Art is certainly a visceral way of defining the person who occupies the area it adorns. But there is more to a home than what hangs on its walls. There is also something to be learned by what hangs in the air… and by the interaction of the folks that occupy the space. I’ve visited the house that is featured on the cover of this issue on various occasions. I’ve had a dinner in the library, enjoyed conversation about the struggles and accomplishments of those gathered and watched my friend who owns the place roll on the floor with his granddaughter. My latest trip to this beautiful Powell home was for a benefit for Aids Resource Center Ohio. On each trip the house seemed to embrace its occupants and make us all comfortable in its quaint grandness. One of the final touches to this grand estate’s reclamation was the recent kitchen renovation which now flows out to an expansive terrace— perfect for the look of the home and the lifestyle of the homeowner. Some of our best projects are so perfectly tailored to the home that they appear part of the original design. That certainly can be said of the freshly updated cottage-style gardens that grace an elegant Bexley home featured on page 42 and the Westerville master bath, on page 59, which found light and roominess by raising its roof. But there’s hardly a better way to put your stamp on your own home than by hanging art that gives a hint of the dreams of those who live inside. We’ve included photos of several spaces we think are particularly successful in telling these stories. Let’s see if they get you dreaming as well. Celebrate life every day,

THE SECRET of my GARDEN My garden whispers a secret. If you listen you’ll see it tell Of how it dances through the seasons and of the treasures that, within it dwell. Don’t run. Don’t yell. Don’t hurry. You must slow your pace to see. Look closely at the bud in bloom, And wait for the bumble bee. Breathe peace, Patience, And silence. Let your body absorb the calm. My garden whispers a story. Its secret is nature’s song. S. Mesarchik Landscape Architect

Entertaining takes center stage in Powell renovation By Melanie Circle Brown | Photos by Daniel Feldkamp/Visual Edge Imaging

Nestled among the rolling hills of Powell, Ohio, lies several hundred acres —a “Camelot” of sorts— for four generations of the same family. Anchoring the property is a French farmhouse originally designed in the 1970s by noted architect George Acock.

Since that time, the 10,000-squarefoot house has undergone several transformations, the most recent being a complete reconfiguration and renovation of the kitchen wing completed in late 2011. A collaboration by Dave Stock and Doug Stone of Stock & Stone Architects and Rick Miller of Miller VanOrder Interior Design, the new footprint is a masterful interplay of light infused spaces, illuminated by a bank of five sets of French doors that span an entire kitchen wall. “The total renovation took over 12 months to complete and the results are fabulous,” says Mark Hardymon of Mark Hardymon Builders, Inc. who served as general contractor. “The new kitchen terrace is a work of art in itself.” The homeowner’s love of art is reflected everywhere in the home, from the artwork gracing the rooms to the music of Gershwin, Lerner and Lowe, or Rodgers and Hammerstein playing in the background. “It’s an incredibly welcoming home,” says Miller, adding, “There has never been a stranger in this house.”

Let the Sunshine In –Hair “Contemporary with a twist” is how Miller describes the design goal of the kitchen renovation. The room’s original Douglas fir ceiling support beams were retained and a clerestory—high windows above the first floor—was added to allow maximum light to filter throughout the space. “My client was really excited about the addition of the French doors and windows which are handcrafted from steel and come from France; they give the kitchen a chic sophistication,” notes Miller.

Most People Long For Another Island –South Pacific Opening the kitchen up by removing an existing wall had one drawback: loss of cabinet space. Miller decided that the new island should be as deep as possible to maximize storage. continued >

The designer selected an iridescent glass tile for the backsplash behind the cooktop because of its basketweave design and gold tones. The red stepladder is a well-loved Christmas gift, handmade by the homeowner’s son, and provides easy access to the cabinets above the refrigerator and freezer. OPENING SPREAD: A majestic fountain, created by Jonathan Spayde of Landfare Ltd., forms a visual wall for the terrace. The red painting in front is a giclÊe print by artist Mario Sergio.

8/10/12 4:28:00 PM

“Because the new island is larger than most—12'5" by 5'—we had to use two slabs of marble for the counter. The marble the client selected is Calacatta Gold which has a lot of flowing movement, so we chose to book-match the two slabs,” Miller says, explaining that book-matching is a fabrication and installation technique where the patterns in the two slabs mirror the image of each other. “The effect is subtle but mesmerizing,” he says. The homeowner liked the idea of a farmhouse sink, and Miller found one in hammered recycled copper with a brushed nickel finish. “It looks like a farm sink but contemporary,” he notes. The Viking cooktop now rests in an alcove on the back stone wall which used to store wood for the five fireplaces. To bring out the golden color of the stone, Miller suggested an iridescent amber glass tile backsplash. “Rick never ceases to amaze me—the interplay between the glass texture, the basketweave design and the stone is nothing short of genius,” the homeowner notes, “It’s one of my favorite design elements in the kitchen.” The color in the kitchen is the same neutral used throughout the home. “While the palette is the same, each room takes on a different feel because of the architectural nuances and artwork,” Miller explains. “My client has a wide aesthetic range and is not the type to contain himself to one certain ‘look’.” BELOW: A study of John Singer Sargent’s “The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit” by Savannah artist Jim Pennington stands sentry over the butler’s pantry. BOTTOM RIGHT: The homeowner had several handillustrated letters framed that his mother sent to his son at summer camp. The collection hangs in the hallway off of the kitchen.

BELOW: Multiple groupings of outdoor furniture are arranged for intimate conversation clusters. OPPOSITE TOP: Light floods in through steel French doors and from the windows in the clerestory above.

The cabinets in the kitchen are custom-made painted poplar by D.L. Atkinson in Grove City. For visual interest the island, which is a different style, was painted a shade lighter than the walls and cabinets. A flagstone and wood floor was replaced with dark walnut planks. The homeowner humorously notes, “The Old World patina of the floor has been meticulously crafted by my three-year-old granddaughter, Isabeau Raine, who has a penchant for only wearing her Disney princess high heels.”

Summertime –Porgy and Bess The hallway off the kitchen leads to a renovated butler’s pantry that Miller wanted to finish differently from the kitchen. “It is a smaller space with a lower ceiling so we used a darker shade to make it moody and a bit romantic,” the designer says. Lining the hallway is a collection of 28 individually framed letters. “We are a family of letter writers,” the homeowner explains. “One summer my 12 year old son went away to camp and was having a tough time being away. My mother wrote him over 50 letters that summer-one each day. To make them even more special, she embellished each letter with a hand-drawn illustration, sometimes in watercolor, sometimes in pen and ink, and sometimes both. When viewed in their entirety, they are the most remarkable continued on page 29 >

An Evening

Event

Event photos © 2012 Robert Hughes Photography On a recent warm spring evening, the Powell homeowner featured on the previous pages invited over 200 guests to stroll through his expansive gardens and enjoy an evening of great food, drink, music and conversation. The focus of the event was to call attention to individuals and businesses who have been leading supporters of AIDS Resource Center Ohio (ARC). Honorees included Dr. Rob Crane, Tom Davis, Mark Morrow, Jeff Chaddock, and The Limited Brands. Catering and bar management was provided by Rigsby’s Kitchen; floral design by Steven Cox Flowers and event coordination by Sally Blue. “The generosity and ingenuity by the host,” says Blue, “resulted in an extraordinarily elegant party for past donors to ARC.” TOP: Left to right: Dan Brown, Attorney; Sally Blue, Elliot Twelve Tree; and Ron Arps, artist ABOVE: Left to right: Jonathan Spayde, Landfare; Sam Wilder, Housetrends; Brenda Dean, Huntington Bank RIGHT: Guests gather to pay tribute to ARC honorees.

Art for Life

The largest charity art auction in Central Ohio will take place September 22 at the Columbus Museum of Art. Art for Life has been the most significant fundraiser for AIDS Resource Center Ohio (formerly known as the Columbus AIDS Task Force) since its premiere in 1989. Art for Life is a special evening of celebration set against the backdrop of amazing art that has been donated by local and national artists to help support AIDS Resource Center Ohio and the much needed programs and services provided for our community. The Honorary Chair for the evening will be Dr. E. Gordon Gee, President of The Ohio State University. For more information please visit www.artforlifecolumbus.org

example of strength, love, guidance, and support I have ever seen. I cherish these more than anything I have. They are the first of my possessions I would rescue if there were a fire in the house,” he says unequivocally. “They are absolutely charming.” echoes Rick Miller, and recommends making a template prior to hanging a large collection such as this. “I take the size of the walls and how many pieces I’ve got and plan it all out ahead of time. You don’t want to just wing it or it will look like the St. Valentine’s Day massacre,” he explains with a laugh.

There’s Simply Not a More Congenial Spot –Camelot The kitchen’s French doors open onto an expansive terrace. Dramatically arching cedar beams form a peak that defines an open-air room. A cut limestone fireplace creates one “wall” of the terrace and a striking granite fountain creates another. The floor is comprised of flagstones, a portion of which were recycled from the old kitchen. The terrace has a dining table and several conversation nooks, perfect for the intimate parties the homeowner enjoys. “The art of entertaining is a lost art these days,” he says. “Today, I prefer much smaller gatherings to the ones I used to host ten years ago. For me, eight to ten people with a space where everyone can sit and relax with a glass of wine letting the conversation flow is just perfect,” he notes. Throughout, there are combinations of textures and dimensions. “Any good design involves layers,” Miller reflects. “Here we had the original architecture with beams and heavy stone. Then we added sleek steel doors and windows, balanced by a gutsy island topped with eye-catching marble. Balance, harmony, and a workable space—all achieved!” Certainly not a more congenial spot for happily-ever-aftering, this Camelot.

Study in Contrast

Although prevailing wisdom dictates gallery-white walls, art placed against the right intense and saturated hue jumps off the wall as an immediate, arresting focal point.

Shades in the Garden Blue is the featured hue in one Bexley backyard sanctuary By Connie Ruhe | Photos by JE Evans “I love blue and I love blue in the yard,” says Beth Grimes Flood. “I love different textures and different shades of green and red in the trees and shrubs, but I particularly love accents of blue.” Her garden of evergreens, hydrangeas, roses and boxwoods complements the country manor style of her Bexley home. ✽ Beth has been happy to share her yard in past Bexley Women’s Club House & Garden Tours, but she calls her late husband, Pete Grimes, “the real gardener.” ✽ “He’s the one who had the vision,” she insists. “I always said he used to plant and grow the flowers and the vegetables, and I would cut them, arrange them or cook them!” ✽ She describes Pete’s work as a “free-form cottage garden.” He didn’t try to tame every plant, and he placed numerous pots of vivid annuals along the yard’s rambling stone walkway.

landscape trends Growing time After Pete’s passing and her later marriage to Tom Flood, Beth felt the time was right to make changes in the garden. Tom found a drawing of a courtyard that appealed to her penchant for symmetry, so she shared it with accomplished landscape architect John Reiner, ASLA, of Oakland Nursery. “I love working with John Reiner,” Beth says. “He just sensed from the beginning what we were trying to create here. We were looking to give the garden a more formal and tranquil feeling.” She also wanted to preserve certain elements from the earlier garden. They had enjoyed the view of a small pond from their kitchen’s bay window. Its focal point was a bronze statue of a young girl sipping water from cupped hands. Friend and prominent Columbus artist Joan Wobst, best known for the Umbrella Girl statue in Schiller Park, had sculpted it. “When I saw it, I immediately loved it,” Beth remembers. She also was fond of the Japanese maples and blue spruces out back, and she wanted to keep the climbing rose bush next to the garage. Reiner found a way to incorporate soothing blues and Beth’s favorite features in his design, and succeeded, as he says, in “creating spaces for people to be in and to create views with interesting subspaces.” The pond was relocated for visibility from the kitchen and the family room, and enlarged to about four by eight feet. Now a paved patio connects doors from the kitchen and family room and creates space for hot tea on cool mornings, dinners for two and small, informal gatherings. A grassy quad extends from the patio; it’s anchored by a shrub at each corner. The patio and matching path surround the courtyard and are lined with boxwoods. Mature trees, including Japanese maples in deep red and bright green and blue spruces, are visible beyond the courtyard. As Beth says, “When you’re in the house and you’re looking back, you feel you’re in another little world.” And she’s pleased with Reiner’s suggestion to plant rows of lavender blue Walker’s Low catmint along side Knock Out roses—her favorite—in two shades of pink along the driveway next to the garage. “It’s a meditative space bounded by all kinds of really wonderful plants, hydrangeas and Japanese maples—and color—but there’s a real beauty, simplicity and elegance to that garden,” Reiner says. “It has a contemplative quality and very interesting spatial definition that makes it superior to many of the larger gardens in the area. “In the design process you want to incorporate and reflect the personality of the owner,” he adds. “She’s a gracious lady and it’s a beautiful garden.” Lavender blue Walker’s Low catmint and pale pink Knock Out roses border the driveway. OPENING SPREAD: Joan Wobst’s sculpture of a young girl drinking from a pool of water found just the right spot in this garden.

Time to smell the roses With mature, lush plants surrounding the house she has lived in for nearly 28 years, Beth knew she could use a bit of help managing the maintenance side of things, so she hired Beth Humphrey to tend the grounds three days a week, which makes the garden all the more enjoyable for the Floods. “I appreciate my home and my garden,” Beth says. “At this point of my life, I’m enjoying being in such a peaceful setting!”

EXPERIENCE THE DIFFERENCE WITH NARI

NARI’S HOME IMPROVEMENT SHOWCASE: A TOUR OF 16 NEWLY REMODELED HOMES www.TrustNARI.org

NARI will be hosting its Home Improvement Showcase — A Tour of Central Ohio’s Finest Remodeled Homes. The tour takes place Saturday, Sept. 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 30, from noon to 5 p.m. This is your opportunity to meet the professionals, ask questions and see firsthand the quality work being done by talented remodelers and designers right here in central Ohio. We invite homeowners to see for themselves why consumers say NARI members are making the difference in their remodeling experiences. For those who have had difficulty locating a skilled contractor, NARI is the best resource in which to turn. NARI contractors undergo a thorough background check and are screened using stringent criteria for experience and craftsmanship. Remodeling your home is a decision that will have a lasting impact on your quality of life. However, finding a professional remodeler that matches your needs and expectations is no easy task. These professionals work in your home — the most intimate and private space you have. Even with all the efforts of social networking and personal advertising, meeting face to face with potential remodelers is still the best way to discover whether you click with a company. Connecting homeowners with professional home remodelers is part of what the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) has been doing for the past 27 years.

Todd Schmidt, CR, President, NARI of Central Ohio, Owner, Renovations Unlimited

Sept. 29 & 30, 2012 Sat., 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. • Sun., Noon to 5 p.m. $10 full tour/$3 single site. Tickets available at each tour location. Visit WWW.TRUSTNARI.ORG for show details. Home-improvement and remodeling tours provide great ways to meet multiple remodelers in person within a single afternoon. It’s like speed dating for your home — focus on pursuing the professionals that you feel best match your needs. Attending the NARI Home Improvement Showcase, to be held Sept. 29 and 30, will provide an intimate environment where homeowners can view remodelers’ work firsthand. Touching a smooth countertop, seeing the details in the craftsmanship and observing the depth of the space are all valuable details for anyone thinking about a remodel. Following a few guidelines will help you get the most out of a home-remodeling tour. 1. Don’t Limit Yourself Even if your next project is a bathroom, don’t skip a house just because its project does not fall in the bathroom category. You might miss out on meeting a professional with whom you connect. Focus on design elements you are drawn to within the projects. Companies have additional portfolios that provide examples of other work they have done.

2. You are the Priority Central Ohio’s leading remodeling companies participate in home showcases to meet people with a keen interest in remodeling their home. Keep this in mind, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. These individuals have the information you’re looking for, and they want to share it with you. Plus, the more you interact with a company, the better idea you’ll have as to whether or not they are the right company for you. 3. Note What You Like Keep track of what you like at each home on the tour. Maybe you hate the floors, but love the cabinets. Focus on the positive rather than the negative. What you like always trumps what you don’t, so try not to judge a company based on another customer’s quirky selection. The key to viewing custom remodeled homes is to understand that your room will be a space with your customizations, not your neighbors’. – By NARI Member Annie Coleman of Kresge Contracting, www.kresgecontracting.com

For most people, souvenirs from their world travels range from costly original oil paintings to tacky plastic key chains and everything in between. But one Westerville couple, who wanted to be reminded every day of how much they enjoyed the simplicity and elegance of the San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara, California, brought home details of its sea-inspired décor. “We fell in love with the 1940s Hollywood glamour of the cottage we stayed in,” recalls the homeowner. “The cool marble, custom cabinetry and beaded board trim really spoke to us and we knew it was right for our bathroom remodel, which was already under way,” she notes. Frequent international travelers, the couple had moved into their Highland Lakes home four years ago and had

already begun working with design-build remodeler, J.S. Brown & Co., to modernize the kitchen, outdoor area and master bathroom of their 20-year-old home. The upstairs bathroom was dark and felt closed-in, with only a small dormer window set between a built-in tub and shower. With the outside walls at only five feet, the shower and toilet areas were extremely cramped vertically; vanity sinks set into a wall of cabinets on the opposite wall turned the space into little more than a narrow corridor. “When the homeowners came to us they had tear-sheets in hand, which is the best way to start any design-to-build project, as it provides a jumping off point for our design,” recalls Jeff Brown, president, J.S. Brown & Co. “Our first recommendation was to raise the roof, not only

changing the ceiling from flat to vaulted, but also allowing the outside walls to be full height.”

Sophisticated chic The enlarged, frameless shower, freestanding soaking tub, new window and pedestal sinks all contribute to the open, airy ocean-side ambiance of the finished space. “Brown’s designer, Stefanie Ciak, is not only very talented, but patient, too,” says the Westerville resident. “Although we were pretty specific about the types of materials and finishes we wanted, Stefanie brought our ideas to life by using CAD (computer-assisted design) that gave us a virtual walkthrough and really helped us see how everything would fit together. “Jeff Brown’s entire staff was profescontinued >

sional, yet flexible, as well as mindful of our family’s schedule, keeping us informed at every step of the project,” she recalls. “And, when I presented Stefanie with our new, California-inspired ideas halfway through the project, she didn’t blink an eye, but helped us re-create our dream bathroom and stay on budget,” she adds. For example, the original design did not include the bead-board wainscoting, capped with a six-inch-deep Calacuta honed marble shelf. But when the homeowner sent photos of their vacation cottage retreat to Ciak, she handily re-created the sea-swept look. The unique cabinet between the pedestals, based on an antique dresser in the cottage, was custom built by Trail Cabinet and features a marble top, matching the around-the-room shelf. The homeowner, who wasn’t sure a bathtub was needed, now finds that the Victoria & Albert, double-ended volcanic limestone and resin “soaking vessel,” overhung by a graceful chandelier, is the centerpiece for the room. “Vivien Leigh and Lawrence Olivier were married at San Ysidro Ranch and the Kennedys honeymooned there; now, every day my husband and I can enjoy the same sophisticated, yet relaxed elegance they experienced!”
