Happy Holidays from Housetrends! There is something uniquely reassuring about being “home for the holidays”, surrounded by friends, loved ones, familiar traditions. This issue celebrates the grand decor of a holiday season, offering ideas and inspirations along the way. Tour a home with multiple Christmas trees and hundreds of Byers carolers, pick up a few unexpected holiday tips from local interior design expert Cameron Patrick Neth, or channel fresh insight on hosting the picture perfect holiday party! We’re also excited to feature a magnificent Paso Fino farm that has been transformed into an expansive dream home celebrating the personalities of its homeowners. And finally, tour a South Hills home that has been everything from a four-family home, to a bed and breakfast and even a church, but today has been restored back to a beautiful single-family home. As we reflect on the year, we are ever grateful to our readers, supporters and staff. We are blessed to have the opportunity to share many of Pittsburgh’s finest design projects and are truly passionate about what we do. We would love to hear from you regarding the exceptional projects happening in your own neighborhood. If you’re not already a fan of Housetrends Pittsburgh on Facebook, become one today. As always, our website takes an in-depth look at all the latest trends in the home and garden industry, so visit us at www.housetrends.com. We would like to extend a very special thanks to the ASID Student Chapter at Indiana University of Pennsylvania for their assistance in selecting which “Final Touch” would be used in this issue. SOAK IN STYLE

Discover today’s luxurious lot of bathtubs In 500 BC, citizens of Rome were encouraged to bathe daily, but typically the cleansing occurred in a public bath. Those few who were wealthy enough to afford a private bath enjoyed bathing themselves in a sort of an extravagant private pool. Flash forward a few thousand years: it’s now time to treat yourself like a Roman emperor and enjoy one of these lavish soaks.

OPENING SPREAD: The picturesque grounds are made up of 130 acres. LEFT: Melanie loves the fact that her large family can all dine together for important events and holidays.

A dream farm Two decades ago, a Beaver County farmhouse laid out its welcome mat for the soon-to-be new owner, Fran Azur. Surrounded by 60 acres of rustic rolling hills, Fran’s plan was to convert his new address into a working horse farm. Over time his farm would become home to 15 Paso Fino, and 6 Icelandic horses. Scottish Highland cows would be tossed in the mix to eat foliage and keep things tidy on a property that has now swelled to 130 acres. The awe-inspiring landscape sweeps through, and around the farm in motionless splendor. “We’ve spiffed up the barn and use it for entertaining,” says Fran’s wife, Melanie. “We have cocktail parties and dinner dances here.” Fran and Melanie lead an adventurous life which is continuously chronicled on the walls of their home and barn. The horses’ quarters sing praises, with carefully framed medals lining the walls, many of which are “All Around Grand Champion Awards.” More formal entertaining is saved for the dining room. “The furniture was Fran’s idea,” says Melanie. “He wanted it to have a Scottish Castle theme.” An eclectic mix of their acquired treasures personalizes the room and gives it character. With thirteen family members in tow, Melanie likes that she can gather her whole family at one table. continued >

LEFT: A family that loves to cook finds solace in this kitchen, designed by Liz Murphy.

Inside out Interior designer Liz Murphy has worked with the family for over a decade, and spearheaded the kitchen renovation. “This family loves to cook, and they often cook together,” says Murphy. “It’s a working kitchen, and is easy for preparing meals because of the way it’s been designed.” The design is long and narrow to allow for many cooks to circulate around the island simultaneously. They combined the old kitchen and breakfast room to create one large area, then expanded 2 feet onto the deck to accommodate a built-in buffet area. A handmade table and chairs are painted with inspiring words, such as love, celebrate, eat and gather. “They are warm and gracious people, and it’s very much how they live,” Murphy says with affection. Much of their day to day living is spent in the Great Room. Elegant, yet understated with a lodge-type vibe, it is a “put your feet up” kind of room. Details found on arms of chairs, special trims, and even welding are what bring the pieces to life. Photographs are dedicated to the couple’s beloved horses and world travels. This favorite family gathering place mingles calm comfort, with a hint of historic detail. continued >

Hard work on display Fran had always wanted a place to display his trophies, which until now had been kept in storage units. Architect Alan Dunn worked with Murphy to draft plans for an expansion that would culminate in a dynamic office/trophy room, master bedroom suite, entry hall, front porch and pool. “As it was, the house was a very ordinary ‘saltbox’ lacking in any measurable scale to the beautiful ranch where it was situated,” explains Dunn. “As designers, we had to figure a means of expanding the house, but at the same time integrate the original box in terms of interior flow and exterior massing.” With such a large space added to the back of the house, they felt it critical to balance the home with an appropriately scaled front porch, and entry hall. “Melanie built my office as a Christmas present to me,” says Fran. She kept it a secret in the planning stages, and then presented the concept to him on a homemade video.

LEFT: The great room is a place to relax and hang out with family and friends. BELOW: Fran’s office was a Christmas gift from Melanie. It’s the perfect place to get work done, but also has a relaxed and decorative feel.

The intent was to make it decorative, as opposed to institutional. Fran’s desk has a map of the world imprinted on a tooled leather top. Longtime friends gather here to play poker, watch sports or just sit and reminisce. Looking like a clip from the Wildlife Channel, the room is filled with Fran’s collection of trophies from his hunting and fishing expeditions. continued >

LEFT: The master bedroom is luxurious and comfortable and features a wrought iron fireplace that was hand-forged by a local blacksmith.

Separate closets and separate bathrooms were non-negotiable in the master bedroom blueprint. “We can’t share bathrooms,” laughs Melanie. “That keeps a happy marriage.” Murphy used richly patterned silk to cover windows, and continued it around the bed for a consistent drapery effect. A wrought iron fireplace was hand forged, by a local blacksmith, to look like natural grasses and reeds. The intimate-sized room opens up to the pool, which is used often in the warm months. continued >

By Danielle Krouse ✹ Photo by Craig Thompson Whether you’re decorating your home for the first year or the twentieth, you’re probably always on the lookout for some great new trends to change things up a bit, or add a new take on classic decor. For the past few years, local interior designer Cameron Patrick Neth has been on hand for Housetrends’ readers with great advice on holiday entertaining.

1. 2.

Cameron decorated this Eighty Four, PA home in a formal and elegant theme.

Candles add instant ambiance Cluster a group of candles on a tray in varying heights on fireplace mantels and surrounding shelving. Place pine fragranced candles on side tables, turn the lights low and let the warm glow of the candles and tree welcome your holiday guests. Add extra cheer in children’s rooms Place a small Christmas tree in a child’s bedroom decorated with small toys, miniature dolls, or small sports items. Add twinkling white lights and the effect will be charming.

Meant to Be South Hills home lives life to the fullest By Christina Kleiner | Photos by Craig Thompson

Brad Halstead and Michael Shull’s South Hills home has lived many lives. Built in 1903, the 6,600-square-foot Victorian-style house served as a four-family home for its first fifty years before it was sold to a church group and turned into a place of worship. The dining room served as the altar area, while Sunday school classes were taught in the room which is now the master bedroom. F Eventually the church sold the home to another owner, who turned it into a bed and breakfast. Today, Brad and Michael have made it their personal home, but its rich history still lives on in its unique architecture and detailing. continued >

furnishing trends Patience is a virtue Brad and Michael were very familiar with the house—they lived in a bungalow across the street for quite some time. “We walked through the house during a Christmas home tour and fell in love with it,” Brad says. “Unfortunately, it wasn’t for sale.” Time went by, and the couple moved to another home which they renovated to their liking. They lived there for about a year when, in 2005, they heard the South Hills house was for sale. “Of course we didn’t hesitate to buy it,” Brad recalls. Luckily, the house was in good condition. “Between the church and the bed and breakfast, they kept the architectural integrity of the house intact,” Brad explains. One of the biggest draws for Brad and Michael was the abundance of woodwork, from the elaborate staircase to the intricate trim and molding flowing throughout each room. Made of quarter sawn oak, these elements keep the home’s 100-yearold history alive. Ten-foot ceilings and a plethora of stained glass windows also add charm. “We didn’t have to do too much renovating,” Brad says. “We knocked down a wall to make the master bedroom larger and refurbished the fireplace in the living room beside the grand piano.” continued >

Personal touches Brad and Michael, owners of Bradley Michaels Furniture in Pleasant Hills, utilized their interior design experience to select paint colors and furnishings. The common areas in the home feature soothing natural tones, from Sherwin-Williams’ Mannered Gold paint in the dining room and living room to the dark brown Fired Brick walls in the family room. Comfortable furniture in earth tones and elaborate chandeliers complete the decor in each room. The bedrooms each have their own personality—such as the rich green decor in the master bedroom to the mix of red hues in one guest bedroom. “We were very lucky, the house was essentially a blank slate so the white walls made it very easy to do anything we wanted in each room,” Brad says. Their most recent project was the completion of the basement entertainment room. Brad bought Michael a television for Christmas last year, but they wanted it to have its own designated room. “Our basement wasn’t finished. In fact, it was where we stored all our Christmas decorations,” Brad says. “It was a major undertaking, removing boxes stacked floor to ceiling to make way for the television.” continued >

furnishing trends The new space is a mix of light and dark colors. The blue tone of the walls, paired up with the beige sectional, creates a light and airy feeling. The dark brown leather chair and wood coffee table pop against the cheerful backdrop. Brad says the goal was to create a functional space that doesn’t make you feel as if you’re in a dark basement. “We never thought the basement would become one of our favorite spots, but we spend a lot of time down there now,” he adds.

Creating a new life Brad and Michael enjoy the peaceful sanctuary they’ve created, but they’re also known to open their doors to family and friends. In addition to small gatherings, they host two big parties each year—one for the holidays and the other to celebrate Michael’s birthday. The large rooms and flowing floor plan make entertaining 80-90 people at one time a breeze. Since purchasing the house five years ago, they’ve also hosted several open houses for customers of their furniture store. “We decorated our home with many of the furnishings we carry in the store,” Brad explains. “This allows our customers to envision a finished product and get ideas for their own homes.” The house holds a lot of memories for past owners, and now, for Brad and Michael. “We love everything about the house,” Brad says. “We’re looking forward to creating our own history here.”

OPPOSITE: Crown molding and trim comprised of quarter sawn oak add character to the home. TOP RIGHT: Soothing Oyster Bay, a soft blue paint by Sherwin-Williams, sets the tone in the basement.

MUCH PLEASURE THOU CAN’ST GIVE By Danielle Krouse | Photos by Craig Thompson DECORATING FOR THE HOLIDAYS CAN MEAN SO MANY DIFFERENT THINGS TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE. What is stressful and time consuming for some, is fun and relaxing for others. For one Pittsburgh homeowner, decorating has always been a cherished chance to feel closer to home and reminisce about childhood memories. continued >

Ornamental thoughts It’s all about Christmas trees and carolers in this home. There are large trees and small trees, all with their own themes. It’s not uncommon for more than ten trees to go up during the holidays. Standing tall to greet family and guests is a traditional tree in the home’s foyer, guarded, of course by the father of Christmas, Santa Claus. It is covered with red and gold ornaments for a bright and cheery feel. In the homeowner’s family room, you can find a Tahoe theme, in honor of where the family’s second home is. “The Tahoe tree takes me days to decorate,” says the homeowner. “There are hundreds of ornaments on it.” The ornaments include animals like foxes, and many glass acorns. The homeowner loves that this room is comfortable and full of nature. A white Victorian tree adorned with cardinals and painted glass ornaments sits on display in the parlor. Another small tree the homeowner holds especially dear to her heart is one decorated with ornaments from her childhood. “Some of the ornaments are original and some are replicas from Germany,” she says.

Here we come a caroling Perhaps the stars of the homeowner’s decorating are the hundreds and hundreds of Byers carolers she has, which she started collecting 25 years ago. “I visited the factory where they are made by hand and I was sold,” she says. “Byers is an American-made product, which is very important to me.” The carolers can be found in several rooms throughout the home and an impressive display is in the game room. continued >

Taking the time to decorate has always been important for the homeowner. “I always lived far away,” she says. “Decorating for the holidays and putting these elements out around me, made me feel like home.” Now that she is back in the Pittsburgh area she has more time to decorate and says it really is relaxing for her. “I do all the floral arrangements and garlands myself,” she says. “I used to have a high profile professional job and decorating was always a way of doing something for myself,” she says. “It is a way for me to relax and have fun.” This tree is full of childhood ornaments and very dear to the homeowner.

POTOMAC POUND CAKE 8 ounces butter 3 cups sugar 6 whole eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup sour cream 3 cups all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt Cream room temperature butter on high until fluffy. Add sugar until well blended. Add room temperature eggs one at a time to incorporate, scraping down the sides of bowl frequently. Add vanilla. Measure flour before sifting. Then sift dry ingredients together in a bowl and add to butter, sugar and egg mixture, alternating with sour cream. Then beat batter for ten minutes on medium speed. Bake for 1 hour at 350°F. Makes three one-pound loaf pan pound cakes. After cakes are cool, dust tops with powdered sugar. Great variations: Cranberry Tangerine Pound Cake: Add zest of 1 orange, ½ teaspoon of tangerine oil (this is optional) and 1½ half cups of fresh or 1 cup of dried cranberries to the recipe after it is beaten. Recipe courtesy of The BonBonerie

Preheat oven to 325°F. Grease Bundt pan with butter. Sift together flour, sugar, poppy seeds, salt, baking soda and baking powder in large mixer bowl. Whisk together butter, buttermilk, eggs, lemon zest and vanilla in small bowl. Beat egg mixture into dry ingredients until smooth. Pour batter into prepared pan and place in center of oven. Bake 55 to 60 minutes or until knife inserted into center of cake comes out clean. Remove cake from oven and allow to cool for 30 minutes before turning out onto cooling rack. Meanwhile, combine powdered sugar

and lemon juice with a whisk. Pour over warm inverted cake. Allow to cool before serving.

Snowman Cake Pops 1 box of white cake mix 1 16-ounce can white frosting 2 pounds white candy melts 20 lollipop sticks 1 box fruit roll-ups edible ink markers black candy writer carrot sprinkles red m&ms Cook cake as directed on box and cool completely, trim off sides and bottom (they tend to discolor the white balls) and crumble into large bowl. Mix crumbles thoroughly with a little less than ½ can frosting, with a large spoon or your hands. Should be the texture of play-doh when completely mixed together. Add more frosting if necessary. Roll mixture into quarter-size balls and place on wax paper-covered cookie sheet. For the snowman heads, roll balls slightly smaller than the body. One box of cake mix will make approximately 20 snowmen. Chill balls for several hours to firm. For decorating instructions, go to housetrends.com. Search: Sweet Temptations.

1 tablespoon vanilla extract ¼ teaspoon sea salt 1 pre-baked 10-inch sweet tart shell 2 cups whipped cream 1 pint fresh raspberries

Whisk hot milk mixture into melting chocolate until all chocolate is melted and smooth. Remove from heat and set aside. In another large bowl, whisk together eggs, vanilla and salt then continue to whisk as you gradually add the chocolate mixture. Pour filling into prepared crust. Bake tart until filling is almost set in center about 20 minutes. It will firm up more after coming out of the oven. Transfer to rack and let cool 15 minutes. What kind of shindig is this, anyway? The level of formality you want the party to evoke will help form much of the decision-making you need to do. Therefore, establish upfront if you’re having a formal affair or keeping it more casual and let that be your guide as you pull together the details. For example, for a more formal party, consider sending invitations by postal mail and complementing them with matching printed menus, place cards and thank you notes, creating a more sophisticated event. For a less formal party use an online service such as e-vite.com to email invites to your guests. If you’re an invited guest, be sure to respond to party invitations by the requested RSVP date.

At every party there are two kinds of people—those who want to go home and those who don’t. The trouble is, they are usually married to each other.

—Ann Landers Photo by Mike Stutler

What’s on the menu? Regardless of the style of your party, formal or casual, it is generally easier and less expensive to serve a few appetizers followed by a meal, rather than prepare a large menu of appetizers to serve guests for an entire evening. The number of ingredients needed and the time required to prepare enough variety can make an appetizer-only menu a costly option. Instead, consider serving two to three appetizers followed by a dinner of salad with Gorgonzola cheese and blackberry pear vinaigrette, beef Wellington with red wine demi-glace and sliced potatoes with goat cheese. (Visit housetrends.com for recipes). As a rule of thumb, most adults will nibble six to seven appetizers an hour during the first two hours, and half that amount after that. Also, guests will generally eat about ten percent less at the main meal when appetizers are served beforehand. Round out your menu by offering a wine selection that complements your menu. Terms such as weight, aroma and intensity are often bandied about by wine experts so here’s a quick lesson in pairing the appropriate wine with food. Balance is the goal, so neither the food nor the wine should dominate the other. Therefore, match the commanding taste of intense wines with robust meals. Weight is simply a measure of the viscosity or thickness of the wine so serve heavy wines with rich foods and lighter wines with lighter dishes. Matching aromas is not a big concern, but try to pair aromatic foods with aromatic wines. For an alternative to wine see housetrends.com for a seasonal Cranberry Slush recipe that can be offered with or without alcohol. continued > Photo by Daniel Feldkamp/Visual Edge Imaging

HOUSETRENDS LIVING WELL GUIDE

Elbows off the table, Mabel!

Don’t use scented candles at your dinner table as they can interfere with and overpower the aromas of the food.

Creating a decorated table to showcase your meal, or “tablescaping” as it is often called, can be fun if you’re a creative type or stressful if not. Whether you plan to sit guests down to a formal meal with place settings, or provide a more casual buffet dinner, your table can easily look festive and seasonal. Setting a beautiful table doesn’t require expensive dishes. Give your white bone china table settings an updated look by swapping out just the matching salad plates and replacing them with inexpensive amber, green or purple clear glass plates. Repeat the color in other elements of the table such as napkins, a table runner or placemats to unify the finished look. You may want to incorporate the color onto your invitations and menu cards also. If natural elements are more your style, cover your buffet table with butcher block paper and add a plaid winter scarf or piece of burlap fabric for texture. Place serving dishes of food on a small sled in the center of the table or fill pairs of ice skates with greens for a simple center piece. Don’t underestimate the simple beauty of fresh greens such as magnolia, boxwood or evergreen branches and cleverly arranged fruits such as figs, grapes, pears, persimmon and pomegranate to provide just enough timeless beauty and color to your table. Or consider displaying pots of Narcissus Tazetta, or “paper whites.” Paper whites are fragrant indoor plants for winter and the holiday season, and forcing them to bloom is as easy as putting the bulbs in water with stones or marbles to anchor them in place. The fragrant flowers bloom within about 3 weeks of planting. For extra elegance, lay framed mirrors in the center of your table and set the pots of flowers on top. continued >

Music for your party is a must, so give thought to what your guests will enjoy most, and don’t just turn the radio on and allow whatever is being played to determine the mood of the evening. Create your own music mixes on your MP3 player or use an online music library such as goodnoise.com where you’ll find over 9 million song selections. Turn on the music before your party begins so it feels festive when the first guest arrives, and make sure it isn’t too loud so guests of all ages can converse comfortably. Good background music should not be too invasive or have abrupt transitions that are distracting. Generally, best-of compilations and movie soundtracks work well because they flow well into one another.

Come back any ole time! If you’re on the receiving end of the invitation, then you will want to show the host your sincere gratitude by giving a thoughtful gift that will keep you on the guest list year after year. • For a less formal affair, bring a disposable camera and snap pictures during the party. Leave the camera and a photo album with your host so she can remember what a great party it was. • Give a day-after film fest with a gift of movies, popcorn and a pair of fuzzy slippers. • Encourage a much needed break from cooking with a Take Out Menu Organizer available on-line at uncommongoods.com. Include some local takeout menus and a gift certificate for dinner. • Assemble or purchase a luminary kit of white, lunch size bags, sand and votive candles to be used the night of the party. Offer to stop by early and set up the luminaries before guests arrive.

When the evening of the party arrives, it is interesting to realize that hosts and guests both contribute equally to the most important aspect of the event, and that is a festive, warm and joyful atmosphere. Cheers!
