General Information Accommodation Ratings To assist with the selection of your accommodation we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. These are personal ratings offered by our people from their own experience and should therefore be used as a guide only. These ratings may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. Moderate accommodation with a reasonable range of rooms and facilities, with rooms furnished to a comfortable standard. Superior standard of accommodation with a wide range of rooms and facilities, and a higher standard of service. First Class accommodation with an excellent range of facilities and services. Accommodation in this rating is considered among the best in the country. A half star is noted when the level of service and facilities falls between two grades. Grading accommodation can be quite subjective and generally speaking the standard and services will be in line with the price paid. Please check with your Travel Consultant to ensure you get the accommodation that best fits your needs. Child Policy: Please note bedding configuration varies between properties and in some cases with different room types within a property. Some hotels also offer family bonuses and specials. Your Travel consultant will help you choose the hotel to best suit you and your family’s needs. Price Indicator: The price is provided as a guide only. The actual price may differ to that indicated in this brochure due to currency fluctuations, special events, trade shows or peak periods. Your travel consultant will quote you the actual price at the time of booking. Per person pricing is based in New Zealand dollars. 6 TIPS for your

Thailand Holiday

Keep calm & curry on

Bagging a bargain

A festival for all

From regionally diverse curries to bowls of street-side noodles, Thai cuisine makes every mealtime an indulgence, but the food’s akin with the temperature – hot!

First thing’s first – bartering, which is key to surviving Thailand’s chaotic market culture. Start by knocking 50% off the asking price and haggle from there.

Ease yourself in gently with Bangkok flavours; central Thailand is where you’ll find the sweeter Thai Green Curry, while Massaman is commonly referred to as the ‘training curry’ because it's so mild. When you're ready to add some heat, head north and order Kaeng Pa – Jungle Curry, this one boasts an almighty 60 chilies per serving!

Rod Fai Night Market is an open air-bazaar located in an abandoned railway station just behind Bangkok’s Seacon Square Shopping Mall. Selling eclectic keepsakes, it’s open from 5pm until midnight, Thursday to Sunday. Chatuchak Weekend Market is one of the world’s largest bazaars and there’s even a complimentary electric train to take you from one district to the next.

Thailand is a fantastic year-round destination for festivals. During Loi Krathong Lantern Festival which occurs in November and falls on the full moon, Thai people celebrate by floating beautiful lotus-shaped lanterns atop the water; the landscape erupting into an ocean of illumination.

For something extra special, visit The Sea Gypsy Village in Rawai, Phuket. With a sea-fronting row of vendors selling fresh seafood, and restaurants eager to prepare it. Simply purchase your fish and choose how you’d like it cooked.

2

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is the touristy canal market with longtail boats and ladies in bamboo hats, but for something similar and less crowded, Amphawa floating market is open every weekend from noon until evening, just 50 kilometres from Bangkok.

April marks the Thai New Year and the Buddhist festival of Songkran; the end of the dry season and the start of annual rains. To wash away their sins, entire cities take to the street for a colossal water fight. Then there’s Chiang Mai which flourishes in February due to its Chiang Mai Flower Festival, while Bo Sang Umbrella Fair is all about beautiful umbrellas. Explore the villages of Bo Sang and San Kamphaeng, watching local artisans paint intricate paper brollies.

Beachside bliss

Wellness & relaxation

Make a splash

Railay Beach flanks a small peninsula just south of Ao Nang. There’s an east and west Railay Beach but it’s west where you’ll stumble across a picture-perfect paradise. Accessible only by foot, there's champagne sand and tranquil water. Railay is also famed for its stellar rock climbing, with over 700 routes bolted into its cliff facades.

Massage and medicine is synonymous with Thai culture. Day spas and spa resorts litter the country and there are various temples that provide massage in its most authentic form.

The Splash Jungle water park will keep you cool on a balmy day. About an hour's drive from Patong, younger kids love the aqua-play swimming pool while the six-level wave pool and 335 metre 'lazy river' are great for all ages. You don’t need cash here because there are scannable wristbands.

The gently curving seabed at Hua Hin Beach makes it a safe option for swimmers, with jet skis and banana boats on the water, nearby mountain hiking and supervised horse trekking. Divers should make a beeline for Koh Tao in the Gulf of Siam. With both PADI and SSI courses available, Koh Tao qualifies thousands of certified open water divers every single year.

Wat Po in Bangkok offers ancient massage therapies in a communal open-plan pavilion, which is in-keeping with local culture. Traditional Thai massage doesn’t require the removal of clothes so ensure you’re wearing something loose-fitting. Beach masseuses can usually be found frequenting the beaches between November and April, especially on Patong Beach. And then there’s the Wellness Sanctuary and Holistic Spa, situated at the edge of a serene lagoon in Koh Samui. Switch off your smart phone and escape daily life. With detoxes, spa treatments and yoga programs, health is the primary focus here.

Phuket Aquarium has been wow-ing pint sized marine lovers since 1983. Visit at the weekend and catch the live shark feeding between 11am and 11.30am. Alternatively, hop into a giant plastic sphere (which can fit two people, so you can accompany your child) and enjoy a day of zorbing. This all-weather activity covers 190 metres of rolling hills which you’ll roll down within a plastic ball. Suitable for six year olds and up.

Experience

Bangkok

Shopping, temples, tuk-tuks and smiles, Bangkok is a city that pulses with chaos to give you a sensory overload. Vibrant and sprawling, it’s steamy and ritzy and glittery all at the same time with nowhere else in the world quite like it. Known to the locals as the ‘City of Angels’, Bangkok is a madcap mix of traditional Thai culture, merged with modern western framework of highrise buildings, motorways and shopping malls. Not to be missed sights include the enormous array of Wats (temples), with their glistening glass mosaics, gold statues and towering Buddhas. If you’re heading to Bangkok for the shopping, you’ll not be disappointed as markets and malls dot the city. A shopping highlight is Asiatique, located on the riverfront boasting 1500 boutiques and 40 restaurants and the prices are cheap cheap cheap! Whatever you plan to do, you will not be bored in Bangkok – that’s why this wonderful city has won the most visited city two years in a row. It’s a city not to be missed.

Bangkok Temples Tour Visit three of the most famous temples in Bangkok – the temple of the Golden Buddha, Wat Pho with its reclining Buddha and a magnificent monastery built out of white Italian marble. After the temples you’ll stop at a local jewellery and handicraft factory and showroom.

River Kwai Tour

Ayutthaya by River Cruise The former capital of Thailand, Ayutthaya, is home to many ancient ruins and artworks. Five dynasties have ruled this kingdom until it was destroyed by the Burmese. Picture many Buddha statues and beautiful gardens and you will come away with a true appreciation of Thai architecture.

6

Floating Markets & Sampran Riverside Visit an authentic floating market – ‘Damnoen Saduak’, where you will see locals selling everything you can imagine from their boats. The afternoon is full of Thai culture at the Sampran Riverside, where Thai villagers create traditional handicrafts.

Visit the famous bridge over the River Kwai. Stopping in the local town, you’ll visit the Allied War Cemeteries and museum before taking an hour train ride on the historic Death Railway. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before taking a long-tail boat ride along the Kwai Noi River.

Evening Tuk Tuk Food Tour Enjoy an evening of culinary delights in this exciting city. Jump on your private tuk tuk and whizz around Bangkok for a night of eating and adventure. Experience local street food, regional specialties and sweet surprises. Finish the night in Chinatown for some of Bangkok’s most famous street food.

Chinatown Bike and Boat Experience all of the wonders of Chinatown’s frenetic market environment and narrow alleyways by bicycle. See scenes of classical wooden-framed homes on stilts, mothers doing their daily washings, and kids splashing away the tropical heat as you cruise along the canals. Finish with a bike ride through Bangkok’s greenery, a pleasant surprise from this sprawling metropolis.

Street Food Tour Eat your way through Bangkok with a selection of street food tastings inspired by famous Chef Gordon Ramsey. Tantalise your taste buds with these must-try dishes and mouthwatering desserts including satay skewers, fish cakes, traditional rice noodles, banana fritters and the old favourite Pad Thai. Save some room for dessert because the banana fritters and mango sticky rice are not to be missed!

Evening Thai Boxing Match Muay Thai (also known as Thai boxing) is the national sport of Thailand and dates back to the 16th century. It is a full-contact martial art where two opponents battle using their fists, elbows, knees, shins and feet. Before fighting, the boxers perform a ritual called the wai kru ram muay to show respect and ask for protection. A must do in Bangkok, thrilling and entertaining to watch in person.

Royal Grand Palace & Bangkok Canals Take a tour of Bangkok’s canals (or klongs, as they are known locally) by boat. See the serene family homes and temples dotted along the waterways which inspired Bangkok’s reference as the “Venice of the East”. Stop at the Grand Palace complex including the Temple of the Emerald Buddha as well as the Temple of Dawn, or Wat Arun, which is one of Bangkok’s most iconic landmarks.

Hua Hin & Pattaya

Explore Hua Hin

Explore Pattaya

Conveniently located just 2.5 hours from Bangkok, the area is lined

Pattaya lies south east of Bangkok and is only a two hour drive away, a

with oceanfront resorts and offers a great escape from bustling Bangkok. Combining the attractions of a modern holiday destination with the charm and fascination of an active fishing port, this coastal town has been a favoured summer retreat for Thai royalty since the 1920s. Hua Hin boasts a deep crescent of platinum sand lapped by temperate waters, but there’s more than just beach to this mountain framed head-turner. With seas that are warm throughout the year, frequent dips and shoreline swims are a daily occurrence at Hua Hin. The seabed curves softly and safely so it’s ideal for pint-sized toe-dippers as well as less confident swimmers. For the more adventurous, be treated to jet skis and banana boats, nearby mountain hiking and if you like your transport to be of the hooved-variety, horse trekking is both great value and well supervised. If you’re still thirsty for an activity, kayak the local wetlands or travel 10 kilometres out of Hua Hin and tee off at Black Mountain Golf Course. 18-holes hide amidst Thai jungle and an old pineapple plantation. Because not all beach-goers are beach-goers, they’re golf-goers instead.

This is Thailand’s action-packed beach destination, with an array of sporting opportunities both on land and water including golfing, game fishing and scuba diving. Unless of course it’s rest and relaxation you crave, in which case there are beach chairs and umbrellas lining the Pattaya shore, where wandering vendors will cater to your every need: from barbequed shrimp to a foot massage. Pattaya is certainly a Thai beach resort that meets your every need. It’s hot and hectic in Pattaya and you won’t be short of choices in accommodation or dining options, with an excellent range of restaurants helped by a population that has a colourful mix of nationalities and ethnicities from near and far. Make sure you try some of Thailand’s freshest seafood at any of the many seafood restaurants.

either Phuket or Krabi. The Phi Phi Islands are one of the superstars of Thailand. Made world-famous with its stunningly beautiful bays and beaches featured in the movie 'The Beach'. Made up of six islands, including the most famous, Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh. The Phi Phi Islands conjure up images of white sand beaches, long-tail boats and a chilled vibe, and that’s exactly what you get. Koh Phi Phi Don, the only inhabited island of the six, offers a variety of destinations all within the one island. Central Phi Phi Don, located near Tonsai Bay (where the ferries will land) in the south, is the liveliest place and has plenty of hotels, restaurants and bars to keep you entertained. Laem Thong, located on the north eastern coast, is where you will find a long strip of beach perfect for sunbathing, snorkelling, scuba diving or simply doing nothing. Located at the eastern end of Tonsai Bay, Long Beach, is separated from Central Phi Phi Don by a narrow jungle path accessible by foot. Come here for pure tranquillity. Koh Phi Phi Ley is an uninhabited island located 1.5 kilometres off the southern tip of Phi Phi Don. With stunning vertical limestone rocks jutting out of the sea topped with luscious greenery and small sandy bays. Here you will find the famous Maya Bay, a bay of aquamarine water surrounded by limestone cliffs and white sand beach. If you are looking for a great snorkelling spot make sure you head to Loh Sama Bay. Located on the south side of the island and only accessible by speedboats or long-tails, here you will find beautiful coral and tropical fish.

will find this 20 kilometre long stretch of beautiful beaches along the Andaman Sea coastline, Khao Lak. A great alternative to Phuket, however a lot less touristy. Think relatively unspoiled nature, uncrowded beaches and beachfront resorts, a great place for a relaxing, peaceful holiday. Khao Lak is made up of three main areas each with their own beach. Bang La On is the most tourist friendly area, with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants to keep you entertained and just a short walk to the towns beach, Nang Thong. Bang Niang, with a more Thai feel, home to the outdoor market held every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday and Khao Lak’s nightlife centre. Khuk Kak, definitely the least touristy of the three so a great place for a more local feel. Just over an hour's drive is the Khao Sok National Park. Here you can experience nature activities like jungle trekking, waterfalls and river rafting, a great place to explore for the day if you are looking for some adventure. Two hours north you will find the Cheow Larn Lake, an artificial lake created in 1982, surrounded by limestone cliffs and rainforest jungle, this area is inhabited by many animal species.

backpacker's dream back in the 70s, today the island is bustling with tourists from around the globe. The most known area, Chaweng, is a seven kilometre stretch of beachfront lined with resorts and packed with restaurants, markets and a bustling nightlife. Water sport enthusiasts rate this area as second to none as it’s all available here. At night time the beach stays alive and you can pretty much bar hop your way along the beach. If you are wanting something a little quieter, head to Bo Phut or Lamai. Bo Phut, a charming beach village, is located on the northern coast of Koh Samui and is one of the few places that retains some of the island's original Thai-Chinese atmosphere. Lamai Beach is the second largest resort area on the island, but offers a more laid back atmosphere. As well as the beaches, Koh Samui’s interior is filled with coconut plantations, rice paddies and some lovely waterfalls, so allow some time to explore this beautiful island beyond its coastline.

large, mountainous island covered in coconut trees and surrounded by white sand beaches and aquamarine waters. Renowned for its famous monthly Full Moon Party at Haad Rin beach that attracts thousands of young party goers. However during the rest of the month the island is a peaceful paradise calling your name. Blessed with some of Thailand’s most spectacular beaches, most of which are only moderately developed. Head to Thong Nai Pan beach, located on the north-eastern part of the island for great accommodation options, a variety of restaurants and a great beach. The main village of Haad Rin has a beautiful beach with plenty of accommodation, restaurants and bars to keep you entertained. During Full Moon Haad Rin does get very busy so it's best to explore the other beaches over this time. Diving and snorkelling are also highlights, with shallow coral reefs surrounding the island with plenty of tropical fish. For something a little different head to Wat Pho located in Baan Tai. Offering Thai massages for only $6 an hour and featuring a traditional style sauna heated by burning wood with herbs such as lemon grass.

With easily accessible, diverse diving right off its shores and plenty of places to gain your PADI certifications, there’s no denying the fact that this is one of the top diving destinations in the world. The shallow, crystal clear waters of Koh Tao feature abundant marine life including turtles, stingrays, barracudas, fish and reef sharks. Don’t worry, you don’t need to be a keen diver to come here, you can simply enjoy any of the many bays and beaches around the island. Jansom Bay is one of Koh Tao’s beautiful, private beaches, offering clear, emerald waters filled with marine life, soft powder sands and interesting rock formations. The island is also home to a Hawksbill and Green turtle breeding ground and certain scuba diving centres have helped reintroduced hundreds of juvenile turtles out in the wild.

For one of the best Thai dinners on the island make sure you check out My Friend restaurant located at Haad Rin Beach.

Take a day trip out to Koh Nang Yao, three islands connected by two strips of white sand that serve as a beach during low tide. Famous for great snorkelling and diving spots as well as clear, blue waters, a perfect place to relax with barely anyone next to you. Don’t forget to try out the world’s only zip line between two islands!
