Maybe they couldn’t handle the expense or the hassle of it all. Or perhaps they were less particular than most of us. But for nearly 80 years, those preparing meals inside a stately North Avondale home managed to do so in a kitchen that hadn’t seen an update since the Great Depression. That’s quite surprising considering the emphasis Americans place on our kitchens and their role in our homes. While poking around on the National Kitchen & Bath Association web site (a great source for tips if you’re considering a remodel, by the way), I found this tidbit: “Kitchen remodels are viewed by women consumers as the premier interior decorating project when it comes to ‘showing who I am’ to friends, relatives and other women.”* This is something the editorial team at Housetrends understands well. We know that kitchens are where your family talks and company gathers. That’s why kitchens have always been and will continue to be the focus of our publication. We work hard to keep you abreast of the latest technology and in touch with the incredible work created by our local pool of talented kitchen designers. Speaking of which…we are happy to be part of this year’s NKBA’s Southern Ohio/Kentucky Chapter 2009 Design Competition. Winners will be announced next month and featured in a future issue of Housetrends. By the way, compared to their female counterparts, men hold entertainment spaces and finished basements in slightly higher regard.* We’ll have something for the guys in our next issue! Have fun looking,

The

Young family finds room to grow By Sarah J. Dills

Photos by Robin Victor Goetz, RVGP Inc. It can happen at any time—driving home from work, on a trip to the grocery store, taking a Sunday drive. In the most unexpected moments, fate has a way of intervening and pointing life down a new path. F This was just the type of destiny that led one northern Kentucky family to their dream home in Covington. The rest, as they say, is history. F “We were driving and saw the For Sale sign out front,” Stacey, the homeowner, says. “We were drawn to the Swiss Chalet design, but we weren’t sure if it was a single family home or an apartment building. We called the realtor, and she showed us the home within the hour.” F “It was spur of the moment,” she adds, explaining that her family, including husband Eric and young daughter Lyla, was currently living in Newport. “We knew we wanted a home with a large lot, and that’s hard to find in Covington.” continued >

Barriers to building The home, built in the 1850s, has a rich history and wonderful craftsmanship that the homeowners wanted to respect and restore. The latter would prove challenging however due to some of the home’s many transformations over the years. According to Stacey, the previous owner was in the process of converting the home to a bed and breakfast when they lost financing for the project. At the time of purchase, the current owners were faced with some major disrepair. Plumbing had been removed, electrical wiring needed attention, and the house needed to be reconfigured to

accommodate a modern family. The realtor recommended that the homeowners meet with Donald Beck, AIA of Beck Architecture to establish a plan to rebuild their house into the 21st century. Jim Stegman Construction Company and Legacy Kitchens were also brought on board, and the team worked together for a year and a half to renovate the home. One of the major areas of redesign was the kitchen. “We lived in the carriage house during renovation,” Stacey remembers. “We were in a one-bedroom apartment with an 18-monthold, but it really wasn’t that bad.”

Knocking down and building up A small kitchen, a pantry, an office and a service staircase were all located in the rear corner of the home where Beck and the homeowners envisioned the new, open kitchen. “Don suggested that we open the space to bring in more light and create more room and an open floor plan,” Stacey says. “We also opened the space to the dining room and created doors that lead to the patio, so we’ve extended our entertaining area.” After the floor plan was configured, which also includes a rear staircase that provides the family with more private continued >

access to the kitchen, the homeowners began working with Molly Wagner at Legacy Kitchens to create a contemporary look that kept in keeping with the historical elements of the home.

Classic contemporary “I definitely like clean lines and contemporary style, but we wanted to mirror that with the original woodworking and design of the home,” says Stacey. “We tried to pick materials that would have been used when the home was originally built.” For example, she and Eric selected Carrera marble for the flooring, coun-

tertops and backsplash. Stacey says she probably would have chosen granite for the countertops, but that would not have been found in a home during the 1850s. Although it may not have been her first choice, Stacey says the elegance of the marble is now one of her favorite features of the kitchen. “The homeowners definitely knew what they wanted,” Wagner says of initial meetings. “They were a young couple with their first daughter, and they were in the process of renovating a historic home to include modern touches and contemporary design.

“The house had been renovated so many times before we got there,” Wagner adds. “So there were several challenges to overcome throughout the process.” One of the main obstacles that the design team encountered was a lack of closet space in the house. This minimal storage issue flowed into the kitchen. The homeowners and design team came up with a solution utilizing the massive 11½-foot ceilings. A row of cabinetry was hung at standard height, but then an additional rung of cabinets was placed overhead to provide the homeowners with additional storage space. “A lot of people continued >

question why we would hang cabinets so high that they can’t be reached without a step stool or ladder, but this space can be used to store items like Christmas dishes or formal serving trays that only come out a few times a year,” Wagner says. The cabinets were chosen in a black finish to create a nice contrast to the white marble. This helps add another element of contemporary design to the elegant space. There is also a balance of contemporary and classic between the stainless steel appliances and the decorative fixtures. “Stacey did a really good job picking out fixtures for the space,” Wagner says. “She mixed glass and pewter hardware on the cabinetry to create more of a focal point.”

Eric and Stacey also worked with Grainger’s Metal Restoration to select lighting that would look original to the home. The fixtures were then refinished to blend with the contemporary design.

A few favorites The couple loves entertaining in their newly renovated home. The flow from the kitchen into the dining area and out to the patio is one of their favorite features of the space.

“I like being able to cook in the kitchen and still interact with people outside,” Stacey explains. The large island is another of her favorite areas. The size provides this family, which has now expanded to include a second daughter, with a perfect eating area. “The island will be great for crafts as my girls get older.”

Kitchen remodel speaks to homeowners’ desires By Alice P. Drake | Photos by Ross Van Pelt

Joe and Pepe Squeri are very busy people. They own a thriving business, S&S Construction, and have seven children, ranging in age from 12 to 29. Even though the 29-year-old does not live in the house now, the other six plus their parents needed an updated kitchen with colossal amounts of storage in which no one would be bumping elbows. But it all really started with the need for new, not to mention modern, appliances. F “The appliances were ready to go, so we decided that we wanted to update the whole kitchen,” explains Pepe.

About that same time, the couple stumbled upon the good folks at Howard’s Kitchen Studio at a home show. Perhaps it was fate, as that was the very same company that had installed their kitchen cabinetry when they first built their house almost 20 years before.

Storage is key During the design phase, as they worked with Sandee

Daye, a kitchen designer with Howard’s Kitchen Studio, the Squeris noted that not only were the appliances outdated, they needed more storage and countertop space, but did not want to partake in a costly renovation or include an addition. Although the renovation kept the same footprint, ideas such as ceiling-high cabinetry and the matching coffee bar that leads from the kitchen

into the family room, make the room live large. Pepe wanted pantry storage, but did not necessarily want the same old closet or typical pantry cabinetry. Daye came up with idea of having the pantry as a wall of extra-deep cabinetry so that Pepe and the kids could easily access items without rollout trays. “I love that pantry area,” says Daye. The family does a lot of

entertaining and they definitely wanted to keep an island in the kitchen; they just added more seating and storage. For that island and the row of cabinets under the windows, a dark cherry overlay selection from Mouser with a graphite stain was chosen. That cabinetry complements the inset maple cabinets with a Burnished Eggshell stain seen throughout the rest of the

kitchen, as well as the preexisting wood flooring with walnut stain. The ceilings are high in this kitchen, but an old soffit was removed to open the space visually without tearing down walls. The cabinetry was then taken almost up to the ceiling and topped with two-piece, crown moulding. “This is part of the expression I wanted, to have the cabinetry look like furniture,” explains Daye.

Not only are there two types of cabinetry, there are also two types of countertops. Pepe and Joe had the chance to explore a granite yard to find just the right slab, in this case an example called Silver Persian, that spoke to them. Extra-thick, 2½-inch walnut was used for the counter at the pantry and coffee bar as a counterpart to the granite. Daye offhandedly mentions

that she was a part of distressing the walnut countertops by hand—something in which she does not usually get to participate.

Wish list comes true The appliances are prime for an article all to themselves. There is the substantial Wolf stove that Pepe absolutely wanted. “We had double ovens before, but now the Wolf stove is the

focal point. The appliances were important and make a big difference when cooking,” shares Pepe. The only other appliances that can be seen in the kitchen are the microwave drawer, yes drawer, adjacent to the stove and the Miele coffeemaker positioned on the coffee bar. “The microwave drawer is great because it is easy to pick up hot items without worrying that they will spill on your continued >

Just off the mudroom, the pantry provides easy access to after-school snacks. OPPOSITE TOP: The refrigerator is cleverly concealed with custom panels. OPPOSITE BOTTOM: A coffee bar helps make the transition between the kitchen and the morning news in the family room.

kitchentrends head,” laughs Pepe. All other appliances, including a warmer, refrigerator, freezers, dishwasher and trash compactor, are integrated into the cabinetry via drawers or paneling that make them almost invisible. One of Joe’s favorite aspects of the redesigned space is the coffee bar. It has an undermount sink that Daye found would add even more interest to the piece, but the Miele coffee system is an absolute hit with Joe. The convenience of the integrated icemaker and refrigerator drawer is a plus, too. Daye notes that the two drawer appliances are from different manufacturers, and she had to really apply her design aplomb to finally figure out how to align them. Joe was interested in having a flat-screen television over the oven, but after much debate, it was decided to place the television over the entrance into the dining room, so as not to spoil the look of the mantel above the stove. As Pepe so aptly stated, the focal point of the kitchen is the beloved Wolf stove accented by a unique backsplash. The small squares are made up of crushed glass set in resin, which gives them shine. Ceramic tiles frame the smaller tiles above the stove and again in the coffee bar backsplash. “It is something a little different at this point,” says Daye.

Lighten up The massive amounts of lighting include under-cabinet lights, recessed lighting, pendants and even the three windows opposite the large island. The top cabinets have glass fronts and sides that not only make the ceiling seem endless, but the espresso paint color inside allows decorative pieces to add pops of color in the room. In contrast, the walls are a deep navy blue with purple cast called “Wood Violet” from Benjamin Moore. That color flows from the kitchen into the dining room and study. The faucets in the main sink and prep sink at the coffee bar have LED lights that glow when the water is pouring out of the spout…very illuminating. “We had a lot of fun with this project. They let me loose with the design,” notes Daye. “Pepe has great taste in color, as you can see in the paint color and accessories she uses in the kitchen.” Pepe adds, “I really love this kitchen!” Kitchen designer: Sandee Daye, CMKBD, Howard’s Kitchen Studio; Cabinetry: Mouser inset in Burnished Eggshell and Cherry Graphite; Flooring: Oak with walnut stain; Countertops: Silver Persian granite, 2½-inch thick walnut; Backsplash: Sonoma Tile in India Ink and Tantrum Pewter and Tweed mix; Main sink: Blanco Precision; Bar sink: Fran KWC; Hardware: Colonial Bronze; Lighting: Forecast pendants; Paint: Wood violet, Benjamin Moore; Windows: Pella; Appliances: Wolf range and warming drawer; Sub-Zero refrigerator and ice maker; Sharp microwave drawer; Miele dishwasher and coffee system; Marvel refrigerator drawers; KitchenAid trash compactor; all from Howard’s Kitchen Studio

www.extremesolar.us | 513-895-0697 WHY SOLAR ENERGY? THE ANSWER IS SIMPLE. By installing a PV Solar System, you will reduce your carbon footprint, create energy independence and be a part of a growing trend that future generations are sure to appreciate. Q. Does solar energy make financial sense? A. The National Appraisal Journal and the Wells Fargo Newsletter stated that for every $1 in annual utility savings, your home value will increase by $20. This means that if your solar system offsets $1,000 in electricity costs, the value of your home is increased by $20,000. Your system will nearly pay for itself the day it is installed and commissioned on your home. Q. Is solar energy affordable? A. If you are currently spending $200 each month ($2400 a year) or $24,000 over the next 10 years and factor in a conservative yearly increase of 4.5% (national average), you will have spent $35,677 with no return on your dollars. Q. Will the price come down over time? A. Significant subsidies and tax credits are available to you today by the state of Ohio and the Federal Government that can considerably reduce the cost of a solar system. As the cost of solar goes down, so will the subsidy amount. Why spend $35,667 over the next 10 years and then spend another $35,000 on a solar system in 10 years when you can start producing your own electricity today to avoid these costs?

reasure sland By Danielle Krouse

Unlike a deserted island, a kitchen island is a gathering place. A place where family and friends get together to talk about their day— good or bad, while at the same time get a sneak peek at what’s for dinner. Positioned in the center of the kitchen and usually being the focal point of the room, islands demand attention. Whether made out of concrete or wood, granite or even lava, kitchen islands are truly unique treasures. There is a dream island out there for everyone, no matter where you want to go: a swanky loft downtown, a traditional setting in the country or a bold and colorful retreat. From contemporary to shabby chic, double islands even double the fun for some homeowners. So go ahead, sail away to your island of choice, we’re sure you’ll come back refreshed and relaxed. continued >

This couple loves to entertain so the outdoor spaces needed to remain functional and still maintain a traditional, classical design style to match the house. The landscape, completed in July 2007, does that beautifully. The transition from indoors to outdoors is easy and elegant. French doors open from the sunroom to a fountain area on one end of the home. The kitchen addition overlooks a spacious patio on the other. Every room opens up to a garden, and every window has a garden vista.

The fountain area The goal in the fountain area was to integrate the beautiful sunroom with the landscaping. Susan envisioned the fountain, but Andy worked out the details. In this garden, traditional boxwood hedging mixes with red Knock Out roses. Serviceberry trees and dianthus bloom in the spring and give nice color before the roses start blooming. Season-long color comes from the salvia ‘May Night’, Shasta daisies, periwinkle plants around the fountain, and pansies in urns by the door. There is a bench for quiet contemplation of the flowing water from the fountain. continued >

Susan chose the beautiful blonde travertine stone pavers, used throughout the landscape, for their light color and classic look. “The travertine was ideal because we could put it over the existing concrete on the front veranda, and also use it on the new patios, to tie everything together,” she says. Susan wanted the French patio doors to open out, rather than the more typical inward opening, to facilitate the flow of guests when having large parties. In order to do this, there were some permitting issues. The results were worth the extra effort.

The patio area Because the home lacks a back yard, the side yard next to the kitchen addition became the sensible place to put an outdoor sitting and dining area. This is where Susan and Jim have outdoor dinner parties, often making use of the built-in barbeque grill. They have hosted a baby shower that was an indoor/outdoor affair, and a couple of other larger group get-togethers. “We know Andy socially, so we have the same set of friends. When we had the first get-together of that group here, everybody wanted to see the recently Perrino-fied yard,” laughs Susan. continued > OPPOSITE: Red astilbe and holly bushes are in the foreground near the built-in barbeque grill, eating area and gazebo. Here, Karen azaleas bloom in spring, followed by astilbe and impatiens in a shady corner. Oakleaf, Annabell and Endless Summer hydrangeas with their huge blossoms add color to the traditional green boxwood hedges. Norway Spruces provide privacy. Jim built the gazebo for Susan because she wanted a place to sit outside without bugs. He has installed a fan, which he hopes will disburse the mosquitoes, but if not, he will screen in the gazebo. A bistro table will provide a place for the couple to eat.

The veranda When Susan and Jim bought their home, there was no access to the front door from the street in front of the house. “In addition, the portico was pulling away from the house and there was only one pillar on each side to support it,” says Jim. It needed repair. This inspired the new walkway up to the front and the splendid veranda. “It ended up much grander that we first imagined!” says Susan. The lush lawn is a fine foil for roses, hollies and ivy, while classical urns overflow with flowers.

Throughout garden history, structure, ornaments and follies can all be traced back to classical influences. Classical landscape design uses clean lines and clipped shrubbery to develop an uncluttered look. Other elements include:

Outdoor rooms The Romans included a central garden courtyard in private houses as early as the 3rd century BC. Today’s garden rooms might include a pergola structure dripping with vines, an outdoor kitchen, or a dining area with couches for relaxation. These outdoor living areas create a transition connecting the indoor and outdoor spaces. Water fountains Water is prized within classical landscape design and nothing showcases it like a pictureperfect outdoor water fountain or wall fountain. Formal statuary Marble or concrete urns and statuary add sturdiness and a feeling of antiquity. Landscape features Landscape lighting is an important element as it creates ambiance and allows for outdoor enjoyment, night and day. Walkways leading from one garden to another are a further essential feature.

Susan and Jim saw a baby bunny when they were transplanting some hosta to make way for the landscaping crew. They stopped digging and left a note for the landscapers that said: “Baby bunny habitat. Please do not disturb.” When Susan returned later that day, Josh Otto, the landscape foreman assured her that the bunny had hopped away to another yard and begged, “Please let us take these out now!” Susan agreed, “As long as you aren’t bothering the bunnies!” “The landscaping crew was great,” Susan says. “We had Josh move one of the Norway spruces three times to get it right where I wanted it. They were very willing to do anything, change anything, talk with me as things were going in, and they cleaned up after themselves every day.” Susan and Jim’s next landscaping project will be to remove some honeysuckle and replace it with a coniferous privacy hedge. They would like to use yews. Perrino warned them that deer love to munch on yews. They assured him that deer weren’t a problem here, and in fact they had never seen a deer. Soon after that, however, deer started coming to snack on the roses. “It’s as if Andy cursed us,” Susan jokes. “And now the deer come around all of the time!”

OPPOSITE: Sunflower plants that Jim started from seed await planting near the patio. TOP: Kitchen window treatments frame the view without obstructing it. Sebastian checks out the table settings. BELOW: The patio is the ideal entertainment area for dinner parties.

the old master bathroom in the home of Jennifer and dr. Joel tobiansky was a typical circa-1980s design complete with formica countertops, pastel colors, and a tiny pre-fab shower. | the new bathroom is nothing short of dazzling—no longer a bathroom at all—but rather an experience. continued >

bathroom trends OVERLEAF: Brushed nickel hardware and a small under-cabinet refrigerator finish off the design. RIGHT: The ceiling mirror is comprised of mylar, the same substance used to make balloons.

Creating a masterpiece The countertops were replaced several years ago but the rest of the overhaul sat waiting. Jennifer and Joel teamed up with Chris Newman of Cheeky Monkey, a decorative painting and interior design company, and Erich Eggers of Remodeling Designs Inc., to create a masterpiece unlike any other. “In all the publications and research we did we never saw anything like it,” says Joel. “Some of the best comments we get come from men, and usually men could care less,” Jennifer says with a laugh. Before the materials were selected, a basic design for the bathroom had to be created. Even though the trend is to have a jetted or garden bathtub in a master bathroom, the Tobianskys opted against the idea, saying they wouldn’t use it. Instead, Joel says he dreamed of a luxurious shower. The new design incorporates a zerothreshold shower in place of the old tub and a closet area. The original water closet remained, while the area that housed the original shower became storage space. The layout of the vanity area stayed similar but the finishes, like the rest of the visual decor, were dramatically changed.

Front and center Imagine a shower experience, provided by a computerized Kohler digital interface. A pre-set satellite radio station in the bathroom wakes you in the next room. As you sleepily step onto the warm tile floor thanks to radiant heat and enter the large shower, you simply hit an electronic pad that offers whatever pre-determined combination of body sprays and water temperature you desire. Surrounding you

are a mixture of sleek blue glass tiles and tiny iridescent accent pieces. If you wish to sit down in the shower, the black granite seat is also heated. Joel says the visually stunning shower, which is no longer “tucked away like an afterthought,” lets in plenty of natural light thanks to the two glass block windows. A sheet of glass on the side with all of the shower controls and sprays “is almost like an illusion,” says Jennifer. Both Jennifer and Joel are athletic, sometimes showering twice a day. After a workout, Joel has a second, pre-programmed shower that utilizes only body sprays. There is also a flat-panel television and refrigerator built into the vanity

cabinetry. With all of that, who needs a jetted tub?

Eclectic mix of materials Eggers credits Newman for envisioning the perfect combination of faux finishes and other materials. In addition to the black matte cabinetry, he suggested the use of the 1x1-inch Walker Zanger glass tile for the shower floor and bench seat wall, the 12x24-inch black tile for the bathroom floor, the fluted glass block windows and silver hardware and accents. Newman was no stranger to the Tobianskys and they trusted him completely. “Chris has done the entire house now, except maybe the garage. He has a way of seeing the end

9/18/09 3:02:22 PM

product before it is done. I could have trusted him even if we were out of town,” Jennifer says. A specialized sandblasting technique was applied to the glass doors leading from the bedroom to the new bath, and to the water closet area in order to obscure views. “On one side vertical lines are blasted and on the back side the lines are shifted the width of the sandblasting line. It works like a privacy fence. The pattern is called Tuxedo. Jennifer found this technique on the Internet,” Eggers explains. Another specific request of the Tobianskys was a little more challenging: a ceiling mirror. Eggers admits he wasn’t sure how to do it safely and without main-

tenance issues, but he’d seen plenty of casinos and hotels install ceiling mirrors so he knew it could be done. He turned to the Internet and then the telephone, armed with a plethora of questions. The end result is quite a surprise. TOP: The oversized shower floor features radiant heat and is topped with 1x1-inch Walker Zanger glass tile. BOTTOM: The shower features a Kohler digital interfacing, allowing the homeowners to pre-program the body sprays and rain showerhead.

The approximately 6x4-foot ceiling mirror is made of mylar—the same substance used for balloons except with a much higher reflective value. It satisfied both safety and maintenance concerns, while successfully imitating the look of a mirror.

Soothing sanctuary Seeing the bathroom at night is a whole new experience from Jennifer and Joel’s morning routine. Ambiance and track lighting installed in the ceiling and floor give the room an even more stunning appearance. “I really love it at night after the sun sets. It’s extremely soothing because of the way they designed the lighting,” explains Jennifer, who adds that a light in the shower can also be pre-set to go on and off as a security feature. In addition to the essentials, the combination of materials, finishes and lighting tops off this already over-the-top spa. And yet a point Jennifer emphasizes is the bathroom’s functionality. “It has the wow-factor but it’s so easy to maintain. It seems brand new every single day we walk through the door. We don’t take it for granted.” ABOVE: Track lighting installed beneath the black matte cabinetry creates a soothing look at night.

The popularity of contemporary décor has some people reinventing their spaces to capture the latest styles, but Joy and Joel Campbell were content to carry on with a traditional décor when remodeling their master bathroom. “Our home is, and always has been, traditional. We love the classic, comfortable feel of the traditional style,” says Joy.

The existing color palette of soft blue and cream in the Campbells’ master bedroom was continued into their remodeled master bath in order to create continuity and to evoke a sense of serenity and sophistication. The timeless style of the master bath is punctuated by the cabinetry, mirror frames, crown molding and paneled bathtub all finished in heirloom white with an espresso glaze. Choices were made carefully and collectively by the design team which includes: contractor Paul Bauscher,

bathroom trends interior designer Karen Lied and cabinetry designer Jay Messner. Joy loves the additional storage her new cabinetry provides as it keeps all the counter surfaces free and clear of typical bathroom clutter. Complementing the light finish on the cabinetry is the rich, yet understated Creama Marfil marble on the countertops, floor and shower walls.

A spa with a view What really warms up the space literally,

however, is the heated floor and towel radiator, both of which are programmable. The towel radiator not only warms your bath towel, but dries your wet towels almost immediately. Having a warm, dry towel at hand is important when you spend a lot of time in a Pure Air Jacuzzi tub—Joy’s favorite element in the new space. These tranquil tubs release a gentle burst of millions of air bubbles that fill the bath from top to bottom, and can be enjoyed while using bath salts or aromatic oils. As for Joel, his favorite aspect of the new bath is the enlarged shower and oversized handheld showerhead. Originally the bathroom had two windows which are now combined into one large window to maximize the Campbells’ view of the woods. With a view that beautiful, it only made sense to mimic the natural beauty of the outdoors through fabric patterns of tree branches in soft color palettes that match the master bedroom and bath. Continuing the theme of nature is the original watercolor artwork over the tub which shows a bird resting on a tree branch. Joy’s mother, who is now 92 years old, was with Joy when she purchased the picture over 30 years ago. Shortly after buying the picture, Joy put it in storage at her mother’s farmhouse and forgot about it. Only recently did she find the picture and discover how perfectly it fit the theme and scheme of her remodeled bathroom.

Do you have a reservation? Joy and Joel aren’t the only ones who like the new master bath. “Since it has doubled in size, our kids like to sneak in and use the new shower,” Joy says. “And

Keeping its two masters happy, the bath has a relaxing tub with a view for Joy (opposite), and a spacious shower retreat for Joel (above).

our painter commented that the room is so quiet and sophisticated, he feels like he’s walking into the Greenbrier Hotel.” The Campbells don’t mind at all having their new master bath compared to a prominent, five-star luxury resort.

PRIOR TO KITCHEN SOLUTIONS: If you wanted new kitchen cabinets, you had two options: New Cabinets or Refacing. NEW CABINETS: Coupled with the high cost of the cabinets come demolition, dust, countertop removal and reinstallation, plumbing, painting, cabinet installation, not to mention the inconvenience of not having your kitchen for quite some time. It’s a remodel! REFACING: With the cost being almost the same as new cabinets, the end result certainly does not justify the cost. faucets. So what do your faucets say about you?

Sleek. Simple. Sophisticated. These are the words sweeping the design world—from cell phones to plasma screens to automobiles. Blending European and urban tastes, modern faucets make a statement that “less is more.” Although lines are thin and details are minimal, artistry is eyecatching rather than sacrificed. The Solar by Graff is a geometric collage of cubes, rectangles and right angles. The floor-mounted version even has the ability to use shadows to create a dramatic effect. Graff’s Luna—inspired by the shape of the moon— functions as not only a faucet but as a wall-mounted sculpture of modern art. The success of the 90 Degree by Moen is based on simplicity—intensity is magnified by the lack of superfluous detail.

bathroomtrends Classic faucet styles capture the romantic nostalgia of bygone eras. These signature styles invoke the sensibilities of the time and have a powerful, yet subtle, effect on the observer’s mood. One example is the Pinstripe by Kohler inspired by the Art Deco Movement. With its relaxed elegance, the linear trademark pattern is reminiscent of the architecture that defined 1930s Miami Beach. Leland by Delta is a teapot inspired single-handle spout with a farmhouse appeal, while Delta’s Victorian is a more formal display of elegance. Traveling further back in time, the Kelston by Kohler evokes the familiar comfort of the 18th century’s grandeur and comfort.

RSVP While once a place for personal hygiene, the bathroom has become a sanctuary for relaxation, de-stressing and pampering. Decorative accents are popular ways to achieve a luxurious hotel or spa ambiance. Brizo offers RSVP in cobalt and crystal dome finials that can be added to faucet handles to create a high-end, glamorous atmosphere. The Mossi by THG celebrates the fanciful and decadent with beaded handles that make every day feel special. Showhouse by Moen created the Vivid Collection to turn small spaces into big statements of style. The cascading water flowing from lime glass is a detail that adds to a luxurious effect.

Organic

The “Go Green” movement has made its way into bathroom design. Curves and asymmetrical shapes, as seen in Showhouse by Moen’s Organic faucets, have become popular design elements that take their cue from nature. Showhouse by Moen’s Bamboo faucet channels water to flow over the edge of a high-arc spout to emulate the experience of water in natural falls, creating a soothing visual and auditory experience. The butterfly handles by THG create a mood of carefree whimsy and airiness that inspired by the delicate playfulness of these creatures known as flowers with wings. continued >

Today opposing finishes grace each accessory in the bathroom, in contrast to coordinating faucets, towel racks and other fixtures. The contemporary look of chrome and brushed nickel make them popular choices for sink faucets. “These are classic finishes that will never go out of style and complement any design from traditional to modern,” says Jerry Schaadt, kitchen and bath designer for Florence Winteriors. Polished chrome and black finishes appeal to the sense of a sleek and clean space that complement modern faucets. Darker finishes, such as oil-rubbed bronze and aged pewter, achieve a Renaissanceinspired, old-world style. A “living” finish, such as copper, develops a patina over time due to the oils from hands touching the faucet. This creates a worn feel similar to the charm of antiques and heirlooms.

Whether your style is modern, traditional, nature-loving or luxurious, there has never been a better time to let your artistic flair show, and flow, in home design. “In the past, every design decision was made to match all the elements in a room,” says Donna Taylor, showroom manager at Wilder Winnelson. “Now, you see a more eclectic representation. People are mixing up styles and finishes to achieve a unique and personalized space.”
