Sometimes we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of building or remodeling a home that we forget to stand back and appreciate the artistry behind the work involved. Whether it’s protecting an old existing well from being demolished to build a stunning Powell home, or having to make a New Albany home more family-friendly for kids and grandkids—details and dedication are what make these houses one of a kind. The homeowners in this issue are nothing but thrilled with the outcome of the hard work and time that went into making their homes what they are today. Perhaps the element that makes their stories so special is the overwhelming appreciation they have for the people who made their dream homes come true. From architects and contractors to interior designers, iron and wood workers, each person involved played a pivotal role. We’ve had the opportunity to tour many homes throughout Columbus and we are always amazed to see the unique friendships that form between homeowner and craftsmen. We hope you are inspired by the partnerships it took to make these homes possible. Sincerely,

Steve Hesson and the Housetrends staff

New Albany couple creates a sun-drenched retreat for their parents, kids and grandkids By Karen Bradner | Photos by Daniel Feldkamp/Visual Edge Imaging From the get-go, there were a few things that just didn’t sit right with Mike and Judy Vinson when they built their approximately 8,000-squarefoot New Albany home. They loved the neighborhood and their private lot. For the most part they were happy with the home, but there were just a few items they wished they’d handled differently. F “It really all began with my refrigerator,” Judy says. F When the couple built the home in 1997, they owned a 42-inch refrigerator. Too late into the construction process, they realized that the builder only left room for a 36-inch model. “I had a hard time keeping space open for two gallons of milk,” Judy says. F As the years went by, the two grew more critical of the kitchen. In their minds, the area was simply inadequate for a home of this size. “The kitchen had seating for four,” Judy says. continued >

The not-so-empty nest That may not seem like such a big deal when you consider that Mike and Judy are empty nesters. The two were young parents, they’ve been married 33 years and have a grown son and daughter with five children of their own. But those grandchildren live nearby and visit often, even stopping in unexpectedly during the week. It’s important to “Nana and Grampy” that they feel welcome at all times. Judy and Mike’s parents also live in town, and they, along with their great grandchildren are frequent guests at the Vinson home. It was with those family members in mind, that the Vinsons began to plan for an addition which would give them an expanded

kitchen, dining space for a crowd and plenty of room to gather a group of fans to watch televised sporting events.

Go with the flow Mike’s main concern was that the addition not look like an addition. He wanted a blended look that flowed seamlessly with the existing home. With that goal in mind, the couple hired Sullivan Bruck Architects who drew up plans for a major renovation which would break through the back wall of the home with an 18x30-foot addition. The architects introduced them to several contractors for the bidding process and the Vinsons chose J.S. Brown & Co.

3/27/09 12:02:27 PM

Been there, done that Breaking through the back wall was to be one of the earlier challenges. The exterior brick used on the Georgian-style home had been discontinued, so the construction crew took each brick off carefully, cleaned them up and saved them to reuse on the new facade. “It was a painstaking process,” says Judy. “They knew exactly how many bricks they needed to do what they wanted to do.” The homeowners admit it was a challenging time. “It would have been easier to build a house than to live through a project of this size,” she says. “But J.S. Brown made it livable, they kept it clean and they kept the dust contained. The project manager on our job did not miss a day,” says Judy. “He was here all day, every day.”

Judy and Mike both know the ups and downs of building and renovation. Together they have gutted a home and built two others from the ground up—one in Texas and one in Columbus. “Judy and Mike had very realistic expectations,” says Carolyn Rand, who worked as the project’s interior designer. Before construction even began, Rand got busy working on the front rooms of the home, which would not be touched structurally. With the homeowners’ recent trip to Tuscany as inspiration, Rand “casualed up” the front of the home to tone down the formality and introduced the rich colors—gold, ocher, terracotta, burnt sienna—of the Italian countryside. This warm continued >

time to think about how to proceed,” Judy says. Two large islands are placed so that those working in the kitchen have plenty of room to stay out of each other’s way. Attached to one of the islands is a lower eating area. “I’m short, I don’t like to sit at a bar,” says Judy. “This is where we sit to have breakfast, lunch and dinner.”

The outside is inside Sunlight drenches the conservatory area thanks to three walls of windows and a striking skylight, or lantern, that soars six feet above the space. Reminiscent of an old greenhouse ceiling, the steel and glass structure brings whatever the sky brings—rain, sun, snow or clouds—front and center. Rand designed this space to be multi-functional. Three zones were created by arranging furniture on each of the three handmade oriental Ziegler rugs from Pakistan. In the sitting area, four cushy chairs are arranged in a circle surrounded by large plants to give the space a garden feel. This is a favorite conversation spot for the family’s great grandparents. The dining area is defined by a large harvest table made from reclaimed antique pine which sits on scrolled iron pedestals and comfortably seats ten. Bronze lanterns hang from the cross members of the metal caged skylight adding to the illusion of eating outdoors. continued >

and relaxed theme would carry through to the rear addition once the renovation was complete. Rand specified furnishings in low maintenance fabrics and finishes such as leather, ultrasuede, cork veneered fabric, and distressed woods. “People can eat anywhere and put their feet up on anything,” Rand says. “I don’t want anyone to feel like they can’t go in a room,” says Judy. “My grandkids can go in any room in the house.”

Built to suit This time around, the homeowners took painstaking measures to make sure they got the kitchen they needed to feed a crowd. “We went through and measured every plate and pan we had to make sure things would fit,” Judy says. A major obstacle to their initial design plans came early in the process. During demolition, steel support beams found on two walls on either side of where the range was to be placed made it clear that function came first and that designs would need to be redrawn. Plan B was creatively incorporating the beams by using them to create niches for the refrigerator and the range and creating a range hood as a focal point for the space. The J.S. Brown team drew the hood to scale so that Mike and Judy could picture the look. “Their project manager would help me visualize things. He’d call the architect in and we’d have meetings. He was very good about stopping and letting me have the OPPOSITE: The 7x12-foot skylight, also called a lantern, arrived on the job site in two small boxes and took a company rep three days to construct. The viewing area is organized around the large screen TV and fireplace. Overstuffed upholstery sits near a square coffee table/ottoman with removable built-in trays and a leather upholstered border for feet propping—one of Mike’s favorite features.

Really cool Mike also takes great pleasure in the time he spends with his grandchildren. “Looking at our house, you’d think we’d have kids living here,” says Judy. There are several bikes in the garage, and small putters just perfect for the vertically-challenged golfers to use on the couple’s recently installed putting green. Judy loves spending time in the new kitchen and conservatory area, but when asked to pick her favorite new feature she admits that it is probably still the refrigerator—actually the refrigerators. The couple are now proud owners of two 27-inch refrigerators, one is used just for drinks and the other for food; a 27-inch refrigerator drawer; and five freezer drawers, two of which are ice makers. And the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree—one of the favorite spots among the grandkids is the snack bar area in the family room. It has the refrigerator drawer where the couple keep snacks, lots of drinks and popsicles for the grandkids. “They love that. I mean they love that!” says Judy. “They like getting their own things and like knowing that I have the things they want.” They may love their cold snacks, but their is no doubt that what the Vinson grandkids really love is spending time with their really cool grandparents.

the six secrets of a

Container

Garden Six ideas for starting a container garden on your patio, deck or porch By Sarah J. Dills

Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow? ●

If Mary has a container garden, the answer to this question is: With research,

precision and beauty. Container gardening is a wonderful alternative to tra●

ditional landscaping for homeowners with limited space, time or gardening conditions. Container gardens are completely portable. Everything is in pots so they can be repositioned or relocated for optimal growth.

Container

gardens are also growing in popularity because they act as exterior accessories for dwellings. People have less free time, and container gardens are ●

less maintenance. With bigger patios and decks for outdoor living, container gardens are low-maintenance accents for these spaces. continued >

1

Select the location of your container garden first. The sun and heat conditions will dictate the plants available. There are a variety of plants for full shade, partial sun and full sun conditions. Lisa Gross, of Going To Pot, says homeowners should make note of the sun’s pattern during the day, and remember that this pattern will vary in different seasons. Partial shade means a plant wants morning sun before 11 a.m. or late afternoon sun after 3 p.m. However, containers can be relocated for optimal growth.

2

Be creative when choosing containers. “The container can be anything as long as it has drainage, Gross says. Containers come in a variety of material from fiberglass to terra cotta. Gross recommends considering the needs of the garden before selecting a container. Plastic and fiberglass are portable and lightweight if the container will transition inside for the winter, but homeowners might want something more durable if it will withstand winter weather outdoors.

3

A water management plan is crucial to the livelihood of a container garden. This includes proper watering and drainage. “It amazes me how many pots still don’t have holes in the bottom,” Gross explains. Drainage holes should be in the bottom of all containers to allow excess water to escape the roots and avoid root rot. If a container doesn’t have holes, create them yourself without making them too large. ● It is best to water plants in the morning or evening when the sun is not too hot, and there are self-watering containers and irrigation systems that make watering easier for busy homeowners. Avoid over-watering using Gross’ method of sticking a finger into the soil to make sure the soil is dry.

landscape trends

Buying a bag of garden soil is fine for container gardens, but Gross recommends mixing it with peat moss, vermiculite or sand. Keep soil lighter in the summer, and add a sustained release fertilizer for all of the extra watering. Soil can become denser in the fall to protect plants from cold weather. Never use soil from the ground or garden, due to possible insects or pesticides. Gross adds that gravel can be used as filler in the bottom of a container to help aid water drainage without soil run-off.

5 Photo by Daniel Feldkamp/Visual Edge Imaging

The sky is the limit when it comes to plant selection. This is an area where homeowners can be creative again. Container gardens can include a plant to bring height to the arrangement, another plant that serves as filler, and another to cascade over the sides. Look for plants that perform well with minimal maintenance. Tropical plants do well in the heat and sun. Dichondria and scaevola (fanflower) are two nice trailing plants that bring color to a container while also performing well in hot, summer temperatures.

34 housetrends.com 031-034 tULND ConantainerGarden.indd 34

6

Diversify plants to make the container interesting, but make sure all plants are compatible before putting them in the same container. The sun exposure and watering needs of all plants should be the same. Plants are like babies. They need extra attention in the beginning stages, and they become more independent with time.

Couple has deep appreciation for talented professionals who designed and built their Powell home By Karen Bradner | Photos by J.E. Evans When an abandoned well was discovered among the barbed wire fencing and overgrown brush on a Powell lot that would soon be cleared to build a new home, the construction crew wanted to bulldoze it and fill it in with dirt—but the homeowner had different ideas. F Becky Kimble didn’t see an obstacle when she looked inside the well, she saw artistry in the aging circular walls. “Years ago, somebody stood down there for a long time building that thing stone by stone,” she says. “There was no way I was going to ignore that work.” OPPOSITE: Individually fired and glazed tiles surround the fireplace.

That attitude and appreciation of craftsmanship would set the tone for the transformation of the ramshackle lot into lush green grounds for a striking, nearly 6,400-square-foot European-style home.

Skilled set When giving visitors a tour, Becky, who was heavily involved in the design of the home, is somewhat humble about her work but full of nothing but praise for the talented workers who helped design the space, built the beams, carved out the landscaping and forged the ironwork. She

uses words like “genius” and “amazing” often to describe their skills and talks about them all on a first-name basis. Standing in the great room she points to the large buttresses that soar across the space under the 20-foot ceilings and says, “Three incredible carpenters—PJ, Mark and John—created our detailed woodworking. Mark cut the brackets out of one piece of wood. John finished the hearth room to look like a carriage house.” Outside on the grounds she walks through lush landscaping and gives landscape designer Fred Parrish complete continued >

credit. “I just spent some time telling Fred what I liked and he took it from there. His work is incredible.”

Homecoming Both Becky and her husband Don grew up nearby in Galion, Ohio. The couple spent several years living in other parts of the country, including, most recently, Birmingham Alabama. Four years ago, they returned home to the Columbus area and began looking for a lot where they would build their new home. They found a two-acre plot, which was originally carved into individual hunting parcels, on the

banks of a protected creek which flows to the Olentangy. The area was slowly being developed, and Don and Becky liked what they saw. They especially loved the homes that were the work of residential designer Andy Melaragno and they approached him about working with them. It would be the beginning of a beautiful relationship. “Andy is the least egotistical person I’ve ever met,” Becky says. “He’s very talented. He always listened to me and wanted to hear my ideas. He wanted this to be our home and didn’t try to talk me out of anything I wanted.”

Melaragno’s method worked. The Kimble home won Best of Show for the 2008 American Residential Design Awards from the American Institute of Building Design.

Support team With an interior design education and years of experience behind her, Becky is definitely a woman who knows what she wants. “I am a little bit of a control freak,” she says. Since she surrounded herself with a high-caliber talent whom she trusted, she was able to turn over the reigns a bit, but Becky loves to partake in the creative part

of the building process. Fortunately Becky showed impeccable taste in choosing a spouse as well. “My husband is a great man,” Becky says. “He’s very supportive while I go off in a thousand different directions. We work very well together.” Don was involved in a few key areas of the construction process though. In addition to working with Becky to select Melaragno to head the team, he chose the builder, Robert Giuliani, to oversee the construction process. One item in particular in the home is all Don. Striking, intricate lighting fixtures

make a strong statement in every room of the home. Most all of the pieces were selected by Becky—except one. While perusing lighting catalogs with his wife, Don came upon an iron piece that he liked in particular. He told Becky, “I want this one, you can pick out all of the others, but I get to pick this one.” That fixture now hangs over the center island in the kitchen. The rest of the space reflects Becky’s taste—it’s a highly functional space with two full-size ovens and plenty of storage space. Two iron doors, which lead to the butler pantry then through to the dining room, as well continued >

as the front gates, front door, well tripod, entry and staircase were crafted by Mike LaPlante, an artist from Zanesville.

Making it look easy It’s apparent when touring the home that there were many features that would challenge even the most skilled of craftsmen. But somehow pride and professionalism pulled everyone through the process—that and an upbeat attitude. The carpenters bought an “easy button” from Staples and put it on the kitchen counter. “Well there wasn’t an actual counter at that point,” says Becky. “Every time they finished a difficult project one of them would head toward the kitchen, smack the button and say, ‘Well—that was easy!’”

Delicious details Becky likes to add what she calls “an element of mystery” to every room in the home. To do this, she worked with Fuzzy Johnson, who placed the tile throughout the house. When transitioning into a new room, two things happen: the floor changes and the ceiling changes, For example, the 20-foot high beamed ceiling in the great room transitions to a lower groin vault ceiling in the hallway. The floors are always

in the same material—limestone and black soapstone— but the patterns are different in each room. The mantle in the great room shows the French influence that is found often throughout the home. The wood structure was faux painted to look worn—like it had been sitting out in the sun and rain. Like in most homes, it’s this hearth room and the adjoining kitchen that see most of the action. Even though the couple’s daughter Whitney is away at grad school and son Garrett is in college, the place is usually bustling with activity. Right now four dogs (two just visiting), a bird, some fish, and a few cats are calling it home. Plus, the couple have lots of get togethers with their new neighbors. “This is a great neighborhood,” Becky says. “We all spend a lot of time in each other’s homes.”

Don’t fence me in Almost four years after construction began, there is no longer any sign of the barbed wire that used to run through the property. Instead there are birds to watch, lots of deer, the occasional fox, and the frequent sighting of neighbors stopping by for a chat.

Dreams come true in a room makeover fit for a princess by Danielle Krouse | Photos by John Evans Alli Del Col is a girlie girl. She, like many other girls her age, loves the color pink, Disney princesses and fairies. But unlike many girls her age, Alli is living with Marfan Syndrome— a rare condition that affects connective tissue in the body. Alli lives with the symptoms of the disease every day with a smile on her face and no complaining. continued >

Alli’s family first heard about Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana through a nurse at their hospital who told Alli’s mom, Natalie, that she would be eligible. A volunteer from the organization came to meet with Alli and find out what her wish would be. “They gave her ideas...a trip to Disney World, a computer,” Natalie says. “I think she chose her room because it’s something she could have that would always be here and she wouldn’t have to share it with anyone.” Alli discussed her love of Tinkerbell, polka dots, the color pink and her desire to have a canopy bed. Make-A-Wish, along with Alli’s parents decided to make the room makeover a secret surprise. Sayre Gant, a local interior designer with Bill Franklin Ltd., was contacted for some advice on the project. “My initial meeting was to show up and scale in furniture, but somehow I just ended up taking over the project and it was a great experience,” Gant says. Gant reached out to his resources and was able to get many of the materials for the room donated. Painters worked for free, furniture was assembled and the entire team of volunteers was able to recreate Alli’s room in about 48 hours. Gant was even able to provide a flat screen television for Alli as a special present from the group of people who helped with the room. “The people who came forward were all professionals who put their hearts and souls into it,” says Sally Blue, senior development officer with Make-A-Wish. When the transformation was complete, Alli’s room was a pink paradise, complete with a mural of Tinkerbell and a princess canopy bed. Volunteers added the sweet detail of pink rose petals leading from the front door to Alli’s new room. “When they brought her back she jumped joy...she had no idea,” Natalie says. Alli’s family is having a hard time getting her to come out of her room because she loves it so much. “It’s her own sanctuary,” Natalie notes. Eventually Alli will have to have heart surgery and she was recently fitted with braces on her feet which is frustrating because of how much she loves to dress up. She was also

50 housetrends.com 049-051 tFEA WishingOnStar.indd 50

diagnosed with scoliosis and will have to be fitted with a back brace soon. “The way she deals with everything amazes me, Natalie says. “Her spirit is wonderful. Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana will be holding their BIG WISH Silver Anniversary Gala on May 9. The event will take place at The Ohio State University stadium on the 50-yard line with special guests, Rascal Flatts. For more information on tickets for this event visit www.makeawishohio.org.

reasure sland By Danielle Krouse

Unlike a deserted island, a kitchen island is a gathering place. A place where family and friends get together to talk about their day— good or bad, while at the same time get a sneak peek at what’s for dinner. Positioned in the center of the kitchen and usually being the focal point of the room, islands demand attention. Whether made out of concrete or wood, granite or even lava, kitchen islands are truly unique treasures. There is a dream island out there for everyone, no matter where you want to go: a swanky loft downtown, a traditional setting in the country or a bold and colorful retreat. From contemporary to shabby chic, double islands even double the fun for some homeowners. So go ahead, sail away to your island of choice, we’re sure you’ll come back refreshed and relaxed. continued >
