a letter from the editor
I tend to live in the past because most of my life is there. —Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Herb Caen
’’
Maybe it’s because I’m about to celebrate a milestone birthday, but as I write this letter, I find the two styles we are showcasing in this issue—mid-century and contemporary—are symbolic of the crossroads in which I find myself. As someone who was born in the sixties, I grew up with shag carpet, avocado appliances, turquoise walls and dinette sets. They were nothing special to me at the time (except I did treasure my lava lamp). I imagine I was not the only baby boomer to grow up and buy my first house only to rip up the wall-to-wall carpet and plop an overstuffed couch on an area rug in my living room. But, these days, when I’m out with my friends at a flea-market and I find a certain style of heavy green drinking glass or almost anything turquoise, I want to take them home with me. I seem to crave the physical reminder of my childhood. Then my future ideal pops into mind. In the future, I am going to build on my mid-century roots but streamline things a bit. My new style will lean toward contemporary with sleek kitchen cabinets and wide-open expanses of countertops. Everything will be understated. I will appear (and in my dreams, be) completely under control. The only problem is, I think I’ll need to replace weekend flea markets with a new pastime. Right now, the past me and the future me seem to be meeting somewhere in the middle. But if you fall into one camp or the other, or even both, take a look at the mid-century treasures and crisp contemporaries inside these pages. Maybe while you’re doing that, I’ll start my transformation off slowly and clean out a The Linch family in 1963: kitchen drawer or two. Standing: Brian, David, Gary; Seated: Karen, Jay, Ellen

Clockwise from left: On the kitchen backsplash, irridescent glass tiles shimmer and contrast with matte black granite countertops. The home’s exterior gives no hint of what awaits inside. Contemporary hardware adds a stylish statement to the dining room display case. A sole piece of moveable furniture—a sectional sofa—keeps the minimalistic philosophy alive in the living room.
More to the story In the national and international circles of art dealers who know about these things, Don Treadway is known as an expert in the field of 20th Century Decorative Art. His Treadway Gallery specializes in American ceramics, metalwork, lighting and furniture including Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. In the late eighties, 1950s/Modern pieces were added to the repertoire. It was that expansion that triggered Don’s appreciation of the clean uncluttered lines of contemporary design.
Drive by sighting Until three years ago, Don and Kim lived in a Spanish Arts and Crafts style Hyde Park home with exposed beams, intricate woodwork and heavy fixtures that married well with their collection of Stickley and Arts and Crafts pieces. Then, while driving through the adjacent neighborhood of Mt. Lookout, a real estate sign caught Don’s eye. The home sat on a private 1½-acre lot and looked to Don like something you’d see in Idaho, Montana or Wyoming. continued >

When Don arranged for a tour, he was in for a surprise. “I assumed the interior would match the exterior,” Don says. “When I got a look inside, it just blew me away.” Two factors may have triggered Don’s reaction. First, even though the house had been built approximately seven years earlier, inside it was basically just a shell. The previous owner never actually lived in the home and before selling had stripped the home of most of its fixtures, cabinetry, tile work, and flooring. Second, once he saw past all that chaos, Don could see the interior of this home was completely contemporary. The work required to make the space habitable and its split personality may have caused many to pass on this parcel, but Don was enchanted. The fact that the home was stripped suited him perfectly. “I had been looking for a new place for three or four years,” he says. “I couldn’t find anything where I wasn’t paying for someone else’s tastes that I would later just rip out and replace. This place was exactly what I wanted—the whole ball of wax.” “I love Arts and Crafts and I love contemporary,” Don says. “I could live in either style, but all of a sudden I had both.”
Closing the deal At this point, Don looped Kim into the process, but she wasn’t as smitten at first. “When she first saw the house, Kim thought I was nuts,” Don says. “Once she had a chance to stop and look and think, she started to see what I saw.”
OPPOSITE: The kitchen cabinetry and the dining room table were created from the same type of wood by Sachi Woodworking. RIGHT: Vases from California studio potters (clockwise from top): Laura Andreson ca.1950; V & O Heino ca.1970; Gertrude and Otto Natzler ca.1960; Peter Voulkous ca.1979; Harrison McIntosh ca.1970. BELOW: The couple purchased this mirror at an auction in New Orleans.
Kim admits that the condition of the house threw her off at first, but she was able to quickly regain her footing and see the potential. “Anytime I go into someone’s home, I don’t look at the furnishings, carpet and window treatments. I look at the bones of the house,” says Kim. “I’ve actually always been attracted to homes with a more minimalistic design.”
Building the gang In fact, both Kim and Don have a keen eye for design and had a good feel for the direction they wanted to take the home. At first, Don thought he would oversee the project as a sort of general contractor, but plans soon changed. “I started out on my own but quickly got a headache,” Don says. The couple’s first call was to Joe Stewart, an old friend of Don’s, who happens to be president of Stewart and Jervis Builders. Once Stewart became involved, Kim says the process kicked into high gear. continued >

OPPOSITE: Underlit glass stairs lead to two bedrooms on the second floor. A third bedroom is on the lower level. ABOVE: In the master bedroom, woodworkers built two end tables that hook into the wall and float above the floor.
“Joe and his crew attacked this house like a swarm of bees,” she says. “The electricians, the plumbers, and the woodworkers all came at once. It was great. Joe had his group on it. They started in March, we moved in in June.”
Keeping it clean Today, just months after their move-in date, there is no sign of the earlier chaotic condition of the home. The space is carefully planned and skillfully constructed. The furnishings are crisp and the condition is immaculate. “I like to keep things uncluttered,” Kim says. Actually that may be a bit of an understatement. Despite being home to three children, ages 7 to 16, and hosting occasional visits from an older daughter who lives nearby, the Treadway residence is always immaculate, thanks to Kim. continued >

“My husband will tell you that I am a little over the top,” she says. “But, believe me, he appreciates it.” Kim directs her gaze to the kitchen in the center of the first floor and points out the one downside of this contemporary floorplan. “There are no walls to hide anything.” That same feature is a perk when entertaining, however. The homeowner loves the way guests are not in her space while she is preparing food and drinks, but she still feels “somewhat connected with them.”

A stainless steel vessel sink contributes to the striking design of the first floor powder room.
Kim, who works part time as a fitness instructor, cooks dinner from scratch every night and spends most of her time in the kitchen as, she says, “Any mother would say.” The kitchen may be a bit smaller than the one in their previous home, but that is offset by the view out the window of their private wooded lot which is nearly five times the size of their former home. Although with that added land comes added challenges. “I used to look out my kitchen window to see my neighbor’s house,” says Kim. “Now I look out and see the deer eating my new landscaping.” Let’s just hope that just as mid-century pieces have found their place inside the contemporary Treadway home, plants can manage to equally prosper outside in the presence of the local wildlife.

Stripes can be found everywhere we look, from walls and floors, to fashion and architecture. Every design concept can benefit from the use of stripes because they are so versatile. You can combine stripes with everything from bold prints to delicate florals and end up with a stylish combination. Try mixing and matching patterns for an unexpected result.

resides a modern gem that relies on its natural surroundings to feed the soul of its family. Rich warm colors, an abundance of windows, and a clean modern design are all important elements that make this kitchen stand out, while at the same time, blend in with the rest of the house. The house, originally designed by well-known Cincinnati architect Hans Neutzel, is essentially a modern piece of art. Open staircases, an emphasis on horizontal and vertical lines, and views of the outside are just a few of Neutzel’s signature design elements found throughout the house. The home owners toured the house in 2001 and fell in love with the design. Even though their previous home was a Victorian, they chose to switch gears and take a chance on something different.

kitchentrends The couple lived with the kitchen the way it was for a while, but a few years ago they decided it needed some upgrading. They hired Rob Busch, AIA, from the architecture firm Drawing Dept, to redesign the kitchen. Busch says his main goal was to recover a lost connection to the outside. “The house’s biggest asset is the site, but the old kitchen didn’t lend itself to its surroundings, both inside and out,” he explains. “We set out to change the entire atmosphere.”
Hidden details They first tackled the footprint of the kitchen. The old space included a workstation located along the back of the house, which blocked the view outside as well as access to the dining room and living room beyond. Busch moved the main workspaces in the kitchen in order to open up the back of the house. Instead of a small window looking out into the woods, the homeowners now have floor-to-ceiling windows and doors that lead out to a deck. continued >

A support column that blocked the flow of the kitchen was also removed, a feat that required a great deal of patience and planning. “The column provided support to the kitchen, which is located on the middle floor of the house. Since we TOP RIGHT: The maple cabinets feature brushed aluminum frames. BOTTOM: The kitchen looks out over the private, treecovered hillside.
removed that support, we had to brace both the kitchen floor and the floor above with a large steel beam,” Busch says. “By removing that column, and enclosing an old deck off the back of the house, we were able to gain 60 square feet of space in the kitchen.” The new square footage made way for the breakfast area, and a more open floor plan. The homeowners say that entertain-
ing isn’t the hassle that it used to be, now that the kitchen has direct access to the dining room. They’re also able to open the doors to the deck in the spring and summer so guests can move about freely.
A clean aesthetic To accompany the change in the footprint of the kitchen, the homeowners wanted to create a clean and simple modern look.
42 housetrends.com 037-043 nKIT ModIntuition.indd 42
2/10/10 1:39:11 PM
kitchentrends “We spent a lot of time focusing on the design,” Busch explains. “It was very important for us to create a kitchen that stands the test of time and still looks relevant 20 years from now.” The cabinets set the overall tone in the kitchen. Unlike most cabinetry, which features vertical grain wood, these cabinets are comprised of reconstituted maple with the grain running horizontally. “It really makes you stop and take a second look,” Busch comments. Despite the minimalist aesthetic, the kitchen offers an abundance of storage space. The pullout drawers in the perimeter cabinets make locating pots and pans a snap, while the island houses large cabinets for items the homeowner occasionally needs, as well as the sink, garbage and recycling cans, and dishwasher. The pantry was moved from the space next to the laundry room and is now conveniently hidden behind the wall of cabinets on the outer edge of the kitchen. “We moved the planning area that holds the telephone and messaging center to the old pantry space,” Busch says. “It is now tucked away but still in a convenient location.” The inclusion of stainless steel appliances brings out the brushed aluminum cabinet frames. Cream quartz countertops, the back-painted glass backsplash, and the glassfront cabinets flanking the range finish off the seamless design. Not only was the design important, the homeowners, who enjoy cooking, wanted a functional kitchen. The large island serves as the base of operations. Its location is within arm’s reach of the refrigerator, double ovens, range and pantry. To top it off, cleaning up is a breeze, thanks to the smooth surfaces.
The sum of its parts All of the elements work together to create a clean and organized kitchen that is in sync with its busy family. “People get it from the moment they walk into the kitchen,” says Busch. “The kitchen has a life of its own. It has vitality and that is ultimately what makes it work.”

According to this well-respected and comprehensive book, there are five types of Modern houses built in America after 1935: Minimal Traditional, Ranch, SplitLevel, Contemporary and Shed. Our focus here is a subtype of Contemporary: the flat-roofed American International.
The long and short of it The Bauhaus School in Germany developed a program of applied arts that influenced art, architecture, furnishings, graphic design and industrial design. The program incorporated nascent Modern concepts of simplified forms and design based on functionality with an absence of historical references. Many artists of the Bauhaus impacted design elsewhere in Europe, the U.S., Canada and Israel as they fled the growing power and disapproval of the Nazi regime. In 1932, America was introduced to the
International style by a seminal exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art: “The International Style: Architecture Since 1922” that identified and defined the major architectural style born of the Modern concepts that evolved in the 1920s and 30s. The main tenets of the International architectural style (which was based in large part on the Bauhaus philosophy) included radical simplification of form, lack of ornamentation and rejection of historical reference, use of concrete, steel and glass building materials and functionalism. (Functionalism emphasized an “honest” or “transparent” expression in the design of the structure, believing the design elements that served its occupants should not be disguised with useless decoration). Architects Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius were the trendsetters. The International
style has had lasting impact on commercial and residential architecture in the United States. American International homes sometimes take on a “vernacular” (domestic, local) flavor, using materials particular to their locales. Although some maintain a strict adherence to International ideals, some examples adhere more to the “spirit” than the “letter” of the law. Some also incorporate attributes of other modern styles, such as Shed (roofs), and Art Moderne, which was influenced by the streamlined industrial design of airplanes, ships and autos. Art Moderne was similar, and simultaneous to the International style, but not as severely lacking in decorative details. Editor’s note: This quick look at American International style contemporary homes is the first in a series of six guides on residential architecture. Stay tuned!

wyoming family gives mid-century concrete home a warm embrace

Twelve years ago, on super Bowl sunday,
when most of us were sitting in our overstuffed chairs getting ready to watch the big game, Joel, sara and asa pranikoff ventured out in a foot of freshly fallen snow and stumbled upon the home of their dreams. The home, located in the Cincinnati suburb of wyoming, had been empty for years and now sat seemingly forgotten at the top of a steep drive surrounded by overgrown weeds. when they were finally able to track down a real estate agent to show them inside the house that day, Joel Joel describes the and sara weren’t the least bit bothered by what they saw. house as being “in terrible condition—all of the woodwork was termite infested, mice were living in what was left of the curtains and you couldn’t even tell what the floors were made of.” what the pranikoffs later discovered was that the floors were made of concrete. as a matter of fact, not only the floors but every wall and the roof of the home were constructed of poured concrete. structurally and architecturally, it was one of the most striking houses either of them had ever seen,

Concrete bunker Cincinnati industrialist and inventor of Sakrete, Art Avril, and his wife Mary, built the house in 1952 using the same steel forms that were designed to seal abandoned mine shafts; forms that were used to build the Sakrete factory as well. The house was built from plans drawn by California architect Cliff May who is best remembered for developing the suburban California ranch house of the 1940s and 1950s. The five suburban acres were landscaped by Mary Avril who was president of The Garden Club of America. Joel and Sara realize most people would have a difficult time embracing the concept of living in a concrete house. There are inherent challenges in a concrete home such as the inability to move walls if you want to remodel, the need to use an impact drill to hang a picture and the heating expense since concrete is not an insulator. Honoring and accepting the idiosyncrasies of the house, the Pranikoffs focused on updating with respect to its original design while incorporating modern amenities. What they have created is a very personalized and comfortable interior to showcase their collections and favorite finds from over the years. “While we don’t subscribe to any specific style,” says Sara, “the overall feel of the interior is modern. Most of the major furniture pieces, whether new or vintage, were chosen to agree with the architectural lines of the spaces and needed to be substantial because of the scale of the rooms.” Stepping outside the box to get the perfect furniture piece is an area where Sara and Joel excel. When they came across an Indonesian day bed they liked, the Pranikoffs remade it into their living room coffee table. In the dining room, and commanding center continued > Page 54: The polished, acid-stained concrete floors are original to the house. PAGE 55: The kinetic outdoor sculpture is by a local artist. stage, is the large dining table constructed of repurposed floor boards from a farm house in Latvia, the northern European home country of Joel’s grandparents. With the exception of the couches, very few of their furniture items were purchased through typical retail channels.
Coming by it honestly Both Sara and Joel grew up going to estate sales, antique shops and shopping in unexpected and out of the way places. Joel’s design sensibility was influenced early in life by his mother who owned a Cincinnati boutique in the 1960s called Good Design. His childhood home, also located in Wyoming, was featured on a Contemporary Arts Center Tour in the 1950s. Joel’s mother filled their home with Danish modern furniture and art similar to the vintage Bjorn Wiinblad posters that now hang in the Pranikoffs’ dining room. Sara’s design sense was cultivated by a combination of her formal training in fine arts and her travels growing up in a military family. One of her earliest collections began when her mother handed down the Russel Wright dishes Sara had grown up with. It was the simple functional shapes of Russel Wright’s dinnerware which led to her appreciation for modern design. In addition to the dishes, her Russel Wright collection now includes a ribbon handled dresser made for American Way. The American Way Program was launched in 1940 by Russel Wright, with the help of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, and consisted of a coalition of industrial designers who collaborated to bring good design to the American public. Sara and Joel’s son Asa is developing his own sense of style, influenced by his parents and his surroundings. At age 13, he has attended many of the 20th Century Cincinnati Mid-Century Modern shows and several Cincinnati Form Follows Function (CF3) events. continued > TOP AND BOTTOM LEFT: One-inch stainless steel tiles cover the kitchen’s backsplash and reflect the feel of the two wall ovens which are original to the home. Road trips Joel and Sara share a passion for art and other unique objects. Their art collection includes vintage posters, serigraphs, paintings, and sculptures by Bjorn Wiinblad, Peter Max, Harris Strong and Louise Nevelson to name a few. Excursions to antique stores near and far have led to the discovery of interesting artifacts such as tramp art, trench art and memory jugs. Over the years, Joel and Sara have planned their family vacations to include stops in towns that are unique shopping destinations. Both agree that when they choose something for their home it is because they feel a connection to it, or they appreciate its good design and the energy it brings to a room. Sara feels that collecting a combination of primitive, modern and antique dĂŠcor requires a certain amount of risk taking. continued >

ABOVE: Multiple variations of these Torino robot lamps are found throughout the Pranikoffs’ home.
“You create tension when you mix items of different time periods, so you have to establish harmony between them,” says Sara. Joel agrees and laughs as he remembers a trip to West Virginia years ago when he and Sara bought a unique and expensive lamp for the living room. “We got the lamp home and both agreed it looked so awful that I turned around and drove it back to West Virginia the next day.”
A means with no end To a visitor in the Pranikoff home, it is obvious that Joel and Sara have a talent for selecting distinct items, and that they’ve accomplished an interior of extraordinary interest and detail. To these homeowners, however, their home is a constant work in progress as they give careful consideration to the placement of each and every item, whether it’s a new arrival or something they’ve owned for years. “The excitement of living here,” Sara says, “comes from the process of being creative in each of the spaces, even more so than the end result.” While the concrete structure solidly defines the perimeters of their home, Joel and Sara don’t buy into a strictly defined decor. Their style, just like their home, is one of a kind.

Art glass captures a fluid quality in a solid form By Barbara E. Cohen
Functional glass is a magical material, art glass doubly so. How exactly does the artist transform scoops of sand, limestone and soda ash into a translucent or transparent form that retains some of its molten qualities in a solid state? ● According to archaeological finds, the first manufactured glass was created as long ago as 4500 B.C. Then as now, glass was exalted for its magical as well as its functional properties. Nowhere was glass more revered than in France during the Gothic period, when the Abbot Suger of the Abbey of Saint-Denis decreed that light streaming through colored bits of stained glass was divine light. ● By the start of the 20th century, artists intent on breaking with centuries-old glassmaking traditions exploited the properties of this extraordinary, luminous material, creating everything from home furnishings to objets d’art. By 1933, “streamlining”—the removal of superficial ornamentation for its own sake—was the hallmark of mid-century design, especially as promoted at the Century of Progress Exhibition in Chicago in 1933. Glass remained popular because of its ability to “warm up” a room otherwise stripped of ornamentation. continued >

collectiontrends Modernist art glass defined Artists love to exploit the unique properties of glass, including its fragility (Dale Chihuly has called it “liquid breath”), transparency and luminosity. All art glass—also called studio glass—captures the essential liquid quality of the medium; 20th-century art glass echoes the fluid, curvaceous, highly sensual and reductionist qualities of Modernist design, such as the curvy contours of an Eames fiberglass chair. Both mass-manufactured and hand-made “studio” glass objects from the mid-20th century mirror the industrial design aesthetics—pared-down “aerodynamic” forms, uninterrupted undulating lines and unmasked materials—promoted by architects such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard J. Neutra. Contemporary studio glass artists such as Chihuly owe much of their inspiration and many innovative techniques to the Modernist artists who expanded the glassmaker’s repertoire while warming the minimalist spaces with shards of color and light.
The collector’s touch
20th-century art glass echoes the fluid, curvaceous, highly sensual and reductionist qualities of
The best 20th-century art glass was made by craftspeople in Europe and the Americas inspired by innovations in painting, sculpture, architecture and home décor from the period after World War I until the end of the century. Glass was especially popular in the Art Nouveau movement, embodied in French names such as René Lalique, Émile Gallé, and Daum of Nancy. Imported vases, lamps and windows in cameo and luster techniques inspired American artists such as Louis Comfort Tiffany, who wrought floral forms in panels, vases and on lampshades. Glass moved from being a “craft” item to “fine art” as glassmakers became sculptors of decorative, as well as functional, pieces. For example, earthy Arts and Crafts-period pieces contain images of the natural world that highlight glass’s matter-of-fact origins, while Art Deco and Streamline Moderne capture its minimalist, understated cool. Collectors look for pieces made with a range of techniques— “hot” or “cold” manipulated, plain or embellished. (Visit housetrends.com/artglass to learn more.) Mass-manufactured “Depression glass” from the 1920s took advantage of innovations in commercial production methods, whereas studio glass is still made by hand by individual artists who sign their work. continued >

Many collectors specialize according to the type of glass they collect, whether by color, texture, purpose (shape), sparkle (refraction and dispersal of light) or manufacturer. The value of a piece can also be enhanced by knowing its provenance (who it was made for or who owned it before you). Glass’s rarity depends on the number of pieces made originally as well as the number that have survived without chipping or shattering. Seek out dinnerware, stemware and table settings; glass containers such as bowls, vases, bottles and other vessels; paperweights; marbles; beads and jewelry; lamps and chandeliers; mirrors; and sculpture in a mind-bending, jewel-like array. To learn more about art glass, visit museums devoted to the collection and preservation of the decorative arts and especially art in glass, such as the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington; the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the Toledo (Ohio) Museum of Art; and Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York, which contains more than 45,000 objects.

Fans of Chicago’s Higgins Studio Glass applauded when in 2004 glass designers Jonathan and Louise Wimmer took command of the company. Thanks to their efforts, the Higgins tradition lives on and continues to grow. ● “We work in the style of Michael and Frances Higgins, but today we’re making pieces on a larger scale,” says Louise Wimmer. “We create more installations for corporate spaces, and we develop new color combinations—but everything we do preserves the quality and aesthetic of the original studio.” ● Rondelays—colorful fused-glass “sandwiches” of circles and squares attached in sections used as room dividers, window treatments and three-dimensional curtains—were a staple of the Higgins Studio. “Higginsware” tableware, lamps, ashtrays, candleholders, paperweights, ornaments, jewelry, wall plaques and free-standing sculptures reside in many museum collections, such as the Smithsonian Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Milwaukee Museum of Art, as well as major glass collections in New York City, Toledo, and Corning, New York. ● Only a few older pieces made by Michael or Frances are available for sale. These works are signed “Higgins” and date from 1948 to 2004. After taking over, the Wimmers changed the signature to “Higgins Studio” so collectors know they were made after the death of Frances Higgins in 2004. Editor’s Note: Meet Jonathan and Louise Wimmer and see their work at the 20th Century Cincinnati at the Sharonville Convention Center on February 27-28.

Spring
is the time of renewal and the best time to sweep out the cobwebs in
your basement and plant those annuals in your garden before the scorching weather of summer appears. Focusing on both the outside and inside of your home will not only freshen up the appearance, but will also add value to your largest investment. From the big ticket items such as windows and roofs, to the more manageable lawn care and cleaning, preserving your home’s beauty is a wise decision.

The outside affects the inside When you think of replacing windows, it seems that common sense would lead you to hire a company in the fall in order to save on those high heating bills. Realistically, anytime is a good time to replace your old, drafty windows. Spring is a good time, though, because of the mild temperatures that won’t freeze or burn you out of your house while the construction is ongoing. Also, you will still see a savings on your electric
bill because new windows will not let that muchneeded air conditioning work too hard. Roofs are also something to consider replacing in the spring. The same theory for windows goes for roofs as well. Much like windows, you only have to replace a roof every 20 years or so, unless an act of nature dictates otherwise. The cost savings is great for both winter and summer, too. When thinking about the roof, you might also want to consider the gutters. Sure you can keep them cleaned of debris, but consider if your

downspouts are not functioning properly, your foundation may be taking on moisture. That means that there could be a potential for the dreaded black mold to grow! Take a look at every side where the gutters are installed, preferably when it is raining, to check for leaks and needed repairs. Gutter covers are also a good way to go so that you won’t have to worry about getting out the ladder, hose and bucket in order to get all those leaves and branches out that are left over from the fall. Proper insulation goes hand in hand with energy efficient windows and roofs. If your
house is not insulated up to code, chances are new windows or a new roof won’t work as efficiently as if all three are perfectly in sync.
Preserving your lawn and garden So, you’ve had a rest from your lawn and garden care during the winter months. Those perennials have lain dormant for months, and now it is time to spruce up the landscape. A few things need to be done even before taking on that project. First off, in order to have a well kept lawn, your lawn mower needs attention. Giving your lawn mower a tune up, as well as a blade sharpening, will help your lawn stay manicured without tearing up the grass. Make sure

you rake or mulch those pesky remaining leaves from the fall, aerate your lawn and make sure your soil has a neutral pH balance—grass loves that! Don’t forget to fertilize the lawn and pull out weeds in the garden. Planting fresh, vibrant flowers, usually after Mother’s Day to make sure there is no more threat of a frost, is a great way to perk up any tired landscape.

you strategies for your home or workplace that will last a lifetime and help make the chore of spring cleaning more of a fun project. If you are satisfied with the way your house is structured, but just need an extra hand with keeping it neat and tidy, a house cleaning service may be the way to go. There are many, many to choose from, so comparing prices, availability and the services they actually provide—most professional house cleaning services do not
include cleaning windows—is the way to find the right fit. Painting, where it is inside rooms or outdoor trim, will absolutely wake up tired spaces. Doing it yourself can be satisfying, yet time consuming, so hiring out the job may not be such a bad idea. There are a variety of ways to keep your house maintained for years to come. Some are annual fixes, some only once a decade or more. You can tackle all the projects at once or take years to finish that “honey do list. Whatever you
choose, the money you put into the upkeep of your house translates into a smart return on investment for the future of your home.
