General Information Accommodation Ratings To assist with the selection of your Pacific Islands accommodation we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. These are personal ratings offered by our people from their own experience and should therefore be used as a guide only. These ratings may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. Norfolk Island ratings however are based on the official Australian AAA Star Rating Scheme, and therefore the rating descriptions below do not apply to the Norfolk Island section. Standard rooms, clean and comfortable usually with basic furnishings and private en suites. Typically most properties would include a restaurant and bar but have a limited range of other guest facilities and services. Moderate accommodation with a reasonable range of room facilities and comfortable standard, usually with a wide range of recreational and leisure activities available for guest enjoyment. Superior accommodation offering a high level of comfort in rooms with quality furnishings and fixtures. First class accommodation offering the very best quality services with detailed focus on high customer satisfaction. There tends to be greater attention to personalised service and a strong focus on the quality of food and beverages. A half star is noted when the level of service and facilities falls between two grades. Grading accommodation can be quite subjective and generally speaking the standard and services will be in line with the price paid. Please check with your travel consultant to ensure you get the accommodation that best fits your needs. Price Indicator: The price indicator is provided as a guide only. The actual price may differ to that indicated in this brochure due to currency fluctuations, special events or peak periods. Your travel consultant will quote you the actual price at time of booking. Pricing is based in New Zealand dollars. Child Policy: Please note bedding configuration varies between properties and in some cases with different room types within a property. Some hotels also offer family bonuses and specials. Your travel consultant will help you choose the hotel to best suit you and your family’s needs. Look out for our “gems” of information scattered throughout our Pacific Islands brochure.

6 TIPS for your

Pac ific Islands Holiday

Wine & Dine in Noumea

Outer islands of New Caledonia

Explore the island of Niue

There’s no need to travel to France to experience authentic French cuisine, not when New Caledonia is on the doorstep. Noumea, the capital, is replete with French delicacies - simply step away from your hotel and find an endless array of culinary sensations. From the Escoffier cooking school to roadside food trucks called ‘roulottes’, this is a gourmet city.

Focusing on all that is perfect, Ile des Pins is a 20 minute flight from Noumea and your ticket to an untouched paradise. This is where crystal clear lagoons meet platinum white sand and exotic palm trees stand aside towering pine trees. Rent a bike and explore this tiny island at leisure.

Niue is a fantastic destination for getting out and about, whether that’s on land or under the sea. With extensive walking tracks that weave in and around the island, you can easily explore the terrain on foot.

A picnic in the park or on the beach is only half the fun; stopping en route at Municipal Market in Port Moselle is a pleasure in itself. Purchase just baked baguettes and wedges of cheese, and if you’re feeling adventurous, la confiture de banane – vanilla infused banana jam, it’s an island speciality. Head out of the city centre and find restaurants along the beaches of Anse Vata or Baie des Citrons.

2

For a cultural fix, the Loyalty Islands boast three unique islands that cater for visitors: Ouvéa, Lifou and Maré Island. Offering village stays, fishing trips, sculptors, weavers and friendly Kanak locals, it’s believed the Loyalty Islands were named after its inhabitants, for their obvious friendliness. Make sure you take cash and enough snacks to keep you sustained, each island only has one ATM and a limited amount of food stores.

Caves, chasms, tunnels and sink holes also litter the landscape. Anapala chasm is found at the bottom of a formidable 155 steps, while Matapa chasm provides sheltered swimming and Palaha is famed for its limestone formations and small snorkelling pools. If you want to get under the water, Niue always impresses divers with its clarity and up to 80 metres of visibility. Get in and swim with dolphins and sea turtles or for something more sedate, golf courses and fishing excursions are readily available across the island.

The islands of Ha’apai & Vava’u

Norfolk Island for History Buffs

Immerse Yourself in Pacific Culture

Tonga’s Vava’u Island has everything you want from a tropical hideout; emerald lagoons, champagne sand and beautiful blue water. Enjoy the island’s shimmering coastline, and get in the sea for surfing, diving and swimming with whales. Gentle Humpbacks frequent the warm waters between July and October. It’s also known as a yachting playground, so sit back and admire the luxury vessels slicing their way through the waves.

Throw away the smart phones and step back in time – Norfolk Island is history come to life. As one of Captain Cook’s many discoveries, the island was first sighted on 29 February 1774. Named after the Duchess of Norfolk, Cook promptly claimed the land as British. From convict settlements and bounty mutineers to WWII airbases, Norfolk has played an important role over the centuries.

Albeit different, cultural traditions across all the Pacific Islands have a certain fluidity that connects them all. Notably, the islands have a strong connection to art, craft and celebration.

For total isolation, Tonga’s Ha’apai group of islands will be more your bag. With reefs, white beaches, one or two volcanoes and not much else, it’s impossible not to relax here. Climb onboard a kayak and start paddling, stopping along the way for a picnic lunch on a deserted island. This is what the word ‘perfection’ was coined for.

Discover more at the Norfolk Island Museum, with its rich collection of exhibitions, restored houses and fascinating artefacts. Or watch descendants of the mutineers bring the famed ‘Mutiny on the Bounty’ story to life with an outdoor show performed in an amphitheatre.

In New Caledonia storytelling retains its importance for the exchange of myths and legend from one generation to the next, whereas in Niue, annual village festivals unite the community and provide the perfect excuse for dance, food, sport and art. Norfolk Island is renowned for its woodturning, which visitors are welcome to watch, and in Tonga, authentic culture abounds. From Sunday church to ceremonial kava drinking, little has changed here. The customs are resolutely traditional and modernity has yet to make much of an impact.

Experience Holidays The Pacific islands have diverse landscapes, pristine beaches and aquatic playgrounds aligned with a range of accommodation throughout the nation. There’s no doubt we can tailor your tropical getaway to suit your needs and wants. From foodie packages in Noumea, sea kayak adventures in Tonga, whale encounters in Niue and history excursions in Norfolk, we can create experience holidays just for you.

Calling all History Lovers Norfolk Island Norfolk Island was selected as an ideal penal colony thanks to its remoteness and economic potential. The first settlers arrived in 1788 and set about building a gaol and other town facilities. The gaol and several other buildings remain today and are often said to be the best examples of all Australia’s convict sites, so much so that it has won UNESCO World Heritage status. Kingston, situated on Slaughter Bay, is the island’s main town. Many of its buildings have been restored and now house museums and galleries documenting Norfolk Island’s storied past. A couple of history tours to take the fancy are Mutiny on the Bounty where you’ll see descendants of the mutineers bring their story and historic events to life in a 1.5 hour show performed in an outdoor amphitheatre or Night as a Convict where you can dress as a convict and join in with the Commandment for an evening of gaiety, feasting, singing and dancing. This is the most popular feature dinner on Norfolk Island and comes recommended and is fun for all ages. Package Inclusions: 7 nights accommodation in a One Bedroom at Aloha Apartments including return airport transfers and a half day island tour, a Mutiny on the Bounty Show tour and Night as a convict tour.

Soft Adventure Swim with whales in Niue The first thing you need to know about humpback whales is not that they’re huge, but that they love to sing. Being up to 15 metres in length and weighing between 25 and 40 tons, they can certainly belt out a melody. Actually, it’s more like an anthem. On any whale diving excursion this is one way you’ll know if there’s a giant in the vicinity, because when a whale bursts into song, such is the magnitude of their voice, your lungs will rattle in your chest. In Niue, the whale season runs from July to October, with August and September offering the best opportunity to interact with one of the world’s largest mammals. With water visibility as clear as it is, swimming amongst these majestic behemoths offers a clarity you won’t find elsewhere. There are rules to ensure swimmers stay at least 200 metres away, but humpbacks are curious by nature, so if you get lucky and they approach of their own accord, revel in the experience and enjoy their titanic presence. Package Inclusions: 4 nights accommodation in an Ocean Room at Scenic Matavai Resort including return airport transfers, daily tropical continental breakfast for two & 60 minutes free Wifi per day. Whale Trip including snorkel gear, a short wetsuit, water, refreshments & hydrophone to listen to the whale songs while onboard

Lifou, Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia

Venture off the Beaten Track Sea Kayaking in Tonga The lush tropical islands of Vava’u and Ha’apai are home to Friendly Islands Kayak Company. Whilst the islands are separated by reefs or open water, they are not great paddling distances apart so there’s plenty of time to kayak the warm waters, snorkel amidst colourful coral and inside legendary marine caves, and observe the traditional way of life of the Tongan people. Your most difficult choice will be deciding on which kayak tour to do. Vava’u’s hilly terrain is perhaps more interesting and scenic and it’s relatively sheltered waters are conducive to more reliable whale sightings between July and October. However if it’s white sand beaches you’re after, there’s no shortage of these in Ha’apai. Snorkelling’s superb in both island groups, but soft corals and sizeable fish are more abundant in Ha’apai waters. There are a range of itinerary’s available including 3, 5, 6, 8 and 10 days for Vava’u or 7 and 11 days for Ha’apai with various departure dates throughout the year, so you’re sure to find something to suit. Package Inclusions: A 45 minute orientation talk, 3 day Vava’u guided kayak tour, snacks and all meals included on the kayaking days, camping equipment including tents and mattresses, quality double and single fibreglass kayaks and accessories Price Guide From: $895

Noumea for Foodies Flavours and more on this Gourmet tour Seen as the French first claimed New Caledonia in 1853 - bringing their well-known affliction for fine wine and food with them - it’s little wonder the island features some of the most tantalising cuisine in the South Pacific. From the abundant seafood which includes anything from freshly-caught lobster to enormous shrimp and mangrove oysters, to the numerous root vegetables and fresh coconuts, the island is rich in culinary resources. Try something from each of the various snack bars and street stalls. Go crazy and ask for Civet de Rousette AKA bat stew; a New Caledonia specialty. The Gourmet tour is a great way to taste what Noumea has on offer. It includes a stop at the colourful markets, a sweet treat at one of Noumea’s famous chocolate shops, a savoury at a French bakery and a visit to one of the main Supermache’s. Give in to the temptation of delicious French delights, you know you want to.

Niue is one of the world’s largest raised coral atolls and is home to around 1600 hospitable residents. There’s no such word as rush-hour on Niue, it’s one of the world’s safest destinations and you don’t need foreign exchange – Niue uses the Kiwi dollar. What many people don’t know is that Niue is far from tiny – it’s over four times the size of Rarotonga. A quarter of the island is clothed in pristine rainforest and almost the entire island is surrounded by 20 to 30 metre cliffs, and dramatic beautiful chasms and coves provide perfect swimming spots. Niue is also honeycombed with some of the South Pacific’s most spectacular and extensive caves. The island is encircled by a 64 kilometre coastal road so bikes are a great way to get around, although you can also hire a car. Diving and snorkelling around Niue’s coast is renowned for its water clarity and the richness of its marine life. Swimming with humpback whales (in season) is unforgettable and thanks to Niue’s deep surrounding waters, you can sip a cocktail and marvel at these awesome giants breaching just 50 metres from shore.

Instead of silver sands, you’ll find sea caves, rainforest and mysterious chasms, and a world that centres around the ocean. In fact, ‘Matavai’ means eye on the water (mata - eye, vai - water), and it’s an appropriate name for this wonderful clifftop resort with its sweeping Pacific panorama. Scenic Matavai Resort Niue comprises three properties and has a wide range of room types on offer.

Deluxe Room

Both the 3-star studio apartments and the villa are located a 5 minute drive away from the main resort itself. The studios offer good value for money with magnificent ocean views. There are five duplex units, each divided into two spacious studios. Large private balconies make the most of the views and all rooms are well equipped with a kitchen for self-catering. Other on-site facilities include a freshwater swimming pool, trampoline, a BBQ area and access to a sea-track. The villa is situated adjacent to the studios and this super spacious home away from home offers all sorts of holiday options for families or groups. Niue Orientation Tour

Misa’s Nature Tour

A not to be missed tour for an introduction to Niue for the first-time traveller or, even if you’re a repeat visitor, you’ll learn from a knowledgeable guide, a little of the history, the culture and see some of Niue’s iconic locations all in the comfort of an air conditioned mini bus.

Misa’s Nature Tour is an interactive experience where he guides you along a path that will showcase many unique features of Niuean history, customs and practices, many of which are still relevant today. His stories will entertain you and his knowledge about nature will leave you with an appreciation of how fragile it is on Niue island.

Uga Tour

Go Fishing Niue’s legendary among fishermen and is one of the best kept fishing possie secrets left in the world. Its distance from any other major land-mass, the wide range of in-shore fish and clear waters combine to attract the ‘big ones’ that fishermen dream of. Big fish like wahoo, tuna and marlin are often caught and the deep waters hide all sorts of surprises.

The uga or coconut crab is said to be the largest hermit crab in the world. While it spends all its adult life on land, it must return to the sea to release its eggs. The tour provides an opportunity to see and capture the uga in its natural habitat. The tour is in two parts – the first is to lay the bait during daylight hours. The second part takes place at night when the crab comes out to feed on the bait.

Snorkelling Adventures

© Niue Tourism

Niue is renowned for its crystal clear water and richness of its marine life, so snorkelling around its coast is a must do! Enjoy an abundance of reef fish and beautiful hard corals. If you are lucky you may even come across the resident spinner dolphins – famous for their acrobatic displays. They are playful by nature and you may just get to enjoy an in-water interaction with them.

beautiful islands, divided into four groups, are scattered like pearls across 700,000 square kilometres of ocean. There is no shortage of deserted beaches and pristine anchorages here, and the swimming, snorkelling and diving are exceptional. The main island, Tongatapu, is home to the capital Nuku’alofa, and to most of the kingdom’s resorts. Many of these are familyowned and personal, because Tonga likes to welcome its visitors in low-key style - this is a place for simpler living and genuine encounters with the local people. With about a third of all Tonga’s population living here, Nuku’alofa can be a surprisingly bustling place but its size also means there’s a great array of restaurants, nightclubs and dynamic cultural shows. There’s plenty to see too, such as the Talamahu Markets with its mounds of fresh produce and selection of handcrafts, including wood carving and jewellery. Although the Royal Palace is not open to visitors, you can admire this white-timber 19th century building from the waterfront. Try to time your visit to town to include a Sunday. Tongans are ardent churchgoers and their singing is legendary. Everyone’s welcome but make sure to pack your Sunday best.

It’s perfectly positioned at the tip of Tongatapu by two stunning beaches, Ha’atafu and Kanokupolu, where the water is as clear as glass. And, as you would expect, life here revolves around the beach; spend your days swimming, kayaking, sunbathing or dozing under a palm tree. Your accommodation will be in a traditional style fale, with a ceiling fan and insect screens on the windows.

Ocean View Fale

Liku’alofa Beach Resort is situated on the west coast of Tongatapu, fringed with palm trees, surrounded by lush tropical gardens and sits along a stretch of white sandy beach. It’s a 35 minute drive from Fua’amotu International Airport, so you’ll be unpacked and relaxing ‘Tongan style’ in no time. If you’d rather keep busy, check out the snorkelling and kayaking, enjoy a leisurely cycle, discover the island paradise of Fafa or Pangaimotu, take a full island tour or swim with the whales from July-October. Stay on a Wednesday or Friday night for the hotel’s legendary Island Night.

They are stylishly furnished, and in true Tongan style have high, cathedral ceilings, thatched walls, big coconut beams and poles and wooden shingle roofs. Swim with Humpback Whales

From July to October Humpback Whales travel up from Antarctica to Tonga to enjoy the warmer waters. There’s an array of interesting behaviour to be seen from the boat from graceful spyhops, powerful tail slaps and full body breaching or curious approaches to the boat. This can be a life changing experience, one that few people will ever get the chance to enjoy. Thrill-seekers can get into the water, up close and personal with these beautiful creatures.

Sailing in Vava’u Tonga’s protected coral reefs, atolls and safe anchorages make it one of the best locations for sailing and Neiafu Harbour on Vava’u is one of the Pacific’s key sailing hubs. The Moorings and Sunsail are part of the largest skippered charter boat operations in the world. They operate 20 yachts, all modern, fully equipped and spacious with well trained staff onboard to ensure a fantastic sailing holiday.

Scuba Diving in Ha’apai

The island is just a 10 minute boat ride from Tongatapu so you’ll be off the boat and in the water in record time. A tasty lunch at Big Mama’s Yacht Club is included.

Board your dive boat and head out to one of the dozens of nearby reef systems which offer some of the South Pacific’s most unspoiled and rarely visited dive experiences. Regular sightings of sharks, tuna and manta rays are common as you meander through the soft coral gardens. A full range of dive courses are on offer from one day dive experiences for the non-qualified diver right up to the full open water courses.

Nuku’alofa City Tour This fun walking tour is a great way to familiarise yourself with the kingdom’s capital, Nuku’alofa. Visit the Langafonua Handicrafts Centre which has the best range of traditional Tongan handicrafts and fine arts including tapa cloth, jewellery and wooden carvings.

Norfolk Island This delightfully unique destination will take you by surprise. Rich in history and breathtakingly beautiful, Norfolk Island is as enchanting as its locals who have lived on this tiny island for generations, many of whom are descendants of famous Bounty Mutineers. You’ll find it hard to believe, as you drive down country roads or walk through soaring trees at the national park, that this could ever have been the setting for the site of two penal colonies. If you’re after excitement, you can go kayaking, mountain biking, big game fishing or horse trekking. The subtropical temperature is the icing on the cake: average maximums range from 18˚C in winter to 24˚C in summer. Despite its compact size, Norfolk Island is the ‘Bounteous Isle’ in every way – just awaiting your exploration and discovery.

Gorgeous is the word for Governor’s Lodge, this place is a stand-out. This boutique property offers two One Bedroom Villas, a Two Bedroom Villa, and the two storey, Three Bedroom Villa, which can sleep up to six. All are self-contained, attractively decorated, spacious and very comfortable, and each has its own BBQ for outdoor dining. Wonderland by Night

Nightfall at Kingston brings a different mood to the convict settlement. The stillness and the stars are there just as they were before mankind arrived in 1788, until the mood is broken and you experience the horrifying decades of Norfolk Island’s convict era in a theatrical show.

With ten acres of magical pines and bushland lit up like an enchanted forest you’ll feel like you’ve entered a magical wonderland. Meander along (or ride in the ‘moon buggy’) a gentle winding path with Archie, a descendant of the Bounty Mutineers as he recites his poems.
