Hello!

Do you suffer from the one-day mentality? The ‘Oh, one day I’d like to see that’ speech, but it never takes formation? Well, we’re changing all that. From the one-day to the right-now, we’re making dreams happen. From the torched savannah landscape of an African safari to metre-deep powder on the slopes of Japan, an adventure exists at every terrain. Seven continents all vying for your attention, Asia entices with its quiet yet lethal powers of attraction while South America seduces with a beauty so blatant it almost makes you blush. And then there’s Turkey. Oh Turkey, you had us at the arrival gate. Stop wishing and wanting, start doing and living! For as long as the world exists, so does adventure!

WALKS of the WORLD MT KILIMANJARO

- Tanzania

Coloured flags mark the summit, but it’s your weary legs and raspy breath that mark the head-spinning altitude. As Africa’s highest mountain and the world's highest free-standing mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro kisses the roof of the sky. You can trek this beast over the course of one week and you’ll need a good level of fitness and an unwavering determination to succeed. The terrain is steep with pathways weaving between boulders and overhangs; the route, in parts, scaled by slopes of shale. Your efforts will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramas of craters, ice-fields and distant Kenyan plains. For altitude sickness, drink steaming ginger tea, a welcome sight before a pre-dawn tramp, when frozen volcanic dusk makes the mountain easier to climb. And then at 19,340ft you arrive at Uhuru Peak – Kilimanjaro’s highest point. You’ve made it. The feeling is beyond euphoric. Machame Route ) 8 days/7 nights

MACHU PICCHU

Entering the Inca sun gate at the very moment sun emerges from behind the Andes is not only spine-tingling, it also makes the 4-day hard slog undoubtedly worth it. A land that time forgot, the 550-year old citadel surrenders to a warm orange glow. You’ll have spent the past 43km with pinching thigh muscles as you traverse misty mountains, humid forests and craggy pathways, but you’ll also have spent it amidst sacred Incan history, camping nightly and rising before the clouds clear. Acclimatising to Machu Picchu’s 14,000 feet is key, so spend an additional few days in Cuzco – chewing on Coca leaves to ease any altitude sickness. Each year there are a restricted number of visas – make sure you book in advance. This is a physically exerting trek on tough terrain, but the rewards are truly monumental. SAPA HILL TRIBE TREK

- Vietnam

With dream scenery plucked straight from a fantasy, the deep terraces that tumble down Sapa’s lush hillside are neatly packed with rice paddies and an obligatory mystical fog. Having arrived on an eight-hour train from Hanoi, this is where hikers embark on one of Sapa’s many hilltribe treks. For the adventurer who endeavours to combine hiking with culture, the relatively easy five-day itinerary includes one night in Sapa and one night with a local tribe family. By day you’ll traverse gravel tracks and muddy trails, flanked on all sides by lush highland, grazing buffalo and many of Vietnam’s 53 minority groups that inhabit the landscape. You’ll immerse yourself in traditional village life, learning about Vietnam’s many diverse cultures and participating in their daily rituals. - Italy

Sure, you can explore the Amalfi coastline by Ferrari or Vespa, but wheels don’t build your buns into steel. A self-guided Amalfi walking tour will do that. For the physically fit you’ll walk up to five hours per day, in the beaming Italian sun, exploring 40km of dramatic coastline that’ll take you through granite cliffs and twisting paths; plunging hillside and zig-zagging mountain steps. Look out for basking lizards, discrete shrines and valley hidden villages, as well as time-worn convents and tiny pebbled beaches with pontoons. WORK HARD,play hard GORILLA TREK, UGANDA "A Gorilla Trek in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in an unforgettable experience. I felt safe with the guides, the scenery was magical and nothing prepared me for seeing apes in their natural habitat. The first day ’s trek started early. After a briefing, we took to the trails in a small group of seven. The distance depends on which gorilla family you visit and you’ll need a good degree of fitness. I opted for the largest family. Luck was on my side, we found mums feeding their young and a huge silverback. I loved the family interaction. The juveniles were teenage-like, rolling down hills and making chase, it was exciting to watch." – Jenny Nilsson, House of Travel Hastings

TURKEY "We landed in Istanbul and it was straight to the Grand Bazaar and then the Blue Mosque. The non-stop exploration made us ravenous so we feasted on delicious pides (Turkish pizza). Next our trip took us to Bodrum with visits to Ephesus, Gallipoli and Pammukale. Pammukale is a massive white wonderland sounded by calcium cliffs. Swim in the natural pools while soaking up its sheer natural beauty. Savvy travellers should go just before high season, when you’ll enjoy less crowds and better temperatures. Book a tour because distances between places are deceiving and it can be tricky trying to organise transport yourself. Remember to cover your shoulders when visiting mosques and never EVER leave Turkey without trying the yummy apple tea!" – Crystal Byrne, House of Travel Takapuna

ECUADOR & GALAPAGOS ISLANDS "Like so many people Galapagos was on our lifetime wish-list and in April my wife and I and our two daughters had the unique opportunity to explore these amazing islands. Words and pictures cannot describe the incredible experience. From swimming with penguins, turtles and hammerhead sharks to visiting the moon-like terrain of some of the islands, the Galapagos failed to disappoint – and that's without even mentioning the sea lions, frigates and blue footed boobies! In my opinion a trip to Galapagos without going to Quito and standing at the middle of the world (Quito is on the Equator line with a 0° latitude) would only be half the journey. Laughter, learning to live without technology and meeting amazing people, it was a remarkable family holiday that we will never forget. We’ll be back, that’s for sure!" – Mark O’Donnell, House of Travel CEO

OUR HOTTIES LOVE GETTING THEIR FEET STUCK INTO AN ADVENTURE. ANY EXCUSE TO EXPLORE! CHECK OUT SOME OF OUR GALLANT GETAWAYS.

MACHU PICCHU, PERU "Machu Picchu was on my 'bucket list'. It was more than I imagined. I was lucky enough to be in the Sanctuary hotel right next to the ruins and I spent time inside before and after the day visitors. Exploring the ruins for hours and imagining the ancient civilisation of the Inca’s living on the very spot I was standing gave me goose bumps. Cuzco and the Sacred Valley are not to be rushed, acclimatise properly. After you have been on your guided tour, my tip is to just get lost in the small back streets. Oh and be sure to try a delicious Pisco Sour cocktail!" – Christine Wynne-Jones, House of Travel Remuera

NAMIBIA & BOTSWANA "We enjoyed an amazing self-drive family holiday across Namibia and Botswana, followed by Victoria Falls and two lodges in the Okavango. Self-drive was very easy and hassle free. We pre-booked every night, so we had the comfort of knowing exactly where we’d be each night. We stayed in amazing lodges and ate beautiful gourmet cuisine. We also spent two nights in the desert at Soussevlei, which included a desert tour. Running down the sand dunes flat-out was an absolute blast! Highlights in Etosha National Park included a bull elephant and we also saw a herd of giraffe. The guides were great at tracking the elusive cats and our guide was determined to find us a leopard before we left!" – Beth Yates, House of Travel Christchurch

VIETNAM "Vietnam is one of my favourite places in South East Asia! The trip started in Hoi An, a gorgeous old town located close to the beaches at DaNang. This is the best place to get clothing made for super cheap. A must do is the Red Bridge cooking school and half day bike tour which includes a visit to a working crop farm where you get to sample and watch a cooking demonstration using fresh farm produce. Next on the trip was Ho Chi Minh City, you can’t miss a day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels, war museums, a rickshaw ride and a dinner cruise on the Saigon River." – Sarah O’Callaghan, House of Travel Hornby

EMPTY-NESTERS I N TH E USA

YO UNG GO-GET T ERS IN JAPAN

The most family-friendly sport of the lot. Kids love to ski because the snow’s soft and the gondolas soar, while parents get to perfect their bowls, glades and cliff chutes. In Canada, there are two key ski states; British Columbia and Alberta. Both regions provide a huge playground of diversity, from vast slopes to gentle grooms, designated beginner’s areas, off piste, tree runs and exhilarating heli-ski drops. There’s something to suit all abilities. In addition, both BC and Alberta offer an abundance of snowfall, there are no closed days and because the Canadians are kings at building practical ski resorts, queues are unlikely. That’ll curb any impending tantrums. From dad! When the kids tire of skiing, take them snowmobiling, snowshoeing, dog sledding or zip lining, the opportunities are endless. And if you’re wary of the long haul, add on a stopover in Vancouver, LA or San Francisco; three cities to enthral them all.

It’s difficult to know what you’ll find the most superior on a USA ski holiday – the scenery, the service or the snow. From California, Wyoming, Utah to Colorado, you’ll discover plenty of diverse views, from lakes and cowboy ranches, to mining towns and pistes skimming a casino mecca. Even the Spring Mountains outside Las Vegas offer an immaculate ski terrain. Frequent snow dumps and light, dry powder are trademark attributes of US snow, with an average ten metres of powder per season. With resorts that are as charming off-piste as they are on, snow services are efficient and faultless, with tours run by hosts that often finish with a mug of steaming hot chocolate. Yum! Not to be out-done by European rivals, the après ski scene is also alive and kicking, from dog sledding to cat skiing and the obligatory night cap

With three-quarters of the country lending itself to mountain, Japan’s a haven for the avid skier or snowboarder. Boasting some of the most reliable and heaviest snowfall in the world, resorts are rich in thick, metre-deep powder. As the better-known Japanese resort, Niseko enjoys an enviable 16 metres of snow per year, but with over 500 resorts dotting the map, there’s light powder to be found all-over, as well as a relatively low-lying landscape which will thankfully keep the altitude sickness at bay. A popular choice for the international jet-set, Japan is one of the closest ski destinations you can get to in the northern hemisphere. Partner your trip with a stopover in Tokyo, Osaka or Kyoto. Once there, experience a Japanese style of ski culture. Eat your weight in freshly cooked tempura and switch your après ski from a lively all-nighter to an Onsen hot spring bath.
