Your kitchen should be a very personal space. It should contain the elements that make you happy. The colors, counters, appliances and design should all be created to suit your needs and your attitude about cooking and entertaining. For most of us, this space is the epicenter for family gatherings. It’s called the heart of the home for a reason. A few years ago, Sarah and I changed our kitchen to accommodate an informal breakfast nook rather than a formal dining table. It changed how we live our lives in a very positive way. The casual manner in which family and friends enjoy each others’ company in that space has been a joy. We especially like that we can prepare the vittles and still be in the middle of every conversation. This makeover issue of Housetrends is packed with kitchen transformations—nine of them to be exact. I imagine one or two of them might sing to you in some way and perhaps inspire you to make an update of your own. We also take you to the great outdoors in Westerville where a couple moved just seven houses down the street so that they could live in a lakefront location they’d always admired. Their reinvention of a rather ordinary back yard into a six-level terraced sanctuary is nothing short of spectacular. Whether it’s a tweak here and a tweak there, or a no holds-barred renovation, it makes sense to have your home grow and change with you. We love bringing you ideas that just might inspire you to rethink your status quo. And don’t forget, there’s always more inspiration at housetrends.com

Tailor Made
Powell kitchen remodeled for a perfect fit By Connie Ruhe Photos by Daniel Feldkamp/ Visual Edge Imaging
Running a specialty clothing store leaves limited free time, so when Martha and Heinz Ellrod decided to remodel their kitchen, they made it a priority to fashion a space that is both a haven from work and an entertainment hub for guests. F This Powell couple owns Godfry’s Men’s & Women’s Clothiers in the Polaris Lifestyle Center and their schedule is a hectic one—Heinz works seven days a week, Martha, six. F “Being in retail, it’s so hard to get away,” Martha explains, so the time the two spend together at home is priceless.

“
We couldn’t find anything we liked as much as what we had, so we put the money into our own home.
”
Ready to remodel The Ellrods built their house 18 years ago. “The one thing we didn’t like about the home was the layout,” she says. Before deciding to remodel, they looked to buy, without success. “We couldn’t find anything we liked as much as what we had, so we put the money into our own home.” Over the years, friend and interior designer Mary Jordan had recommended some updates, including creating an outdoor living space and shielding part of the deck for dining, rain or shine. Eventually it was time to look indoors and tackle the kitchen, Martha recalls. “My oven started to go. My refrigerator was ready to go after 17 years.” To make space, Mary suggested removing a large pantry to open the kitchen to the great room and that, says Martha, was just the beginning. “She was instrumental in this whole remodel.”
Reworking the design The Ellrods approached Jeff Brown, owner of J.S. Brown & Co., a full-service residential remodeling company in the Columbus area. Brown happens to be a Godfry’s customer. “That’s how we knew of him,” Martha says, adding, “They have a great reputation.” continued >
OPENING SPREAD: The original all-white contemporary kitchen is gone. “We really wanted a change,” says Martha. LEFT: The Italian sink is hand-carved and features a small faucet for instant hot or cold water. RIGHT: The sink and dishwasher were moved to the new island to make room for the professional range. Over the new mantle is a Bacchus head from Italy. Bacchus is the Roman god of the grape harvest.

The kitchen, dinette and great room areas were once separated by walls but now have an open flow between them. UPPER RIGHT: The double doors from the dinette area lead to an expansive deck. BOTTOM RIGHT: A wall of windows allows for an abundance of natural light.
J.S. Brown kitchen designer Paul Golich met with the couple. “We talked about what they were trying to accomplish,” he says. “The kitchen was really cramped, so we opened it up by taking the wall out completely, and just supporting the corner of the floor above with a column.” Among the challenges: “To keep the open look they wanted, but to make sure they still had enough storage.” Golich explains, “We took out a six-foot pantry closet—and it was full.”
24 housetrends.com 020-026 nFEA TailorMade.indd 24
9/27/12 3:59:34 PM
“Paul was instrumental in finding more space,” Martha says. An underutilized closet in the nearby hallway was converted into a pantry, and part of the laundry room was fitted with floor-toceiling cabinets. The old bi-level island was replaced with a new one complete with sink and dishwasher, and two cabinets where Martha stores electric appliances. “They ended up with more storage than they had in the original kitchen,” Golich says. Another challenge was concealing the 10-inch ductwork the professional range required. Golich devised moulding that did the trick—then crowned the perimeter cabinets with the same look. Rope lighting emphasizes the custom detail. Instead of a range hood, Martha and Heinz wanted a mantle to display items, so Golich designed that too.
Before & After
The remodeled kitchen has a traditional style with a European influence. It features milky walls, creamy cabinets with a slight antique finish, deep coffee granite countertops with crystal formations that seem to shimmer, a distressed floor combining oak, hickory and maple woods in eight-inch planks, and additional lighting that can be brightened or dimmed for the occasion. continued >
housetrends greater columbus 25 020-026 nFEA TailorMade.indd 25
9/27/12 3:59:46 PM
Before & After Golich likes the contrast between the dark floor and lighter cabinets. “I think it makes the cabinets really pop,” he says. “We went with darker wood on the island just to break it up some.” Now the focal point of the room, the island features heavy wooden legs, a dramatic granite stone and a carved marble apron sink. “Martha found the carved marble apron sink, so the island really became something special,” Golich says. “I love that the sink is so big, where I had two double sinks before and I couldn’t use them easily,” Martha adds. She and Heinz enjoy breakfast and dinner while seated at the island’s counterheight chairs, and they can view a wallmounted flat-screen TV in the adjoining casual dining area. A six-foot-wide pantry and wall were removed to create an opening to the great room.
Open floor plan The renovation team also removed a wall that separated the vaulted dining area and great room. As Golich explains, “They had an eight-foot cased opening so you could pass between the rooms, but it felt like a separate room. It made a huge difference opening it up.” With Jordan’s design help, the three rooms harmonize with nearly white walls and hardwood floors, comfortable earth-tone furnishings in varied colors, patterns and textures, and striking art and accessories.

Happy with renovated space For those considering a kitchen remodel, “Just do it!” Martha urges. “Being in my kitchen for 17 years before, I knew what I wanted and what I needed and I knew what was important to me. This went really smoothly.” The Ellrods did everything but sleep in their home’s lower level during the nearly six-month remodeling project. “We simply took our coffeemaker, a toaster and a small refrigerator,” Martha says, she cooked on the gas grill. (No microwave, either.) The couple, who entertains often, unveiled the renovated kitchen at a small New Year’s gathering. “I love to entertain,” says Martha. “It was important for me to be proud of my house.” “We’re going to be here for a long time. We love it.” And now, she adds, “We can’t wait to get home at night!”

hile comparing notes about anniversary-celebration destinations, a Westerville couple and their neighbors found they had more in common than their respective trips to Little Palm Island in Florida. They also shared a love for the restful Before views over Highland Lake—behind a lakeside home that would soon exchange hands from one couple to the other. “We had just come back from our 20th anniversary trip and, in talking about how the resort had changed, found that their home—which we had long admired because of the view of the lake—was available,” recalls the homeowner. “Although this had to be one of the shortest moves ever—just seven houses down—it’s the best move we’ve ever made,” he says. Before settling in to enjoy the sweeping water views, however, the couple first set out to completely transform the now spectacularly terraced back yard of the traditional Georgian home in Highland Lakes. “The Clearwater Group was an easy choice for our landscape makeover, because they had done a great job for us at our other home. Tim Wilson and his crew are not only very detailed and great to work with, but Tim brings a sense of vision to his design ideas that creates a result beyond what we could have asked for,” he adds. continued > OVERLEAF: The setting sun is the focal point from a curved seating area that creates the sense of being seated on a bluff jutting over the water. Custom-made limestone balusters – repeated in the motor court and upper-level patio – provide originality and cohesiveness to the overall design. THIS SPREAD: The range of materials and colors from Classic Ivory travertine, Rosetta Grand flagstone, Noche travertine and brown clay brick, provide variety and interest.

Turkish travertine, polished granite and hand-hewn limestone combine to form a six-level terrace, gracefully descending from a deck off the family kitchen to the lake’s edge. “We wanted to take advantage of the view from every possible angle,” says Wilson, landscape designer and owner, Clearwater Group LLC. “We began by tearing out collapsed railroad ties, cracked concrete and a heaved-up brick patio,” he recalls. Only mature trees and the lake itself remained. Over a 10-month period—and throughout the winter— Wilson and his crew brought in 1200 tons of gravel, 400 tons of topsoil and 100 pallets of building material, before finishing in early April by installing numerous individual plants, shrubs and trees. continued >
ABOVE: The bluff-like, curved seating area was created by a unique stone retaining wall, rising above natural slab limestone steps. RIGHT: The second level from the house features outdoor cooking and dining space, as well as an entertainment-friendly bar, created by Bruce Johnson and situated to maximize guests’ enjoyment of the view. OPPOSITE: Close to the water’s edge, a fire-pit is seemingly cantilevered over the lake; it actually tops a newly-installed stone wall that rises above a small lawn. Lace Leaf Japanese maple in the foreground, paired with multicolored coleus, softens the hardscape.

Before From the composite deck, constructed by contractor Bruce Johnson, wrapping nearly around the entire back of the home, to each subsequent level, the choice of hardscape materials, planting, lighting and finishing touches was the result of close collaboration and meticulous attention to detail. The result is an outdoor sanctuary where the homeowners and their guests enjoy wildlife watching, including swans and geese that inhabit the reeds around the lake, as well as migratory and native birds. “No matter the time of year, we always get a little breeze off the lake,” says the homeowner. “My wife, who really has the eye for design and color, and I are both very pleased with the result. We look forward to hosting many guests and family gatherings over the years to enjoy our amazing water views.” ABOVE: The North Star takes center stage in the motor court, now the highest vantage point over the lake. Clearwater Group extended the driveway past a three-car garage at the side of the home to create a new turnaround where guests can linger a moment before directly accessing the rear of the home. LEFT: From the deck, a stainless steel railing meets safety needs without blocking the view.

When they were in the market for a family home, their goals were straightforward: a front porch and a Village of Granville location which would allow them to bicycle to the office and walk everywhere else. They found what they were looking for in a house

The
Paumiers also wanted the design of the new kitchen to stay true to the old-house character.

impressed with their attention to detail. “As with any old home there are challenges and we were very pleased with the work they did,” says Katy.
Wide open spaces
Kitchen and dining room swap places But first, more space had to be created. They considered building an addition but, because of different roof lines and angles, had trouble visualizing it. Then Katy realized that they could use their existing footprint by flipping the kitchen with the dining room. “Back in the early 1900s, the dining room was a very important room, so it was large. Our kitchen and dining rooms adjoin, so we just reversed their functions,” Katy explains. The Paumiers hired Granville-based Travis Ketron of Ketron Custom Builders for the job. The couple had used the company for a window replacement project and were
The first order of business was to widen the doorway in the shared wall between the kitchen and dining rooms to create a more spacious feel. A 2'6" wide door opening was expanded to 10' and its height was raised to be consistent with other openings in the house. The process requires care, says Ketron. “This house has a very straightforward structural system where the center wall bears a lot of weight. The challenge was to make sure that nothing else moved throughout the house since it was carrying the load of two floors above it.” They ended up gutting both rooms. “We straightened walls, put in new wiring, insulated, and caulked every seam and line which all make for a tighter house,” Ketron says. “Our house has become much more energy-efficient,” Katy notes. An unexpected benefit of having the walls opened up was allowing them to run beer tap lines from the kitchen to a kegerator in the basement. “I didn’t want to cut holes in the granite for this, and now the lines disappear through the wall,” says Katy. She notes with a laugh that she is the resident beer aficionado. They added a KitchenAid beverage center which stores wines and chilled pint glasses. continued >

Before & After Seamless transitions It was important to the Paumiers that the style of the renovated dining room and kitchen stay consistent with the style of the house. The color scheme for the walls and granite was inspired by the hues in tiles of the fireplace surround in their sitting room. The walnut cabinets have a beaded inset for a turn-of-thecentury feel. The cabinets were built by Cooley Custom Cabinetry in Plain City. “Because we’re small business owners ourselves, we try to keep everything local and support companies in the area,” Katy explains. Swapping the function of the two rooms also required changing the windows. The existing dining room had a traditional 5' high window, too tall to work with a kitchen countertop. Conversely, the old kitchen had a short, squat window that didn’t look right in the new dining room. New windows were installed to better suit the revamped spaces. “We paid close attention to finishing details inside and out,” says Ketron. “In order to match the old trim we had knives made to authentically craft matching trim, which is all stained red oak,” he adds. A new floor of 3" distressed red and white oak planks was installed to match the existing floor in the family room. Now the Paumiers have plentiful entertaining space.”We love having friends over now that we have the perfect setting. We can have six or seven cooks in the kitchen at one time and not be crowded,” Katy says, adding, “We’ve been finished for about a year and we wouldn’t change one thing.” The walnut cabinets have a beaded inset and are in keeping with the home’s historical character.

Columbus Garage Floor Coating Premieres Liquid Art floor
Garden amenities that look like wood—but won’t warp, rot or decay
Now there is a material that looks and feels so similar to natural wood it’s almost impossible to tell the difference. Solid Cellular Vinyl is crafted, shaped, routed and mitered using time honored woodworking methods. Best of all, it won’t warp, rot or decay like wood and unlike extruded vinyl it can also be painted and it won’t yellow over time. Walpole Woodworkers, founded in 1933 and a nationally recognized company in the manufacture of cedar products, is now producing many of their classic designs in Solid Cellular Vinyl. Walpole is the leading seller of “no or low maintenance” fences, pergolas, arbors, trellises, lamp posts, bird houses, and other garden amenities. Oakland Nursery has formed a partnership with Walpole to offer their products for the first time in Ohio. Many of which will be on display at all four Oakland Nurseries in Central Ohio. Call 614-545-3519 for more information about Walpole Woodworkers products.
This summer Columbus Garage Floor Coating unveiled the long awaited designer look for basement floors. The 2012 Parade of Homes was the perfect venue to show off the liquid art floor. The liquid art floor is a metallic coating technique that assures the homeowner a one-of-a-kind finish. Floors finished with the application are glass-like and smooth and have been described as having a hammered metal look. According to General Manager Kenny Nobis, “While our coatings in general have always been versatile and used on porches, basements, and patios as well as garages, many of our customers wanted a really high-end customized look for their basements. For those homeowners, liquid art is the answer. People just think it’s awesome.” Contact ColumbusGarageFloorCoating.com or call 614.732.5697.
