The historic city of Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam; a beautiful and fascinating city full of lakes, tree-lined boulevards and French Colonial architecture.

The cyclo is a three-wheel bicycle taxi appeared in Vietnam during the French colonial period. A double seat is supported by the two front wheels, with the driver sitting behind.

Your half-day tour includes a visit to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum where the embalmed body of the late President was laid to rest after his death in 1969. You will also visit the Ho Chi Minh Museum, the house-on-stilts where the president resided from 1957 until his death and the historic One Pillar Pagoda. The next stop on your tour is the Temple of Literature; the first University in Vietnam. Originally constructed in 1070 and rebuilt by the government in 2000 its main purpose is to remind the youth of Vietnam to try to study as their ancestors did. Also included is a visit to a temple dedicated to Confucius, the founder of Confucianism; the main religious belief held in Vietnam during its period of Feudalism.

Travelling this traditional transport offers you a great view of the city as you visit the Museum of Ethnology which depicts all aspects of the lives, customs and activities of the 54 ethnic groups that make up Vietnam. Enjoy a cyclo tour of the Old Quarter of Hanoi. The Old Quarter in Hanoi is over one thousand years old and today retains much of the old flavour that made the area special in earlier times, filled with people living upstairs while running a family business at street level.

If you are in Hanoi and are a bit dubious or scared to try the much talked about street food then this is the way to do it. A street food tour will give you a unique experience to try the foods of the locals.

The alleys just keep going on and the local houses are built very close together. Your walking tour around these amazing alleys with their local houses is a great opportunity for you to see and experience the lives of the people living there. Originally there were 36 streets in the Old Quarter, with each street selling a particular product - such as Silk Street or Paper Street. Spend a day exploring the essential sights of the Vietnam’s capital city Hanoi. Begin with a tour of the Ho Chi Minh Complex; the Mausoleum, Presidential Palace and the house-on-stilts where Uncle Ho resided from 1957 until his death and the historic One Pillar Pagoda, built in the Eleventh Century.

For centuries silk was considered a luxury and was one of the most highly cherished commodities. Today, the cloth may be more affordable but the process to create this fine fabric is still fascinating.

Next take in the Temple of Literature; constructed in 1070 and dedicated to Confucius, one of the world’s most famous scholars and the father of Confucianism. After a tasty lunch at a local restaurant visit the Museum of Ethnology and discover more about the many ethnic groups that make up the country of Vietnam. Your next stop will take in the picturesque surrounds of Hoan Kiem Lake where you can visit the Ngoc Son Temple by crossing the “Flood of Morning Sunlight” bridge. And end with the Quan Thanh Temple at West Lake. Dated to the Eleventh Century, the temple is one of four holy temples in Hanoi.

Begin with a drive to the Tram Gian Pagoda, built more than 500 years ago. Follow the ancient staircase to the Bell tower with its beautiful tiled roof and intricately carved columns. You may walk to “noodle village” where the villagers make noodles from powdered arrowroot. Continue to the Silk Village that supplies all the silk to the Northern Markets. Duong Lam Village

Cycle Tea Plantation

Travel west of Hanoi to Duong Lam village, a purely agricultural village of the Northern Red River delta that still preserves many hundred-year-old houses.

A magical opportunity to discover the traditional countryside of Vietnam and the popular Tea culture - by bicycle.

Visit Mong Phu temple in Mong Phu commune - the only hamlet whose original village entrance remains intact. Continue through the narrow alleys to see the old laterite houses which make up this charming village. For lunch, enjoy a local style meal in a 100-year old house. After visiting Mia Pagoda, built in the 15th century, some 287 statues of all sizes can be seen here, among which are famous sculptures such as the statue of Buddha and the statues of the ‘Eight Vajra Deities’.

After a 2 hour drive to Tan Cuong Village, which is a famous tea growing area, you board your bicycle to cycle through villages and farmland where farmers may be picking tea leaves. Cycle through tea plantations, rice fields and traditional villages and Nui Coc Lake. Lunch will be served at one of the local houses and you can then experience the different steps of making tea as your tea expert explains the life cycle of the tea processing including its history, traditions and family stories. End the day with a visit to the local tea museum before driving back to Hanoi.

Cycle Handicraft Villages

Perfume Pagoda

An opportunity to ride country roads and visit traditional family craft villages. Driving north-east across the Red River to Bat Trang Ceramic village. This 1000 year-old village is famous and you will visit a family factory to see how ceramic is produced both in a traditional and modern way.

Set amongst limestone cliffs the Pagoda is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhism. Depart Hanoi and drive through the countryside with glimpses of rural life.

Then begin cycling along villages to But Thap Pagoda. Enjoy the peaceful countryside the river meanders through dotted with rural villages. But Thap Pagoda with a beautiful stone stupa remains quite untouched. Lunch is with a local family. Then visit Dong Ho folk painting, famous because it uses natural materials. The printing paper is made from the bark of a tree. You will visit some artists to learn how the painting is made. Late in the afternoon, transfer back to your hotel in Hanoi by vehicle.

On arrival board a river boat for a scenic 1.5 hour journey along the Yen stream as there are no roads leading to the Pagoda. Your first stop on the journey will be the Trinh Temple, the Shrine for First Presenting, after which you will make your way to the main wharf and begin the climb up the mountain to the main grotto of Huong Tich where each stalactite and stalagmite has its own legend. Make your way back down the mountain to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in Thien Tru before moving on to view the Thien Tru Pagoda and the stunning scenery of one of the holiest Buddhist sites in the country.

A short walk to Hoan Kiem Lake introduces you to one of the fascinating insights to Vietnam – how to cross the street when so many bicycles and motor scooters are rushing past!

Depart Hanoi for your drive to Ninh Binh which will take approximately 2 hours. From here you can visit the Ancient capital and the remaining two temples of Dinh King & Le King. Here start cycling through the countryside to Tam Coc known as the Ha Long Bay on Land (16km ride). After lunch at a local restaurant, you can sit back and relax while you are rowed in a small bamboo boat through the rice fields, caves and mountain ranges - taking in the beauty of the natural, stunning landscape. Later this afternoon visit Bich Dong cave pagoda built in 1428. Drive to the Legend Hotel in Ninh Binh City for your overnight stay with dinner at the hotel included

Journey to Hoa Binh and into the mountains to Mai Chau making photo stops along the way. Enjoy lunch at Lac village, then walk around the local villages. Your stop for the evening is at a traditional stilt-house in a village of the White Thai minority. Here you will enjoy a traditional dinner and a basic but comfortable night’s sleep .

Depart for the journey to Tam Coc to board a small rowing boat through the rice fields and mountain ranges of this stunning region. Pass through three tunnel caves that have been hewn from the limestone by the forces of nature. Visit the historic Bich Dong Pagoda (15th Century). Drive to the ancient capital of Hoa Lu and two temples dedicated to King Dinh and King Le, heroes and dynastic founders from the 10th Century. After immersing yourself in the history of the area you will once again board your vehicle for the return journey to Hanoi.

After breakfast drive to Phat Diem stone church 28km southeast of Ninh Binh city. Phat Diem Cathedral was built between 1875 and 1899. Phuong Dinh Church, part of the Phat Diem complex, is a giant building entirely made of stone. Numerous stone sculptures are on the inside and outside walls. A large bell cast in the 1890s weighing nearly 2 tons is found in the bell tower. After lunch at a local restaurant, we drive to Gia Vien district, for a boat trip to the Kenh Ga floating village - accessible only by boat. Gliding along the river and canals, weaving one’s way through the boathouses and fishing vessels of Kenh Ga is a unique experience and there is no other place in Vietnam that combines the stunning backdrop of the limestone cliffs with an authentic floating village. Return to Hanoi late afternoon.

This morning we visit the markets in search of the “Hue conical poem hat”. Artisans weave typical images of Hue or even poems into the hat to make it distinct. The vast area of the Angkor Thom ruins, over a mile on one side, contains many stone temples and other features to explore. Continue to the ruins of Bayon, Baphoun, the Royal Enclosure Phimeanakas and the Elephant terraces. The Bayon Temple is a Buddhist temple but retains elements of Hindu cosmology and imagery. It is known for its enigmatic smiling faces and its extraordinary bas-reliefs. Then visit the jewel - Angkor Wat. This morning travel to Hue via the spectacular Hai Van Pass. After leaving Hoi An the first stop is Marble Mountain, a whole village devoted to carving beautiful sculptures, then stop briefly at the Cham Museum filled with artefacts from the ancient Cham Kingdom, before heading over the pass. Once rated by National Geographic as one of the 50 ‘must-do’ journeys in the world. Stunning views await at the top of Lang Co Beach and out to the South China Sea. Today explore the historical significance on a city tour of the small city of Hue – the former Imperial City. Start the day with a boat trip along the Perfume River to Thien Mu Pagoda. Then continue by car to the Ancient Citadel, the capital of Vietnam from 1802-1945, where the last King of Vietnam – Bao Dai King – abdicated on 30 August, 1945. Today a full day exploring the stunning Angkor Temples. Tour to Banteay Srey then the South Gate of Angkor Thom. The vast area of the Angkor Thom ruins, over a mile on one side, contains many stone temples and other features to explore. Continue to the ruins of Bayon, Baphoun, the Royal Enclosure Phimeanakas and the Elephant terraces. The Bayon Temple (circa 1190) is a Buddhist temple but retains elements of Hindu cosmology and imagery. Then visit the jewel - Angkor Wat. This morning depart Ho Chi Minh City for the drive through the beautiful agricultural areas known as the fruit bowl of Vietnam – the Mekong Delta. On arrival in the Mekong, a boat trip takes you across the River to explore the myriad of estuaries and islands. Visit orchards and bonsai gardens and sample the wonderful array of fruit. This morning a boat trip visits Cai Rang floating market where fresh produce is bought and sold between boats the surrounding areas. This morning visit the pre-Angkorian temple of Wat Hanchey. Return to the ship to witness a blessing ceremony performed by local monks. Then we cruise towards Kampong Cham to visit Wat Nokor, a Wat built within the ruins of an ancient temple which holds a timeless story. Day 18 Kampong Chhnang (B, L, D)

Today the ship cruises on to Kampong Chhnang, Cambodia’s “Water World” where everything is on stilts balanced on water rich soil. See the Khmer-styled pottery at the Aundaung Russey village. Then, back to the river for an adventurous motorboat excursion to the wetlands, floating houses and fish farms in the region. The Tonle Sap (The Great Lake) is the flowing heart of Cambodia, giving life to the nation. Enjoy the stillness of the water and the quiet tranquility on the way to Siem Reap. Enjoy a day sailing downstream admiring the unspoilt beauty of the Da River. We pass the Ba Vi National Park with its rich and diverse tropical and sub-tropical flora and fauna before arriving at Hoa Binh. We will visit the UNESCO village of Duang Lam.

Hoa Binh was the site of a major battle with the French in 1951 & 1952 and is home to the Muong ethnic group. This morning we will take a boat ride to visit a local village and tonight enjoy a traditional performance by the local hill tribe people.

Docked in the bustling city of Hanoi, visit some highlights of this Asian metropolis including the notorious prison known as the Hanoi Hilton, temple of literature where Confucius did his thinking and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. An afternoon walking tour includes a visit to a coffee shop to learn about Vietnam’s famous coffee making industry. Day 7 Lower Red River (B, L, D)

Continue cruising Halong Bay this morning. Then enter the river delta in the afternoon and set sail upstream to Pha Lai where the Pandaw will anchor mid-stream for the night.

Visit Bat Trang ceramic village then sail through the day from Hanoi up the Red River to Viet Tri. A shore excursion visits the Thay and Tay Phuong Pagodas, hardly known, yet with exquisite temples dating from the 8th and 11th century and home to some fine Buddhist statuary carved from jackfruit trees.

Located within the grounds of the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda is so named because of its floor, which is made up of 5000 silver tiles. Early this morning board the ferry service between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. This service operates between July and March when water levels are high enough. The service is like an airline seat but often very full, so many people opt to sit on the roof where it is cooler but offers good views for part of the way. The journey generally takes around 4 ½ - 5 hours.

This morning after breakfast drive through to Vang Vieng about 3 hours away. On the way you will stop at Km52 Hmong village before proceeding to Ban Tha Heu – a fishermans village. On arrival in Vang Vieng you will have free time at leisure. Day 3 Vang Vieng – Xieng Khuang (B)

After breakfast visit an organic farm then drive to Xieng Khuan. This is about a 6 hour trip but you will make short stops enroute at Phu Khoune and the Tham Pha (Buddha Cave) and witness beautiful scenery and pass many panoramic lookouts on the winding mountain roads. Day 5 Xieng Khuang – Luang Prabang (B)

ounded in 849 AD on the flat plain overlooking the Ayeyarwady River, Bagan came into its prime when the Burmese King Anawrahta rose to power in 1044. Under him, a tremendous period of temple building began and did not end until the invading

armies of the Mongol Kublai Khan approached in 1287. Of the original 10,000 pagodas, about 3,000 remain standing today, some small and graceful and others soaring toward the sky. Inside some temples the original frescoes and stucco reliefs on the walls can still be

seen. One of the most beautiful sights in Myanmar is a panoramic view looking over the temples of Bagan at sunset or sunrise. A trip to nearby Mt. Popa, legendary home of the nats, or spirits, is often combined with a visit to Bagan.

Day 2 YANGON – MANDALAY (B)

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Mandalay. Upon arrival in Mandalay enjoy a sightseeing visit to the former royal capital of Amarapura, and see U Bein’s Bridge, the world’s longest teakwood structure. Then visit Inwa, another former royal capital, and travel by pony cart down tree-lined paths to see old palace walls, wooden monasteries, and the ‘leaning tower of Ava’. Overnight in Mandalay. Day 3 MANDALAY (B)

Sightseeing today includes gold leaf hammering, Mahamuni pagoda, Shwenandaw Monastery - noted for its exquisite wood carvings and Kuthodaw Pagoda, renowned as the world’s largest book for its stone slabs of the entire Buddhist scriptures. Early morning departure from Mandalay to Bagan by modern ferryboat service. A pleasant way to spend the day as you travel down the fabled Ayeyarwaddy River. Arrive in Bagan in the late afternoon. Overnight in Bagan.

Day 6 BAGAN – HEHO (INLE LAKE) (B)

Transfer to the airport this morning for the flight to Heho. Upon arrival at Heho airport transfer to your hotel at Inle Lake and begin sightseeing of this magical and unique area by long tailed boat. Highlights include the boatmen with their ‘onelegged’ rowing style, the floating gardens and the ‘jumping cats’ monastery. Overnight at Inle Lake. Day 7 INLE LAKE (B)

Payment A non-refundable deposit of $250 pp is required to make your booking. Any domestic train and flight tickets are also required to be paid with the deposit as once booked, these are NON-Refundable. Full payment is required 42 days before your departure from New Zealand.

Cancellation by the Client Any cancellation by a client must be made in writing. The date on which Active Asia receives the email or letter will determine the cancellation charges applicable. The cancellation charges below are a percentage of the total price, excluding insurance. A/ Cancellation more than 30 days before departure: Loss of deposit PLUS any domestic train and flight costs B/ Between 29 days and 7 days before departure: 50% of total booking C/ Less than 7 days before departure â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 100%. Insurance is strongly recommended. Please note that once purchased train and domestic airfares are non-refundable. No refund for any unused travel arrangements after departure.

Prices and Surcharges All prices are correct to the best of our knowledge. Events beyond our control may result in price increases; AA reserves the right to pass on these changes if necessary.

Flexibility The client should appreciate and acknowledge that the nature of travel in Asia may sometimes require flexibility and should allow for alternatives. It is understood that the route, schedules, itineraries, amenities and mode of transport may be subject to alteration without prior notice, due to local circumstances or events, which may include sickness, mechanical breakdown, flight cancellations, strikes, events emanating from political disputes, entry or border difficulties, climate and or other unpredictable or unforeseeable circumstances.

Changes AA reserves the right to change any of the facilities, services or prices described should it become necessary in the interests of safety or other unforeseen circumstances. AA will provide services equal to or exceeding those advertised if at all possible.

Travel Documents The client must be in possession of a valid passport and all visas, permits and insurance. It is ultimately the responsibility of the client to ensure they have the necessary documentation.

Factors outside AA control AA cannot accept any liability for matters outside its control such as political disputes, border closures, refusal of visas, industrial action, delayed flights or unforeseeable climatic changes.

Insurance The client is willing to accept full responsibility for insurance which must cover personal accident, medical expenses, loss of effects, repatriation costs and all other expenses which might arise as a result of loss, damage, injury, delay or inconvenience occurring to the client. It is strongly recommended that all clients have personal travel insurance.

Unused Services There will be no refunds for any unused services.

Claims and Complaints If a client has a complaint about any service or product supplied by AA they must, if on a group tour, first inform their Tour Manager whilst on the tour so that they can attempt to rectify the matter. Any other or further complaint must be put in writing to AA within 30 days of the end of the tour. Any clients on Independent arrangements should firstly try to take the matter up with the hotel or supplier at the time of the problem. Failure to bring the problem to the attention of the local supplier may forfeit any possibility of a refund or resolve to the problem. Any concerns should be bought to the attention of Active Asia, in writing, within 30 days.
