all with shimmering lagoons, hidden coves and superb diving sites. Neiafu, the main centre, lies on the shores of the Port of Refuge, a magnificent deep-water harbour. It’s the prettiest town in Tonga, and has a Saturday market, plus shops, cafés, bars and restaurants. Ha’apai, on the other hand, has no towns at all. It’s a faraway world of atolls, lagoons and white sand – an untouched slice of pure Polynesia, where most islands are tiny and uninhabited. The main centre is the friendly village of Pangai on Lifuka, with a lone bank and a few small stores. Ha’apai is way off the beaten track, and if you’re looking for somewhere untouched by time, you’ll love it here. Whale watching, swimming with whales and kite-surfing are on offer and there’s history too: it was in these islands that the Bounty Mutiny took place.

Jet Powered Kayak Tours, Vava’u*

Target One Gamefishing, Vava’u*

Every year from July to October the serene islands of Ha’apai provide a safe haven for one of Mother Nature’s most captivating creations the majestic Humpback whales. They are often spotted from a boat, and if you’re a thrillseeker why not get into the water and get up close and personal with these visitors. There’s a vast array of interesting behaviour that may be witnessed - from a single breath, graceful spyhop or powerful tail slaps to continual full body breaching or inquisitive approaches to the boat – this can be a truly life changing experience and one that relatively few people will ever get the chance to enjoy.

Climb onboard your own powered kayak and your experienced guide will lead you on your water adventure to some of the most stunning places in the kingdom. You’ll explore uninhabited islands, caves, blowholes, striking coral reefs, white sand beaches and see some of the best kept secrets in Vava’u. This is a fun and exhilarating way to spend time on the water offering ultimate freedom and it’s simple to use, easy to control and has incredible manoeuvrability. Be sure to keep your eyes open as you may encounter a whale or two ( July to October).

You can target one or many species, in all cases you’ll have great fishing onboard the reliable and very successful ‘Target One’, an eight and a half metre game and sportfishing boat. Skipper Henk and his experienced deckhand will make sure you have a great day out on the water, whether you are a novice or an experienced angler. The boat is well equipped and maintained with top quality tackles and lures. Henk and his crew have set many local and national sportfishing records so they know the best fishing spots and can have you out there in no time at all – you’re sure to have a fishing experience of a lifetime.

At this resort you can snorkel straight off the white sandy beach into an abundance of colourful reef and fish!

Friendly Islands Kayak Company The lush tropical islands of Vava’u and Ha’apai are home to Friendly Islands Kayak Company. Whilst the islands are separated by reefs or open water, they are not great paddling distances apart so there’s plenty of time to kayak the warm waters, snorkel amidst colourful coral and inside legendary marine caves, and observe the traditional way of life of the Tongan people. Your most difficult choice will be deciding on which kayak tour to do. Vava’u’s hilly terrain is perhaps more interesting and scenic but if it’s white sand beaches you’re after, there’s no shortage of these in Ha’apai. Snorkelling’s superb in both island groups, but soft corals and sizeable fish are more abundant in Ha’apai waters. On the other hand, Vava’u’s relatively sheltered waters are conducive to more reliable whale sightings between July and October.
