a letter from the publisher

Happy Holidays from our family to

yours.

It’s the time of year where we are beginning to feel a chill, a spark and maybe even some magic in the air. The holidays truly have the ability to bring out the best in us as we prepare to spend time with family and friends. In this issue we visit an extraordinary 10,000-square-foot, French Normandy farmhouse-style home full of eclectic holiday decor—the perfect backdrop for winter wedding vows. You will also find a preview of the Jr. League of Columbus’ annual holiday house tour while flipping through the pages. This year’s tour travels through the Grandview-area, where neighbors open their holiday-clad doors to the public to benefit local community projects. Finally, we are excited to be able to bring you a taste of DIFFA’s 2009 Dining By Design event, which stopped by Columbus in October. Inventive and stylish tablescapes prove once again, that Columbus should be very proud of the local design community. It’s hard to believe that this is our last issue of 2009, and you may have noticed that instead of my photo displayed in this issue, there is a photo of the Housetrends team who help put this magazine together issue after issue. We are very lucky to work with such a talented group. As we take time to reflect on the past year, we would like to thank all of our readers who follow and support us. It is our goal to keep featuring beautiful projects that showcase the best in building, design and decor. Happy Holidays from everyone at Housetrends! Sincerely,

Steve Hesson

— Andrew Elonich

Fit for royalty European-eclectic is an apt description of the 10,000-square-foot home that served as both sanctuary and reception hall for the December nuptials of the homeowner’s son and his bride. The French Normandy farmhouse-style home, built in 1973, was designed by George Aycock and Associates with multi-generational entertaining in mind. Just as Balmoral was the backdrop for one of the greatest romances of all time—Prince Albert made a gift of the castle to Queen Victoria in the 19th century—the Scottish-inspired holiday décor was designed to embrace and embellish the special occasion, according to the family’s full-time florist, Andrew Elonich. “We may have gone a little overboard in honor of the occasion,” admits Elonich, who meticulously planned and coordinated implementation of the decorations he designed in collaboration with the homeowner. continued >

“I love the spiral staircase that winds from an arched entryway, upward to the loft. With stone floors and heavy beams, you feel like you have one foot in an ancient castle and the other in a French chateau—it’s quite enchanting,” he adds. Elonich chose a unique Christmas tree to grace this special space with color and light. Antlers and pheasant feathers mingled with cones, branches and berries to create the essence of a family farm brought indoors, while the aroma of live boxwood and fresh bay leaves blended with the sharp scent of spruce and pine to evoke the outdoors. “There are just so many distinctive architectural touches throughout the house that make it a real treat to decorate, even though we only had a little more than two weeks to accomplish the transformation,” he recalls. One particularly quaint element is the small, round stainedglass window just inside the foyer—a special request of the homeowner’s mother, who was inspired by the Swiss mountain cabin that was the setting for Heidi. The home’s warm crimson fabrics, comfortable furniture, rugs and sumptuous French and Italian paintings, designed and arranged by Rick Miller of Miller VanOrder Interior Design, allow for intimate gatherings in the large space.

I do

“Everything brought into the design had to characterize a Scottish Christmas—as seen through American eyes,” he says, noting that the main challenge was finding items that would fit the scale of the 50x70-foot great room where the ceremony was held.

Decoration perfection Oversized stag horns and huge pinecones enriched massive wreaths hung throughout the home. Garland of more than two feet in diameter was swagged across the loft balcony, from which guests would later shower the newlyweds with well-wishes and poetry inscribed on fluttering bits of rice-paper parchment. “One of my favorite areas to decorate is the loft,” says Elonich.

With five bedrooms, the homeowner was able to set aside dressing areas for the bride and her entourage and the groom and groomsmen, respectively. “In the bridal suite, which already echoed the colors of the mist and heather of the Scottish highlands, we placed a tree decorated all in pink and white—white berries and pink silk ribbons—that complemented the pale aqua and taupe décor selected by Miller,” Elonich explains. The men had plenty of room in a smaller bedroom that had been the groom’s boyhood room. The home is situated on a 300-acre Delaware County tree farm, where more than 100,000 tiny white lights adorned the home’s landscape, including 17 Christmas trees and numerous wreaths reflected in a small lake, to create a warm welcome for 150 family members and guests. “As people arrived for the ceremony, each lady was given an antique lace handkerchief—both as a memento and in case they needed to dry a tear,” Elonich recalls. “If they didn’t become sentimental during the ceremony itself, they must have done so upon leaving,” he says. “When I headed home that night, I took a look back at the house from the meandering drive and was awestruck. “The moon had just come out—it was an absolutely magical scene, with guests dancing on the terrace that had been enclosed with a transparent tent. That vision, enhanced with huge antler chandelier dripping with cones and ribbons and all the tiny lights was a real parting gift.”

Bountiful Style Dining By Design returns to Columbus with tempting tablescapes full of inspiration DIFFA’s 12th National Tour of Dining

By Danielle Krouse | Photos by JE Evans

By Design proved once again, that Columbus is a city full of incredible and innovative design talents. The eclectic worlds of interior design, architecture, fashion and art came together to create stunning, one-ofa-kind dining installations. F DIFFA’s (Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS) fundraising efforts, strengthened by partnerships throughout the country has been able to utilize their resources and raise over $38 million for hundreds of AIDS service organizations. F “I think the event was great,” says Gary Bias, CEO/executive producer, EventCo Productions. “Especially with the economy, we’re living in a totally different world and totally different financial arena, but we had great attendance in Columbus, great media, and it was very well received.” F As you flip through the next few pages you’ll find a true variety of design styles. Modern and classic, high-tech and low-tech, glamorous and simple. But all of the tables showcase attention to detail and true talent. Enjoy!

Trees are a beautiful way to transform an unpleasant view into lovely scenery. Evergreens are great screens that add color and texture all year round and tend to be fast growers. They can also help create peace and quiet by

giving you privacy and muffling outside noise.

As

the Junior League of Columbus prepares to host

their annual Holiday Tour of Homes—“It’s a Wonderful House,” we realize it’s the time of year again for silver bells, Christmas trees and mistletoe. The 2009 tour visits seven Grandview-area homes with superb architecture, structure and history. Each home has been transformed for the season by teams of homeowners, local designers, florists and dedicated volunteers. The homes will be open to the public for this holiday event and proceeds will benefit local community projects and missions of the Junior League. Read on to find out a little more

about the homes being featured.

1492 Roxbury Road  Kent and Susan Studebaker Residence This home, located on a beautiful corner lot, was designed by renowned Columbus architect Frank Packard in 1896. Packard built the house to match the style of a home he admired while on a trip to Switzerland. When the Studebakers renovated the home, they took great care in making sure the changes were consistent with the style and period of a late 19th century structure. Included in the renovations is an architecturally consistent garage that replaced the home's original carriage house. In the 1930s, the previous owners had a family tradition of planting a live Christmas tree for each of the family’s children. One of the trees is still standing on the east side of the lot. The Studebakers started their own tradition with a humorous twist when they moved in in 1993. Because the space around the family’s Christmas tree is too tight to accommodate an overflow of presents, they fill their first floor bathroom’s tub with gifts and bring them out on Christmas morning. continued >

1222 Lincoln Road  Elizabeth and Michael Bockbrader Residence Perhaps one of Grandview’s oldest homes, the 105-year-old home of Elizabeth and Michael Bockbrader has recently been through a complete facelift. Six years ago, when the Bockbrader family bought the home, they gutted and renewed every inch of space from the inside out. The first thing to notice about this two-story home is the large limestone pillars that stabilize the front porch. The stone on the outside of the home is original and came from the Marble Cliff Quarry. On the inside, the home has a very open floor plan that includes two staircases. The oak floors complement the red brick fireplaces, which can be found in the kitchen and in the front living room, which were discovered while replacing plaster walls. It was in this fireplace, that had been covered since 1967, that the family ran into a long time secret. Inside the fireplace was a sealed envelope with the word BEWARE. Inside the envelope a letter read: “BEWARE! This fireplace was covered up to prevent further haunting of this house by creatures of various sorts: gremlins, cantankerous ghosts, and one ganfroy of particular ill will. Since he is the only one of his species the world will be better off from this date on! 2-4-67. And woe to anyone who frees this ganfroy!” The family priest then blessed the house and the Bockbraders now enjoy many cozy evenings by the fire. continued >

1051 Urlin Avenue  Jane and Ron Harris Residence As a wedding gift, Harry Freeman built this classic Greek-Revival home in 1895 for his young bride. The home features 14 stained glass windows, Minton tile fireplaces, intricate hand carved woodwork, a turned staircase with landing and a three-story tower. The current owners, Jane and Ron Harris, place a Christmas tree at the top of the tower each year, which can be seen from the street.

1203 Lincoln Road  Melissa and Jason Baker Residence This Georgian style brick home was originally constructed in 1920. A continuous work in process, the current owners renovated the house in 2008 with the addition of a renovated screen porch to the side with a spacious master bath above. During the 1980s, a previous owner added to the kitchen and second floor to permit a more useable and family friendly use. Currently, the home has 5 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. In December, the family with their two young children burn letters with Christmas wishes in the working fireplace so the smoke can carry the message to Santa Claus in the North Pole. continued >

1724 West First Avenue  Bradley Bowman and Trace Kingham Residence Built in 1914 for the superintendent of schools, this three-story brick house has only been home to three families since being erected. The current owners, Brad Bowman and Trace Kingham purchased the property in 2005 and took it down to the studs to renovate it for the needs of their growing family. Trace is the owner of Fresh Flowers & Events, a European chic floral boutique, located steps away from the home’s front door. The property is decadently decorated with fresh floral arrangements which can be purchased from his shop on the day of the tour. Additionally, the home features unique Christmas trees in every room of the house. Brad and Trace report that every year, Santa takes time away from his busy schedule on Christmas Eve to visit the home and read “Twas The Night Before Christmas to their son. On Christmas Day, the family cooks a large meal and invites the previous owner, Dorothy Nell, to come “back home to spend the holiday with their family.

1198 Elmwood Avenue  Harris Residence Built in 1920, this brick Tudor home features the old-world charm and character one would expect, including natural black gum woodwork, hardwood floors, three fireplaces, and arched doorways. Several years ago, the current owners, Sharon Harris and her late husband Franz, renovated the house, providing additional square footage in the back of the property to make it more conducive to entertaining four children, their spouses and 11 grandchildren. The addition includes a kitchen open to the great room with 9-foot ceilings. Each year the family gathers at Thanksgiving to decorate the home with numerous trees and holiday decorations.

1156 Westwood Avenue  Megan Bamberger and Michael Bills Residence The main level of this Craftsman-style home built in 1917 by Chester and Susan Niple is a perfect mix of old and new. The fourth family to own this home, the current owners purchased it in 2001 and completed a major renovation three years later, increasing the total size of the house to about 3,700 square feet. A stunning feature in this home includes an original 72-window, five-foot-wide paneled pocket door to divide the dining room and kitchen. The back side of the house holds the family’s kitchen and family space. Pop art and modern furniture adorn this area and with a huge marble island, bright pendant lights, and a chalkboard covered pantry, the homeowners have many holiday memories of their growing family. One holiday tradition that Megan enjoys is unwrapping her dozens of folk Santas that she has collected for many years.
