I have always had a passion for history—it probably had something to do with the fact that my father was a junior high school history teacher. And like the above homeowner, when I was growing up, my parents took me to visit historical places all over the country, which is why I am thrilled to live in a city with such rich history. Named in honor of Christopher Columbus, Ohio’s capital city was founded on February 14, 1812. Today, with three boys of my own, I look forward to teaching them about the city they live in and maybe even dragging them around to a few places, just like my dad did. This issue is our first historical homes issue and we are thrilled to showcase homes that have been preserved and a bit updated, but still hold an impressive amount of strength and charm built on incredible bones. As you read, you will find out how homeowners Matt and Claire added on to the original home of Ben Sells Thompson, the founder of Upper Arlington, without compromising the historical or architectural integrity of the house. Interestingly enough, Matt and Claire closed on the home on February 14, 2005, exactly 193 years after the founding of Columbus. We hope you enjoy the issue and don’t forget to check us out on our new, updated website, www.housetrends.com, and you can always find us on Facebook and Twitter.

entry doors make Great First impressions No longer just a way to usher visitors into your home, entry doors now play a major role in any home’s curb appeal. Studies show that strong curb appeal adds approximately six percent to the perceived value of a home. Along with this newfound importance, over the past several years, the average entry door has grown in size by an additional seven square feet. Search: EntryDoors

The Essence of Time Some homes are built for today, but others are built to withstand the test of time By Sarah J. Dills | Photos by Daniel Feldkamp/Visual Edge Imaging It’s the spring of 1815—pioneer days. The Mitchell family from Pennsylvania load nine of their ten children on a flat boat and head for Chillicothe, Ohio. Upon arrival, Charles W. Mitchell Sr. purchases 1,070 acres of land along the Scioto River. He builds his family a one-room log cabin where they will all live until their home is completed in 1822. F These living conditions might not meet today’s standards, but this historic log cabin— where 11 people lived together for seven years—was what drew the current homeowner to the property in 1987. F Today, the updated home sits on the west bank of the Scioto River, stronger than ever, keeping the 1822 charm well intact. It boasts amazing views of the water from expansive windows in a recently constructed kitchen. The home is a wonderful place to entertain, with sprawling gardens surrounding a beautiful swimming pool and patio. The list of amenities is as long as the property line, but more impressive is the length of this home’s history. continued >

Design DNA “My love of historic homes started a long time ago,” the homeowner explains about purchasing a 165-year-old house. “My parents used to drag me all over the country looking at old houses and antiques. It was always fun though. I enjoyed the craftsmanship and learning about how people lived back then,” he says. The homeowner says he toured several historic homes while searching for his first house. His mother discovered the Mitchell home on the market and encouraged him to take a look. “I was really impressed with what good condition the house was in,” he explains. “It stayed in the Mitchell family a long time, and there were only three homeowners between the Mitchells and myself. No one had tried to renovate the house and take away from the historic integrity.”

20 housetrends.com 018-027 tFEA EssenceOfTime.indd 20

4/5/10 3:07:45 PM

While the house remained historically intact, it needed some serious maintenance. “When I moved in, the plaster was falling off the walls and the fireplaces needed to be rebuilt,” the homeowner says. “I basically lived in the dining room for nine months. That being said, I was so lucky to have the original woodwork and flooring still in great condition.” The homeowner settled into his home and spent the next 20 years compiling a file of design ideas. He knew that one day he would be ready to update his home to function in the 21st century while maintaining the historical integrity of the 1800s.

Too close for comfort Because the homeowner loves to cook, he finally came to the realization that a renovation was necessary. “The old kitchen was where the butler’s pantry is located now, and it was small. I used to have to

crawl around on my hands and knees to get out my pots and pans. Now, I just have to open my drawers,” he explains. “I knew I needed a space that was functional, but it had to blend with the history.” The homeowner met with Dean Berlon, a partner at Urbanorder Architecture, to discuss expanding the square footage of the house in a historic manner. “The challenge was creating a kitchen and master suite that had modern amenities but still fit with the original 1815 house,” Berlon says. “We wanted everything to be seamless, so it felt like an extension, not an addition.” Berlon introduced the homeowner to Travis Ketron, president of Ketron Custom Builders. “The homeowner was very passionate about his home, and we take a very personal approach to all of our projects, so I think it was a match from the beginning,” Ketron says. “We are very involved and hands-on.” Ketron has completed several historic renovation projects in continued >

the German Village, Italian Village and Victorian Village. He is comfortable working with the commissioners in each village to comply with the restrictions placed on historic properties. “I also live in a home that dates back to the 1850s,” Ketron says. “So I know what the homeowners are going through. I completely understand what it’s like to be without a kitchen or a bathroom, so time is of the essence.” The renovation consisted of transforming the former garage into a gourmet kitchen, creating a butler’s pantry in place of the former kitchen, adding a guest bathroom for people using the pool, and adding a master bathroom and closet above the new kitchen and original log cabin portion of the home. “We’re not just remodeling for the current homeowners,” Ketron explains. “We’re remodeling for every previous homeowner too. I always keep that in the back of my mind when working in a historic home.”

Walnut garage “It’s always nice to work with a client that has ideas and a wishlist of what they want in their home,” Ketron explains. “This homeowner knew what he wanted.” First on the homeowner’s list was a garage full of walnut. “I purchased a ton of walnut years ago in Bainbridge, Ohio,” the homeowner says. “It had moved with me from garage to garage. I knew I wanted to incorporate it into this house, because the original log cabin had walnut. Travis was able to incorporate it into the kitchen, and it’s one of my favorite features in the house.” The walnut wall in the kitchen is about 22 feet of floor-to-ceiling walnut, and Ketron explains that it was no small task to construct. “We didn’t know what we were going to do with the walnut when we signed on for the renovation,” Ketron explains. “If you didn’t know what you were looking at, you’d probably think the continued >

walnut was worthless. But we spent a day grading the wood to determine what we could use. We sent it to our mill shop, and it came out beautifully. It is definitely my favorite part of the house.” The walnut wall consists of a fireplace with a door on each side. The door on the right leads to an office and storage area. The door to the left leads to a secret staircase connected to the master bath. The homeowner says he uses the hidden staircase every morning on his way down to breakfast. He loves to sit in his kitchen and enjoy the great view of the river.

Future time In an article written about Charles and Eliza Mitchell, the author is quoted as saying, “The present home of Charles Mitchell Jr. was built by his father in 1822, and has since been continuously occupied. It is a strongly constructed frame building, and from appearances, will stand another half century.” If the current homeowner has any say, the Mitchell home will stand much longer than that. THIS PAGE: The master bath is located over the new kitchen. Fixtures and hardware were chosen in keeping with the historical period of the home. OPPOSITE: The homeowner loves gardening and the pool is surrounded by several perennial beds.

Spring

is the time of renewal and the best time to sweep out the cobwebs in

your basement and plant those annuals in your garden before the scorching weather of summer appears. Focusing on both the outside and inside of your home will not only freshen up the appearance, but will also add value to your largest investment. From the big ticket items such as windows and roofs, to the more manageable lawn care and cleaning, preserving your home’s beauty is a wise decision.

HOUSETRENDS LIVING WELL GUIDE

The outside affects the inside When you think of replacing windows, it seems that common sense would lead you to hire a company in the fall in order to save on those high heating bills. Realistically, anytime is a good time to replace your old, drafty windows. Spring is a good time, though, because of the mild temperatures that won’t freeze or burn you out of your house while the construction is ongoing. Also, you will still see a savings on your electric

bill because new windows will not let that muchneeded air conditioning work too hard. Roofs are also something to consider replacing in the spring. The same theory for windows goes for roofs as well. Much like windows, you only have to replace a roof every 20 years or so, unless an act of nature dictates otherwise. The cost savings is great for both winter and summer, too. When thinking about the roof, you might also want to consider the gutters. Sure you can keep them cleaned of debris, but consider if your

Take a look at every side where the gutters are installed, preferably when it is raining, to check for leaks and needed repairs. Gutter covers are also a good way to go so that you won’t have to worry about getting out the ladder, hose and bucket in order to get all those leaves and branches out that are left over from the fall. Proper insulation goes hand in hand with energy efficient windows and roofs. If your

Preserving your lawn and garden So, you’ve had a rest from your lawn and garden care during the winter months. Those perennials have lain dormant for months, and now it is time to spruce up the landscape. A few things need to be done even before taking on that project. First off, in order to have a well kept lawn, your lawn mower needs attention. Giving your lawn mower a tune up, as well as a blade sharpening, will help your lawn stay manicured without tearing up the grass. Make sure

Everybody clean up “Spring cleaning” is a phrase that truly lives up to its name. you rake or mulch those pesky remaining leaves from the fall, aerate your lawn and make sure your soil has a neutral pH balance—grass loves that! Don’t forget to fertilize the lawn and pull out weeds in the garden. you strategies for your home or workplace that will last a lifetime and help make the chore of spring cleaning more of a fun project. If you are satisfied with the way your house is structured, but just need an extra hand with keeping it neat and tidy, a house cleaning service may be the way to go. There are many, many to choose from, so comparing prices, availability and the services they actually provide—most professional house cleaning services do not

include cleaning windows—is the way to find the right fit. Painting, whether it is inside rooms or outdoor trim, will absolutely wake up tired spaces. Doing it yourself can be satisfying, yet time consuming, so hiring out the job may not be such a bad idea. There are a variety of ways to keep your house maintained for years to come. Some are annual fixes, some only once a decade or more. You can tackle all the projects at once or take years to finish that “honey do” list. Whatever you

choose, the money you put into the upkeep of your house translates into a smart return on investment for the future of your home.

family updates, but stays true to Upper arlington gem

The residence of Ben sells Thompson was compleTed in 1916, and if he were to stand in front of the home today, he would most certainly be impressed. Thompson, along with his brother, King, are well-known figures in Central Ohio because they founded Upper Arlington in 1918. The brothers were incredibly involved in their community and valued all the area had to offer. The home has only had four owners to date, which is to say, everyone who has lived there, loved doing so. The house is strong and statuesque, warm and inviting, a great family space and an even better representation of the neighborhood. F When the most recent owners, a family with two children, three dogs and one cat, moved in, they knew a little more space would probably be needed. They were insistent that the additions match the original house down to every last detail, and today, the result is a beautiful, historical home, with updates any modern family can appreciate.

Today, the home is in pristine condition. Two wings have been added for more family-needed space.

Love at first sight Matt and Claire purchased the house on Valentine’s Day 2005 from friends who meticulously restored the interior. “Part of the reason we moved to this particular house, was not only did we love the lot, the architecture and the neighborhood, but it was also very close to one of our good friends, whose wife was ill with breast cancer, and we wanted to be close to them,” Matt explains. Matt and Claire decided to add a wing on either side of the home, staying consistent with Georgian architecture, which Matt loves. “This house has incredible bones, and I wanted to add upto-date conveniences in a way where no one would be able to see where the additions began and the original home ended,” he says. Columbus architects, Behal, Sampson, Dietz Inc., came on board and the new wings were added. On the east side of the home, the addition includes a new kitchen, a bathroom and a family room on the first floor, and two bedrooms for the kids on the second floor. The home’s original kitchen was nowhere near large enough, and is now used as a functional mudroom. The opposite wing added an office on the first floor and a master

bathroom/closet on the second. The additions were completed in 2007. “We had begun developing conceptual plans before we even bought the home,” says Matt. “I like to think of myself as an amateur architect and decorator on this project,” he adds.

Design details Interior designer, Sally McDonald, of Interior Works, helped Matt and Claire with decisions along the way to turn their house into a home. “Claire called and I was very excited because it’s such an interesting project,” McDonald says. “I work a lot with John Behal so we make a good team—we think alike. We were committed from the very beginning,” she says. Today, when you walk in the front door, you’re greeted with a warm kaleidoscope of color. It’s not overwhelming, but extremely welcoming. It’s old meets new, but in an understated modern way. The formal living room is painted a buttery yellow with contrasting colorful seating, a window seat and a piano. Randall LaGro artwork above the fireplace ties everything in the room together. Matt’s office is off the living room and is an eclectic space filled with comfortable furniture, antiques and books. Two framed certificates hang above the bookcases on the back wall and tell an interesting piece of Matt’s family history. Matt’s grandfather and great grandfather were attorneys who argued before the Supreme Court of the United States, and these certificates were what they earned to have the right to do so. continued >

Family spaces On the other side of the house is a formal dining room, which is again, bathed in color. Green walls bring out the tone of the natural woodwork beautifully, while the colors in the rest of the room work cohesively with featured artwork. Through the dining room is a bright and sunny breakfast room, which is simply charming. The kitchen and family room are both family favorite hangouts. The kitchen is light and bright, featuring white cabinetry, a large center island and a few distinctive elements. The lights over the island are one of Claire’s favorite design elements, according to McDonald. “We knew they were going to have a dark finish, and Claire really likes a bit of the industrial look and roughness,” she says. The lights look great with the unexpected hood and subway tile. continued >

The family room is just that—a place where the family can unwind and hang out. McDonald says the room is also where Claire’s style shows the most. “She really likes chipped and hard surfaces, she doesn’t like things very fancy,” McDonald says. Because the family spends so much time in this room, Claire wanted a large chaise lounge where two people (or dogs) could lay to watch television. She wanted a durable leather sofa, and with three dogs, a good carpet.

It’s all in the details The attention to detail with accessories, art, furniture and extras is what makes the house truly special. It’s the kind of home where you really do feel at home in. The blending of old and new, shabby chic and modern, is what brings everything together. There’s no doubt that the past of this impressive home is rich, and the future is certainly looking bright.

OVERLEAF: The landscape designer routed the new paver walkway around the home’s mature trees. ABOVE: Low-height plants were placed around the patio to preserve the view of the creek and back yard. OPPOSITE: The view of the bridge was enhanced by thinning out the overgrowth and planting low maintenance hostas and impatiens.

A landscape design doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, simpler may be better. This Worthington home’s landscape project improved circulation and created easy outdoor living areas where the natural beauty of the garden takes center stage. It proves that great things can come from simplicity. “A simple design can still create a beautiful garden and is often the most effective,” says Ryan Kolb of Wood Landscape Services, Inc. Kolb created such a landscape for this home with three goals in mind: low maintenance, improved circulation, and ease of living.

Front and center Wood Landscape Services, Inc. joined the project, which encompassed a complete renovation by Owens Construction. The front walkway and driveway were repositioned to enhance the curb appeal and improve the flow around the front door and garage. The pavers selected for the

walkway were also used around the side and in the back for visual continuity. “We worked hard to incorporate the new landscape with existing vegetation,” says Kolb. “Our goal was to preserve the many mature trees and to blend them into the design. In fact, the new driveway was routed so that no trees had to be removed.” Kolb explains that during construction they took great care not to damage the trees so as to prevent their decline and eventual death. Kolb selected plants that provide a variety of form and texture such as Oak Leaf, Blushing Bride and Endless Summer hydrangeas, as well as dogwoods and hostas. Impatiens added a touch of color. The plants were strategically selected for their size and shape. All are hardy varieties which do well in Ohio soil. “The plantings, pavers and turf work together to give an organic, natural feel and have the added benefit of being low maintenance,” Kolb observes.

Back to basics Achieving a simple design sometimes comes with challenges. “The biggest challenge was the slope of the back yard and how it affected the front, side and rear spaces,” says Kolb. The home’s addition resulted in a rear slope creating the need for a 60-foot-wide retaining wall. “We designed the wall to enable us to build a continuous, one-level walkway from the front of the house to the entertaining space in back,” he explains. Natural stone steps were added to provide access from the walkway down to the back yard. The retaining wall and the steps were built with Arlington Blue Vein, an Ohio limestone. An outdoor patio was created off the 4-season room at the back of the home. “We softened the horizontal lines of the porch with hydrangeas and other lowheight plants to maintain the tremendous view of the back yard,” says Kolb. Potted plants were also added. “Plants in concontinued >

tainers are a beautiful way to add color anywhere,” he notes. An existing bridge in the back yard crosses a creek. “There was so much vegetation, including bush honeysuckle, that the creek wasn’t visible,” says Kolb. The view of the creek was enhanced by thinning out the undergrowth and overhead canopy but without sacrificing the homeowner’s privacy. Finally, Itea, a pleasantcolored shrub, hostas and impatiens were added to finish off the space. The paver walkway continues to the back of the home and is lined with a variety of plants and impatiens.

Creme Brulee French Toast Creme Brulee: 2 cups heavy cream ¼ cup sugar Pinch of salt 4 egg yolks 1 teaspoon high-quality pure vanilla extract Lemon zest, optional French Toast: 3 average-size, day-old loaves of plain, round French or Italian bread 3 eggs ½ teaspoon vanilla extract ½ cup half and half cream Butter for griddle Turbinado sugar Pure maple syrup Preheat oven to 300°F. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the cream, sugar, and salt. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until steam rises. In a bowl, beat the egg yolks and vanilla extract until smooth. Pour the hot cream into yolks, stirring constantly, until blended. Divide this mixture among four 6-ounce ramekins. Place ramekins in baking pan, add boiling water to fill the pan halfway up the sides

of the ramekins. Cover loosely with aluminum foil and bake until custard is set, 25 to 30 minutes. Chill for 2 to 3 hours. Cut bread into 1¾-inch thick slices. Using a serrated knife, cut a deep pocket on the side of each slice but do not cut all the way through. Fill each pocket with as much creme brulee as possible; typically about 1½ to 2 tablespoons. In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs, vanilla, and half and half. Place filled bread pieces in the egg mixture and let stand until the bread is saturated, turning bread to coat all sides. Melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet or griddle for each serving. Add bread and cook until toast is golden brown on all sides and filling is hot. Sprinkle sugar lightly on top of hot bread and use a kitchen torch to caramelize sugar. Serve immediately with a side of pure maple syrup. Serving size is 2 to 3 pieces. Yields 10 to 15 servings.

Classic Cheese Frittata 2 tablespoons lemon-flavored extravirgin olive oil ½ teaspoon dried minced garlic 4 large eggs, well beaten ½ cup small curd cottage cheese, welldrained Salt and freshly ground black pepper ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese ½ cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese 8-10 fresh whole baby spinach leaves Heat olive oil in 10-inch ovenproof skillet. Add garlic and cook until brown. Combine eggs and cottage cheese, pour into skillet and season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook for about 2 minutes or until center is set. Sprinkle cheeses evenly over top. Broil for 3 to 5 minutes, or until cheeses are melted and eggs are lightly browned (if using a Wolf oven, touch Broil 1 and place skillet on rack 5 under broiler). Sprinkle with spinach, cut frittata into wedges, and serve immediately. Makes 4 servings.
