General Information Accommodation Ratings To assist with the selection of your accommodation we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. These are personal ratings offered by our people from their own experience and should therefore be used as a guide only. These ratings may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. Moderate accommodation with a reasonable range of rooms and facilities, with rooms furnished to a comfortable standard. Superior standard of accommodation with a wide range of rooms and facilities, and a higher standard of service. First Class accommodation with an excellent range of facilities and services. Accommodation in this rating is considered among the best in the country. A half star is noted when the level of service and facilities falls between two grades. Grading accommodation can be quite subjective and generally speaking the standard and services will be in line with the price paid. Please check with your travel consultant to ensure you get the accommodation that best fits your needs. Child Policy: A child is considered 2-11 years of age. Please note bedding configuration varies between properties and in some cases with different room types within a property. Some hotels also offer family bonuses and specials. Your travel consultant will help you choose the hotel to best suits you and your family’s needs. Price Indicator: The price is provided as a guide only. The actual price may differ to that indicated in this brochure due to currency fluctuations, special events, trade shows or peak periods. Your travel specialist will quote you the actual price at the time of booking. Pricing is in New Zealand dollars.

Japan Japan is a majestically mountainous country surrounded by the ocean, lined with many waterways, and abundant in nature. As the country stretches some 3000 kilometres north to south, it encompasses a range of climates from subarctic to subtropical with four distinct seasons, meaning there is no shortage of activities to be enjoyed year round. Spring time, March to May, is when the cherry blossoms bloom, with the first week of April hailing as the best time for viewing in the major cities of Tokyo and Kyoto. Viewing parties known as hanami are a popular way to admire the transient beauty of Japan’s iconic blooms. Summer in Japan brings traditional festivals and firework displays, whereas Autumn brings the cooler crisper weather and the brilliant red and gold foliage known as Koyo. Late October to November is the peak time to view Koyo as the leaves change from the north and make their way southwards, painting the landscapes. Then all the ski junkies take their annual pilgrimage from around the world to descend on Japan for their powder snow and steaming onsens.
6 Tips for your Holiday
3 / CONVENIENCE STORES OR ‘CONBINI’ Convenience stores, known as ‘conbini’ in Japan are truly as convenient as they are ubiquitous. Even small country towns will have at least one conbini, whether it’s a 7-Eleven, Famima (Family Mart) or one of the seemingly dozens of other chains. Not only can you get snacks, drinks and basic toiletries, you can also get hot food. In addition you can often find an ATM as well.
1 / AUTUMN LEAVES (KOYO) Most people are aware of Japan’s iconic cherry blossoms in spring, but the beauty of the autumn leaves season is extremely underrated. Imagine walking through an ancient temple and gazing out of the window to a sea of fiery red and gold autumn foliage. The viewing season is called ‘koyo’ and can be enjoyed much longer than cherry blossoms, starting as early as late September up north and as late as December in the south. 2 / ATTENDING A SUMO TOURNAMENT
Watching a live sumo tournament is an experience not to be missed. Tournaments are held in Japan six times a year at four different venues (Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka). Advance tickets are usually sold from one month prior or general admission tickets are usually available on the day of the event.
2
5 / DINING – THE EXPENSIVE AND THE NOT SO EXPENSIVE There is much more to Japanese cuisine than sushi and sashimi. Each region has developed its own local delicacies offering something to suit all tastes and budgets. The ‘Kaiseki’ cuisine is usually served at Ryokan or other high end establishments and is the ultimate form of Japanese haute cuisine. Izakayas on the other hand are considered Japanese style pubs, serving tapas/small plates designed to be shared and usually offer an extensive alcoholic drinks menu – some even offering all you can drink menu plans.
Higashiyama, Kyoto
4 / WEAR SLIP ON SHOES AND NICE SOCKS If you visit a restaurant, traditional Ryokan, or someone’s home and encounter tatami, the straw mats used for flooring in traditional Japanese buildings, you will need to take off your shoes. So wear comfy slip on shoes to make it easy when coming and going from these places. Some places will provide indoor slippers for you to wear when walking through the tiled or wood-floored hallways, but when you get to a room with tatami floors, you’ll need to remove the slippers, so leave the socks with a hole over the big toe at home.
6 / FESTIVALS Matsuri (festivals) are lively cultural community events which take place in Japan year round so you can always time your visit to include one. They are held throughout all of Japan, but often in the summer time (JulyAugust). Notable festivals include Tokyo’s Sanja Matsuri in May. Gion Matsuri held in Kyoto in July. Nebuta Matsuri held in Aomori in the first week of August and Sendai’s Tanabata Matsuri, also held in the first week of August.

Experience
Japan
If you are a first time visitor to Japan the popular destinations are dotted along a route
from Tokyo through Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima. This area is often referred to as the ‘Golden Route’ and it showcases a unique blend of traditional and modern Japan. Tokyo being the nations capital and epitome of modernity whereas Kyoto encompasses elaborate shrines, temples and gardens, with cobbled stone streets through rows of historic houses. Osaka is a foodies haven and offers fabulous shopping while Hiroshima offers a sobering experience but highly recommended. If you are visiting Japan for a second time or have a bit more time to travel around, then the Second Golden Route offers a uniquely authentic travel experience through smaller regional towns. The quaint town of Takayama is nestled in the mountains of Gifu prefecture. The historic castle and merchant town is famous for its traditional townscape, lined with sake breweries and small shops. Travel 50 minutes by bus and you arrive at the World Heritage-listed thatched roofed village of Shirakawago offering a glimpse into Japanese rural life. Continue on for another 1 hour and 15 minutes and you can explore the beautiful town of Kanazawa. It is home to one of Japans top gardens. You will fall in love with the rows of preserved samurai residences and one of the few active geisha districts, with teahouses that open their doors to tourists. You can also reach Kanazawa from Tokyo using the shinkansen in approximately 2.5 hours.

The Garden Route Our favourite things to see and do Mt. Fuji – Japans most iconic mountain was inscribed as a World Heritage-site in 2013. Standing at 3776 metres it can be admired from afar on a clear day. If you want to climb Mt. Fuji the trails are only open from early July to mid September in the summertime.
Maiko and Geisha Performances – Watching a maiko

(apprentice geisha) or geisha perform in a teahouse is one of the most unique and exclusive experiences in Japan. Performances can usually been seen in the daytime accompanied by a Japanese tea ceremony, or during the evenings, with a Japanese banquet.
Karaoke – Karaoke originated in Japan, so it should be no surprise that it is a popular form of night time entertainment. They are open all night long, charging an hourly fee per person. Grab your friends or make new ones and have some fun.

Visit a Shrine – Shrines and temples represent the essence of Japanese culture, with some dating back over 1000 years. They can be found throughout Japan. Buddhist temples often boast impressive architectural design and manicured gardens making them a lovely place to wander around. Many of the temples and shrines in Japan are World Heritage-sites and are considered a must visit.
Theme Parks – If you are a thrill seeker or travelling with the family, then Japan has a good variety of theme parks. Tokyo Disney Resort is made up of two parks - Disney and DisneySea. Osaka is home to Universal Studios, and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter attracts many fans of all ages. At the foot of Mt. Fuji is Fuji Q Highland; the park boasts some of the world’s scariest rollercoasters and a terrifying haunted house.

Himeji Castle – With its pure white appearance it has been given the nick name of ‘White Egret’ Castle. Himeji reopened in 2015 after an extensive restoration over a five year period. Easily accessible by train on the main Tokaido/Sanyo shinkansen line between Kyoto and Hiroshima.

Ryokan Unique Experience
© JNTO
Ryokan To experience the quintessential Japan, a stay in a Ryokan is a must. A Ryokan is a traditional Japanese Inn that have existed for many centuries. A typical Ryokan has a relatively large entrance. Guest rooms are constructed using traditional Japanese methods. Tatami matted floors, communal bathing areas (known as ofuro), usually segregated by gender and using the water from a nearby hot spring (onsen), and guests can wear the Japanese Yukata, more commonly known as a cotton robe. Staying at a Ryokan will bring you back to your senses. Bedding is a futon spread out on the tatami floor. When guests first enter their room, they usually find a table and some supplies for making tea. The table is also used for meals when guests take them in their room. While guests are out, staff (usually called nakai) will move the table aside and set out the futon Most Ryokan offer dinner and breakfast, which are often included in the price of the room. Most visitors take their meals at the Ryokan, which usually promote themselves on the quality of their food and service levels. Meals typically consist of traditional Japanese cuisine known as kaiseki, which features seasonal and regional specialties. Traditional Ryokans are more commonly found in rural scenic parts of Japan. A little harder to find in the metropolis of Tokyo and Osaka, and often more expensive than a hotel, nonetheless some major cities do offer this style of accommodation. © Japan Ryokan Association; JNTO

Onsen Unique Experience
© Tourism Commission of Hakuba Village; JNTO
Onsen The onsen is a Japanese Hot Spring that has a very long history and an intimate part of Japanese culture and are commonly found attached to Ryokan. As a volcanically active country, Japan has over three thousand onsens scattered throughout the country. Onsens come in many types and shapes, including outdoor and indoor baths. Traditionally, onsens were located outdoors, although a large number of inns have now built indoor bathing facilities as well. Traditionally, men and women bathed together, but gender separation has been enforced since the opening of Japan to the West. Mixed bathing exists at some onsen in rural areas. Onsens are created from water heated naturally underground, and the water varies both in degrees and in mineral composition. The water is piped into the Ryokans or other establishments, and then regulated at various temperatures. At many Ryokans, there will be large indoor onsen for both men and women. They may often have several pools with wall-length windows where you can look out over a garden, river, or another natural setting. The interior may be lined with natural rocks and decorated with various kinds of tropical plants. There are also outdoor onsen called “rotenburo.” At some Ryokans they can be found nearby, and they are often open all night. The outdoor onsens can be more rustic than the indoor onsens, and often they do not have any changing rooms. © Japan Ryokan Association; JNTO
Etiquette: -- Onsen are generally gender separated, usually marked with a red curtain for women and blue curtain for men. This can change throughout the day, so be careful! -- When entering the onsen, there will be a change room with wicker basket shelves. This is where you undress, you can't wear swimmers and you can only take a small (modesty) towel with you into the bathing area. -- The first thing you'll see is the shower/bathing area. Sit on a stool and clean yourself from top to toe, ensuring all soap and shampoo has been rinsed off. -- Now head to the baths. If you have long hair, it's best if it's tied up so it doesn't go in the water. Look for the rotenburo (outdoor bath) as they have the best views. It can feel a bit funny going outside completely nude, but it's worth i! -- Keep your small towel to the side, out of the water. You can even place it on your head if you like.

Temple Stay Unique Experience
Temple Stay If you are after something unique then a stay at a Buddhist Temple, otherwise known as a shukubo, could be something to consider. Shukubo offer an excellent chance to experience the simple, austere lifestyle of Buddhist monks, while staying at a functioning temple. Often set in tranquil Japanese gardens, a shukubo lets you feel the culture and history of Japan, including zazen, which calms your mind and offers healthy shojin vegetarian dishes. The meals at temple lodgings are often served in small dishes and arranged to emphasize seasonal ingredients and themes. Although they are often subtly flavoured and simply seasoned, the meals are nonetheless delicious. Alcoholic drinks, such as beer and sake, may or may not be available.
Š Tokozenji; JNTO
They encourage their visitors to participate in morning prayer which typically start early around 6am and last for about thirty to sixty minutes. The ceremonies differ depending on the Buddhist sect that the temple belongs to. Some temple lodgings offer their guests the chance to experience a few other activities, such as zazen meditation or waterfall meditation. The level of difficulty and guidance varies. Temples typically provide their guests with simple, traditional Japanese style rooms featuring tatami matted floors and sliding doors (fusuma). Toilets and sinks are usually shared among guests and sometimes with the monks as well. The temples may also offer communal, gender-segregated baths, which are also shared between the guests and possibly with the monks. Futon bedding is provided along with simple amenities. Only a small number of temples offer shukubo accommodation. They are most common around popular pilgrimage destinations such as Nagano, Kyoto, Mount Mitake and Dewa Sanzan. But the most popular destination to experience a temple stay is at one of over 50 shukubo on Mount Koya, where the monks are accustomed to foreign guests and reservations can be made relatively easily in English.
