It’s inevitable. The paper edition of the Housetrends magazine you hold in your hands will be replaced with a digital version within the next few years. I must admit that until recently (even with over 30 years of publishing experience) I did not believe the industry could transform itself that quickly...but I am starting to believe otherwise. There were twelve people at my house during this recent Memorial Day weekend. Eight of our twelve guests had iPads close at hand. And two of our three children work in the digital communications industry. This leap to the new technology will act as an impetus for the move to digital media. Imagine walking into a tile shop with your favorite Housetrends articles from the last five years and showing the clerk the kind of tile you need for your project on your screen. We could expand on Shauna Lehman’s kitchen remodel, featured on page 18 of this issue, and show you a video of the designer discussing her fabric, paint and flooring choices. Imagine the fun you are going to have when every page can be expanded to provide additional information of interest to you. We are already well on our way to digital success with housetrends.com, our Facebook (Housetrends Columbus) and Twitter (HousetrendsCbus) pages, and The Buzz, our bi-monthly newsletter, which is packed with great projects from all five Housetrends cities. Join us online today. It is our link to your future. Celebrate life every day,

By the end of the initial consult, our designer’s vision for the space was perfectly aligned with our needs, desires and ideas. Our beautiful new kitchen has changed our family dynamic. We find ourselves gathered in the kitchen the majority of the time now and have even made a new tradition to cook Sunday dinner together as a family. We would not hesitate to recommend J.S. Quaint English Quality Bexley kitchen makeover in keeping with Cotswold tradition By Jaron M. Terry | Photos by Daniel Feldkamp/Visual Edge Imaging Old-world charm spills from one Tudor-style home in Bexley with an authentic exterior characterized by warm sandstone, steeply gabled slate rooflines and deep bow windows set with small panes of leaded glass. Yet inside this 1920s charmer, the homeowners were ready to add a bit more space and a few modern conveniences. continued >

Room to grow With their oldest son only five when the family bought the property eight years ago, it seemed the already small existing kitchen became even smaller as he—and his two younger siblings—grew. “It was obvious we needed to build an addition if we were to have enough room to create the timbered-ceiling, old English barn style kitchen I’d always dreamed of,” says homeowner Shauna Lehman, ASID, who is a New York City-trained interior designer. Shauna and her husband, Mike, contracted Renovations Unlimited to turn her idea for an expansive kitchen that could accommodate entertaining and casual dining as well as food preparation into a reality. “We had two main goals for this 14x30-foot addition,” says Todd Schmidt, president of the Grove City-based design/build home renovation and remodeling company. “We worked closely with architect Gary Alexander to integrate the exterior of the new section with the character of the historic neighborhood, while meeting Shauna’s goals to create a unique, warm interior that marries old and new components.”
Sentimental favorites Shauna’s extensive collection of blue and white Transferware, a style of ceramics and dinnerware developed in 18th-century England, is right at home in her modern, yet traditional kitchen. Nooks and crannies interspersed among the inset paneled doors of the glazed cabinetry, along with the mantel-like shelf above the range, provide plenty of display areas for her antique collection, many pieces of which belonged to her mother. continued >
OVERLEAF LEFT: The addition, shown to the left in this photo, blends seamlessly into the older section of the home. Among Shauna’s favorite conveniences is her wall oven with “speed cook” technology, which combines microwave, convection and conventional technologies. In addition, the warming drawer, spice drawer, and bread drawer with built-in cutting board, as well as baskets for potatoes and onions, are welcome additions. The gleaming beauty of polished granite on the furniture-like island and countertops complements the Barclay farm sink. In contrast, are the natural wood, exposed ceiling beams, which were reclaimed from timbers on a family member’s farm. Graceful, custom-designed ironwork chandeliers add warmth and interest to the area. “It’s hard to believe that the bow window is brand new,” notes Shauna, who praised Schmidt’s attention to detail in precisely matching the addition’s window to existing windows on the other side of the home. “The wood trim surrounding the small panes is completely authentic to the home, and from the outside, one would think this space had always existed,” she adds. Schmidt notes that although the existing window features actual leaded glass, the new window incorporates today’s highperformance energy-efficient glass. He explained that a black spacer bar inserted between two panes of glass, along with lead strips on top of the glass—both inside and out—give the window the appropriate appearance. “One of my favorite aspects of my new kitchen is actually what we did with the old kitchen,” chuckles Shauna. “We were not sure what to do with the space, which was too large to be a mudroom, but too small for a breakfast room. Instead, it is the perfect cozy space for reading while sipping coffee,” she notes. The intimate hearth room, complete with new, ventless working gas fireplace, is just off the new kitchen, inviting family members to linger and chat while she prepares family meals. continued > OPPOSITE: The new bow window floods the kitchen with natural light. “When I stand at either the stove or sink I can see into the sweet little space that coordinates with the new kitchen while retaining its own character,” she says. The original oak flooring of the existing kitchen—now hearth room—is carried through to the new space, helping to further integrate the areas, while glazed ceiling beams further distinguish it. “Todd did such a great job with the hearth and surround of the fireplace— carefully hand-selecting and placing stones to create an original, century-old look for a brand-new feature,” she adds. Editor’s note: This project was on the BIA’s 22nd Annual Showcase of Remodeled Homes in May. For a great “before” photo visit www. biahomebuilders.com.

It was,
Sandy says, one of the toughest
times in her life. First she was delivered a devastating blow when her husband Steve was stricken with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) and passed away just three months after the initial diagnosis. Next her beloved sister Joyce passed away from cancer one year and almost two months later. But instead of listening to those who said not to take on any major projects during her grieving period, Sandy decided to take control of her life and do just that. Fresh start
After
a year of tragedy, a chance meeting changed this
homeowner’s life for good By Alice P. Drake | Photos by Robin Victor Goetz/RVGP, Inc.
The homeowner wanted to turn over a new leaf and make her house fit who she was after that terrible period of time, instead of staring at the same walls that saw her and her late husband entertaining friends and family while raising two children together. “I needed to make this house my own. My friends and family helped me so much through that difficult time, but I wanted to be able to share my house with people again.” Fast forward ten months later and her house has been totally transformed from average to awesome. The kitchen, family room and all the bathrooms were blown out, redesigned and remodeled by Jim Stephens of Van Gogh Capabilities and his well qualified crew with Sandy’s tastes in mind. “The projects took a long time but I trusted Jim so much because he is the best,” says Sandy. The process began with a new roof, then new Pella windows and doors were installed, which proved to be fortuitous because the contractor was Jasen Stephens, the son of Jim. When Sandy mentioned that she was thinking about remodeling her kitchen and bathrooms, Jasen directed her to his dad for the job.
Carte blanche “I was given a clean palette where I virtually designed and picked 90 percent of everything with her approval,” says Stephens. “Sandy just had faith in me.” They started with miscellaneous odds and ends throughout the house then tackled the major projects, such as the master bathroom and full bath off of the family room. Stephens worked with Bob Harrigan to create the custom vanity in the master bathroom that would work in a smaller space. continued >

under a bonus stone shelf with granite countertops that blends in nicely with the vanity.
Happily ever after After the long haul, Sandy is thrilled with her house and the outcome of the enormous renovations. As an added bonus, while working together, Sandy and Jim built a strong friendship and both feel that during the process they gained a better understanding of the importance of living their lives to the fullest.
“Bob told me I pushed him to his limit with my ideas, but he is absolutely an ace,” says Stephens. Harrigan was able to create the illusion that the cabinetry over the sink has three doors on both sides, when in fact the right side does have three functioning doors while the left side houses a pullout magnifying mirror in two faux doors. The cabinetry was designed with Sandy’s wish to conceal her beauty products and toiletries without ruining the symmetry of the piece. Receptacles were placed inside the cabinetry to hide away cords also. The curved wall was developed to answer for the skylight’s position without having to compromise shower stall space or design. The statue of the woman draped in a cloth hugging her legs was originally positioned in the living room, but was moved to the shelf at the top of the cut off column of the rounded wall for the photo shoot. That action not only brought up a fond memory for Sandy, but also fit perfectly with the theme of the master suite. “I found that statue at HomeGoods after Steve had passed, and I remember looking at it thinking the woman was me and I was going to be okay,” says Sandy. “I don’t feel alone anymore because I have a lot of people around me who love me. I might find peace when I am soaking in that tub with candles going.” Figuring out how to take the soaking tub Sandy requested and mask the spigot and valves was another challenge that kept Stephens thinking both day and night. He did not want another column in the bathroom (“That would have been gaudy and I don’t do gaudy,” states Stephens), so coming up with a solution that would work, putting the spigot in the ceiling while not freezing the pipes in the cold zone of the attic, took some serious planning. Stephens’ “Eureka!” moment came when he decided to create a box in the ceiling, which would allow the water to run out of the ceiling-mount bath filler while being able to insulate the pipes. The bathtub valves and handles are tucked away in and

Fired up!
Grill your next feast in the great outdoors By Christina Kleiner
As the temperature outside rises, we all tend to get that urge to migrate outdoors. With a cool drink in hand, one of the first things we do is fire up the grill. Summer goes hand-in-hand with outdoor barbecues, and there’s nothing quite like cooking a juicy steak or pork tenderloin. continued >

Cut pork into slices about ¼ inch thick. Drain pineapple, reserving all syrup. Blend syrup, teriyaki sauce, green onions, ginger and garlic powder; pour over pork and pineapple. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour. Meanwhile, cook rice according to package directions and prepare grill. Remove pork from marinade and grill about 5 inches from hot coals for about 5 minutes on each side or until completely cooked. Pour pineapple and remaining marinade into large skillet. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat and serve pork with sauce and pineapple over rice.
¼ cup Napoleon® Savory Chicken and Rib Spice 2 tablespoons olive oil Vegetable marinade Basting sauce Cut zucchini, red onions and sweet peppers into 1½ to 2-inch chunks and place into a large sealable container or bag. Add mushrooms and pour in marinade mixture, seal and refrigerate, turning occasionally for 2 hours. Meanwhile, cut pork tenderloin into large, 1½ to 2-inch chunks and place into a large bowl. Add ¼ cup Napoleon® Savory Chicken and Rib Spice, and 2 tablespoons olive oil to the bowl and mix well to coat pork completely. Skewer the seasoned pork, packing pieces together tightly, onto three of the skewers. Cover and set aside until needed. Remove vegetables from marinade, reserving marinade, and thread onto three skewers, pressing the vegetables together firmly. Cover and set aside. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Grill pork kebobs for 6-8 minutes, turning and brushing with basting sauce during final 2-3 minutes of cooking, until lightly charred and cooked throughout (internal temperature should be 165°F). After the first 5 minutes of cooking the pork kebobs, place vegetable kebobs onto grill. Grill vegetables for 4-6 minutes, turning and basting with reserved marinade every 1-2 minutes, or until lightly charred and tender. Move vegetable kebobs to top rack of grill to keep warm, turning occasionally while pork is cooking. Remove skewers from grill, and serve with warmed pita bread and extra basting sauce on the side.

A seldom-used soaking tub makes way for a supersized spa retreat By Karen Bradner Photos by Daniel Feldkamp/Visual Edge Imaging continued >

ABOVE: Cindy says a recently installed stone patio may have influenced her choices of materials that have a natural, rustic influence, such as slate and tumbled marble. FAR RIGHT: The EcoSmart fireplace burns denatured alcohol. OPENING PAGE: Low illumination lights run beneath the bench and provide a great night light of sorts for the space.
There are people who cherish a long soak in a warm bath with a candle or two flickering nearby. And then there are those who haven’t taken a bath in ages and think a shower is the finest way to come clean. Members of the latter segment of the population, Cindy and Mark Humphreville of Hilliard, decided that it was finally time to bid adieu to the whirlpool tub that held center stage in their master bath for more than a dozen years. “It’s hard to justify the tub taking up that much space when you hardly ever use it,” says Mark.
Out of the corner Even though they are the home’s original owners, the Humphrevilles acquired the
bath as part and parcel of a builder’s spec package. At the time, luxurious tubs were the focus of a master bath, often positioned under a large picture window while showers were relegated to a small corner of the room. If you’re a bath person, that configuration still works. If you’re a shower person, there’s good news in your world. Responding to consumer demand, designers have created numerous ways to enhance your daily shower experience with innovations such as steam showers, chromatherapy and multiple functionspecific showerheads. While you can start small—the National Kitchen and Bath Association recommends that a 36x36-inch shower as the minimum for comfort and safety—it’s a

lot more fun to dream big. Cindy and Mark knew from the start that they wanted to create a larger shower space in general. Specifically, they wanted to lose the framed door and use materials with a rustic feel to create a soothing retreat. For additional inspiration, the two perused books and magazines, marking pages with their remodel in mind. Plus, Mark picked up a few design ideas during his extensive business travels.
Getting busy When it came time to hire a contractor, the Humphrevilles visited the National Association of the Remodeling Industry of Central Ohio’s website (nari.org/centralohiochapter). They followed a link to award winners and came to an entry by
Dave Fox Design-Build Remodelers that caught their eye. “We knew Dave Fox had a good reputation in the community,” Cindy says. After meeting with Keith Sharrock, a designer with the firm, she says, “We liked what he said and didn’t feel the need to talk to anyone else.” From there the design was formed through a collaborative effort between the homeowners and Sharrock. Together they arrived at the perfect solution—doing away with the tub and creating a shower along the whole back wall of the bathroom. The new shower would consume an incredible 6x12-foot area.
Light my fire The plan was to place showerheads at each
end of the massive space until Mark came up with the idea of including a fireplace. “We wanted something that was a little unique,” says Mark. “We kicked around a few ideas, like a water feature or pool, then the idea just came to me. I hadn’t seen it anywhere else. After that, the team at Dave Fox took over, did some research and figured out a way to make it work.” According to Sharrock, the challenge was in keeping the cost in line with the budget. Traditional gas fireplaces need piping and exterior venting which made that option extremely complicated and expensive. Knowing Mark wanted to add a bit of ambience rather than a dramatic heat source, Sharrock and his team found a small manufacturer in New Zealand who had what was needed. continued >

bathroomtrends The two-sided fireplace is inset into a wall that runs between the bath and bedroom. While it does provide added warmth for the shower, Mark especially likes the effect it creates at night from the bedroom. A long, low bench in a dry area near the fireplace is a perfect place for toweling off and resting a morning cup of coffee. This is a spot that makes great sense to Sharrock. “It’s great to have a place to towel dry and never get any water on the main floor,” he says. “That’s the way they do it in Japan.” Above the bench, a window made of a vertically-patterned rain glass diffuses the view from outside, while a clear upper section lets the Humphrevilles enjoy glimpses of backyard treetops.
No cold feet Although most of the focus was on the shower, the rest of the space got a bit of a facelift as well. Since the existing cabinets were high quality and in great shape, they stayed. Countertops were swapped out, lighting was changed and vessel sinks and mirrors were moved in. New floor tiles hide radiant heat technology. “I love the floors,” says Cindy. “It’s nice to not hit cold tiles with bare feet in the morning.”
World class Despite its size, thanks to a careful selection of materials and features, the new space has a lock on warmth while not missing a single functional beat. It’s the Humphrevilles’ favorite room in their home. And Sharrock is just about as pleased with the results as the homeowners. “Mark travelled the world,” he says. “I like the fact that we were able to give him a space better than what he’d experienced in all those beautiful hotels.”

A Gem for Generations Historic Upper Arlington home passed down through the family By Melanie Circle Brown Photos by Daniel Feldkamp/ Visual Edge Imaging

When
city founders began
developing Upper Arlington in 1915, they called it the “Country Club District”— designed with curvilinear streets, parks and green spaces. This original section of the city has since been placed on the National Register of Historic Places and is noted for its significant number of homes with Revival style architecture. Visitors on the 2011 tour will get a rare opportunity to see inside some of Upper Arlington’s architectural gems.
A taste of the tour One gem is the home of Paige and Gerard Schlembach. Their 1926 stone home’s architecture is Colonial Classical Revival. Paige’s grandparents, Fred and Louise Hirsch, purchased the property in 1943 and it has been in the family’s hands for five generations. Paige is this generation’s guardian of the family legacy and keepsakes including her great grandmother’s wedding gown. The original part of the home has classic features: a fireplace in every room, pickled knotty pine in the library, built-in corner cabinets enhanced with a decorative scallop shell in the dining room, leaded glass windows and antique chandeliers and sconces throughout. Most of the lighting fixtures were acquired by Paige’s grandparents during trips to Europe. The Schlembachs recently completed an extensive addition to the house which more than doubled the square footage. They had the ultimate control over the project since Gerard is the owner of The Millennium Group, a general contractor. continued > OPENING SPREAD: Built-in cupboards, a fireplace with a wood storage cabinet, and a crystal chandelier Paige’s grandparents bought in Europe are some of the interesting details in the dining room. OPPOSITE: The original front door needed to be replaced so the Schlembachs chose to have it replicated to maintain the home’s historic character. TOP RIGHT: Just one of the home’s outdoor porches that offers a peaceful retreat. BOTTOM RIGHT: The sunroom is original to the home. The window on the left is actually part of a pocket door which can partition the sunroom and dining room. INSET: Virginia Hirsch Pickens (right) lived in the Upper Arlington house with her parents and her grandfather, William I. Jones, DDS (left). Virginia’s daughter lives there now with her husband and children, making five generations who have called it “home.”

“It was our goal to have the new section blend seamlessly into the old and stay true to the home’s historic character,” says Paige. One of the first challenges they faced was matching the stone exterior. “This was very important to us and we spent the time necessary to find the right stone,” she says. The living room in the 1926 portion of the house is sunken with two steps leading down to the room. The Schlembachs mirrored that design feature in the addition with two steps down into the great room. They matched the red oak floors which continue seamlessly from one end of the house to the other. In their quest to tie old and new together, no detail was
too small; the same hardware was found and incorporated.
Something old, something new The new kitchen is an entertainer’s dream. A center island seats six amid a large open room. For Paige, the design began with the kitchen sink. “I fell in love with a Farmhouse style copper sink which became our starting point,” she says. Paige wanted the sink, not the cooktop, in the island, to focus on the beauty of the copper. The maple cabinets were custom built by Handcraft Cabinets and have a lightly distressed, glazed finish. Paige preferred the unique look of 8-inch tiles for the island countertop being the
kitchen’s centerpiece. The Schlembachs decided on granite for the other countertops in the kitchen. Adjoining the kitchen is an entertaining area with a second copper sink in a peninsula topped with checkerboard patterned butcher block. This area houses a second oven, microwave, a second dishwasher, and additional cabinets with leaded glass fronts. continued > ABOVE: The family’s black Labrador retriever, Luke, relaxes in the inviting kitchen. RIGHT: Guests in the kitchen can spill over into the coffered-ceiling great room which has a bar area, large screen television and lots of seating.

In their quest to tie old and new together, no detail was too small.
Back to the future When Paige Schlembach was asked whether their home could be included in the Upper Arlington tour, her immediate response was, “I’d be honored.” She and her husband took great care to preserve the history in their home linking together generations past and present, and planning for the future.

ounter Unique countertop options to add a little spice to your kitchen By Christina Kleiner If you ask a group of cooks what they consider to be the most important element in their kitchen, you’ll probably receive a wide range of answers. Those who love to bake will probably say their oven, while others might say their gas range or warming drawer. More than likely, none of them will mention their countertops. F Unless you are going to prepare dinner on the floor, countertops are a necessity in any kitchen. For the past few years, granite has dominated the kitchen design industry due to its beauty and durability. But in addition to natural stone, there are several other materials available that create unique countertops. continued >

From sidewalk to kitchen Concrete is no longer relegated to the sidewalk or patio. Kitchen designers are getting more requests for concrete countertops from homeowners looking to create a unique, one-of-a-kind design in their kitchens. The countertops are made of a combination of cement, light aggregates and additives such as fiber reinforcement and acrylic. Some type of reinforcement is used such as structural steel, wire mesh or fiberglass for added support. Once the countertops are cured they are polished and then sealed. The type of seal, method and number of coats varies. Some fabricators mix seals into the concrete before it is poured, others apply several coats after the polishing process. Josh Johnson, owner of J. Aaron, a concrete and wood countertop fabricator, says concrete is a great option for people who are having a hard time finding a granite that fits their needs. “Sometimes the kitchen tile, cabinets or flooring dictate what they should use as countertops. While they might love the look of granite, it’s too busy for the kitchen’s design,” he says. Most fabricators agree that the biggest benefit to selecting concrete countertops is the vast custom options available, such as color. “We’ve had customers want the countertops to match their window curtains, a rug or the color of their backsplash tile,” says Lisa Potvin of Tampa Bay, Florida-based Concrete-N-Counters. Besides the color selection, many fabricators say they also add extra materials to the concrete to create a truly custom look. Potvin has added crushed sea shells and recycled glass bottles to the concrete before it is poured. “It allows the customer to use their imagination and create a look that is their own,” she explains. Design options are also virtually limitless. M Concrete Studios in Dayton, Ohio has incorporated integrated sinks, drain boards and custom inlays in its concrete countertops. “We’ve added built-in cutting boards, copper piping, one couple wanted to add the hand and footprints of their four children to the concrete backsplash pieces,” says Zack Mehaffie of M Concrete Studios. “The design options are probably the best part, we’re coming up with new ideas all of the time.” Caring for concrete isn’t much different than caring for granite. Experts do not recommend cutting on it or setting hot pots or pans directly on to the surface. Just like natural stone, acidic foods such as lemon juice, or wine can stain the concrete if not cleaned up properly.

ABOVE: Since they are constructed to a homeowner’s specifications, stainless steel countertops can be installed without seams.
Heavy metals Stainless steel is one metal that continues to be a hot commodity in the kitchen appliance industry and it is becoming an increasingly popular countertop material. Stainless steel is a good choice for anyone looking to create a contemporary or industrial-looking kitchen. The countertops combine alloy steel, chromium for rust resistance and plywood for strength. Stainless steel is nonporous, resistant to water and heat, doesn’t chip and requires little maintenance. Special finishes can also be used to hide fingerprints and scratches. Installers do not recommend using abrasive cleaners, which can scratch the surface. If you are looking for a metal that has a little more warmth than stainless steel, consider copper. Copper countertops are the perfect complement to both traditional and modern kitchens. Left natural, unsealed copper will change color and develop a beautiful
patina over time. Unsealed copper also fights the growth of germs, thanks to its antimicrobial surface. By sealing or regularly polishing copper, it will retain its shiny, new-penny-like salmon color. Copper is relatively soft, so it is susceptible to denting and scratching. This is often considered an added bonus because these features produce a unique distressed look over time.
Natural elements Kitchen designers have been installing wood butcher block tops in kitchens for quite some time. Aside from their obvious function as a built-in chopping block or cutting board, wood countertops create a warm and timeless look in both traditional and contemporary kitchens. Hardwoods such as maple and oak are the most often used countertop woods. However, kitchen design-

ers are seeing an increase in the demand for exotic woods, such as wenge and Brazilian cherry. Wood countertops are easy to clean and stains or small scratches can be sanded out. Experts recommend treating the countertops with mineral oil once a month to bring out the rich luster of the wood. Bamboo is also making its way into the kitchen. Experts say bamboo is 16% harder than maple, making it a very sturdy countertop material. However, since it is porous, it is also susceptible to water damage and scratching. Once installed as a countertop, the bamboo is laminated with a food grade adhesive to create a safe environment for food preparation. Bamboo is also considered a renewable resource since it can be sanded and refinished to look like a new countertop. Adding new countertops to your kitchen is a great way to
update an outdated space. Your countertops can serve as the focal point of the kitchen, or help set the tone of the entire space. Be sure to select the material that best suits your cooking and design needs. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box, after all, you’ll be using the countertops every day.
