PLATINUM CLUB

THERE ARE VERY FEW GLOBAL JOURNEYS CONSIDERED NATIONAL TREASURES BUT THE GHAN AND INDIAN PACIFIC ARE, WITHOUT QUESTION, ICONIC AUSTRALIAN EXPERIENCES. From the moment you step aboard these legendary trains, you can feel it – a spirit of adventure and a sense of something very special about to unfold. Traversing the full length and breadth of the world’s largest island by rail captures the rich tapestry of landscapes, colours, flavours, climates, wildlife and human endeavour that together define the Great Southern Land. These are adventures without peer. And they bring people together. One of the unexpected rewards of joining these coveted rail journeys is the wonderful camaraderie created among those who share the excitement of the trip of a lifetime. It is a moving, emotional and unforgettable experience to ride the rails of history.

It’s a 65-hour transcontinental journey of a scale to stir the wanderlust in anyone. Journeying from one ocean to another, transported in superior comfort on the longest stretch of straight railway in the world, enjoying fine food and wine as you go ... it’s what travel dreams are made of. Emblazoned with a striking wedge-tailed eagle motif that symbolises the scope, range and significance of each epic crossing, the Indian Pacific has been traversing Australia for almost 50 years. The standard gauge rail that made the first trip across Australia possible was extended again in 1983 enabling the train to service Adelaide, which remains a focal point today for all rail journeys. A far cry from the days of endless rail hops to get from one end of the country to the other, guests on the Indian Pacific and The Ghan now travel in style with the choice of Platinum or Gold Service. Both service levels include a huge range of immersive Off Train Experiences to fully experience the richness of the unique environments they travel through.

Half a century later, rail construction transformed the delivery of goods across inland Australia, but the incredible contribution of these outback pioneers was immortalised when the first steam train rolled into Stuart (which later became Alice Springs) in 1929. On that momentous journey, the train was dubbed ‘The Afghan Express’ and then shortened to the legend it is today, ‘The Ghan’.

GOLD SERVICE TWIN CABIN

The legend of The Ghan stems from the 1830s when the first Afghan cameleers arrived in Australia.

BROKEN HILL, NSW

Like its sister train, the Indian Pacific’s story is also one of nation-building. With a 10,000-strong welcoming party, the train’s arrival for the first time in Perth in 1970 heralded a significant moment in Australian history as the first unbroken rail trip to span the country’s eastern and western boundaries – the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
