—sherri warshaw

This time of year, the falling leaves, cooling temperatures and colors of orange and gold are a sure sign it’s time for Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday. I love having family and friends gather in the kitchen to prepare recipes that we have accumulated over generations and then indulge. Yum! Young and old alike, everyone gets into cooking. I am going to share some of my favorites on our Facebook/Housetrends Cincinnati page. I hope you will too. Inside this issue you’ll meet three homeowners who all kick up their heels for their favorite holidays in their own ways. Sherri Warshaw gives herself almost a full year to prepare for the few cherished days around Thanksgiving that she spends with her immediate and “adopted” families. Check out a few of her over-the-top traditions that will give you the warm and fuzzies. We’ll also stop by two homes—one in Hyde Park and one in Indian Hill—that pull out all the stops when it comes to Christmas. Take a look and see if there is an idea or two you could borrow from them. Hosting or attending a holiday party? We share helpful tips in our section dedicated to seasonal entertaining including idea starters for invitations, hostess gifts, tablescapes and menus—including three great desserts. And since the shopping season will be in full swing in just a few days, we’ve included a great holiday gift guide. As we give thanks for our blessings this season, I want to say thanks to the team of great artists, writers and support staff who make Housetrends Cincinnati a great magazine. Next year will be our 10th anniversary and we look forward to sharing many more exciting new projects and trends with you. Happy Holidays from Housetrends!

SOAK IN STYLE

Discover today’s luxurious lot of bathtubs In 500 BC, citizens of Rome were encouraged to bathe daily, but typically the cleansing occurred in a public bath. Those few who were wealthy enough to afford a private bath enjoyed bathing themselves in a sort of an extravagant private pool. Flash forward a few thousand years: it’s now time to treat yourself like a Roman emperor and enjoy one of these lavish soaks.

G ING PUBLIC Authentic English pub revealed in Anderson Township By Karen Bradner | Photos by Greg Grupenhof

IN regions of British influence, a

public house, informally known as a pub, is a drinking establishment licensed to serve alcoholic drinks. Apparently, that influence has jumped the pond and landed stateside in the basement of one expatriate and the self-proclaimed Anglophile he married. | Anderson residents, Michelle and Kevin Bevan, have painstakingly transformed their standard, new construction style basement—concrete floors, steel support beams, unfinished walls and ceilings— into an unbelievably authentic and charming English style pub reminiscent of a cozy refuge found in a country inn in the Cotswolds. continued >

Wooden cutouts from a fox hunt scene and a collection of horse brasses are displayed on the mantle in the hearth room. LEFT: The British experience begins as soon as feet hit the stairs leading to the lower level. OPENING SPREAD: The bar was purchased locally, but the decorative reverse cut glass adorning it came from England.

When all was said and done, the floor plan was drawn to house an

entry/drawing room; a pub area; a wine tasting room; ladies and gents rooms; a hearth room; and a hidden room which conceals a workout area.

Ties to the Union Jack After spending his childhood in England, where his father, David Gilroy-Bevan, was a member of Parliament, Kevin moved to this country in 1976, but thirty-plus years later, his heart still has strong emotional and family ties to his homeland. The couple travels to England twice a year, typically spending three weeks in June and the month of October there. Often, during past visits, the two would frequent their favorite pub, the Red Lion, built in 1752 and tucked away in the Mayfair section of London. It was this pub which would inspire the transformation of the lower level of their current home.

Beginning with the bar Knowing the direction they were headed, Kevin and Michelle started things off by purchasing an elaborate mahogany bar from the Wooden Nickel that was built using antique pieces—some over 100 years old. That was five years ago, before the couple had any plans finalized for transforming the concrete floors and walls into a British getaway. “I’m glad we didn’t start on the basement immediately after we moved in,” says Kevin. “It gave us time to plan things properly.” And plan things they did. Both husband and wife, who describe themselves as “anal-retentive idiots,” knew this transformation would be a monumental task.

26 housetrends.com

Once they were comfortable moving forward, the couple contacted the team at Neal’s Design-Remodel, a firm which Kevin’s research discovered to be quite capable of doing the calibre of work he needed. “This was not going to be just your everyday finished basement,” Kevin says. “ We knew we wanted something out of the ordinary. We didn’t want the standard pool table or big screen TV.” Instead of a singular unisex bathroom, Kevin wanted both a ladies’ room, and a gents’ room with a urinal “like a proper pub.” The floor of this man-space is adorned with a Union Jack inspired rug, and the walls provide reading material in the form of bawdy cartoons by Mark Huskinson, an artist whose humorous work, some say, has done as much for the loos of Britain, as Michelangelo has done for the Sistine Chapel. Another authentic detail the couple required concerned the lighting. “The electrician wanted canned lights in the space,” Michelle says. “I said, ‘not one single canned light. It would all be sconces and lamps.’” When all was said and done, the floor plan was drawn to house an entry/drawing room; a pub area; a wine tasting room; ladies and gents rooms; a hearth room; and a hidden room which conceals a workout area. Dimensions for this space were supplied to The Hidden Door Company, a northern-California based business, whose craftsmen built a secret doorway which swings out

from a wall of handsome bookshelves to reveal a well-equipped home gym. “All the old manor houses have hidden rooms,” says Kevin.

A likely pair “Even before meeting Kevin,” Michelle says, “I knew that I liked a certain look. I called it ‘the heavy look’ where there are a lot of things going on. Fringe. Tassels. Opulence. I couldn’t stick a label on it until I went to England for the first time.” So when it came time to furnish the space, Michelle knew precisely what she wanted. She remembers admiring the contents of Janice’s at The Saltbox in Lexington while she was attending the University of Kentucky. The 30-year-old business, which deals primarily with furniture that is made in England, is owned by Andra Gyor and her parents. “Michelle came to the shop with floor plans,” Gyor says. “She wanted to create the English look.” When asked to describe the English look, Gyor says, “English never looks new in my eye. It’s always warm, comfortable, and well made-almost like your favorite pair of shoes. Something you’ll have forever.” “We saw eye to eye immediately,” Michelle says. “And if I have any advice to give it’s that: ‘Find a decorator who is on the same page as you.’”

During that first meeting, Michelle bought most of the furniture and selected all of the fabric. “It was overwhelming, but really fun,” she says. The English fabric, which sets the rich color palette for the space, was discontinued, so the two decided to buy every inch of it.

More is better “In England, it’s very fussy,” says Gyor. “It’s everything that you love put together in a balanced way. More is better.” Fortunately, the Bevans already had more than enough when it came to decorative accessories. Both like to scour the shops and had fun pulling together the props which would help produce a proper pub. “My dad used to drag me with him to antique shops,” Kevin says. “This whole process rekindled childhood memories.” Kevin and Michelle had collected hundreds of wonderful English pieces including original artwork, Toby mugs, Staffordshire dogs, and small statues of famous Brits like Winston Churchill. “We had Toby mugs under the bed, and in closets and cabinets all over the house,” says Michelle. FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: A hallway leads to the gents’ room on the right, and the ladies’ room on the left. Separate but equal: a wine room provides a cozy retreat for those who prefer the grape. A fullyequipped kitchen is accessed from a doorway behind the bar.

Cask Ale

A FOCUS ON THE FIR K IN Since the Bevans’ basement focuses on the pub, it is only fitting that their pub focuses on the beer. In true British style, Kevin decided to equip his bar with a cask conditioned hand pump. Though they are common in pubs across England, they’re a bit of a novelty in the States. ❙ When it came time to install the apparatus, Kevin enlisted the help of Tony Shaw, bar manager at Nicholson’s Tavern & Pub. Nicholson’s has this type of pump installed at their bar, and the crew there was more than happy to assist their loyal customer. ❙ “Kevin brought us on board to help keep things as authentic as possible,” Shaw says. Here are the basics Shaw shares about the cask conditioning method: ■ Traditionally, beer in the U.S. is pasteurized, keeping it sustainable for longer periods of time. Think of milk after Louis Pasteur. ■ Cask ale is the most traditional method for dispensing beer. It uses active yeasts that have not been pasteurized therefore have a short shelf life. ■ The ale is served from the cask at a temperature of 45 to 50 degrees—a bit warmer than most beers are served here. ■ Beer casks come in a number of sizes, but by far the most common in the pub trade are those of 9 gallons (72 pints or roughly 41 liters) which is known as a Firkin. ■ The length of time the beer can last in the cask will depend on the nature of the beer itself: unopened, stronger beers can last for months; light, delicate beers need to be tapped and consumed in as quickly as two weeks. Just in case this is making you thirsty for a pint of your own cask ale, Kevin’s favorite brews include Brew Dog from Scotland and Hard Core IPA.

28 housetrends.com

Moving day The Neal’s construction crew began their work in March of 2008 and finished that September. “The quality and finish of what Neal’s was able to deliver to us is incredible,” Kevin says. “They took our vision and transferred it to reality.” Just before leaving to spend their customary month of October in England, the Bevans placed their prizes and ABOVE: Michelle picks up these purchases so that the space Toby mug collectibles during visits would be completely outfitted to England and on E-bay. before they returned home in time to celebrate the uniquely American tradition, Thanksgiving. One obvious placement was hanging a memento, from the pub that started it all, in the restroom wing. “The Red Lion is closed now,” Kevin says. “When Michelle and I found out, we paid a bloke to get inside the building, before it was gutted, and take the Ladies’ and Gents’ signs.” By the look of things today, that investment, along with the couple’s considerable attention to detail paid off. When they come down the stairs of their traditional, but newly built home, Michelle says, “We literally feel like we are in England.” Looking from the flagstone on the floor, to the aged beams on the ceiling, to the plate rail that runs the perimeter chock-full of collectibles, it’s easy to see why Kevin and Michelle feel this way. It’s also easy to understand why, when she comes for a visit, Michelle’s mom says, “I wouldn’t want to clean this place.” But luckily, she doesn’t have to. All she needs to do is kick off her shoes, pull up a chair and ask her son-in-law to pour her a pint. Editor’s note: Neal’s Design-Remodel earned a 2010 National Contractor of the Year award from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) for their work with the Bevans’ renovation.

A Recipe for Thanks iving Fun

g

Start with family, add some friends, sprinkle with humor By Peg Ashbrock | Photos by Joe Wieland Hosting family Thanksgiving celebrations at your home can be a daunting task for some, but Blue Ash homeowners Sherri and Steven Warshaw find it a labor of love. ✦ “Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday,” says Sherri. “It brings families together and it’s not a commercialized day.” ✦ Originally from New York and Chicago respectively, Steven and Sherri met and married while living in Miami, and relocated to Blue Ash in 1986. Five years ago they built what Sherri calls her dream home—a contemporary with traditional touches which backs up to the Sharon Woods Golf Course.

OVERLEAF LEFT: The sweet potato casserole is a family favorite. Steve and Robin were nice enough to share the recipe with Housetrends’ readers. OVERLEAF RIGHT: The front porch provides a quiet respite from the festivities. ABOVE: The kitchen’s oversized island serves as buffet central for the Thanksgiving dinner. TOP RIGHT: The homeowners carefully preserved as much of the wooded and wildness of the site as they built. BOTTOM RIGHT: A hot tub and firepit allow the family to extend the season outdoors.

42 housetrends.com

Nestled

into the gently sloping natural ridge of land, the home seems comfortable in its location. A buffer zone eases the transition between the natural wooded area and the manicured areas closer to the home. “I tried not to change the wildness of the site when we began the design because it was one of the things we loved about the location,” explains Sherri. Responsible for most of the exterior design which she maintains primarily with occasional landscape help, Sherri is proud of that fact and points out the home has won the City of Blue Ash’s Beautification Award three times—including Mayor’s Choice, and People’s Choice twice in the last 5 years—including 2010. With its partially wooded site, the home is at its best in autumn, and turns on a colorful display just in time for the family’s Thanksgiving celebrations. Both front and back access feature hardscapes such as a series of carved steps, stone seats, porches and patios as well as a floral display of perennials and annuals. The back raised patio offers an outdoor fireplace, a putting green and a fabulous sculpture “Robin” named after the couple’s daughter.

Creating family traditions Each year the Warshaws partner with close friends, the Greenfields, and create new traditions. “We met 34 years ago in Miami,” Sherri says. “They are like family.” Sherri had these holiday guests and traditions in mind when she was working on the home’s design. “Any house that works on Thanksgiving will work every other day,” is her belief. “We actually designed this home with Thanksgiving in mind, adding a bigger kitchen with an island that can seat 16, extra bedrooms, and choosing furnishings that turn into extra sleeping.” continued >

housetrends greater cincinnati 43

44 housetrends.com

Steven designed the home’s lower level for big groups with grasscloth covered walls, games, a media center and lots of seating. At the Warshaws’ the party isn’t just for Thanksgiving Day; it lasts all weekend long with shopping, a boat trip on the Ohio River, watching sports and generally enjoying each other’s company. Sherri starts preparing for Thanksgiving a long time in advance, sometimes she says, just after the holiday ends each year. “Most people give gifts for Christmas or Hanukkah,” Sherri explains. “I give them for Thanksgiving. I personalize a basket for every guest. I guess you could say it’s my year-long hobby.” Her kids jokingly call it “Spa Warshaw.” Each year’s basket includes a clothing item that gets embroidered with the Warshaw family logo. Yes, you guessed it. Sherri created it years ago and it’s since been embroidered on hoodies, workout shirts, vests, and snuggies, as well as towels and linens.

Attention to detail That focus that can be found in Sherri’s Thanksgiving décor as well. Thanksgiving is a holiday often passed over in the decorating arena as we move from Halloween directly into the Christmas or Hanukkah season. Yet many designers claim the season as one of their favorites, saying they can’t wait to decorate because of the wonderful color palette fall offers. Traditionally fall colors include burnt orange, mustard yellow, olive green and rust red, but browns and other earthy and harvest-hued colors all have their place in fall’s color palette. Sherri’s home reflects those colors, perhaps most intensely in the dining room. A stunning hand-carved wall unit housing a bar becomes one of her decorating focal points. Turkeys collected over the years as the Warshaws traveled top the unit. Backlighting highlights her Thanksgiving themed carvings, made by a local Indiana artist, that are featured at the holiday. Sherri’s collection is large and includes hand-carved birds, pumpkins, and pilgrim figurines. Each year she adds a new collectible. Parts of her extensive salt-and-pepper shaker set are showcased here as well.

OPPOSITE: A sculpture by Allen Wynn, from the Malton Gallery, is named after the couple’s daughter. ABOVE TOP: Topping the dining room is a custom-made Swedish chandelier of stainless steel set with tiny halogen bulbs that when lit look like tree branches reflected on the ceiling. ABOVE BOTTOM: Steven had a hand in designing the lower level for large gatherings.

continued >

housetrends greater cincinnati 45

Sherri’s Thanksgiving decorating is subtly carried throughout the house. A half-bath includes seasonal florals and linen; the great room with its floor-to-ceiling fireplace is accented with throws, holiday pillows and more of Sherri’s collections. The décor spills over into the kitchen, where Chef Steven orchestrates the holiday. He starts the day with his signature Baked French Toast Casserole with maple syrup, and Cowboy Brunch Quiche. The Warshaw menu for dinner includes a 25 lb. turkey, turducken (a dish consisting of a de-boned chicken stuffed into a de-boned duck, stuffed into a de-boned turkey), beef tenderloin, mashed potato casserole, sourdough bread stuffing, mashed maple bourbon sweet potatoes, traditional green bean casserole with béchamel sauce, and finishes with Grandma’s apple pie and their daughter-in-law’s praline pumpkin torte. Sherri serves appetizers on her leaf plate collection, and dinner on her Thanksgiving china. “I like to look back and remember where I collected each piece,” she says. Steven and Sherri collect from wherever they travel, including glassware featured in their home from Murano, Venice, Stockholm and Tahiti, along with natural, organic art and sculpture. “I really have fun making my family and guests feel special,” Sherri says. And it shows, making a perfect recipe for Thanksgiving fun. TOP: Left to right: Robin Warshaw (daughter), Brandon Warshaw (son), Ariel Warshaw (daughter-in-law), Anna Greenfield, Russell Greenfield, Steve Warshaw, Susan Greenfield (mom of Greenfield kids), Sherri Warshaw, Adam Greenfield, Rachel Caldes (Adam’s friend), Kris Liu (Jeff’s friend), Jeff Warshaw (son), Allison Greenfield. ABOVE: An embroidered item is a staple in the yearly family gift baskets. OPPOSITE: The striking vanity in the first floor powder room was custom designed for the homeowners.

Family-friendly Hyde Park beauty Inside this stunning Hyde Park home you’ll find an elegant shabby-chic motif with a thread of eclectic, sophisticated and personal holiday decor running throughout. Christmas trees are an integral piece of the puzzle for the homeowners. A children’s tree is filled with homemade ornaments from the kids throughout the years, while a family tree includes fragile ornaments as well as an ornament from each place the homeowners have traveled. The homeowners’ most prized holiday tradition is the annual cutting down of the trees. “Each year for the past 18 years our family, along with close friends, have gone the weekend after Thanksgiving to cut down our trees,” the homeowner says. “Each year we find a different tree farm and some years it’s been bitter cold, while others we’ve been in shorts. We love to bake cookies and decorate gingerbread houses that we put on display (and eat the whole month long).” Interior designer Barbara Greve, owner of Details, It’s All Inside, works closely with the homeowner on the direction of the decor. This year’s theme was traditional mixed with a bit of nature. Natural elements such as dried hydrangea, greenery, magnolia and pine cones worked beautifully in the home’s screened porch as well as for outdoor decor. continued > OPENING SPREAD: Interior designer Barbara Greve used square boxwood wreaths on the doors to the screened porch. Inside, using a palette of lime green and coral pink added a bit of whimsy to the traditional red and green holiday colors. Greve made sure to incorporate orchids into the design because the homeowner raises them. “We introduced white orchids in the main entry in a setting of silver mercury glass,” says Greve. “This added a new twist, instead of using poinsettias in every fresh display.” Greve decided to use square boxwood wreaths instead of traditional round ones on the doors leading to the screened porch. She also incorporated the homeowners’ cherished heirlooms for a one-of-a-kind design. “It was important that the home keep a very classic and sophisticated style and that nothing was too overdone.” continued > OPPOSITE: The shabby-chic living room gets a holiday makeover complete with stockings over the fire. ABOVE LEFT: A variety of floral arrangements are used throughout the house, including plenty of pink poinsettias. RIGHT: Yet another tree can be found in the family room, where the family spends the majority of their time.

Glamorous Indian Hill haven The homeowner of this phenomenal Indian Hill home looks forward to creating a winter wonderland with her daughters every time December 1st rolls around. The decor started out with a theme of snowmen, which the homeowner collects, and eventually evolved into trees, each with their own personality. “We used to travel for two weeks every winter break to ski, so little time was spent holiday decorating, but for the past four years we have been at home with family and friends, and have loved making our home special for this time of year,” says the homeowner. Interior designer Sally Waxman, of The Silky Way, has been working with the homeowner since the construction stages of the house and she feels she understands the homeowner’s taste and how important the holidays are to her and her family. When it comes to choosing new designs for holiday decor, Waxman says she and the homeowner are almost always on the same page. “She [the homeowner] knows what she likes, so when I call her to come see something, it’s an immediate yes or no, although I have to say it’s never really been a no,” says Waxman. Because the homeowner loves horses, an equestrian tree was created in her library. It adds a bit of character because it has children’s horse riding sticks tucked into the tree, which also includes more traditional equestrian themed ornaments. continued >

ABOVE LEFT: The equestrian tree sits in the homeowner’s library and expresses her love of horses. TOP: Straying from the typical red and green allows for a modern pop of color. ABOVE: The “Rodeo Drive” tree is the newest in the homeowner’s collection and was a gift for her daughters.

On a more sophisticated and elegant note, the tree in entry hall is titled “Champagne and Haute Chocolate.” It features pearl essence calla lilies, feathers and chocolate stems. The newest tree in the house is the “Rodeo Drive” tree, which was a gift from the homeowner to her daughters. It is decked out with ipods, cell phones, lipstick and shoe ornaments. “It’s everything girlie,” says Waxman.

What kind of shindig is this, anyway? The level of formality you want the party to evoke will help form much of the decision-making you need to do. Therefore, establish upfront if you’re having a formal affair or keeping it more casual and let that be your guide as you pull together the details. For example, for a more formal party, consider sending invitations by postal mail and complementing them with matching printed menus, place cards and thank you notes, creating a more sophisticated event. For a less formal party use an online service such as e-vite.com to email invites to your guests. If you’re an invited guest, be sure to respond to party invitations by the requested RSVP date.

At every party there are two kinds of people—those who want to go home and those who don’t. The trouble is, they are usually married to each other.

—Ann Landers Photo by Mike Stutler

What’s on the menu? Regardless of the style of your party, formal or casual, it is generally easier and less expensive to serve a few appetizers followed by a meal, rather than prepare a large menu of appetizers to serve guests for an entire evening. The number of ingredients needed and the time required to prepare enough variety can make an appetizer-only menu a costly option. Instead, consider serving two to three appetizers followed by a dinner of salad with Gorgonzola cheese and blackberry pear vinaigrette, beef Wellington with red wine demi-glace and sliced potatoes with goat cheese. (Visit housetrends.com for recipes). As a rule of thumb, most adults will nibble six to seven appetizers an hour during the first two hours, and half that amount after that. Also, guests will generally eat about ten percent less at the main meal when appetizers are served beforehand. Round out your menu by offering a wine selection that complements your menu. Terms such as weight, aroma and intensity are often bandied about by wine experts so here’s a quick lesson in pairing the appropriate wine with food. Balance is the goal, so neither the food nor the wine should dominate the other. Therefore, match the commanding taste of intense wines with robust meals. Weight is simply a measure of the viscosity or thickness of the wine so serve heavy wines with rich foods and lighter wines with lighter dishes. Matching aromas is not a big concern, but try to pair aromatic foods with aromatic wines. For an alternative to wine see housetrends.com for a seasonal Cranberry Slush recipe that can be offered with or without alcohol. continued > Photo by Daniel Feldkamp/Visual Edge Imaging

Creating a decorated table to showcase your meal, or “tablescaping” as it is often called, can be fun if you’re a creative type or stressful if not. Whether you plan to sit guests down to a formal meal with place settings, or provide a more casual buffet dinner, your table can easily look festive and seasonal. Setting a beautiful table doesn’t require expensive dishes. Give your white bone china table settings an updated look by swapping out just the matching salad plates and replacing them with inexpensive amber, green or purple clear glass plates. Repeat the color in other elements of the table such as napkins, a table runner or placemats to unify the finished look. You may want to incorporate the color onto your invitations and menu cards also. If natural elements are more your style, cover your buffet table with butcher block paper and add a plaid winter scarf or piece of burlap fabric for texture. Place serving dishes of food on a small sled in the center of the table or fill pairs of ice skates with greens for a simple center piece. Don’t underestimate the simple beauty of fresh greens such as magnolia, boxwood or evergreen branches and cleverly arranged fruits such as figs, grapes, pears, persimmon and pomegranate to provide just enough timeless beauty and color to your table. Or consider displaying pots of Narcissus Tazetta, or “paper whites.” Paper whites are fragrant indoor plants for winter and the holiday season, and forcing them to bloom is as easy as putting the bulbs in water with stones or marbles to anchor them in place. The fragrant flowers bloom within about 3 weeks of planting. For extra elegance, lay framed mirrors in the center of your table and set the pots of flowers on top. continued >

Music for your party is a must, so give thought to what your guests will enjoy most, and don’t just turn the radio on and allow whatever is being played to determine the mood of the evening. Create your own music mixes on your MP3 player or use an online music library such as goodnoise.com where you’ll find over 9 million song selections. Turn on the music before your party begins so it feels festive when the first guest arrives, and make sure it isn’t too loud so guests of all ages can converse comfortably. Good background music should not be too invasive or have abrupt transitions that are distracting. Generally, best-of compilations and movie soundtracks work well because they flow well into one another.

temptations Cake 3 cups flour 1¾ cup sugar ⅓ cup poppy seeds ¾ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon baking powder 1 cup butter, melted 1 cup buttermilk 4 large eggs, room temperature 2 tablespoons finely grated lemon zest 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Glaze 1 cup sifted powdered sugar 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

POTOMAC POUND CAKE 8 ounces butter 3 cups sugar 6 whole eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup sour cream 3 cups all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt Cream room temperature butter on high until fluffy. Add sugar until well blended. Add room temperature eggs one at a time to incorporate, scraping down the sides of bowl frequently. Add vanilla. Measure flour before sifting. Then sift dry ingredients together in a bowl and add to butter, sugar and egg mixture, alternating with sour cream. Then beat batter for ten minutes on medium speed. Bake for 1 hour at 350°F. Makes three one-pound loaf pan pound cakes. After cakes are cool, dust tops with powdered sugar. Great variations: Cranberry Tangerine Pound Cake: Add zest of 1 orange, ½ teaspoon of tangerine oil (this is optional) and 1½ half cups of fresh or 1 cup of dried cranberries to the recipe after it is beaten. Preheat oven to 325°F. Grease Bundt pan with butter. Sift together flour, sugar, poppy seeds, salt, baking soda and baking powder in large mixer bowl. Whisk together butter, buttermilk, eggs, lemon zest and vanilla in small bowl. Beat egg mixture into dry ingredients until smooth. Pour batter into prepared pan and place in center of oven. Bake 55 to 60 minutes or until knife inserted into center of cake comes out clean. Remove cake from oven and allow to cool for 30 minutes before turning out onto cooling rack. Meanwhile, combine powdered sugar

and lemon juice with a whisk. Pour over warm inverted cake. Allow to cool before serving.

SNOwMAN CAKE POPS 1 box of white cake mix 1 16-ounce can white frosting 2 pounds white candy melts 20 lollipop sticks 1 box fruit roll-ups edible ink markers black candy writer carrot sprinkles red m&ms Cook cake as directed on box and cool completely, trim off sides and bottom (they tend to discolor the white balls) and crumble into large bowl. Mix crumbles thoroughly with a little less than ½ can frosting, with a large spoon or your hands. Should be the texture of play-doh when completely mixed together. Add more frosting if necessary. Roll mixture into quarter-size balls and place on wax paper-covered cookie sheet. For the snowman heads, roll balls slightly smaller than the body. One box of cake mix will make approximately 20 snowmen. Chill balls for several hours to firm. For decorating instructions, go to housetrends.com. Search: Sweet Temptations.

BITTERSWEET CHOCOLATE TART WITH RASPBERRIES 10.6 ounces Green & Black’s Organic Baking Chocolate, finely chopped 1 cup heavy cream ⅔ cup lowfat milk 1 large egg and 1 egg yolk, lightly beaten

1 tablespoon vanilla extract ¼ teaspoon sea salt 1 pre-baked 10-inch sweet tart shell 2 cups whipped cream 1 pint fresh raspberries

Preheat oven to 350°F. Place chopped chocolate in a large metal bowl over a simmering saucepan of water to start melting. Meanwhile, heat cream and milk until hot but not boiling. Whisk hot milk mixture into melting chocolate until all chocolate is melted and smooth. Remove from heat and set aside. In another large bowl, whisk together eggs, vanilla and salt then continue to whisk as you gradually add the chocolate mixture. Pour filling into prepared crust. Bake tart until filling is almost set in center about 20 minutes. It will firm up more after coming out of the oven. Transfer to rack and let cool 15 minutes. Remove outer ring of pan and serve tart warm with whipped cream and fresh raspberries.

From Hotel to Home Mt. Lookout homeowner recreates favorite hotels in lower level getaway

By Sarah J. Dills | Photos by Robin Victor Goetz, RVGP Inc. While most people enjoy traveling, one Mt. Lookout homeowner pulled double duty for two-and-a-half years—vacationing and collecting design ideas for her lower level construction project. ✦ “Every time we vacationed, I took pictures of lobbies,” the homeowner explains of her design inspiration. “I love hotels—from the grand elements like wood and tile, to the lush details of fabric and light fixtures.” continued >

From file to foundation The homeowner collected quite a file folder, or drawer, of ideas— pictures, magazine tear sheets and notes—in the two-and-a-half years between the time her family bought their home and the time they were ready to begin construction on their lower level. “I wanted something comfortable, but more contemporary,” the homeowner says of the entertainment area she hoped to create. The homeowner looked at three houses while shopping for a home with her husband in the Mt. Lookout area. The C.D. Brandenburg Custom Homes spec house that would ultimately become the place where their family expanded to include two children was built into a hill. Because of its situation on the hill, the lower level had to be constructed as a bi-level with twelve-foot ceilings in some areas. “The lower level really sold me on the house,” the homeowner explains. “I knew I had a project on my hands, and I couldn’t wait to get to work.” continued >

furnishingtrends Hart of the details When the homeowners were finally ready to begin building their lower level, they knew exactly who to call. “Tim Hart did two of our best friends’ homes, and I was really impressed with his work,” the homeowner says. The bi-level floor plan of the lower level lent itself to creating the perfect entertainment area and hotel lobby vibe that the homeowner wanted to create. At the base of the staircase from the main level of the home, guests can choose to turn left or right. Through the doorway to the left, children can enjoy a “kidsonly zone” where parents don’t have to worry about their little ones getting into anything undesirable. Toys and books can be pulled off the custom shelves, designed and built by Hart, and the mayhem is contained to its own space if the homeowners are too busy to clean up in the middle of a get-together. While the children are safely enjoying their playroom, the adults are only steps away in a sunken bar/pub area. Contemporary, white bar stools and pendant lights pop against the rich, dark cabinetry and wood trim. The pub is deceiving, because behind the bar sits a full kitchen complete with a microwave, dishwasher, sink and full-sized refrigerator. From the bar area, guests can decide if they would like to play a game of pool up a small flight of stairs or watch a movie in the home theatre/living room down the hall. A bathroom and a complete home gym round out the family’s lower level.

Family first “We have a huge family,” the homeowner says of some of her usual party guests. “My husband’s side of the family was here for Thanksgiving this year, and the space downstairs was great.” The floor plan of the lower level is conducive to entertaining. A circular path is created around the staircase, so people can easily mingle at the bar and enjoy a game of pool while keeping an eye on the kids. If people want to escape to a quiet place, the theatre/ living room is removed a bit by a partial wall—yet still accessible through a large, arched opening. The comfortable, curved couch is the perfect place for quiet conversation or a cozy, family movie night. “We watch all of our movies downstairs,” the homeowner explains. Whether the family is entertaining for the holidays or enjoying a quiet family night alone, they are sure to be taking pleasure in their cozy, contemporary lower level. Who says you have to leave home to take a vacation?
