Fiji - off the beaten track The alluring Fiji archipelago brings to mind endless lagoons, gently swaying palm trees and the most perfect blue stretching from the sky down to the sea.

F

iji offers all this and more with plenty of off the beaten track adventures to give you a break away from the resorts and pools – if you dare!

Denarau, Coral Coast and the Mamanuca Islands are always bustling with tourists, so consider visiting Vanua Levu, Taveuni, the Sun and Pacific Coasts for a bewitching Fijian adventure.

FIJI’S NORTH - SECLUDED SPLENDOUR

Venture up north to Vanua Levu and Taveuni. These islands are known for being even more laid back than your average Fijian resort and they’re only an hour’s flight away from Nadi or Suva, Fiji’s main cities. Both islands are otherworldly in their beauty and leave visitors awestruck. You might say that this is the ‘real Fiji’. Smaller, intimate resorts here aim to

amalgamate luxury with sustainable, eco-tourism values. Divers will love the Rainbow Reef, Great White Wall and Vuna Reef with their contrasting colours and abundance of sealife. Make your way to Savusavu town and visit the hot springs, used by locals for cooking root crops. Spend a day out on the water game fishing, then head down the main street and choose from a variety of restaurants and bars and see how the locals like to wind down. Enter the mists of Tavenui’s tropical rainforest and majestic mountains and discover more than 100 species of birds. Trek to Des Voeux Peak as the sun comes up for a great shot at seeing birds soar through the orange-red sky.

WATCH THE SUNSET - THE SUN AND PACIFIC COASTS

The Sun Coast, a beautiful coastal region stretching around the northern shores of Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu, will transport you back in time. As you wander its dry, dusty streets, sugar trains chug past and time stands still. Along the coast is Rakiraki, the gateway to Dolphin Island Resort with its own special New Zealand connection - it’s a sister property to Taupo’s Huka Lodge. Arrive by private boat to this exclusive, intimate accommodation and bask in the sun while you enjoy tropical cocktails, juicy papayas and mangoes, and absolute tranquillity. Glimpse Fijian culture on the Pacific Coast, just south of Suva, famous for its adventurous streak. Watch the firewalkers of Beqa Island brave molten rock and delight in singing, dancing and storytelling around a bonfire on the beach with the locals. Truly a memorable experience to behold. At sunrise, jump on a board for a spot of surfing or raft through the Upper Navua River’s breathtaking gorges amidst the shrouded rainforest. Cascading waterfalls, rapids and canyons showcase the true essence of this rugged and untouched part of Fiji. You can also soar along a 45-metre zipline above the rainforest for aweinspiring views. You might even spot a flying fox or tree frog!

residence in Albert Park, or amble through the Thurston Botanical Gardens and visit the city’s museum. For a local slice of life, head to the markets for a spot of bargain hunting. Look out for traditional tattoo designs inspired by the lines, curves and symmetry of the Tapa cloth. The art of tattooing originally spread from Samoa to Fiji, where it evolved into its own art form.

THE BEST OF THE REST

You may also want to enjoy the tranquillity of the Yasawa Islands, several hours on a fast catamaran from the coast of Nadi. Stroll, swim and socialise with locals in the village. Whilst there are some world class resorts in this region, there is a good range of simple accommodation that makes for genuine interactions with Yasawa’s inhabitants. Share in a bowl of kava with the locals and you might just make a friend for life. Jump on and off a Feejee Experience bus as it circum-navigates Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu. The drivers will book your accommodation along the way plus transport you to many adventurous activities throughout the day. Try out sand-boarding, sea kayaking, waterfall swims, kava ceremonies and more, with friendly guides who will be delighted to explain their way of life.

You can also explore the Beqa Lagoon aboard a jet ski or head to Fiji’s capital, Suva. Immerse yourself in the island’s rich colonial past by visiting the president’s

IMMERSE YOURSELF in the Cook Islands

A journey to the Cook Islands is the perfect island escape. Relaxation, romance, family fun and adventure…you can have it all in this tropical paradise.

E

verywhere the scenery is spectacular. With turquoise blue lagoons fringed by coral reefs and stunning white-sand beaches, to craggy volcanic peaks and dense jungles, it’s all picture perfect. As Pacific explorer James Upton said: "If you've not travelled to the Cook Islands, you will never really know what beauty is." There’s a wonderful familiarity for Kiwis, many products are the same as back home and the NZ dollar is an added bonus.

A FASCINATING HISTORY

The rich cultural heritage continues today, with music, art and craft, a significant part of everyday life. Make sure you enjoy song and dance like you’re a local.

Most hotels host ‘Island Nights’ that showcase vibrant culture, or you can head to Staircase Restaurant and Bar in Avarua and watch captivated as performers twirl their hips and sing in line with local traditions.

Since the island is so small, you can circumnavigate it in less than an hour - but stretch it out and enjoy beach by beach, scene by scene. Hop on a bike or brave a scooter and drive yourself.

The allure of the Cook Islands brings visitors back again and again, so be sure to book your holiday early to avoid missing out.

When you reach the southern side of the island, be sure to take a dirtbike inroad to get to Wigmore’s Waterfall. If you’re cycling, this sparkling cascade and deep, cool pool offers a chance to escape the heat.

A MELTING POT OF POSSIBILITY

Once you arrive in Rarotonga, you’ll soon find that you are on ‘island time.’ Locals let life unfold at its own pace without hurry, so get into the tropical cadence with a lazy stroll along the beach before you head out to explore the island’s many attractions.

Organised tour groups can also lead you through the exotic jungle on a quad bike or out on a guided mountain trek. The island is naturally abundant with marine activities too. Snorkelling, scuba diving, reef cruises, fishing

- Fun, food and friendly locals make this a cruise not to be missed! Enjoy this fun-filled tour which carries you on a journey around calm and tranquil lagoon waters aboard a glass bottom boat. Experience, up close and personal, the marine life of Muri Beach and lagoon as you snorkel and swim amongst the tropical fish before enjoying a mouth-watering barbeque fish lunch on Koromiri Island. Shrug off those inhibitions and partake in a few local traditions such as pareu tying and enjoy the cultural entertainment on offer.

W H EN TO GO • Tropically warm throughout the year, an ideal time to travel is the dry season (May-Oct) as it’s less humid and slightly cooler with temperatures ranging 2427°C. • Book at least 3 months out from your travel date to avoid disappointment as airline seats and accommodation sell out quickly.

Don your very own pareu (sarong), walk away with a handmade quilt or black pearl and feast upon tropical fruit. Enjoy the friendly, lively atmosphere abuzz with chatter and song. Make sure that you try the traditional island-style feast called an umukai. You’ll devour delectable meats and vegetables wrapped in banana leaves and cooked in a shallow pit by hot volcanic rock.

BEYOND PARADISE - THE OUTER ISLANDS

Rarotonga isn’t the only tropical haven worth a visit, and fortunately it’s close to a smorgasbord of other beautiful surrounding islands. Aitutaki is one such place. An untouched paradise that is less frequented by boisterous travellers, here you can find a truly authentic Cook Islands experience. It’s known as a honeymoon hotspot because couples love to come here to get away from it all. Empty expanses of bright white sand and azure waters await you, ready for swimming, snorkelling or sunbathing.

The pulse of the island starts racing when the sun goes down, head to Avarua town to the Whatever Bar & Grill or Trader Jack’s where the party really begins.

SAMOA - an untouched paradise

There’s truly nowhere quite like Samoa. From the moment you arrive on this idyllic nation’s shores, you will be greeted by smiles and the lively ‘Talofa’ of locals, who are ready to treat you like a treasured friend.

T

he colourful culture and welcoming attitude is not all you’ll find here - Samoa is packed with natural delights like glistening turquoise lagoons, towering volcanic landscapes, blissful beaches and banyan groves, all of which offer once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for adventure or relaxation - whichever holiday type suits you. There are ten islands that make up Samoa, with Upolu (home to Apia, the nation’s capital) and Savai’i as the main two. Each island has its own unique flavour and feel - though all are equally delectable. Unlike some other crowded Pacific destinations, Samoa very much retains its untouched, pastoral atmosphere - which Samoan secret will you uncover?

Another special and important part of Fa’a Samoa - 'the Samoan way' - are the traditions. Check out the song and dance such as the siva afi and taualuga at a unique cultural show for visitors. You’ll leave enchanted by the skill, grace and passion evident in the various dances, ranging from slow and captivating to thrilling and fast. The fabulous flavour of Samoa is most apparent in its cuisine. Food is all a part of coming together, so you may find yourself invited to a mouth-watering traditional feast called an ‘umu’. Translated to ‘earth oven’, this ritual gives you an idea of how fresh and homemade the food is - it’s cooked outside with hot rocks!

There’s a different type of accommodation to suit every need in Samoa. For one, it’s the only place in the Pacific where you can really live like a local in a beach fale amid some million dollar scenery. That means you get to sleep right on the beach under a thatched roof on wooden posts, and let the gentle lapping of waves lull you to sleep.

Samoa also has multiple luxurious lodgings if you prefer a beachside resort complete with air con. INSPIRING ACTIVITIES AND EXPERIENCES

All year round the breeze and ocean are delightfully warm, so you can always soak up the sun on the beach. Head to Satoalepai Village on Savai’i to swim with sea turtles, or set off to Aganoa Beach on the west coast for some of the most epic breaks in the Pacific. Hiring snorkel gear is a must - beneath the water’s surface at almost every beach across the archipelago there’s a glittering rainbow of tropical fish to admire.

The adventure doesn’t stop with Samoa’s natural attractions. Come in September and take part in parades and cultural showcasing for the Teuila Festival, the annual celebration of Samoan culture including the crowning of Miss Samoa. The Alo Paopao Festival, which takes place at the same time, celebrates outrigging and the culture’s boating history. Party on a boat, on the beach and on the pub crawl bus as you enjoy the sweet island beats of international and local entertainers.

When you’ve had enough of the sand and surf, head out for a walk through the rainforest and discover some awe-inspiring caves, pools and waterfalls. You can even hire a car or bike to take in more of the scenery - and find more photo opportunities!

TATTOO

The Samoan tatau (tattoo) is very unique, with the traditional method of application still intact in order to keep its integrity and traditions alive. The traditional men’s tatau is the Pe’a and the traditional woman’s is the malu. The patterns and structure of the Pe’a goes beyond aesthetics – it’s a sign of bravery and more importantly a sign of service. Samoan sleeves and arm band tattoos have really taken off in New Zealand and worldwide, with Samoans displaying pride in their nation as well as sports stars like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Sonny Bill Williams leading the charge. The intricate cultural motifs typically replicate the family, journey, culture and ancestors of the person being tattooed – works of art that are unique to each individual.

The name says it all! This NEW resort has a dream-like setting by a famous beach and coral lagoon - a location chosen many years ago for the romantic film ‘Return to Paradise’ starring legendary Gary Cooper. Here you will experience true tropical heaven.

Culture and tradition also flourishes in Tanna. Many of its villages shy away from modern life and instead live as true to their ancestors as they can. Drop in on a village and see the ancient culture in action, with colourful ceremonies and community-focused values.

You can also enjoy a taste of Vanuatu’s colonial past - there is a myriad of French delicacies around every corner. Don’t forget to try the national dish, laplap, a root vegetable cake. It’s best enjoyed with a Tusker beer.

THE CHARMING AND SUMPTUOUS ISLAND OF SANTO

Efate is home to Vanuatu’s delectable capital, Port Vila. Most visitors fly straight into this seaside town, the perfect starting point for your holiday.

For a souvenir or two, saunter to the markets to strike a bargain with the charming local sellers. Open around the clock from Monday 7am until Saturday midday, the shopping never ends! Only a short drive out of town, the Blue Lagoon is a must-see. Swim in its vivid blue waters or even jump in off a swing rope. Guided buggy tours can also help you explore untouched areas - the revving engines offer plenty of speed and excitement! Get your fill of fascinating culture with a visit to Eskasup Village. Here you’ll be treated to ‘kastom’ dancing with eye-catching costumes where locals will tell stories and show you aspects of their traditional lifestyle.

THE EXPLOSIVE AND TANTALISING TANNA

The island of Tanna is a mecca for coffee lovers - it grows some of the world’s best bitter beans. What’s really extraordinary about Tanna is Mt Yasur. This is an active volcano, so here you’ll see red and orange bursts of molten lava spouting

Santo, with its perfect palms, twinkling sands and gorgeous cerulean waters, has been the inspiration for novels, sweeping musical odysseys and romance, such as James Michener’s “Tales of the South Pacific”. It will enchant your senses and captivate your spirit. Champagne Beach is one of the island’s highlights. Promenade along its silver sands or dip in its glistening sapphire waters, then take a walk through the vibrant rainforest where tropical birds provide the soundtrack to your adventure. Want to dive into some history? Sink into the depths and explore the wreck of the US President Coolidge luxury liner, which sank in 1942 after hitting a mine. Nearby, float around the Million Dollar Point, where American forces dumped their surplus equipment after World War II ended. Vanuatu is simply a natural and cultural splendour. Indulge all your senses in a trip to this picturesque retreat. As soon as you get a taste of its balmy breeze and warm, welcoming waters you definitely won’t want to leave.

W H EN TO GO • The climate varies from tropical in the north to subtropical in the south, with dry rain-shadow areas in between. • The best time to travel is Apr-Dec when temperatures range from 1828°C, this is Vanuatu at its glorious best - sparkling days and pleasantly cool evenings. Light weight casual clothing and a sweater is usually sufficient.
