There’s nothing like the sight of daffodils popping out of the ground and trees covered in pink and white blooms to put a bit of pep in your step and just give you a feeling that pleasant days are ahead. It’s time to grab a glass of tea, pull up a lounge chair and sit back and relax—I suggest while you enjoy this special outdoor living issue of Housetrends. Inside are all kinds of great ideas for taking your family, friends and the fun outside. Fresh Air Feasts gives you great tips for partying al fresco. We take you on a tour of Newport’s charming East Row, and we’ve got lots of incredible outdoor kitchens, handsome decks, and a private pool that rivals a vacation getaway. If you have some free time the first Saturday in May, you should think about joining the Cincinnati Preservation Association on their tour of five stunning homes on Grand Vista in Pleasant Ridge. I admire homeowners who take on the challenge of saving and restoring a historic property. There is something so special about homes built before most of us were born—they have a character of their own and a mysterious past. Plus, we are always happy to support CPA. Take a sneak peek of their tour on page 77. Our entire Housetrends staff thanks you for spending time with us in this issue and hopes you will visit us at www.housetrends.com, Facebook and Twitter for more fresh content, contests and endless photo galleries. you are obsessed with HGTV, you should certainly be familiar with Mike Holmes of “Holmes

on Homes” and “Holmes Inspection.” His mantra when fixing other’s mistakes is to “make it right,” but what he really wants to see is that something has been done right in the first place. I think Holmes would be pleased with this 12,000-square-foot house built by W.V. deStefano Homes with plenty of input from the homeowners. When speaking

with both parties, the words “do it right came up often and with great emphasis. That is because quality was extremely important in this project, not just budget and time frame. From the barn to the house itself to the outdoor living space, no detail was left out, no decision was taken lightly and no expense was spared. The result is a jewel in the crown of everyone involved. continued >

The fateful meeting Dan deStefano, sales and marketing director for W.V. deStefano Homes, shares a funny story that drew the homeowners’ attention to the family-owned company. A couple of years back, one of the homeowners met Steve deStefano, Dan’s father, while he happened to be power-washing a driveway of one of his HOMEARAMA® houses in River’s Bend. “After talking with him, I really liked Steve,” says the homeowner. “He took the time to talk to me and answer some questions, and I knew at the time when we were ready to build the house of our dreams that it would be deStefano that I would choose to make this happen.” Fast forward to 2008, the homeowners had chosen a home site that they loved and were getting ready to close on the property, but knew prior to closing that it would be prudent to select the builder to ensure that the site was not going to pose any major problems. There was no second guessing on the homeowners’ part as to whom they were going to choose for their builder. “We called him (Steve deStefano) on a Friday, and he happened to be in the office. We wanted to meet with him and have him take a look at the lot. We of course wanted to move on it immediately and asked if he was available to meet at the site that next morning and sure enough, he made it happen. We met him at the site Saturday morning and conveyed to him of our desire to build the perfect Tuscan-style villa that would accommodate a family of two parents, four children and six dogs,” says one homeowner. After a multitude of meetings with the builder and Kenneth R. Bowerman Architects, the hands-on homeowners (or “type A personalities” as they refer to themselves) and the builder were ready to break ground. The massive project took well over a year to finish, and boy what a finish! continued > OPENER: A custom front gate provides a handsome, yet secure, entrance. RIGHT: The two-story family room is a great example of how grand meets comfortable in this home. FAR RIGHT: Distinctive woodworking, such as these beams in the dining room, is a favorite finish item for the homeowners.

4/8/11 10:28:41 AM

“We went to the site almost every day,” say the homeowners. “We really were hurry scurry until framing.” Although one of the homeowners had built a home previously, she had not tackled anything of this scale. “I did not realize the amount of detail and time involved, but we had a great time pulling it all together. What was so amazing was seeing it all come to life and knowing that we were instrumental in choosing every material and detail going into the house.” In order for that visual to be realized, the homeowners scoured bookstores, collecting an array of books on architecture, then meticulously cut and pasted into a binder those various examples of design elements they enjoyed.

The element of design compromise Since they knew what they liked, the homeowners decided to serve as their own interior designers. One likes Mission-style furnishings, while the other prefers antiques, so their compromise was to go with a more traditional furniture selection from stores such as Henredon and Arhaus. “In being our own designers, we did not slow down the project at all, which had been a concern to all involved,” says the homeowner.

OPPOSITE TOP: Various textures, including stone, tile, granite, wood and stainless steel all work together to make this large and functional kitchen feel quite cozy. LEFT: Artist Kate Demske designed the striking railings for the dual center staircases. ABOVE: The study gives credit to the builders’ woodworking prowess.

When it came to decision time on everything from the granite for the countertops to backsplashes, from the sinks to the wood floors, the couple worked as a team on most elements. However, when having to make more than one choice in any given time period, one homeowner tackled things like the brick color, stonework and roof shingles, while the other picked the paint colors. Even the most minute details, such as the vanity with slate counter and copper sink, and matching slate flooring for the barn bathroom was painstakingly talked over. Kitchen cabinet handles, knobs, light switches— everything you could imagine—had to be considered for this custom home. The glass doors in the study that are almost two inches thick had to be singled out, and even the outdoor fencing and columns were given special attention. The homeowners did rely on the expertise of people like Kate Demske of Solid Ground Studio, a blacksmith who forged the rather challenging stair railing out of steel, bronze, mica and copper. Gary Lord was the faux painter of choice and even won an award for his work in the house. According to the homeowners, the landscaping company, Pinecrest Nursery, was outstanding as well. Euna Williams, who previously worked with the homeowners on their cabin in Blue Ridge, Georgia, was selected to create all the window treatments and bed ensembles for the house. “She nailed it every single time, in style and color, without even being present in the same city,” rave the homeowners. The lighting allowance for the house was only $25,000; however, all told the actual budget ballooned to around $110,000, which included a builder’s discount! This did not deter the homeowners from selecting the lighting in the house that they felt fit the best. “The lighting is phenomenal,” beam the homeowners. “When you walk through the house, the lighting really pulls everything together.” continued >

ABOVE: The beach entry pool and its lush surroundings give the family plenty of reason to stay home and play. OPPOSITE TOP: The pool’s lagoon-style slide makes a big splash with young and old alike. OPPOSITE BOTTOM LEFT: Although the stables are ready to go, no horses have been added to the family’s collection of animals. OPPOSITE BOTTOM RIGHT: A screened porch just outside the family room is the perfect spot to read or nap.

To give credit where credit is due, the homeowners stressed numerous times that even though they picked all of the selections, the house would not be what it is without Rocky deStefano, coowner of W.V. deStefano Homes, and his crew. “We are known for our woodworking,” says Dan deStefano, “and the homeowner let us design a lot of high-end details. It was very fulfilling to do a true Tuscan home and do it on such a large scale. We were able to do things right and weren’t limited in design or budget. This project showcases our talents and abilities in conjunction with the homeowners.” In fact, when asked what the favorite feature of the house is, one of the homeowners immediately said the wood and plank ceilings.

Entertainment areas The installation of the outdoor entertaining space, encompassing the pool and extra seating area, was definitely a challenge, share the homeowners. From extending the pool 10 feet and dropping it two feet to the concrete work, the pool project did not run nearly as smoothly as the rest of the construction. However, the homeowners could not be happier with the results. “The pool is stunning. We signed up for every bell and whistle there was like the waterfall, infinity edge, beach entry and bubblers, all of which not only the kids enjoy, but the adults absolutely love!” they say. The idea when first designing the house was to have ample room for entertaining, from the largest galas to the modest dinner party. “We had a basketball party for our third grader’s team and the parents went crazy over the house,” says the homeowner. “My sister says, ‘Every time I come over, there is something I hadn’t noticed.’ People also love the doors and arches in the house.” The homeowners chuckle when thinking about the wine and theater rooms in the house, because those rooms are not often used by them. “When we do go into the theater room, we usually fall asleep in there. Our life is just crazy busy, but we would not trade it in for anything,” they say. “We have worked hard to have what we have. This house was a team effort and we absolutely love it.”

Newport’s East Row Garden Club inspires with outdoor antiques By Sarah J. Dills | Photos by Sarah J. Dills/Plan B Photography Gardening is not for the faint of heart. It is time consuming, puts dirt under the fingernails, and usually requires a little upper body strength. But the end result, when a green canvas spreads across the landscape and a rainbow of flowers bloom, is delicious.

Gardening is a lot like

collecting antiques, and just like antiques, a garden gets better with age. So it makes perfect sense that more and more homeowners are adorning their gardens with pieces of their collections as a way to incorporate their personalities into their outdoor oases.

Take a look

at how five members of the East Row Garden Club transformed one man’s junk into their garden treasures.

Colorful collection The antiques in Kathy and Chet Nalepa’s Newport garden are alive. Not just figuratively, but literally alive with roots. When Kathy moved from Anderson Township to Newport three years ago, she had to bring her plants with her. “I transplanted irises from our house in Anderson Township that were my grandmother’s,” Kathy explains. “We put a lot of things in the garden we already had.” Kathy advises people to be patient when transplanting their plants. “This magnolia tree took three years to come around,” Kathy says of the tree that was moved away from the neighboring house to provide more space for its roots. “They come around on their own time.” Kathy and Chet didn’t work on their garden much the first year in their home because they were building a garage behind the house. “The front was in pretty good shape,” Kathy says. “But the back was a blank canvas. There was one tree and a few boxwoods.” The front garden is Victorian, so Kathy wanted to create an English-country garden along the side and back of her home. Charming herbs of lemon thyme, oregano and lavender are individually potted and serve as centerpieces on the two dining tables in Kathy and Chet’s al fresco café. The couple loves their English country garden. “Chet was just excited to throw out his lawn mower,” Kathy says.

Brick by brick At first glance, the backyard garden of John and Rebecca Gilliam seems like that of a typical garden club member. It is well maintained, colorful and inviting. But upon further investigation, something stands out, or up rather, behind the beds of beautiful flowers. The brick walls protecting the Gilliam’s garden are a roadmap of America. From Ohio to The Alamo, the garden walls are built of antique bricks. Not only are they the highlight of the space, they are also a representation of the couple’s personalities. Rebecca was inspired to collect antique bricks on a visit to a friend’s home in Athens, Ohio. “She built her chimney out of old bricks, and I came home and told my husband how interesting it was,” Rebecca explains. “John did some research and found the International Brick Collectors Association. There’s a whole community of people out there who enjoy this hobby.” John and Rebecca quickly got involved and began attending brick swap meets. “Everybody backs their cars in a big circle. When the whistle goes off, everyone just starts swapping. There’s no money exchanged, just bricks,” Rebecca says. After five years of collecting, which also included canoeing the Ohio River and rummaging demolition sites in Cincinnati, John and Rebecca had enough bricks to construct a garden wall around

the back yard of their Newport home. The end result is a unique and interesting display of their collection. “These are all at least 100-year-old bricks,” Rebecca explains. “When they were made, the companies stamped a manufacturer’s name or seal on them, so no brick is plain.” For those interested in designing with antique bricks, Rebecca recommends mixing a variety of styles—from street pavers to regular building bricks. An antique brick collection could be used for garden walls, walkways, patios, mailboxes or planters. Two of Rebecca’s favorite bricks are from Russia. “We found several on a trip overseas, but it was challenging getting them home because our bags were already close to the weight limit,” she says. Although the Gilliams have finished their backyard walls, they continue to collect and swap bricks. “We’re saving these bricks from taking up space in a landfill somewhere. It’s reuse of a material, so I’m sure we’ll find other projects down the road where we can incorporate them,” Rebecca says. “Maybe we’ll do a patio next.” For more information on the International Brick Collectors Association, visit www.tlgwindpower.com/tweety/ continued >

landscape trends Out of the ashes Mike and Susan Whitehead’s back yard might be small, but they’ve worked diligently to pack it with personality. From the weathered mirror and planters displayed on the side of their garden shed, to the bubbling fountain resting in a bed of hosta, the Whitehead garden is full of charm and whimsy. Some of the most popular items actually came to the couple as discards. Susan was amused when her neighbor brought her an old gas fireplace insert he’d pulled out of his mother’s house across the street during renovation. “He said, ‘Here, have this. I know you like old stuff,’” Susan remembers with a laugh. “My husband and I do enjoy collecting old stuff and antiques, but I didn’t know what to do with the fireplace grid. It ended up sitting outside my house for a long time.” Susan found another gas fireplace insert during her own renovation. Now that she had a set, Susan decided to do something with the beautiful, old items to save them from being thrown away. “One of the gas fireplace inserts had a piece of asbestos in the bottom that I broke out,” she explains. “When I did, I realized there was enough room to plant something. The ironwork is so beautiful, and it just pops against the green of the asparagus ferns I planted.” Almost any item has the potential to be a planter as long as it’s deep and sturdy enough to support the plants inside. The most important part of planters is proper drainage. If an item doesn’t have holes in the bottom, a drill can be used to create drainage holes—no larger than a coin. Gravel or rocks can be used in the bottom of the container to provide additional drainage. “I will definitely continue to use the fireplace inserts as planters every year now that I know how well they’ve done and what a conversation piece they’ve become,” she says.

Divine design When Mary Lou and Richard Waits moved into their Newport home seven years ago, a lot of their stuff went into storage. They’d downsized from eleven acres to a lot with only two patches of soil—one along the front porch and one in the far back of the house. Mary Lou had to improvise when planning her garden, because the concrete between her house and her neighbor had run from brick to brick. “There was no place to have dirt, so we had to have a container garden,” Mary Lou explains. The end result is a quaint, terrace garden shaded by the height of the houses, trees and a vibrant, yellow umbrella over a unique eating area. An antique table and church pew are sheltered under the umbrella and provide Richard and Mary Lou with a perfect outdoor dining room right off their kitchen. Richard found the church pew at an auction before one of the Catholic churches in St. Bernard was renovated. “I used it by the fireplace in our old house, because our living room was so big,” Mary Lou explains. “When we moved, we put the pew in our son’s barn for storage. “Dick (Richard) was planning to build a sitting area outside our kitchen door, but I thought the pew would be nice,” she says. Richard used marine spar varnish to seal the pew after giving it a thorough cleaning. “When it rains, we just wipe it off,” he says. “It fits perfectly, it’s comfortable, and it’s something you don’t expect,” Mary Lou says. continued >

landscape trends Barrel of flowers Hanging from the trees like Christmas ornaments in Rachel Comte’s back yard are two luscious, unique, handmade hanging baskets. “I had no idea they would be such a big hit,” Rachel says of the hanging planters she constructed from whiskey barrel rings. “A lot of people on the Garden Walk told me I should start selling them.” She inherited a gardener’s garden when she bought her Newport home. The previous owner left thirty rose bushes planted in whiskey barrels in the garden. Rachel donated the roses to the Cincinnati Rose Society and began breaking the whiskey barrels down to recycle when she had an idea to keep the metal rings. “I guess I had seen something similar somewhere, so I called my dad who’s an ironworker to see if he thought we could construct a hanging planter,” Rachel explains. “I attached the two whiskey barrel rings the way I wanted and my dad ran a rod down the center to hold the weight of the plants.” Rachel purchased coco shell liners, made of the substance inside a coconut shell, to line her baskets. “I lined the inside of my coco shells with newspaper to help keep the moisture in the plants,” she recommends. “Then I ran floral wire around the liner a few times to keep everything in place.” Rachel finished the baskets off with begonias and creeping Jenny. A landscape architect herself, Rachel didn’t want her own garden to be formally planned out. “It’s kind of trial and error,” she says. “If something works, great. If not, it’s not a huge deal. Everything in my back yard is recycled. I didn’t plan it that way. It just happened.” Photos for this feature are from the 2010 East Row Garden Walk. Dates for the 2011 Walk are June 25 and 26. Cooking

Outside Is So IN! By Karen Bradner

Something magical happens when you cook food outside. Nothing illustrates that point more than the “Hobo Dinner” many of us prepared as children during summer camps or scout outings.

We chopped our

potatoes, place them in the middle of a square of aluminum foil. We threw in some ground beef, a bit of ketchup, a sliced carrot if someone other than kids were in charge, and perhaps added a bit of onion, salt and pepper. After sealing all the ingredients tightly in the foil, we threw the whole contraption on an open fire.

After waiting patiently for several minutes, we pulled the charred foil out of

the fire and burnt our fingers opening the package to discover the amazing transformation of a few simple ingredients into an incredible feast. It’s easy to get hungry just thinking about it.

Design tidbits from a pro Should you be considering an outdoor kitchen of your own, Russ Faulk, vice president of product development for Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet, suggests two areas to consider before you begin. Make sure you have enough counter space. This is an area which often gets shortchanged in the plans. You need plenty of room around the grill for dishes and serving plates. Faulk recommends you allocate counter space to each of the four functional zones of the kitchen—hot, cold, wet and dry prep. Lighting can be a challenge for year-round grillers

when it often gets dark before they’re ready to cook dinner. Have plenty of lights so that you can see what you are doing well after sunset. And if the appeal of sitting around a warm meal in the cool air with a few friends isn’t enough to inspire you, Faulk suggests that outdoor kitchens are a sound investment—on par with an indoor kitchen remodel when it comes to resale value. Ready to get started? Here are Housetrends’ staff picks for our favorite spots to roast, grill, or sample the fare out in fresh air. continued >

The lovely outdoor luncheon A luncheon, even outdoors, is typically a bit dressier than just a lunch or brunch so it’s the perfect way to celebrate Mother’s Day, a bridal shower or a baby shower. To make it more special, lose the paper products and go right to the good stuff. There’s something so decadent about using your best china and silver outdoors. Perhaps it’s that juxtaposition of the refined against the back drop of the not-so-refined nature of, well, nature. In any case, use your most beautiful dishes, stemware and silverware outside and see how they scream “Elegant! Extravagant! Ooh la la!” If china feels too high-brow for your gathering, then opt for wonderfully fun melamine dishes paired with coordinating acrylic drink glasses. Check out Pfaltzgraff.com for a variety of melamine and acrylic in colors and patterns that range from fun to sophisticated. If possible, hold more formal outdoor parties on solid ground such as brick or stone surfaces since guests will be dressed for the occasion. To create the perfect floral to finish your table, look no further than your yard. Flowering or fruiting branches are the perfect touch for an outdoor tablescape. If available, hosta or magnolia leaves also make a stunning table centerpiece when arranged in vases alone, or with other flowers. Serving your luncheon “buffet style” is completely appropriate, but for a more formal affair recruit family or teenagers to serve your guests at their tables. Whatever the occasion, get creative with menu items or decorations. For instance, if you’re throwing a baby shower, consider serving new potatoes, baby carrots or baby greens and print menu cards for each table so guests make the connection and marvel at your cleverness! For a Mother’s Day luncheon, honor your mother, mother-in-law and other moms in the family with a menu comprised of their special recipes and use their favorite flowers to decorate tables. Put the recipes together in a small booklet for everyone to take home and send the honored mothers home with the flowers.

Barbecues and buffets For Father’s Day or to celebrate a graduation, a casual barbecue is perfect. Even on Father’s Day Dad may want to “man the barbecue” so let him—he is the honored guest after all! To keep dad on task, assign someone as the food runner to take orders and deliver food to and from the grill.

up various food and drink stations to keep guests moving.

Keep it movin’ If yours is a large gathering, then use your food and drink stations to keep everyone circulating rather than congregating. Set up several bars and position them opposite the buffet. Create various food and drink stations that each offer something different, and you will automatically keep guests moving. For daytime parties especially, limit the menu to dishes that serve well at room temperature, such as vinegar based salads, grilled kebabs, beans and noodle dishes.

Light up the night Crank up the ambience for your evening party with warm firelight and fabulous aromas. Candelabras are the epitome of grand dining, but a collection of candlesticks on a silver tray will also do the trick. If you’d rather not use real candles, you can still enjoy the same warm light with battery-operated candles without the fear of fire and the mess of dripping wax. Strands of small clear lights woven through trees, shrubs and fences also add a marvelous glow. Plant fragrant blossoms around your patio and relish in their heady scent particularly at dusk. A few to consider: viburnum, jasmine, mock orange and passion vine. The fire pit has become a popular gathering place at outdoor parties so position one or several amongst seating, blankets and a supply of s’mores makings. Add a few sheets of familiar campfire songs to inspire the festivities. Encourage guests to clean up after themselves by strategically placing wellmarked garbage and recycling containers throughout the party. Photo by JE Evans

Wish I could do that If you’re not planning an outdoor party, but you would love an excuse to have one, build a party around a hobby or recreation you love to do with friends, such as:

✺ Junking and brunch If you and your friends are garage sale or junking junkies, hit the sales early then host brunch on the deck for everyone after. Your friends will love the opportunity to talk about all their deals and steals of the day so don’t be surprised if this becomes an annual event!

challenges make great party games for children and adults alike and range from pulling all the tissues out of a box in 60 seconds to stacking three golf balls on top of each other. There’s plenty of information available on-line (www.nbc.com/minute-towin-it) to give you an evening full of challenges. Look for ways to play off your game night through your menu too such as serving Minute Rice with Veggies.

✺ horticultural swap meet ‘n eat Treat this one like a holiday cookie exchange. Have each person bring a cutting from one of their perennials for each person invited to your Swap Meet ‘n Eat. Everyone goes home with several new plantings at virtually no cost. An herb exchange would also be a great theme for outdoor dining.

✺ “minute to win it” family night barbeque Host a family-style barbeque and night of hilarious games based on the TV show “Minute to Win It” where contestants are challenged to complete various tasks in 60 seconds. The

Ceiling Fans

You’ve come a long way, baby!

By Kelly Z. Clark Let’s be honest, ceiling fans have often posed a dilemma for those who want to be both style-conscious and practical in their homes. With a reputation for being unattractive and unsophisticated, yet highly practical and energy efficient, ceiling fans might be necessary but they don’t often get a lot of style points. Don’t sweat it, though, because the winds of change have blown in new ceiling fan styles that are worthy of being the focal point of any room.

Fan Museum photo courtesy of Fanimation

It all started when… The first ceiling fans in the U.S. were introduced in the 1860s and ran on a system of running water with a turbine. A few of these are still in use in the southern United States in restaurants and commercial buildings. Then in 1882 the first electric-powered fans were made from motors adapted from Singer sewing machines. By World War I, most ceiling fans were manufactured with four blades instead of the original two. Besides making fans quieter, this change allowed them to circulate more air, thereby making more efficient use of their motors. By the 1920s, ceiling fans had become commonplace in the United States, and had started to take hold internationally; however, during the Great Depression, ceiling fans were out of vogue in the U.S., and by the end of World War II ceiling fans had become almost non-existent, and remained that way into the 1950s. In the 1960s, some East Asian manufacturers started exporting their ceiling fans to the United States. They caught on slowly at first, and although they lacked style they found great success during the energy crisis of the late 1970s, since ceiling fans consume far less energy than air conditioning units. The rest is history, as they say, and you can see the entire history of ceiling fans and desk fans at the American Fan Collectors Association Museum. The museum is located at the Fanimation Company’s facility in Zionsville, Indiana,

and contains more than 450 antique ceiling and desk fans from over 140 manufacturers.

Styles that will blow you away Today, manufacturers are proving that the sky is the limit when it comes to high style in ceiling fans. The San Francisco ceiling fan by Minka Aire, characterized by the simplicity of its bold, clean lines, was the winner of design awards from the Chicago Athanaeum Museum of Architecture and the International Interior Design Association. The Artemis ceiling fan, which is available in nine colors, also makes a striking design statement with graceful and fluid blades that wrap around to form the housing of the fan. According to the Lumens.com Trend Watch, manufacturers are offering fans that are more versatile, accommodate small spaces, and range from two-bladed styles to modern Asian and beach-inspired designs. Colleen McCracken, director of merchandising for Lumens.com says, “We’re seeing a lot of two-bladed fans. They’re as efficient as a 4- or 5-bladed fan, and while it might seem that these are a more contemporary structure for a ceiling fan, they come in a lot of different styles.” For ultimate flexibility, the Multimax fan from Fanimation can be used with or without a light and easily changed from 2, 3 or 4 blades with reversible sides for a choice of finish. continued >

Big what?! For oversized foyers, lofts, conservatories and great rooms, the Isis from Big Ass Fans may be just the right fit. Big Ass Fans is the leading manufacturer of huge ceiling fans for industrial and commercial settings and offers Isis as their residential solution for rooms that need a “serious air moving machine.” The Isis is precision built using industrial components, and boasts a circulation rate equivalent to nine standard ceiling fans that can be felt from floor to ceiling and wall to wall, but at a monthly operating cost of less than pennies per day.

Torto by Fanimation

Airing it out Abby Mays, lighting consultant for Central Light in Cincinnati, says the majority of lighting plans for new homes built in Cincinnati include ceiling fans for the great room and master bedroom. She points to Minka Aire’s 3-blade Concept fan as one of the top choices by her customers for its transitional look and midrange price. For those who want a light kit on their fan, Abby offers this reminder: “The Department of Energy has regulated the wattage allowed on light kits to a maximum of 180 watts. This means that even if you decide to push the limit with higher wattage bulbs, light limiters have been placed on the light kits and automatically shut the light off when it exceeds the 180 watt limit. Some manufacturers are now offering fans with fluorescent lights to provide more lumens.”

Looking good at last It appears that ceiling fans not only have a long history, but they are also here to stay. To that end, manufacturers have gone to great lengths to provide consumers with incredible styles that could literally become the artwork that hangs from the ceiling. With options and styles so numerous, the choices in fans could make your head spin.

Upstairs Downstairs Historic House tour

By Margo Warminski, Preservation Director, Cincinnati Preservation Association (CPA) Photos by Robin Victor Goetz/RVGP Inc.

Five magniFicent Homes on grand vista avenue in Pleasant ridge will be Featured during tHe cincinnati Preservation association’s Historic House tour on saturday, may 7, 2011.

A GrAnd VistA historicAl Visit transportation built the “beautiful cincinnati residential suburb” of Pleasant ridge. First, an indian trail (ridge road). next, the montgomery turnpike. then, steam commuter railroads, electric interurban streetcars, and automobiles. Founded as a farming village in the 1790s, Pleasant ridge was incorporated in 1891 and annexed by cincinnati in 1912. | the 1920s were boom years for cincinnati, and the former village was growing rapidly. in the late 1920s the grand vista subdivision was platted: an upscale development of large homes on big lots. the street was laid out along a wooded ridge, shaded by huge old trees. it was built on the highest point in the neighborhood to take advantage of summer breezes and views of the millcreek valley. to maintain its exclusive character and cut down on traffic, it was not connected to any other streets. | during the late 1920s, stately residences were built in popular styles of the period: georgian revival, craftsman, tudor revival, dutch colonial, norman revival. most were conservative stylistically, with one starkly modern exception: a Prairie style residence. look for it on your walk through the neighborhood! | a home on grand vista was a token of success, and prominent business owners and professionals lived there. | over the years, the beautiful homes of grand vista avenue have been cherished by their owners. cPa is proud to share this cincinnati treasure with you. we hope you enjoy your visit. continued >

1 Walter Parry Dolle House

6331 Grand Vista aVenue | 1928 | GeorGian reViVal | roland e. Hunt, architect sponsors: Tim Jeckering Architects, Inc. & Carole Maloney-Donohue of Nancy Ross Interiors A grand Georgian Revival residence, the Dolle House is perched proudly on the Grand Vista ridge. It was built in 1928 for insurance agent Walter Parry Dolle (died 1948). His company is still in business today, under the name Walter P. Dolle Insurance, Inc. Elegant, symmetrical and formal, the faรงade has a central entrance, grouped double-hung windows, and gabled roof dormers. The gabled roof is covered with the original terra cotta tiles. At the rear is an original brick garage designed in harmony with the house. Lovingly preserved by the owners, the house is full of original features, including a grand staircase, rich woodwork, chandeliers, and step-mitered oak floors. Walnut pocket and French doors with leaded glass panels open to the living and dining rooms. The focal point of the living room is an exquisite art tile fireplace with floral accents. Floral murals by Newport artist Curtis Heuser brighten the dining and breakfast rooms. All the first- and second-story windows are original. They feature hand-blown cylinder glass, an ancient process leaving minor imperfections that add character. The owners have preserved and restored the windows, replacing broken panes with antique glass as needed. Custom storm windows, including curved glass units for the bow window, protect the glass and improve efficiency. With lots of operable windows and French doors front and rear, the house has ideal cross-ventilation. In fact, the owners typically use air conditioning only two weeks out of the year. The Dolle House was designed by Roland E. Hunt (-1957), a local architect about whom little has yet been learned. He practiced into the 1950s and maintained an office in Norwood.

Gustave A. and Emma Ginter House 6370 Grand Vista aVenue | 1925 | tudor reViVal style sponsor: Jenni McCauley of Sibcy Cline

The Ginter House offers a rare opportunity to see a house that has remained in the same family since it was built, preserved by three generations. It was built in 1925 for attorney Gustave A. Ginter (1876 - ?), of the firm of Nichols, Morrill, Wood, Marks and Ginter, and his wife, Emma. The original plans have remained with the house but do not include the name of the architect. The low, double-gabled faรงade is covered with brick and half-timbered stucco. It features grouped, square-pane casement windows and an arched oak batten door. At the south end of the faรงade is an original screened porch. The interior of the house has changed little since the 1920s, including a wealth of original details and furnishings. The floors, woodwork, and French doors are varnished oak. Walls are covered with a high-relief, combed finish, glazed with varnish. Ornate iron chandeliers and sconces are found throughout the house, along with terra cotta tile accents. Steam radiators provide heat. With large windows on three sides, the living room is filled with light. The focal point of the space is a limestone fireplace with carved frieze. The dining room includes a convenient window seat/radiator cover/storage unit, covered with tile. In the library is a cozy fireplace with Nile green tile voussoirs. Two major changes were made to the house in the 1980s: The kitchen was doubled in size, removing a pantry, and the former attached garage was converted to a family room. continued >

3 Victor A. and Blanche Gebhardt House 6433 Grand Vista aVenue | 1927 | tudor reViVal style | John henri deekin, architect sponsor: The Kroger Co.

Nestled in a hollow below Grand Vista Avenue, the “storybook Tudor” Gebhardt House is covered in rough stucco and half-timbering. Three graduated gables and a tall chimney with spiral flues dominate the façade. Neglected for years, the house underwent a top-to-bottom renovation that overcame water leaks, ruined plaster and wasteful heating. This adapted the house for modern living, while preserving original materials and adding new ones that resemble the old. The oak woodwork was refinished and the wood floors preserved. The steel casement windows were restored to working order, with magnetic interior storm sash added to save energy. Artifacts of Cincinnati broadcast history are on display in the sunken living room, which contains a brick fireplace and wood storage cabinet noted on original plans. The Tudor archway leading to the dining room is framed by stone. A c.1980 rear wing added a family room and doubled the size of the kitchen. The kitchen was fully renovated in 2001 with vintage-style wood cabinetry, leaded glass and retro hardware. Victor A. Gebhardt was president of The Gebhardt Brothers Company, diamond importers and wholesale jewelers. He also owned the historic Fountain Point Resort on Lake Leelanau, Michigan, which remained in the family for more than seventy years. Best known for traditional “English” designs like the Gebhardt House, architect John Henri Deekin (1888-1948) also created the striking Art Deco-style Coca Cola Building in Evanston. His best-known works include “Ambleside,” Marge Schott’s estate in Indian Hill, and the Mack House in North Avondale: both in the Norman Revival manner.

Emmons R. Booth House

6463 Grand Vista aVenue | 1907 | dutch colonial reViVal style sponsor: Keidel Appliances & Cabinetry “Dutch Colonial architecture is a much appreciated heritage from the dawn of our great Republic. Its everlasting and growing popularity is due in no small measure to its beautiful design, practical layout, spacious rooms and economy of upkeep.”—Sears, Roebuck Catalog of Houses 1926 The Booth House is the oldest on Grand Vista Avenue. It was built for Emmons R. Booth (1852-1934), an osteopathic physician, who resided here until his death. Dr. Booth served as president of the Ohio Osteopathic Association in 1910. The house was the centerpiece of a gentleman farm, so it was built to face surrounding orchards rather than the street. It is a spacious, center-hall Dutch Colonial residence, built of painted brick and frame. The gambrel roof—hallmark of the style—features semi-hexagonal dormers. A broad porch with arched spandrels extends across the façade. The oak door and sidelights have lozenge-shaped beveled glass accents. The house has a central-hallway plan, providing a convenient circulation pattern. Elliptical plaster archways open to the living and dining rooms. The painted woodwork features Greek Revival lintels and fluted pilasters. Floors are tongue-andgroove oak. Each room has windows on two or more sides for light and airflow. A Mission-style cherry staircase with square newel and tapered balusters, placed just off center, winds to the second floor. A triangular niche once held a statue. Upstairs, the hallway features a unique telephone niche with double shelf. A doorway opens to the second-floor porch. The master bathroom retains early 20th century polychrome tile. continued >

5 ruth House

6475 Grand Vista aVenue | 1928 | norman reViVal style | John henri deekin, architect sponsor: Legg Mason Investment Counsel This grand Norman Revival residence was built as the showplace of the new Grand Vista subdivision. Sited on the best lot on the street, it has a magnificent view of the valley below. The Ruth House was designed by architect John Henri Deekin, who created some of Cincinnati’s finest Tudor and Norman Revival residences. An outstanding example of the style, it features a circular “donjon” tower, elaborate halftimbering and stone ornamentation. No two windows are alike. The house was built of the finest materials: no expense was spared inside or out. The walls are laid in blocks that look like brick but actually are golden sandstone. Soft blue and gray slate covers the steeply hipped roof. The interior is lavished with rich, slightly eccentric ornament. The focal point of the entry is a spectacular spiral staircase winding through the tower, with iron railings. Decorative features include three Wheatley polychrome tile baths, each in a different colorway, with original Crane fixtures. Windows are steel casements. Hot water radiators provide heat. The basement holds a secret: a hidden speakeasy. In the entry hall, note the archways framed by stone voussoirs (blocks). The living room mantelpiece is framed by wood panels with grapevine carvings. Stained and carved wooden beams cross the ceiling. The French doors are overlaid with bronze grillwork and floral bosses. The original owners, the Ruths, lived in the home only briefly, then lost it in the Great Depression. Later owners included the Mashburn family, who owned Cincinnati’s Coca Cola franchise, and the Foy family, paint manufacturers.

Box Gutters should be repaired, not removed.

The Italianate style was introduced in the United States by Alexander Jackson Davis in the 1840s as an alternative to Gothic or Greek Revival styles. Italianate was reinterpreted again in the 1880s and became an indigenous style. It is distinctive by its pronounced exaggeration of many Italian Renaissance characteristics: emphatic eaves supported by corbels, low-pitched roofs barely discernible from the ground, or even flat roofs with a wide projection like this one.

Older homes, like this Italianate three story in Liberty Hill,

come back to life after their classic box gutters are restored. Keep the charm by maintaining the architectural detail of your home. Shawn Pfeil says, “Box gutters are beautiful and functional. All they need is a little love and care.” Jake’s Roofing takes great pride in offering you our complete box gutter restoration service.

Decking Decisions Tips for choosing and maintaining the right decking for your home By Danielle Krouse Decks have become an outdoor haven for countless homeowners, but choosing between natural hardwood and composite decking is a question many are faced with. Today, both options are more durable than ever, but to be sure your deck lasts as long as your home does, the right maintenance is always key.

Wood decking Wood is often what we think of when we picture a deck. And because warping, shrinking and swelling have always been concerns with this choice, a lot of maintenance also comes to mind. Fortunately, in recent years, exotic woods have become increasingly popular as well as more readily available. Other advantages to exotic species are durability and relatively easy maintenance. Ipe, a Brazilian species, is a popular decking choice because it is one of the most stable and durable timbers in existence. According to Timber Holdings International, home of Iron Woods products, Ipe dries extremely well with little checking, twisting or bowing. In addition to its strength, it has a natural resistance to decay and can be used in ground contact without preservatives or additional treatments. Other exotic species that make ideal decking options include Garapa, Cumaru, Tigerwood and Purpleheart.

Composite decking This non-wood choice of decking has been a popular option for well over a decade, due mainly because of the low maintenance involved. Composite decking doesn’t require sanding or painting and has only minimal staining requirements. Composite decking products are made primarily from a combination of wood or other cellulose fibers encased in synthetic material. Today the composite choice is offering more options than ever for homeowners, including a wide variety of tones and colors. This choice can even be an environmentally-friendly one.

“Consumers should know that Trex saves approximately 600 million pounds of plastic and wood scrap from landfills each year, and recycles about 1.5 billion plastic grocery bags,” says Adam Zambanini, senior product manager of decking for Trex. “Trex decking contains 95 percent recycled content, and the railing uses entirely reclaimed wood.” Although composite decking is a great alternative to natural wood, it should be noted that it is not completely maintenance free. All exterior building materials require some periodic cleaning. Homeowners can use composite deck cleaner at the time of installation as well as for semi-annual cleanings, typically in the spring and fall. Decks offer a great excuse to be outside whether you’re catching up on a good book, grilling dinner or just soaking up some sun. OPPOSITE: Ipe is an exotic hardwood that is excellent for decking due to its immense strength and durability. ABOVE: Composite decking is constantly evolving into stronger and more durable products. CENTER TOP AND BOTTOM: Mixing tones and colors of composite decking is a great look for an outdoor space.

At No Limits Landscaping, we strive to live up to our tag line: “Honesty, Great Quality, and Great Value... Guaranteed!” Another aspect inherent in our service is exceptional and functional design. We take pride in spending time during the initial consultation asking questions of the client in order to understand what they’re looking to achieve through the design of their space. We make sure they take everything into consideration, even the smallest detail. Our initial conversations lead to a creative and thoughtful design; meeting each and every one of the clients’ needs. Whenever designing a large outdoor living area like this project, especially when people have children, we like to create separate “rooms” on the patio vs. one large open “box” so that everyone has their own space. This can be created with the shape of the patio as well

Architectural rendering by Ben Jennings, Landscape Architect

as landscaping and/or hardscaping, such as a seat wall or pergola. This design features three main living areas. The pergola structure creates the first living area and is thoughtfully placed between the upper patio space and swimming pool. An outdoor fireplace feature screens the poor views to the southeast and serves as a backdrop for the second outdoor living area. The third area is highlighted by the outdoor bar and grill island. The location makes it convenient for both daily cooking activities and entertaining guests during parties. With each space having enough room to comfortably accommodate 4-8 guests, there is plenty of space for entertaining larger groups on a regular basis. Opposite the swimming pool, there is a seat wall large enough for 10 adults to sit comfortably. A fire pit is centered in

this space so that cool Spring and Fall evenings can be warmed and enjoyed. Ample room is provided for placing additional lounge chairs around the pool deck, as well as the fire pit area. As designed, this outdoor living space can accommodate “twice a year” parties hosting 30-40 guests. The landscaping on this project is very clean and colorful. The pear trees will give dense privacy well into the Fall behind the fireplace. The ‘Fat Albert’ blue spruce with the gold mop cypress in front will give that extra splash of color year round. The herb garden is over by the grill and close to the back door to quickly pick some fresh herbs while cooking dinner. The rose garden is on the end of the pool where they will get plenty of sun and give extra color in the Summer months

of using the pool. Pockets of annuals are planted throughout the landscape to give that extra burst of color all season. Let us show you what No Limits Landscaping can do with your ideas and our creativity and expertise.

YOU DON’T NEED A CEILING FAN You’ve got this spacious room with high ceilings. It’s too hot in the summer and too cool in the winter — no matter where you set the thermostat. So you think an ordinary ceiling fan will solve your problem, right? Wrong.

MOST PEOPLE GET A FAN FOR THEIR GREAT ROOM

A typical ceiling fan, with its small motor and fl at paddles, just isn’t going to cut it. You need a serious air moving machine… something that can circulate an ocean of air that can be felt from floor to ceiling and wall to wall.

YOU NEED A BIG ASS FAN

WHAT YOU NEED IS A GREAT FAN FOR YOUR BIG ASS ROOM

Isis® from Big Ass Fans is the world’s only ceiling fan engineered to improve circulation in large spaces such as foyers, lofts and great rooms. Its sweeping airfoil blades — shaped like aircraft wings — revolve slowly and quietly to produce gentle, but powerful currents of air that deliver consistent, energy efficient comfort year round. A single venti mocha cappuccino will set you back more than the monthly operating cost of an Isis... yet Isis does the work of more than nine standard ceiling fans.

QUIRKY NAME. SERIOUS FANS. For over a decade, Big Ass Fans has been engineering high performance air movement solutions for tens of thousands of satisfied industrial customers worldwide. Now, our patented technology is available for your home. Like all of our fans, Isis is engineered, precision balanced and hand built with aircraft-grade aluminum and industrial components right here in the USA. It looks great, operates silently and is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

TRY A BIG ASS FAN IN YOUR HOME FOR 90 DAYS. IF YOU DON’T EXPERIENCE BIG COMFORT, RETURN IT.

Choose standard Aluminum, premium Black, White, or Chestnut Brown, or custom matched colors.
