Lattes & Lycra As well as fantastic countryside and an Olympic legacy, Surrey cycling boasts a thriving ‘cycle café’ scene REBECCA WRIGHT

On a sunny Sunday morning in Surrey, you’re likely to see hundreds of cyclists whizzing past you as they enjoy the green lanes and picturesque villages that make the county the South East’s cycling hotspot. The scene has grown tremendously over the last 10 years partly due to the Olympic effect of the 2012 Games when the road race was held in South West London and North Surrey. The Olympic Legacy is carried on by the Prudential Ride London-Surrey 100, a race which starts in the Olympic Park and takes place every year at the end of July. But there’s another special element to the Surrey cycling scene that’s enticing cyclists and non-cyclists alike: the county’s ‘cycle cafés’ that act as shops, meeting points, advice centres and foodie hotspots too. G!ro – whose name means ‘tour’ in Italian - is one such café that was set up by keen

cyclists Jordan Addison, 34, and Neil Goodman, 43, five years ago in Esher. Jordan, who grew up in Byfleet where he still lives, says: ‘I’m so proud of the impact G!ro’s had on individuals and our community. It’s great to see so many people from all kinds of backgrounds getting together to ride thanks to G!ro.’ It all started in 2012 when he got friendly with fellow cyclist Neil while they were both training for a triathlon. Neil had worked for years in the cycling industry, setting up his own distribution company for cycling brands. ‘We were talking about how cycling had taken off so much in Surrey and that there was a need for some kind of clubhouse for cyclists in Esher where many people stopped en route out of London when heading for Box Hill. ‘But as we thought about it more, the idea transformed into a shop/café where people could meet, eat and ride together as well 9

as get advice, buy bikes and stock up on equipment,’ explains Jordan.

opened up another branch in Cranleigh in January 2016.

After finding a location on Esher High St, the café opened in October 2013. With its exposed brickwork, roomy layout and cycling prints on the walls, it’s become a bit of an institution in Esher. In the same year as G!ro started, another café called Maison Du Velo (‘bike house’ in French) opened up.

Like G!ro, Maison du Velo sells cycling equipment and bikes, focussing on heritage and unusual brands Cyclists take their to stand out from what’s widely coffee particularly available on the internet. cyclists return to the café for lasagne and a beer (£5) afterwards.

Their cakes come from Pinnocks café in Ripley and they serve a range of brunch favourites and cycling fuel like banana and peanut butter on toast.

Rides like these are central to the community ethos of both cafés, as riders make friends with others at their level and arrange their own private rides to build up their cycling circle.

Superior coffee is also available at Maison Du Velo where they offer their Horsham Coffee Roasters regular house blend coffee and a guest blend every week to keep things varied for their customers. There’s also a range of cakes including millionaire’s shortbread, sandwiches, soup and pasta. With good food and a community feel, it’s not surprising that both cafés have also attracted non-cyclists who use them as meeting spots for mums and babies or for home-based workers to set up their laptops. One night a week Maison Du Velo offers an hour and a quarter long ride and where

At G!ro, there are three different rides to accommodate different levels and a regular ladies only ride while Maison du Velo has a similar programme. Tom says: ‘Cycling in Surrey is definitely special. It’s true it’s not like the Alps or Yorkshire but there are terrific views from Box Hill and lots of greenery. And it’s all within such easy reach of one of the biggest cities in the world.’ And with cycle cafés providing sustenance, advice and camaraderie, what more could you possibly want?

Surrey: A Wine Lover’s Paradise The county’s vineyards are making a name for themselves REBECCA WRIGHT

When you think of rolling hills covered in vines, your thoughts probably fly to France or Italy. But as English wine becomes more and more popular - in 2016 Britain produced over five million bottles of sparkling wine - an exciting wine scene is developing in Surrey. The Surrey Hills area of the county is perfect for growing wine for two reasons: one is the area’s chalky soil, which is beloved by the vines, drains easily and which gives the wine minerality of flavour. The other is that the south facing aspect gets maximum sunshine to help ripen the grapes.

vineyards eventually fell into disarray until 1981 when restoration work began on the park. Now wine is on sale again at Painshill and thanks to a new breed of viticulturists, Surrey wine is firmly back on the map.

A brief glance at the Surrey scene reveals an array of vineyards including Denbies, Greyfriars, Albury Organic Vineyard, Godstone and High Clandon. Many of their products are sold at ‘wine boutique’ Cellar Wines in Ripley and there’s Amazingly, you can also the Surrey Wine School in Guildford, which runs accredited actually trace the courses and tastings.

very beginnings of English wine back to Surrey and to Painshill Park in Cobham.

Amazingly, you can actually trace the very beginnings of English wine back to Surrey and to Painshill Park in Cobham. Aristocrat Charles Hamilton bought the land, creating a park complete with follies and grottoes. And one of his first projects was planting a vineyard and making wine with some success. Sadly, along with the rest of the estate, the

Owner of Albury (www. alburyvineyard.com), Nick Wenman, 60, is an awardwinning member of this new tribe.

Obsessed with wine from a young age, Nick was 17 when he won the school economics prize and requested the World Atlas of Wine and Spirits as his reward! He did a night course in his early 20s and always maintained an interest in wine until 2007 when he bought land near Shere to plant a vineyard.

21

Both vineyards’ wines have reached the taste buds of top sommeliers with Albury stocked at Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir and Tom Kerridge’s Marlow pub, The Hand and Flowers and Greyfriars at the Coral Room of the Bloomsbury Hotel.

Nick, who’d worked in IT for 30 years before starting Albury, says: ‘I wanted a new project and after doing some research and talking to experts, I was persuaded that there was a real viability in organic English wine so when we found the land near where we lived, it seemed like the perfect opportunity.’ In 2009, Nick planted the first grapes and in 2013 Albury produced its first sparkling wine, which was released at the beginning of 2016. It’s a similar story for Hilary Wagstaff, 55, coowner of Greyfriars Vineyard (www.greyfriarsvineyard.co.uk) near Puttenham. Like Albury, Greyfriars specialises in sparkling wine, which is perfect for growing in the UK, as the grapes don’t require as much sun ripening as for white or red wine. Hilary and her husband Mike, 56, had always 22

had a passion for wine and after selling his company to British Gas in 2009, Mike was looking for a new challenge and a bigger place to house their growing family. ‘I’d bought Mike a book about growing wine in the south of England. We were already living in Surrey and looking for a bigger house when we saw one in Puttenham and heard that there was a vineyard for sale down the road,’ Hilary remembers. The Wagstaffs extended the existing vineyard by planting from 2011 to 2015 and there are now 40 acres in total with 62,000 vines, mainly the traditional champagne grapes of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Hilary says; ‘ We were adamant that we wanted to make our own wine not a champagne copy and in 2013 we released our first– a Blanc de Blancs and a sparkling rosé.’

Keeping a Surrey connection and selling well in the county is important to both the Wagstaffs and Nick who all sell predominantly through their websites, at the vineyards and through local retailers and restaurants. And they’ve both done well in awards picking up golds and silvers in international competitions including the Decanter awards. But as pleased they are with all the recognition, Nick and the Wagstaffs both place a high price on being family businesses at the heart of the Surrey Hills community. Three years ago Nick’s daughter Lucy joined Albury and started events at the vineyard, opening it up for ‘ sparkling’ afternoon

teas in partnership with local café The Dabbling Duck, Saturday visits and a popup restaurant in partnership with Kinghams restaurant in Shere. And Hilary explains that Greyfriars was always a family business from the start with her, Mike and her brother-in-law David playing central roles. Hilary’s father and the Wagstaffs’ teenage children even get involved at harvest time too. In the future they hope to have more events and a tasting room on site to embed themselves further in the community. Both businesses are part of Surrey Hills Vineyard Group, which works to build the profile of the area’s wine and encourage tourists to visit the vineyards. And with such high quality products on offer in beautiful surroundings, they’re bound to succeed. Cheers!

Wine not your thing? Surrey is also famous for quality beer and gin Hogs Back Beer

Silent Pool Gin

The Hogs Back Brewery based in Tongham, near Farnham, prides itself on quality, flavourful beers. After opening in 1992, the brewery’s flagship TEA – Traditional English Ale went on to win a raft of award and subsequent launches have given it a reputation for fine ales. In more recent years, the brewery has broadened its range to include new beers including the Montezuma’s Chocolate Lager – a world ‘first’.

The first thing you’ll notice about Silent Pool gin is the stand-out turquoise blue bottle with the beautiful gold design twisting around it.

Beer lovers can combine a shopping trip with a tour of the brewery, which offers generous samples. Tours can be booked online at www.hogsback.co.uk/tour-booking

And there’s a lot more that makes this distiller different. They proudly bottle their spirits onsite ensuring that each product is entirely crafted within the four walls of the distillery. Nestled on the banks of the spring-fed Silent Pool, deep within the rolling Surrey Hills, the distillery is open to visitors seven days a week and there are tours covering all aspects of production including product sampling. www.silentpooldistillers/tours

Beautiful Bosham While away the hours in this sleepy Sussex gem REBECCA WRIGHT

Chichester harbour boasts many beautiful spots but if you’re looking for a place to relax, take in some gorgeous scenery and treat yourself to the best in food and drink, then Bosham is one of your best bets.

In August, the club runs Junior Week, which is great fun to watch, and at the beginning of September classic boat enthusiasts will be showing off their vessels in the Bosham Classic Boat Revival. classicboatrevival.co.uk

The village (pronounced ‘Bozzum’) is situated on one of the many inlets in the harbour and is a sheltered base for sailing. There are pretty tile-hung cottages dotted around the harbour For a small village, Bosham boasts and a fine old pub some upmarket right in the middle of the action. shops. Some of the Bosham boasts a fascinating history too: it was first inhabited by the Romans and it’s also where King Canute is said to have tried to hold back the tide.

Sailing Bosham is a magnet for sailors thanks to its sheltered harbour. Based in an eighteenth century tide mill and founded in 1907, the Bosham Sailing Club is at the heart of the scene. The club is a Royal Yachting Association-recognised training centre, which runs courses for beginners and offers a wide variety of events and activities. You don’t even have to own your own boat so it’s easy to get in on the action. www.boshamsailingclub.com 39

You can enjoy fine dining in the 2 AA rosette Millstream restaurant or lighter, more informal eating at the hotel’s Marwicks Brasserie or just a drink and snack in the bar or sitting room.

Afternoon tea is a popular choice for non-residents. A decadent selection of sandwiches, cakes and scones is £17.50. www.millstreamhotel.com 01243 573234

The Millstream restaurant’s menu changes seasonally but favourites include twicebaked blue cheese soufflé with a cheddar and spring onion sauce (£8.50), followed by fillet of bream with shellfish bisque, crushed potatoes and crab beignet (£22). Marwick’s (named after William Marwick who lived at the Millstream in the 18th century) offers starters like Thai chicken satay skewers (£6), mains including fillet of hake with a warm

Shopping For a small village, Bosham boasts some upmarket shops. Some of the best are in Bosham Walk, where 20 arts and craft shops are all housed in one building on a picturesque street. There are art galleries, pottery and vintage shops and the centre runs craft courses too.

Take a two-mile walk around the harbour on shore road (or when the tide is in, you walk on a raised footpath called The Trippet), up Lower Hone Lane to a small wooded footpath on the right-hand corner of Smugglers Lane, which takes you to the waters edge. Wait there and a little ferry will come and take you across the water to the village of Itchenor where you can reward yourself with lunch.

Food & Drink The Anchor Bleu pub has an enviable location, slap bang on the water in the middle of the harbour. The family-run business is a bit of an institution, popular with sailors, locals and visitors alike. Priding itself on serving high quality, locally-sourced food at good prices, the pub specialises in an upmarket spin on pub classics. Kick off with a fishy starter like whitebait on mixed leaves with citrus mayo (£7.95) before munching on an Anchor Bleu burger with chips (£11.95). They also have a ploughman’s and catch of the day available every day too. There’s an interesting range of beers available on tap including Adnams Dry Hopped Lager, Buttcombe Bitter and Flowerpots IPA. www.anchorbleu.co.uk 01243 573956

Sights The church of Holy Trinity Bosham dates back to the seventh century and is right in the heart of the harbour. The church famously features in the Bayeaux tapestry because Harold II sailed from Bosham to negotiate with William of Normandy, leading him to return for the Battle of Hastings in1066. www.boshamchurch.org.uk

Walks

If you fancy something a bit more challenging, try the walk that starts off at nearby Fishbourne Roman Palace and takes you into Bosham and the village of Fishbourne too. It’s just over five miles and is easy terrain, suitable for all levels of walker. Get the map and more information online: www.longmanwalks.co.uk/fishbournebosham-walks

Insiders’ Tip Shore Road that runs round the harbour is completely under water at high tide so NEVER be tempted to park there - the tide comes in really quickly - it’s known as ‘the Bosham car wash‘ and has ruined many cars.

How uses Social Media to Successfully Sell Property Buying houses today is generally done in comfort, with a hot drink and an iPad! important. The information that house. delivers is based around the lifestyle of the house, where the good schools are, how far to the train station, where can I get a coffee!! All this can be delivered directly to your buyers in pictorial form, beautiful imagery and stunning movies. Furthermore, it is an incredibly cost effective way of getting your property in front of the exact target market who might like to buy it.

Engaging with buyers in the comfort of their own home enables us to actively target and deliver the information that they want. They may well be looking on the traditional property portals, such as Rightmove and Zoopla, however via social media house. has developed a unique marketing strategy that enables its clients’ properties to be presented in such a way that it sells the lifestyle, not just the property. By displaying beautiful photographs and imaginative movies, and we can’t overstate how important stunning photography is, in a format that buyers are familiar with (be it on Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn), potential buyers are likely to be much more receptive. Every Estate Agent is online… but truly understanding your market and audience is so

housepartnership

With social media, the online equivalent of posting a letter to everyone within a certain radius is possible and is something we do as standard for clients who desire this approach. Facebook and Instagram allow us to create posts that are highly targeted to certain users based on their location, demographics and interests – an incredibly powerful tool for putting your house in front of the right people. Facts and statistics will also play a part in selling your home, but a huge part of the purchase decision has nothing to do with numbers, it comes down to an intangible feeling generated by the lifestyle connected to certain properties and that’s where our photography and movies have immense influence. We have always understood the significance and difference that digital marketing can make in generating awareness and ultimately selling your home. That’s why at house., it is always part of our approach and something you can expect as standard.
